PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

Well, the groundhog did not see his shadow so let’s hope to have more beautiful weekends like the one where we celebrated Good Fellowship Day in our immediate future. Hopefully, you had the opportunity to get out and taste the sunshine and balmy temperatures. I’d like to open this month’s column with a quick recap of the Foundations’ Gala from Feb. 13. Thank you to all who contributed, participated or attended this fantastic event. From the food stations and entertainment to the people and our MAC staff, everything was first class across the board. For those who could not attend, we gave special recognition to a few individuals who served as pioneers in helping to establish our foundations: Gerry Ortbals, Don Gunn and Kim Tucci. Thank you for making a lasting impact on the MAC. In conjunction with making an impact and the continued exposure of the MAC’s philanthropic efforts, we also recognized several members for their commitment to remembering the MAC and its foundations in their estate planning. Thank you Governor Bob Barnes, Brandon Dempsey, Past-Governor Kim DeMotte and Past-President Tom Albus. All of them will be inaugural members of the new Hall of Fame Society. Speaking of Hall of Fame, there’s still time to come down and attend our Hall of Fame dinner on Thursday evening, March 3, as we induct a new class of MAC legends. For those of you interested and committed to serving this wonderful club, letters of intent for Board of Governors nominations are due March 1 and the formal packets are due by 5 p.m. on March 7. Early last month, we elected the officers who will assume leadership of

the club in mid-May. Congratulations to our President-Elect Troy Robertson, 1st Vice President Tracy Beckette, 2nd Vice President Rebekah Bahn, Secretary Tripp Zumwalt and Treasurer Duffy Dunn. Later this month, the MAC Golf Club will hold its annual kickoff on March 30 with a star-studded field. In addition to the Golf Club, our golf program, the reciprocal clubs and ClubCorp, we’re pleased to announce that Maria Palozola has joined the MAC’s instructional staff. Maria, owner of St. Louis Golf Lessons, is one of the most respected instructors in the St. Louis golf community, and our members now have direct access to her expertise at discounted rates. See page 19 for more information. I mentioned ClubCorp above. For those not aware, this is an amazing club amenity, particularly for the member that travels. This network of facilities and destinations is impressive, and we’re currently in an open enrollment period where the $5,000 initiation fee is waived. To learn more, please see page 9. A few other items to consider as we head into March: the club is offering fish and seafood specials on Friday evenings at both clubhouses during the Lenten season. We’ll also host an Easter Egg Hunt at the West Clubhouse on March 26, followed by our traditional Easter Brunch at the Downtown Clubhouse on March 27. We have some spring break sports camps on deck for the kids this month and summer camp registration is open to members only through April 22. A couple of weeks ago, during the filming of an upcoming video release, I had the opportunity to take a close-up look at the progress of our 1903 bar project at the West Clubhouse, as well as the adjacent lobby and dining room renovations. I am very pleased to announce that 1903 remains both on time and on budget with an expected opening in May. I cannot express enough how excited I am to see this project finally underway with some tangible and visual success and with spring and pool season looming. This project was in discussion from the first day I joined the Board, and it’s expected to be completed shortly before I step away. See you at the Club.

Robertson works as a sales associate for Coldwell Banker Gundaker and lives in Kirkwood, Mo. with his wife, Tressa, and their two sons Trey and Hunter. Robertson will succeed President Brent Kaniecki. The other four newly-elected officers are E. GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

The patio will have a special “al fresco“ feel with a menu to match. In general, according to Chef Grant, the new food and drink offerings will offer a more local and seasonal approach. The entrees and appetizers will be classified as “New American Cuisine” with hints, tastes, and sub-

More than a hundred years ago, prior to 1903, the Missouri Athletic Club was simply someone’s idea, a concept, possibly even a dream. Today, it’s a club with two locations that’s growing and expanding. Similarly, something that was discussed over drinks a few years ago is quickly becoming the place to get a drink. Beam by beam, brick by brick a structure has come up from the ground and 1903 is coming to life in a big way. If you haven’t been to the West Clubhouse lately, you need to go check out the progress, or at the very least, login to the website to view the construction from our webcam that’s documenting the project. It will undoubtedly get you excited. From the inside out, the dining room and lobby have been gutted in preparation for a new décor that will flow seamlessly into the new bar. 1903 will have the decadent look and feel of a preprohibition old world clubhouse bar. Think dark woods and rich leathers bathed in a warm color scheme while enjoying a handcrafted shaken cocktail by the warm crackling fire during these winter months. Then, during the warmer months, weather permitting; we will have a splendid patio with a stunning view of the pool.

tleties of different culinary fusions the world over. The menu will adjust often as the season changes to incorporate the local farms’ produce. We’re also incorporating some very local craft beer. Our brew master, Chef Grant, has setup a small microbrewery onsite at the West Clubhouse and has been crafting some tasty concoctions for you to sample. Until we are fully licensed to brew beer, we will have nights of the week where there will be a free beer of the evening accompanied with some fun and creative charcuteries, cheeses, and a variety of pickled vegetables. The 190-Free brew! Along with many of you, I sampled some of his unique creations at the Foundations’ Gala, and they were fantastic. Stay alert for food-tasting opportunities. In the words of Chef Grant, “Your feedback and support is paramount to the success of 1903.” I want to pause to touch on the gala, which was a truly incredible event, and reiterate the theme of the evening, which was “thank you” to the individuals who support our foundations and the MAC. Along that line, I want to extend a shout out to Chris Hyams and Tripp Zumwalt and Tom Dankenbring, Aaron Pawlitz and Dean Eggerding who combined purchased two pre-opening parties at 1903 for 20 guests. Similarly, Mark Belew, Joel Karsten, John Bugh, Scott Engelbrecht, John Carroll, Tim Shocklee, Cheri McLaughlin, Steve

Krause, Mike Schoedel, and Dean Eggerding combined purchased four two-hour happy hours for 12 people at 1903 prior to the opening. Thank you all for your generosity and ongoing support. These private pre-opening parties are sure to be a great time as we present out new exciting dining and drinking concepts. President-Elect Robertson and Governors Zumwalt, Hyams and Dunn also deserve a huge thank you for their oversight of this project. They’ve done a tremendous job of executing an idea that’s been in development for years. From the survey we commissioned in 2012 to many conversations during the last few years, members were voicing a strong desire for an “adult space” at the West Clubhouse for business and socializing. Multiple boards over the past 2-3 years deliberated over this project, and now the request is being fulfilled and coming to life! Financial plans and architectural plans were drawn up, construction is underway, and we’re on schedule and on budget for the launch to coincide with the pool opening in May. Saving the best for last, thank you MAC members for supporting this project. It truly could not happen without you. We’re on the tail end of your ten-month investment. However, it’s still not too late to sponsor a new member to waive the remaining months. Additionally, in just a few short months, we’ll have this new premier amenity for you to share with them. Cheers! See you at the club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club Cherry Diamond F MARCH 2016 F 7

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

»

Member Spotlight: Doug Drysdale Doug Drysdale, a long-time member, shares his influential role in the club by sponsoring the Saint Louis Priory School’s Father Son Banquet for the last three years. CD: How long have you been a member of the MAC?

CD: How have you utilized the club since joining?

DD: I have been a member of the MAC for almost 25 years, including a number of years while living in London and Chicago.

DD: : For me, the MAC is distinguished from other athletic and social clubs by the ease of hosting flawless events large and small and the convenience of differencemaking professional fitness instruction always available at both clubhouses. Rob Scheer introduced me to efficient and effective cross-fit training at the Downtown Clubhouse a few years ago, and I remain one of Rob’s regulars on Mondays and Fridays. Since then, I have joined Joy Holdmeier’s spirited group at the West Clubhouse on Wednesdays and everything our new Fitness Manager, Courtney Hutt, offers at the Downtown Clubhouse. Many more professional trainers, nutrition experts, and fitness instructors are on-staff at both locations. Our members have responded to these quality MAC fitness opportunities, and I believe our MAC leadership team is committed to continuing to invest in fitness.

CD: Have you held any events at the club? If so, why did you choose the MAC? DD: For the last three years, I have sponsored Saint Louis Priory School’s Father Son Banquet at the Downtown Clubhouse. Our first year we hosted 350 people, last year was over 400, and this year nearly 500 fathers, sons, and monks attended making it an all-time Priory record. There is no better place in town to host a large event. Our MAC team and Missouri Ballroom shine brightest at the biggest moments. Although my son graduates from Priory this spring and my term as Fathers’ Club President ends, I look forward to sponsoring Priory Father Son Banquets here for many more years. Priory has found a home at the MAC.

Enroll in the ClubCorp program starting March 30 and save $5,000 by foregoing the initiation fee. What is ClubCorp? The ClubCorp network is an elite collection of private golf and country clubs, business clubs, and resorts across the country and around the world.

CD: Have you brought any new members to the club? What advice would you give to fellow members in their recruitment efforts? DD: I have brought new members to the MAC and two years ago began a Platinum Partnership with Frank Van Bree, CEO of UrbanFuture. Frank has been a vibrant addition to the MAC and immediately started hosting UrbanFuture’s annual March Madness charity fundraiser extravaganza in the Missouri Ballroom. As far as advice, we are in the Show-Me State so just show the club to others. The MAC makes a statement all its own! See page 28 for a recap of the St. Louis Priory Father Son Banquet!

More Than

Camaraderie, social events, dining, private events,

The Missouri Athletic Club is more than just an athletic facility. Greg Lindsay and George and Kerri Van Antwerp second that statement. These members shared their stories with the Cherry Diamond on how their guest experiences bloomed into membership thanks to the club’s social events, family-oriented opportunities and club camaraderie.

Greg Lindsay Greg Lindsay joined the club in 2012 after a great guest experience in the basketball league. CD: Tell us about your first MAC experience as a member’s guest. GL: I knew it was something I wanted to be part of right away. I felt as if I had been a member for 10 years when I would talk with everyone. Every member I interacted with told me they really enjoyed being a part of the MAC and that they wish they would have joined sooner. I took their word for it. CD: What made you decide to become a member? GL: I was really looking for a place to play basketball at a higher level with great competition while also being able to build friendships with those same guys. It’s not easy to find quality basketball with great 16 F Cherry Diamond F MARCH 2016

people in the St. Louis area. The benefit to joining the MAC was that I could get all of that in one place. CD: How long have you been a member? GL: I have been a member since fall of 2012. CD: Basketball was the primary reason you joined the MAC. Now that you’re a member, what other aspects of the club do you enjoy? GL: Throughout my years as a member so far, I have become much closer to individuals on and off the court and have developed great friendships and business relation-

ships. Although I haven’t joined any Clubs Within the Club yet that is on my list. I want to take advantage of everything that I haven’t tapped into yet. CD: What advice would you give to other members who regularly invite guests to the MAC? GL: If you talk about the fun culture of the club and the great camaraderie that exists here, people will want to join and be part of something like that. What stood out to me was that everyone got along and that it almost seemed like a brotherhood. If there is any advice I’d give, it’d be to expose as many people as you can to the club! I made the right decision in joining.

George and Kerrie Van Antwerp Following a wonderful guest experience in the junior tennis program, the Van Antwerp family recently joined the MAC. CD: Tell us about your first MAC experience with the Junior Tennis program. Why did you choose the MAC’s program as opposed to other options? VA: When we first came to the MAC last January we were very impressed with the facilities at the West Clubhouse. A facility with eight courts, a pro shop and fitness center all in one place was fantastic, and the wonderful Stan Musial Grille was an added bonus. We chose the MAC tennis program because they are dedicated to junior players at all levels, and the program offers clinics, weekly match play, agility training and mental toughness. CD: What made you decide to become a member? VA: We decided to become members once we realized that both of our children were interested in participating in the junior tennis program. Since we essentially

doubled our time at the West Clubhouse with both kids in the program, we felt that we could also use the fitness center and gym while the kids were playing tennis. CD: How long have you been a member? VA: We joined in January of this year so just over a few months. CD: Tennis brought you to the MAC. Now that you’re a member, what other aspects of the club have you enjoyed? VA: We have enjoyed dining at the West Clubhouse and look forward to the opening of 1903. I would like to join the Lunch & Tour Group for an outing, and once the weather warms up, we would like to participate in the Golf Club. We recently participated in the Parent/Child Tennis Tournament, which is always a great night of fun with the kids.

CD: What advice would you give to other members who regularly invite guests to the MAC? VA: Our advice would be to include the whole family when inviting guests to the MAC. Whether it’s for a family dinner, Easter Brunch or a day at the pool, I think it is important for all family members to feel like the MAC is their club. One of the things that stood out to me was all of the activity on the weekends. You will see kids playing, parents exercising and families enjoying a meal together.

The Cherry Diamond wants to know more about your membership experience. Have you used ClupCorp or our reciprocal clubs? If so, contact efrey@mac-stl.org to share your story.

Weight Loss Challenges Launches a Transformational Journey The enthusiasm to tackle New Year’s resolutions usually wanes as the year progresses and many struggle to find the motivation or willpower to continue. MAC member Cindy Curtis is inspiring and a perfect example of the hard work it takes to achieve a weight loss goal. She thanks her personal trainer, MAC registered and licensed dietitian David Vandeven, for the incredible goals she has achieved thus far in her journey. Curtis’ professional relationship with Vandeven started in January of 2015 as part of the annual MAC Weight Loss Challenge. Vandeven conducted an assessment of Curtis’ current eating habits, health status and wellness goals as well as created a three-day meal plan custom-designed to her caloric needs for weight loss. They met again in February, March and April to discuss her weight loss progress and make adjustments to her eating plan. Then again, in August, they met to discuss her progress. At this point, Curtis made the decision to appoint Vandeven her personal trainer and nutrition plan guide. Since then, they have worked out at least once each week and have met several more times to discuss and refine her eating plan. Currently, Curtis has ramped up her exercise routine to three weight training sessions per week, three yoga classes per week and added daily exercise on a stationary bicycle. Curtis attributes her success to Vandeven’s constant encouragement and motivation, and his request for her to repeatedly look inward at her compliance with the plan. Vandeven also emphasizes the importance of getting enough sleep and encourages Curtis to focus on moving forward toward her goal. To-date, Curtis is 45 pounds lighter. Both individuals

have decided to continue to work together until Curtis meets her goal, which Vandeven continually says is possible. Failure is not an option. Curtis plans to achieve her goal weight by Dec. 9 of this year. Curtis admires Vandeven’s tenacity and constant devotion to her weight loss goals. “As second-generation club members, my family and I have, over the years, developed high expectations of service excellence from club employees,” notes Curtis. “David exceeds even these expectations in both what he does and how he interacts with us. My first interaction with David was through the nutrition and physical training of my young adult son. David was professionally supportive, caring and encouraging, building a trusting relationship with my son and producing outstanding results. As a mother, one cannot ask for a greater gift than a person like David entering their child’s life and making such a positive impact. David’s impact on our family continues with my own wellness interactions. At the beginning of 2015, I started seeing David for nutritional counseling and eventually added strength training with him. David’s professionalism appealed to me with his credentials and through his application of that knowledge.”

Stillman Street Alexander Valley Chardonnay 2014 This wine is crafted from 100% estate-grown fruit from Alexander Valley’s acclaimed Stuhlmuller Vineyard. Planted in a well-drained, sandy loam section of the vineyard, these grapes come from the famed Gauer clone, which is known for its pear and spice notes. Aromas: Filled with orchard fruit aromas of Anjou pear and golden delicious apples, this wine has notes of citrus oil and honeysuckle. Tasting Note: On the palate, the pear and apple flavors continue alongside layers of peach and ripe grapefruit. Along with its pure fruit flavors, this 2014 vintage displays a creamy texture with hints of oak-inspired vanilla and enticing spice.

Huber Estate Heritage 2010 Red Wine Heritage is a robust blend of some of our finest barrel-aged red wine. It’s blended primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. All are barrel-aged for 11-14 months. CSC’s Impact on St. Louis Community Grows $32,929.29 in checks presented to three local charities The MAC’s Charitable Society for Children (CSC) is a Club Within the Club that annually collects and donates money to three local children’s charities. This year marks the 11th anniversary of the CSC and the organization has increased its donations since its inception thanks to club members and employees who contribute. Since its inception in 2005, the organization has donated $237,343.45 to 33 St. Louis area children’s charities. Governors Bob Barnes, Rebekah Bahn and Tracy Beckette presented three checks each equaling $10,976.43 to Coat-a-Kid, Inc., The Maren Fund and Sweet Babies for a grand total of $32,929.29 on January 22. Throughout the night, attendees enjoyed dinner, camaraderie and dancing, thanks to an outstanding Beatles cover band, Les Beat.

“What a wonderful event. The dance floor was busy all night and the band offered a great sound just like The Beatles. All the charities were so happy at the donation amounts, and Sweet Babies told me that that was the biggest check they had ever received.” – Marie Salter

Salant grew up in Chesterfield, Mo. Her grandfather was a sculpture artist and her father was an avid art collector. While other kids were spending the weekends playing tetherball and foursquare, she was either on a road trip to New York City galleries or at the Saint Louis Art Museum where her mother was a docent. This is where Salant learned to appreciate tone, light, color, texture, and style. Salant learned to appreciate more avant garde and surreal art in works by Salvador Dali and Alexander Calder and color with August Renoir. Her love for black and white photography and landscapes come from her favorite photographer, Ansel Adams. Over the years, the artist dappled in drawing but found her true calling in photography and alcohol ink. Most of Salant’s education developed in a darkroom at the University of Missouri Journalism School of Photojournalism. This is where she learned the importance of a picture to tell a story or convey an emotion, the same way that her poetry does. The alcohol ink paintings are organic in nature and a brush is just for blending the colors with rubbing alcohol. The paint flows naturally over a nonporous surface as she picks up the hardboard and angles and dips it in different directions. It is only after she sees how the ink flows that she determines what to paint and where. To purchase any work on display, contact Morgan Franke at 314-539- 4438 or mfranke@mac-stl.org.
