SURVEY SAYS … What do the Missouri Athletic Club’s Associates, Illinois-residents, and females have in common? Like most members, the majority value the Club’s fitness and dining facilities as well as its aesthetics/attractiveness, culture, reputation, value, and sense of community. Now surprisingly, Illinois-resident members tend to use the Downtown Clubhouse most frequently. Associate members tend to use the West Clubhouse most frequently and reported that the outdoor pool facilities were very important in retaining their membership. Most females rated their overall membership experience as good or very good. Most Associates rated their overall membership experience as very good or excellent. The MAC’s membership committee and department have three initiatives focused on recruiting, engaging and retaining Associate-aged members, Illinois residents and females. Read the feature story on pages 10-11 to learn more about these initiatives and how you can get involved.

from the president Happy New Year! The Board of Governors and myself wish you all the best in this upcoming year. Historians tell us that New Year’s resolutions started with the Babylonians and the Romans. That means individuals have been setting resolutions and breaking them for more than 4,000 years. I thought I could help our members by suggesting a few resolutions for 2018. F Recruit and sponsor at least one new member. F Join the MAC’s Foundations’ All-Star Program; commit to at least $15 a month. F Treat the locker rooms at both locations like you would your own bathroom. This means do not cover yourself in talcum powder and walk around; don’t “borrow” the hangers; stop shaving in the steam rooms; pick up your used towels; and don’t spend all day at the sink.

F Attend one of the many special events at the MAC: Hermann Trophy, Boxing night, President’s Ball, Foundations’ Golf Tournament, Jack Buck Awards.

4 F Cherry Diamond F JAN 2018

F Join one of the MAC’s many Clubs Within the Club (CWC). This is the year to try singing (Apollos), shooting (Rod & Gun Club), enjoying fine wines (Wine Society), learning public speaking (Toastmasters Club) or playing bridge (Bridge Club).

F Take your family, friends, and relatives to one of the many holiday dinners throughout the year. F Go out of your way to thank our many employees for their dedicated service to our 2,300+ members with type-A personalities. F Sign your children up to attend one of the holiday or summer camps.

F Improve your fitness and lose weight by signing up for the many new fitness and spinning classes at both locations. Fitness class schedules are online, and new fitness class information is on pages 28-29 of this issue. F Consider serving on one of the Board’s Committees or even running for the Board of Governors. F Give up one “vice” for at least 30 days. No alcohol, smoking, cussing, chips, fastfood or dessert.

F Nominate a candidate for the 2018 Women of Distinction event. While you are at it, become more active in those events sponsored by our Women’s Initiative Group (WIG). See pages 10-11 for more information.

F Take up a racquet sport. Join one of the racquetball, squash or tennis groups. F Host one business meeting or event at either MAC location; or encourage your business or not-for-profit to schedule an event/meeting at either location.

This issue of the Cherry Diamond will go to print before the December Board of Governors’ meeting. At that meeting, we will discuss the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project as well as the election process. I know you would like to hear more about these two important topics before my next column in February. Look for a letter from me on the MAC website in early 2018. I look forward to sharing more details with you. Hope your holidays were great and you are looking forward to spending more time at the MAC. The FUN continues in 2018; don’t miss out! Resolutions are FUN!

Save the Date! PRESIDENT'S BALL S A T U R D A Y, A P R I L 7 , 2 0 1 8 Happy New Year! As we kick off the New Year, I want to tell you about something new that we’re planning so you can save the date. In lieu of the Foundations’ Gala, this year the Missouri Athletic Club will celebrate its foundations’ supporters and incoming and outgoing Presidents at the President’s Foundations Ball on Sat., April 7. The purpose of this celebratory event is to express gratitude and emanate appreciation for those who have supported the MAC with their time, talents and resources. This is not a fundraising event, rather a thank you to all of our wonderful MAC supporters. Unlike the gala, which cost $150 per person to attend, the cost to attend the President’s Ball will be $75 for foundations’ supporters and $125 for all others. Our foundations’ supporters are our All-Stars, planned givers and various sponsors. If you are not already an All-Star supporter of our foundations, become one between now and the President’s Ball to enjoy the reduced price of admission. As a reminder, the MAC’s three foundations support the Club’s values of tradition, community and culture. The Preservation Foundation preserves and rejuvenates our Downtown Clubhouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Sports Foundation recognizes athletic achievement and encompasses our Charitable Society for Children, which annually supports three local children’s charities. The Foundation for the Arts assembles, maintains and displays the Club’s sizable art collection. To learn more about the MAC's foundations and becoming an All-Star giver, go to the Foundations page of the MAC website or contact Cynthia Goudy, Director of Foundations at 314-797-5474 or cgoudy@mac-stl.org. The average monthly gift is about $50 plus or minus, which may not seem like much, but it goes a long way in supporting our Club and its values when lots of people participate. Thank you to all of our current All-Stars and those who support our foundations. I look forward to celebrating with you and our Club’s leaders in April. See you at the Club,

from the director of membership I’d like to start by wishing our members and staff a happy new year! I can’t believe we have kicked off yet another 365 days of Club excitement. The membership department is spearheading a few great initiatives that we hope will make some traction in the coming year, and we encourage members to stay informed and get involved as much as possible. The Club is a priceless amenity for families, a fantastic spot for business individuals and a hub of camaraderie for all. But we’d like to further press the point that it’s also a wonderful haven for women, young professionals and those in the surrounding regions such as Illinois. Although our name is the Missouri Athletic Club, we can’t emphasize enough that we want this Club to be a diverse family of individuals who love what the MAC is all about, and this includes women, young adults and a core group of Illinois residents. The membership department is excited for the opportunity to involve new members in these three initiatives in order to gain

new perspectives and further retain and engage these target demographics: The Associates, The Illinois Initiative and the Women’s Initiative Group. In this issue, we highlight three individuals who are leading the charge in these endeavors on pages 10-11. Benjamin Reifschneider, Carl Winters and Angie Minges are dynamic leaders whose goals are to elevate member retention, engagement and recruitment within each group. They offer insightful perspectives and ideas, and we are very happy to have them on board. As we look to the future, we are reminded of and thankful for all those who have previously volunteered their time to grow these initiatives to their current state of success. One underlying campaign is currently in the works, which is “Closing the Gap Towards the Cap.” Club membership will be capped at 2,500 members so these initiatives launch at a crucial time as we draw nearer to that number. We have implemented a couple Taste & Tour events at both clubhouses throughout the past

year with the goal of introducing the MAC to prospective members through casual conversations with our expert staff members, food and drink, and a facility tour. We plan on hosting another event on Thursday, Feb. 8 at the West Clubhouse from 5:30-7 p.m. I personally encourage you to invite friends, family and coworkers to this event and showcase everything your Club has to offer! Word of mouth really is the best form of advertising so join me in talking up our Club! I am so excited to continue to lead the membership department through another year. Please consider getting involved in one of these initiatives. Offer an idea; invite a group of prospective members; join me in this group effort to ensure your Club is seen as the St. Louis gem it truly is. Have a blessed new year,

Ashley Hancock Director of Membership

THE 2017 WOMEN OF DISTINCTION.

Nominate a 2018 Woman of Distinction For the past six years, the Missouri Athletic Club has honored six local women who have demonstrated excellence in business and community service. As leaders in our community, our honorees have impacted the community in many different ways, but mostly through their leadership in business, civic, and philanthropic programs as well as by mentoring the younger generation. This year, the MAC will again honor six women who have enriched our community, and will also honor one rising star. The rising star should be someone 35 years or younger who is leading the next generation of professional women to new heights. To nominate someone for the prestigious Women of Distinction award, please fill out and submit the nomination form and provide supporting documents by Jan. 29, 2018 to Katie Mauer at kmaurer@mac-stl.org. The nomination form is available at www.mac-stl.org/ awards/women-of-distinction. Self-nomination will be considered.

IGNITING INITIATIVES

As an extension of the Membership Committee and the Membership Department, three dynamic members are leading three important membership recruitment, engagement and retention initiatives. All members are encouraged to learn more about these initiatives and to get involved.

The Associates

One of the things that makes the Associates— the group of members comprised of individuals under the age of 31—special is that the group is not only a membership tier but also a Club Within the Club, making it a dual opportunity for young members to meet each other and get involved. Benjamin Reifschneider is the current president of the Associates and is leading a membership initiative to revitalize the group and promote it to young members as a fantastic tool for Club involvement. One initiative is to help new members “plug” into the Club when they initially join so the Associates are making it a priority to welcome and engage them. The main way they do this is through their Ambassador Program. “This is something that has existed previously, but we've worked to further define and structure it,” says Benjamin. “Our goal is retention and involvement across the Associates and this program ensures we help our new younger members realize their best Club experience as quickly as possible.” The Associates are led by a 15-member board, the Associates Council. Reifschneider, Brett Benyo, Micah Mills, and Kyle Jacobsmeyer hold officer positions and lead the group's efforts around outreach, engagement, and social programming. Jacobsmeyer is the director of the Ambassador Program so his job is to reach out to new Associates, pair them with current Associate Council members for lunch or drinks to get acquainted, and ensure they get introduced to other Club members in their areas of interest. "We find people who may not know many members or have questions, and we take the initiative to reach out,” says Benjamin. The Associates plan on hosting four main events a year to draw people in, memorable get-togethers that make a lasting impact and that continue to be “not-to-miss” events in the future. “We want signature Associate events,” adds Benjamin. “Our mission is to be a community where our members can socialize, but also be a place they can bring their friends, knowing that the event will be the perfect representation 10 F Cherry Diamond F JAN 2018

of the benefits of MAC membership. We want this to be an extension of the membership department—helping to recruit and grow our base of younger members for years to come.” Next on the group's agenda: planning a luau/pig roast at the West Clubhouse pool this summer Benjamin wants to hit the point home that while they are Associates and plan events with Associates in mind that doesn’t mean that if someone is over the age limit they shouldn’t get involved. “We had a big group of basketball guys come up to our last event (a holiday party that raised more than $1,800 for the CSC charity It's Your Birthday), and we were excited to have them there,” he says. “We’re all for sociallyminded events and promoting fellowship. We never want a member's age to prevent them from joining us. There are Club events that are geared towards all age groups. We want to ensure that we represent the Associates in Club matters and serve the younger demographic.”

To get involved with the Associates, please reach out to Benjamin Reifschneider at benjaminreifschneider@gmail.com.

Women’s Initiative Group (WIG)

This year, the Women’s Initiative Committee rebranded itself as the Women’s Initiative Group. The group is comprised of female members of all ages and membership tenures. Group members will serve the group for just one year. The goal of reforming and rebranding was to bring diversity of thought, fresh perspectives and new ideas to the group while building on some of the great initiatives started by the previous committee. Angie Minges is the new leader of this group. She and the other members are making a concerted effort to engage current female members while recruiting new members. “We have initiatives supporting two priorities: engagement activities for current members and recruitment opportunities for new members,” Angie says. From an engagement perspective, the group is looking at volunteer opportunities affiliated with the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children. They have combed through last year’s member survey, and are using its results to plan some of their initiatives. They are also interested in conducting their own survey to better understand how to appeal to female members. Based on the current survey results, they are taking a close look at athletics and fitness opportunities. “We are looking to develop new athletic programs for women. We have an event in May that will focus on highlighting the different programs and activities we have available to our female members,” says Angie. From a recruitment standpoint, Angie notes, “we want to develop events, activities and initiatives that provide engagement opportunities for our current members but also open them to the public so all can see what we have to offer our female members.” The WIG recently hosted the annual Sip and Shop in mid-November at the West Clubhouse that welcomed a great crowd of shoppers comprised of members and their guests. Upcoming events include a female-focused speaker series entitled Fearless Girls on Saturday, Feb. 10 that will focus on the topics of bullying, self-image and societal impact. The program will be held at the West Clubhouse and includes brunch. The cost is $25 per person, and the first 25 members and guests to register will receive a complimentary gift bag. In April, the annual Women of Distinction luncheon will take place. Nominations should be submitted by Jan. 29. Illinois Initiative

The Missouri Athletic Club’s mission is to be the premier athletic, dining and social club for business, professional and civic leaders and their families in the St. Louis region. The word region is key. Membership Senior Advisor Patti Cundiff and MAC member Carl Winters have teamed up to spearhead an initiative to reach out to those in the surrounding areas of St. Louis, specifically, across the river in Illinois. This region boasts untapped potential for new member recruitment. Carl Winters shares what prompted him to lead this initiative and what his hopes are for the future. First, he noticed several Illinois-resident members frequenting the Jack Buck Grille. “I spend a fair amount of time in the Jack Buck Grille, and there’s a large segment of our membership who enjoy the grille and who are from Illinois,” Carl says. Second, he spoke to a few friends who own bars and restaurants downtown. “Several told me that more than 35% of their regular patrons are from Illinois. So, when I put that all together, I thought that’s a segment I believe that we’re missing over here.” Also, before moving to St. Louis, Carl lived in Springfield, Ill. and a lot of people he knew from Illinois, as far as Springfield, loved coming to St. Louis. Carl further makes the point that there’s no private club in Illinois that offers year-round services or provides business, social and athletic amenities in one place like the MAC. The MAC currently has approximately 145 members who live in Illinois. “There’s a solid 20+ guys that we play basketball with that are from the Glen Carbon/Edwardsville area,” says Carl. “That’s fifteen minutes from the Club. That’s closer than someone coming in from West County. The growing areas seem to be O’Fallon, Edwardsville and Belleville,” Carl points out. “Based on that, I thought, let’s go after that.” He adds, “If they work downtown, why shouldn’t they get involved down here?” Carl is open to ideas about the best way to introduce Illinois residents to the Club. Historically, a grassroots effort of recruiting through friends, family and colleagues has been the best approach. “We need to reach out to an Illinois member and encourage them to bring their friends and coworkers to the Club,” Carl says. A committee is currently in place to help ignite this Illinois initiative, and he emphasizes that it’s open to anyone that wants to join. “The more the merrier,” he says. “This committee is not exclusive; we want to make it inclusive.”

To learn more about the Illinois Initiative, join the committee or offer recruitment ideas, contact Carl Winters at cwinters@ mihmarketing.com or Patti Cundiff at pcundiff@mac-stl.org.

Celebrate

THE FESTIVE LOVE By Janice Denham St. Louis’ Best Bridal Romance is real. Just look at a bride and groom. Their eyes shine, and they share secret glances, warm hugs, intimate smiles. So what is this party about? It celebrates two hearts becoming one. Plus, it is meant to be shared with the dear people who have supported the couple’s love story, which culminates in this milestone. Glamour, drama and shimmer complete the meaningful experience. Unique touches, man-made and gathered, define the décor and define the occasion’s heart. While the bride and groom stand in the spotlight, the party also focuses on the comfort of guests who will not just appear in photos from that day, but walk along the newly-wedded couple’s future path in life. 18 F Cherry Diamond F JAN 2018

PERSONALIZE

Whatever wedding a couple plans, it should look like them. That is where the St. Louis’ Best Bridal program (www.stlouisbestbridal. com) comes into the picture. For this ultraspecial day, a bride and groom’s individual and collective personalities determine its look. Knowing the budget is the starting line. It leads the design of where the momentous event will be held and details a wedding that symbolizes this couple’s unique union. A fabulous venue may be a familiar spot just down the street or a faraway dream. Wherever it may be, it comes with multiple opportunities: possible dates, a gorgeous setting that speaks for itself and also encourages enhancement, options for support and security in a size fitting their vision. Planning may seem formidable, but accessing the online Marketplace of St. Louis’ Best Bridal and getting firsthand tips from reliable vendors at its celebrations – including the fun of events like bridal shows, bridal trivia night and cake dives – planned for and about couples soon to be married.

DREAM

What does a couple see in their dream? Is it welcoming warmth as they step from a chariot or a bus, a wall of mirrors reflecting their joy or simply an overflowing ice sculpture or table of sweets to share with relatives and friends? According to professional resources and local partners of St. Louis’ Best Bridal, a feeling of tasteful luxury permeates. Gowns of frothy tulle or netting or lacy with daring dips in shades of ivory, champagne and rose gold are detailed and embellished. For a bride who prefers the smooth plane of satin, details are graceful and flattering. Gowns come with comfort, too, as brides select from an array with dance-able swing, pockets, short or high-low skirts, colors tucked underneath or throughout a pattern. Long sleeves may be an illusion as a top piece that allows movement. The dream moves on to the party. Does it have bagpipes, a character from Star Wars or never-ending dancing? If a particular holiday is a favorite of the bride and groom, upgrade

the date and bash with matching food and drink – red, white and blue cheesecake, hearty eggnog or heart-shaped everything. A wedding provides the opportunity to plan it, but also lucky is the person who has a day-of advisor built into a venue to steer the wedding course selected in advance. Thus, bride and groom and their families can focus on enjoying the special day-of-days.

EMBELLISH

Announcement of ultra violet as the Pantone color of the year may signify a turn to bolder colors for every aspect of a wedding, from the bridesmaids’ gowns and the flower girl’s hair bow to the color of the mixer the couple chooses on their gift registry. This follows another warmly received favorite: forest green. Gold and bronze gild invitations, tables and is edible on cakes, which hold a prominent reception role in a place of honor. Late-night snacks link a couple to their home, family ties or school traditions. Sweets beyond a centerpiece cake range from candies to pies, doughnuts, s’mores and cookies. Whimsical figures of the lovebirds top the cake almost as often as sleek monograms and initials. Flowers enhance a bride and groom’s color agenda. They are useful beyond bouquets: on the cake, defining a ceremony site, for backdrop, as centerpieces, for a bride’s hair crown. Florists of the St. Louis’ Best Bridal program specialize in the latest looks and designs. In-season and other favorite flowers are arranged to flow and key colors match and complement. Inspired by a natural, bohemian look, lush arrangements feature “greens” that could be old-fashioned peonies, dahlias, stock and roses plucked from the garden to mingle with eucalyptus, green succulents and purple kale.

SHOUT IT OUT

Brides and grooms join the fun by announcing their engagement – for FREE – with St. Louis Best Bridal online and in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Tips on timeline, marriage license, attire, music, venue, photographer, flowers, cake and even honeymoon come weekly by email. Current magazines, a helpful planner and – while supplies last – a T-shirt for the bride-to-be assist a couple’s planning. So do invitations to Best Bridal celebrations. Set calendars and make reservations at www.stlouisbestbridal.com for these 2018 dates: Bridal Party Trivia Night: For Saturday, Feb. 24, each engaged couple reserves a table – the number is limited – with guests of their choice at The Caramel Room at Bissinger’s in downtown St. Louis. Each table seats up to 10. The bride and groom receive a full return in fun and prizes (maybe even a free trip to Mexico!) on their investment of $100 per table. The event begins at 5 p.m. with complimentary treats, appetizers and beverages. St. Louis ‘Blues’ Diamond & Ice: A special evening for special couples on March 15. Details will be announced soon. Cake Dives: Brides-to-be have opportunity in July to dive face-first into a multi-tiered cake for prizes, while grooms-to-be do the same in September. Bridal Shows: In July and November, couples and their support teams find vendors to share ideas one-on-one for customizing that unique, individual wedding. WELLNESS tip

Did you know that the human body’s pattern of movement constantly changes? These changes are often subtle but can have a major impact on how an individual lifts weights, runs or walks – even to the point of prohibiting the ability to reach fitness goals. Having a better understanding of how the body moves can result in improved training, the prediction of injuries before they happen, and the correction of serious muscular imbalances. Call Paul Helfrich (West) at 314-539-4453 to book a movement screening.
