PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

I am humbled and honored to assume the role of President of the Missouri Athletic Club. This Club is family to me. Its members and employees have become the backbone of my daily life. To lead such a special organization is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Being the 101st President of our historic Club is not lost on me. I hope to do my part to continue another 100 years of extraordinary leadership. My goals for the upcoming year are: 1. Increased membership. Membership is our lifeblood. 2. Alignment of our committees, foundations and finances to position our Club properly for future growth. 3. Athletic facility upgrades. We are in fact the Missouri ATHLETIC Club. Our athletic spaces, equipment, and staff should reflect our Platinum Club status. Many members belong to smaller niche gyms for yoga, Pilates, Bar, CrossFit, etc. We need to bring all those concepts to our fitness department and create an all encompassing, one stop shop for our members. We will set out to accomplish these goals with our five newly elected Board members. Matt Morris, Aaron Pawlitz, Keith Phoenix, David Smith and Andrew Carter are a highly accomplished, capable group with a great vision for our Club. I look forward to working with them in the coming year. I know they will hit the ground running. I want to acknowledge the outstanding work done by our outgoing class, led by our 100th President Brent Kaniecki. I admire Brent for his passion for the Club. He is unabashed at proclaiming how this Club has positively impacted his family and career. His goal of sharing his experience with all of our members and prospective new members is certainly one I share and will try to emulate. Thank you Brent for your leadership. You can now return to your usual role of yelling at people on the basketball court! No one has had a greater impact on our Club during the last year than First Vice President Chris Hyams. He worked tirelessly on

1903 and deserves HUGE praise for overseeing its completion ON TIME and ON BUDGET. Peter Dunne masterfully handled our governance committee, and no one was more fun to share a story with at Board dinners. Bob Barnes put his heart and soul into our Club. He was instrumental in growing our tennis program and membership retention – just ask him! Last but not least, Beau Reinberg. No one has a bigger heart for the employees of our Club than Beau. It has been an honor serving with these gentlemen. Speaking of 1903, your new bar is now open. And make no mistake; it is your bar. Your investment paid for it. I encourage everyone to make time to come check it out. What a perfect opportunity to showoff our newest member amenity to a friend, guest, or prospect. With our pool, new bar and dining experience, and our athletic options, no other club in the area can match our member value. Come experience it for yourself! For your reading convenience, here are some upcoming events and Club notes: F Swim and dive teams, summer camps, and new junior golf leagues are all forming now. F The annual High School Soccer All-Star Games will be held at Soccer Park in Fenton on Friday, June 17. Join the MAC in continuing to support our local all-stars! F Save the date for our Foundations Golf Tournament on Monday, August 29 at Glen Echo Country Club. The tournament benefits the MAC’s three foundations: the Preservation Foundation, Sports Founda- tion, and the Foundation for the Arts. Foundation support is vital to the longevity of our Club. Please consider becoming a tournament sponsor; it’s tax deductible! Our Club has so much to offer. I encourage you to get involved. Here’s to a great year.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

We know that many of our members, particularly our avid Cherry Diamond readers, still prefer traditional paper methods to some of our digital offerings. We continuously strive to accommodate everyone’s preferences, while adding benefits and improving efficiencies. Above all, we don’t want to leave anyone behind in our quest to provide digital offerings. As most know, this year, we launched our new website that created opportunities to make online reservations for events, dining, courts, hotel, and most recently fitness classes. The member directory with everyone’s contact information is accessible with the click of the button. It’s easy and it’s readily accessible online. Another benefit and feature of the new website is its ability to make statements available online. We communicated to you that we would discontinue paper statements starting May 31, but upon receiving your feedback, we will be sending one more paper statement to further communicate details about the transition. Most importantly, we want you to know two things. First, while we would like to encourage you to access and pay your statement online, we will certainly continue to offer paper statements upon request. Please contact the Accounting Department at billing@mac-stl.org, write us a note on your statement, call or stop by if you wish to continue receiving a paper statement after May 31, and we will happily accommodate. Secondly, another new digital feature we’re offering is the ability to pay your statement online. However, statements 6 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2016

»

can still be paid in-person, by mail, or automatic ACH through the Accounting Department. For more information about accessing and paying your statement online, please see page 25. Our goal in offering these new digital features is to improve ease of use for you and certainly not to induce any headache. If you’re feeling any pain, please reach out to our staff, and we will be happy to assist you. One other thing to note when reviewing the line items on your statement this month is your final investment in 1903, which opened as planned, on time and on budget, at the end of May. If you haven’t already, I highly encourage you to come out to the West Clubhouse and enjoy your bar. The photos of it on page 10 are beautiful, but hardly do it justice. It was done right, and I want to reiterate my thanks to Governors Chris Hyams, Tripp Zumwalt, Troy Robertson and Duffy Dunn for their dedication to this project and President Brent Kaniecki for his oversight and assistance. Also, I want to extend a special well-deserved shout out to Darrin Harnetiaux for managing the chaos while the construction was underway and Chef Grant Higgs and his staff for ensuring that the new dining and beverage experience is worthy of our Platinum Club status. The food and beverage menus will continue to evolve, and your feedback is appreciated!

Prior to 1903 opening, our foundations supporters got a taste of the new space while enjoying private preopening parties. To say that they were a great time is an understatement. Thank you again to our foundations supporters for being such great leaders of the Club: Mark Belew, Joel Karsten, John Bugh, Scott Engelbrecht, John Carroll, Tim Shocklee, Cheri McLaughlin, Steve Krause, Mike Schoedel, Dean Eggerding, Chris Hyams, Tripp Zumwalt, Tom Dankenbring, and Aaron Pawlitz, to name just a few. Please consider adding your name to this list of supporters this August as we celebrate Foundations’ Month, which culminates with the annual golf tournament. See page 23 for preliminary details and look for more information over the coming months. In closing, I want to further extend a tremendous amount of gratitude to our outgoing Board. Officers Brent Kaniecki, Chris Hyams, Bob Barnes, Peter Dunne, and Beau Reinberg’s leadership has been invaluable to the Club. We also sincerely appreciate their parting gift to the Club – the purchase and installation of a new flagpole at the West Clubhouse. I have greatly enjoyed working with them and look forward to seeing them and you at the Club.

Part y Like It’s 1903

R AISE A G L ASS TO THE WEST CLU B HOUSE’ S NE W BAR , At last, the long awaited and highly anticipated 1903 bar, patio and dining room are now officially open for enjoyment. Following years of planning and deliberation by multiple Boards in response to a member survey, the vision for an adults-only (ages 18+) space for members to enjoy a signature cocktail is now a reality. The rich woods, deep hues, plush furnishings and décor are designed to emulate the look and feel of the historic Downtown Clubhouse and the establishment of the Club in 1903. Lining the walls are old photographs dating back to the early years of the Club and artwork from the MAC’s personal collection. Along with the new bar and patio, the West Clubhouse lobby and dining room were renovated. The spaces allow for flexible entertaining with the dining room available for small tables of 30 or less. Club casual apparel is allowed in all the spaces including khakis and sandals, and all the spaces are non-smoking with the exception of the patio, but with polite discretion. After months of planning and construction, 1903 is fully open and welcomes members and guests to enjoy its offerings. Members, this is your space; this is your 1903. Come have a drink, and celebrate Club camaraderie at its best.

Old Snapshots Grace Walls of 1903 Months prior to the opening of 1903, a search of the Cherry Diamond magazine archives was conducted and images reminiscent of the early days of the Club were selected. Below are some of the snapshots chosen to grace the walls.

For the first time in Missouri Athletic Club history, some of the Foundation for the Arts’ most treasured pieces have been transported to the West Clubhouse. When the West Clubhouse was purchased in the mid 90’s, unifying the two clubhouses was a challenge. With the opening of 1903, now seemed like the perfect opportunity to bring some of our Downtown Clubhouse’s culture and artwork to the West Clubhouse. Five pieces of artwork were hung in time for the Mother’s Day Brunch. One of the pieces includes the esteemed and restored Taxi Please, which hangs prominently in the dining room. In addition, a traveling display hangs in the lobby for guests to enjoy, similar to the traveling art in the Preservation Gallery at the Downtown Clubhouse. Also, a wonderful pictorial history of our Club is displayed in 1903’s hallway entrance and bar. The pictures are a wonderful testament to the history and legacy of the Club. Lastly, the Foundation for the Arts has already identified several pieces that will be transported to the West Clubhouse in the next 90 days. The hope is for our members to enjoy the artwork at both locations and help fulfill a vision for the future by continuing to bring the culture of the two clubhouses closer together. FINE DINING

1903 Fare Serves Up an Eclectic Mix Since opening in late May, the 1903 bar and dining space serves up nothing short of delicious. The menu was designed with the original 1903 menu in mind. Members can get a taste of what MAC members experienced “back in the day” while in a brand new setting that mirrors the old-world charm of the Downtown Clubhouse. Below is a sneak peek of fare that is served at 1903: Sushi Grade Ahi Tuna Wakame Chilled Ahi tuna sliced over wakame salad with wasabi vinaigrette and sweet chili sauce Crudite Fresh organic and local vegetables with Schlafly black bean hummus and Za’atar yogurt dip Caesar Wallace Shaved Romano cheese, asiago crouton, crispy prosciutto, roasted tomatoes, toasted pine nuts and pesto Caesar vinaigrette Rombauer Shrimp Scampi Sautéed with garlic, deglazed with Rombauer chardonnay and vermouth, and served over homemade pasta with asparagus Domestic Colorado Lamb Topped with mustard and Rosemary

1903 Libations Sure to Satisfy By Nichole Miller-Kirk, Certified Wine Specialist Our concept for the 1903 beverage program is to integrate the world of craft cocktails into the modern space while paying homage to the recipes that are representative of that time period. An eclectic wine list with a bevy of selections sourced from all over the globe will grace the menus at 1903. We are going to introduce the elements of digestif and aperitiv, not only in the sense of just an incredible addition to any dining experience, but as an historical element of American culture. One of the wines that 1903 will offer is Madeira, a major beverage here in the States since the infancy of our nation. Madeira is literally “cooked” wine, and it was discovered by accident. Storing wine at proper temperatures ensures that the wine does not go bad or oxidize. On the island of Madeira, off of the coast of Portugal, a fortified wine was born in the hulls of ships as it made its way across the ocean. This wine offers a lovely rich, hazelnut flavor that pairs beautifully with chocolate and all types of cheese. It has a higher alcohol content so it is ideal for the perfect finish to a meal. FUN FACT: Thomas Jefferson kept a steady supply of Madeira in his collection, and at the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the event concluded with a Madeira toast. All of 1903’s cocktails will use fresh squeezed juices because a great cocktail is only as good as the ingredients used. Using the finest of French, Italian and Spanish liqueurs as well as a wide range of unique vermouths, the new 1903 bar will offer members a unique and upscale experience. Bitter and sweet components are a perfect equation for an incredibly balanced and enjoyable beverage (or dish for that matter). Here are a couple cocktails to try: CUCUMBER MELON SIPPER A bright and refreshing Hendricks Gin martini with fresh muddled cucumber and honeydew with agave nectar, and a bit of mint and lime juice to brighten the already refreshing combination. The addition of a small amount of Pimm’s will provide a balance to the sweetness with subtle notes of bitter herbs and a hint of spice. HERMANN SIDECAR Maison Surrene Champagne Cognac with Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao, freshly squeezed lemon juice and a champagne float. It is refreshing, delicious and efficient! 12 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2016

MAC Meeting Corner

By Director of New Opportunities, Najah Fennoy, MBA

My approaching two-year anniversary at the Club marks the perfect time to reintroduce not only myself to the membership but also the goals I’m hoping to achieve during my tenure here. Along with my usual “smile and wave” that you so often see around the Club, there is also my mission to increase the amount of business meetings held at the Club by our membership. As an MBA, I have attended many business meetings and functions throughout the years and have a thorough knowledge of the kinds of meeting spaces that business groups choose, and the MAC is a prime location. Offering historic charm as well as unique character, the Club has an advantage over its competitors. Not only does the building draw guests in with its grandeur, but it also cultivates a sense of camaraderie and fellowship. It’s the perfect place for the perfect meeting. We want your business to be our business. We understand that planning a meeting can be daunting. Your focus should be getting business done—let your Club handle the rest. Suggest your next business meeting be held at your Missouri Athletic Club! With the ability to host groups from five to 500, we have the ability to make your business our business. Contact me at 314-539-4448 or nfennoy@mac-stl.org to book your next company gathering at the Club. 14 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2016

RICHARD JR., RICHARD III AND RICHARD SR. LOVE BASEBALL AND THE MAC.

For the Love of Baseball Gateway Grizzlies owner Rich Sauget and his son Rich Sauget, Jr., share a common love of sports and baseball, in particular. The MAC members reveal how baseball and their MAC membership have solidified their father-son relationship. The Sauget family loves baseball. Rich Sauget, the 67-year-old Gateway Grizzlies owner and MAC member, began his sports adventures while at Belleville Cathedral High School in 1962. Then, he earned a football scholarship to Notre Dame where he also played baseball. Sauget’s son, Rich Sauget, Jr., a former Grizzlies manager and current mayor of the village of Sauget, played football and baseball at Althoff and later at Notre Dame. The Saugets are the only father-son duo to play two sports for the Fighting Irish. Later in life, Sauget played in the Giants’ AAA team in Phoenix in 1973, and although he eventually retired from pro ball, he never lost his love of the game. After spending time studying the effects baseball franchises had on the community, Sauget became interested in owning his own team. In 1991, he took his first look at the Frontier League. Twenty years later, the Grizzlies played their inaugural season in 2001 at a temporary home at Sauget Field. GCS Ballpark (then known as GMC Stadium) opened in 2002. Baseball has played a huge role in this father-son relationship, but both gentlemen also attribute a lot to the Missouri Athletic Club. “I joined the Club for its proximity and the amenities that it provided,” says Rich Sauget. “It was and is a great place for me to stay competitive and intermingle with great people. As my children grew and began to use the Club, I watched them grow to appreciate it as much as I have. We now have begun to share the Club with our children and grandchildren.” Rich Sauget, Jr. gives credit to his dad and the Club for building within him a foundation of camaraderie, good-hearted competition and an overall love of athletics. “The Club and the Clubs Within the Club really have a sense of family and togetherness about them,” he notes. “The relationship I had with my dad grew from starting as a child coming to the kids Saturday morning camp or coming to watch him play competitively downtown. I learned the aspects of competition and camaraderie within athletics. The opportunities those programs and competitions gave to me and what I learned from my dad are lessons that I will never forget. Today, I hope some of those same lessons are being passed to my two sons through the same avenues.” 16 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2016

F Warm-up on both ends of the court to get use to both the wind and the sun. F For strong hitters, hit with the wind at your back first and then move to the side with the wind in your face. If you do the opposite, you may find it hard to keep the ball in once you move to the side with the wind at your back. F Hit the ball higher over the net when playing against the wind. F Use your topspin to bring the ball down when playing with the wind. F Keep in mind that a good lob in windy conditions or with the sun at your back is a very effective tool! F When serving into the sun, try changing your serving position along the baseline, making the sun less of an issue. Also take a few practice tosses to find where you would like to toss the ball to avoid the sun. F If the sun is really bothering you during your serve, it may be advisable not to rush the net right away. This will give your eyes a little more time to adjust. Visit the website to read more of Kim’s tennis tips.

Although it sounds counterintuitive, eating daily and maintaining an intake of at least 1,200 calories is an important step to losing weight. Anything less than that number can drastically slow down metabolism. 24 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2016

J I M T ROT T ER

Meet Nichole Miller-Kirk In preparation for the opening of the 1903 bar and dining room, Nichole Miller-Kirk, Training Manager and Certified Wine Specialist, was hired to oversee the wine and dining program at the new space. She also oversees staffing and setting the standards of service. Nichole has worked in the food industry since the age of 15. Since then, she has spent time at some of St. Louis’ top restaurants. Although she has a bachelor’s degree in English literature, she has always had a love for libations, specifically wine. Currently, she is studying to be a Certified Sommelier and will take her exam this August. The wine specialist hopes to build a rapport with the MAC membership so that they feel comfortable coming to her with questions, concerns or comments. “If I am not able to address the situation personally, I will make it a point to help the member resolve any issue they have,” she says. Outside of work, Nichole loves to read fiction and take her dog for walks in Forest Park with her husband. She also loves music and enjoys time at the blues music venue that her husband manages. “We’re also big Euchre players,” she adds. “There’s nothing like a good card game.” Join us in welcoming Nichole!
