from the president Since becoming a member in 1980, I have enjoyed the Missouri Athletic Club’s dining, athletic facilities, networking opportunities, and fellowship. I agreed to run for the Board of Governors to serve the Club that has served me well for 38 years. I am honored to serve as your President alongside the other 14 Governors. Together, we will carry forward the exciting projects initiated by past Board members such as the West Clubhouse Fitness Expansion and Renovation project, upgrading the spinning bikes and weight room equipment, additional hotel room renovations, second floor men’s restroom renovation at the Downtown Clubhouse, new kitchen equipment at both clubhouses, along with other improvements, and ultimately, finish our term knowing the Club is better positioned. I want to extend thanks to the outgoing officers: Talmage Newton, Tim Powers, Paul Shuff, and Tim Slater. Special thanks goes to Mike Schoedel for reasons too numerous to mention. I sincerely enjoyed getting to know these men and their love for the MAC. I thank each of you for your leadership and Board service. The MAC has been fortunate to thrive under many strong leaders, and I will strive to follow that tradition. In addition to my 38 years of membership and contribution to many of the MAC’s committees, I bring some helpful experience to the presidency. I am a founding member of Sandberg, Phoenix & von Gontard law firm, which has grown from its original seven attorneys in 1979 to 151 attorneys with offices in Illinois, Missouri and Kansas. Additionally, some say my combat experience in Vietnam will serve me well in battling periodic rumors and misinformation heard in the Jack Buck Grille or the 1903 bar. In all seriousness, I am a strong proponent of open communication and believe it is a key factor

influencing growth and success, an area where I set numerous communication goals for this year. Wally Smith has a great saying, “I hate to ruin a good story with the facts,” but this is the crux of my goal. Behind the scenes, the Board of Governors work hard serving on committees and meeting regularly outside of the monthly Board meeting to improve the membership experience. Most of the discussion is kept within these small groups. Instead of sharing the pieces that lead to the bigger picture, generally we wait until the pieces fall into place and then occasionally communicate the bigger picture. As a private club, we do not want to share these pieces with the public, but they should be heard among the membership. This is your Club, and you should know what discussions are taking place and why decisions that affect your Club and membership are made. The MAC’s Communication Department staff use a variety of mediums to communicate with the membership: Cherry Diamond, website, weekly emails, social media, etc. While it is important to have this media mix, research has shown that word of mouth is the most effective form of communication. By sharing information and spurring conversation within the membership, I hope to increase member knowledge and engagement with the Club. To help facilitate the dissemination of information and conversations, expect to see Board members at Club Within the Club meetings and other MAC events delivering brief updates about important initiatives. Additionally, some months, I will ask others on the Board to write this column to share their point of view. Wally Smith and I will also schedule a quarterly meeting with past presidents to share

Club projects and to gain their input. The first of those was a breakfast meeting last month. Several of the past presidents joined us. Wally and I are also discussing the possibility of an open forum with members to again provide information and answer questions from those who might be interested. In addition to increasing communication within the membership, I want to create more awareness of the MAC and its activities by publicizing them outside of the MAC. There is so much the Club does that never reaches the attention of our greater St. Louis metropolitan community. Two recent examples are our Habitat for Humanity Project and the Women of Distinction Award. The Charitable Society for Children, another example, over the last ten years, raised and donated in excess of $300,000 to various children’s charitable groups. These public awareness messages will raise the profile of the Club and may help attract members. You will hear our long-time members and friends at 101 ESPN and KMOX regularly mention the MAC. Recently, I also arranged a partnership with Saint Louis University and expect you will hear the MAC mentioned during the basketball season on the weekly 101 ESPN Coaches Corner Program. The underlying point of these communication goals is the Missouri Athletic Club’s plethora of activity, program offerings and amenities are some of the best kept secrets in St. Louis. I am a firm believer in sharing the Club’s remarkable qualities and exciting activities. With everyone helping, this will be a great year.

G. Keith Phoenix, President Missouri Athletic Club

from the general manager Around this time last year, now past presidents Troy Robertson and Mike Schoedel published a couple videos about the fitness renovations planned for the Downtown and West Clubhouses to address member survey feedback. At that time, the planning phase was just getting underway. Today, many members are enjoying the newly renovated group and functional training rooms at the Downtown Clubhouse, and construction is underway at the West Clubhouse. To reiterate the most important point, from the beginning, your Board, Planning Committee, and Club leaders have been doing their due diligence to ensure these projects are brought to fruition in the best way to address the long-term needs of the overall Club’s membership (see page 23 on the process). Now that a decision has been made about what to include in the design, the architect can begin to draft the final plans, and our contractor manager can acquire the proper permits and finalize costs. I am super excited to share the updated design drawings once they are completed along with the timing and various program enhancements. Speaking of programs, we worked out the Glen Echo Full Membership program, which gives 25 MAC members full membership benefits for only $275 per month. This yearlong pilot program filled quickly so we have enacted a wait list. If the wait list continues to grow, it will spur further discussions with Glen Echo about how to accommodate this demand. If you’d like to learn more about this opportunity, see page 10, or watch some of the participants online at the MAC’s website. You can also reach out to Michael Gray

who is the guy on this in the Membership Department. Foundations’ Month in August will be here before we know it so I encourage you to start thinking now about becoming a member of our All-Star Team of monthly givers, if you aren’t already. The average gift is about $20 a month, and if everyone gives a little bit, it can make a huge impact on our Club. You can signup through the website or by contacting Cynthia Goudy, our Foundations’ Director. The Foundations’ Golf Tournament is the grand finale to our Foundations’ Month. Golf is sold out, except for one $5,000 Platinum Sponsorship, which includes two threesomes in the tournament; your company’s logo on printed materials such as signage at each clubhouse entrance, the backside of the chit throughout the month, banner signage, and signage at the tee or green; three Cherry Diamond ads, recognition at the awards dinner, and more! This sponsorship could be gone by the time you read this magazine so, if you’re interested, reach out to Katie Maurer quickly, and she’ll get you squared away. Also, if you sponsor this year, you’ll get right of first refusal to participate in the annually sold-out golf tournament next year. While I’m on the topic of sponsorships, I want to give a shout out to Mark McClanahan of Mosby Building Arts, who for the second consecutive year is the Presenting Sponsor of our Foundations’ Golf Tournament. Mosby Building Arts matches the chit donations throughout the month of August up to $20,000, which was achieved last year. We are incredibly appreciative of Mosby Building Arts and all our sponsors. Another notable thing

is that Mark was a fairly new member when he expressed an interest in sponsoring the golf tournament last year. Sponsorships and auction item donations are great ways for new members to get involved in the MAC’s culture of giving. The MAC needs live and silent auction items for the August golf tournament and our Foundations’ Gala in the spring. In the past, members have donated trips to their homes in Napa or Belize; these made great live auction items. Tickets to the dinner and auction following the golf tournament are still available, and we would love to get some new faces involved in this portion of the event as well. While there is much excitement right now, the planning process isn’t done. The beauty of our process is that it’s cyclical, and it’s about to gear up to get started again. These summer months mark the end of our fiscal year. The staff are preparing budgets and goals for the upcoming year, which will be worked into the planning process, and our newest Board members are becoming initiated into it. Welcome aboard Gene Frederic III, Philip Hayes, Daniel Lett, Jeffery Moore, and Nat Walsh! We’re excited to indoctrinate you into the process so the Club can continue to make fantastic strides under your leadership. I look forward to working with you. Have a great summer! See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

MAC MEMBERS

Enjoy Full Membership Benefits at Glen Echo Country Club

In April, the Glen Echo Full Membership Program was extended to 25 MAC members. For $275 per month, these members receive full membership benefits at Glen Echo Country Club, including golf, and utilization of the pool and clubhouse facilities for the entire family for a year. A few members shared their experiences so far with the Cherry Diamond. GOV. TIM MALYSZKO, MAC MEMBER SINCE 2007 Tim is an avid golfer so joining Glen Echo’s full membership program was an easy decision. “I applied for membership to take advantage of the wonderful golf course here,” he said. “I’ve had the pleasure of playing here due to [the MAC’s] relationship with Glen Echo as well as being a part of the MAC’s Golf Club so it just seemed like a natural fit when the opportunity came up to join.” The MAC is encouraging members to join the waitlist to determine the demand for the program. “If an MAC member was looking to get on the program list, I would highly encourage it,” Tim said. “So far, my experiences have been terrific. The course is in great condition. There’s great camaraderie not only with the MAC members but also with the members of Glen Echo. They welcomed us with open arms; it’s just been a fantastic experience.” In the coming months, Tim hopes to utilize more aspects of Glen Echo. “I would love to get involved in Glen Echo’s golf outings,” he noted. “In addition, I’d like to use the pool this summer as another alternative for the kids and also the great dining opportunities; it’s a great place to have a few drinks and a bite to eat after playing a round of golf with MAC members.” Tim hopes that this relationship will continue to evolve. He noted 10 F Cherry Diamond F JUN 2018

that a little bit of competition would be fun. “I would like to see this relationship evolve so that maybe we’ll have a little rivalry between MAC members and Glen Echo members. It’d be another little aspect we could bring to both golf programs.”

REBEKAH KINGSTON, MAC MEMBER SINCE 2005 Golf is a big part of Rebekah Kingston and her husband John’s life. “We joined [the program] because we both love the game of golf, and we want our kids to get into it,” Rebekah stated. “We love this course, and we’ve always loved this course. It’s conveniently located in between his office, which is downtown, and my office, which is in Clayton, so it works for us.” Since joining Glen Echo’s program, Rebekah and John have utilized the course frequently. “In the last three weeks since we’ve joined, we’ve played probably over a half a dozen times. I joined the 18-hole ladies league here and Districts, and I have already played in an event.” Rebekah plans on taking advantage of the other aspects of the course in the coming months. “My husband and I certainly use it quite a bit. We’ve also invited my folks here for dinner on the patio, and we hope to get the kids involved this summer.”

GOV. JEFF MOORE, MAC MEMBER SINCE 1996 “I joined because I had played several tournaments out here with the MAC’s Foundations’ Golf Tournament,” said Jeff. “I just love the course and the Olympic history so when the opportunity presented itself, I couldn’t wait to jump on board. I was nervous to miss out on the opportunity. Since joining, I’ve gotten a few rounds in, and it has just been awesome.” Jeff plans to use Glen Echo’s other amenities too. “My wife loves

to play tennis, and they have some great clay courts here so she can play tennis while I golf,” he said. “I have three girls. I hope they can utilize the pool, and then we can all enjoy some of that great food.” Joining the waitlist is something Jeff really encourages fellow MAC members to do. “There’s been a great group here and a lot of familiar faces within the 25 MAC members already here,” Jeff noted. “It’s also great for your confidence. For instance, I’m already 2-0 against Kevin Cantwell so it can make you feel good about your game.” Jeff feels strongly about growing this partnership. “Both clubs have such a tremendous, rich tradition of excellence, and I think any time you put two great clubs together like that, something good has to come out of it.”

N E X T ST E P S Within a short timeframe, all 25 program slots were filled, and a waiting list has been enacted. The MAC would like to know if a significant number of members are interested in this program. If so, this would spur further discussions with Glen Echo about how

to best accommodate the demand. If you are interested in learning more about the Glen Echo Full Membership program, or if you would like to be added to the wait list, contact Michael Gray at 314-539-4471 or mgray@mac-stl.org.

2018 WEDDING TRENDS

The MAC’s catering staff took notice of some new trends this wedding season. VIBRANT VIBES Couples are revolving their celebration around the “feel” or “vibe” of the big day rather than around a color palette. They determine what “style” wedding they want, which then dictates color choices, design and overall aesthetic. The Missouri Athletic Club has hosted quite a few weddings planned around themes. The Great Gatsby, 1920’s in general or vintage weddings are very popular. AN ALTERED ALTAR The traditional altar is becoming more contemporary with trends such as round archways or an almost closed circle to signify eternal love. Balloons are also becoming very popular as a new way to add a “wow” factor

to the reception space. Mylar options can be paired with regular latex balloons to create a mismatched, yet colorful and dramatic display. A whimsical trend that the MAC’s Catering Manager, Terri Lee, has recently started seeing are flower walls. “I’ve had a couple weddings where they’ve placed a wall made from flowers behind the head table at the reception or at the ceremony as a backdrop,” said Terri. “In one instance, they used one main flower as the predominant background and then the couple’s initials were laid out in a different color flower.” COLOR POP MAC Director of Catering, Linda Soncasie, shares that many of her weddings are leaning

away from the ever-popular blush and offwhite color palettes. “A lot of my couples are opting for brighter pops of color such as magenta and navy blue,” she said. ADDED FLAIR Some fun trends being added to receptions are Polaroid cameras for guests to use at their leisure. This is a great way to capture the evening in an out-of-the-box way. “It helps that they have such cute colors, too,” added Terri. Another popular trend added to receptions are late-night snacks that are available once dinner is long past and dancing has taken over the night. “St. Louis-themed snacks are a real favorite,” added Linda. WEST CLUBHOUSE FITNESS EXPANSION AND RENOVATION PROJECT process involved setting goals for the project and establishing a list of criteria to support those goals and measure each design against. From there, the committee evaluated the pros and cons of each design and graded it against the following criteria. The Club will release new drawings of the full design once finalized.

PROJECT GOALS F Improve member satisfaction and retention by providing the facilities and programs that align with member’s interest as outlined in the survey F Attract prospective members to the MAC’s state-of-the-art facility and top-notch, trending programs

PHASE ONE UNDERWAY

F Proactively address the Club’s needs for the next 3, 5, 10 years

Phase One of the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project is underway. Currently, the stadium racquetball court is under deconstruction to expand the weight room. Phase One will also include the addition of a yoga and barre studio.

F Uphold the MAC’s mission of being the premier athletic club in the St. Louis region

PHASE TWO DESIGN CONCEPT APPROVED

F Survey Results – Which design will best address member feedback from the survey?

At the May Board of Governors meeting, the Board approved a design concept for Phase Two. The design will include two racquetball courts, group exercise classrooms, rooms designated for cardio equipment, a spinning studio, and a properly-sized functional training room, which will have similarities to the newly renovated fitness spaces at the Downtown Clubhouse, a Pilates studio, youth areas, and hopefully a golf simulator as plans are finalized. A decision was made at this time to give the architect appropriate direction for moving forward with final designs and to acquire the necessary permits to keep the project timeline on track. To come to this decision, the Planning Committee followed a methodical process to make a recommendation to the Board. The

DESIGN CRITERIA

F Competition – Which design will best position the MAC to remain competitive in the marketplace? F Programming – Which design will best incorporate trending athletic and fitness programs? F Active Racquetball Members and Court Usage – Which design will best support our racquetball program? F Facility Standard – Which design will create the best ambiance for the Club by creating a state-of-the-art fitness center? F Long-Term Functional Layout – Which design will achieve the best functionality without any further renovations?

FITNESS tip

Diet programs are the topic of a lot of conversations. Whether it’s Ketogenic, paleo, intermittent fasting, or any other type of diet program, the best advice is to find something that works for your lifestyle; that is paramount for success. No single diet program will work for everyone and most people fail because they pick a diet program that doesn’t work with their lifestyle. Book a session with one of the MAC’s registered dietitians to help you design a personalized plan and set goals! Call Courtney Hutt (DT) at 314-539-4495 or David Vandeven (WE) at 314-704-1105.

Apollos CELEBRATE 75TH ANNIVERSARY

On April 27, the legendary Apollos celebrated their 75th anniversary at their spring concert. Themed around an old-time radio broadcast, the program paid tribute to the singing group and celebrated its longevity. A full orchestra accompanied the Apollos, and a Bob Hope skit was thrown in for some added excitement. During the evening, the Apollos performed “Annabel from Hannibal” and surprised Jan Burmeister who was in attendance. Jan’s father, Charlie Burmeister, sang this song at an earlier Apollos concert years ago. He and his son enjoyed carving figures, one being an Apollos plaque. Jan donated this plaque back to the MAC during the evening’s program in honor of her father’s legacy. See more photos on Facebook!

BEN KELLEY Ben Kelley is a St. Louis-based artist whose work has been featured at various local and international businesses. His most notable work is his Sunset painting, which graces the cover of a recent print of famed Dutch writer Nescio’s “Titaneller.” Concerning Ben’s style, he likes to mix it up a bit. “I feel the need to find new and better ways of expression through my work, and as a result, my paintings are typically comprised of several styles,” he says. “Often this results in richly-colored landscape motifs combined with expressionist and abstract elements. This fusion of styles is most apparent as paint drips, splatters, rich texture and abstract colors are combined with otherwise realistic scenery to better convey an emotion, experience or an idea.” To purchase any art on display, contact Janet Jones at extension 7430 or email jjones@mac-stl.org.
