PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

First off, I would like to share how honored I am to serve the Club in this capacity, as its 100th President. This Club has been a game changing affiliation for me, and I hope it does the same for you. I would be remiss not to lead off with a special mention to the outgoing Board class and Officers – President Dean Eggerding, 1st Vice President Greg Beekman, 2nd Vice President Kim DeMotte, Treasurer John Noce and Secretary John Salter. While their mantra as the Fab Five may have been self-appointed, it’s undeniably served as an appropriate one. Their contributions as a class have been unparalleled as they leave the Club with improved membership, enhanced financial stability and streamlined governance. A standard has been set that our Board class, and all classes, should aspire to achieve. With that, I would like to welcome the incoming Governors who were elected on May 7 – Tim Powers, Mike Schoedel, Paul Shuff, Tim Slater and Talmage Newton IV – an impressive group, to say the least, with high expectations. The Missouri Athletic Club offers infinite opportunities for both individuals and families. I encourage you to explore and embrace some of those opportunities, which might very well be scheduled on the Club calendar over the next few months. If you missed the Opening Day Pool Party in May, consider attending Umbrella Drink Night at the West Clubhouse on June 20. That evening is quickly becoming one of the more popular ones on our summer schedule. The pool opening also marked the kickoff of what promises to be another successful season for the MAC Swim and Dive Team. Meets begin in June. Stop by the West Clubhouse to catch a meet. Save the date(s): On July 10, the MAC will host the 31st annual High School Soccer All-Star Games at the Soccer Park in Fenton. Along with UMB, our longtime event sponsor, the MAC is proud to host this event since the late 1990s. St. Louis is recognized nationally as a vibrant soccer community. The High School All-Star Games, coupled with our annual Hermann Trophy Award, serve as the catalysts for the MAC’s continued commitment to the promotion of amateur soccer in both our community and across the United States. The MAC Foundations Golf Classic Tournament is scheduled for August 24 at Glen Echo

Country Club. The tournament benefits the MAC’s three foundations: the Preservation Foundation, the Sports Foundation, and the Foundation for the Arts. This event fills up quickly so I suggest securing your team and sponsorship now. Please see page 22 for more details. These foundations have become a critical component to the long-term health of our facilities, our ability to expand our community outreach, and to develop and preserve some of our most precious assets. As Past-President Eggerding alluded to in last month’s column, the MAC is embarking on some very exciting initiatives at both our Downtown and West Clubhouses. Downtown, the HVAC systems will be upgraded throughout the entire facility in an effort to go “green” and allow our facility to be much more energy efficient. In addition to the maintenance that has been deferred for far too long, these improvements are the result of an energy audit and facility study that has been going on for several years. With little to no aesthetics associated with this project, membership should understand that these improvements are vital to the longterm health, and short-term in several instances, of our Downtown Clubhouse. Furthermore, the West Clubhouse is set to renovate the main lobby and Dining Room and construct a new bar. This represents direct action to the member survey that was a conducted a few years ago – an adult friendly space for socializing. This new bar will offer both indoor and patio seating and will overlook our swimming pool. Construction is scheduled to begin immediately after the close of our pool in September with a completion date coinciding with the opening of the pool next May. Further details and schematics will be released in the coming weeks and months. I look forward to the year ahead, working with the Board and our amazing staff, as well as getting to know even more members. Your thoughts and feedback are welcome. Please feel free to contact me directly at 314-713-4474. As President of your Club, I also believe we have the collective resources to be a more active contributor to our surrounding communities. Simply put, we can make an impact and help provide an everlasting influence on the success of our community, and I hope to spark a more conscious effort on behalf of our Club and its membership in doing so. As I mentioned in opening, my decision to join the Missouri Athletic Club has proven to be one of the best decisions I have made in my lifetime. One of my goals as President is that every member has the same experience and affection towards the Club as I do. See you at the Club!

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

This June, I’m reminded that as one chapter comes to a close, another begins. While that transition can produce some mixed emotions, the excitement of the possibilities for the future keeps us moving forward. First, thank you to our outgoing class of Governors: Greg Beekman, Kim DeMotte, John Noce, John Salter, and of course, President Dean Eggerding. You’ve helped set the Club up for success. Your leadership, dedication and service to the Club has left a lasting, positive impact, and I know the next Board will continue to use your positive momentum to influence the Club. I look forward to working with the Class of 2017: Talmage Newton, Tim Powers, Mike Schoedel, Paul Shuff, and Tim Slater. Congratulations on your election to the Board of Governors! As I’m writing this column, we’re in the throes of budget season and planning for the upcoming fiscal year. The four As of planning that I’ve mentioned before – agenda setting, allocating resources, activating work, and accountability – are as applicable as ever, especially in respect to the expansion and renovation planned for the West Clubhouse at the start of the fiscal year in September. For those unaware, an adult only bar will be added to the West Clubhouse, and the lobby and Dining Room will be renovated to reflect a similar décor. This is the first time the West Clubhouse has been renovated since 2004 – more than ten years! The timing couldn’t be 6 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2015

better as it follows the 20th anniversary celebration this month of the purchase of the Town and Country Racquet Club, which became the West Clubhouse. A few years ago, this expansion and renovation project was added to the five-year plan, and now it’s imminently on the agenda for the upcoming year. As I mentioned before, this project is a direct response to the request of the membership for an adult space at the West Clubhouse. The request was heard via the survey conducted in 2012 and recognized as a valuable investment in the future of the MAC. Multiple Boards over the past 2-3 years have planned and deliberated over this project. Preliminary overview details for the project are laid out on the facts sheet on page 7, which should provide a basic understanding of what’s ahead.

... an adult only bar will be added to the West Clubhouse, and the lobby and Dining Room will be renovated to reflect a similar décor. Your Club has developed a creative financing plan after researching the best practices of other private clubs. The financing plan and investment strategy will be presented in detail in the Cherry Diamond and, in the end, will not add any debt to the Club.

More good news is that the construction should not affect operations at the West Clubhouse with business as usual maintained through at least December. So, I encourage you to start thinking about booking your holiday parties as prime dates and times fill fast. As the construction schedule develops, we will share all of that information as well, but we expect the Clubhouse to be functioning and accessible throughout the project. Drawings and renderings will be available soon to help bring 1903 into focus. Our Board also approved a project to greatly improve and upgrade the HVAC system at the Downtown Clubhouse to comply with green energy standards and dramatically increase its efficiency. This $2.3 million capital project has been under development for several years beginning with a very detailed energy grade audit. The really great news is that the savings generated from this new efficient system will actually pay the cost of the project and create positive cash flow as we go. I’ll plan to provide more details on this project as it moves forward. As we transition to a new Board of Governors and a new fiscal year, some big and exciting initiatives are underway with several others on the horizon. It a great time to be a member of this awesome place so tell all your friends that the “MAC is on the Move” and enjoy your summer at the Club. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

A new bar and outdoor patio is coming to the West Clubhouse

West Clubhouse Expansion and Renovation Fact Sheet F In 2012, a survey of the membership reported that members want an adults only space at the West Clubhouse. F Construction of a new adult bar and renovation of the lobby and Dining Room at the West Clubhouse will begin in September 2015 with the goal of being completed by June 2016. F The launch of this project is a result of 2-3 years of planning and deliberation with several different Boards of Governors in response to the members’ request. F The bar and Dining Room will be named “1903” after the year the MAC was founded. F Rich wood, fine finishes, custom tables and comfortable seating will add historical ambiance to 1903 in a manner similar to the décor at the Downtown Clubhouse. F The bar will include an outdoor patio with space to seat about 30 members, which will overlook the pool. F Excluding the patio, the bar will encompass approximately 1,600 square feet. F Chef Grant is refining new menus for 1903 with opportunities for taste testing in the coming months. F The West Clubhouse will remain open and fully functioning during construction. F The dress code for 1903 will be “club casual.” F The expansion and renovation follows the 20th anniversary of the purchase of the West Clubhouse. F The project will cost approximately $1.2 million and is considered an investment in our Club’s future. F The MAC will not accrue any additional debt as a result of this project. F New members will support this investment with their initiation fee, which will increase from $500 to $1000 in September. F Members will invest $50 per month over 10 months to fund the project. F This will be the MAC’s first investment/assessment since 2008. F All current members who sponsor a new member during the 10-month construction period will be relieved of the assessment at that point. The goal of this project is to enhance the overall member experience by providing another premier amenity for our platinum Club. Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2015 F 7

West Expansion The election of forward thinking governors goes hand-in-hand with the coming expansion to the West Clubhouse commencing later this year. June 16 marks the 20th anniversary of the MAC’s purchase of the Town and Country Racquet Club, now known as the West Clubhouse. Initial renovations began on this building in 1998. Since then, the MAC has documented most of the renovations and expansions to the property. Gary Wideman, a former MAC president involved in the West purchase, thinks back to how that decision positively affected the growth of the organization. “In the early ‘90s, the MAC was experiencing declining membership and utilization,” says Wideman. “Studies showed the concentration of our members were within reasonable driving distance of the highway 40 and 270 corridor. Town and Country Racquet Club owner, Joe Morrissey, had passed away. At that time, MAC General Manager, Larry Thompson, and I met with Joe’s son, John, to explore some type of reciprocity for our members, only to learn of their desire to 8 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2015

sell. This started the Board of Governors and Larry Thompson on a yearlong journey of feasibility, due diligence, town hall meetings with members, capitalization, and a membership vote that finally led to the acquisition of the West Clubhouse.” Although it seemed a long road to haul, people agreed that it was foolish to not buy the property. “We felt that there was greater risk to the MAC if we did not purchase the West location,” adds Wideman. “We were lucky that Town and Country Racquet Club was available, and the Board of Governors had the foresight.” In 2012, a member survey was conducted to gain insight on members’ “wish list” for the Club. First on the list was renovating the fitness center, which was addressed in 2013. Then, resurfacing the tennis courts was completed in 2014. Second on the list was an adult bar area at the West Clubhouse. In response to members’ request, later this year, a new adult bar area and patio overlooking the pool will be added, and the lobby and Dining Room will

be renovated. The project will begin in September of this year, and the goal is to complete the project prior to the pool opening next summer. As President Brent Kaniecki notes, “Our scheduled West expansion is a direct reflection (actually phase II) of the member survey that was conducted three years ago. It represents our continued reinvestment in transforming the identity of our Town and Country location as a destination facility, both for current and prospective members.” Since 1903, the MAC has been a core institution of St. Louis and continues to remain a lasting and iconic part of the city. With the help of many progressive Board of Governors and continued renovations to both clubhouses, the MAC paves the way for its continued legacy as a Platinum Club of America. “With our location, service, and high quality food and beverage, we have the opportunity with this project to be a premier destination for members and guests in St. Louis County,” adds Governor Beau Reinberg. “This project will take the MAC to the next level.”

Member Spotlight: Steve Merlo

The [Plumbing] Art of Preserving Tradition Steve Merlo had a history at the Missouri Athletic Club even before he became a member, which was in December of 2014. His father-in-law, Ollie Voorhees, was a long-time member of the Club, and Merlo and his family attended many family functions as his guests. As his children grew up, Merlo realized the benefits of having a membership, and the rest is history. His daughter, Kristin, will hold her wedding reception at the Downtown Clubhouse this coming December. Merlo, of Merlo Plumbing and owner of Pipe Solutions, is currently involved in the remodeling of some of the Downtown Clubhouse’s hotel rooms. Using new technology, Pipe Solutions restores deteriorating pipes hidden within the walls without disrupting any of the old architecture – it’s the perfect remedy for the MAC’s 100-year-old pipes. “It’s amazing to completely restore pipes that are hidden within walls or underground with little disruption,” says the Master Plumber. Merlo is proud to be a MAC member, and he feels privileged to help preserve the institution’s history. He and his family regularly utilize both clubhouses, and Merlo can be found at the Business Development Group meetings as well as many other Club events throughout the year. “I encourage others to become members and get involved in all the Club has to offer as my family and I have,” says Merlo.

2015 MAC Double Elimination Basketball Tournament Recap

(L-R) Dan Meckes, Captain Brad Mills, Peter Eggers, Gov. Troy Robertson, Jim McMullin (back row), Tom Caspari, AND Tyler Korte. (Ryan Robertson not pictured.)

The annual MAC Double Elimination Basketball Tournament concluded on April 14. Captain Brad Mills led the 2015 winning team, beating the team led by captain Daniel Clinard. Team Clinard came out of the winners bracket and was undefeated heading into the championship game, and Team Mills emerged from the losers bracket, meaning that Team Mills had to win two games against Team Clinard to win the tournament championship. In the first game, Team Mills won 80-70 to set up a winner-take-all second game (consisting of only one half of play), which immediately followed. In the second game, Team Mills was in control throughout the game, finally beating Team Clinard 37-18 to take the tournament championship. Governor Troy Robertson (Team Mills) was

named Tournament MVP for his play throughout the entire tournament. Robertson scored 18 points in the first championship game, and put up another 10 in the second game. Overall, Al Meitl came out on top with the highest score with an average of 30.3 points per game.

The MAC Welcomes Coach Jim Remmers to the West Clubhouse Coach Jim Remmers was recently hired to teach private basketball lessons and clinics. Remmers is excited about sharing his passion for basketball while meeting and working with MAC kids who are looking to improve at the sport. “One of my first goals is player development,” says Remmers. “It’s about the kids and teaching them the game and skills necessary to compete.” Jim Remmers started playing basketball in Louisville, Ky. In his freshman year of high school his family moved to St. Louis where he attended and played at DeSmet Jesuit High School. He played Division II basketball for two years at Western State College of Colorado and finished his career at Webster University. While there, he led the team in scoring (18 ppg), finished 30th in the country for free throw percentage (90%) and was selected to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) all-conference team. Fun Fact: Coach Remmers won the first three-point contest held by “Hoop-it-Up” in St. Louis at Union Station in 1989. Remmers has been coaching youth to college-aged players for over 20 years. He began coaching at the YMCA in Webster Groves while playing at Webster University. Local schools where Remmers coached include Kirkwood High School, St. Louis College of Pharmacy, and Brentwood High School. Currently, Remmers owns and operates the Mavericks Basketball Center, coaching teams ages 7-18, doing individual and group trainings, and conducting camps for boys and girls ages 5-14. The MAC is happy to have Coach Remmers on board and looks forward to the talents and skills he brings to the Club and its members. Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2015 F 17

Tennis Tips

Indoor vs. Outdoor Tennis The perfect conditions of indoor tennis will vanish when many begin playing tennis outdoors. There are many elements to be concerned about when playing outside. Wind and sun are two of the main challenges. Here are some pointers: If possible, try to serve with the sun at your back. If that’s not an option, toss the ball a bit lower or slightly off to the side. When combatting the wind, there are several tips to try. 1. Hit with the wind first instead of against it. 2. Focus on footwork. Wind makes footwork important since the ball is changing and shifting directions quickly. 3. Utilize a variety of shots. Ones to utilize when playing outside should include topspin and hits down the middle of the court. 4. Lastly, aim consistently. With the wind moving the ball around, it’s important to stay as consistent as possible, hitting the ball more in the center of the court. To learn more about the MAC’s tennis program, contact tennis pro, Scott Stutz at 314-539-4411.

Before the concert began, Governor John Salter announced the 2015 Board of Governor candidates. Shorty after, the Apollos presented tunes from the 80’s to the present, and performed songs such as “Tears in Heaven” and “Bring Him Home.” After the conclusion of the program, guests enjoyed an afterglow and dancing.

On the Road Again ...

with the FYC

On April 30, Forever Young Club members boarded a MAC shuttle for a memorable tour of south St. Louis. The trip was led by Esley Hamilton, St. Louis’s favorite historian and storyteller. The group saw many familiar sights, such as Ted Drewes and the Compton Hill Water Tower. While noting that much of south city was developed after WWII, Hamilton’s focus was on mid-century modernism architecture. In St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Clifton Ave. near Francis Park (a sterling example of St. Louis’s exceptional parks) members discovered that although built in 1939 as a boldly contemporary church for the time, St. Mark’s became the precedent for many 1950s churches. Blue and purple stained glass windows in this long, narrow structure were created by Emil Frei & Associates. After checking out such buildings as Carpenter’s Union Hall (1956) and Bishop DuBourg High School (1954), the group paused at 4401 Magnolia, adjacent to the Missouri Botanical Garden to visit the National Council of State Garden Clubs (1954-59), the headquarters of a non-profit comprised of 50 state garden clubs. Surrounded by the beautiful grounds, the council promotes the love of gardening, floral design and environmental responsibility. South St. Louis embraces an eclectic mixture of sights and sounds. The FYC plans to visit this area again so join in on the fun next time!

Sixth Annual Sporting Clays Championship Standings On April 17, MAC members united for a day of skeet shooting at St. Louis Skeet and Trap. The event was sponsored by the Rod and Gun Club, and 55 members attended. Gov. Chris Hyams and Chuck Koenig won with a score of 174/200. Phil Brown and Jim Finger came in second with a score of 146/200. Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2015 F 25

An Enchanted Tradition Continues The Father Daughter Banquet is an iconic MAC event dating back to the early years of the Club. Fathers, grandfathers, daughters and granddaughters have gathered every year in the stately Missouri Room for an evening of festive fun. President

Brent Kaniecki has attended for ten years straight, and it is one of his favorite Club events. This year, the tradition continued as daughters and granddaughters were treated to a magical evening at the Downtown Clubhouse on May 20.

MAC Investing in the Future Past Since the purchase of the West Clubhouse 20 years ago, many expansions and renovations have taken place. From the conversion of the third pavilion into a gym and squash courts in 1998 to the “New Millennium Project” of expansion and renovation in 2000, what used to be a less than suitable piece of property was renovated into a modern, fully functioning platinum private club. “The MAC is an institution second to none in St. Louis,” says Gary Wideman, past president of the MAC who was heavily involved in the purchase of the West Clubhouse. “With the acquisition of the West Clubhouse and improvements over the years, we have been able to transform the club to retain and attract more families.” Throughout these early years, the West Clubhouse added 23,000 square feet and renovated 13,000 square feet of the original building. A hair care center was added in addition to three business centers and a new dining room. Additional lockers and extra space were added to the men’s and women’s lockers while whirlpools and steam rooms took the athletics department to a higher level. The coming additions and renovations will pave the way for increased member enjoyment and higher member attainment. “Now is the time to bring more of the Downtown Clubhoue culture west with the upcoming additions,” says Wideman. “With these planned renovations and additions, the MAC should be able to attract and retain more members.” ABOVE: The outdated bar area back in April 2003; The mens locker rooms lacked any luxury until the MAC renovated them; What the old Dining Room used to look like 12 years ago; and The West pool being built back in 1998. 28 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2015

Artist of the Month

Barbara Martin Smith

YWCA Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

Barbara Smith, a watercolor artist, views her art as a friend and deliberately engages with the mysterious and beautiful to create her masterpieces. “Rhythms of the process of creating are constant as well as ever changing,” says Smith. “Omnipotence is present in these rhythms like a friend. When I retreat to my studio to paint, I carry this friend with me. Working with the fluidity of transparent watercolor on handmade paper parallels the seen and unseen, known and unknown, foreseen and recalled qualities of the subject, which emerge during the painting process. Each painting comes from within, linking me with the past and future. Each is a deliberate engagement with all that is mysterious and beautiful.” Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts in history, English, art and teaching from Lawrence University, a Master of Arts in International Affairs from Washington University, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Some recent exhibitions include the Missouri Watercolor Society Members Exhibition, Jacoby Arts Center and Watercolor USA. If you are interested in purchasing the work on display, contact Wendy Descher at wdescher@mac-stl.org or 314-539-4438. 30 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2015
