PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

» Board of Governors

Speaking of things to be thankful for, Tressa and I welcomed our third child, Parker Reese into the world on Oct. 21. My wife is a child birthing Rock Star. She is itching to get back to Fitball class so watch out ladies! As for the boys, we are trying to teach them the difference between a headlock and a hug! It’s wild times around our house, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Officers F Troy Robertson – President F Tracy Beckette – Vice President

The 1%ers In the fall of 2011, the Occupy Wall Street movement (yea, remember those guys?) popularized the phrase “the 1%ers” in reference to the top 1% of the wealthiest people in society whom they felt had a disproportionate share of capital, political influence, and means of production. The protestors believed they represented the “other 99%” of average Americans. Now, I’m not looking to give commentary on a five-year-old protest movement, but it struck me recently just how fortunate we all are to be members of the MAC. Not simply because the MAC is a great Club, but rather that we all have the financial means to enjoy the privilege of Club life. From the outside looking in, one might assume the MAC is filled with these selfish 1% types. After all, we are a private club with a rich tradition. Surely we are chalk full of prominent wealth. We even have two locations for double the prosperity. According to the tax assessor’s office, our two clubhouses have more than 392,000 total square feet and sit on nearly 11 acres of prime real estate in Town and Country and downtown St. Louis with an assessed value for both properties in the $10 million range. Now, that has to qualify us for 1% status right? As I observe our members and employees, I don’t see an elitist, unfairly influential group of people trying to game the system. I look around and see a body of members who are deeply committed to their community and who take great pride in reaching out to those in need. In the last year alone, the MAC has given financial support to CityArch River, Cardinal Glennon, Guns N’ Hoses, Mathews-Dickey Boys & Girls Club, and SPENSA (Special Needs Soccer Association) just to name a few. In addition to those donations, the Charitable Society for Children has earmarked funds for Lift for Life Academy, LoveU2Pieces, and the Maggie Welby Foundation, which all assist disadvantaged families. In short, MAC members and staff have a heart for giving. We have a heart for caring. We have a heart for building bridges outside our walls. Now, that’s a movement I want to support!

F Rebekah Bahn-Kingston – Second Vice President F Tripp Zumwalt – Secretary A few holiday Presidential bullet points to look for: F The Club will conduct a member survey beginning on/around the first week of January. We want to identify and prioritize capital improvement projects for the years to come. We need your input to properly plan our future. Please take the time to complete the survey. F The Jack Buck Sports Awards are on Dec. 5 and will honor Vladimir Tarasenko and Lou Brock among others. Don’t miss the best sports banquet in town! Sponsorships are still available. F Breakfast with Santa will be held at the Downtown Clubhouse on Dec. 10 and 17. We had more than 600 reservations last year. Sign up early and enjoy. F Both clubhouses will host a New Year’s Eve Dinner on Dec. 31. F The MAC will host the Hermann Trophy Banquet at the Downtown Clubhouse on Jan. 6 to honor the best male and female college soccer players in the country. Special thanks to Greg and Annie Beekman and the Sports Foundation committee for all their hard work with this event! The holiday season is a FUN season around the Club. I encourage you to bring your family to either clubhouse and experience our great holiday traditions. So from my family to yours and on behalf of the Board of Governors, I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a blessed holiday season!

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

2. Excellence in Amenities and Facilities It is the total array of facilities that provides excellence and fulfillment of the members needs in every function and activity that makes it great. Remarkable Clubs invest on a regular and planned basis in the maintenance, supervision and replacement of the grounds, equipment and furnishings, while building reserves.

It gives me great pleasure to share with you that on Nov. 10, Club Leaders Forum announced the 2016-2018 Platinum Club of America class, and once again the Missouri Athletic Club ranks among the top 20 athletic clubs and in the top 5% of private clubs nationally. For 16 consecutive years, the MAC has been named a Platinum Club of America, and I am proud that we carry on this great status. We frequently mention that the MAC is a Platinum Club or that we have achieved and exemplify Platinum Status, but what does that mean? Well, biannually, Club Leaders Forum assembles an Advisory Board comprised of private club general managers, presidents and owners that have achieved Platinum Status throughout their careers and manage some of the most prestigious clubs in the nation. They are asked to consider specific criteria when selecting the next class of Platinum Clubs. As stated in their announcement booklet, these criteria form the Benchmark of Excellence in the private club industry: 1. Universal Recognition Clubs of Excellence are widely known as such by the strata of American society that frequent private clubs and are well traveled. Whether these clubs are recognized from their inception or through the accumulated passage of time, their traditional history and ability to attract and retain the finest members sets them apart as
domiciles of excellence.

3. Caliber of Staff and Professional Service Levels
Ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentleman is a maxim of the finest Clubs. Clubs that provide an excellent work environment, compensation and benefits, attract outstanding employees in the community. The quality of management is reflected by a staff that is well trained, well-mannered and highly motivated to provide its members with an extraordinary experience. 4. Quality of Membership
Great members are the heart and soul of successful clubs. Members that represent the best qualities are those that reflect the community values in which they live. They celebrate their heritage and religiously observe their time-honored traditions. In addition, great members work hard to attract prospective new members who are equally great. 5. Governance and Prudent Fiscal Management
Great clubs are led by presidents, owners and directors who understand that their key role is strategy and setting policy. High caliber boards work hard at ensuring continuity of effort and direction, term after term. They possess the wisdom to plan well and invest well. Prudent boards understand the need for regular dues increases and occasional assessments, together with overall fiscal responsibility. 6. Adapting to Changing Times Great clubs work at anticipating their members and prospective members’

needs and interests. These clubs adopt a mission statement that resonates with members about who they are and where they want to be and then develop a strategic plan to get there. Great clubs are able to maintain traditions that reflect who they are and remain flexible to adapt to an everchanging member market. 7. Overall Experience
Great clubs provide an “unparalleled experience” every day, one member at a time. These clubs work hard to make decisions in the best interest of their members and those serving them. They encourage their staff to take the initiative, and they support their efforts to deliver exceptional service. Outstanding clubs continue to treasure their shared experience, celebrate their achievements and appreciate one another – just like family. As I have mentioned before, separate but working together, members and staff are what make the Missouri Athletic Club great. Like me, I hope you feel proud to be part of such an incredible organization. The above criteria touch on much of what we’ve done and are continuing to pursue. In 2012, a member survey was conducted to get a pulse on the overall membership experience, establish benchmarks, and develop plans for the future of the Club. The majority of those plans have come to fruition since then. Now, it’s time to retake that pulse, see how we’re comparing against established benchmarks, and make new plans for the future. Let us know how to serve you so that we can continue to rank as a Platinum Club of America for years to come. Look for a new member survey coming out in early January. I look forward to hearing your feedback and working together to continue this proud tradition of greatness. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club Cherry Diamond F DECEMBER 2016 F 7

However, once I spoke with Najah and did a tour of the facility, I was hooked. CD: When did you become a member? DB: October 2016 CD: Are you planning to get involved in other Club offerings? DB: I’m considering the different Clubs Within the Club to potentially join. There are several to choose from, and it’s just a matter of picking one to join. Heart THE

of the Hands

JESSE LOPEZ (LEFT) STANDS BESIDE DAVID “HONEYBOY” EDWARDS’ CAST (LEFT) WITH SHARON MCCONNELLDICKERSON AND HER HUSBAND DAVID.

MAC personal trainer Jesse Lopez gave up playing guitar when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, until he encountered the work of Sharon McConnell-Dickerson, a blind artist with a degenerative eye disease. This is their emotional story of friendship and perseverance. For more than 20 years, Jesse Lopez has loved working with Missouri Athletic Club members as their personal trainer. He strives to motivate them to keep going when they feel like they’ve hit that breaking point. “I want good things for them. Hopefully, I motivate and push just enough that they take the ball and roll it on their own because once that ball gets rolling, it’s like this guitar,” Jesse says in reference to a Gibson Les Paul guitar that he affectionately refers to as “The Goddess.” To Jesse, the guitar is a symbol of friendship and perseverance, which characterizes his story. At nine years of age, Jesse began teaching himself to play guitar with soul and emotion. “Music is my life. I can’t read a note. I don’t want to read a note. I play with my heart,” said Jesse. Decades later, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which causes tremors, slow movement, stiffness, and loss of balance 10 F Cherry Diamond F DECEMBER 2016

along with other symptoms. “I thought it was over,” lamented Jesse. He stopped playing guitar and moved to Soulard to live vicariously through the musicians in the area. When he heard about the National Blues Museum opening just a block and a half from the Missouri Athletic Club in downtown St. Louis, he knew he had to get involved from the very beginning. “The National Blues Museum has become a second home, after the MAC,” said Jesse. As one of the top five volunteers, he was invited to the grand opening celebration on April 2, 2016. The museum’s opening day changed Jesse’s life. On display was Sharon McConnell-Dickerson’s A Cast of Blues exhibit. Sharon is a blind artist who created life-cast masks of 60 blues musicians, including Big George Brock, David “Honeyboy” Edwards, and Ruth Brown. “The work that Sharon has created speaks volumes about her talent

and perseverance as an artist – two traits that are integral to the creation of blues music,” says Dion Brown, Executive Director of the National Blues Museum and MAC member. Also, in the exhibit is a bronze cast of the hands of Jesse’s guitar idol, blues musician Johnny Winter. Jesse was drawn to the exhibit at once, but never got the chance to meet Sharon at the opening. At the time of the opening, Jesse had not picked up a guitar in almost two years, and he couldn’t remember the last time he had played in public. Yet, museum management encouraged Jesse to bring his guitar to the opening. He reluctantly obliged. When the band’s guitarist broke a string, management asked Jesse if he was ready to play in the interim. Mustering his courage, Jesse took a quick moment to stop by Sharon’s display and reverently touch the cast of Johnny Winter’s hands before stepping on stage. He remembers the

general manager pointing to his heart in reference to their interaction with the daughter of B.B. King, who Jesse quotes as saying, “You don’t play music with your hands; you play it with your heart.” “That’s the big story here: Don’t play with your hands; play with your heart,” said Jesse. Then, Jesse began to play, and he recalled, “I wasn’t scared anymore. I’ve never been scared playing music. I know it like the back of my hand; like training at the MAC.” After playing a couple of songs, Jesse got off the stage and joined the executive staff in the back office. “Everyone began crying. It was beautiful. It was the most emotional night of my life,” he shared. Later that evening, Jesse emailed Sharon to thank her. He summarized his email to her, “If someone who is visually challenged can create art, then someone that has Parkinson’s, who has been playing guitar his whole life and is a little shaky, can continue. You motivated me to do this, which is my passion. It’s my passion.” This was the start of their friendship, and they began to communicate regularly. A few months later, Jesse shared with Sharon that he planned to purchase a new, inexpensive guitar with different tuning capabilities from his other two. Sharon instantly thought of her guitar that had been sitting silent in the corner for quite some time—a Gibson Les Paul, which many consider to be the best. “I just knew that I needed to wave goodbye to that guitar right then,” says Sharon, “because it was going to be on its way to Jesse in St. Louis because he deserves to play the finest instrument.” A few

weeks later, the guitar arrived, signed by one of the blues legends that Sharon had cast: David “Honeyboy” Edwards. Musicians such as Bobby Rush, Hubert Sumlin, and Jimbo Mathus have played the guitar. To Jesse, the guitar was much more than an object. “It was about

That’s the big story here: Don’t play with your hands; play with your heart. friendship, faith, confidence, and breaking down barriers.” Jesse gratefully adds, “It’s a guitar about people who have taken me into their lives. I am speechless at times.” “I had been playing guitar for 50 years, and I felt like that had been taken away. I had given up, which is something I always tell my clients not to do. Don’t give up. Don’t give up. Volunteering at the museum gave me inspiration. That night changed my life by bringing back such a huge part of my life that I thought was gone. No, it’s not like it used to be, and it will never be like it used to be, but my confidence is back. I am not going to be the same, but I don’t have to be the same,” summarized Jesse. Jesse is forever grateful to Sharon

and her husband, David, for forging a relationship with him. “I have met so many wonderful people through this friendship,” he says. In late October, a writer from Blues magazine in Paris asked Sharon to come to St. Louis for an interview at the National Blues Museum about her exhibit. Sharon told the magazine about her friendship with Jesse, and he, along with the Cherry Diamond, participated in the interview. Sharon stayed at the MAC, and Sharon and Jesse met in person for the first time during this trip. Visit the MAC’s website or YouTube channel to view a portion of their interview. In November, Jesse traveled to Como, Miss. to visit the artist and her husband. “The biggest compliment you can give anyone is to invite them into your home,” says Jesse. During the trip, blues musician Johnny Riley joined Jesse for a blues session on Sharon’s front porch, and Sharon also cast Jesse’s hands. Sharon foresees Jesse’s journey taking him far. “This is what I predict, and I have a good ear, with the way your hands are now, shaking sometimes a little, maybe sometimes a tremor more than you would like, when you play that guitar, no one will sound like you, you will have original sound that many will remember for years to come.” Jesse says that the bottom line was that he never thought he’d play again, but that it has now become possible through friendship, new opportunities and inspiration. “It’s a new beginning,” says Sharon. Jesse hits the point home that nothing is too difficult. “A challenge is a challenge,” he says, “but nothing is insurmountable.”

Jesse encourages MAC members to support the National Blues Museum and Sharon’s artwork. “A Cast of Blues” is on display through Dec. 9 of this year. For more information, please call 314-925-0016 ext. 438 or snash@nationalbluesmuseum.org. Cherry Diamond F DECEMBER 2016 F 11

GREETINGS from the Kitchen

Let’s start with a Christmas wish for a happy and healthy holiday season! The culinary team is polished and ready to serve up some spectacular specials for the upcoming festivities. From the Sportsman’s Club lunch buffet and the wine dinners in the Art Lounge to all of the weddings and holiday parties, the Missouri Athletic Club shines like a star. The gingerbread display will have a special theme this year. We are portraying the Grinch who stole Christmas, and the incredible train display that will be part of it will be great fun for all ages. Let’s not forget our contribution to our community. This year we held the Chef‘s Night Out fundraiser for Great Circle, having the largest attendance in their history. Tamer, Linda and I participated in the St. Vincent Home for Children’s Kooking for Kids event, the St. Andrew Society’s Celebration of Spring, and the St. Louis Chef’s de Cuisine fundraiser at Anheuser Busch for more than 400 people. All of these events help the community and show our Club’s greatness. As the leaves fall and that snap of cold comes into the air, remember that Santa is on his way. So let’s get the turkey cooking for Thanksgiving dinner and roast some prime rib for the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day grand buffets. My team and I look forward to serving you this holiday season at one or more of these holiday events. During this special time of the year, remember to spend time with your loved ones and enjoy all the wonders that make up the holiday season. — Executive Chef Bart Philipps C.E.C. and Culinary Staff 12 F Cherry Diamond F DECEMBER 2016

Russian River Ranches is cuvee of distinct vineyard lots, each contributing its own personality to the wine. These vineyards come together to create a Chardonnay that is consistent from year to year and remains among the most coveted in each and every vintage. True to the Russian River Ranches style, this wine is beautifully focused with a nice, bright acidity balanced by a long finish and a light mid-palate creaminess. Tasting Notes: This vintage is very aromatic, fruit forward, loaded with aromas of lemon and lime, and accented with nougat, green apple, spices, pear and touches of wet stone minerality. Crisp and zesty flavors of lemon drop, green apple, white peach and lychee are accented with a nice barrel spice and persistent lime.

2013 Sonoma County Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvee Mountain Cuvee is a modern, vineyard-sourced California Bordeaux red that over delivers quality for the price. Tasting Notes: Loaded with blackberry, dark plum, and black raspberry mingled with clove, tea, and spices, this seriously crafted yet surprisingly approachable red leaves a medium-bodied mouthful. Driven by dark cherry fruit, creamy cocoa, and vanilla, this wine is framed by smooth tannins and a long, rich finish and is intended to be enjoyed within fives years of vintage.

Dinner

with Advanced Sommelier

DLYNN PROCTOR By Certified Sommelier, Nichole Miller-Kirk

In August, I attended TEXSOM, a gathering of some of the world’s leading wine professionals in Dallas; an experience unmatched by any other thus far in my career. The first evening we all went to dinner where I met an icon in the field, DLynn Proctor. Proctor is one of the four-featured subjects in the internationally acclaimed wine documentary SOMM, covering the three-year journey through six countries of filming to becoming a coveted Master Sommelier. For those who haven’t watched the film, I implore you do so. I had the immense honor of sharing a few bottles with him that evening where we covered a gamut of topics that influence our field. It was inspiring! Proctor was named Best Sommelier

in America by Wine & Spirits Magazine in 2008, was a finalist in The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Société Mondiale du Vin Best Sommelier in America Competition in 2008 and 2009, and was named to the National RUDD Scholars of 2011. Proctor has been featured in Decanter, Wine Spectator, Wine & Spirits Magazine, Wine Enthusiast, The Tasting Panel, WineSearcher, Huffington Post, The New York Times and many other publications. DLynn and I have remained in contact over the past few months, and I am pleased to announce that he will be showcasing the top tier wines from the Penfold’s portfolio on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016 at the West Clubhouse. This selection is not easily found in the

marketplace because they are something of a rarity; what we in the biz refer to as “unicorn” wines. I am overjoyed at the fortuity to share this event with the MAC’s membership. The dinner will be all-inclusive for $125 with full courses to complement the selections and the option of purchasing the wines at a retail cost. However, the chance to meet and greet such a person within our own Club is priceless. Seating is limited, and reservations can be made on the MAC website. engagements For many, as soon as the holiday season comes to an end and the sleigh bells stop ringing, the wedding bells begin to chime. The exact percentage varies depending on the source, but the general consensus is that the majority of engagements happen between Thanksgiving and Valentines Day. For those who get engaged this holiday season, here’s a little advice from the MAC’s wedding planning expert: Book vendors and venue early! You don’t need to do any detail planning that far out, but should get your contracts signed. The week after Christmas is traditionally our busiest week for wedding calls. — Linda Soncasie, Director of Catering Call 314-539-4470 to save your date!

Then, Max Shapiro, April Brautigam, Lisa Cancila and Margaret Wright persevered through a power outage to win the tournament! The pro-am doubles round-robin tournament started at 6 p.m. and each of the nine teams played four rounds before the outage occurred around 8 p.m. The Club quickly illuminated the courts with candles and flashlights, and players and fans enjoyed some extra time socializing while waiting for the power to return.
