PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

As the clock turns to 2015, we almost need January to recover from all the great festivities in December. I hope everyone had a great holiday season with your family and friends, and I trust Santa brought you everything on your wish list. The MAC was an awesome place to be during the holidays, and the staff did a great job on all the holiday events. I heard a story about one staff member who worked a company Christmas party and was at the Club until 2:30 a.m. She went home to sleep for two hours and returned for Breakfast with Santa by 6:30 a.m. The staff works very hard and is very dedicated. Thanks to all the staff that made the holidays at the MAC great. December had two great events, and I was privileged to be a part of them. The first was the Jack Buck Sports Awards. Charles Glenn was back to kickoff the event with his Blues-themed rendition of When the Saints Come Marching In. T.J. Oshie was honored as Sports Personality of the Year. Stan Musial’s grandson, Brian Schwarze brought in a harmonica trio to introduce Jim Edmonds as the winner of the Stan “The Man” Award. Congrats to all the honorees and a special thanks to MAC member Tom Ackerman, who once again did a great job hosting the event. The second event was the Past Presidents’ Reunion Dinner. We were fortunate to have 27 past Presidents there spanning from Don Gunn (1975-1976) through our most recent Past President John Bugh (2013-2014). This group has greatly influenced the success of the Club throughout the years, and I thank each of them for their passion and leadership at the MAC. As we look forward into 2015, the MAC has some great opportunities to make the New Year one of change and new opportunities. Consider the following: F Lose weight: Weight loss is the number one New Year’s resolution. Register online for the MAC Weight Loss Challenge by January 5. The cost is $135 per person and includes a body 4 F Cherry Diamond F JANUARY 2015

fat consultation, one-hour nutrition consultation with the MAC’s registered dietitian, weekly weigh-ins, 10% discount on personal training, nutrition session, and massage therapy during challenge, and opportunities to win prizes. F Reduce stress: The MAC is offering a reduced rate for a one-hour massage therapy session to new clients. Get a one-hour session for the price of a 30-minute session! Also, get three aqua detox sessions for just $89.00. F Try a new sport or hobby: The MAC is offering a new pickleball clinic in January, and a common interest group, The Yarn Club, is going to offer knitting and crocheting classes this year. F Spend more social time at the Club: Experience the camaraderie of Good Fellowship Day, a fun and free event for all, hosted by the Athletic Department on Feb. 21. F Bring a new member: Save $100 off your membership dues by becoming a Platinum Partner and recruit a new member. I also want to mention two great events coming up in early 2015. The first is the Herman Trophy Awards Dinner. This is the premier award in college soccer and a great night to showcase the MAC. If you haven’t already, make reservations to join us. Thanks to Governor Beekman and his wife Annie for making this a great event every year. The other event I encourage everyone to attend is the Foundations’ Gala. Make this Valentine’s Day special for your sweetheart by attending in support of the MAC’s Foundations. You should have received a letter in early December with information about this event. I look forward to seeing you there. Lastly, on the business side, the first quarter of the fiscal year is in the books, and I am happy to report we are off to a good start. Some contributing factors are strong membership revenues. The food and beverage figures are outperforming projections, hotel revenues are continuing to be solid and expenses are being kept in line. This is all equating to solid cash flow for the Club. Thanks to everyone involved and I look forward to a strong second quarter and beyond. Here’s to a fruitful 2015 for each of you, and thanks for being a fellow member at the Club. I look forward to seeing you soon!

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

On behalf of the MAC staff, I want to begin by thanking the membership for your contributions to the Employee Holiday Fund. I wish you all could have been present to experience the appreciation and gratitude when the staff received their checks. The room was “merry and bright,” full of smiling faces, laughter, and many photos with Santa. Another group who is very thankful for your donations is the Mathew-Dickey Boys’ and Girls’ Club.

»

Thank you to everyone who donated youth toys and sports equipment. Many excited and happy children received those gifts on Dec. 23. These past few weeks truly were “the most wonderful time of the year,” and your contributions made that possible. Thank you for helping us end the year on a high note. The New Year is often the time for reflection on the past and for making changes in an effort to foster a more positive future. Looking back, about 15 years ago, the Missouri Athletic Club was one of the first private clubs to launch a website. Even though the website had minimal functionality, this was a cutting-edge decision for our industry at the time. This decision has continued to evolve. Since then, the MAC’s website has been redesigned twice to improve functionality, user interface, and user experience. Moving into 2015, we recognize the need to continuously evolve to provide the premier experience for our members, and another necessary website redesign will be in the works throughout the next few months. The MAC’s website

platform and email marketing software will move from Jonas/ClubbroadCast to Clubessential, which is the Cadillac platform used by many prestigious clubs throughout the country. From a membership perspective, the new website should be easier to navigate, find key information, and provide more functionality such as online registration for athletics and events. Via email, you should receive more information that pertains to your specific interests. Additionally, an online directory will make outreach and networking with fellow members easier. Behind the scenes, the website redesign is part of a larger strategy, which will leverage content for social media engagement and communication. Ultimately, the goal is, as always, to fill the membership, catering, and rooms’ buckets, which we have had great success with thus far. Over the long-term, the new website will provide reporting tools that make us smarter about you and how best to provide value and a great member experiences. These are incredibly exciting changes, and I look forward to sharing more details with you as this project moves forward. I am also excited to announce that the Missouri Athletic Club reaffirmed its status as a Platinum Club of America, which means we rank among the top three percent of private athletic clubs in the United States. Share this good news with a close relative, friend, or co-worker and find out if they are interested in becoming your Platinum Partner. This year, look for the re-introduction of the Platinum Partner membership category, which, in addition to receiving $100 off monthly membership dues, will include added “perks” yet to be finalized. Start scouting for your Platinum Partner now. Plan to use the Club with a guest one more time per month and have a wonderful, new, healthy, happy, prosperous year. See you at the Club,

PRESERVATION FOUNDATION CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN

»

The mission of the MAC Preservation Foundation is to preserve, rejuvenate and memorialize the history and historical architecture of the building occupied by the Missouri Athletic Club at 405 Washington.

The Missouri Athletic Club’s Preservation Foundation was formed in 2007 with a goal of raising $5,000,000 to renovate the infrastructure of our downtown historic clubhouse in addition to making it a safer building for our members to enjoy. Many are aware of the history of the building, which was rebuilt in 1915 after a tragic fire destroyed the original clubhouse on March 8, 1914. The “new” building opened on March 1, 1916 with later additions in 1927 and 1950. The certified historic designation is certainly deserved for the building designed by famed architect William B. Ittner. Our building at 405 Washington Avenue is a cornerstone building and business in downtown St. Louis. The MAC is believed to be the oldest organization operating continuously in the same location in downtown St. Louis. This is a tremendous accomplishment, but with this comes a great deal of responsibility and challenges. The building is feeling its age of nearly 100 years even if it does not show it. The fine staff at

the Club performs near miracles to keep the building operating seamlessly for members and guests. The beauty of the Club is on display for all that enter through its doors. The resources needed to maintain the building including its operation, elegance and safety requires a significant amount of money. The Preservation Foundation has provided nearly $500,000 in grants to the Club for projects qualifying for its preservation under the federal guidelines for historic renovations. Members and guests do not always see these projects, but they are certainly felt by them. The completed projects include: roof replacement, lining of roof drains, installation of chiller with control panel, repairs to north wall and light well, emergency exits, and lighting and repairs to the Fourth Street fire escape. A variety of other smaller projects have kept services uninterrupted and protected the building from deterioration. The above projects were accomplished due to the initial fundraising efforts of the Preservation Foundation led by Don Gunn, Gerry Ortbals and Kim Tucci. The “Brick” campaign and other donations through 2014 raised approximately $750,000. The Foundation also receives the net proceeds from the annual golf tournament chaired by Scott Engelbrecht. The golf tournament rose

in excess of $300,000 through 2014. The Foundation is working with the Board of Governors and the management of the Club to address current needs to preserve the downtown building. The current needs include repair or replacement of plumbing stacks supporting the overnight guest rooms, phase two and three of the fire egress life safety plan, additional emergency lighting, fire safety separation walls, emergency exits and other longer term projects. The needs of a 100-year-old building are voluminous, and the newly reconstituted Preservation Foundation Board is investigating a variety of methods to raise the funds to preserve our landmark building. We hope to provide additional information beginning with The Foundations Gala on Feb. 13, 2015. If you would like to learn more about the Foundation or contribute, please feel free to contact any of the members of the Foundation Board, which includes John Bugh, Rick Lodewyck, Bob Frederic, Bob Guller, Scott Highmark, Steve Smith and Jim Woodcock. Respectfully submitted,

Steve Krause, Preservation Foundation Chairman

String Kings Meet the MAC’s

Other than their outstanding ability to swing a racquet, David Schwent, Kenny Powell and Adam Bews are known around the Missouri Athletic Club for making great improvements to the junior racquetball, tennis, and squash programs. 10 F Cherry Diamond F JANUARY 2015

dave schwent, adam bews, and kenny powell discuss the mac’s growing junior racquetball, squash, and tennis programs.

Throughout the past four years, Dave Schwent took a nonexistent junior racquetball program to one comprised of 22 local schools and more than 500 children, and he is still exploring new opportunities for growth. Just last year, he introduced a program targeted at children in middle school with the goal of helping them learn the sport before it is offered in high school. The first day the program was offered 106 children registered for it. Dave attributes the majority of the success to relationship development. He makes a special effort to know the adults, parents and children he coaches on a personal level and treat everyone as an individual. He has a self-proclaimed love for candy and movies, which helps him relate to the children. He also tries to incorporate opportunities for networking and socializing into his programs. For example, on Tuesday nights, the singles league starts at 7 p.m. followed by doubles for fun, afterwards the players mingle — Dave Schwent, in the bar of the Stan Musial Grille and Head Racquetball Professional enjoy a $10 sandwich bar and drinks. “It’s been really fun for me to get to know our members, and I like creating opportunities for them to get to know each other better,” said Dave. Kenny Powell, Director of Junior Tennis, also believes that the best way to build a youth program is for the kids to enjoy themselves. “It’s even more important than winning,” he says. Two years ago, his growth strategy for the junior tennis program was comprised of three main objectives: providing the best facilities, the best professionals, and the best programs to ultimately become the best junior tennis program in the region. First, he addressed the tennis courts. While they were already first class courts in a great location, they needed to be resurfaced,

“I love people. I love kids. I have the best job in the world.”

“At the end of the day, I’m still smiling; I’m still excited when I get home, and I tell my wife that the clinics were awesome and the kids are improving in skill and character. It’s rewarding to be part of that.” — Kenny Powell, Director of Junior Tennis which happened throughout the summer of 2014. Then, he made a great team even stronger by doubling it with some of the most qualified professionals in the area, and he ensured everyone became either USPTA or USPTR certified to provide exceptional instruction. Lastly, he developed a program for tots (age 5) to those at a “peak performance” level (college or professional), and two tracks: a high performance track and a varsity track. The high performance track is for individuals who want to play competitively in tournaments. The varsity track level is for those who prefer to play recreationally throughout their lifetime. As a result of focusing on improvements in these areas, enrollment in the junior tennis program has tripled throughout the past two years. Kenny’s programs teach more than just lifelong tennis skills, but also life lessons that build character. “If a ball is out, they should call it out. And if it is in, they should call it in. Cheaters don’t win, and winners don’t cheat,” said Kenny. He teaches the children how to win humbly, lose gracefully, and overcome adversity by trying again. He is also proud of the priority placed on education, “School comes first. Strive for a college scholarship.” Looking towards the future, Kenny hopes there will be an opportunity to further motivate and educate the junior tennis players by taking them to watch a professional tennis tournament so they can see the best of the best in action. Similarly, Adam Bews would also like to take some junior squash players to a national tournament, but he would like them to play in the tournament. Unlike racquetball, which is a very popular sport in the Midwest, squash is much more popular on the east coast where juniors apply their talents towards acceptance into colleges. “I would like our kids to experience playing against really strong squash players so they can better understand what it takes and improve their skills and rankings,” said Adam. According to Adam, squash is the fastest growing sport in the United States. Adam joined the Missouri Athletic Club as Director of Squash in September with the goal of developing a program to attract junior players. Prior to Adam coming onboard, the Club only offered private lessons to a few individuals. Now, the junior squash program offers six clinics each week and more than 25 private lessons. Eventually, he wants to offer two clinics per day totaling about 10 – 12 clinics per week. He also plans to develop an elite program that incorporates fitness training with some of the MAC’s personal trainers. In the short term, he has a couple tournaments planned for early in the year, and he’s looking for participants.

“I’m thrilled about the growth we’ve already seen, and I’m excited about upcoming opportunities to showcase our program.”

Junior Tennis Nationals Carl Walker, Missouri Athletic Club’s newest tennis pro comes from a strong tennis coaching background. To become a good tennis instructor, Carl attended the Tennis Tech Program in Tyler, Texas for two years where he honed his tennis teaching skills. When he returned to St. Louis, he taught tennis at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. There he became the Director of the National Junior Tennis League (NJTL). He also served on the National Board of the NJTL and was a speaker at the national convention in New York City. Besides teaching at Dwight Davis for 18 years, Carl also taught at Creve Coeur Racquet Club, Bally’s, Vetta-Concord, and Webster Recreation Center. Carl’s strength in teaching is his calmness, his unlimited patience, and, as he would put it, his ability to “focus on the technical side of things.” With these strengths, he has coached junior players who have won high school state titles, and during the past two summers, he coached the Junior Team Tennis (JTT) teams that won the St. Louis District Championships. This summer, along with three juniors who now participate in the Missouri Athletic Club’s junior tennis program, Team Walker (Carl’s 14 & under JTT team) was undefeated in St. Louis, crowned the Sectional Champions in a five state area, and competed in the National JTT Championships where they placed 12 out of 16 teams nationwide! This is a great accomplishment. Students from the MAC who made the trip to South Carolina for Nationals are Ella Kinder, Lilly Montano, and Steven Shaw. As they all shared with Carl, the team tennis and trip to nationals was one of the greatest experiences of their lives and one they will always remember.

New Year, New You:

Start the New Year Cleansed & Relaxed

The holidays are often filled with stress and consuming less-than-healthy food and drink. Giving up alcohol in January is becoming a common practice of detoxification. Another way to consider cleansing your body and starting fresh in the New Year is Aqua Detox. While your feet soak in water, ions attract toxins, which are released from the body through osmosis. This cleanses the body of many heavy metals and other toxins that have built up. New Year Specials: Three Aqua Detox sessions for $89.00 Another way to reduce stress is through massage therapy. New MAC massage therapy clients will receive their first 60-minute massage for the price of a 30-minute massage

Fitness Highlight: Water Aerobics Did you know that water aerobics is a great low-impact, maximum resistance, cardio workout? Try it for the first time with Rob Scheer on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8:15 a.m. at the Downtown Clubhouse.

Save the Date good fellowship day February 21, 2015

Members have been gathering since the 1930s for Good Fellowship Day. Join the tradition of great fitness classes, activities, and competitions followed by a delicious buffet and plenty of cold beer. Second only to the camaraderie, the best part is that it’s all complimentary! This is a great opportunity for new members to network. All are encouraged to participate regardless of current fitness level. No reservations are required. Contact Rick Schneider at 314-539-4434 with any questions. Cherry Diamond F JANUARY 2015 F 17

Did you know that January 25-31 is National School Choice Week? Selecting the best school for your child is an important decision. It’s so important that since 2011 an entire week throughout the month of January is dedicated to this topic nationwide. Mark your calendar because Jan. 25-31 is National School Choice Week. More than 90 events will take place throughout the state of Missouri. The purpose of this week is to shine a positive spotlight on the need for effective education options for all children. Sometimes the options can be overwhelming. In St. Louis, outside of the public school system, education options include 21 charter schools and more than 400 private schools (both parochial and secular). With all of these options, there are many factors to consider including location, tuition cost, test scores and academic performance, philosophy, faculty, extracurricular activities, facilities, class size, admission requirements, and college placement. This often leaves many parents wondering where to begin. To help simplify the process, here are some simple recommendations:

Forsyth School 6235 Wydown Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63105 314.726.4542 ForsythOnline.com Admission@Forsyth Online.com Where can you map the world by memory, perform in a Shakespeare play, and rappel off a 50-foot cliff all in sixth grade? With a strong academic foundation that includes the visual and performing arts, sports, and challenge education, Forsyth graduates are well prepared for selective secondary schools. Forsyth has a commitment to diversity, summer programs, a comprehensive extended day program with after-school classes and year-round league sports, and a supportive tuition assistance program. Visit with Forsyth’s Early Childhood Teachers What happens during the school day for Forsyth’s youngest students – the 3- and 4-year-olds? Early Childhood Open House: Sat, Jan. 10 | 10:00-11:30 a.m.

1. Prioritize the Most Important Criteria for Your Child and Family Start by making a list, but be open to revising it as more information becomes available. Consider any special learning needs for your child. Will they perform better in a structured versus unstructured environment? What is a necessity at the school versus what can be supplemented outside of it? Once the top priorities have been identified, move on to the next step. Points to consider: F Teaching and religious philosophy F Available services such as an onsite nurse, librarian, guidance counselor F Grading and disciplinary policies F Faculty qualifications F Parent programs and involvement F College credit F Financial aid

Choosing the School that Fits Your Family (continued from page 19 ) 2. Research the Schools Peruse the school’s website and take notes, but also make time to visit the schools that meet (or exceed) the criteria on your list. Getting a feel for the atmosphere and culture of the school is just as important as understanding it’s offerings. Before visiting the school, prepare questions for faculty, students and their parents. Here are a few examples:

F What is the application process? F In the past few years, have test scores risen or declined? Why? F Are students allowed to leave the school by themselves? F What measures been taken to ensure student safety and security? F Are there tryouts for extracur- ricular activities? How many students can participate?

Breakfast

Santa with

Throughout two weekends in December, more than 650 people attended the MAC’s annual Breakfast with Santa event. Prior to Santa and Mrs. Claus’ grand entrance into the Missouri Room, families enjoyed a variety of entertainment and a delicious breakfast buffet. Upon arrival, children received holiday gift bags filled with toys. Then, coloring books and crayons were available at each table for the children to enjoy while downing chocolate milk from the specialty children’s buffet. The Apollos and a pianist from Siberia set the tone for the event with fantastic holiday music. While waiting for an opportunity to tell Santa their Christmas wish, children could build gingerbread houses, get their face painted, or experience the magic of the season as a magician performed entertaining tricks. Photos with Santa were available for purchase. Overall, the event successfully put everyone who attended in the holiday spirit. Photos courtesy of Gilded Light Photography, LLC

2015 CSC Charities Selected At the November Board of Governors meeting, the Missouri Athletic Club’s Charitable Society for Children presented its recommendations for the 2015 charities. Twenty-seven charities were initially nominated, and 11 finalists presented to the CSC Selection Committee in early November. The recommendation to the Board was based on the rank order of the 11 charities that presented to the Selection Committee. The Board of Governors selected the following charities for support by the MAC Members/Employees for 2015: F Coat-A-Kid nominated by MAC Member Maureen Riffle F The Maren Fund nominated by MAC Member Keith P. (Kip) Williams F Sweet Babies nominated by MAC Member James Sheets This is one of the ways the MAC gives back to our community. Since the CSC’s conception 10 years ago, it has supported 30 charities with approximately $200,000 in contributions. 2014 total contributions are still being tallied. About the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children The MAC Charitable Society for Children’s mission is to provide financial assistance to local St. Louis children’s charities and to give back time and resources to the community. This is achieved by selecting three beneficiaries to financially support and offer the use of the Club on an annual basis. Members and employees of the MAC nominate the charities. The nominations are presented to the Board of Governors who selects the three beneficiaries for the year. In January of the following year, 100 percent of the donations are divided equally among the three deserving organizations. The Charitable Society for Children has no expenses; Jim Dankenbring, David Weiss, volunteer everything is funded through DarylThe Gourley effort. membership to also donate to the three beneficiaries of the CSC. Throughout the month of October, employees donate portions of their paychecks to the charities. Coat-a-Kid, Inc. Since 2001, Coat-A-Kid has provided new coats, hats, and gloves free of charge to St. Louis area kids in need. Coat-A-Kid knows that a coat can be the difference between a child that attends school, and one who will not venture out in the cold to attend school. They believe that education is the way to break out of the poverty cycle and that school attendance is the key. For more information, visit www. coatakid.org. The Maren Fund The Maren Fund, Inc. seeks to positively impact the lives of children with disabilities through education with programs such as The Learning Program of St. Louis, which is designed

Sweet Babies Sweet Babies is a newly established nonprofit organization that provides families with newborns clothing and other items of necessity hoping to keep them warm, comfortable and safe when they leave the hospital. The organization has several programs including the Bag Program, which provides clothing and items of necessity to use throughout the first year of a baby’s life. Additional programs include the Pack ‘n Play Program, the Clinic Incentive Program, and the Umbrella Stroller Program. The funds received from the MAC Charitable Society for Children will help Sweet Babies continue to accomplish the goal of providing many families in need with some basic necessities for their new baby, and upon leaving the hospital, give parents hope and knowledge that people care. Sweet Babies has the potential to help more than 1,000 families per calendar year through one hospital. For more information, contact Sam Hopmeier, Chairman of the CSC at 314-434-5266 or hopmeier@aol.com.

What Others are Saying Dorothy Santner is a freelance photographer. She was born in Chicago, and at the age of ten, her family moved to South St. Louis. She later attended high school at St. Elizabeth’s Academy. Dorothy’s interest in photography began when she enrolled in a photography course at Florissant Valley Community College in the early 1970s. She learned basic photography skills, lighting, film and photo development. She eventually built a dark room in the basement of her house. There she experimented with various photographic techniques and exposure processes. Currently, Dorothy enjoys taking pictures of landscapes, flowers, nature, historical buildings, and sculptures. Her favorite places to take photos include the Missouri Botanical Garden and Forest Park venues. Her photographs can be found in calendars and hanging in various business offices. Dorothy also enjoys playing bridge, and her photographs were recently displayed at the Bridge Center on Olive Road.
