from the president These are great times at the Missouri Athletic Club. Membership is up! Activities are up! Our financials are stronger than they have been in years. We have a lot of reasons to be proud. More important than the numbers, I see a lot of members having genuine FUN, and I hear a lot of positive comments about their membership experience. Feedback from the membership and the results of the recent survey reinforce that members join and retain their membership at the MAC because of its value, reputation, aesthetics, culture, dining, fitness facilities, and the sense of community cultivated within the organization. These top-rated characteristics should remind us that we're part of something special - a Club with historical significance and deep-rooted tradition. The MAC gives back to its community and facilitates the creation of life-long memories while providing a gathering place for all ages. Our Club also provides an opportunity to leave a legacy within the organization and the community. In the spirit of ensuring that not only the physical structure but also the culture and values of our Club are carried into the future, the MAC created three foundations: Preservation Foundation, Sports Foundation, and Foundation for the Arts. Each serves a different purpose. Preservation Foundation: Established to preserve, rejuvenate and memorialize the history and architecture of the Downtown Clubhouse that was built in 1916 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. This foundation helps to preserve our downtown location so future generations can experience its history and tradition.

Sports Foundation: In true recognition of our middle name, this foundation recognizes athletic achievement at all levels, both locally and nationally. For example, the Sports Foundation annually awards the Hermann Trophy to the best female and male collegiate soccer player. Another facet of this foundations is its Charitable Society for Children, which has provided more than $250,000 to local charities that focus on helping children such as Mathews-Dickey Boys’ and Girls’ Club. Foundation for the Arts: Over the years, the MAC has been blessed to receive, purchase, and commission beautiful and unique works of art, and now maintains a $3 million art collection. These pieces are showcased at both clubhouses for the enjoyment of our members and their guests. In addition to being an institution since 1903, the MAC has become a cultural location for the St. Louis region. These foundations are so critically important to the Club’s legacy that every year, during the month of August, we give them special attention. In doing so, I also want to give attention to the people who lead these incredible foundations. Each foundation is managed by its own Board of Directors. This year, I’d like to specially thank Past President John Bugh (Preservation), Past Governor Greg Beekman (Sports), and Past President Tom Albus (Arts) for leading each of those Boards in 2017/2018. I also want to recognize Nat Walsh and Jarid King who chair our Charitable Society for Children within our Sports Foundation. Also, thank you to the members whose names are listed in the annual report inserted in the center of the magazine.

They have pledged monthly or given one-time gifts to the foundations and are now part of the Club’s All-Star program. We speak about the many strong characteristics and assets of the MAC, but the real assets are our members who continually step up to help carry on this legacy! Thank you for all that you do. In closing, these three foundations were created to ensure that the MAC continues to be a pillar in the community for years to come. So, how do YOU ensure that happens? By supporting the foundations through your generous gifts. Why should YOU support these Foundations? Because it’s YOUR Club, and YOU want this Club to continue to thrive. Giving to the foundations allows your money to have a direct impact on enhancing the Downtown Clubhouse, maintaining the MAC’s cultural importance, helping organizations that serve children, and recognizing outstanding athletic achievements. Furthermore, it’s TAX DEDUCTIBLE. Simply complete the pledge form on page 17 or give a little extra when signing the green chit this month. It’s a small gesture that will leave a big impact. As I’ve mentioned, the MAC is special for many reasons. Help us keep it special by supporting our foundations and leaving a legacy. Thank you for your consideration and support! Having FUN at the MAC,

from the general manager For the past few months, I have been working with our senior staff, committees, and Board of Governors on our budget process and agenda for the 2018 fiscal year, which begins Sept. 1. We are closing this fiscal year in a really positive place (see the financial report on the next page), which will allow us to kick off the new year with a healthy capital budget. I want to start by thanking all the staff who contributed to this successful year, especially those in athletics, catering, food and beverage, hotel, and membership. Our membership goal for 2017 was +50. As this article goes to print, we’re at +71, which is just awesome. This solid membership growth is not only bringing in more dues fees, but also more participation in our programs; use of our facilities, particularly our restaurants and catering services; gifts to our foundations; and more cash flow than projected. Now, we are looking forward to some fun projects in the new fiscal year. In response to the survey results that highlight a need for ongoing attention to our athletic and fitness facilities and programs, we’ll be addressing those at both clubhouses. At the Downtown Clubhouse, we will remove the golf simulator, and repurpose that space for functional training classes. We will also remove the bulky Nautilus training equipment in the weight room and replace it with much-needed new equipment. As I’ve mentioned before, we’re also in the process of renovating the fitness space on the 11th floor, which was previously used for Judo. Once the renovation is complete, this space will be used for functional fitness training and group exercise classes. Also at the Downtown Clubhouse,

we will continue to renovate our hotel rooms until they all reflect our Platinum Club standards. Plans are also in place to renovate a couple of the main restrooms. For the West Clubhouse, the Planning Committee and its task force are working with representatives from various groups within the Club to put together a plan that will tackle our fitness class needs, specifically for yoga, Pilates, spinning, and an expanded fitness center. I look forward to sharing more details with you as they develop. Undoubtedly, as we continue to renovate and provide new offerings, interest in membership at the Missouri Athletic Club will continue to grow. This year, the Board of Governors voted to cap the membership at 2,500 members. As we grow closer and closer to reaching that cap, the Board has also decided to limit the number of new members for the upcoming fiscal year to net 50 members. As always, membership to the Missouri Athletic Club is by invitation only. This helps ensure that our membership is comprised of the best of the best, meaning members who do all the things I mentioned above: participate in our programs; use our facilities, particularly our restaurants and catering services; and give to our foundations as well as epitomize our mission of being “business, professional and civic leaders and their families.” Think about those people who you would like to associate with, go to dinner with, have your kids grow up together with, and enjoy some friendly athletic competition against. Introduce them to the MAC now while the opportunity is available. This is your Club, and this is your privilege as a member.

By exercising your right of invitation, you help ensure the future of the MAC by inviting the folks you want to associate with. As we celebrate August as our Foundations’ Month, I would be remiss if I failed to mention our three foundations, which are also integral to the future of the MAC. Our survey results indicate a lack of awareness, and therefore a lack of interest, in the foundations. I encourage you this month to take a moment to learn more about our Preservation Foundation, Sports Foundation, and Foundation for the Arts. They each have a robust mission, but to put it simply, these foundations help ensure that our values of tradition, community, and culture are part of your membership experience and exist for the next generation of members. Supporting the foundations is an opportunity to enhance your membership experience, be a leader in the community, and leave a legacy. Talk to Cynthia Goudy, our Director of Foundations, or any of the members listed on the insert in the centerspread. They can tell you why these foundations matter so much to our Club. Even as little as $25 per month helps immensely; remember that strength in numbers analogy? Thank you for a terrific fiscal year and for supporting the Missouri Athletic Club in so many ways.

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

This is your Club, and this is your privilege as a member. By exercising your right of invitation, you help ensure the future of the MAC.”

Spotlight:

B ENJA M IN REIFSCHNEIDER

As the new president of the Associates Council, Benjamin Reifschneider shares how younger members should get involved in their Club. Q How long have you been a MAC member? A I’ve been a member since October of 2015. Q Why did you join the MAC? A Once I moved downtown to live and work, it was clear that the Downtown Clubhouse was unlike any other establishment in the city. After I made an official visit and spoke to current members, I quickly decided that the social and athletic community was something I wanted to be a part of. Q Why should other young professionals join the MAC? A The MAC has great facilities no doubt, but what I would tell anyone interested in joining is that it is so much more than just athletics or dining: it’s a community. Our Club has such rich history and tradition in St. Louis, and it’s clear why it is still thriving after more than 100 years. Whether it be social engagements, professional development and networking, athletic competition, or joining a men’s singing group, our members have many great options for shaping their Club experience.

MEET NEW DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP, ASHLEY HANCOCK In June, Ashley Hancock joined the MAC staff as the new Director of Membership. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Missouri State University, and she earned a Master of Arts degree in advertising and marketing communication from Webster University in St. Louis. She comes to us most recently from the Saint Louis Zoo, where she developed customized sponsorship and donor opportunities for their corporate partners. Looking towards the future, Ashley is excited to attract and retain the best members in St. Louis. She looks forward to watching new member families become part of our Club family! Patti Cundiff, who has worked at the Club for more than 20 years, has moved from her role as Membership Director into a new role as the Membership Senior Advisor. This transition will allow Patti to take care of her ailing father, while continuing to assist the Club with membership recruitment and retention. You will still see Patti frequently around the MAC. Please thank Patti for her continued dedicated service to the Club and welcome Ashley to the MAC team.

MAYOR KREWSON RECEIVES HONORARY MEMBERSHIP

Q How have you gotten involved? A I’ve been a member of the Associates Council for the past year and a half, and recently took over as President. Q Why did you step up to become the Associates Council president? A I was excited to have the opportunity to give back to the Club and my fellow members. Q Why should young members get involved with the Associates CWC? A It is an exciting time to be an Associate at the MAC. We are a quickly growing membership class and are really beginning to develop a culture that is all our own within the Club. The Associates provide an easy way to meet and socialize with other young members, and we’re planning some great events in the coming months including a rooftop cocktail party at the Downtown Clubhouse on Sept. 14.

JOIN THE MAC ASSOCIATES FACEBOOK GROUP The purpose of this Facebook Group is to promote camaraderie among Associate MAC members by providing information about upcoming events hosted by or planned for Associates and a forum for communication. Join from the MAC’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/macstlouis/.

PRESIDENT MIKE SCHOEDEL, GOVERNOR MATT MORRIS AND ANGIE MINGES PRESENT AN HONORARY MEMBERSHIP TO MAYOR LYDA KREWSON. On Tuesday, May 30, the MAC held a reception to honor Mayor Lyda Krewson with an honorary membership. The Art Lounge was a bustle of activity as members and guests gathered to celebrate and meet the mayor. First female MAC member, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, was also in attendance. KIM DEMOTTE

Abs are Made in the Kitchen

A STORY OF SUCCESS I’ve always weighed more than I should. For pretty much my whole adult life, I’ve worked out at YMCAs and clubs, and, for the past 15 years or so, the MAC. I have never broken free from the federal guidelines of obesity (30% body fat), even though I’ve run half marathons at those weights. The last time I was “normal” I was a junior in high school at 167 pounds and boasted a 34" waist. Since then, I’ve weighed as much as 245 pounds. Last Thanksgiving, I was visiting my daughter’s family in Virginia, and my huge (rugby playing) son-in-law looked fantastic; down to 250 lbs. or so f rom 330 lbs. at 6'7" tall. I asked how, and he replied that he’d simply given up carbs: no bread, pasta or starches of any kind and certainly no sugars. A low carb, high fat diet. I’ve been Keisha Burns’ student at the MAC for six years working out regularly, utilizing the spinning bikes and focusing on abs. For this latest attempt at modulating my weight, I hired her to monitor me in the weight room. I also run twice a week for a total of 9-10 miles, and I am considering another half marathon this fall. When it’s too hot or too wet outside, you can usually find me on a treadmill up on 5M. I’m approaching my 71st birthday. “Keep moving,” they say. I have every intention.

By MAC Nutritionist, Katie Lambert

Bottom line is that I’ve dropped 30 pounds in 30 weeks (a nice, steady curve), and weigh within six pounds of that high school junior and am buying 34˝-waist slacks. For me, this is not doable without carb discipline and Keisha Burns. Period.”

TO BOOK A PERSONAL TRAINING SESSION, CALL 314-539-4495 (DT) OR 314-539-4434 (WE).

Have you ever heard the saying “30% gym, 70% diet. Abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym.”? Diet is just as important as exercise. The MAC’s dietitians can create customized nutrition plans based on personal goals. The plan will be safe and optimized for overall nutrition, fitness, and health. These recommendations are based on proven nutrition science and not the latest fad diets. Also, the MAC’s dietitians will help hold you accountable, help you stay motivated, troubleshoot challenges and barriers, and help you get back on track when needed. Schedule an appointment today with Katie Lambert (DT) at 314-539-4495 or David Vandeven (WE) at 314-539-7483 to start working on that 70 percent.

FLYING HIGH

with the Forever Young Club On a warm Friday in June, the Forever Young Club viewed a spectacular air show from the tarmac at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.. Ensconced in box seats normally reserved for high ranking officers, all had a perfect view of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds precision flying team. The team performed loops; low level, high speed passes zooming by 100 feet off the runway; flying upside down at warp speeds; and negotiating intricate formations, all in perfect coordination. What a view! A full range of current and historic military aircraft were situated on the tarmac for visitors to explore. Scott AFB began as a dirigible base in 1917 and grew to become a major command post. Today, it supports every U.S. military carrier across the world from trains to trucks to airplanes to ships and more. Save the date! This year’s Veterans Day Commemoration event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 9 at the Downtown Clubhouse. At this annual event, the MAC will honor the Veteran of the Year: a retired or former member of the U.S. military who demonstrates support of veterans and the U.S. in everyday life, who serves as a role model for other citizens, and who is respected for his or her service to veterans. If you know a deserving veteran, nominate him or her for Veteran of the Year. Nominations are due by Friday, Aug. 25. The Veterans Day Committee will review the nominations and select the individual to receive the award based on the criteria listed on the nomination form.

The nomination form is available online. Login to the MAC website and go to My MAC > Member Documents. The Veterans Committee is seeking members who are interested in the Veterans’ Awards Program. The Missouri Veterans Recognition Program, an Act of the Missouri General Assembly, authorized the Missouri National Guard Adjutant General to procure and present, as a token of the appreciation of the state, a medal to each member of the National Guard of Missouri who served with a Missouri unit and Veterans who served in the armed forces during World War I, World War II, Korean and Vietnam War. HIGHLIGHTING the HERMANN

SHERRY SALANT

Salant grew up in Chesterfield, Mo. Her grandfather was a sculpture artist and her father was an avid art collector. While other kids were spending the weekends playing tetherball and foursquare, she was either on a road trip to New York City galleries or at the Saint Louis Art Museum where her mother was a docent. This is where Salant learned to appreciate tone, light, color, texture, and style. Salant learned to appreciate more avant garde and surreal art in works by Salvador Dali and Alexander Calder and color with August Renoir. Her love for black and white photography and landscapes come from her favorite photographer, Ansel Adams. Over the years, the artist dappled in drawing but found her true calling in photography and alcohol ink. Most of Salant’s education developed in a darkroom at the University of Missouri Journalism School of Photojournalism. This is where she learned the importance of a picture to tell a story or convey an emotion, the same way that her poetry does. The alcohol ink paintings are organic in nature and a brush is just for blending the colors with rubbing alcohol. The paint flows naturally over a nonporous surface as she picks up the hardboard and angles and dips it in different directions. It is only after she sees how the ink flows that she determines what to paint and where. To purchase any work on display, contact Morgan Franke at 314-539-4438 or mfranke@mac-stl.org. 30 F Cherry Diamond F AUG 2017

This summer, the Club installed a couple of displays spotlighting the top award in college soccer: the MAC Hermann Trophy. The Downtown Clubhouse features an inset display case located in the lobby across from the front desk. The West Clubhouse showcases the trophy in an alcove in the lobby outside of the 1903 bar. Each display features the spectacular crystal soccer ball trophy surrounded by the names of the past winners. Since 1986, the Missouri Athletic Club has annually presented the Hermann Trophy to the top male and female collegiate soccer players in the country. The Hermann Trophy has been awarded to some of the biggest names in American soccer including Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Christen Press, Claudio Reyna, Alexi Lalas and Jordan Morris. The jerseys of the past winners are on permanent display in the Sportsman’s Club. The next annual MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be hosted at the Downtown Clubhouse on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018.
