PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

What a wonderful time it is to be part of the Missouri Athletic Club. We just completed another wonderful holiday season, highlighted by some amazing events, specifically the Jack Buck Awards and the Hermann Trophy banquet. Both of these events have been re-broadcasted on Fox Sports over the last month, and it should be reassuring as a member to see our club highlighted in such a manner. Hoping everyone had the opportunity to take a post-new year exhale and set their resolutions in motion because the events calendar is about to pick up the pace. The Foundations’ Gala is just a couple of weeks away, and this is an event that you certainly don’t want to miss for a multitude of reasons. First off, it’s undoubtedly the party of the year at the MAC. The food is impeccable, the atmosphere is elegant and the fellowship in the room is off the charts. Once again, this year’s event will fall on Valentine’s weekend. If you and your sweetheart make an effort to get out for such an occasion, I can promise that there is no better landing spot than the Foundations’ Gala, and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. This year’s gala will focus a little less on the auction side and more on recognizing and thanking those who have contributed to the birth and success of our foundations. Don’t worry; we’ll still offer a live auction and our Golden Ticket raffle. I am sure the lovely Jennifer Kaniecki will encourage me to raise the auction paddle again in an effort to secure another lavish golf trip. She’s starting to come around, having just started speaking to me a couple months ago after last year’s gala. The gala is an integral component to both the awareness and enhancement of our foundations. As I mentioned last month, the foundations have become part of our everyday culture at the MAC and will be a significant contributor to the health of your club, your sons’ and daughters’ club and your grandsons’ 4 F Cherry Diamond F FEBRUARY 2016

and granddaughters’ club. Help us make an everlasting impact. Good Fellowship Day, always one of the more popular days on the event calendar, springs upon us in a few weeks on Feb. 20. This day always brings members out of the woodwork, probably because it’s one of the only free meals you can get nowadays. But the camaraderie, competition and fellowship make it such a special day for our members. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to enjoy some of the finest people you will meet in your life. The annual MAC Boxing Championship will be held on Feb. 25. There are a few sponsorships remaining that come accompanied with some fantastic ringside seating. This has become one of the more popular events on the social calendar. To help solidify your kitchen-pass for that evening, you should bring your spouse to the gala. And just around the corner, as we turn the page to March, we’ll host the MAC Hall of Fame induction. Established in 1993, the MAC Hall of Fame recognizes those who have distinguished themselves in the field or in the development of athletics. I’m honored to announce a star-studded field for the 2016 class – Troy Robertson and Kevin Cantwell for basketball, Colonel Leonard Griggs for Inspiration, Bill Suntrup and Gary Wideman for Distinguished Service, and MAC Tennis Director Kim Steinmetz in our Coach/ Administrator category. Don Gunn will receive the Dan Barks Award. I hope you will join us on March 3 to honor and welcome this group into our Hall of Fame. Speaking of hall of famers, our Golf Season Kickoff is slated for March 30, and it is anticipated that we’ll have Jay Randolph Sr., Jay Williamson and Jay Delsing on hand. It promises to be an enjoyable event. How could it not be while listening to this cast share stories and provide updates on the game? I encourage any member who has been intrigued by our golf program to come out and learn more about the amazing golf opportunities the MAC has to offer. And finally, the club is accepting nominations for those interested in running for the Board of Governors Class of 2016. Letters of intent are due on or before March 1. See page 7 for further details. May God bless the MAC and all of its members. See you around the Club,

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

Set the Pace Update: In June, I shared with you that our Board had approved the Set the Pace or Trane project to greatly improve and upgrade the HVAC system at the Downtown Clubhouse to comply with green energy standards and dramatically increase efficiency. The cost of this project is about $2.3 million, but the savings generated from this new efficient system are sufficient to pay for the project plus create positive cash flow moving forward. Trane guarantees the savings, and the MAC will see more than $200,000 in annual energy savings per year contractually. This project is fully underway, and I want to further emphasize its magnitude. Between 1934 and 1941, our air conditioning system was installed at the Missouri Athletic Club for the first time. The total cost of the project was $244,330.37. For more details, see the breakdown in the MAC Past section on page 31, which we dug out of our archives. The cost difference over 75 years is truly amazing. Some believe that the MAC was the first building west of the Mississippi River to have air conditioning. In fact, the installation was such new technology that members had to be reassured that the air was safe to breathe. Up until the Pace project, this same system was used to regulate airflow, heat and cool the MAC. Due to the funding sources available through Pace, our long overdue HVAC system upgrades are now reality.

»

Check out page 30 to see photos. Most of the units were so far gone that they were scrapped and totally replaced with entirely new units with variable speed motors and all new controls tied to a central system, which can be operated remotely. Fresh air from outside now gets pulled through the new clean units and heated or cooled depending on the time of year and economically distributed where and only when needed. The old HVAC units used to fill the entire spaces, but now compose a fraction of the area. One of the biggest aspects of this project is bringing our boiler back online, which costs about $700,000, but drives approximately 75-80% of the ongoing cost savings for this project. The boiler was installed in the early 1980s, but the MAC discontinued using it around 1983 because it made more sense to exclusively purchase steam from the city/Trigen. The cost of their steam went up a few years ago, and we saw a $100,000+ swing in our utility costs. Something needed to be done. The cost of running the existing boiler as-is with high-pressure steam required stationary engineers onsite 24/7 and cost roughly $250,000 annually in just payroll, which was the main reason that it was abandoned years ago. We decided to retrofit the boiler and bring it down to a lowpressure system for the majority of the building while continuing to stay on the loop with Trigen (city steam), and use their steam in just our laundry department, which requires high pressure. As a result, we’ve also created a redundancy so if our system ever fails or if Trigen ever fails, we now have a back-up system in place. When the boiler is back up and running towards the end of January, we will enjoy $10-15,000 in savings per month by using natural gas, which has become very affordable. Two new water softners are being installed as part of the boiler upgrade, which will improve the life and quality of laundered items (linens, uniforms, etc.) and remove residue, such as the

water spots seen on glassware. Pushing soft water into our showers and saunas will also be very obvious to our members. All of this work qualifies for Preservation Foundation funding being infrastructure within our historic building. My intent here is to paint a better overall picture of how our Preservation Foundation funds are used to sustain our historic clubhouse and maintain the viability of the MAC for years to come. These new systems will be in use 30 years from now. When we state that your contribution to the foundations is key to the longevity of the MAC, it’s not an exaggeration. The need to upgrade your HVAC system was real, and the monies from the Preservation Foundation allow us to do so without pulling from the general revenue of the club. Similarly, the Sports Foundation and Foundation for the Arts provide real benefits to the MAC and the St. Louis community. See page 12 for more about what’s happening with the Foundation for the Arts. This Set the Pace HVAC project is just one of many on a long list for the preservation of the Downtown Clubhouse. We will proudly recognize the pioneers and catalysts behind the establishment of the Preservation Foundation at our Foundations’ Gala Celebration on Feb. 13. Past Presidents Kim Tucci, Gerry Ortbals and Don Gunn will be called out and honored for their leadership and foresight in this important arena. These gentlemen have been behind raising more than $1 million for this cause, and I hope everyone comes out to party and give thanks to these great MAC leaders while supporting your club, our foundations and this worthwhile initiative. Hope to see you at the Gala on Feb. 13,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club Cherry Diamond F FEBRUARY 2016 F 5

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

»

Member Spotlight: Tom Dankenbring CD: How long have you been a member of the MAC? TD: I have been a member of the MAC since I graduated college, almost 14 years ago, and my dad has been a member since 1978. CD: Have you held any events at the club? If so, why did you choose the MAC? TD: My dad, brother and I host a “Lutheran Mafia” Christmas party each December, and I host client breakfasts, lunches and other business meetings weekly. I can’t think of a better venue to host an event than the MAC. The food, atmosphere, staff and fellow members are as good as it gets! CD: How have you utilized the club since joining?

Tom Dankenbring along with his wife Anna, sons Andrew (l) and Will (r), and

TD: I have used the club in several different ways. Up daughter, Molly. until a few years ago, I played on all the basketball leagues. “It’s been fun playing with you, Dank. See Serving Our you again in the league when your kids get older,” Community Gary Sextro has joked. I workout in the mornings Since 1966 with all of my “0-600” friends. My family and I utilize the club for brunches and other events, and my wife, Anna, and I go to a lot of the evening events such as the Foundations’ Gala and Casino Night. I “We work each day towards the greater good swing by the Jack Buck Grille for a cocktail once in of our customers, our a while and am really excited about the opening of fellow employees and our 1903. I’ve also been on several committees, which has community.” been a great way to interact with other members as F.W. Rundquist well as a way to give back to the club. C.O.B, C.E.O

CD: Have you joined any Clubs Within the Club? If so, which ones? TD: I’ve been a part of the Golf Club, and I was a past president of the Associates. CWCs are a fantastic way to get to know other members with similar interests. CD: Have you brought any new members to the club? What advice would you give to fellow members in their recruitment efforts? TD: Yes, I’ve brought several new members to the club, and I currently serve on the Membership Committee. My main piece of advice is simply to invite a potential club prospect to either clubhouse for lunch or a drink and give them a tour. There’s a good chance they will bump into someone else they know, and I’m certain they will fall in love with the club itself and the atmosphere. Inviting friends to club events such as the Jack Buck Awards, Boxing Championship or Hermann Trophy banquet is a great way to introduce them.

Art Foundation Receives Gift Of Two Paintings Of Historic Significance By Paul Weil, Chairman, MAC Art Foundation You will recall that the Club suffered a disastrous fire in 1914. The architect for the rebuilding of the Clubhouse was Tom Barnett (1870-1929). Although architecture was his occupation, painting was Barnett’s pastime. He was born and lived in St. Louis, studied architecture with George I. Barnett and studied painting with his contemporary St. Louisian, Paul Cornoyer (1864-1923), who had studied in Paris and returned to New York City, where Cornoyer achieved national recognition as an impressionist painter. Barnett exhibited at the Louisiana Purchase Expo in St. Louis in 1904 where he won a gold medal for architecture and in the Portland Expo in 1905 where he won a bronze medal. He was a member of the artist guilds of St. Louis and Chicago. The history of the Club’s art collection began in 1918 with its purchase of its first oil painting, Windswept Meramec River, by Barnett. At that time there was no art in the clubhouse, nor a formal proposal that there be any, and no Art Committee. In fact, the Art Committee was not created until 1940, when a few men sitting around the Wall Street Table felt that Club was long overdue for making the MAC a repository for a significant art collection. The MAC Art Foundation was created in 1991 at direction of Board of Governors and had as it purposes, among others, to assemble, collect and display works of art; enhance and enrich Club life through association with works of art, artists and art patrons; provide to the public a place for assembly, meeting and association in a cultural and artistic environment; and provide an opportunity for the permanent display of art collected by Members. 12 F Cherry Diamond F FEBRUARY 2016

In December 2015, many of those purposes were fulfilled when the Art Foundation received two additional paintings by Tom Barnett, shown above, which had been owned by a former Member and which were bequeathed to the Foundation by his widow. One painting is a harbor scene and the other is a woodland scene, similar to Windswept Meramec River. All three paintings will be on display in the Preservation Gallery of the Downtown Clubhouse during the month of February 2016 as part of its Gala Celebration. During 2015, the Art Foundation also restored a painting which has hung in the Art Lounge for years and is familiar to all. The painting is entitled Taxi Please and depicts a happy clown with his foot on a small tricycle. The painting exemplifies the warmth of Club membership verses the sadness derived from not being a “participant,” which all clowns try to dispel. That same feeling of “sharing” will result from donations to the Club’s foundations, the purposes of which are to enhance the Club membership experience and continue to highlight for all of St. Louis the prominent position which the Club has played in

this City during the 100 years since the 1914 fire.

From “Hello” to “I Do”: An MAC Love Story Governor Becky Bahn and her fiancé, John Kingston shared their love story with the Cherry Diamond and why they have the MAC to thank for it. CD: When did you become a member of the MAC? BB: I’ve basically grown up at the club. My father [Past President William S. Bahn] started bringing me to the club before my first birthday. When I turned 25, I started my own membership and I have been a regular at both clubhouses ever since. I’ve been to nearly 35 Breakfasts with Santa, which might be a record. JK: I joined the club in 2000. I was the first person in my family to become a member. I had recently moved back to St. Louis from Boston to practice law. The main reasons I joined were to work out and to play basketball. Because I worked downtown, the MAC just made sense. CD: Tell us how you met. JK: We first met during the Informal Candidates Dinner when Becky was running for the Board of Governors. Troy Robertson introduced us, and was very obviously trying to set us up. I thought Becky was incredibly pretty, became super nervous, and cracked some terrible joke. Then Troy made exactly the kind of face that he makes when I blow a layup on the Fifth Floor. I figured that Becky would never talk to me again, but we continued to bump into each other at club events and kept in touch during the next few months.

Then—out of the blue—she invited me to play golf. Unfortunately for me, Becky has a pretty low handicap and I’m even worse at golf than I am at basketball. My first two tee shots went into the woods and her (only) tee shot split the fairway. My round was as ugly you could imagine, but we actually had a terrific time. BB: After golf, we went up to grab a drink on the patio and ended up spending four or five hours talking. When they were closing down and he finally walked me to my car, there was this really awkward handshake/ hug to end the evening. I wasn’t sure what to think. Fortunately, he asked me to dinner the following week, and I invited him as my date to the 50 Year Member Dinner at the MAC the week after. We’ve been dating steadily since that night and were engaged about a year and a half later! CD: You are getting married on Feb. 5 of this year. How did you decide on the MAC for your wedding ceremony and reception? BB: We honestly didn’t even consider anywhere else. We met at the MAC because of our involvement with the MAC, and it’s also what my father would’ve wanted. Our ceremony will take place in the Missouri Room, followed by cocktails

and hors d’oeuvres in the Art Lounge and then dinner and dancing back in the Missouri Room. It’s the perfect spot. JK: There’s no room like the Missouri Room, and we would never have met if it weren’t for the MAC. CD: What relationship advice would you give to other couples that are also members at the MAC? BB: I think it’s a good idea to ease into a relationship. Become friends and see if you share the same interests, values and goals. The MAC is a great place for couples because you can get to know each other through different club events. JK: I think I better leave the relationship advice to Becky. CD: What kinds of things do you enjoying doing at the club as a couple? BB & JK: We play quite a bit of golf through reciprocal clubs and enjoy attending social events at the club. We frequently grab dinner after work in the Jack Buck Grille and have regular work out and dinner dates at both clubhouses. Friendly competition in the golf simulator is also one of our favorites. Pairs Well With: Salmon with dill, thai green curry, carnitas, Mediterranean lamb, plus the basic roast pork, beef and chicken. The bright red fruit and crisp acidity in this Zinfandel make the perfect “ethnic food” wine.

Joullian Monterey Chardonnay 2013 Tasting Note: Brilliant, pale green straw-gold color. Vibrant lime, Anjou pear and hazelnut nose. The Forever Young Club Meets St. Louis’ Spirited Faust Family Elizabeth Terry is a St. Louis-based historian and author of Oysters to Angus: Three Generations of the St. Louis Faust Family. As told in the book, Tony Faust entered rough and rowdy St. Louis in the mid-nineteenth century. He lived lavishly while rebelling against those who wished to shut down his saloon. Tony’s son, Edward, rose to the top of St. Louis business elite, shunning his German heritage along the way. In contrast, his son, Leicester, quietly built a farm in St. Louis County (today’s Faust Park). Through it all, the Fausts navigate the timeline alongside the iconic Busch family. Join Elizabeth Terry and the Forever Young Club at the West Clubhouse on Friday, Feb. 19 at 11:30 a.m. for a fun look at the Faust family.

Proxy Registration

What’s on the Web

The website’s proxy functionality allows members to make a registration for a separate account without needing to also include themselves on the registration. For example, if you would like to register your child for camp, it will allow you to register the child account and leave yourself off the registration. The key to using this functionality is ensuring that dependent accounts are setup for the website. If your spouse does not have an account or your children are not tied to your member account, please contact the Membership Department. Include the Membership Department’s contact information. The following tutorial explains how to act as a proxy and register others for an event. Once logged into the website, follow these steps: 1. Select the desired event from the calendar. 2. Select “click here to register.” 3. The Event Registration page will open.

Workers continue construction as viewed from the lower level of the clubhouse.

1903 Bar and Patio Construction Update Construction is moving along on the 1903 bar and patio at the West Clubhouse. Steel beams were delivered in late December and the outdoor patio is beginning to take shape. To stay up-to-date on construction progress, check out the live webcam feed available online on the My MAC homepage of the website.

4. Select Party Size from the drop down menu in the upper left of the page for the number of people you would like to register. 5. If you are making the reservation for a dependent, such as registering a child for a camp or a clinic, uncheck the “include me in this reservation” box. 6. Then click “+spouse” or “+child” to add a dependent to the reservation. If your spouse and children are part of your member profile, then their information will automatically populate into the reservation. If not, please contact the membership department to add dependents to your account. 7. To include other members in your reservation, search by last name or member number in the right column and click on their name to add them to the reservation. 8. Click the “x” to the left of the name to remove someone from the reservation. 9. If you would like to add a guest to the reservation who is not a member, click “+guest.” Then click the “AddNew” tab at the top and complete the form. 10. Once all of the registrants have been added to your reservation, click “save registration” in the bottom right of your screen. 11. If the “notify” box is checked next to the registrant’s name, then they will receive an email confirming the reservation. You will also receive a confirmation email for making the reservation. If you have any questions about using the website to register for events, please contact webmaster@mac-stl.org.

Out with the Old, In with the New: PACE Renovation Continues

above: Water softening units are installed in the basement; New air handling equipment is installed; Old dampers are removed; New air handling units result in cost and heating efficiency; New computer programming equipment is installed, so that means manual adjustments are no longer needed!

As the PACE renovations continue, old, nasty HVAC air handling equipment from the early 1940s is being replaced with brand new, clean and efficient units. This allows for improved heating and cooling in the club as well as far less manual labor by the maintenance

team. Water softening equipment has been installed in the basement, which will result in cleaner water for drinking and cleaning. The basement boiler has been brought online once again, which will result in cost and heating efficiency.

Since the 1980s, the club has been using steam from the city to heat the building. Thank you for your patience as our clubhouse’s environment is transformed. Out with the old, in with the new!
