from the president Happy holidays and merry Christmas!

This is the season to re-engage with the Missouri Athletic Club. We have been blessed with a great year. Our membership is strong; our finances are solid; and we are making progress on numerous improvements at both locations. Let’s finish 2017 by celebrating CHRISTMAS AT THE MAC! Here are some suggestions: Challenge yourself by taking fitness classes in the newly renovated functional training rooms on 5M or the 11th floor at the Downtown Clubhouse. Don’t wait for the New Year’s resolutions! Hermann Trophy Banquet is Jan. 5, 2018 – make your reservations now. Carli Lloyd, one of the best female soccer players in the world will be our featured speaker. Not to mention there will be the presentation of the Hermann Trophy to the best female and male college soccer players. Reserve your spot or a table for the Jack Buck Sports Awards on Dec. 11. Come celebrate the 48th year of recognizing achievements in sports throughout the St. Louis area. Specifically, come watch Yadier Molina as he accepts the Sports Personality of the Year award! Identify a neighbor, friend, co-worker or relative that would benefit by joining the MAC. What better time to attract new members so they are ready to get involved for 2018? Savor the many incredible items on the dinner menus at the West Clubhouse and Downtown Clubhouse. The holidays are a great time to invite friends and family to dinner. Don’t wait for the weekends; beat the rush and dine during the week. Thank your employees or co-workers for a great year by taking them to lunch at the MAC. Treat the security guards in the building to a nice bowl of chicken gumbo! Motivate your family on a cold night, and drive downtown to see the phenomenal train display, which is a long-standing tradition provided by some of our talented members and staff. Grab some cocoa and dinner while you are there! 4 F Cherry Diamond F DEC 2017

Ask your spouse, sweetheart or special someone out to dinner, and then spend a night in one of our renovated hotel rooms downtown. This is a great getaway from all those crazy holiday demands and a loud house of relatives! Shop ‘til you drop at our pro shops at both locations. These are great places to satisfy all your Christmas gift lists. Who doesn’t want a pullover, shirt or jacket with the CLASSIC MAC logo!? Attend one of the STUPENDOUS events at the MAC during December. Cocktails with Santa (Dec. 4); Apollos Nursing Home/ Caroling Tour (Dec. 4); Breakfast with Santa (Dec. 9 & 16); Family Brunch with Santa (Dec. 10); Christmas Eve Brunch and Dinner; Christmas Day Dinner. Take just a few seconds and thank every MAC employee that you see during the holidays. The MAC is special for many reasons – an important one is our employees. Toast in the New Year at both locations. Finish this year at the MAC, and start the new year at the MAC! Host your family or office holiday party at the MAC. Wouldn’t it be easier to just have someone else handle all the details? Stop fretting, and call either location to reserve a

banquet room for a great event. Entertain at least five people in December in the 1903 bar. It doesn’t have to be one night; it could be several. Make a list now regarding the MAC events you will attend in 2018. Sign up for at least one Club Within a Club for 2018. Promise yourself that you will visit the improved fitness areas at both locations weekly! Announce to every non-member you know that they are missing all the FUN at the MAC. Cherish every moment during the holiday season with your family and loved ones. We are blessed by the many things we have in this country. On behalf of the Board of Governors, I wish you and your family a great holiday season, a merry Christmas, and a happy New Year. Can’t believe all the FUN I’m having!

from the general manager As I write this column, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and the New Year is right around the corner. Upon reflection, it has been an awesome year of events, activities and accomplishments for the Missouri Athletic Club. We are ending the year on a high note, and we have much to look forward to in the New Year. The MAC’s achievements would not be possible without the hard work, year-round, of our dedicated staff. We see them every day, or if we don’t see them, we see the results of their service, whether it be the delicious meals produced in the kitchen, perfectly set tables, clean dishes and linens, running elevators and functioning HVAC. Our hardworking staff keeps our two facilities running smoothly all year long. This is the time of year when the membership traditionally shows their appreciation by contributing to the Employee Holiday Fund. The MAC’s employees are always incredibly thankful to the Club’s membership for their generosity and appreciation. Some of the funds are also allocated to the foundations and the CSC, and they are used to carry on the Club’s values of tradition, community and culture. As you are aware, your October 31, 2017 statement included a voluntary contribution that can be adjusted up, down, or eliminated altogether, if desired, by contacting the Accounting Department or clicking the link in the article on the website. Please be as generous as you can. Without the staff’s dedicated service, the Missouri Athletic Club would not be the Platinum Club of America held in high esteem today. Thank you for your generosity. I also bring good tidings of great joy! Not only did the MAC’s staff make Santa’s nice list this year, but so did the membership! Through the member survey, Santa clearly heard that an improved fitness experience was on your wish list, and he put the elves into action. By the time you receive this

publication, the newly renovated functional training room on the 11th floor of the Downtown Clubhouse will be open and ready for use – before Christmas! After Christmas, you’ll start to hear more about the master plan concept for the fitness expansion and renovations at the West Clubhouse that was recommended by the Planning Committee and approved by the Board of Governors at the November board meeting. I’m going to reiterate a point from last month’s column because it’s important: Stephen Covey, the author of Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, recommends starting with the end in mind, which is exactly what your Club’s leaders have been doing regarding the fitness experience at the West Clubhouse. We’ve employed Steve Burns of V Three Studios LLC, the architect who designed the 1903 bar, to help us repurpose space at the West Clubhouse to address the Club’s longterm needs. The 1903 bar raised the standard of what a Platinum Club experience should feel like for MAC members, and our goal has been to emulate that standard in all our projects moving forward. We now have a long-range vision for the West Clubhouse’s building, which currently houses tennis, squash, racquetball, youth programs, a fitness center and weight room. We have a design concept and preliminary numbers. Now, we’re working through the design development, logistics, and timing. This is so exciting, and I can’t wait for the childlike Christmas joy you’ll experience upon seeing these plans come to fruition. In the short-term, Santa also heard that you wished fitness classes would be offered at other times. Starting in December, both clubhouses will begin offering some evening classes. Please give them a try, and share feedback. We want to ensure that the MAC is offering the fitness classes and times that are best for you. If it makes sense, tie them

into your New Year’s resolutions. Weight loss and getting in shape are common resolutions, and the MAC is thoroughly equipped to help you reach those goals. We can also assist with other resolutions. Here are a few of mine, for example: play more golf; drink better wine; and gain less than five pounds without breaking a sweat. During this season of giving and planning for the next year, I want to share with you a relevant rumor that got started at a terrific thank-you event I attended for our foundation donors a few weeks ago at 1903. While we were there, the conversation turned to the inevitable question of “what’s next?” Rumor has it that instead of the traditional Gala, this year on April 7, a black-tie President’s Ball will be held. The party will take place before the Board of Governors’ current officers transition out of their roles and the next class transitions into those roles. This will be a great opportunity to honor those outgoing officers and welcome the incoming officers as well as celebrate the foundations and honor those who have stepped up as All-Stars, Planned Givers and Sponsors. This will surely be a sell-out event, and those who stepped up will receive VIP preference. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait until then for many fun, memorable and exciting events at the MAC. This month’s calendar is packed with ways for you to celebrate the holiday season with family and friends. While the Club has many traditions, I hope that you make it part of your holiday tradition. I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy New Year! See you at the Club!

from the chefs EXECUTIVE CHEF BART PHILIPPS Let’s start with a Christmas wish for a happy and healthy holiday season. The culinary team is all polished and ready to serve up some spectacular specials for the upcoming season. From the Sportsman’s Club lunch buffet and the wine dinners in the Art Lounge to all the weddings and holiday parties, the Missouri Athletic Club shines

like the north star and is proud of it. The gingerbread display will have a special theme this year. We will have gingerbread buildings from around the world, and the train display will be even more spectacular. Many thanks to everyone involved in this display. Bring the kids down or just stop by for dinner to enjoy the display. It is great fun for all ages. I would like to thank the members that make up the MAC family along with the staff that help make this a special club of which to be a part. So, let’s get ready to

roast some prime rib for the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day grand buffets. My team and I look forward to serving you this holiday season at one or more of these holiday events. At this special time of the year, remember to spend time with your loved ones and enjoy all the wonders that make up the holiday season.

Executive Chef Barton Philipps CEC and Staff

The culinary team is all polished and ready to serve up some spectacular specials for the upcoming season.”

CHEF GRANT HIGGS As I look back to Oct. 15, 2012, the day when I first took over the culinary operations at the West Clubhouse, I think, “wow, look how far we have come!” We can now offer the membership almost anything they want. We have a custom brew program. We have a club sommelier. We have a great mixologist. We have a phenomenal crew – both front and back of house. I couldn’t be happier with the leaps and bounds we have made to

be a truly platinum-level establishment. The West Clubhouse had a great year. We finished up the fiscal year with $600,000 more in sales than last year. The membership is loving the new adultsonly 1903 bar. The snack bar saw record revenues with fun new menu items. Banquets are better than ever. We are changing the menu seasonally, using as much local fare as possible. This holiday season we are offering prime rib to-go dinners, which is a great and easy option for guests as well as a nice family dinner.

The holiday gift baskets last year were a huge hit, and we are happy to offer them again this year with an even more streamlined process. Surprise that special someone with a gift basket stocked full of MAC goodies. Have a happy and safe holiday season! See you around the Club!

SANTA SLIM-DOWN Christmas came early at the MAC! Fitness spaces received updates, renovations and new equipment so Santa and Mrs. Claus took an opportunity to work out. Get on Santa’s “Nice List” and utilize the new offerings!

The fitness department got an early visit from Santa this year! Members wished for improved fitness offerings, and spaces have been updated, renovated and decked out with new equipment. One of the spaces

recently completed is the 5M Functional Training Room at the Downtown Clubhouse. The old golf simulator room was recently transformed into a functional training space to be used for personal training, group

exercise classes and dynamic workouts. The space was completely gutted and renovated and brand new fitness equipment such as TRX straps, water rowing machine, free weights and punching bag was installed.

The Downtown Clubhouse athletic department is excited to have new state-of-the art equipment that the Club has never seen before, giving us the opportunity to offer a variety of classes! Having the Functional Training Room has also allowed trainers to push their clients to new limits as the possibilities are endless. — Courtney Hutt, Downtown Fitness Manager

FITNESS TIP It’s that time of year: the holidays! Lots of events, holiday parties, eating and drinking! The saying that you cannot out-exercise a bad diet is true. However, it is possible to make smart choices on how to navigate around those food choices. During holiday meals, eat healthy amounts of colorful foods (colorful foods are very nutritious!). Also, load up on turkey as it is a great source of protein. Stay away from the extra calories like gravy and keep bread, stuffing, and mashed potato portions small. Don’t forget to sign up for the MAC 12-Week Challenge in January to help lose those extra pounds gained from the holidays. Cherry Diamond F DEC 2017 F 17

This often leaves many parents wondering where to begin. To help simplify the process, here are some simple factors and tips to consider: INITIAL RESEARCH Conduct some initial research on what your child learned last year and what their test scores were. part of being a student at a private school in the area. Whether celebrating an accomplishment or grieving through tragedy, the St. Louis school community supports its students. A sense of community can deepen children’s private school experience. FINANCIAL AID Private schools do not have to equate to depleting the savings account. Many area schools have financial aid programs for children to get the best education possible. From grants to loans, many schools are more than willing to help out during this stressful yet important decision. PROXIMITY Throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area, schools are scattered throughout the city, county and surrounding suburbs. While it may not be the biggest priority in finding the perfect fit, distance can play a large role in the private school experience. From drop off to sports practices to studying at a friend’s house, consider the commute. Will it be more of a hassle than it is worth? If the answer is yes, seek out a better fit closer to home so everyone will be happier in the long run.

THE FYC

Sings the Blues “My friends, this is church. For ten bucks, you get to walk through the history of truly American music,” posted a visitor from Las Vegas after experiencing the National Blues Museum in downtown St. Louis. Since opening in April of 2016, the museum has already been listed as a “must-see” by prominent travel writers. It is no surprise, then, that members of the Forever Young Club made an early November journey to check it out. The FYC received a private tour that traced the history of the blues from thousand-year-old African guitar-like implements to today’s digital instruments and learned how technology spread the blues across the country. Sheet music, piano rolls, records, radio, jukeboxes, television and the internet contributed to the acceptance of the blues and its influence on American music. The museum is much more than static exhibits; it’s very interactive with opportunities to record your own mix or perform in a jug band. After the tour, the group was treated to a 90-minute live performance by St. Louis harmonica legend Jim McCleran and the MAC’s very own Jesse Lopez on the guitar while enjoying a buffet lunch from Sugarfire next door. OF Artist THE Month Prized Artwork in MAC Collection

The MAC houses two pieces of art by 19th century artist Harry Chase. Below is an excerpt from an article written by a distant cousin, Jeffrey Chace, who visited the Club from the Netherlands this past summer. The full article can be found online under Foundations > Foundation for the Arts.

LISA CRISMAN

St. Louis pastel artist Lisa Crisman’s work is bold, vibrant, fun and exciting! Don’t let the term “pastel” fool you. Pastels are chalk-like sticks of pure pigment, which Crisman takes full advantage of in her bright and vivid paintings. Crisman’s award winning work has been acknowledged in numerous local and national juried fine art exhibitions. Crisman’s work has been described as “Van Gogh meets Munch,” “vivid and expressive!” and “a new and contemporary take on the landscape.” She grew up in an idyllic, small town, Bowling Green, Missouri. Crisman, a third generation artist, states, “Being creative has always been a vital part of my life. I made my own paper dolls as a child and was constantly drawing, coloring and making things. Being an artist is a passion and dream come true for me. It’s in my blood.” You could say Crisman’s work somewhat reflects her upbringing in picturesque and tranquil small town America. Her paintings are inviting and dreamy, yet, they are also mystical and so vibrant as to be energetic and exciting. Using a bold and unconventional palette is extremely important to Crisman and an indelible part of her art. Crisman’s training is comprised of independent and private study. She has also studied with several acclaimed artists, including Richard McKinley, Jerry Brown and Albert Handell. A St. Louis resident, Crisman is a member of Art St. Louis, Gateway Pastel Artists, The St. Louis Artists Guild and the Greater St. Louis Art Association. She has been juried into hundreds of prestigious fine art exhibitions, and Crisman’s paintings hang in businesses and private collections nationwide and overseas. She is passionately devoted to painting her world vibrantly and boldly. To purchase any work on display, please contact Janet Jones at 314-539-7430.

Now nearly forgotten, Harry Chase was an influential American artist of importance in the late 19th century. During his short career, Chase earned a place among the elite artists of the eastern establishment, and he was rewarded with high honors and prestigious prizes for his work. An adherent of Dutch Impressionism, his paintings were de rigeur for any serious collection of American art well into the 20th century. Until recently, Chase’s vibrant yet brief life lay hidden to posterity, but his extensive oeuvre has endured as a powerful testament to his prowess as an artist. The Missouri Athletic Club possesses two superb works by Harry Chase. ABOVE: AFTERNOON AT YPORT, 1877-78, PARIS. ACQUIRED 1962, JAMES W. GARNEAU FAMILY.
