PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

Culture Club Our Club has indefinable characteristics, special traits that have been breathed into the walls since our founding. It’s an uncommon feel that only comes with private Clubs of our type. It’s tradition. It’s history. It’s camaraderie. It’s the special privilege that only a MEMBER can know. It’s something that as President I feel a great obligation to carry forward. So, the challenge becomes: how do we open and assimilate a new bar into our 113 year-old heritage? And how do we ensure this new space highlights our history while meeting the needs of today’s members? Enter our General Manager Wally Smith and Chef Grant Higgs to accept the challenge. They spent the better part of a year identifying talented folks in the food and beverage industry and then boldly setting out to recruit and hire these people. Almost every employee at 1903 is new to the MAC. These new employees were tasked with the mission of creating, continuing, and ultimately improving the culture inside 1903. At the time of print, the bar will have been open for about 90 days. Based on my personal experience and from the feedback I’ve received from all of you, I’d say they nailed it! Our staff has created a unique, warm, clubby atmosphere where members can enjoy our newest amenity alongside friends and colleagues. I encourage all members to make time to visit 1903. Come meet the Dream Team we’ve assembled to serve you. Come feel for yourself the special, indescribable feeling

that only a member at the Missouri Athletic Club can know. For your easy reading pleasure, here are this month’s Presidential Bullet Points: F August is Foundations’ Month. Our foundations are an integral part of our Club and provide additional avenues to preserve our Downtown Clubhouse, restore and display our art collection, and connect with our community through various sports programs. Please keep your MAC eyes and ears open to new foundation initiatives happening throughout the month. Foundations’ Month culminates with our golf tournament on Monday, Aug. 29 at Glen Echo Country Club. I’m happy to report that the event is SOLD OUT. There are still sponsorship and auction opportunities available. Special thanks to Past President John Bugh for chairing the golf tourney this year! F The MAC Penguin Swim and Dive teams recently completed a terrific season. Dive Coach Caroline Fenton and Parent Rep Nikki Hostnik led the dive team to a second place conference finish. While Swim Coach Lauren Fonseca and Parent Rep Alyson Schoedel took first place overall this year! With approximately 300 kids competing, this is a massive commitment and one that is very much appreciated. Thank you again to our great coaches, reps, and volunteers. What a great season, GO PENGUINS! F Last, but certainly not least, the Club is working on four consecutive months of positive membership growth. Since mid-May, we are +19 members! Coincidentally, that’s exactly when I started as President. You’re welcome… or maybe it’s because the pool and 1903 are in full affect. Either way. In service,

The buzz this month is that August is Foundations’ Month, which means that we’re rallying support for our three foundations that epitomize our values of tradition, community and culture. 2,300 members all giving just a little adds up to a lot and ensures a thriving club for generations from now. The buzz this month is that August is Foundations’ Month, which means that we’re rallying support for our three foundations (Preservation, Sports, and Art) that epitomize our values of tradition, community and culture. We’re asking our members to consider pledging some small monthly amount in support of our foundations to ensure the longevity of this great organization. We are kicking off our new monthly “All-Star” program here and at the Foundations’ Golf Tournament on Aug. 29, which will be held at our sister club, Glen Echo Country Club. This is so easy and so important for the Club’s future. Detailed information is on pages 20-21, and remember, our strength is in our numbers. 2,300 members all giving just a little adds up to a lot and ensures a thriving club for generations from now. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration. 1903 opened to rave reviews at the West Clubhouse, and the place has been a hot spot ever since. Starting with private pre-opening parties for our biggest supporters, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Town & Country Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Jon Dalton, to happy hours and members just congregating after a busy day, the bar, patio and renovated dining room have been the places to be. I anticipate that the patio will become even more popular as the weather begins to cool over the next several weeks. Also, beginning in September, look forward to wine tasting events in 1903 on the second Tuesday of every month from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Also, on those nights, Chef Grant will offer a special 6 F Cherry Diamond F AUGUST 2016

pre fixe menu with optional wine pairings selected by Nichole Miller-Kirk, our new Certified Wine Specialist. These events are sure to be a hit as well as all of the other specials we have up our sleeves! If you can’t make Tuesdays, plan a double date with another couple that might be interested in joining the Club or, better yet, becoming your Platinum Partner. Showcase 1903. Happy hour any day after work is always a good option. The possibilities to enjoy your new bar are endless, but the point is simply that 1903 is the place to be. If you know some folks who you think would be a great MAC fit, invite them to dinner in the 1903 dining room. Just let us know you’re coming, and we’ll make it extra special. It’s that simple. The first official day of fall is Sept. 22, and a couple of days later, our poolside concert featuring the 40-year-old local band, Jake’s Leg. Those of you who know me well know that I’m a music lover, and this is sure to be a very cool event wrapping up another awesome summer at the MAC. Before I close, I need to shout out to our swim team parent reps Alyson Schoedel and Stephanie Reh and our dive team parent rep Nikki Hostnik. These ladies volunteer their time and services so our youth can enjoy one of the best swim and dive programs in the city. They’ve done such a fantastic job, and we’re pleased to report that a few divers broke MAC dive records this season and came in second place in the division while our swim team won the division championship for the first time since 2011! We also had

a record number of swimmers and divers this year (about 25 Puffins and 200 Penguins, and 63 divers), and our coaches stepped up to work with them. Thanks to Lauren Fonseca, Caroline Fenton and Randy Helm for coaching our swimmers and divers. Many parents are already asking about next season. Keep an eye out for more information in early spring! Our youth also had a great time this summer participating in Camp MAC and other specialty camps lead by our pros. Joy Holdmeier did a great job getting our camp counselors and staff on board to offer these creative and fun-filled youth programs, including trips to exciting local destinations such as Meramec Caverns and safety lessons from the local police department. There are still a few weeks of camp left. If you haven’t already, check it out so you know to plan ahead for it next summer. Maria Palozola, our new head golf professional, also offered some great classes for juniors and adults this summer, and she is starting a number of new classes this month for the fall. There is still plenty of time to work with her to improve your game before the Golf Club Championship in September and the annual Foundations’ Golf Classic Tournament later this month. That’s it for now. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and be safe. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Two New Reciprocal Clubs Available to Members! THE AUSTIN CLUB – AUSTIN, TEXAS Since 1980, The Austin Club has been located in the historic Millett Opera House, which was built in 1878. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a recorded Texas historic landmark. Known as “the social center of Austin” from 1878-1900, the building was not only used for opera and theater, but also hosted legislative sessions (after the capitol burned), political conventions, graduation ceremonies, roller skating, and boxing and wrestling matches. Presently, the grand building features a ballroom, formal dining room, cocktail lounge and five private rooms. The Austin Club isn’t without its own ghost story either! No documentation has been found to support this tale, but legend has it that a heartbroken actress/ opera singer threw herself from the opera house rafters more than 100 years ago. Affectionately dubbed “Priscilla,” she rides the elevators, pulls curtains out of the tiebacks, and has been known to knock things out of people’s hands. The few who say they have seen her describe her as wearing a flowing cream colored gown with a gold medallion around her neck. For more information, call 512-477-9496 or visit www.austinclub.com. THE YALE CLUB – NEW YORK CITY The Yale Club offers all kinds of options: from the magnificent views from the rooftop terrace to the newly renovated Tap Room to the comfy and casual Grill. Meet for drinks at the Main Bar or relax by the fire in the Lounge. On the fifth and sixth floors, find state of the art cardio and weight training equipment as well as free weights, squash courts and a plunge pool. Both the mens’ and womens’ locker rooms come with sauna and steam rooms and access to the massage studio. Whether coming to the city for a special event or just stopping over on the way to some faraway place, consider the club a home away from home. With a choice of single rooms, doubles or two-room suites, every room is pleasant, with cable TV and complimentary wireless Internet access. The Yale Club of New York City also offers an elegant setting for any special occasion. Whether it be a lavish wedding or a high-tech training seminar, a large holiday party or small board meeting, the club’s professional event planners work with clients to make sure every detail is covered. The clubhouse is open from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. For more information, call 212-716-2100 or visit www.yaleclubnyc.org. Cherry Diamond F AUGUST 2016 F 9

THE

DOWNTOWN

Clubhouse

Celebrates a Century

THE MAIN LOBBY STILL REFLECTS THE SAME GRANDEUR AS IT DID 100 YEARS AGO.

This month, the Cherry Diamond celebrates the 100th birthday of the MAC’s Downtown Clubhouse in conjunction with Foundations’ Month, a time for members to rally in support of the Club’s three foundations. In particular, the Preservation Foundation ensures that the Downtown Clubhouse remains a part of the MAC’s rich tradition for another 100 years. The following is a segment from the August 2, 1916 issue of The American Architect, a periodical published during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which featured the Missouri Athletic Club’s new (at that time) clubhouse. Storied with photos and facts from the Club’s early years, the architectural article is partially highlighted on the next page and will continue in two more installments of the Cherry Diamond.

Memorable MAC Highlights from the Past 100 Years

MANY ATTRIBUTES OF THE GYMNASIUM REMAIN THE SAME.

Building for Missouri Athletic Association Mr. G. F. A. Brueggeman and Mr. WM. B. Ittner, Associate Architects The new building to house the Missouri Athletic Associates is located at the northwest corner of Washington Avenue and Fourth Street, St. Louis, with a frontage of 112 feet and nine inches on Washington Avenue and 150 feet on Fourth Street. The exterior design of the building clearly indicates the arrangement of the various departments of the club. The first and second stories are in Bedford stone and the walls above are of brick enriched with terra cotta. The second story, with its lofty windows, gives proper scale to the dining room, which they light, and which constitutes one of the finest features of the building. The arched windows of the gymnasium and swimming pool also accent what is one of the most prominent features of the building of this character and harmonize well with the exterior design. The remaining upper stories, with their regular windows arrangement, indicate unmistakably the location of the living quarters of the building. Apparently, the exterior design has been carefully studied from the standpoint of suitable architectural style, as well as expression, and the result must be regarded as satisfactory from every viewpoint. The building is of fireproof construction with protected steel frame and ample stairways and fire escapes are provided. The entrance vestibule is finished in marble and presents an unusual ARCHITECTURE PLANS FOR THE FIRST FLOOR. air of spaciousness.

AUGUST 1946 Picnic Renewal On July 18, 1946, Missouri Athletic Club recognized 284 honor roll members at its annual picnic renewal. 700 members came out to enjoy various games, indulge in drinks and food and renew their memberships to the Club. Other notable moments of the outing include an Army vs. Navy ballgame, concerts from the Falstaff German Band and a spiral ham was raffled off to one lucky honor roll member. In attendance were Bernard Dickman, former mayor of St. Louis, Navy Chaplain Stamm, clerical member of MAC, and others. AUGUST 1956 Batting tips with Alvin Dark, shortstop for the Cardinals In July 1956, Alvin Dark, shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals, visited Missouri Athletic Club to have lunch with Marine Maj. William Blackwell and I. B. Scheibe. Dark also provided batting tips to the members while on his visit. OCTOBER 1976 Ladies Agog over Fashions Frontenac On September 11, 1976, the main dining room was turned into a runway, showcasing the latest fall fashions. The runway was accompanied with a luncheon. The current first lady of Missouri, Mrs. Carolyn Bond was in attendance at the fashion show. MARCH 1986 Sports Review Keeps ‘Em Guessing The 1986 sports award dinner was held in February honoring special guests Willie McGee, Robert Shannon, and Red Schoendienst. The first Jack Buck award was presented to Red Schoendienst recognizing his athletic, charitable and civic contributions in the MAC society. Jack Buck was in attendance to see the award presented. The night was just a precursor for the dinner and awards ceremonies in the future. Also in attendance were former honoree and Cardinals’ player, Ozzie Smith and St. Louis Cardinals Football Coach Gene Stallings, Dan Dierdorf and Jim Bakken. Cherry Diamond F AUGUST 2016 F 11

How the Lost Bordeaux Varietal Found Me By Nichole Miller-Kirk, Certified Wine Specialist I have had the great pleasure to meet and speak with a number of you and am so very pleased with the outpouring of support for the new program we are running at 1903. My staff and I appreciate the honest feedback to help make us the best establishment in St. Louis. I would like to take an opportunity to share the story—well, the bottle actually— that started me on the life-long quest of wine knowledge that brought me here. I was working at Mosaic Modern Fusion downtown in 2011. I had been there since 2008 and had really gained an appreciation and love for the culinary world. I knew the dishes inside and out, and the wine list, albeit not vast, I knew well enough to pair with the food. One day, we started carrying a new wine, Casa Lapostolle Carmenere. I had never heard of such a grape. I had to know more. As I began to dig further and further into any book I could get my hands on and any article I could download, I realized that this was what I wanted to do, to learn about wine and share that passion with anyone who would listen. Today, I am proud to offer the Casa Lapostolle Carmenere Cuvee on the 1903 wine list as homage to the spark that lit the flame. There is a definite French connection with this winery; the owners are the same family that produces the delicious orange-infused cognac, Gran Marnier. So what is Carmenere? Well, it is commonly known as the “Lost Bordeaux Varietal.” Back in the mid 1800’s, a louse known as Phylloxera was responsible for “The Great French Wine Blight,” which nearly eradicated all of the French and many other European vineyards but especially Bordeaux. Chile, to this day remains one of the only areas in the world that has never been affected by Phylloxera. As it so happens, Carmenere is better suited for the climate in Chile. It’s close proximity to the ocean provides both cool, temperate nights and warm, humid nights, perfect for this late-ripening grape to reach an amazingly rich juiciness. For years, Carmenere was incorrectly thought to be

NICOLE SNIFF TESTS THE AROMA OF THE CARMENERE.

Merlot, but in 1993 DNA testing revealed that it was the longlost sixth Bordeaux varietal. In Bordeaux, Carmenere was merely a blending grape, but in Chile, it is a single varietal bottling and absolutely scrumptious. Casa Lapostolle’s Cuvee has a deep violet color with purple hues and an intense, complex nose full of aromas: white pepper and red bramble fruits at the start fading into the raisin painted richness of dried black cherries and subtle sweet spices. This is a wine of juicy, well-integrated tannins with a soft structure and balance. It is great on its own, but pairs beautifully with smoked and grilled meats, is also delicate enough to stand next to roasted poultry and is a great companion to anything with BBQ sauce. Come in and have a bottle or two, and I can tell you more stories about many of the wines we have to offer! I’ll even tell you how they got around to coming up with a solution, not a cure, for “The Great French Wine Blight.” FUN FACT: The French government still has a reward for the cure for Phylloxera. It is currently held at five million dollars.

Savvy Tips for Choosing a Private School By Rebecca Biundo Whether a child is about to start kindergarten or high school, their education is an important decision. Many options and education styles exist in St. Louis. Whether it’s private, public or independent, unique environments abound for every child, and many factors should be considered. SIZE Will your children feel more comfortable in a smaller class or larger class? According to the National Council of Teachers of English, students in smaller classes with 12-15 students retain knowledge better and learn faster than students in large lecture classes. Individualization will is more prominent in smaller classes and children tend to get more one-on-one time with the teacher. Among the many private schools in the area, smaller classes are just one of the many features St. Louis has to offer. VARIETY OF SPORTS PROGRAMS Children’s athletic ability and interests are good reasons to choose one school over another. Research the desired sport at St. Louis schools to find out if it is offered and if it is the best fit for your child. Private local schools take pride in their sports teams and go the extra mile to ensure students get the most out of the experience. Raintree kids can. They can name the plant underfoot and the bird overhead, they can climb a tree or scale a rock, they can ford a stream. This is why Raintree is a Forest School—to transform, to empower, to allow every child to feel the certainty of “I can.” Hidden on 11 acres of forest, Raintree is a Reggio Emilia inspired pre-school and kindergarten.

organization list to find the perfect place for your student. COMMUNITY St. Louis is a community like no other and belonging to the community is a big part of being a student at a private school in the area. Whether celebrating an accomplishment or grieving through tragedy, the St. Louis school community supports its students. A sense of community can deepen children’s private school experience. FINANCIAL AID Private schools do not have to equate to depleting the savings account. Many area schools have financial aid programs for children to get the best education possible. From grants to loans, many schools are more than willing to help out during this stressful yet important decision.

Raintree School 2100 S. Mason Road • St. Louis, MO 63131 314-858-1033 • info@raintreeschool.org Children thrive on discovery. Poking, prodding, lifting up stones to glimpse what’s beneath, pulling back the underbrush to see what’s beyond, this is how children learn. This is how questions are answered, and more importantly, how new ones arise. This is why Raintree School is hidden—hidden on 11 acres of forest, stream, prairie, fallen log and giant boulder. It is hidden to be discovered by tiny feet and hands as they are propelled by ever-growing minds. The only Forest School in Missouri, Raintree is a Reggio Emilia inspired independent pre-school and kindergarten. The school’s emergent, projectbased curriculum emphasizes innovation, citizenship and grit. For further information, visit www.raintreeschool.org or our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/raintreeschool.

PROXIMITY Throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area, schools are scattered throughout the city, county and surrounding suburbs. While it may not be the biggest priority in finding the perfect fit, distance can play a large role in the private school experience. From drop off to sports practices to studying at a friend’s house, consider the commute. Will it be more of a hassle than it is worth? If the answer is yes, seek out a better fit closer to home so everyone will be happier in the long run.

Schools in the St. Louis area welcome visitors throughout the year with open houses. Open houses feature group tours of the school, meet and greets with faculty and staff and upcoming events. Dates of open houses vary so schedule accordingly when making visits. When looking for something a little more individualized, make an appointment with the school and set up a one-on-one tour. Inquire about your child’s specific interests and if the school can give a closer look at particular the subject or extracurricular activity.

WORKLOAD Many private schools have set expectations on what pace they want their students to learn. With different levels and tracks, schools offer customized learning plans to help children learn to the best of their abilities. Research schools’ minimum test grades, and learn about the day-today work that students complete on a weekly basis.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Private schools welcome parental involvement and encourage parents to be an active part in their children’s education. The concept of a threeway partnership between the student, school and parents is an important part of the private school experience. So what kind of involvement is beneficial? It depends on how much time parents can invest and the talents

and experience they have in a particular area of education. Observance is important. RELIGIOUS TEACHING Religious instruction can be ignored or taught in private schools, according to the specific mission and philosophy of that particular school. Finding a school that meets the religious needs of a child is an important factor. HIGH QUALITY TEACHERS Another important factor in choosing a school is the quality of the teachers. A good practice is to look for high quality teachers rather than “highly qualified” teachers. Advanced degrees may shed some light on the teacher’s background, but they don’t correlate to the effectiveness of the teacher. Personality traits like warmth, good communication, excitement about curriculum and the goal of bettering students are some essentials. Quality teachers guide and mentor students and pave the way for these same students to excel later in life.

» On the Road Again with the Forever Young Club Forever Young Club trips have it all. History, culture, fine dining, music, art – you name it! What started as a trip to Independence, Mo. to visit the Truman Presidential Library became so much more. The ever-changing library covers President Harry Truman’s life, including exhibits detailing the timeline of WWII, which he was propelled into when President Franklin Roosevelt died while in office. Then, the group toured the town’s 1800’s Jackson County Courthouse that proudly displays Judge Truman’s 1934 courtroom and a gallery of famous Missouri artist George Caleb Bingham’s paintings. Always up for a treat, the last stop of the trip was for Central Dairy’s legendary ice cream in Williamsburg, Mo., a stone’s throw north of I-70 on old U.S. 40. Now, the group is planning trips to Memphis, Crystal Bridges Art Museum in Bentonville, Ark. and a day-trip for eagle watching in Clarksville, Mo. Mark Hurd was born and raised in St. Charles, Mo. He attended Washington University in St. Louis and received a BFA in Graphic Communications in 1987. His career includes 22 years as a designer and art director at May Company, Famous Barr and Macy’s. He has created unique works of art since 2004 and founded his company, Dancing Moon Graphics in 2008. His work consists of creating and selling fine art prints for corporate interior design, public gallery exhibitions, and private collections. The artist is drawn to bright vivid colors and contrast, whether a brilliant neon red sign against the dark wall of an inner city building or the infinite, saturated shades of green in a radiant tree bathed in late day sun. In his early artistic development, Hurd concentrated on drawing and graphics and made the logical move to digital art and computer graphics that gave him the ability to create abstractly, with a heavy contrast of light and dark and saturated color. Much of his artwork is focused on the magic hours of dusk in urban settings. The artist’s major creative influences include Vincent Van Gogh, Edward Hopper and Bill Kohn, his painting professor from Washington University, whose work is dominated by abstract planes of intense contrast and dazzling hues. To purchase any work on display, contact Morgan Franke at 314-539-4438 or mfranke@mac-stl.org.

THE

MAC Meeting Corner

By Director of New Opportunities, Najah Fennoy, MBA We would like to again personally thank our members who currently hold meetings here at the Missouri Athletic Club. The Club has again been designated a Platinum Club of America, yet with all of the accolades that the Club boasts, we are smart enough to know that our members and guests are what matter most. I know most are asking, “why the Missouri Athletic Club?” and members who host meeting here now think the polar opposite “Why not?” The MAC has been in the same location for more than 100 years and has established itself not only as the premier place for athletics and dining, but also socializing. The momentum of the Club was perpetuated through bonds sold to prominent St. Louis businessmen after a fire in 1914. For more than a century, many influential business men and women alike understand the value of a private club and have hosted successful

meetings, accented by the grandeur of the Club and the reputation that lies within it. Its rich history as a place to meet, plan and execute strategic initiatives continues to this day. Meetings are essential, in that they are where an organization’s expectations, experiences and customs perpetuate. Today’s organizational structures rely on immediate, efficient and result-driven outcomes with a more downsized workforce than ever before. Hence, twice as many meetings are needed with twice as much meeting space. By the way, did you know that our Club has more than 20 meeting rooms? The private, sixth floor Jack Murphy Board Room has a formal meeting space for 18 along with a formal dining space for 18 in the room next door. Three breakout rooms for team meetings equipped with a roomassigned server, complimentary wi-fi and on-site A/V and tech support are also available.

Make your next business meeting and function memorable. So, when you think of meeting with your staff or professional organization, let us take care of your meeting needs, so you can take care of the rest. Please feel free to contact me at 314-458-8744.

Save Your Date – Book a Holiday Party at the Club!

During the summer months, there seems to be plenty of time to plan for the holidays; but the MAC is a popular place to host holiday parties, and spaces and dates go fast! The MAC boasts A/V, garage parking, overnight rooms with holiday pricing and shuttles with pick-up and drop-off services. Look ahead and book now! Although the Missouri Ballroom is

booked on weekends until the end of the year, there are still openings available during the months of November and December for many of the Club’s other meeting and event spaces. For more information on event spaces, go online to mac-stl.org or call 314-539-4470 (DT) or 314-539-4490 (WE). Cherry Diamond F AUGUST 2016 F 29
