PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

May is such an amazing time in St. Louis. The weather starts to turn (sometimes slowly), allowing people to get outside more frequently, and the Cardinals are playing baseball. Also, don’t forget about the much-anticipated playoff run for the St. Louis Blues. The MAC isn’t much different. Our Board of Governors’ election is Thursday, May 5. As a member, you’ve got to a find a way to make it to the Downtown Clubhouse on Election Day. It’s a great experience for the new member and an opportunity to get updated on the Club’s initiatives and accomplishments. You’ll see and hear more about some of the enhancements of the campaign and the election, and you can refer to page 2 for the voting schedule. I’d like for all members to acknowledge Past Presidents John Bugh and Dean Eggerding on leading this year’s Nominating Committee and assimilating an outstanding slate of candidates. Their efforts will be tough to duplicate. May also brings our much anticipated opening of 1903 at our West Clubhouse. We appreciate all of our members’ patience through any disruptions or inconveniences with 1903’s construction and the dining room renovations. The dining room will be open for our Mother’s Day brunch in early May and the lobby entrance fully functional. Following a few private parties that were won or purchased at the Foundations’ Golf Classic and the Foundations’ Gala, 1903 will be open to the membership in late May. Having recently been out on the patio of 1903, I can’t wait. You’re going to love it!! As mentioned above, Mother’s Day Brunch will be served in both Clubhouses on Sunday, May 8. The Downtown Clubhouse menu is available by logging into the website. If you’re still looking for some great gift ideas, attend the Pro Shop’s Mother’s Day sale (see page 22 for details). The annual Father/Daughter Banquet is Wednesday, May 18. The father/daughter relationship is a special one, and this event is immediately blocked out on our calendar at home as soon as it’s announced. This annual tradition remains one of the most endearing moments I’ve had the pleasure of sharing with Hillary and Jane every year, and I hope it offers you the same. It’s also never too early to make your reservation and secure a sponsorship for the Foundations’ Golf Classic, to be held on Monday, August 29 at Glen Echo Country Club. May marks the time to start planning for our Summer Programs. You can register for the

Swim/Dive Team online at www.macwest.swimteam.us. You may also register for camps and tennis each week, separately, from the Youth Programs or Junior Tennis Calendars on the MAC website. Also, I encourage you to explore and embrace some of the enhanced golf programs the MAC is offering under our new Head Golf Professional, Maria Palozola. For more information, visit her website: www.stlouisgolf lessons.com/missouri-athletic club-members-only and use the password MAC2016GOLF to access the MAC’s membersonly page to receive special discounts. I want to extend a quick shout out to this year’s Weight Loss Challenge champion, Past President Chris Lawhorn, with a loss of 27.6 pounds, and his teammates: wife Tracy and 5th floor stallion Sean Kelley. Combined they lost an impressive 53.6 pounds. I look forward to Chris sporting his newly purchased MAC speedo at the West Clubhouse Pool this summer. As I complete my final column, I ensure the membership that the incoming leadership, captained by President Troy Robertson, will be outstanding with an unwavering commitment. Most would consider Troy to be an upgrade, and even I might agree with that, although I do have better hair. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to my fellow classmates, the Class of 2015 – Beau Reinberg, Bob Barnes, Chris Hyams and Peter Dunne – for their tireless efforts in the continued advancement and improvement of this Club. I believe we leave this Club in a better condition, and we did what we set out to do: we made an impact. I find it fitting that we step away on the same timeframe as the opening of 1903. This is a project that was contrived from a member survey, conducted shortly before we joined the Board, and has been brought to fruition with the efforts of the last three Board classes, staff and management planning and the continued membership commitment. Thank you and I look forward to sharing these future experiences with you. I actually shed a tear as I type this, leaving with the same message I came in with a year ago. The Missouri Athletic Club has changed my life, all for the better. My passion for the MAC has been unquestioned and is constantly on display. I sincerely hope every member has the same experience I have and the same affection towards the Club as I do. It’s been an honor and privilege to serve, and I hope to continue seeing you around the Club.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

When asked to explain the value of a Missouri Athletic Club membership, where would you start? As a member, you know that the Club offers a wide range of programs and events. Our mission statement serves as a reminder of our focus on athletics, dining and social for local leaders and their families. We can list the more than 90 reciprocal clubs, tout our Platinum Club of America status, and boast about our golf program, which features four courses at half the price of country clubs with only one course! Yet, after listing every single one of our Platinum Club features and amenities, I would be remiss for leaving out the biggest, most important, most valuable piece of the Club: the people. Recently, I was perusing the MAC’s YouTube Channel, and I stumbled upon an oldie (at least by today’s standards since anything more than two hours old on the internet is dated), but goodie video from 2013. The title is “Building Lifelong Friendships at the MAC,” and it features Jim McDonald and Don Clooney. If you haven’t seen it, take the time to hop on our YouTube channel and check it out. As an aside, did you know that the MAC has more than 80 videos on its YouTube channel for your viewing pleasure? Anyway, this video begins by highlighting Jim and Don’s 50-year friendship, which began at the MAC, and concludes with a reel of “outtakes” of them poking fun at each other about everything from who’s the best looking to who is more likely to pick up the tab. In many ways, in two minutes, this video summarizes the value of an MAC membership. It’s all about the people. 6 F Cherry Diamond F MAY 2016

»

Our newest YouTube video reiterates this same theme: friendship, camaraderie, relationships, networking, and philanthropy (i.e. caring about other people). It was taken at this year’s Gala when our red carpet paparazzi caught folks as they strolled by to ask, “What do you love about the MAC?” Again, in summary, the answer is the people. Check it out on our website, Facebook, or YouTube channel, and share it with someone who you’ve wanted to introduce to the Club, or if you’re reading this issue online, click on these links to watch the videos: F Building Lifelong Friendships at the MAC F Why We Love the MAC As you have probably guessed, in this column, I want to focus on some of the people who make this institution such a fabulous place. Our people are making three significant things happen this May. First, the long awaited 1903 bar and dining room will open. Second, we’ll host our annual Board of Governors’ election. Third, we’ll transition from our 100th to our 101st President of the MAC. Starting with 1903, see page 28 for a brief timeline of events leading up to the opening. In sum, the dining room will open for Mother’s Day. Then, we’ll host a number of private pre-opening parties in the bar for those who supported our foundations at last year’s golf tournament and this year’s gala. I also want to thank all of our members who sponsored a new member during the 1903 construction period. Not only did they waive the remainder of their investment in the project, but they will also be invited to a pre-opening reception with their sponsored members and their guests. All of these folks will have an opportunity to get a sneak peek and sample the menu and libations prior to the grand opening. I look forward to toasting you all and reiterating my appreciation at these pre-opening celebrations. Then, falling on Cinco de Mayo this year, we’ll host the annual Board of Governors’ election. The traditions surrounding the election form the cornerstone of this great institution. If you’ve never participated in the gauntlet before, make this your

inaugural year. It’s an opportunity to get into the trenches with the people who make the MAC great. Also, starting on page 8, you can read about our seven candidates and their qualifications. These candidates comprise another great group of people who will lead our Club into the future. Following the election, we’ll transition to the new Board and our next class of officers will take the lead. I look forward to working more closely with Rebekah Kingston, Tracy Beckette, Duffy Dunn, Tripp Zumwalt, and my new boss Troy Robertson. Thank you Bob Barnes, Peter Dunne, Chris Hyams, Beau Reinberg, and of course, President Brent Kaniecki for your service to the Club during your time on the Board. You’ve made a positive, lasting impact on the MAC and have helped initiate and institute many exciting new endeavors during the past three years. One of these noteworthy changes is the transition to electronic statements and online bill pay. Beginning May 31, statements will no longer be printed and mailed or emailed as a PDF. You will receive an email at the beginning of each month notifying you when the previous month’s statement is finalized and posted for payment. Then, you can login to the MAC website, view your statement, and pay your statement! This is super exciting, and it will save the Club more than $25,000 just in postage! This doesn’t include the countless staff hours previously dedicated each month to sending statements. Additionally, this method provides added security, expedited access to the finalized statement, ability to pay online, and an environmentally friendly solution. Did I mention that we added online bill pay!? I know online bill pay has been on the member wish list for a while, and we’re so thrilled to be offering it now. As always, the people who work with you and for you here at the MAC continually strive to provide value to your member experience. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Joining the board is an extraordinary opportunity to give back to a Club that has come to mean so much to me. Opportunity brings responsibility: a responsibility that entails fully understanding and representing the interests of 2300 members while making sound strategic decisions for the Club’s legacy and the 300 employees. Our Club deserves a board of governors with varying backgrounds and approaches. I have been fortunate to work in equity research at Stifel over the past 8 years, covering roughly 20 food and tobacco companies. The job has sharpened my finance and accounting skills while instilling a strong client-first mentality. Intense preparation and consistent analysis have aided my career, and I have brought these qualities to the Club’s committees on which I currently serve. My committee experiences have helped me understand and appreciate the Club’s opportunities and challenges. With my background and understanding of what is needed to best serve the Club, I am positioned well to help lead the Club and guide our management team as they work to improve our financial position, strengthen the overall value proposition, and grow our membership.

I have gotten so much fulfillment and enjoyment from the club and its membership. I view running for the Board of Governors as a way to give back to an institution that I love so much. I started my own law firm with three partners in the fall of 2012. In the last three and a half years, our firm has grown from six employees to twenty-seven. During this time, I have gained a wealth of knowledge in marketing, finances and human resources. I believe this experience would prove invaluable if I am fortunate enough to serve on the Board. If elected, I will utilize the above skills to ensure that all MAC Members get the same level of enjoyment from the Club that I have experienced.

Thanks so much for meeting with me, for taking so much time and for the fabulous tasting! I felt so accomplished when I left and really, really glad that we had picked the MAC!! I took all the food to Kimmy and JJ and they ate it at 10 when they arrived ... starving, by the way! I wanted to warm it all up in the microwave at the hotel, but they just dove in ... and loved it all! They said, “If it tastes this good cold, we can imagine how great it’s going to be warm!” Thanks again! Looking forward to the big day!! — Bill, Anne, Kimmy and JJ Frazier Thanks again for all you and your staff did to make our board meeting go well. Ball Position is Critical to Accuracy by Head Golf Professional, Maria Palozola Setup is the blueprint for a solid swing. Grip, aim, posture, stance and ball position are all building blocks for creating a consistent and repeatable move. Unfortunately, all of these setup components can get out of whack week to week. This is exactly why tour players are with their coaches at every major event. They are checking setup just as often, if not more often, than they are checking swing motion. Ball position is something than can easily change without awareness. Without constant monitoring, the ball can be found creeping forward or back in your stance. When this occurs, errors in direction, trajectory and even distance happen as spin and launch are affected. WHERE SHOULD YOU PLACE THE BALL? Where to put the ball in your stance can be confusing for a lot of golfers, which is understandable as teachings have changed. When I was a kid (not so long ago), they taught a progressive ball position. This meant placing the ball back in your stance for a pitching wedge and moving it progressively further and further towards your front foot as the irons decreased in number. Modern day tour players keep it much more simple as they want to trap the ball at the same point in the arc with all their irons. When moving the ball around, it catches in different parts of your arc (downswing or upswing) and therefore changes the effective loft of the club that was built into it for a reason. KEEP IT SIMPLE Place the ball at the center of your stance for most irons (PW through 5 iron), play your driver at your front instep and play long irons (4 iron, 3 iron), hybrids and fairway woods in between. Everything is played from the middle of your stance forward creating a consistent attack angle and encouraging you to shift your weight throughout the shot. The only time you need to play a ball back of the center of your stance is if you want to hit it low into the wind or under a tree. T DRILL FOR CONSISTENCY To keep a constant ball position, every time you hit balls at the practice range use two alignment sticks or two clubs to form the letter “t”. Aim one club at the target and place it half way between you and the ball. Line the other club 90 degrees to form the “t” and place your ball just beyond the tip of the “t”. This way you can look down between your feet and see if the ball is in the middle of your stance, at your front instep or between the two and make sure it remains constant day in and day out. 20 F Cherry Cherry Diamond F MAY 2016

Employees Glean New Ideas from IHRSA Conference

MAC fitness managers Paul Helfrich and Courtney Hutt recently attended the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) conference in Florida and brought back great ideas! DAY ONE Day one began by watching two fitness classes: rope burn and wave20. Rope burn, a battle rope class, incorporated body weight exercises with kettle bell movements. Wave20 utilized a weighted bag that could be moved in different ways (squats, presses and curls) for a workout. Later on in the day, Helfrich and Hutt hit the expo showroom, visited more than 2,000 booths, and watched TRX, Zumba and Pilates demos. The biggest takeaway that both the trainers gained was learning where the fitness industry was heading. Most major companies didn’t showcase their training equipment (i.e. Nautilus) but highlighted the functional training equipment, which seemed to be all the rave (i.e. structures using TRX bands that also included storage spaces for mats, kettle bells, med balls and more). All of these training areas were developed for high intensity interval training for TRX. Activities included pushing and pulling sleds, flipping tires, engaging in plyomet rics, box jumps and more. These training structures, which are perfect for small spaces such as racquetball courts, can be disassembled within seconds allowing for the floor to be opened up for lifting and other exercises. DAY TWO The showroom floor opened at 6 a.m. for attendees to watch, take classes or use the equipment. Helfrich and Hutt were able to see equipment’s functionality and usability. After breakfast, the trainers attended three seminars that discussed speed and agility, nutrition and wellness and how to integrate programs at health 22 F Cherry Diamond F MAY 2016

Chris Lawhorn Wins Weight Loss Challenge Fifteen members competed in the annual Weight Loss Challenge, which ran from January 11-March 21. As a group, they lost a total of 159.6 pounds. Chris Lawhorn won the challenge by losing 27.6 pounds, which was 12.19% of his body weight. Colin Tully came in second by losing 19 pounds, which was 9.35% of his body weight. For winning the competition, Chris received the grand prize package of a one-night stay in a villa at Chaumette Vineyards and Winery in Ste. Genevieve, MO, including breakfast and dinner for two, and five massages and five personal training sessions at the MAC. For finishing in second place, Colin received three massages and three personal training sessions at the MAC. A team aspect was added to the competition this year. The winning team was Chris Lawhorn, Tracy Lawhorn and Sean Kelley. They lost a total of 53.6 pounds. Each of them received a $50 gift certificate to use anywhere at the MAC.

Fitness Tip

A simple way to push limits and see results is charting progress. Write down the weights and reps completed and push for more. Seeing those gains on paper and in the mirror are great ways to measure success. Also, don’t be afraid to work out with a partner. The Club offers personal training for as low as $27.50 per person for groups of four or more! Visit the website or call Paul Helfrich at 314-539-4453 or Courtney Hutt at 314-539-4495.

Weight Loss Challengers Share Success Stories Weight Loss Challengers Chris Lawhorn and Colin Tully have personal trainer Courtney Hutt to thank for their achievements. Both share their stories on how Hutt helped them shed pounds. CHRIS AND TRACY LAWHORN Chris started talking about the MAC’s Weight Loss Challenge before Christmas last year, and his wife Tracy was initially reluctant. However, it happened to be just the motivation both of them needed. The Lawhorns began incorporating Courtney Hutt’s structured classes such as Turbo Shred, Bosu and personal training into their schedules. “Courtney has been amazing,” says the couple. “She worked us hard but never pushed us past a point we could not handle.” At the end of the challenge, Chris was pronounced the winner, losing a total of 27.6 pounds. Tracy came in third by losing 15.5 pounds. “This competition, along with the amazing support of Courtney, has been truly life changing.” Chris and Tracy both highly recommend next year’s challenge to fellow members. COLIN TULLY For the past few years, Colin Tully wasn’t seeing the results he wanted after messing around in the gym. In July of 2015, Courtney Hutt came to the MAC and changed his life. They began working out two times a week. After a few months, Hutt suggested that Tully participate in the Weight Loss Challenge. Tully switched from training twice a week to three times a week, using his “off” days to attend Hutt’s Turbo Shred or Bosu classes. Day by day, the pounds were shed. Tully attributes his success to Hutt’s constant encouragement and drive. “Courtney and her training is, without question, the best thing that ever happened to my fitness life,” says Tully. “I highly recommend her to all members that need a fitness jumpstart.” Cherry Diamond F MAY 2016 F 23

Foundation Focus: Highlighting the Sports Foundation and Its Impact By Director of Foundations, Cynthia Goudy The MAC Sports Foundation, a 501c3, honors excellence in sports not only in the Club but also in the St. Louis area. When members think of the Sports Foundation, they typically think about the Hermann Trophy Banquet and the Jack Buck Awards. Both events are cornerstones on the MAC social calendar and recognize outstanding achievements in athletics. In addition, the Sports Foundation focuses many of its philanthropic efforts on community outreach initiatives. However, your dollars donated to the Sports Foundation go much farther than you may think. Recently, the Sports Foundation supported the following organizations: Legacies Alive, Special Olympics, and CityArch River. The Missouri Athletic Club has a wonderful tradition of giving both of one’s time and assets. The Sports Foundation is just one way you can support the Club and watch your donation impact the community and at the MAC. Another opportunity to support the Club through the Sports Foundation is the Club Within a Club (CWC), Charitable Society for Children (CSC). The CSC was started nearly 10 years ago. Mr. Sam Hopmeier, member since 2007, is the chair of the CSC. The mission of the CSC is simple: support other charities that help children in and around the St. Louis area. Mr. Hopmeier has worked tirelessly over the years to ensure that the mission of the CSC is upheld and that the Missouri Athletic Club continues to reach out in the community and help others. He is a wonderful pillar of generosity at the Club and in the St. Louis community. Last year, the CSC donated nearly $30,000 to local

children’s charities. This year, the CSC is impacting these three charities: The Maggie Welby Foundation, Lift for Life Academy and LoveU2Pieces. Outside of the Sports Foundation, the MAC has launched a comprehensive philanthropy program, which raises money for our other two foundation as well: Foundation for the Arts and Preservation Foundation. Our strategy is coming together as we navigate a fundraising cycle that best benefits the Club. The months ahead are jam packed with opportunity to support one of the three foundations. August has officially been renamed to Foundation’s Month at the MAC. It will highlight, educate and raise funds for each of these important causes. Foundations Month will be in conjunction with the MAC’s largest fundraiser, the annual Foundations’ Golf Tournament. I look forward to educating our members and raising funds for three such wonderful missions. I also want to properly thank our members and donors who have committed to the Club. I look forward to our annual recognition event in February, the Foundations’ Gala. For more than 100 years, the Missouri Athletic Club has boasted an outstanding reputation in the community. Supporting the foundations is just another way to help the MAC continue to leave a mark and a legacy in the St. Louis region for the next 100 years. Finally, if you are interested in including the MAC in your estate, please contact me at cgoudy@mac-stl.org. I would be happy to assist you and provide information about the impact your gift will have on the future of the MAC.
