PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

May is a great time to be in St. Louis and experiencing all of the exciting things taking place at the Missouri Athletic Club. By May, everyone is ready for outdoor activities and the excitement of the coming summer. Make sure to mark your calendars for some great upcoming events at the MAC. Certainly, we all need to thank our wonderful mothers so remember to reserve a table for a special MAC Mother’s Day Brunch at either the Downtown or West Clubhouses on May 10. In addition, if you’re still looking for a Mother’s Day gift, give mom an opportunity to relax by purchasing a massage gift card. Massage gift certificates are available for members only at the front desk of both clubhouses in one hour or half hour denominations. Pool season arrives in May with the Opening Day Pool Party at the West Clubhouse on May 23. The pool opens at 10 a.m. followed by food and drink specials from 12-3 p.m. If you can’t make it to the Opening Day Pool party, plan to attend the Umbrella Drink Night at the West Clubhouse pool on June 20. Finally, one other May event reminder is the Father/Daughter Banquet on May 20. The Father/Son event in April was an excellent event, and the Father/Daughter Banquet is always a great time. The event is held at the Downtown Clubhouse and includes dinner, dancing and carriage rides so call to make your reservation. May also marks the Club’s Board of Governors election on May 6 and 7. The election night experience on May 7 is something everyone should check out. It is a very fun night as we elect five new individuals to represent the members on the Board of Governors. Please see pages 10-12 for detailed information on each candidate. Thanks to past-presidents Joel Karsten and John Bugh and the rest of the Nominating Committee for putting together a strong slate of candidates. I look forward to welcoming the incoming class to the Board.

With a new class coming in, it means another class is going out. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Board representing our members these last three years. I want to give a big thank you to my classmates, Greg Beekman, John Salter, John Noce and Kim DeMotte. They have all been invaluable assets to the Board, and each has been extremely successful in helping to accomplish many things as true leaders for the MAC. They all have a true passion for the MAC and take a vested interest in its success. Please join me in thanking these fine gentlemen. In addition, I gladly pass the reins of President to Brent Kaniecki, and I am very confident in his leadership for the MAC. Brent has an awesome team of officers to assist him so I congratulate them all and wish them and the rest of the Board continued success in the future. Lastly, I say thank you to Wally Smith for his leadership at the MAC. He sets the bar high for himself and the staff, and he has some awesome goals for the MAC to meet. It has been an honor to work closely with Wally during the last year, and I am excited to see where he will continue to lead the MAC in the future. To wrap up, last month, I mentioned that the Board has been working on a project and to be on the lookout for more information. Now, I want to share a little more. The Board has agreed to move forward with two projects that we feel are vital to our Downtown and West facilities. The Downtown project will focus on long needed infrastructure improvements, and the West project will improve the bar and social experience. Many Board members and non-board members have been involved in the planning and evaluation of these projects, and I thank each of them for their time and energies as these have been vetted out in various capacities over a number of years. More information and details will come this summer. Thank you to all of my fellow MAC members for making this such a special place. I love the MAC, and I have been honored to lead it as President. The MAC has been a staple in my family for multiple generations, and I look forward to seeing continued success here. See you around the Club!

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

»

They say the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, and the second best time is today. That is exactly how we are viewing this long-term initiative, which will pay dividends for future generations and the ongoing viability of the MAC. Past columns have alluded to several projects that we have in the works, and I’m eager to share with you three initiatives related to the past, present, and future of the Missouri Athletic Club that our Board of Governors recently approved. First, in relation to our past, we are moving forward with the city’s “Set the Pace St. Louis” program that I briefly mentioned last month. PACE is a green energy initiative that actually aligns perfectly with the mission of our Preservation Foundation. By upgrading the Downtown Clubhouse’s historic HVAC systems to be more energy efficient, our utility and operating costs will be significantly reduced. The savings generated will actually cover the expense of the project and create positive cash flow for the long-term. Between the cost savings and the benefits of a new system, this is a win-win project for the MAC and our Downtown Clubhouse. Further, the city of St. Louis is anxious to get this PACE program up and running, and the scope of our project is clearly leading the way. Work should get underway next month and be complete in about 10 months. The actual work is really behind closed doors so it will not cause inconvenience to our members or guests. A big thank you to Skip Bowders and our facilities team for all their work and leadership with this project. We began working on this in June of 2012. It’s a long story with what we anticipate to be a great ending by upgrading systems to last the next 25 6 F Cherry Diamond F MAY 2015

to 30 years. All work that is long over-due and very necessary. Tagging on the idea of long-term prosperity, the second approved initiative relates to the future of the MAC and our foundations. The Board has approved the new position of Director of Foundations. This person will have professional experience with fundraising, events, donations, outreach efforts, planned giving and bequests. These skills will be applied to our three foundations: The Preservation Foundation, The Sports Foundation, and The Foundation for the Arts. Looking towards the future, the support of these foundations is pivotal to the long-term success of the Club. As a result, this position will be a dedicated resource with a long-term view and long-term investment in the continued health of the Club. They say the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, and the second best time is today. That is exactly how we are viewing this long-term initiative, which will pay dividends for future generations and the ongoing viability of the MAC. Third, from the survey we commissioned in 2012 to many, many conversations over the last few years, members have been voicing the strong desire to have an “adult” space at the West Clubhouse for business and socializing. I’m especially excited to share that these requests have been heard and are being addressed. Plans have been developed, and a project to build a new adult bar area at the West Clubhouse has been approved.

Construction is slated to begin in September following the pool season with the goal of holding a grand opening celebration of the new adult bar and renovated dining areas before the pool opens next season. The adult bar will be located on the west side of the building near the front entrance and include an outdoor patio overlooking the pool. The adult bar will be named “1903” in recognition of the year the MAC was founded, and it will bring a bit of that MAC history to our West Clubhouse. Detailed and specific program information is being drafted, and it is our intent to keep you fully informed every step of the way. Photos, videos, a timeline and other exciting tidbits will be shared during the next few months. We believe “1903” will quickly become the “go-to place” for our adult members and guests. And, as the saying goes, “you can’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been.” As we approach the 20-year anniversary of our purchase of the West Clubhouse this June 16, we look towards continual growth and improvements in our future. I look forward to toasting the past, present and future with you in our new bar. Cheers! See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Q&A:

Dr. Brad Hewitt, Director of Athletics – Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville Mr. Jason Coomer, Sr. Associate Athletics Director – SIUE

What is your approach to recruiting new members? We have identified many of our larger donors, supporters and prospects to attend functions at the MAC. Without question, exposing these individuals to the wide array of amenities available at both club locations is a great first step to increasing membership. How do you utilize the MAC’s dining and catering services? In the past month, we had the opportunity to utilize both services as we entertained alumni and donors traveling to St. Louis for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in the Sportsman’s Club as well as welcoming two men’s basketball head coach candidates to the St. Louis area with dinner at the Jack Buck Grille.

Dr. Brad Hewitt

What advice would you give to fellow members in their recruitment efforts? Exposure! There is no question that hosting events provides an Jason Coomer opportunity to expose potential members to all the great amenities available at the MAC. Repeat traffic of guest(s) can only strengthen the possibility of new membership. We would encourage members to extend a follow up invitation for lunch or drinks to re-engage the potential member.

Member Brad Byars Breaks Four MAC Swim Records Brad Byars, the first Saint Louis University Billiken in program history to capture a title for the men’s swim team, recently broke four MAC swim records in the under 50 age group. 50-yard Freestyle – Brad Byars: 22.84 seconds. Old record: 23.10 seconds held by Jim Hulverson.

In Memoriam:

Frank Wojehowski

Frank Wojehowski was a proud member of the Missouri Athletic Club and frequented the Downtown Clubhouse gym often. He passed away on December 31, 2014 at the age of 88. During his teen years, Wojehowski fought in Japan in WWII as a paratrooper and medic. Fittingly,

during his funeral, the American Legion, an association that regularly holds meetings at the MAC, gave a touching tribute to his life of service and honor. Wojehowski was grateful to the MAC during his medical leave of absence and thoroughly enjoyed everything the Club offered.

50-yard Breaststroke – Brad Byars: 28.85 seconds. Old record: 28.93 seconds held by Rick Penrose. 50-yard Backstroke – Brad Byars: 26.00 seconds. Old record: 28.88 seconds held by Yusef Freeman.

Contracts Corporate Employment Estate Planning

50-yard Butterfly – Brad Byars: 24.37 seconds. Old record: 25.84 seconds held by Yusef Freeman. If you would like to attempt to break a MAC swim record, contact the Downtown Athletic Desk at 314-539-4482 to setup an appointment. All records are posted on the pool deck.

MAC Tennis Pro, Kim Steinmetz, USTA Tournament Runner-Up During college, Kim Steinmetz, the MAC’s Tennis Director, played with Kathy Vick on a tennis team at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, but the two didn’t team up as a doubles pair until a national tournament outside of Chicago last spring. Recently, Steinmetz and Vick paired up again to compete in the USTA National Women’s 55 Clay Court Championships in Houston, Texas, and reached the finals. Although the team did not win, they both earned a coveted USTA silver ball pendant for second place. Steinmetz, after competing in only three tournaments in the last 20 years, wanted to make sure that she was not easily forgotten. “I needed to feel I was at least somewhat ‘match tough,’” she said. The pair’s next national event is the USTA National Women’s 55 Indoor Championships in Homewood/Chicago, Ill. from May 13-18.

Second place winners, Kathy Vick and Kim Steinmetz, show off their second place silver ball pendants.

Squash: The Leader in

Healthy Sports What is the healthiest sport? According to a survey by Forbes Magazine, squash is at the top of the list. The sport’s constant running increases muscle and builds endurance while giving the respiratory system an impressive workout. Lunges and twists keep the core strong and improve flexibility in the back. In an hour of squash, men can burn an average of 1,034 calories and women can burn an average of 884 calories. What is Squash? Squash is played on a court similar to a racquetball court with racquets and balls, and matches can be played in singles or doubles. The goal of the game is to hit the ball against the front wall, taking turns. The ball can only hit the floor once before each shot, but it can bounce off as many walls as a player wants. A match is the best of five games up to 11 points. Looking to get in shape and try something new? Give squash a try! Contact Squash Pro, Adam Bews at 314-539-4455 for more information.

Fitness Feature: Personal Training Success Stories

Angela Dahm, Age 32 Angela Dahm’s roots at the Missouri Athletic Club trace back to her grandparents, and she has been coming to the Club since she was born. She is carrying on this tradition with her now three-year-old daughter, Eleanor. When Ellie was about 14 months old, Angela decided that she needed to make some changes to improve her health. She had gained weight during her pregnancy and continued to gain weight following Ellie’s birth. As a result, she was overweight, battling high cholesterol, and felt unhealthy overall. Her sister recommended that she try working out with MAC personal trainer, Paul Helfrich, because he was knowledgeable, motivating, and personable. Angela took her advice, and still remembers her first meeting with Paul and having her body measurements taken. Since then, she has met with Paul once a week for three years and lost 70 pounds. Also, during that time, the high cholesterol that she had been monitoring with her doctor for ten years dropped by 100 points. She attributes her success to her sessions with Paul and the programs and tools he’s introduced to help her succeed outside of the fitness center. “When I’m facing a challenge, I let him know, and he always has a good recommendation, usually something I can do at home that doesn’t require fitting more sessions into my busy schedule,” said Angela. Paul recommended that Angela try Beachbody’s 21 Day Fix Program, which combines a healthy diet with exercise to promote weight loss. “The 21 Day Fix Program shows you how your plate should look,” said Angela. After seeing results, she decided to become a health fitness coach and distributor of the program. Angela recently started a free fitness community group through Facebook called The Organic Coach (facebook.com/theorganiccoach) with the mentality that it truly “takes a village” not only to raise a child, but also to be a healthy mother and person. On the site, she shares information about healthy diet and exercise, which she has made her lifestyle. At her home in Richmond Heights, she has an organic garden and raises three chickens. In addition to the quantifiable results that she has seen in herself over the last three years, she also believes that embracing a healthy lifestyle has benefited her family and her marriage. Together, they’ve become more active and enjoy taking that extra step to bike to the park. 20 F Cherry Diamond F MAY 2015

“Paul has been so much help! He’s such a great communicator that our sessions fly by. The next day, I’m so sore that it hurts to turn the steering wheel of the car, but it’s a good thing so I shoot him a text to say thanks. He’s incredibly talented – the best of the best. He trains real athletes, and he makes me feel like I’m becoming one.”

Kim Evans, Age 50

“They’re always on top of the newest things,” said Kim. “When I hear about some new fitness or diet trend on TV, I usually think to myself that the MAC is already doing that.”

Nine years ago, Kim Evans enlisted the help of MAC personal trainer, Andrew Francis to become more active. She was gaining weight, feeling lethargic and knew it was time to make a change. Her initial goal was to lose weight, but from a big picture standpoint, she wanted to feel fit. “Andrew really helped me see that it’s not as much about losing weight as it is toning muscles and losing inches,” said Kim. Once she began working out with Andrew, she immediately lost 20 pounds, and she has maintained her weight since. She continues to workout with Andrew because she likes the discipline he provides without being routine. “It’s never the same; I never know what we’re going to do during the workout,” said Kim. She appreciates the variations in the workout for a number of reasons. First, it keeps the workout interesting. Second, it allows her to target different areas of her body at different times. Third, as her body changes over time, they can adjust the workout to accommodate those changes. “It helps me to feel like I’m always making progress,” said Kim. Kim has been impressed by many of the MAC’s personal trainers. “I enjoy spinning class with Keisha. That’s how I met Andrew. I really liked his personality and gumption.” She describes the trainers as “higher than top notch people” because of their many certifications and continuing education and training. “They’re always on top of the newest things,” said Kim. “When I hear about some new fitness or diet trend on TV, I usually think to myself that the MAC is already doing that.” She also appreciates their responsiveness. “All of the trainers are great about answering questions on the spot. They provide assistance right then and there; they don’t make you schedule an appointment to address the issue.” Her confidence in the MAC personal trainers keeps her coming back. “I know I’m getting the best results,” she said.

Neil Garlich, Age 25 In the fall of 2008, Neil Garlich’s father suggested that he start working out with MAC personal trainer, Jesse Lopez. “My dad said good things about him; he thought that we would be a good match,” explained Neil. Since then, Jesse and Neil have met twice a week at the West Clubhouse. His fitness goal has been to get stronger, which he feels like Jesse has helped him accomplish. Neil describes his workout routine as warming up on the exercise bike, followed by lifting weights, 12-15 minutes on the treadmill, and wrapping up with stretching. He highly recommends Jesse as a personal trainer. When asked what he enjoys most about working out with Jesse, Neil replied, “I enjoy talking to him and getting to know him. I like his sense of humor. He’s compassionate and hard working. He really cares about his clients and the benefits they receive.”

Toastmasters – Becoming Leaders in Communication

Debbie and Gary Tidwell enjoy the splendid evening.

Leaders and excellent communicators are not “born.” The best athletes in the world still use coaches to improve their craft, and the best CEOs rely on consultants and advisors to help them make decisions. Bryan Schwarz worked in sales his whole career and gave thousands of presentations to groups from one to 200. A few years ago, he decided that he needed additional coaching in public speaking and communication. Schwarz also wanted to meet some great people at the Missouri Athletic Club and get more involved. He joined the MAC’s Toastmasters group and received much more than he hoped. Toastmasters is an international organization with almost 15,000 clubs in 126 countries. It is a supportive environment where people from diverse backgrounds can unite and strive to improve presentation, communication and leadership skills. The group meets at the Downtown Clubhouse on the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Rendezvous Room in the Jack Buck Grille. Members typically adjourn for additional conversation and refreshments after meetings. Call Bryan at 314-304-7036 if you have questions or would like to attend as a guest at a future meeting.

IMO’s BARN by Marty Coulter Art has been Marty Coulter’s passion since early childhood. Since no classes were available in the small town of Washington, Mo., where he grew up, Coulter studied on his own. After high school graduation, he sent his portfolio of car sketches to the Art Center School in Pasadena, Calif., and was accepted. Although financial hardship caused Coulter to cut his education short, opportunity knocked once again when he was asked to paint an aerial view of the campus. The project became the school’s orientation map, and this led to Coulter finding a summer job with an architectural illustrator who later became his business partner. Today, Coulter still dabbles in car art, but he prefers painting plein air landscapes of Missouri surroundings. His works have been showcased in several art galleries, and he has won numerous awards. Coulter thanks God for the energy and freedom he finds through his pursuit of art and continues to work hard in accomplishing his goals. If you are interested in purchasing the work on display, contact Wendy Descher at wdescher@mac-stl.org or 314-539-4438. Cherry Diamond F MAY 2015 F 31
