from the president One of my goals for the year has been to encourage the presence of Governors at not only the MAC events but also at Clubs Within the Club meetings. At the beginning of every month, I disseminate to the Governors a list of all meetings and events and encourage one or more Governors to commit to attend at least

one or two events or meetings every month in addition to their Board and Committee meetings. The purpose of their participation is to create further communication among the members and disseminate facts about Club initiatives. I also mentioned I would ask an occasional Board member to write

this column to share their point of view and to give the membership greater exposure to other members on the Board. This month, First Vice President Aaron Pawlitz offered the below column on a topic of his choosing. He has raised a great discussion on enjoyment for you to consider.

from the first vice president Since 1903, St. Louisans and their guests have gathered at the Missouri Athletic Club. Those who glance even briefly at the Club’s calendar observe that our clubhouses are full of activity and that a variety of interests animate those activities. That variety offers something for almost everyone and underscores the value of membership in the Club. In March 2011, I was officially extended an invitation to join the Missouri Athletic Club. I’m grateful to have been given that opportunity to become a member, and— because of how much I value the Club—I wish I would have joined sooner. My journey towards membership began, in significant part, in the late springs of 1991 and 1992, when I attended my high school proms in the Downtown Clubhouse’s grand ballroom known as the Missouri Room. That journey continued for the next 20 years as friends and business connections patiently encouraged me to consider seeking an invitation to membership. Each of you has your own story that illuminates how you came to enjoy the benefits of membership in the Missouri Athletic Club. Perhaps what motivated that story remains the primary reason you remain in membership today. Or, on the other hand, perhaps what first drew you to the Club is no longer what primarily compels you through life at the Club. No matter why you joined or why you remain in membership, I encourage you to consider the common theme among our members. I believe that the common theme 4 F Cherry Diamond F FEB 2019

is not athletics and fitness. The universal ingredient, I would argue, is not dining. Nor is it the opportunity for deeper and wider social connections. To perhaps state the obvious, certainly each of these themes is celebrated by many of our members. And, I have witnessed that it is the case that our Club’s staff takes great pride in delivering high-value programs and other offerings around the three important themes of athletics, dining, and social engagement. But, nonetheless, I believe a different tie binds together the entire membership. That theme is enjoyment. For young and old across all seasons of life, the Missouri Athletic Club offers something to enjoy. Those seeking to enjoy a moment of peace in the midst of the busy-ness of life settle with a glass of wine, a good book, or both into a chair in the majestic Art Lounge. Those seeking to enjoy the opportunity to provide hospitality to their families gather their loved ones—in both moments of joy and moments of reflection or remembrance—in the 1903 dining room. Those seeking to enjoy some friendly competition or banter meet up for cards, cardio, or Cabernet. Those seeking to ensure that their business affiliates enjoy productive time in meetings gather for lunch discussion in the Sportsman’s Club. Those seeking to further educate their children about proper conduct in professional and social settings enjoy introducing a daughter or a son to fellow members at Mother’s Day Brunch, at an

Apollos performance, or at one of the many civic events hosted in our clubhouses. Here I invested a couple paragraphs arguing that the pursuit of enjoyment is the common denominator among members not because I believe you are incapable of seeing it with your own eyes. It doesn’t take a guest writer on the page typically reserved for the President’s Column to point out the obvious. I raised the discussion for two reasons: First, I invite each of us to believe that the future well-being of the Missouri Athletic Club must be grounded on the simple proposition that the Club must continue to provide for the enjoyment of its members. If we focus upon achieving this goal, our pursuit of the appropriate calibrations for our governance system, our programs, our facilities, and our other operations will certainly succeed. My second reason for raising the discussion about enjoyment is so that we each gain a greater appreciation for our fellow members. Those members who enjoy the Club for reasons different than ours are, no less than we, contributors to defining the story of the Missouri Athletic Club for the next 116 years and beyond. My hope is that the Club provides you rich enjoyment in 2019.

Aaron L. Pawlitz, First Vice President

from the general manager The New Year marks a time of new beginnings, and this is especially true in the MAC’s financial world as some of our staff change roles and we brought in a new face in early January. Nearly 23 years ago, in August of 1996, Larry Absheer joined the MAC’s executive staff as Chief Financial Officer. The announcement in the September 1996 Cherry Diamond read, “Absheer, a former Club member … has served as chief financial officer of Sanford Brown College, as well as Senior Executive Vice President of Government, Regulatory and Public Affairs. Prior to joining Sanford-Brown, Absheer was a management consultant with Deloitte & Touche, the international “Big Six” accounting firm.” The article went on to quote Larry. He said, “I believe my knowledge of the Club will ultimately lead to higher quality service to the members because I understand their perspective and will be able to bring their viewpoints to the management team.” Larry has certainly elevated the Club’s level of service. To say that he has made a huge impact is an understatement. I want to take a moment to share with you some of his noteworthy accomplishments that might otherwise go unrecognized. F Banking relationships – Larry took the MAC’s relationship with Jefferson Bank to new levels, which paved the way for numerous financing deals. F Sales tax refund – Larry took advantage of this opportunity when the club industry won this Missouri court decision. The result was a $1.4 million refund for the MAC. Larry also made the decision to hire legal and accounting counsel on a time and materials basis instead of on a contingency basis, and this decision saved the club approximately $250,000. F Community Improvement District – Larry appealed the CID property taxes. When a flaw in the authorizing documents was discovered, he decided to take the issue to court, and the result was a negotiated $80,000 settlement for the MAC.

F Historic status of the Downtown Clubhouse (which enabled the Preservation Foundation to be established) – Larry shepherded the entire eligibility and approval process including working with Landmarks Association, the State of Missouri and the U.S. Department of the Interior. F Developed relationships with numerous local and national political and religious leaders. Through his contacts, people such as Antonin Scalia, Franklin Graham, Ken Starr, Denny Hastert, Cal Thomas, Phyliss Schlafly and many other prominent figures have visited the MAC. F Larry has used his political contacts over the years to lobby government leaders for the benefit of the MAC and the club industry F Great Recession – Larry was at the center of the storm that severely impacted the MAC, its members and employees and became an existential threat. He helped the MAC survive and eventually thrive again. F Presentations to the MAC staff – Over the years, he has counseled and coached many employees, including presentations on relationship building and health and wellness. F Bringing the Wheaton College athletic teams to the MAC – since 1997 various Wheaton teams have stayed at the MAC more than 35 times during their trips to St. Louis. F Bringing catering business to the MAC – Larry’s relationships that have been built in the St. Louis community and beyond have generated countless banquets, meetings and events at the MAC by many different not-for-profit organizations. F In 1997, he co-founded CACFE (City/ Athletic Club Financial Executives), which meets annually and continues today. In addition to all these things, the MAC has also consecutively experienced its two best fiscal years under Larry’s leadership. As Larry nears retirement, we decided that we just couldn’t let this exemplary man leave the MAC so soon. He has agreed to transition to the role of

Director of Advancement. In this role, he will provide special assistance with our Glen Echo partnership (see page 27 for more information) and work closely with Cynthia Goudy on our foundations, specifically planned giving, annuities, wills, and the All-Star program. Soon, you’ll be able to find him and Cynthia “at the foundation of it all” headquartered on the ground floor of the Downtown Clubhouse, now affectionately dubbed the “Foundations Floor.” I am so pleased that my friend and colleague Larry has agreed to stay on with us in this new role, and I thank him for all he has done for me personally here at the MAC. Moving into the Chief Financial Officer’s office and role is Pam Roth. Please join me in extending some heartfelt congratulations to her. She has worked with Larry for almost 20 years and is extremely competent and highly qualified for this position. I am confident that her promotion into this position and ongoing leadership will be a smooth transition for the Club. Thank you, Larry and Pam, for your years of service, dedication to the MAC, and exemplary work. Also, please join me in welcoming Ed Redmond to the MAC family. Ed was hired to fill Pam’s prior position as Director of Accounting. He has more than 15 years of accounting experience, and we’re thrilled to have him. The New Year is off to a great start. The MAC finished 2018 by approving 39 new members and having one of the best months in the Club’s financial history. Thanks to all who proposed new members, hosted a holiday party, and utilized the hotel rooms to help us finish the year strong. I look forward to sharing more exciting news in the year to come. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

MAC HONORS COLLEGE SOCCER’S BEST

Gutman and Macario Awarded Hermann Trophy The best players in college soccer assembled at the MAC for the annual Hermann Trophy Banquet presented by World Wide Technology on Jan. 4. A big crowd filled the Club to find out who would be recognized as the top male and female players in the country for the 2018 season. Indiana University senior defender Andrew Gutman (Hinsdale, Ill.) and Stanford University sophomore forward Catarina Macario (San Diego, Calif.) received the MAC Hermann Trophy — a 10-pound crystal soccer ball trophy — as National Players of the Year based on voting conducted by college coaches. Gutmann contributed career-highs with 11 goals and nine assists for 31 points in 2018, leading the Hoosiers in goals and points. The unanimous Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year anchored an IU defense that allowed just 13 goals over 24 games en route to a College Cup semifinal appearance. Runners-up for the men’s award were University of Denver senior forward Andrew Shinyashiki and University of Kentucky junior forward JJ Williams. Macario recorded a team-high 14 goals and 36 points in 2018 to help the Cardinal back to the College Cup semifinals. The Pac 12 Forward of the Year led the conference in gamewinning goals and finished tied for ninth in the country in total points. As a freshman, she led the nation with 50 points and 16 assists. Runners-up for the women’s award were Stanford senior midfielder Jordan DiBiasi and Georgetown University senior forward Caitlin Farrell. At the banquet, World Wide Technology CEO Jim Kavanaugh gave an update on the bid to land a Major League Soccer franchise for St. Louis. To conclude the event, U.S. Soccer’s CEO/Secretary General, Dan Flynn spoke about the growth of soccer in the United States. 12 F Cherry Diamond F FEB 2019

FIND MOTIVATION

in Adventure MAC member, Christine Hoene has challenged herself to try a new sport every year since 1995.

Do the people you know a favor and tell them to learn a new sport every year. Planning the next activity is almost as fun as doing it.” Christine Hoene grew up during a time when women were not encouraged to play sports. In 1995, at the age of 35, she had little athletic experience and had never picked up a tennis racket when a friend asked her to play at the Missouri Athletic Club. She experienced so much physical, mental and social enjoyment that she decided to dedicate the next year to learning the sport. Since then, Christine has continued to pursue learning a new sport each subsequent year. Throughout the past decade, Christine has sought out sports that create avenues for adventure. For example, she joined “Chicks with Picks” so she would have the opportunity to travel with other women interested in ice climbing. Many of the sports she has pursued involve traveling to a particular location, climate or terrain for learning, training, and competition. She has done hut-to-hut cross country skiing, backcountry ice climbing, surfing vacations, aerial showcases, and in 2016, participated in the Missouri Senior Olympics for pole vaulting. She took home a firstplace title. “My biggest takeaway would have to be the travel,” said Christine. “I try to do something exceptional with each sport.” After trying more than 30 different sports in about 24 years, her motivation remains strong. She loves each part of the process from choosing a sport to learning the fundamentals and then giving it her all in competition against others or while striving to achieve a personal best. To date, her favorite sports include tennis, cross country skiing, mountain biking and aerial silks. She enjoyed the aerial silks so much that she opened her own studio in Florida. She confesses that committing to a full year of one sport 16 F Cherry Diamond F FEB 2019

is the most difficult part. She was least passionate about fencing and had the most difficult time sticking with it. She credits the MAC for helping her succeed in her goals. She first joined the Club about 18 years ago. Through the MAC, she learned how to play tennis and squash. Ongoing, she has utilized the fitness facilities, classes and trainers to increase her strength and stay fit and healthy. She has fond early memories of taking Paul Helfrich’s boot camp class outside on nice days. “It was like CrossFit before that became a thing,” she said. Today, she splits her time between St. Louis and Florida. When in St. Louis, she still enjoys a good workout at the MAC. “The boot camps offered have played a big part in helping me continue with sports,” said Christine. “My core burns with each V-up and run, it’s just great.” With the start of a New Year, she encourages others to join her in trying a new sport. “Do the people you know a favor and tell them to learn a new sport every year. Planning the next activity is almost as fun as doing it,” said Christine. When asked what sport she is planning to tackle in 2019, she confessed that she is still researching it, but is leaning towards dune surfing. With this in mind, members of all ages and skill levels still have time to choose a new sport for 2019. The MAC staff are prepared to help adults and children achieve athletic, fitness and wellness goals. Consider a racquet sport, basketball, golf or swimming. Talk to the athletic pros to determine which sport would be most enjoyable. Share the sport with a fellow member; train together; and compete against each other. As Christine has shown, it is never too late in life to learn a new sport.
