PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

And Down the Stretch They Come... It’s hard to imagine, but our Senior Board class is at the three-quarter pole in our final year of service. For me, the year has been extremely rewarding and continues to move at lightning quick pace. Our Board and Senior staff have accomplished much including an almost $20 million revenue budget, tackling our membership retention and recruitment challenges head on, and rolling out a comprehensive member survey to help determine our capital plan moving forward. Please find updates below for these key categories: MEMBERSHIP: For the fiscal year, we are +32 members headed towards a goal of +50 with four months remaining. Since last May, we are +49 members. Additionally, we are coming off the two best back-to-back months in the last DECADE, plus 22 and 21 (at time of print). This is HUGE news. Great job to our membership team led by Patti Cundiff and President Elect Mike Schoedel. Continued membership strength brings many of our member “wants” closer to reality. It’s very exciting to think about our future if these trends hold steady. FINANCE: F Operating cash flow is +$113,000 over budget. F Total operating revenue is +$143,000 over budget. F Departmental operating income is +$201,000 over budget. F Membership dues are up $55,000, and initiation fees are up $20,000 over last year. F Credit to our finance team of Larry Absheer,

Pam Roth, and finance Chairman Duffy Dunn for renewed strength in this department.

SURVEY: At the time of print, more than 1,340+ members have filled out the survey with a few days remaining before the deadline. Once finalized, General Tracy Beckette, who has tirelessly chaired our Planning Committee, will work with all involved to review the results. The end goal is a prioritized list of member desired projects, with realistic funding sources, to present to the entire membership. Our hope is that this capital plan, alongside its accompanying cash flow projections, will be the road map for future Boards to navigate. It will also give the membership a true picture of things to come. Stay tuned! Speaking of great things to come in our near future. Our newly elected 2017-2018 Board officers are listed below. This is a great group of highly involved Club servants who are posed to push the Club forward. I look forward to a “peaceful transition of power” in May. Good luck men! For the fiscal year, our Club is on target to meet or exceed our membership and financial goals. Under the leadership of General Manager Wally Smith, the Club’s performance has been robust to this point. We humbly ask your continued support of the Club as we strive to reach our year-end benchmarks. If you haven’t visited us lately, I encourage you to come back soon. The food is better, the drinks are colder, and the camaraderie is as strong as ever! In service,

Board of Governors

The Missouri Athletic Club’s 15-member Board of Governors met recently and elected Mike Schoedel as the 102nd President of the Club and named the four other officers for 2017-2018. Tim Powers will serve as first vice president, Tim Slater as second vice president, Talmage E. Newtown IV as secretary and Paul Shuff, Jr. as treasurer. Schoedel will succeed President Troy Robertson. The officers will begin a one-year term of service in May. Schoedel and his family are passionate about the MAC and want to give back to the Club. He has served on the Finance, Long-Range Planning, Nominating, and Membership Committees. Schoedel works as a Senior Project Manager for Apex Oil Company, Inc. and lives in Frontenac, Mo. with his wife, Alyson, and their two children Madelyn and Patrick. Their family is very active with the MAC’s swim team.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

In the next few months, we’ll be sharing with you a summary of the results of our membership survey. As I write this column, the survey deadline is still looming, but more than 35% of the MAC’s members and spouses have fully or partially completed the survey todate. This is just excellent. We’re excited to delve into your feedback and use this information to plan for the future of the MAC. Governor Tracy Beckette is leading the Planning Committee. He has assigned Governor Paul Shuff to lead a task group for the Downtown Clubhouse and Governor Tim Powers to lead a task group for the West Clubhouse. They are looking at operation initiatives, capital expenditures, and the best utilization of our space, specifically our athletic and fitness facilities. We will use the results of the membership survey to create a three-to-five-year project and funding plan. The financial planning will encompass the many resources available to the Club, including our foundations. To reiterate an important point, support of the foundations is key to the longevity of the Missouri Athletic Club. The Preservation, Sports, and Arts Foundations represent the Club’s values of tradition, community, and culture, and they also provide tax-deductible 6 F Cherry Diamond F FEBRUARY 2017

funding opportunities for the MAC. One of the best ways to support the foundations is by attending our annual gala. If you haven’t already registered to the Foundations’ Gala with your sweetheart on Feb. 10, please do so. You don’t want to miss the party of the year. Also, consider inviting a friend to showcase the MAC at its finest. This is a great opportunity to introduce potential new members to the MAC. On that note, I want to recognize and give special thanks to Steve Albart and Jeff and Danielle Jacoby who tied for proposing the most new members in 2016. Both sponsored new members in December, which was the best recruitment month of 2016. See page 8 for a full list of our new members and sponsors from December. It’s exciting to start the new calendar year so strong. If you look at our first quarter financial summary on page 7, you’ll also see that our fiscal year is off to a great start. In summary, the revenue from departmental operations was about $2.9 million, which was $25,288 more than plan and $163,484 ahead of last year at the same time when we had a major construction project (1903) underway at the West Clubhouse. There are still renovation projects underway such as the Childcare facility at the West Clubhouse, which will be completed by the time you receive this magazine. The kids will certainly enjoy the bright colors and whimsical artwork. We’re already looking forward to the hustle and bustle of youth programs that comes with the spring and summer athletic programming mostly at the West Clubhouse. This issue gives a great overview of our upcoming offerings, which draws many of our families. Register in advance because we anticipate an influx of new members interested in these programs and the outdoor pool in the coming months.

We also foresee more great months of membership recruitment similar to December, which continues to bring the Club closer to its membership cap of 2,500 members. If you have someone in mind that you would like to propose as a new member, don’t wait. There are great things happening as the “MAC is on the move,” and no one should miss out on the fun and excitement. I look forward to seeing you at the Club and at the Foundations’ Gala!

College soccer’s rising young stars gathered at the MAC for the presentation of the Hermann Trophy. The award is presented annually to the top male and female players in the country. Wake Forest University senior midfielder Ian Harkes (Fairfax, Va.) and West Virginia University senior defender Kadeisha Buchanan (Brampton, Ontario) received the MAC Hermann Trophy – a 10-pound crystal soccer ball – as National Players of the Year in NCAA Division I men’s and women’s soccer. Harkes captained the Demon Deacons to a berth in the NCAA College Cup Final, scoring the game-winning goal in double overtime of the national semifinals, during a standout season in which he was named ACC Midfielder of the Year, ACC Tournament MVP and NCAA Tournament Offensive Most Outstanding Player. He is the second member of the Harkes family to be honored by the MAC after his father, John Harkes, was the MAC Player of the Year in 1987. It marks the first time a father and son have won college soccer’s top award. Runners-up for the men’s award were Florida Gulf Coast University junior forward Albert

Ruiz (Barcelona, Spain) and University of Maryland sophomore forward Gordon Wild (Cologne, Germany). Buchanan, a MAC Hermann Trophy finalist a year ago, also captained her school to the NCAA College Cup Final and was named the NCAA Tournament Defensive Most Outstanding Player. A four-time NSCAA All-American and fourtime Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, Buchanan anchored the Mountaineer defense to 18 shutouts, most in NCAA Division I, in 2016. She is a member of the Canadian Women’s National Team, earning Best Young Player accolades at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games. Runners-up for the women’s award were University of Southern California senior midfielder Morgan Andrews (Milford, N.H.) and Stanford University junior midfielder Andi Sullivan (Lorton, Va.). The 2010 Hermann Trophy winner and 2015 U.S. Women’s World Cup Championship team member, Christen Press, was the banquet’s featured speaker. See more photos on Facebook!

It is a many-layered production is Nebbiolo, the grape of grape in that its applications are vast and range from one production zone to “Tar and Roses” as it is commonly known in wine circles as these kinds of the next. Considering all of this, I felt it aromas that tend to protrude through necessary to have a dinner surrounding the dark mulberry and licorice notes the Mauro Molino portfolio and its that are its main archetype. This is a award-winning wines to better expose thin skinned grape similar in cultivation the membership to the incredible to Pinot Noir. I welcome you to join me for a Barolo wine dinner with the man himself, Mauro Molino, and together we will decipher the many attributes of this blockbuster grape. Having a winemaker who walks the vineyard, tends the soil and fosters a lifelong passion with the end result being art in a bottle is something that I want to share with the membership. 2014 Sonoma-Cutrer Russian River Ranches Chardonnay Russian River Ranches is cuvee of distinct vineyard lots, each contributing its own personality to the wine. These vineyards come together to create a Chardonnay that is consistent from year to year and remains among the most coveted in each and every vintage. True to the Russian River Ranches style, this wine is beautifully focused with a nice, bright acidity balanced by a long finish and a light mid-palate creaminess. Tasting Notes: This vintage is very aromatic, fruit forward, loaded with aromas of lemon and lime, and accented with nougat, green apple, spices, pear and touches of wet stone minerality. Crisp and zesty flavors of lemon drop, green apple, white peach and lychee are accented with a nice barrel spice and persistent lime.

2013 Sonoma County Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvee Mountain Cuvee is a modern, vineyard-sourced California Bordeaux red that over delivers quality for the price. Tasting Notes: Loaded with blackberry, dark plum, and black raspberry mingled with clove, tea, and spices, this seriously crafted yet surprisingly approachable red leaves a medium-bodied mouthful. Driven by dark cherry fruit, creamy cocoa, and vanilla, this wine is framed by smooth tannins and a long, rich finish and is intended to be enjoyed within fives years of vintage.

A Day to REMEMBER Preparing for the big day requires time, planning and inspiration. Let the MAC take care of the details so the only hitch happening is with the bride and groom!

NUMBER OF GUESTS This should be one of the very first things to consider when beginning wedding planning. The number of guests will dictate the size of the venue. As a rule of thumb, allow for 25-30 square feet of space per guest.

CHOOSING A DATE AND VENUE Selecting a date for a wedding should also be one of the first items on the to-do list since many soon-to-be-weds book venues at least six months in

advance. When selecting a venue, take into account wedding blackout dates, number of guests, budget, what’s included in the rental fee, and any other specifics. Tip: Waiting for a date could result in more bargaining power. Calling for an open date only a couple months in

Make it a MAC Wedding: The Missouri Athletic Club provides the perfect venue with its stunning Missouri Ballroom.

I can’t thank you enough for the most perfect reception. David and I had an absolute blast. You and your staff are amazing! Thank you for everything. – Dani E.

advance could save up to 25% and Friday and Sunday weddings should cost 30% less than Saturday dates.

Thank you so much for all of your help throughout this process! It was a gorgeous wedding, and I am so thankful to have had it held at the MAC. My parents and my sister had their wedding receptions there so it means a lot to keep it in the family. Our guests had an amazing time and really enjoyed their dinner. As for John and me, it was the best day of our lives, and I can’t imagine having celebrated it anywhere else! Thank you again for everything! – Chrissy S. Accommodating 400 seated guests, the ballroom is ornately decorated and offers a long list of inclusions as part of its wedding package such as a wedding cake, fourhour open bar, multi-course meal service, self-parking in the garage, a personal event manager and more!

PHOTOGRAPHERS, FLORISTS AND BANDS, OH MY! Allow one vendor to point the way to others. The photographer(s) chosen for the big day will more than likely have references to florists whose blooms really “pop” or bands that really pack the dance floor. These experts know what works and what doesn’t. Leave room for their suggestions! Make it a MAC Wedding: The Club offers a list of its tried and true, top-notch vendors! Meet with a MAC event manager today to get the inside scoop!

TRIM THE BUDGET One of the simplest ways to cut down on costs is to lighten the guest list. Half of wedding expenses are spent on wining and dining guests. If costs average $100 per person, cutting down on a table of 10 will result in $1,000 of savings.

48-50% for reception, 8-10% for flowers, 8-10% for attire, 8-10% for entertainment/music, 10-12% for photography/video, 2-3% for gifts, and 8% for any miscellaneous expenses. It’s also wise to set aside an extra 5-10% for surprise expenses such as invitation misprints or umbrellas for a rainy day.

GET ORGANIZED

THE KIDS ZONE

Organization: It’s essential to pulling off a wedding with very little hiccups. Keep a three-ringed binder for all correspondence with vendors, notes from any meetings, inspirational tear sheets/photos and any other material that needs to be saved. Set up a special email address just for the wedding, and store any important vendor phone numbers.

MAKE IT LEGIT

WALLET WISDOM A typical wedding budget will be divided up following this formula:

Deciding whether or not to allow children is a big decision. A few choices available are to allow kids with open arms, hire a childcare service during the reception, or keep the wedding an adults-only event. Just be sure to make it a uniform decision to decrease the risk of hurt feelings.

Read up on marriage licenses and their requirements. Double check when the office issues licenses and give a copy to a trusted member of the wedding party.

My wife and I hosted our daughter’s wedding reception in the Missouri Ballroom preceded by a reception downstairs in the Art Lounge. I wanted to let you know what a truly wonderful and memorable experience we enjoyed. The ballroom was spectacular and the service from the entire staff for the reception, dinner, and bar service was impeccable. The MAC is fortunate to have such a dedicated staff. My wife and I had our reception almost 35 years ago in the Crystal Room. Based on the success and numerous compliments we received, it looks like we have found the venue for our next two daughters’ weddings! Again, a hearty thank you to the staff for creating a night we will never forget. – Jim W.

KEEP A PAPER TRAIL Get important details such as venue rental times or vendor arrival times in writing. Follow-up with a confirmation email for clarification rather than assuming everything is set.

SCHEDULE THE SETUP Allow ample time for wedding setup. If renting a venue, ensure that outside vendors are allowed and confirm arrival times. The best option is to have most set-up occur a day in advance, but

if that is not feasible, see about set-up occurring in the hours preceding the wedding.

MEAL MANAGEMENT While planning the food for the reception, don’t forget onsite vendors such as the DJ/band, photographer or videographer. To save money, make sure that it’s not required to serve the same food to the vendors that guests will receive. Choose a less expensive, yet hearty meal for them instead. Be

sure to let the wedding caterer know a few days in advance exactly how many vendors and guests will need to be fed. Make it a MAC Wedding: The Club provides exquisite meal options prepared by its executive chef that are perfect for any taste or budget. Let the MAC whip up a delectable menu for the special day!

TAKE TIME FOR YOU On the wedding day, allow for some “me time” to recharge, grab a breath or simply take it all in. Hiring a dayof coordinator will help ensure that everything will be taken care of even while fitting in some down time to relax and enjoy.

ANTICIPATE CHALLENGES No wedding will ever come off perfectly so mentally prepare for some things to not go as planned. Double

and triple-check the list and remain cool. Although it’s impossible to plan for everything that could possibly go wrong, revisiting a checklist and preparing mentally can alleviate overlooking something big.

SIT BACK AND ENJOY Amongst the hustle and bustle day-of, most couples forget to take a few minutes to look around and soak everything in. Months of planning, sweat and work have resulted in a spectacular, once-ina-lifetime event that should be enjoyed and appreciated—especially by the newlyweds. Make it a MAC Wedding: For more information about hosting a fantastic wedding and/or reception at the MAC, contact the Catering Department at 314-539-4470.

The service, venue, experience, and everything else at the MAC was absolutely perfect. Our reception could not have been more perfect, and the food was even better than the tasting (I don’t know how that is possible)! Thank you for being so accommodating and making our day unforgettable and perfect. – Brittany P.
