from the president Throughout July, your Board members have been talking about several things including Glen Echo Country Club’s Full Membership Program, the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project, staff changes at the West Clubhouse, and renovations at the Downtown Clubhouse. In case you missed an update while enjoying a summer vacation, an extra dip in the pool, or one more drink on the 1903 patio, I want to touch upon those four topics and some other points so everyone is in the loop. With that in mind, here are some things you should know. This spring, 25 MAC members, as part of Glen Echo’s Full Membership Program, have been enjoying full membership benefits at Glen Echo Country Club for $275 per month in addition to their monthly MAC dues. The cultures of the two clubs meshed well. The MAC has been using this program to gauge members’ interest in utilizing the country club. A few weeks ago, at our request, Glen Echo released another 30 spots to MAC members on our wait list and an additional 20 people have joined the program. If the wait list continues to grow, we are discussing the possibility of another 20 spots. If we learn there are 200 or so interested and committed MAC members, we would consider a meaningful joint relationship or involvement in Glen Echo to add it as a third location for the Missouri Athletic Club. See page 11 for more information about the program and joining the wait list. Phase One construction of the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project is ahead of schedule and on budget. The projected year end completion date will be a few weeks early. GS&S Construction is doing a fantastic job managing the project. They are conscientious about keeping our facility clean and safe while making great progress. The new yoga and barre studio are included in Phase One. In preparation for expanding program offerings and times, staff are interviewing personal trainers and fitness class instructors. The Club is also preparing to disseminate a survey to all female members and spouses to better understand their

4 F Cherry Diamond F AUG 2018

preferred fitness classes and times. The Club is specifically interested in feedback as many of these women are in the workforce and have a multiple of other commitments so we need to learn how to best accommodate their schedule. Our architect, Steve Burns with V Three Studios, is working on the design for Phase Two, which will be shared once it is finalized. To finance Phase Two, we will develop a capital campaign to raise a portion of the cost. Although we will look to members to help support that capital campaign, it will be voluntary and not involve an assessment. In addition to the exciting renovation changes taking place at the West Clubhouse, the West facility has also recently experienced some staff changes. Charles Williams was promoted from Sous Chef at the Downtown Clubhouse to Head Chef at the West Clubhouse. He is known for his creativity, and is actively working on putting together an impressive culinary team. Courtney Hake was promoted from Catering Manager to Assistant Clubhouse Manager where she will support Darrin Harnetiaux, and serve as the go-to person when he is unavailable. The MAC also hired a new Food and Beverage Manager, Kyle Watson, as an evening supervisor and floor manager. Kyle has experience managing restaurants such as J. Buck’s, P.F. Changs, Stoney River, and most recently J. Gilbert’s Restaurant. We hope these changes will have a positive impact on the West Clubhouse food and beverage. Please join me in congratulating these individuals on their new positions! This past season at the Downtown Clubhouse, bridal parties and others experienced the newly renovated women’s restroom on 1M, which was very well-received. Now, the men’s restroom on the second floor off the Missouri Room is under renovation to mirror the ambiance of the first-floor restroom. Similar to the 1903 bar and fitness renovations, the goal with these renovations is to raise the Club’s facility standard. The Downtown loan, which was secured in December of 2001 to consolidate the Jack Buck Grille and the Sportsman’s Club loans

of $2.2 million, was paid off last month. The monthly payments of approximately $20,000 will now be redirected to the pension fund. Additionally, the vehicle loans for the MAC bus and Honda Pilot will be paid off this month. The MAC redevelopment loan for the garage, which has a balance of approximately $387,000, will be paid off in August of 2020.

In late May, Wally Smith and I held the first gathering of past MAC Presidents to discuss various Club topics. There was a lot of great sharing of information and ideas. We have agreed to host these meetings quarterly, which I hope will help my effort to spread accurate and timely information throughout the membership. Over the past couple of months, I have observed and some of our members have complained, about inappropriate attire at the Club and the fact that many members are not observing and complying with the cell phone policy. The staff at both clubhouses have been re-sensitized to tactfully remind members and guests of the policies. Although this puts the staff in a difficult position to enforce the policy, they have been asked to do so, and I request that you support them and encourage others to comply with the policies. The topics in this column just scratched the surface of the notable things happening at the Club, and with the help of members and staff, I hope we can spread the word.

G. Keith Phoenix, President Missouri Athletic Club

from the general manager In July, I attended the annual City Athletic Club Managers’ meeting. This year, the meeting was held in Calgary so we got to see how the Canadian clubs compare to American clubs, and I got to channel my inner cowboy (see photo). Ultimately, no matter the location, whenever I listen to other club managers talk about the state of their clubs, it continually reinforces for me that the MAC is a great Club in a great position. The Club is doing well financially (see CFO Larry Absheer’s third quarter financial report on page 6); membership is growing (see pages 8 and 10); we’re expanding and renovating (see page 24); and the Club is supporting not only itself but also the St. Louis community through its foundations. Another thing I’ve learned by talking with other club managers is that most private clubs have a philanthropic vein. This has been true for the MAC for many years as well, but has really taken off in recent years with the help of Cynthia Goudy, our Director of Foundations. Cynthia is a part-time MAC employee, but she gives full-time effort to growing the MAC’s foundations. Since she joined the Club in 2015, approximately $625,000 has been raised for the foundations. She also instituted August as Foundations’ Month. For our new members who have not yet experienced Foundations’ Month, throughout August members are encouraged to join the MAC’s All-Star Team by pledging a monthly gift to the foundations through

their statement. Signing up for the AllStar program is easy. Members can contact Cynthia, complete and return the pledge form on page 19, or complete the online form from the MAC’s website or mobile app. This month only, members can also give to the foundations when signing their chits at the Club. Gifts to the foundations are used in important ways. A few years ago, the MAC’s Preservation Foundation funded a $2.3 million HVAC project for the Downtown Clubhouse. While this project was not sexy, it was extremely necessary. Some members are unaware of this project simply because it lacks the visibility of other renovation projects such as the recent women’s and men’s restroom renovations at the Downtown Clubhouse. However, it is very much still on our radar. Now, the MAC has a 30-year fixed loan of $194,000 per year, which we’re obligated to pay back through the Preservation Foundation. Members of the All-Star Team help make this, among other things, possible. Foundations’ Month will culminate with the Golf Tournament and dinner auction on August 27 at Glen Echo Country Club. Special thanks goes out to Mark McClanahan of Mosby Building Arts who is our Presenting Sponsor of the tournament for the second consecutive year. We are excited to plaster Mosby Building Arts’ name everywhere this month to show our sincere appreciation for their ongoing support. If you or your business would like to

support the MAC in a similar manner, there will be another opportunity this year. We’re already planning for the Foundations’ Gala. Save the date for February 8. In addition to party-goers, we’re looking for sponsors in various tiers, including a Presenting Sponsor, and members able to donate valuable items, vacations and experiences for the auction. Contact Cynthia or Katie Maurer for more information. Lastly, for those who want to support the foundations in other ways, the Club is always looking for members for the MAC’s boards and committees. Another way we have harnessed the Club’s philanthropic effort is by adhering to our foundational bylaws and reconstituting a new board for each of the Club’s three foundations annually. The leaders of these boards typically serve threeyear terms so if you want to serve the Club and the St. Louis community through the foundations, let us know. We’re always looking for members who can offer at least one of the three Ws (wisdom, wealth, and workers). Thank you to all the members who already support the MAC’s foundations through the All-Star program, planned gifts, sponsorships and donations. This month, we celebrate you! See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

MEMBERS MAKE ST. LOUIS BUSINESS JOURNAL’S LIST OF 30 UNDER 30 The St. Louis Business Journal recently published a list of 30 up-and-coming St. Louis professionals under the age of 30. Congratulations to MAC members Jeff Wehmer and Bradley Crecelius for making the list! JEFF WEHMER, SANDBERG PHOENIX & VON GONTARD, P.C. CD: Describe your profession and title. JW: I am an attorney with Sandberg Phoenix & Von Gontard, P.C. My practice focuses on product liability, premises liability, and fiduciary litigation defense. I regularly defend clients exposed to high-profile multi-milliondollar verdicts. CD: How long have you been a MAC member? JW: I officially joined the MAC on November 4, 2014. CD: What made you want to join the MAC? JW: I’ve always used recreational centers offered by the educational institutions I have attended for lifting weights and basketball. When I graduated law school I was looking for an athletic club that offered these amenities. At that same time, at work, I was regularly working on cases with now President of the MAC, Keith Phoenix. Keith introduced me to the Club and what it had to offer. After exploring the Club and getting to know some of its members, the decision to join was a no-brainer. CD: Have you held any events or business meetings at the Club? JW: I have not personally held any events at the MAC. However, I have supported many events put on by the Club or Club members including whiskey tastings, dinners, award ceremonies, and networking events, as well as contributed to and participated in various events put on by the MAC’s Clubs Within the Club. CD: Have you used the Club for networking? JW: Absolutely. Not necessarily in the sense of direct marketing, but I continuously make an effort to meet new people and discuss ways we can help each other’s businesses, practices, and careers. I’ve benefited directly from making these new relationships. CD: What are some of your favorite aspects of the Club? JW: The Club’s camaraderie and tight-knit community are two of my favorite aspects of the MAC. Being able to work out or play basketball and then head down to the Jack Buck Grille for food and drinks with friends is an experience that is hard to beat. Additionally, the employees and staff make the Club a place where you want to hang out. CD: Why should other young professionals join the MAC? JW: I strongly recommend the MAC to any young professional I meet, and encourage other members of the Club to do the same. The larger-scale benefits such as networking, building relationships, and the facilities are obvious. However, it is the little benefits that make the Club great. Having a place to call your own and feeling welcome every time you walk through the door is something I truly appreciate. Additionally, having a place to take your family and friends or to use for business meetings outside of the usual general-public norm seems to always add an extra bit of excitement to the occasion.

BRADLEY CRECELIUS, KPMG CD: Describe your profession and title. BC: I am a Senior Associate in the Business Tax Services group at KPMG. I serve a variety of clients, providing assistance in areas such as tax compliance and consulting, as well as tax provisions, and financial statement disclosures. CD: How long have you been a MAC member? BC: I have been a member for about two and a half years. CD: What made you want to join the MAC? BC: My father and grandfather were both past members of the MAC and a friend of mine, Jay Link, is a current member. Jay showed me around, and he helped me see all the benefits and opportunities that the MAC offered. CD: Have you held any events or business meetings at the Club? BC: The only business meetings I've held at the MAC have been downtown over lunch. The buffet provides a delicious meal in a very formal setting that is nice for hosting clients as well as having internal meetings over a "working lunch.” I have not personally needed anything larger; however, other members of the MAC within my firm have. Given the right opportunity I would definitely utilize (the Club for events or business meetings). CD: Have you used the Club for networking? BC: I have attended various events and gotten to know new people I wouldn't have otherwise met. So far, this has resulted in new friendships, but there is always the possibility down the road that these friendships could help identify an opportunity or need that turns into a mutually beneficial professional relationship. CD: What are some of your favorite aspects of the Club? BC: The Club has so many great benefits to offer. Both locations are great depending on if I'm in the office, with a client, or traveling from home. The West Clubhouse is the only place I've found where I can play squash. The Clubs Within the Club offer so many opportunities to participate in hobbies and events with others who share a common interest. CD: Why should other young professionals join the MAC? BC: There are so many reasons to join as a young professional. You are surrounded by successful and interesting individuals across a wide variety of fields and backgrounds; there is no shortage of opportunity to network with others. The athletic facilities offer everything you could find at a gym, and the food is divine. Plus, the pregame before Blues and Cardinals games is so much fun, and the shuttle to watch the Blues is a complete game changer!

The Missouri Athletic Club is excited to report that Phase 1A of the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project is slated for completion by November! With excitement buzzing around St. Louis surrounding the Club’s multimillion dollar project, membership interest has continued to remain strong throughout the summer. In fact, the MAC is proud to have welcomed 28 new member families last month! Due to membership success, numbers are drawing even closer to the Club cap of 2,500 with only 87 spots remaining. As the Club continues to grow, talks continue about raising the initiation fee at the beginning of next year. What does this mean for members? Don’t wait! It’s your right and privilege to invite friends, family and colleagues to your Club, and now is the perfect time. Bring them aboard, and help membership “close the gap towards the cap” before an official wait list is enacted. Contact the membership department at membership@mac-stl.org with any questions or to propose a new member.

DUAL MEMBERSHIP:

A Q&A with MAC and GECC Member Tim Powers Tim Powers snagged one of the first 25 full-membership spots that Glen Echo Country Club opened to MAC members earlier this summer. Since then, he’s been an avid supporter of the course and encourages fellow MAC members to sign up for the wait list. CD: Why did you apply for the Glen Echo Full Membership program? TP: Golf has been an important activity for myself and our family. To be able to extend our MAC activities to a private, established facility like Glen Echo is a big win for us! CD: How have you utilized Glen Echo Country Club so far? TP: I am playing more golf personally. My wife and kids are utilizing golf and the pool as well. One aspect I’m enjoying most is golfing as a family as well as with other MAC families. CD: Have members of your family joined you in using GECC? TP: Yes! Golf, swimming, outdoor tennis, dining. CD: Are there other aspects of Glen Echo that you hope to utilize more this year?

TP: Tennis and more family dining as well as more business event hosting. CD: If another member was considering this program, would you encourage them to join the wait list? TP: Absolutely. The more MAC members we have utilizing the program, the more opportunities we have in using GECC together. This is a great extension of the many MAC activities that we currently enjoy being a part of. It is a win-win for both clubs, and we have been hearing that firsthand from their management and members. CD: Would you like to see this program extended indefinitely into the future and/or to more MAC members? TP: : Yes, definitely! CD: How would you like to see this partnership evolve in the coming years? TP: I would like to see continued increase in participation from our MAC members. With increased participation comes sustainable, healthy financials and sustainability for a great partnership for many years.

GE AR UP FOR FA LL GOLF SEA SON AT GECC Due to the overwhelming popularity of Glen Echo Country Club’s Full Membership Program, the country club recently released an additional 30 spots to MAC members, adding to the initial 25 that were quickly filled. Of these 30 spots, 20 have been filled and only 10 remain. If you’d like to jump onboard and enjoy a delightful fall season of golf, contact Michael Gray at 314-539-4471 or mgray@mac-stl.org to join the official wait list.

AUGUST IS FOU NDAT IONS’ MON T H!

Celebrate the third annual Foundations’ Month a variety of ways, and learn more about what they’ve accomplished in the St. Louis community. This past year was a stellar year for the Club’s three foundations. As the MAC embarks on its third annual Foundations’ Month, recent successes can only be attributed to the support of Club members. Not only is the Missouri Athletic Club a premier dining, athletic and social club, but the title of “philanthropic leader” has been added to its list of accomplishments. Thank you for your support and philanthropy. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOOP DEDICATION On June 1, the MAC partnered again with Habitat for Humanity and dedicated a basketball hoop to a family in need. As part of an ongoing effort to reach out to the community, the Sports Foundation, with the help of the MAC basketball leagues and Women’s Initiative Group, created an initiative to dedicate and install basketball hoops at several Habitat for Humanity homes. Governor Kevin Cantwell attended this recent event to show the support of the basketball leagues, as did Director of Foundations, Cynthia Goudy.

2017-2018

SQUASH YEAR IN REVIEW September kicked off with the 2017 World Championship Hardball Doubles. This event took more than a year to plan and raise funds. Between the MAC and Racquet Club, more than $145,000 was raised for the event. Professionals from all over the country traveled to St. Louis to play as well as amateurs for the amateur draws that ran alongside the pros. John Russell and Clive Leach won the Men’s Open Division over Thomas Brinkman and Robin Clarke 15-14 in the fifth game. Suzie Pierrepont and Gina Stoker won the Ladies Open Division 3-1, and Natalie Grainger and Chris Callis won the Mixed Division 3-2 over Viktor Berg and Steph Hewitt. The Thanksgiving Turkey Burner Singles and Doubles had a great turnout. David Suggs beat Randy Nistler in the singles, and David Suggs and Paul Reilly beat Bruce Springer and Marco Bertarelli in the doubles. The Club held two U.S. junior events (silver and a gold) for players from all over the country throughout the season. More than 350 players traveled to St. Louis for these competitions. The year wrapped up with a fun Christmas event with softball doubles and handicapped singles. In the new year, the MAC reinstated the Missouri State Championship Singles, which was a massive success. More than 60 players from around the city competed for each division. Results are as follows: Men’s A (Amos beat Ashmore 3-0); Men’s B (Davenport beat Holekamp 3-0); Men’s C (Mills beat Shaw 3-1); 45+ (Winner – Atif Shafqat); 55+ (Wolff beat Sansone 3-2). The MAC also hosted another state champion in the A Doubles held at the Racquet Club. Mark Gaertner and Craig Parker beat Tom Boldt and Graham Goldwasser. The much-anticipated Club Championships was again massively attended with more than 235 entries in all divisions. Highlights included Brian Lyss winning his inaugural Men's Singles Championship; Henry Bryne winning the Men's C division at 14 years old; Craig Parker and Tom Beattie winning the Men's A Doubles for the third year in a row; and Joe Dolan and Mia Schroeder winning the Mixed Doubles for the second year in a row. For the first time, the Boys U11 division had eight entries, which was very exciting! To close the season, the Club hosted a Parent/Child Doubles tournament in May. Bruce and Will Springer won 3-1 over Nancy and Jack Holekamp. FITNESS tip

Stuck in a workout rut? Try exercising in time increments rather than a set number of reps. Exercising for 30, 45, or 60 seconds at a time will likely result in more reps and thus a new goal of reps to beat next time!

Get Smooth!

In June 2017, the MAC introduced several advanced treatment options to its massage therapy services. Among these new options is the Skin-Smoothing Cellulite Treatment. This treatment combines Swedish massage, cupping therapy, and lymphatic drainage techniques along with Weleda Birch Cellulite Oil to diminish the appearance of cellulite. Two factors contribute to the formation of cellulite. First, the body’s fat cells have become enlarged due to an inability to remove metabolic waste. These bloated cells take up more space and push the skin outward from the body. Secondly, the skin is anchored to the body by bands of connective tissue. As the skin is pushed outward, areas of taut connective tissue hold parts of the skin down. The result is a dimpled appearance. The Skin-Smoothing Cellulite Treatment reverses this process by warming up the cells and connective tissue with Swedish massage techniques. This is followed by cupping therapy and connective band stretching that lifts the tissue creating space for the cells to shed their waste. Finally, using lymphatic drainage, the therapist moves the newly released fluid to the nearest lymph nodes to be filtered out by the blood stream. The result is a smoother appearance and improved skin tone. Look at the results from a recent client. She followed the recommended frequency of two weekly sessions for three weeks, and a daily application of Weleda oil in between sessions. “I tried the skin smoothing cupping with hopes that my skin would look better with it. I am pleased to say that I can see a difference from the first session to my last (six sessions). Other than the occasional bruising, the experience was good, different to say the least, but good. As each session occurred, the cupping got easier to handle since my fascia was being lifted and released, therefore less cellulite looking as you go along. I am looking forward to maintaining my new look and continued results with more treatments. I recommend this to any woman (or man) who would like their skin to look better. It’s worth it! Thank you, Jerrad!”

Is Your Cough Asthma? Asthma affects about 1 in 12 people and this number has been rising. Among young adults, this is one of the most common reasons for school absences. Many people don’t recognize they have asthma until they continue to deal with a constant cough, start having shortness of breath, wheezing or feel chest tightness. A lot of times the cough can be triggered by talking or laughing. Not everyone has all of these symptoms, some only have one or two

(sometimes all that is present is a cough). What is asthma? It means that the airway reacts to a variety of triggers - some examples are allergens, exercise, getting sick with a cold, smoke and cold air. Asthmatics don’t necessarily react to all of these things but could react to any of them. A lot of times getting a cold will trigger a persistent cough that is hard to get rid of and this may be a sign of reactive airway or asthma. Some people only notice symptoms while exercising, and some could possibly only notice symptoms while exercising outdoors during a high pollen season! Asthma presents in a variety of ways.

DR. SONIA CAJIGAL • DR. ROBERT ONDER 711 Old Ballas Road, Suite 100 • Creve Coeur, MO 63141 Phone (314) 569-0510 • www.AllergyHelpSTL.com 30 F Cherry Diamond F AUG 2018

Frequently, people think that symptoms may resolve on their own. A lot of times they might get better which time, but for asthmatics, if they are having a lot of symptoms, that means there is inflammation in the airways and may need inhalers or other medications to fix this. Don’t let a cough get you down this fall. If you have a cough, shortness of breath, wheezing or chest tightness has been bothering you it is time to see an allergy and asthma specialist!

MAC KIDS ART CAMP

MEN’S RESTROOM REVAMP The men’s restroom on the second floor (off the Missouri Room) is currently closed due to renovations. In an effort to raise the Club’s facility standards, the design of the space will mirror the sleek look of the men’s restroom on the first floor. The room is slated to reopen during the second week of August. During renovations, please utilize the bathrooms located in the lobby or on the third floor.

In July, members’ children participated in an inaugural art camp sponsored by the MAC’s Foundation for the Arts. Artist Julie Bugnitz instructed the camp, which included sketching, painting and building, just to name a few. Throughout August, the Club will display the children’s artwork for sale. The money from each $20 purchase will support the MAC’s foundations.

What is Regenerative Medicine? SPONSORED CONTENT

Regenerative medicine is an exciting field that focuses on therapies that use your body’s own cells to repair, restore, and regenerate damaged tissues. This is a great option as some spine and orthopaedic interventions have a limited lifespan. Such therapies include the use of PRP (plateletrich plasma) and stem cells. With the use of ultrasound or fluoroscopy (x-ray) guided,

minimally invasive techniques, we can target various joints, bursae, ligaments, and muscles. PRP is derived from the patient’s whole blood and spun in a centrifuge that separates it into three layers: platelet-poor plasma, platelet-rich plasma, and red blood cells. The platelet-rich plasma layer is then extracted and injected into the site of tissue damage. Stem cells are biological cells that can differentiate into other types of cells. Adult stem cells can be found in the bone marrow and in adipose (fat) tissue. Again, these can be obtained from the patient’s own supply to be used therapeutically.

In reality, both PRP and stem cells do not replace the tissues per se, but when injected, they release a plethora of growth factors that accelerate the healing process in the injured area. The amazing thing is that this therapy is autologous (obtained from yourself) to help heal yourself. This may be a great option prior to invasive surgeries. PRP and stem cells are not a panacea for all issues. You must be evaluated by your physician to discuss risk/benefits and to see if you are an appropriate candidate. Please see us in Des Peres for an evaluation to see if you qualify for PRP or stem cell therapy! Three Convenient Locations Des Peres St. Peters Washington
