from the president One topic discussed frequently since I joined the Board of Governors in May 2016 is the MAC’s Board of Governors election process. The conversation pendulum swings from the opinion the selection process needs a complete revamp to its fine in its current state. After hearing the periodic debates for more than two years and earlier, I had heard enough talk and decided it was time to determine if a change was warranted. Once I was elected President, I charged the Governance Committee led by Gov. Aaron Pawlitz and the Planning Committee led by Gov. Tracy Beckette to each create an independent task force assigned to evaluate the process used to select Governors and make a recommendation. The Planning Committee drafted a white paper outlining the issues, objectives, a profile for the Board, the role of the Nominating Committee, and the election process. Within this document, they made a strong recommendation for an uncontested election similar to that used by most other clubs. Their white paper was passed along to the Governance Committee, which with a close vote, endorsed the Planning Committee report and recommendations. Not only within the Board but also throughout a portion of the general membership there are strong feelings regarding a contested versus an uncontested election. I do not intend to expand this column with a recitation of the multiple good arguments on both sides of the question. The Board is scheduled to meet on a Saturday in late January and devote the necessary time to discussing this important topic. If the Board is not able to reach a strong consensus, I will not call the question for a vote, and the topic will not be brought before the membership for a vote at this time. If the Board does develop a strong consensus on the topic, then it will make a recommendation to the

membership, and the membership will vote on any changes to the bylaws. Before any such membership vote there would be an extensive communication plan to share and discuss with the membership the basis for the recommended change. Regardless of the outcome of the Board meeting, the election process will not change for the 2019 election. The MAC will continue to offer electronic voting and encourage one vote per family. The hope is to have a friendly, yet competitive election with a strong panel of qualified candidates. As members invested, we need to identify great qualified candidates to become Club leaders. The Nominating Committee, at least for the past few years, has had difficulty filling the slate with more than five to seven qualified candidates. To be perfectly candid, I was not a qualified candidate to run for the Board of Governors in 2016, even though I had been a member for almost 40 years and solicited to stand for election for four consecutive prior years. I had never attended a Gala (about which some of my fellow Governors have teased me) or any Club Within the Club event. I was not knowledgeable about the ins and outs of this multi-faceted organization and had never served on a committee. All I did was play racquetball and have a few Busch beers, which we now have on draft. Recognizing my lack of experience at the Club, once I was elected, I spent hours educating myself and becoming thoroughly acquainted with the Club’s wide array of events, programs, clinics, classes, CWCs, etc. by meeting with Wally, Pam, Larry and the Foundation Presidents. However, it would have been much better if I had stepped into the role already knowledgeable. I encourage you to identify members who embody the following traits and recommend them to the Nominating Committee (see page 7 for more information): a person of integrity,

a team player, a demonstrated leader with strong interpersonal communication skills; has served on a Club committee; has the time and dedication to commit to Board meetings, Club events and committees; has the financial resources to attend the Board retreat and support the Club. As a Club, this should be our goal. Enough said for now. I do not write about this topic to advocate a position, but instead to keep you informed. On another topic, as we start the New Year, the MAC has a renewed partnership with Glen Echo Country Club (see page 26 for details). Through this partnership, MAC members have an opportunity to enjoy full membership benefits at two legendary clubs and three clubhouses. This is an exceptional value for MAC members. Last year, 48 MAC members participated in the program, and the majority are expected to renew with some friends. With this in mind, the first 100 spots are expected to go quickly. Reach out to Morgan Franke in the Membership Department if you are interested in enjoying these benefits through April 2021. Secondly, if you have not already, register to attend the Foundations’ Gala on Friday, Feb. 8. Also, it is not too late to become a sponsor or donate an auction item to support the foundations. The deadline is Jan. 4 to be included in the auction program and other promotional materials. The goal is to raise $75,000 for the MAC’s Preservation, Sports, and Art Foundations to ensure the Club’s values of tradition, community, and culture prosper for future generations. Lastly, and most importantly, happy New Year to you and your family,

G. Keith Phoenix, President Missouri Athletic Club

As members invested, we need to identify great qualified candidates to become Club leaders.

THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS

on the Retirement of Linda Soncasie For almost 30 years, Linda Soncasie has been a vital employee and friend of both members and colleagues at the Missouri Athletic Club. Members and staff wish her the best following her retirement on Jan. 19.

Prior to 1988, Linda Soncasie held a bartending position before beginning her journey at the MAC. Linda’s friend, Kathleen Madigan, told her about a job opening at the Club, which Linda believed was a serving position. After an exhausting five rounds of interviews, she was offered the job. She worked one day as a server before receiving a promotion to the Catering Department, primarily hourly work with daytime meetings. Linda reflects that planning mode immediately began as her first big task was to master the new catering software. Virginia Scott, an employee of about 30 years, took Linda under her wing, for which Linda is still appreciative. Ms. Scott retired shortly after Linda began working, turning over her favorite parties into Linda’s hands with confidence. From 1990 to 1995, Linda switched roles and began working steadier hours in the Human Resources Department following the birth of her child. In 1995, she received a call asking if she would have an interest in returning to the Catering Department, which she accepted. In the early 2000s, Linda continued exploring new positions at the MAC and was hired for a Room Sales position, which she held for a few years. Since then, she has held the position of Director of Catering for 17 years. When speaking to the factors that have kept her working at the Club, she attributes all reasons to connections with members, multiple expressing they view her as family. “Just a quick note to let you know how much I truly appreciate all of your talents,” said Rick Hoyt. “You are the best at making sure every detail is covered and all is exactly as it should be.” One important cherished memory, Linda credits to former Blues player Curtis Joseph, who was the recipient of the Sports Personality of the Year award. That evening, Linda’s son was in attendance with her, and he had the chance to sit down with Mr. Joseph while he signed autographs and discussed sports. Throughout the years, Linda has witnessed the Club go through many changes and milestones. During her first year of employment, the all-male membership voted to allow women to become members. The night of the election she was on bartender duty. One gentleman at the bar noticed and asked what she was doing, as he believed only men should be allowed at that bar. Quickly to her defense, another member stated, “Whatever she wants.” Linda reflected on times similar to these that always kept work interesting. “The members are like family to me; it is never boring and there is always something new coming up,” said Linda. Though the years Linda has received bundles of praise for her dedication. “We are all still walking on clouds when we think and talk about Courtney and Patrick’s reception,” said Kris Hogan. “Again, job well done. As Courtney said, it was like a fairy tale; it was just PERFECT! There is a reason you have been doing this for over 20 years!! You do it well -- seamless!” Her favorite experiences involve small things the Club has rebranded that seem to resonate well with members, such as Clubs Within the Club and events. Reflecting on her years at the MAC, Linda states that she loved working member events such the Jack Buck Sports Awards, the Foundations’ Gala and Apollos events due to the fact she was able to interact with members. Looking ahead, she is excited to focus on her hobbies such as adding to her collection of more than 25 scrapbooks, gardening, traveling to warm locations, card making, eating out and reading. The Missouri Athletic Club wishes Linda the best in her future endeavors! The Foundations’ Gala will not only be a great time but fun and wonderful with many varied food selections, several auction items and good camaraderie. Plus, the funds raised directly support our three Foundations that help enrich the future of our great Club. I hope to see you there!” — President Keith Phoenix

“What makes the Missouri Athletic Club unique is the rich traditions and specific amenities that would not be possible without the foundations. Grants to local children’s charities, the historical elegance of the Downtown Clubhouse, and the honored traditions of annual celebrations, Jack Buck Sports Awards and the Hermann Trophy are just a small percentage of traditions financially supported by the foundations. Through their tax-favored status, the foundations pave the way for which the Club can fund its continued prosperity of member amenities. I cannot thank each member and guest in attendance at this year’s Gala enough for leaving their mark. By attending the Gala, you become a part of the future excellence of our Club.” — Governor Kevin Cantwell, Event Chairman

A Lifetime of Memories The Wahl family has celebrated life’s most precious moments at the Missouri Athletic Club. Being a member of the Missouri Athletic Club boasts more than just the amenities. It provides a place to build fond memories and cherish family moments. Joan and Ed Wahl, long-time MAC members, held their wedding at the Club in 1978. In the following years, the Wahl family love story continued to unfold as their family quickly grew with six children. Between 2009-2018, all six children were married, each holding their special day at the MAC. Since the age of seven, Mrs. Wahl has been active in the Club, joining her father at the Father Daughter Banquets for many years as a child. Throughout the years, Mr. and Mrs. Wahl have witnessed the Club go through changes, renovations and milestones, all of which have made their membership more fulfilling. Together they have proposed many new members, being important contributors in member development. 16 F Cherry Diamond F JAN 2019

JOAN AND ED WAHL POSE WITH THEIR WEDDING PARTY AT THE MAC IN 1978.

All six of Mr. and Mrs. Wahl’s children hosted weddings at the MAC, beginning from the oldest child to the youngest, almost in consecutive years. After sisters Erin Englert, Caitie Zimmermann and

Maggie Hart celebrated weddings, Brigid Lee looked at multiple other venues before deciding those did not measure up to the experience of the MAC. “The standout factor for us was the staff,” said Mrs. Wahl.

“They were on top of every detail and were more than willing to accommodate in any way. My daughter had a specific cake in mind. So, we brought a photo to the staff, and they created it beautifully without hesitation. I think you could bring in any cake from around the world and they would be able to make it at the MAC. There is no better place to hold a wedding. It is perfect!” The last few weddings added even more detail from beginning to end. The Wahl’s began the ceremonies with a cocktail party featuring ice luges for guests’ entertainment. After the reception, the family requested sliders, snacks, beer and beverages in the lobby. Following the ceremonies, the evening concluded with the reservation of an abundance of the Club’s hotel rooms including breakfast the following morning. The Wahl’s believe the hotel rooms added the perfect finishing touch to each precious day, as the new room renovations left a lasting impression.

UNIQUE LOVE AND JOY By Janice Denham St. Louis’ Best Bridal A wedding celebrates two hearts becoming one. Its private intentions are shared with the dear people who have supported the couple’s love story at this milestone in life. So, who doesn’t love a party with people they love and admire? Glamour, drama and shimmer complete the meaningful experience. Unique touches, man-made and gathered, define the décor and the heart’s intention. Memorable people surround a bride and groom who want to walk their future path with them. The occasion holds romance and dreams – evident in intimate smiles between the bride and groom as well as supportive hugs shared among those who attend.

PERSONALIZE

Whatever the wedding plan, it should look like the unique couple planning it. A bride and groom’s individual and collective personalities should stand out.

St. Louis’ Best Bridal program (www.stlouisbestbridal.com) steps into the picture to help reflect their image of this ultra-special day. Knowing a budget is the starting line. It leads the design of where to hold this momentous event detailing symbols of this couple’s union. A fabulous venue may be a familiar spot just down the street or a faraway dream. Multiple options then need deciding: possible dates, a size that fits needs and vision, a setting that speaks for itself or encourages enhancement, options for support and security. At the beginning, planning may seem formidable, so the online Marketplace of St. Louis’ Best Bridal provides firsthand tips from reliable vendors. Celebrations and events like bridal shows, bridal trivia night and cake dives throughout the year dot the year’s calendar where couples have fun awaiting their wedding date.

DREAM

What does a couple see in their dream? Is it welcoming warmth as they step from a

chariot or a bus, a wall of mirrors reflecting their joy or an ice sculpture for beverages or a table overflowing with sweets? Soon-to-be-wedded couples and local partners credit St. Louis’ Best Bridal with providing tasteful luxury in its hospitality. Come to bridal shows to see gowns of frothy tulle or netting or lace with daring dips in shades of ivory, blush and pink detailed and embellished with crystals and lace. For a bride who prefers smooth and classic satin, modern details are graceful and flattering. Flexible fabrics make a bride’s wedding day comfortable, too. Brides select from an array with danceable swing, pockets, short or high-low skirts, colors tucked under or spun through a pattern. Long sleeves may be an illusion as a top piece that allows movement. The dream moves on to the party. Does it have bagpipes, a character from Star Wars or perpetual dancing? If a particular holiday is the bride and groom’s favorite, upgrade the date and bash with matching food and drink – red, white and blue cheesecake, hearty eggnog or heart-shaped everything. A wedding provides an open slate for continued » Cherry Diamond F JAN 2019 F 19

customization, but also lucky is the person with a venue-included advisor who steers the wedding-day course into helpful waters so the bride and groom and their families can focus on enjoying their special day-of-days.

EMBELLISH

For the new year, “living coral” amplifies a desire for “natural” as a signature in weddings. Following Pantone’s previous selections of ultra violet and forest green, the 2019 selection sings out with optimism for renewing joyful connections with family and friends. The hue may be calm or enliven every aspect of a wedding, from napkins to bridesmaids’ gowns, a flower girl’s bow to bouquet blossoms. Gold and bronze gild invitations and tables and become edible decoration on a cake displayed prominently at the reception. Late-night snacks link a couple to their home, family ties or school traditions. Sweets – candies to pies, doughnuts, s’mores and cookies – are offered beyond a centerpiece cake. Whimsical figures of the lovebirds – or their pets – top the cake as often as sleek monograms and initials.

20 F Cherry Diamond F JAN 2019

Flowers enhance a bride and groom’s color agenda. They are useful beyond bouquets: on the cake, defining a ceremony site, for backdrop, as centerpieces, for a bride’s hair crown. Florists of the St. Louis’ Best Bridal program specialize in the latest looks and designs. In-season and other favorite flowers are arranged to flow and key colors match and complement. Old-fashioned peonies, dahlias, daisies and roses, seemingly plucked from the garden, are “new” features in lush arrangements with natural greens mingling with wispy eucalyptus, green succulents and purple kale.

SHOUT IT OUT

Brides and grooms join the fun by announcing their engagement – for FREE – with St. Louis Best Bridal online and in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Tips on timeline, marriage license, attire, music, venue, photographer, flowers, cake and even honeymoon come weekly by email. Current magazines, a helpful planner and – while supplies last – a T-shirt for the bride-to-be assist a couple’s planning. So do invitations to Best Bridal celebrations. Set calendars and make

reservations at www.stlouisbestbridal.com for these 2019 dates: Bridal Party Trivia Night: After its initial sold-out year, this event returns on Friday, Feb. 8, at Orlando’s Event Center in Maryland Heights. A future bride and groom reserves a table-for-10 with guests of their choice. Among the prizes for future newlyweds is an all-inclusive trip-for-two. Couples bring their own food and snacks to keep them sharp and are provided a selection of beverages and open bar. “Diamonds on Blue Ice” VIP Hockey Experience: A special opportunity for couples who want to “bleed blue.” Twenty newly engaged couples will be chosen at random for a morning “warm-up” session with Blues’ alums, refreshments and engagement photo. Cake Dives: Brides-to-be dive face-first into a multi-tiered cake for prizes in June, while lucky grooms-to-be line up to do the same in September. Bridal Shows: In January, June and November, couples and their support teams find vendors to share ideas one-on-one for customizing their unique, individual wedding.

WELLNESS tip

A proper warm-up and cool down are essential to a complete workout. Even a small warm-up involving stretching and breathing prepares the body’s muscles for movement. A cool down is also important because it provides a moment to let the body know it can go back to a resting state. Take time to stretch and rest the body. Without rest there is no progress, balance is key!

NEW YEAR, NEW WEIGHT ROOMS WEST CLUBHOUSE (pictured top right) Phase 1A of the West Clubhouse’s expanded and renovated weight room opened on Sept. 27. The project is completing its final stages with fully renovated walls, flooring and new equipment. DOWNTOWN CLUBHOUSE (pictured bottom right) Renovation on the Downtown Clubhouse’s weight room began in November with all new equipment being delivered mid-December. JERRY SEXTON AND MAUREEN WERNER POSE IN FRONT OF THE BELL OF THE USS ST. LOUIS.

Forever Young Club Tours Soldiers Memorial Members of the Forever Young Club joined members of the Military History Club for a trip to the newly renovated Soldiers Memorial Military Museum on Nov. 27. The excited members were the first group to receive a private tour of the newly revitalized museum. The museum was built in 1936 in memory of St. Louisans’ lives lost in World War l and expanded in 1948 to include World War ll. The new renovation now stands in remembrance of all lives lost in battle from the Revolutionary War to today. The $300 million renovation maintains the building’s architectural heritage while modernizing it to contemporary museum standards. Museum staff and volunteers emphasized that the museum is a memorial for the lost lives of ordinary people in service to the country, not a museum of weapons or battle. On a trip to St. Louis, President Franklin Roosevelt spoke on Soldiers Memorial mission, “We in America do not build monuments to war. We do not build monuments to conquest. We build monuments to commemorate the spirit of sacrifice in war – reminders of our desire for peace.”

Forever Young Club Studies the Coast Guard This month, Lieutenant Commander Elliot Hollinberger, United States Coast Guard will speak at the Forever Young Club meeting. Lieutenant Commander Hollinberger is Supervisor, Base Detachment St. Louis, a service agency that provides support to all Coast Guard units throughout the heartland of America. Without proper support, the Coast Guard would not succeed in crucial search and rescue missions. Less known is that the Coast Guard is uniquely both a military branch and part of Homeland Security. Lieutenant Commander Hollinberger is a graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and holds a Master of Science degree in ocean engineering. Join the FYC at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 18 at the West Clubhouse to hear Lieutenant Commander Hollinberger speak on his experiences.

Midtown Youth Development emphasizes and measures progress toward the increase in: the number of at-risk youth who remain in school and earn course credits toward their diploma, the number of at-risk youth who improve their social and emotional learning, and teenagers that are graduating high school and continuing on to secondary education.
