PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

It is an honor to serve as your 102nd President of the Missouri Athletic Club. This Club has been an important part of my family’s life – we hold the legacy and character of the Club in high regard. I will do my best to work with our Board of Governors and professional staff to continue to make this one of the best Platinum Clubs in the country. One of the reasons for the MAC’s success is due to the many people that have served on our Board of Governors. Our outgoing senior class is no exception. They worked hard during the last three years to establish plans that will keep the MAC successful for another 100 years. Let me point out a few: F Duffy Dunn, our Treasurer and Finance Committee Chairman has been steadfast in his pursuit of moving the Club towards a stronger financial picture. His calm leadership was quite evident in working with staff to improve our long-term debt positions, better understand our pension obligations, increase our operating cash, and develop better financial models. F Tripp Zumwalt was part of the leadership team that developed and managed the construction of the 1903 bar. He gave up numerous hours of his personal and work time to make sure that 1903 was built right. One year ago, the 1903 bar, patio and renovated dining room opened. Since then, it has quickly become THE gathering place for our members. Great legacy, Tripp! F Before Rebekah Bahn-Kingston was a Governor, she was one of the key forces in designing programs to attract more female MAC members. As a Governor, she continued this effort as well as helped improve efforts to attract members of all ages. Numerous events for the Women’s Initiative Committee such as networking happy hours, Sip ‘n Shop, Chipping and Cheer and the Women of Distinction Luncheon were successful due to her leadership. F Tracy Beckette used his experience as a banking executive and an executive officer in the army to push the Club to develop a strategic plan. This is not a plan to sit on the shelf, but rather his efforts have helped staff and the Board to develop a plan that will be actively used by future boards. This effort was so important to Tracy that he ran for the Board again. F Very few members are more passionate about the MAC than Troy Robertson. He has been an instrumental part of the leadership of this Club for the last six years – helping to transform the dialogue from “these are challenging times” to “the MAC keeps getting better!” It was fitting that in his last year, he 4 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2017

was the 101st President of the MAC. Troy was a master at putting people in the right places, respecting the long-time members, honoring those that served, motivating our younger members, and bringing positive attention to all MAC employees. Thank you, Troy, for your continued thirst for excellence. On behalf of the Board of Governors and membership, we thank our outgoing Governors for your service. We all know that being a MAC Governor takes special people, but it also takes supportive families – a special thank you goes out to the families of our outgoing class, who were incredibly patient and supportive during their service. I’m looking forward to working with our talented CEO/GM Wally Smith and his professional staff. The MAC is not a Platinum Club by accident – much of that success is due to our unbelievable employees. I’m also looking forward to serving with my fellow classmates and with the Class of 2019. On behalf of those Governors, I would like to welcome and congratulate our newest Governors: Kevin Cantwell, Mark Brandom, John Pennington, Tim Malyszko and Tracy Beckette. Our Board is made up of talented and motivated individuals. Together, we will work towards the following goals: F Complete and implement the strategic plan. F Update our Club Policy Manual. F Facilitate a review and dialogue about our governance model. F Increase retention and continue positive membership growth. F Reaffirm the efforts toward expanding the influence of our Foundations. F Implement structural improvements to our athletic venues. I don’t take this honor of being your President for granted. The MAC is an institution that commands respect in the community, provides an atmosphere of camaraderie, facilitates networking opportunities for thousands of people, and has always been true to its middle name – ATHLETIC. Humbly, I ask for your support as the MAC Board of Governors works to maintain and enhance YOUR Club. Let’s have some FUN! Respectfully,

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

For the past few months, your Board of Governors, Strategic Planning Committee, senior staff and myself have been diligently dissecting the results of the membership survey. From these results, we have identified key areas where changes need to be made to better serve the membership. As a starting point, the Downtown Clubhouse’s athletic department and fitness facilities are a couple of the key areas that will be addressed, and several projects are on the table. You may already be aware of our first project, if you watched (at the time) President Robertson and President-Elect Schoedel’s recently released video on our website and YouTube channel. If not, login to the website or spend some time on the MAC’s YouTube channel. You could easily spend an afternoon watching old videos that highlight our fantastic Club and members. You’ll find yourself smiling and laughing with those on the screen and probably learning something new about the Club that you didn’t know before. But I digress... The focus of President Robertson and President-Elect Schoedel’s recent video are the upgrades coming to the 11th floor of the Downtown Clubhouse, which was previously used for Judo. Beginning in July or August, the space will undergo a renovation, which will include new flooring, new ceiling, and new equipment. Once completed, Courtney Hutt, our Downtown Fitness Manager, will offer group fitness classes in a space designed

»

just for that purpose. We’re really excited about these upgrades, and I know Courtney is too. However, we can’t leave the West Clubhouse out of the fun! One thing that jumped out at us from the survey results was the number of members who reported that they take fitness classes, specifically Pilates, yoga, and spinning, at other studios outside of the MAC. We want to provide superior offerings in these areas so our members don’t have to go elsewhere to get them. We want to be competitive. With that in mind, we’re looking at the available space at the West Clubhouse and considering ways to reconfigure it for better use. Once we address these areas, from there, we’ll also look at group exercise space and an expanded fitness center, including space for stretching, weights, and offerings that we know are important to you. For more messaging on this topic, check out President Robertson and President-Elect Schoedel’s second video that was filmed in one of the West Clubhouse’s seven racquetball courts and features our West Fitness Manager, Paul Helfrich, who is also excited about the potential to improve his fitness offerings. There is much to look forward to, and we’ll keep you updated as more details develop. To add to the excitement, it’s pool season! I want to give a shout out to our pool and maintenance crew who worked hard to open the outdoor pool at the West Clubhouse a little earlier in May for our lap swimmers. Wow, it looks great, and I know it’s getting everyone excited for the Opening Day Pool Party, which will have passed by the time this publication is printed and delivered to you. I have no doubt that this will be another fantastic summer at the MAC. Looking back at this time last summer, we were celebrating the opening of the new 1903 bar and patio and the renovation of the lobby and dining area. A year ago, the space was really new and exciting. Now, the dust has settled, and I’m pleased to share that the space is still exceeding our expectations as far as attendance

and usage. However, we know that a number of our members still haven’t been out for dinner or invited their friends, family or co-workers to dine in the renovated space. We would still like to encourage you to do so. The phenomenal teamwork between Chef Grant and our Sommelier Nichole Miller-Kirk really produces a delightful meal that everyone should take the time to experience. Please, come support our food and beverage department in the 1903 dining room. Speaking of support, in August, we’ll celebrate the second annual Foundations’ Month with our sell-out golf tournament at Glen Echo Country Club. There are still sponsorship opportunities and threesomes available, but spots are filling fast. I have no doubt that the event will sell-out shortly so reserve your spot now, if you want to participate in this great event and make a tax-exempt contribution to the MAC’s three foundations. Also, if you want to swing a club a few times before the tournament, don’t forget that we have great partnerships with five local country clubs with golf courses. Glen Echo has invited our members to participate in many of their upcoming events (see page 24) so take the time to try out their course before the tournament! In closing, I want to congratulate and welcome the newest Board of Governors class of 2020: Tracy Beckette, Mark Brandom, Kevin Cantwell, Tim Malyzsko, and John Pennington. These talented gentlemen are joining an illustrious group of individuals. I appreciate their commitment and service to the Club, and I look forward to working with them for the next three years. As usual, these are exciting times at the Missouri Athletic Club. Thank you for not only being part of it, but for being the reason to make it all happen. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2017 F 5

MACPast 50 YEARS AGO AT THE MAC Here are some highlights from 1967 when these members joined the MAC.

GYM IMPROVEMENTS ARE FIRST OF MORE IN THE MAKING The gymnasium’s facelift with bright fluorescent lights was one of multiple projects completed in the athletic department. Air-conditioned handball and squash courts, redecoration of the ladies’ section and plans to add a regulation doubles handball court and squash court rounded out the improvements.

OUTING BASKS IN RESORT WEATHER The 1967 Outing took place on June 22 at the Spring Forest Resort just south of the city on a lovely 80 degree day. Members played in the Board-Apollos softball game and in the egg-throwing contest. The afternoon continued with numerous volleyball games, swimming and horseshoes, al fresco feasts and plenty of camaraderie. Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2017 F 9

He is now able to offer postural screenings, functional movement assessments, Goniometric assessment (measuring joint range of motion) and injury prevention. Every single person has some kind of over/under active muscle imbalance whether it’s from sitting at a desk all day, having a job with repetitive movement, or just doing daily tasks. Paul can identify these issues, assess the source of the problem, and correct it. Part of the screening will involve injury prevention. Breathe! Breathing is a key element in exercise. Make sure to exhale during any contractions/movements that exert force. Exhaling at the right time squeezes the abdominals and activates those core stabilizing muscle groups. SWIM AND DIVE TEAMS

Make a Splash

For the second year in a row, the MAC’s swim and dive teams are at maximum capacity. As the 2017 season gets underway, the Cherry Diamond wanted to highlight this popular and growing program, which dates back to the early years of the Club.

2016-2017 Seasons

In recent years, the Missouri Athletic Club’s swim and dive teams have experienced a spike in enrollment with programs reaching capacity well before the start of the season. Current and new members flock to the Club to enroll their children in the Penguin and Puffin Swim Teams and the Dive Teams.

SWIM TEAM After having such a terrific season last year, the swim team looks forward to another competitive season. Some highlights from 2016 include: F Winning the division championships with six teams total in the division F Nearly 230 swimmers participated in the swim program F The 11+ age group had the most participation in many years

THE GALAKATOS FAMILY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF SWIMMING In 1997, Matt Galakatos, the oldest of six children in the Galakatos family, joined the MAC swim team. His siblings Kelly, Erin, Jenna, Kara, and John followed in his footsteps, and in 2010, all six children were enrolled in the program. “It was a lot of fun with all of them swimming, but we couldn’t turn our back on the pool or we would miss one of their races,” said mom JoAnn Galakatos. “The swim team has been a favorite summer activity for all of the kids,” continued JoAnn. “They get to meet and hang with their summer friends and get to know a lot of new kids outside of school.” The three oldest Galakatos children went on to swim on their high school teams, and JoAnna attributes their success to being properly prepared by the MAC’s program. “Erin and Jenna just made it to the state championships on the same relay team,” JoAnn added excitedly, “which made for a proud parent moment.” 16 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2017

DIVE TEAM Last year, the Dive Team also boasted four new records achieved by talented swimmers: F Ansley McGowan broke the 8 and Under Girls record F Marin Hugge broke the 9-10 Girls record F Garner Hostnik broke the 11-12 Girls record F Caroline McCool broke the 15-18 Girls record Nikki Hostnik, MAC dive team parent rep, shared that the McCool family, now graduated from the program, excelled in the sport during their time on the team. “The McCools were diving superstars,” Hostnik said. “All three of the divers

were so fun to watch. They were so talented and such nice kids. It was fun to see the younger divers watch them and get inspired!” Jim McCool, father of the superstars added, “Although the McCool children have retired from the program, we greatly enjoyed watching them dive for the MAC the past several summers and will miss it as the season rolls around.” Hostnik’s daughter, Garner, is enrolled in the program, and she states that the experience has been nothing short of wonderful. “The dive team is so welcoming and fun,” she says. “Our daughter had never done a formal dive when she started, but within a few years, she was up on the record board! She was a little nervous to join the team, but the coaches are so patient and helpful. It’s great to watch all ages cheering each other on and encouraging their teammates during dive meets; that is the great MAC team spirit!” Sean McGowan is a swim and dive dad who loved the sport in high school and passed on the love to his three kids. “My children seem to love all of it: the training, the competition, and the camaraderie. My wife and I very much enjoy watching our children work hard to contribute to the teams. The children enjoy the practices, meets, and of course, the banquet.”

O. Bauer, the MAC’s Athletic Director from 1916 to 1962. He played an integral part in developing the MAC’s swim program and was known nationally for creating a system for teaching children ages eight to 18 to swim by age group. The American Red Cross still uses this system today, as do many other athletic clubs throughout the country. In conjunction with the St. Louis Chapter of the America Red Cross, Bauer also founded the Meramec River Patrol, which is credited for saving hundreds of lives. In the early years, water polo was also a favorite sport at the Club. The first team was established in 1903. This same team participated in the inaugural Olympic water polo competition a year later in 1904. In later years, the water polo team again rose in prominence, participating in the 1948 Olympic tryouts and winning the national AAU title in New York the following year. Fun Fact: In 1906, MAC members competed in the first 10-mile Mississippi River Swim. A three-foot solid silver cup was donated by August A. Busch for the prize. With the current popularity of the Swim and Dive Teams, the MAC anticipates that swimming will remain a staple sport at the Club for many years to come.

In late April, the MAC sent four basketball teams to Spokane, Wash. for the 2017 National Association of Club Athletic Directors Tournament hosted by the Spokane Club. Thirty-nine teams in seven different divisions from 11 clubs participated in this year’s tournament. The four MAC teams competed in the A division, the AA (35+) division, the Masters (45+) division, and the Golden Masters (55+) division.

“The NACAD basketball event in Spokane was an excellent representation of what it is to be a MAC member. No other club showed the support and camaraderie displayed by the MAC basketball players. Players showed up for other teams’ games and the culmination was 45 guys having a great evening at a steakhouse on Saturday night. Stories were told, fake news was spread, but in the end, lifetime memories were created.” — Governor Kevin Cantwell, Golden Masters 55+ “This year’s trip might be the highlight of my three years as a MAC member. Having the Masters and Golden Masters on the trip adds a whole new dynamic. GROUP LEARNS ABOUT RELIGIONS Members of the Forever Young Club recently took a religions trip up Weidman Road. The first stop was to the only Hindu temple in the St. Louis region. The group found the temple to be beautifully appointed with handcarved architectural details. The next stop was the largest of 22 Muslim mosques in the area. The mosque was relatively plain as Muslims do not believe in icons. Leaders at both institutions explained the tenets of their religion and answered the group’s questions. Although Hinduism is a polytheistic religion there is one “god” that is supreme – Brahma. Muslims refer to God as Allah because while “god” can be made plural, Allah cannot. You asked for him, and the FYC got him: the irrepressible Johnny Rabbitt! A St. Louis radio personality from the ’50s and appearing since 1962 as Johnny Rabbitt, Ron Elz helped usher in the Top 40 world on the late but fondly remembered KXOK. Through the years, he has become an expert on St. Louis history and developed several short programs about it. He will offer his “Tour of Gaslight Square” at the FYC meeting on June 16 and share some recollections of radio and music that goes with it. Today, Elz hosts “Route 66” on KMOX every Saturday night, a show that highlights hits from the ‘50s and ‘60s spiced with memories of radio and St. Louis from the past. As he told Ladue News in 2015, “Oldies connect with people.” Join the group at 11:30 a.m. to hear this famed personality. Register online or call 314-539-4490.

LEARN ABOUT MAC ART The Club boasts an important art collection that is housed primarily at the Downtown Clubhouse. An additional traveling display rotates exhibits in the lobby. At its July 21 meeting, the FYC will receive a briefing on that month’s selections for the West Clubhouse and a program about the full collection by a representative of the MAC’s Foundation for the Arts. Be sure to attend! Register online or call 314-539-4490. 26 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2017

Preparing to Unveil a Refreshed CHER RY DIAMOND In 2014, the Missouri Athletic Club introduced a significantly redesigned Cherry Diamond magazine. The redesign was done to better communicate the MAC’s programs and offerings with members by evolving to maintain relevancy as a publication and communication resource, establishing a stronger brand by instituting consistent standards and layout, and improve legibility by optimizing the design. The final product was well received by the membership. In the recently completed survey, members reported that the Cherry Diamond is still the go-to resource for MAC information. To continue to serve the membership with this valuable publication, which began during the initial formation of the Missouri Athletic Club in 1903, the Communication Department is preparing to launch a refresh of the Cherry Diamond design with the August 2017 issue. The refresh will not be as dramatic as the 2014 redesign. However, members should notice a new masthead, updated fonts, dynamic color palette, and other minor layout changes. The goal of this refresh is to continue to provide the best communication resources to our members by maintaining relevancy. 30 F Cherry Diamond F JUNE 2017
