Employee Appreciation In March, the Missouri Athletic Club will recognize our great employees at our annual Employee Service Awards dinner. This has become my favorite Board event of the year. It’s so fun to see the employees cut loose in a social setting. It’s their night to eat, drink, enjoy each other’s company, and celebrate their achievements. It’s a blast. A few years back while attending the dinner it occurred to me that these folks aren’t simply employees at the Club where I belong. Rather they are valued team members that contribute to the Club’s greatness. More importantly, our employees are part of the fabric of my life—of all of our lives—as MAC members. For years, I lived downtown on Washington Avenue in the loft district. For all of those years, the first person I would see every morning (after my wife) was Don Rushing at the fifth floor athletic desk. It never ceases to amaze me thinking about Don’s steadfast reliability. He is at his post every morning at 5 a.m. and hasn’t missed a day of work in the past four years! Perfect attendance at 5 a.m. for four years; try duplicating that. It was always so pleasant to see Don in the morning and have him greet me with, “Good morning, Mr. Robertson.” Now, that’s great service. That’s a personal touch. That’s the difference between a private platinum club experience and any old gym where you are just a customer. I have the same experience now that I workout at the West Clubhouse. I see the welcoming faces of Carrie and Maria in the Pro Shop every morning. It’s slightly different from seeing Don though because Maria usually tries (and succeeds) to get me to buy the newest Pro Shop item. From there, I’m always greeted with a warm hello from Mary at the fitness desk

and a couple fist bumps from Paul and Jesse as I start my workout. When done, I get to see Debbie’s lovely smile. She expertly handles the Stan Musial Grille in the morning. Her positive energy is infectious. It genuinely gives me an extra bounce in my step as I head off to work. How do you put a value on something like that!?! These uplifting interactions happen throughout the day whether its Brian at the West Clubhouse’s buffet for lunch or Miss Betty and Connie on the fourth floor downtown alongside Mark behind the bar. That rolls into dinner with Debbie, Cindy, Kelly and the whole team in the Jack Buck Grille or at the West Clubhouse with Darrin, John, Neiko, and company. The point isn’t that we have great, dependable employees—that’s a given—the point is that these employees become part of our lives. I always feel like I owe it to them to express how thankful I am for their service and for “taking care of me and my family.” It’s a true blessing to be part of the MAC family in that way. The employees pictured here are just a few that I see on a daily basis. There are literally hundreds more. Who do you see on a regular basis that helps strengthen your MAC experience? If you’re anything like me there are several that fill the bill. Please take a moment to thank them today. The Board of Governors will celebrate them at a special dinner in March, but I hope we all appreciate them for making our MAC experience a truly special one. In service,

Troy Robertson, President Missouri Athletic Club Follow me @Macpres101 on Twitter.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

About mid-February, our membership survey consultant hand-delivered a nearly 900-page document containing the results of the membership survey. He has been in the industry more than 40 years, and he said our survey was the longest he has ever seen! Because of that, he admitted that he had been initially skeptical about the results that we would see. However, we impressed him when more than 50% of the memberships’ households responded to the survey! This great response makes the responses applicable across the membership so we truly have an accurate picture of what’s important to you, which is fantastic and exactly what we were hoping to achieve! Now, the challenge is going through these 900 pages and identifying key initiatives and prioritizing them, which your strategic planning committee will be working on throughout the next few months. So, there will be more to come, including a summary of the results. However, I want to share with you a little bit of relevant

6 F Cherry Diamond F MARCH 2017

»

information that our consultant shared with the strategic planning committee and senior staff. First, it’s obvious that one of the MAC’s strengths is our wide range of offerings that attract and retain different members. Not everything is for everybody, and that’s okay, but there is definitely something for everyone. On that note, for our golfers, I am excited to share that we recently developed another partnership with a local golf course - Sunset Hills Country Club in Edwardsville, Ill. Check out page 11 and the website for more information. Now, as a MAC member, you have the privilege of golfing at five local country clubs, not including the reciprocal and ClubCorp clubs nationwide. See page 9 for more info about ClubCorp and sign up while the initiation fee is waived. Secondly, I want to take a moment to brag on our staff. As President Robertson mentions in his column, in March, we recognize our outstanding staff at a truly fun dinner, and they deserve to be praised. In every category throughout the survey, the staff consistently ranked the highest compared to all other amenities and services the Club offers, which is such a testament to our exceptional people. They really are a key element of the Club that makes us Platinum. As President Robertson mentions there are many awesome employees that you interact with every time you’re at the Club, and they’re part of your great Platinum experience. But there are also a number of incredible people behind the scenes who you may never have the need or opportunity to know, but who also ensure that you have a

Platinum Club experience. To name just a few: Robert Belts has been an integral part of our housekeeping staff at the West Clubhouse since 2001; Rodney Dear, one of our housemen, pictured below cleaning our Missouri Ballroom, has been part of our staff since 1990. Malika Elisova joined our housekeeping team in 2014, and she had perfect attendance last year. We were proud to support her becoming a U.S. citizen last year! Our Director of Human Resources, Chris Maurer, who hires all of these great staff members, celebrated 20 years with the MAC in 2016! Brian Staton, who is a valuable part of our kitchen staff at the West Clubhouse, has been with the MAC since 1995. Some of you may recognize our outgoing Debbie Valloni, the Office Manger at our West Clubhouse who keeps so much running behind the scenes. I could go on and on from our Accounting staff to our IT Department to our chefs and dishwashers so many of them deserve public recognition for their incredible service, and I look forward to celebrating them in March! One thing that they all have in common is being service-oriented. Meaning, they enjoy serving you and making your day and your experience great. As our survey results show, it’s awesome to know that you feel their love for the Club. I’m looking forward to delving into the rest of your feedback. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Foundations ’ Gala

On Feb. 10, the annual Foundations’ Gala took place at the Downtown Clubhouse. More than 250 members attended the elegant evening of cocktails, red carpet photos, themed food stations, music by the Charles Glenn Group and live and silent auctions. The night was full of gratitude to those who had donated to the foundations and those who became planned givers. Attendees also learned how foundation monies were utilized in the past year. Over $13,000 was raised through the silent auction and $47,000 was raised through the live auction. PHOTO CREDITS: DAY 1 PHOTO; FREYTOGRAPHY

HAL BALL STANDS WITH HIS MEDAL BESIDE THE FINISH LINE.

Member Hal Ball Competes in Bermuda Swim On Oct. 9, MAC member Hal Ball competed in the 10-kilometer (6.3 mile) “Round the Sound” open water swim race in Bermuda. His time of three hours, 26 minutes placed him 48th out of 81 swimmers. Ball was hoping to finish closer to three hours, but the remnants of Hurricane Matthew made the water choppy and slowed the racers down. Last year, Ball swam the five-mile “Back to Back” Race in St. Croix and finished 22nd out of 88 swimmers. “I started to feel like I was losing my mojo when I saw how I placed,” said Ball, “until I talked to the woman next to me who had just swam the English Channel three weeks earlier, and the woman next to her swam around Manhattan in the spring. I did not feel so bad after that.” Ball encourages anyone who likes to swim to try an ocean race and to call him for details at 314-781-0001.

Fitness Tip Ditch the floor crunches! Some of the best abdominal exercises are mountain climbers, planks, and burpees. That’s right, burpees! Instead of doing an endless number of crunches, try these exercises. Not only is it a great ab workout, but a great whole-body workout as well!

Fifteen members are participating in the Weight Loss Challenge, which began Jan. 9 and ends on March 27. The winner will be the member who loses the largest percentage of weight and the combined team with the largest percentage of weight lost. Host it Here!

RENDEZVOUS ROOM, DOWNTOWN CLUBHOUSE

The MAC’s catering department shines bright as members rave about their event experiences at their Club.

Joe Ambrose has been hosting events at the Missouri Athletic Club since 1985. Back in the early years of his membership, Ambrose held two to four events at the Club per year, but with the recent addition of the 1903 bar, he’s held additional events there. “1903 has given me several options for small to medium-sized gatherings whether in the bar or dining room,” he says. Ambrose notes that there’s really no one factor that drives his decision of where to host his events, but that both clubhouses present themselves well and the ambiance and convenience are key factors. “However,” he says, “that wouldn’t matter if the staff wasn’t topflight and made our guests feel welcome. The food is phenomenal and Chef

Higgs and his staff are always looking for the opportunity to take the dining experience to the next level. I have never had a bad experience or wish I had gone elsewhere. The venue, service level and quality of food are consistently top quality.” Ease of guests and comfort are top priorities at the Club, and Ambrose agrees. “My guests always feel comfortable and welcome at the MAC. I have received numerous compliments on the staff, facilities and food from my guests and several have looked into membership following our events,” he notes. “In particular, 1903 rates high on the ‘wow’ factor with my guests. There isn’t anything to compare it to in the area and my guests always ask for a return visit. (And it isn’t just because I’m picking up the tab!)” When asked why MAC members should choose the MAC for their events, Ambrose hits the point home. “I think the venue I choose for an event reflects upon me and the regard I hold for my guests. The MAC makes the statement that I value the relationship I have with them.”

STEPHEN GROSS OF NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL Joining the Club only a little more than a year ago, Stephen Gross wasted no time hosting his company meetings at the MAC. “We hold our monthly meetings at the Club, usually beginning in the Missouri Room and breaking out into smaller groups after,” says Gross. “We also hold weeklong trainings here as well. Although I’ve only been holding events at the Club for a year or so, I’ve attended meetings at the MAC for 20 years; my wife and I actually had our wedding reception at the Downtown Clubhouse 25 years ago.” Accommodations and quality of service are at the top of the list for why Gross chose the MAC. “The accommodations are fantastic and allow us to hold large meetings, small breakouts,

‘‘

There is not another venue that knows and cares about event details like the MAC. It is my go-to choice for any event. — Melenie Broyles, Etiquette St. Louis or anything in-between,” he notes. “The quality and service of the MAC staff is above anything else we’ve seen when hosting meetings at other locations; they are attentive, friendly and responsive. We never have any problems when hosting our events at the MAC. The preparation with the MAC staff before the meeting and execution day-of happens flawlessly.” Gross leaves with this sentiment. “Very rarely do you come across a group where the service – from the moment you book the event, to the day of the event, and the followthrough afterwards – is always exceptional.”

Melenie Broyles founded Etiquette St. Louis, an organization that teaches etiquette classes for kids, adults and corporate groups. Broyles, who has been a MAC member with her husband for five-and-a-half years, holds 20 plus events at the Club annually. These events range from corporate etiquette dinners, parties and training, cotillions, etiquette classes, teas and more. From Broyles point of view, it’s safe to say that she’s held approximately 100 events at the Club since day one. Broyles says that she opted for the MAC as the venue for her events simply because of the top-notch staff. “They are truly the best in the business,” she says. “The quality, settings, food, and attention to detail are far superior to other options. The staff understands that my events focus on etiquette, and they work to make them fun and memorable for my guests.” Another aspect that Broyles likes about the Club’s staff is that they can handle details that are specific to her business. “I love coming in and hearing a staff member handle a detail that is important to my business because they have been trained, and they understand the nature of

knowing the guests,” she says. “I even have staff stop by and say hello when they are not working my event.” When asked if she has ever received good feedback from her guests at MAC events, Broyles is swift to reply. “Occasionally, I will have a guest/client want an event that is located closer to their home. And usually when this happens, someone else will step up and say that the MAC is worth the drive due to the wonderful food and service. I love the opportunity for clients to see the Club and experience its excellence. I have had quite a few inquire about membership and even have had some join.” Lastly, Broyles hits the point home that hosting an event at the Club is not just simply hosting an event. “It is our Club so it truly feels like you are hosting an event at your home away from home,” she notes. “There is not another venue that knows and cares about event details like the MAC. It is my go-to choice for any event.”

adhered to. Deviating from the order or neglecting to check a box leads to points being deducted from your overall score – and it’s all about the points. There are 45 steps involved when deciphering a wine and during a testing scenario you are given a flight of six wines, three white and three red, and are allotted four minutes and 10 seconds for each wine. At the end of this time, you must determine vintage, grape variety, country of origin, region and appellation. What makes it even more fun (insert sarcasm) is that you are doing it all aloud in front of a panel of six Master Sommeliers. Last August, I passed my Certified (the second level) and was elated to have it done and completed. The Advanced level is markedly more difficult and, therefore, requires an aspiring Certified to complete a course before ever being considered for the actual exam. Seeing as there are so many applicants in the field vying for the opportunity move up in The Court the vetting process to be considered is rather extensive and often people are waitlisted anywhere from 12 to 18 months. For kicks, I thought I’d apply, take the knowledge survey, and get on a waitlist. Thus giving me time to study at my leisure all while holding my place in line. Well, I was accepted so there will be no rest for me. This June, I will be attending the Advanced Course in Dallas, Texas. In preparation, I thought it would be fun to do a series of Deductive Tasting Workshops with the membership. I have had a lot of you show immense interest in this process so I will put together some dates and times beginning in April to host groups and break down the methods used. I know you all might not be interested in the testing aspect of these exercises but building this skillset will allow you to better understand what types, styles and regions you most prefer to drink and why. Check out next month’s edition of the Cherry Diamond for the dates I will be posting for these workshops.

Dine in the Jack Buck Grille during the months of March, April and May and enjoy these wines by the glass or by the bottle. $11 per glass ✦ $42 per bottle Ghost Pines 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon The fruit for the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon came from a selection of vineyards within Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys in Sonoma County, from the Ghost Pines and Sage Canyon Vineyards in Napa County, and from the rugged Snows Lake Vineyard in Lake County. Combining vineyard lots from similar regions in the winter and spring, then blending the different regions together during the summer months creates the final blend. Tasting Notes: The Ghost Pines Cabernet Sauvignon is rich and concentrated with notes of blackberry and dark cherry. Aromas of vanilla, brown spice and toasted nuts lead to a palate with dark berry flavors. Combining desirable mid-palate viscosity and full, round mouthfeel, the Cabernet concludes with outstanding length accented by mouth-filling black fruit.

Laguna 2014 Chardonnay The grapes for Laguna Chardonnay were harvested and immediately whole-cluster pressed. Small lots were taken by taste to maximize the flavor of each particular block or clone and to ensure balance in the finished wine. The juice was cold settled, then racked off heavy lees and sent directly to barrel for fermentation at ambient cellar temperature. This Chardonnay was aged sur lie, giving the finished wine richness and a delicate nutty characteristic. Tasting Notes: The Laguna Chardonnay features delicate flavors of crisp apple, ripe pear and juicy tangerine, framed by notes of quince and Asian spice. It is well-balanced and rich with just a hint of creaminess.

BUILDING

for the Future

Investing in structural and aesthetic improvements for both commercial and residential properties paves the way for a successful future. The Missouri Athletic Club is a prime example. Within the past year, the Missouri Athletic Club has made both functional and aesthetic improvements with the addition and renovation of the 1903 bar and dining space at the West Clubhouse, and structural/operational renovations such as the new energyefficient HVAC system installed at the Downtown Clubhouse. The newly renovated childcare facility at the West Clubhouse is the latest improvement

that the Club has recently completed. The space has been totally redesigned and decorated with bright colors and whimsical artwork. (See photos from these projects on the next page.) Leadership views these projects as investing in the Club’s future, and the same long-term mindset can be applied to basic home improvements. CHEAP IS NOT ALWAYS THE BEST

RAID THE CONTRACTOR’S SOURCES

If the renovation project involves the kitchen, set up a small cooking space away from the construction. Make sure to include a microwave and fridge so that light meals can be easily prepared while the kitchen is under construction.

Utilizing cheaper materials may not always save money in the long run. Use durable products and one that will last. Purchasing more expensive paint may save time and money by only needing one coat versus multiple coats of paint. Adding value to the home should be of utmost importance. Check online for good deals on quality materials.

For things such as flooring, ask the contractor if they have anything left over from previous jobs, which would otherwise go straight to the trash. This could save thousands of dollars.

FOCUS ON TIMELY PROJECTS

LONG-TERM COSTS VS. SHORT-TERM GAINS

Some home improvement projects are more urgent than others. Perhaps investing in a new roof is more important than new kitchen cabinets.

Take into account long-term costs, not just short-term gains. Opt for the pre-primed and pre-painted clapboard siding, which is a bit more expensive, but will, in the long run, cut down the number of future paint jobs by half. Looking further down the road and planning wisely can be better longterm instead of opting for whatever is cheapest.

downs of a renovation project up front makes the entire process easier.

MAKE A POP-UP KITCHEN

BE INSPIRED Look for inspiration online for fantastic ideas that could be implemented in your project. Pinterest is a wonderful resource as well as This Old House, BHG, Houzz and many more.

LET IT BE Avoid moving permanent fixtures such as toilets or sinks since this is one of the most expensive aspects of a home improvement project. If a new layout does requires this, then take advantage of it and update the pipes at the same time. This will save money in the long run.

UTILIZE AUCTIONS Take advantage of building-supply auctions. These are fantastic ways to nab pieces for projects at very low costs. For example, the cost of a solid-cherry wall cabinet at a home center is $300. The very same item at a building supply auction is $10.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN WITH THE FOREVER YOUNG CLUB:

Eagle Watching

A late January day found the FYC in pursuit of American bald eagles at Lock and Dam 24 on the Mississippi River in Clarksville, Mo. Eagles were soaring in the sky and fishing at the dam along with more than a few gulls, a surprising discovery. Telescopes and binoculars at the visitor’s center gave everyone a close view of the nation’s bird. Clarksville, named after William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and founded on the western bank of the Mississippi in 1817, predates Missouri statehood by four years. The group visited one of the oldest homes, the magnificently restored Elgin-Cottrell House, dating back to 1845 and built out of clay by Hezekiah Elgin. Another interesting experience was the Windsor Chair Factory where sturdy chairs are constructed by hand using original methods from the 1700’s. A big surprise awaited at the back of the shop – a large chair in the process of being built as a gift for President Donald Trump. The FYC group finds surprises wherever they go!
