PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

Happy New Year!! Thank you to all of our members, management and staff for a wonderful 2015. I hope you had the opportunity to share part of your holidays with us at the MAC. I don’t know how it was possible for our MAC train crew, spearheaded by John Salter, to top themselves from last year, but they somehow did. For those of you who witnessed this year’s display – simply amazing. There is so much to celebrate at the Missouri Athletic Club, sometimes I am not sure where to begin. Mike Matheny was here last month, as we honored him with the MAC’s Sports Personality of the Year award. Wow, is all I can really say. I also had the pleasure of gathering with our Past Governors and Past Presidents during the last six weeks to provide updates on the club and offer thanks for their years of service and commitment to making the MAC one of the finest clubs in America. The finest collegiate soccer players in the country will gather at the MAC on Jan. 8 as we honor this year’s Hermann Trophy award winners. In a few months, we’ll recognize some of St. Louis’s most fascinating and accomplished women at the 2016 Women of Distinction luncheon. We continue to accept nominations, and I encourage you to both consider a submittal and attend what has become one of our more prestigious events. Please see page 29 for further details. The months ahead will produce a new slate of candidates for our 2016 Class of Board of Governors. Serving as a Governor has always represented an unparalleled personal passion and commitment to preserving the excellence of the MAC. If this is something you feel inspired to do, or know a fellow member who you believe represents such, we are currently accepting nominations. Please see page 9 for further details. 4 F Cherry Diamond F JANUARY 2016

Next month, we’ll gather for our annual Foundation’s Gala – easily the best party of the year. Please make your reservations now for Feb. 13. This year’s event will take a slightly different tone – one of more awareness and recognition to the MAC’s foundations and a thank you to all for their continued support. The Missouri Athletic Club’s foundations – Preservation Foundation, Sports Foundation and Foundation for the Arts – represent a vital component to the long-term health and success of your club. We are blessed with a rich and storied tradition, one that dates back more than a century for multi-generations. Our commitment to the foundations will help ensure this tradition for generations to come. The MAC has long been a landing spot for St. Louis weddings. Recently, we had the pleasure to serve as host for one of our finest members, Tom Hilton, and the celebration of his daughter’s wedding. Having celebrated both of his daughters’ weddings at the MAC, Mr. Hilton shared, “There is no finer room in St. Louis for such an event than the MAC’s Missouri Room.” The MAC’s Preservation Foundation helps preserve that kind of experience. The members of the MAC have been blessed with a collective abundance of resources – people, time, dollars and a desire to make a difference. This serves as a catalyst to the Sports Foundation and its mission. The Sports Foundation has stepped up time and again to help make a difference in our community – from the Special Olympics to Mathews-Dickey Boys’ and Girls’ Club – with a continued effort on potential scholarship endowment. The Foundation for the Arts was formed to help assemble, collect, commission, display and maintain the club’s blossoming collection of artwork. With a membership that is endeared to some of the finest art in St. Louis, this foundation presents a tremendous opportunity for growth within the MAC. The MAC foundations are becoming a part of daily culture and an undeniable ingredient to our future. I will certainly be a part of it, and I hope you will too. See you around the Club,

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

Dear Members: As I’m drafting this column, the sounds of holiday tunes are wafting through my office, and I’m reminded that for many this really is the most wonderful time of the year. I wish you all could’ve been present to see the smiles on our employees’ faces when they received their holiday bonus checks. Similarly, many MAC employees have told me that they wish they could thank the members personally for your contribution to the Employee Holiday Fund. On behalf of the nearly 350 individuals employed by the club, I want to extend a sincere “thank you” for your contribution. It makes such an impact. Did you know that the approximately 2,400 contributions from our members equates to about $190,000 given to the Employee Holiday Fund? When divided, that’s a $900 holiday bonus for our full time employees. This goes to those smiling faces you see while using the club and to the dish washers, floor cleaners, and the rest of the back-of-the-house staff who ensure you have a platinum club experience every time. The holiday bonus is so appreciated and impactful on the lives of our folks so thank you, thanks you, thank you. Additionally, approximately $5,500 was given to each one of our foundations, which helps the club in so many ways. Speaking of the foundations, I hope you’ve saved the date for the Foundations’ Gala on Feb. 13! There

will be detailed info coming your way so be on the lookout. Also, if you haven’t already, reserve your seat at the Hermann Trophy banquet on Jan. 8 and the annual Boxing Championship on Feb. 25. Not only are these historically fun events, but they’re great opportunities to bring a guest and show-off your club. My hat is off to our amazing catering team who worked so hard on all of our holiday parties and events at the club this season. Members and guests were wowed by the holiday spirit, our trains, decorations, wonderful food and service as well as Santa himself. The great news is that many folks have already re-booked their events for next year so let me strongly suggest that you get your party on our books now. We really, really appreciate our members hosting their parties at the club; thank you. Please call Najah Fennoy at 314-539-4448 about booking an event or a meeting at the club in 2016. Bringing guests (co-workers, friends, family members) to the club is key for two reasons. First, it introduces prospective members to the club and gives them a feel for what we’re all about. If you know someone interested in joining, it’s not too late to establish a Platinum Partnership and waive your 1903 assessment fee. 40 members are taking advantage of this to-date! Secondly, consider this, if every member brought a guest to lunch at the club one extra time per month that would add $857,808 in revenue annually. Amazing! I’ve proposed this as a challenge before, but since it’s time for New Year’s resolutions, I encourage you to make this a priority in 2016. One more lunch with one guest once per month in 2016 — that’s it! Having touched on our catering and membership buckets, I would be remiss to neglect mentioning our hotel rooms. Another 11 rooms are under renovation, and we expect them to be available for use in February. Please invite your business travelers and out-of-town

guests to make use of our awesome rooms. See page 14 for detailed information about all of the amenities available to overnight guests. And, of course, construction continues to progress on the 1903 bar and patio. For this project, we’re making use of video to deliver fun updates and having a ball doing them. Also, you can login to our new website and watch a live video feed of the construction in real time. How cool is that? And, when 1903 is completed, this footage will be used to create a time-lapse video just for fun and, of course, our records. Right now there is a hilarious video update straight from Santa on our new member homepage that you have to check out. I feel like Harvey Korman trying to keep a straight face with Tim Conway (Santa) going into a rant. I laugh every time I watch it. I want to wrap up here with a special thanks to Jim Wilson, Amy Freeman, and Emma Frey in our Communications Department and to Rick Garrett and Nick Pardo on our IT team for setting up the live feed and making all this fun stuff happen. A plethora of videos are available on the MAC’s YouTube channel for your viewing pleasure with more to come as the year progresses! These folks also deserve a big thanks for launching our new website and mobile app in 2015. There are more updates in the works so plug-in if you haven’t already. With such a great finish to 2015, I’m confident that 2016 will be another fantastic year for the Missouri Athletic Club. This club has so much to offer. Make the most of it, and show your club off this year. See you at the club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club Cherry Diamond F JANUARY 2016 F 5

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

»

Member Spotlight: Bill Bouchein and Jarid King The Cherry Diamond met with Bill Bouchein and his son-in-law, Jarid King, for a discussion on what the club means to these two active members. CD: How long have you been a member of the MAC? BB: I became a member 58 years ago when Hoard Hardin Sr., the caption of the MAC All-Star Volleyball Team, asked me to join as a ball settler. JK: I have been a member for nine years. CD: Have you held any events at the club? If so, why did you choose the MAC? BB: My company, fraternity and family have held more than 30 terrific events at the club ranging from 35 to 350 guests. The exceptional atmosphere, food and staff made each event both special and successful. JK: My wife and I held our rehearsal dinner in the Art Lounge. We chose the MAC because the staff and the atmosphere are top-notch. CD: How have you utilized the club since joining? BB: When our children were still in school, our family was seen at the downtown brunch almost every Sunday. Through the years, my wife Sandy and I have enjoyed dances, family events, the Jack Buck Awards, Apollos’ events, Breakfast at Wimbledon and Charitable Society for Children events. But, most importantly, are the family dinners we have shared with our children and grandchildren. JK: I use the Sportsman’s Club frequently for business lunches. I also enjoy playing basketball and play in many of the leagues. My wife uses the West Clubhouse with the kids, and the childcare center is very nice since we have three young children. My oldest daughter and son are on the MAC swim team with my younger daughter looking to follow in their footsteps. We also enjoy many of the annual events with friends and family such as Christmas, Easter and the Fourth of July.

Bill Bouchein (center) and his wife, Sandra, along with son-in-law Jarid King (left), his wife Sarah and their three children Juliana, William and Mary Elizabeth, and son Bart (right) AND his wife Nikki with their children Chase, Belle, Alex and Hunter.

CD: Have you joined any Clubs Within the Club? If so, which ones? If not, do you plan on joining any? BB: Although I haven’t joined any CWCs, I was elected to the Board of Governors in 1974. JK: I am a member of the Charitable Society for Children. It is awesome to see the generosity of other MAC members and the impact we are having on children in the St. Louis area. Sam Hopmeier and the rest of the members of the CSC are a great group of individuals with some of the biggest hearts I know. This is a fun and rewarding CWC and I am proud to be a part of it. CD: Have you brought any new members to the club? What advice would you give to fellow members in their recruitment efforts? BB: I introduced my daughter, Sarah, her husband, Jarid and their three children Juliana, William and Mary Elizabeth to the club. In addition, our son, Bart, his wife, Nikki, and their four children Chase, Belle, Alex and Hunter are becoming a part of the club as we speak. I vouch for always sharing the great benefits of this club with potential members! JK: Yes, I have. The MAC offers many different ways for individuals and families to get involved. The best way I find to have people interested in joining the MAC is just inviting them to events as guests. Once they see all the MAC has to offer, they soon realize it is something special.

Now Accepting Nominations for the 2016 Board of Governors The Missouri Athletic Club Nominating Committee is currently seeking ten qualified candidates to run for the 2016 Board of Governors. Serving on the Board is an honor and provides a rewarding opportunity to give back to the club while connecting with fellow members and club management. Letters of intent are due on or before March 1 and nomination packets complete with a photo and biography are due no later than 5 p.m. on March 7. After

receiving all applications, the Nominating Committee will narrow their field of candidates down to ten. The club election takes place on May 5, 2016, and the top five candidates (as voted on by the membership) will serve a three-year term on the board. If you are interested in serving your club, call John Bugh at 314-724-1620 or Dean Eggerding at 314-5177888 to discuss the rewarding benefits and what being on the Board of Governors is all about.

Sing, Dance, Socialize:

Get Involved with a CWC this Year The new year is a perfect time to try something new! Join a Club Within the Club at the MAC and connect with members who share similar interests. Read below for highlights on three CWCs that give fresh meaning to fun and fellowship.

Have a Swingin’ Good Time with the Dance Club! Dr. Scott and Jane Molden, members of the Dance Club since its inception in 2000, share their love of the group while encouraging other MAC members to waltz in. CD: How long have you been dancing with the Dance Club? SM & JM: We have been members of the Dance Club ever since its inception that started with Jim Sheets. We got involved when one of our daughters got married, but the reason we kept coming was because of the excellent instructors and the great social aspect of the group. The people here are so fun! CD: For someone who may not know about the Dance Club, describe what the group does and any activities that members do together. JM: In addition to participating in the dance lessons, we also join in extra outings that the Dance Club sponsors. For instance, sometimes the club sponsors a dinner followed by a trip to the Casa Loma Ballroom. CD: What interested you in joining the Dance Club? SM: We dated in college and went to a small school. The only thing you could do on the weekends was dance the Jitterbug. So dancing has been a huge part of our lives. Once we found out about all the other kinds of dancing available, we wanted to become involved. JM: It’s definitely the social aspect of the group that intrigued me as well as wanting to improve my dancing!

above: The apollos in concert. Kari R. Frey, FREYtography

10 F Cherry Diamond F JANUARY 2016

CD: How has being a part of the Dance Club enriched your membership at the MAC? SM: You get to socialize with a different set of people! Each CWC is a unique experience and opportunity. JM: As I’ve gotten involved in different groups, I’ve met people I haven’t seen before at the club. Plus, it’s a chance to learn something new while having fun at the same time. CD: Why should couples join the Dance Club? What are the benefits of joining? SM: You burn calories, meet great people and learn something new while having fun! What else could you ask for? For more information on joining the Dance Club, contact Jim Sheets at 314-353-8000 or jim@jimcopromo.com

Hit a High Note and Join the Apollos! Past governor and Apollos’ president Kim DeMotte shares his experiences with the historic MAC group while rallying other members to come on board. CD: How long have you been a member of the Apollos? KD: I have been a part of the Apollos for 10 years. I joined two years after I founded the Toastmasters group. CD: For someone who may not know about the Apollos, describe the group and what kinds of activities you do together. KD: The Apollos, which is the oldest male chorus west of the Mississippi River as well as the longest-established CWC at the MAC, was founded in 1943. We hold two shows a year at the club as well as engage in community service outings such as singing at nursing

homes. After our Monday night rehearsals, we usually share drinks in the Jack Buck Grille and enjoy fellowship with one another. Moving forward, we hope to sing at sporting events and perhaps at naturalization ceremonies. Also, in the next year, I hope to start a show chorus that will focus on performing outside the club, around the city and at sporting events such as ball games at Busch Stadium. We will hold open auditions for this on Monday, Jan. 4. If you are interested, please contact me at kim@ix.netcom.com. CD: How has being a part of the Apollos enriched your MAC membership? KD: Being a part of the Apollos is where I get my MAC cultural fix. We share some of the greatest times together. A great deal of my adhesion to the MAC started with the Apollos. Great social time and camaraderie are big benefits to joining. It is like a mini vacation on Monday nights! CD: Why should gentleman at the MAC join the Apollos? KD: I think that there are people here that are more a fit for the Apollos than they think. I encourage those members who love singing to give us a try; share a beer with us after rehearsal. You’ll never know if you never give it a shot. For more information about joining the Apollos, contact Kim DeMotte at 314-265-5649 or kim@ix.netcom.com

Sip and Savor: Connect with the Mark Twain Society! Ben Brown tells his story about becoming a member of the Mark Twain Society and why other young members should follow suit. CD: How long have you been a member of the Mark Twain Society? BB: I’ve been a member of the MTS for the past two years. CD: For someone who may not know about the MTS, describe the group and its activities. BB: I’ve had a great time while being a member of this society. One of the most memorable events I participated in was when a Jamieson brand ambassador visited from Dublin and talked about the distilling process of the Irish whiskey. Good food is always included in MTS events as well as engaging fellowship. It’s a great way to meet new members and introduce potential members to the club. It makes for a great night out.

I’ve been able to bring family members to a few events so adding that family aspect to it has really elevated the experience. Plus, just meeting new people at these events adds fun and fellowship.

Military History Club Hosts speaker luncheons on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the Downtown Veterans Room.

CD: Why should MAC members join the MTS? What benefits are there in joining? BB: It’s a really fun club and certainly one that younger members should take advantage of. It’s a great social experience. There are a lot of benefits to joining such as receiving gift certificates for cigars, a leather-bound notebook, free cigars at MTS events as well as great food and a raffle at each event for brand swag. It’s really a unique experience.

From Engagement Season to Wedding Planning: Where to Start? For many, as soon as the holiday season comes to an end and the sleigh bells stop ringing, the wedding bells begin to chime. The exact percentage varies depending on the source, but the general consensus is that the majority of engagements happen between Thanksgiving and Valentines Day. For those who got engaged this past holiday season and are now in wedding planning mode, first, congratulations! Secondly, here’s a little advice from the wedding planning experts at the Missouri Athletic Club:

Book vendors and venue early! You don’t need to do any detail planning that far out, but should get your contracts signed. The week after Christmas is traditionally our busiest week for wedding calls. — Linda Soncasie, Director of Catering It helps to be flexible on dates when selecting a venue, which should be done first. Then begin choosing vendors. — Terri Lee, Catering Sales Manager Contact Linda Soncasie, Director of Catering, for more information at lsoncasie@mac-stl.org or 314-539-4424.

Do Business Better in 2016: Plan a Successful Meeting At the start of a New Year, many often reflect on the past year and are motivated to make positive changes in the coming the year – both personally and professionally. For businesses and organizations looking to prompt fresh ideas and motivate key employees in new ways this year, consider the three “S”s: Scenery Host a meeting with key staff outside of the office. Sometimes a change in environment has to come before a change in thinking to get a fresh perspective or set a new tone for communication. What unique characteristics of your business or team must be addressed to make the meeting successful? Communicate goals in advance with the prospective venue so they’re prepared to help maximize the meeting potential.

The rich-wood finishes and historic ambiance at the Downtown Clubhouse emanate character, which is often lacking in the modern office environment or conference room. By escaping the rows of cubes or workstations, business professionals can talk freely and hold private sessions in the MAC’s many breakout rooms or gather in a large group. With more than 20 meeting rooms, the MAC can accommodate groups of various sizes with unique needs. Additionally, the MAC’s experienced catering staff offers tailored menus presented by personal servers to best accommodate the needs of the organization.

In addition to the groups who meet weekly or monthly at the Missouri Athletic Club, more than 75 businesses and organizations such as UMB Bank, St. Louis Community College, and SLU Law host their meetings here annually. These groups have found the scenery,

Don’t forget to sign up for the Weight Loss Challenge to help achieve those goals while taking advantage of discounts on personal training, massage, and metabolic testing! Teams will consist of three to four people depending on the number of participants. All weight loss will be measured in percentage of weight lost, not total pounds lost. After registration, participants can choose a free, one-hour nutrition consultation, one-hour personal training session or a one-hour group training session. Participants also receive 10% off personal training, massage therapy or any other fitness offering scheduled during the duration of the challenge. Did you know that January 24-30 is National School Choice Week?

Forsyth School

Selecting the best school for your child is an important decision. It’s so important that since 2011 an entire week throughout the month of January is dedicated to this topic nationwide. Mark the calendar because Jan. 24-30 is National School Choice Week. More than 90 events will take place throughout the state of Missouri. The purpose of this week is to shine a positive spotlight on the need for effective education options for all children. Sometimes the options can be overwhelming. In St. Louis, outside of the public school system, education options include 21 charter schools and more than 400 private schools (both parochial and secular). With all of these options, there are many factors to consider including location, tuition cost, test scores and academic performance, philosophy, faculty, extracurricular activities, facilities, class size, admission requirements, and college placement. This often leaves many parents wondering where to begin. To help simplify the process, here are some simple recommendations:

You know Forsyth School. A one-of-akind campus with classrooms in 6 historic houses for children age 3-Grade 6. At Forsyth, children learn to understand themselves, each other, and the world in which they live. It’s a place where personal best counts–on the field, on the stage, in the classroom, and on the high ropes course in the Forsyth Adventure Center. It’s a place to stretch beyond your comfort zone–memory mapping, Shakespeare plays, Challenge Days. It’s a place where engaging curriculum meets challenge education. And it all begins with a great early childhood program. Forsyth. There’s nothing like it.

1. Prioritize the Most Important Criteria for Your Child and Family Start by making a list, but be open to revising it as more information becomes available. Consider any special learning needs for your child. Will they perform better in a structured versus unstructured environment? What is a necessity at the school versus what can be supplemented outside of it? Once the top priorities have been identified, move on to the next step. Points to consider: F Teaching and religious philosophy F Available services such as an onsite nurse, librarian, guidance counselor F Grading and disciplinary policies F Faculty qualifications

Choosing the School that Fits Your Family (continued from page 24) and culture of the school is just as important as understanding its offerings. Before visiting the school, prepare questions for faculty, students and their parents. Here are a few examples: F What is the application process? F In the past few years, have test scores risen or declined? Why? F What measures been taken to ensure student safety and security? F Are there tryouts for extracurricular activities? How many students can participate? F Does the school have a dress code?

3. Review, Decide, Apply After all of the pertinent information has been gathered, review it, decide which schools meet or exceed the criteria that is best for your child and family, then start the application process. Know the application requirements early in the process so your child can work towards meeting them to ensure acceptance into his or her first choice.

Children thrive on discovery. Poking, prodding, lifting up stones to glimpse what’s beneath, pulling back the underbrush to see what’s beyond, this is how children learn. This is how questions are answered, and more importantly, how new ones arise. This is why Raintree School is hidden—hidden on 11 acres of forest, stream, prairie, fallen log and giant boulder. It is hidden to be discovered by tiny feet and hands as they are propelled by ever-growing minds. The only Forest School in Missouri, Raintree is a Reggio Emilia inspired independent pre-school and kindergarten. The school’s emergent, project-based curriculum emphasizes innovation, citizenship and grit. Artist of the Month

Judith Hanses Named an Ageless Honoree On Nov. 15, the St. Andrew’s Resources for Seniors System celebrated the incredible contributions of some of the region’s most active and engaged older adults at its 13th Annual Ageless Remarkable St. Louisans Gala. The event highlighted 16 St. Louis seniors who provide a fresh prospective on what it means to grow older by using their “golden years” to travel, continue careers and embark on new ones and lend their time and talents to their favorite charities. One of the honorees was MAC member Judith Hanses, a former U.S. Army colonel and Operation Desert Storm veteran. Join us in congratulating her!

MARK HURD

St. Charles native Mark Hurd is this month’s featured artist in the MAC Art Gallery at the Downtown Clubhouse. Mark became interested in drawing and painting at a very early age and graduated from Washington University Fine Art School with a BFA in Graphic Communications. He worked as an Art Director for Famous Barr and Macy’s for 22 years. About 16 years ago, he began experimenting with photography, drawing and manipulating hand-drawn shapes of color, where he created his “pop” graphic art style influenced by artists like Andy Warhol, Vincent van Gogh and Edward Hopper. Mark currently displays and sells his work at art fairs around the Midwest, as well as working with corporate designers, private clients and galleries. If you are interested in purchasing the work on display, contact Wendy Descher at 314-539-4438 or wdescher@mac-stl.org.
