PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

I hope that each and every one of you has been enjoying your summer and that the MAC has somehow contributed to that enjoyment in one way or another. The Club is on the move, with numerous opportunities and events to embrace, along with several, scheduled improvements impacting both clubhouses. On July 14, we held a press conference in the downtown clubhouse in conjunction with Mayor Slay and Energy Equity Funding announcing the largest PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) initiative in the country for 2015 – a $2.4 million retrofit of the downtown HVAC systems, complete with heating and A/C upgrades, state-of-the-art energy management controls, on-site steam generation and high efficiency lighting. The energy savings with these upgrades will pay for the entire project and produce positive cash flows within 12-18 months, all while addressing a challenge that the MAC has struggled with for decades. Moving West, I’d like to share some further details about a project that will be much more visible to our membership – the construction of the 1903 bar. By the time you read this column next month, we should be starting construction on what promises to be a destination target for the majority of our members. Conceptual renderings are on display in both clubhouses to start providing you with a visual of where we hope to be in June 2016. So what else has been going on or is about to come? Well, for about four weeks the entire country became engulfed in the USA Women’s Soccer Team World Cup run … and they did not disappoint, culminating with an emphatic victory in the World Cup Final. The St. Louis market produced the highest viewer ratings in the country, with locals Becky Sauerbrunn and Lori Chalupny on the team and several Hermann Trophy winners represented as well, as noted on the final broadcast. On the heels of their success, the MAC has another opportunity to elevate the Hermann Trophy and further establish our community as the

soccer capital of the United States. The Cardinals finished at the All-Star break with the best record in all of baseball and provide promise for another entertaining September and October. There’s no better kick start or night cap place for these games than our own Jack Buck Grille … first round is on me. The swim meets at MAC West have gathered large crowds in support of our young swimmers and our 31st annual High School Soccer All Star games were a rousing success with some extremely competitive play. We salute all of these young athletes in their effort and commitment. The MAC also continued its long standing support and participation in the VP Fair and Parade, a staple of the St. Louis community. I’ve said this to many of you before, but it’s worth repeating – you will meet some of the finest people in your lives right here at the MAC. Nothing is more indicative of that than one of my most recent experiences at the Club. Last month, I had the pleasure and honor to recognize our members that have been in the Club for 50 years. What an accomplished and esteemed group of people that gathered at our downtown clubhouse, with first, second and even third generation members represented. That type of history and patronage assembled at once was a real treat. The downtown clubhouse recently renovated and brought back on line nine additional overnight guest rooms – to bring our total availability to 75 rooms. Our renovated rooms represent some of the finest in the city, with attractive accommodations for both members and guests. These upgrades are largely financed with dollars from our Preservation Foundation, our 501(c)(3) designed for the long-term upkeep and maintenance of this historic building. The MAC Preservation Foundation is vibrant and growing, and represents a critical element to our ability to preserve the beauty and history of our downtown clubhouse. On August 24th, we’ll hold our eighth annual MAC Preservation Foundation Golf Outing at Glen Echo Country Club. This represents an excellent opportunity to support a vital Club resource and I would challenge you to do so. The Missouri Athletic Club is on the move, abound with outstanding opportunities and amazing people … get on board. Hope to see you around Club!

“The project is the largest 2015 PACE program in the nation and the Club will gain a projected $200,000 a year in energy savings. With the Club receiving all new HVAC upgrades, state-of-the-art energy management controls and other high-efficiency measures, this is great news for our current and future members.”

As noted in prior articles, the West Clubhouse will be undergoing construction in September with the addition of a new bar area and outdoor patio for adults-only named “1903” after our founding year. This is in direct response to the survey administered a few years back wherein the membership vocalized a strong desire for an “adults-only” space. This project is projected to be complete by June 2016. This addition will provide a fresh, fun and engaging environment for our members, both old and new. Chef Grant is busy creating the food vibe which will be the best of the best in St. Louis and one that only our members will get to enjoy. Another important project about to go live is a brand new club website. An article in the new 2015-2016 Roster shares an overview about new features, easier usability and more. Briefly, some exciting new features to look out for are upgraded court-scheduling systems, easy and simple event registration, integrated e-newsletters, and a mobile version and smartphone app. A fast, fresh experience with easier navigation and a fluid interface pretty much sums up the new MAC website. Stay tuned and tune in! While on the topic of club renovations and updates, Mayor Slay joined us at a press conference that took place at the Downtown Clubhouse on July 14 for the kick-off of an important project. Our Club announced a $2.4 million energyefficient retrofit in partnership with 6 F Cherry Diamond F AUGUST 2015

Set the PACE St. Louis. This project is the largest 2015 PACE program in the nation and the Club will gain a projected $200,000 a year in energy savings. With the Club receiving all new HVAC upgrades, state-of-the-art energy management controls and other high-efficiency measures, this is great news for our current and future members. Our Downtown Clubhouse was the first building west of the Mississippi to have air conditioning, and it still has most of those original, custom-built air handlers and controllers. When we were made aware that we could pay for upgrading our systems with guaranteed energy savings, it really became a ‘no-brainer’ for us. Set the PACE St. Louis fulfilled a need that’s going to ensure the preservation of our awesome downtown historical city landmark for generations to come while contributing as good environmental stewards of our world. Going hand-in-hand with preserving this historic Clubhouse are our three foundations that play such an integral role in what this Club will be for our next generation of members. It is important to view these foundations as paramount to the Club’s continued success into the future. The Preservations Foundation is dedicated to preserving, rejuvenating and memorializing the history and historical architecture of the building. The mission of the Foundation for the Arts is assembling, collecting, commissioning, displaying and maintaining significant works of art. Lastly, The Sports Foundation focuses on encouraging and recognizing outstanding achievements in the fields of athletics and to recognize

those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to and achievement in the field of sports and athletics. Most recently, the Sports Foundation sponsored the Special Olympics Torch Relay and two Olympians who are competing this week in Los Angeles. Great staff and your support of our foundations is what make great work like this possible. In the coming days, I look forward to sharing an exciting development key to the future of the foundations and the continued growth of our Club. And don’t forget our Foundations’ Golf Classic, chaired by past president, Scott Engelbrecht, is scheduled at Glen Echo Country Club on Aug. 24. If you would like to participate by playing, sponsoring a hole or just joining in for dinner, please call Katie Maurer at 314-539-4402. I’ve just returned from our annual City Athletic Club Managers Meeting held at the Jonathan and California Clubs in Los Angeles. It’s rewarding to share all the great work going on at the MAC and to learn best practices alongside my peers. Both of the clubs above are exceptional and are our reciprocal partners. Try to get there at some point and enjoy these platinum level clubs and take advantage of all the special relationships your MAC membership provides. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Cheers to 1903! The Board of Governors recently approved the addition of a new bar and outdoor patio to the West Clubhouse – “1903”. And fittingly, the clubhouse celebrated its 20th anniversary in June

of this year. A 2012 survey reported that members wanted an adults-only space at the West Clubhouse, so the launch of this project is a result of nearly three years of thought, planning and delibera-

tion. The project is scheduled to launch this September with the intention of being completed by June 2016. The name “1903” originates from the year the MAC was founded.

Special Note:

In order to make this asset to the Club a reality, members will be charged a modest monthly investment amount for 10 months, beginning Sept. 1 of this year and the new member initiation fee will increase then as well. Investment amounts are as follows: F $50 monthly investment: Residents, Jr. Residents, Emeritus Life, Fellowship, Clerical, and West Continuation members F $30 monthly investment: Associates F $25 monthly investment: Non-Residents

8 F Cherry Diamond F AUGUST 2015

Associate Law Student and Surviving Spouses will not be charged. Initiation fees as of Sept. 1, 2015 are: F $1,000: Residents, Jr. Residents, Clerical F $600: Associates There will be no increase for Non-Residents.

Any member can eliminate their assessment by bringing in a new member who pays the increased initiation fee. Any member who is not already a Platinum Partner will also substantially lower their dues. (The investment stops in the month that the new member joins and pays the increased initiation fee; there is no credit for prior months.) Members joining after Sept. 1 who pay the increased initiation fee will not be charged the investment. Members joining prior to Sept. 1 who join at the current initiation fee level will be charged the investment.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

The MAC recently reached its 1,000th Platinum Partnership – Scott Smithson and Justin Mulligan had the honor of this title! The Cherry Diamond interviewed both to get the inside scoop on these new members.

Justin Mulligan CD: You have been a member of the MAC for a short time. What are some of the things you like best about the Club since joining? JM: From the moment I joined the Club, I love how friendly every member has been to me. I never visit one of the locations without being greeted with a smile and a hello from the members as I pass by. I believe the Club embodies some of the best Midwestern values that are so important to us. CD: Do you plan on holding any events at the Club? JM: I have no current plans of holding events at the Club but have been to several weddings hosted at the MAC in the past and the venue was always spectacular. CD: How have you utilized the Club so far? JM: I have mainly utilized the Club by using the athletic facilities and relaxing by the pool on the weekends. I am hoping to join a basketball team shortly and will make it a point to enjoy a few cigars in the Presidents’ Lounge. CD: You are the 1,000th Platinum Partner. In your opinion, what are some good ways to obtain new members? JM: There is no better marketing than the recommendation of existing members. Everyone that I have talked to loves their membership and recommends the Club to coworkers, family and friends at every opportunity. The persona of the Club, established through its esteemed history, is unrivaled by anything in the city and I am happy to be a part of it.

Scott Smithson CD: You have been a member of the MAC for a short time. What are some of the things you like best about the Club since joining? SS: I’m particularly drawn to the many amenities at the Club, but there’s also much to be said about the social aspects. Members tend to be extremely welcoming as a whole, and as a result, it’s a wonderful place to build relationships. CD: Do you plan on holding any events at the Club? SS: I recently sponsored two dinners at the West County location for certain Board members of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. It seemed that everyone had positive things to say about the food, the service, and the Club in general.

taxi STLtaxi is the fastest, easiest way to order a taxi in St. Louis! Download for iPhone or Android

CD: How have you utilized the Club so far? SS: I’m currently playing on a team in the Summer Basketball League, which has been a fun experience and one I hope to continue. It’s a great way to exercise and meet new people, while also serving as the perfect excuse for postgame drinks at the Jack Buck Grille. Speaking of the Jack Buck Grille, my wife (Colleen) and I recently had an excellent dinner there for Lobsterfest. We particularly enjoy culinary events and will be on the lookout for similar ones in the future. On top of the social benefits, I use both gyms regularly, swim in the West County pool, play racquetball, frequent the downtown restaurants, get my hair cut at the barbershop, and I’ve even stayed in the hotel. Next on my list: the reciprocal golf benefits. CD: You are the 1,000th Platinum Partner. In your opinion, what are some good ways to obtain new members? SS: I’m not an expert recruiter, but it seems that people—especially professionals—tend to be attracted to exclusivity. The MAC is a natural draw, especially given its proximity to the downtown business district. A simple reference here and there to my own membership tends to pique the interests of others.

Destination: MAC Whether it’s an event for five or 500, the Missouri Athletic Club is an expert at making a meeting of any size a success. Whatever the occasion, you can count on the Missouri Athletic Club to make it a special one. The Club’s world-class culinary team will deliver a special dining experience just for you. The iconic venue never has a lack of activity, and a lot of that is due to reoccurring events held by MAC members. Two members are highlighted for bringing a lot of reoccurring business to the Club: past governor Jim Sheets and present governor Tracy Beckette. The Cherry Diamond sat down with both and got the inside scoop on why the MAC is the destination venue for events of any kind.

“I wanted to thank you and the event staff for the great service we received for our reception. Everyone was professional and courteous and took great care of our guests. I especially appreciate the flexibility you gave when we ran out of food and you were able to get more prepared right away. All of our guests commented on how they enjoyed the beauty of the MAC and the quality of the service. We at School Health will be planning any future events in St. Louis at the Missouri Athletic Club.” — Greg Evans, MA, ATC, School Health Corporation 10 F Cherry Diamond F AUGUST 2015

Instructor Susan Nymcheck is attentive to the dancers during a dance lesson; The WallStreet Table members gather for a good discussion.

Jim Sheets, a MAC member since 1970, not only chairs the MAC Dance Club but he is also part of the WallStreet Table and the Rotary Club. He heads up The Dance Club (65% are non-MAC members), is a member of the Gateway Business Network (now in conjunction with the MAC’s Business Development Group) and is the current president of the Big M, an organization started in 1961 comprised of past MAC governors. Spearheaded by Sheets, all of these groups meet at the MAC throughout the year and utilize its spaces, food and excellent service. The past governor recently did a survey of all his Dance Club members, listing the venues the club had visited in the past two years. Members were asked to list their first choice, second, third and so on, and the MAC was by far the group favorite. The Missouri Ballroom and the food were the determining factors in the member comments. The Gateway Business Network (formerly known as the St. Louis Business Network) is comprised of around 50-60 members and meets regularly at the Club. Members gather to share information, network and meet new people. It’s an excellent way for non-MAC members to see the Club for themselves and experience the outstanding service, but more people in the community need to know about it. Stemming from a need to have a great venue as well as good breakfast, Sheets managed to move the meetings to the MAC from where they used to be held. “The breakfast offering at the Club is good – really good – compared to where we used to hold our meetings,”

says the past governor. Sheets is constantly working to bring new business and events to the Club. Plans are in the works for The Dance Club to join the MAC Apollos for an evening fundraiser of singing, dancing and member dance performances – an event that has yet to be done at the Club. Although he is kept busy with his countless groups, clubs and events, Sheets never tires of showing off the MAC and encourages other members to do likewise. Governor Tracy Beckette is yet another MAC member who loves all aspects of the Club and who continues to drive more business to the venue. He is a member of not only multiple Clubs Within the Club, but also is involved in many organizations outside the MAC. In addition to bringing many of these groups to the MAC for regular meetings and events, Beckette has referred new business to the Club from companies such as SLU’s History Graduate Student Association (HGSA). Beckette says that there are many factors as to why the Club is one of the best venues around for any event. Pride of membership is one of them. Members of the MAC are proud to be a part of the iconic institution and sharing the experience with others is a good feeling and it often results in an overload of good comments and feedback about the Club. Holding events at the MAC is a good way to show what it’s capable of. Attention to detail and exemplary service in regards to the catering staff is another plus. “The wait staff is always attentive and the food is by far some of

“Thank you so much for going above and beyond. We know what to expect when we book with you and it’s always perfect.” — Danielle Lukens, Northwestern Mutual

the best in the city,” says Beckette. Thirdly, flexibility is a key talent of the Club. Any event usually comes with some question, idea or issue, and the Club always seems to have an answer and Beckette agrees with that statement. “I’ve yet to suggest something that they cannot do,” he says. And lastly, community involvement is determining factor. Beckette notes that community involvement for the MAC is huge. It makes the Club stand out among other competitors in the city and forges respect in its members and the public. For an event large or small, the MAC knows the secret to success. Numanthia Termes 2012

Flavor: Particularly fresh and fruity on the nose with aromas of raspberries, blueberries and plums which perfectly combine with hints of fresh aromatic herbs such as lemon, thyme, and mint. Subtle notes of eucalyptus and sweet spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. The mouth feel is fresh and balanced, with a predominance of fruit flavors. A lively attack is followed by intense aromas of plums and raspberries. The finish is long and lingering with notes of cacao. At a Glance: Situated in the Appellation of Origin Toro, in the Spanish villages of Valdefinjas, Morales de Toro, Toro and Venialbo.

Cloud Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2014

Flavor: The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc is a definitive expression of the region and its season. Appealing concentration and poise suggests a wine with the ability to age. The nose is bright with aromas of kaffir lime and grapefruit. A generous palate reveals ripe citrus, stone fruit and lemongrass flavours balanced by crunchy acidity. Perhaps the hallmark of this vintage is its persistent finish rich with minerality. At a Glance: Grapes for the sauvignon blanc are sourced from estate and grower vineyards located in the Rapaura, Fairhall, Renwick and Brancott sub-regions of the Wairau Valley in New Zealand. Soils range from free draining stony on the valley floor to aged alluvial loams containing some clay.

The Right Education for the Right Child The process of choosing a school for your children to attend can be overwhelming. How do you know what is right for your child and your family? Did you know that St. Louis has an organization of 41 private schools that are the most highly acclaimed in the area? Here are some good factors and questions to take into account when deciding on the right private school for your children. Small Classes Small classes are at the top of the list. If the private school you are looking at doesn’t have small classes, what’s the point? Now, small can be interpreted in different ways. But typically a class size of 12-15 students will allow students plenty of interaction with their teacher. A Sense of Community A sense of community in a private school is something you feel and experience. It’s either there or it’s not. Administrators and faculty usually make community a top priority. Why? Because it is a life lesson which they want to teach. Most private schools try to turn out students who have a sense of awareness of the world around them. Even more importantly they are taught to respect the rights and opinions of others. Extensive Sports Programs Sports programs, and arts programs for that matter, are frequently considered extras in public schools. The minute a district has budgetary problems the extras get cut. Private schools, on the other hand, take the view that sports and arts programs provide balance to the learning and maturation processes taking place especially in high school. Lots of Extracurricular Activities Extracurricular activities in public schools survive at the whim of budgets and teachers. Not so in private schools. Extracurriculars, as they are often called, are part of the balanced approach to learning and maturation which most private schools feel is a critical part of the mission. Another important aspect that »

The Right Education for the Right Child continued from page 22 Where do the graduates attend college? Schools normally publish a list of where their graduates attend college. While these lists usually cover many years, they will give you an idea of what kinds of colleges the school has associations with, and where you can expect your child to go if she attends the school. What is the work like? Try to ask your tour guide what the students of your child’s age are working on. That way, you will get an honest sense of what academics your child will focus on day-to-day. How will the school work with me regarding financial aid? Before you sign a contract with a school, it’s worth asking how your financial aid package, if you have one, will work. Don’t be afraid to ask a school to stretch out its payments or to match the financial aid offer of another school.

MAC member and Olympic legend, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, arrived at the Club around 2:30 p.m. and was featured on 101 ESPN. As 3 p.m. drew nearer, the MAC lobby became a bustle of activity and excitement as governors and members readied themselves – along with Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder

At approximately 3 p.m., everyone gathered at the intersection of Memorial Dr. and Washington Ave. to receive the torch coming over the Eads Bridge from Illinois. Amid boisterous shouting and applause, the torch was brought into the MAC Art Lounge for a brief

presentation by MAC President, Brent Kaniecki. There, two special Olympians, Allen Cameron and Eddie Watts, received a check for $3,500 from the Club’s Sports Foundation, to aid them in their travels to L.A. for the Special Olympics Summer Games. Contemporary, landscape-based explorations coinciding with imagery and the abstract describe the current direction of Janice Mudd’s mixed media paintings. While the horizon line remains an important part of her paintings, satellite imagery and aerial perspective have increasingly become central points of departure for this work; some of it remaining quite abstract and others specific to particular locations such as golf clubs, corporate campuses, vacation spots and regional areas. Copious layers of color and texture are what give Mudd’s paintings their luminous quality. The use of acrylic mediums, found and altered objects, papers, etc., is important to the collage and textural element of these canvases. Some materials are used as an object statement while others are primarily used for textural purposes. A New Jersey native and long time New York resident, Mudd graduated from the school of interior design and architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. She credits the design skills honed during her work in those fields to her ability to craft the 2-D works of art that became her renewed area of focus in 1998. You can find her work at several area galleries as well as in Santa Fe, New Mexico. See more at: www.janiceschoultzmudd.com.
