PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

It’s mind boggling to me that this is my last column (please restrain your excitement). What an amazing, fast paced, educational, inspiring year it has been. Since this is my farewell entry, it would seem an appropriate time to make a scandalous admission on my part: I really wasn’t properly qualified to be President of the prestigious Missouri Athletic Club. After all, I went to a public high school – in St. Charles no less. Gasp! I’m a real estate broker, not a bank chairman or a high ranking corporate executive. I didn’t grow up at the MAC. I’m not a legacy member. In fact, I was the first member of my family to join the Club in 2001. My brother Ryan, some of you Mizzou fans may remember him, is now also a member – so typical of him to follow in my footsteps. On top of all that, I have no background or experience whatsoever in private club management. After six years on the Board, I still don’t fully understand how General Manager Wally Smith masterfully handles the 24-hour non-stop world that is the MAC. Getting everyone to work in lock step together toward the goal of being the premier athletic, dining, and social destination in town is daunting to say the least. At this point, you’re probably asking, “how in the world was this guy ever elected President?” My answer to that question is simple: team and service. The MAC in all its complexity, busyness and history is really the story of an incredible TEAM. I understand team. I love team. I’ve been part of a team through sports my whole life. I realize the value in everyone striving together for one unified goal. That selfless mentality really comes from a service point of view. Serve others. Serve the employees. Serve a goal greater than yourself. I’ve discovered the true secret sauce of the MAC: if you truly serve the Club, in any form, it will pay you back tenfold. I’m proof of that. As President, it has been a joy to watch our team work. Starting with my senior class, Rebekah Kingston, General Tracy Beckette, Finance Chair Duffy Dunn, and all around “get it done” guy Tripp Zumwalt. This highly skilled group of people have poured a ton of time and energy into the MAC. Our class along with the rest of our talented Board has played its part in guiding the Club to a successful year. At time of print, I’m thrilled to say we are +35 in membership headcount and on track or ahead of pace to surpass all of our budgeted revenue goals through nine months of our fiscal year. By any measure, it’s been a great year! It will only continue

to get better under President Elect Mike Schoedel’s leadership. Mike is a genuine, thorough, proven leader, and I’m excited to see where he takes the Club over the next year. Good luck, Mike! Rounding out our team are our wonderful employees. I don’t have room in this column to describe how I feel about our employees. I hope that my respect and admiration for them has been evident over the past year. Wally Smith and our senior staff are an immensely capable and dedicated group. Their comprehensive knowledge of the Club and their vision on where its headed has been a case study in professionalism. I’ve spent more time with Wally and staff over the past year than I have with my wife, joking but just barely, and I can tell you firsthand we have a GREAT management team! Speaking of my wife, Tressa, I have to acknowledge her huge contributions to the Club. Tressa and I were engaged when I was first elected to the MAC Board. Six years later, we have three beautiful kids and a family of our own. I can’t thank her enough for allowing me to fulfill my Presidential obligations. There were countless nights when I attended a CWC event or membership happy hour while she was at home with three kids, all under age five. She has been the perfect First Lady. Her support and insights into the membership have been invaluable. Thank you, baby! My great friend Scott Highmark who convinced me to join the MAC, that’s right blame him, recently shared this quote with me. He was referencing it in a different context, but I thought it perfectly described my “work” here as President: “The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both.” Thank you for the opportunity to represent you as President over the last year. It has been equal parts work and play, and it has ALL been my honor.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

This afternoon, I attended a meeting with our Strategic Planning Committee, and I’m so fired up about the discussion that I needed to sit down and write my column to share it with you while the conversation is still fresh. Throughout the past few months, I’ve shared that the goal of our Strategic Planning Committee, excellently chaired by Governor Tracy Beckette, is to update, design and implement a strategic “planning process” and to create an overall framework and ongoing system to ensure that the plan becomes a living document and does not go on the metaphorical or literal shelf to be forgotten. This strategic plan is important for several reasons. It will: 1. Annually define where the MAC is and where it is going. 2. Formally outline criteria for success and the outcomes that will be achieved by this process. 3. Identify “critical success factors” or specific areas of focus that need to be addressed and readdressed each year, such as financial stability, membership growth, facilities, programs and services, management and staff, governance, marketing and communication strategies, and viable foundations. 4. Use the “4As” (agenda setting, allocating resources, activating the work, and accounting for results) 6 F Cherry Diamond F MAY 2017

»

to establish a timeframe for various activities. 5. Be anchored by our ten-year financial roadmap that is updated annually. 6. Provide a “map” for developing strategic, operational and capital plans and set out the uses of all resources – human, financial, and facilities. The Board of Governors, working with the Governance Committee, will also suggest language to be added to the bylaws that will institutionalize this planning process, making it a part of the Board’s and Management’s annual responsibilities. This ongoing system will provide continuity, forethought and direction to the MAC’s annually changing governance body. This process will be indoctrinated, ingrained into our culture, and become part of the Club’s DNA. Gone are the days of great minds developing excellent strategic plans that fall by the wayside. At this time, a tremendous amount of work has been done by our Finance Committee and task groups along with Larry Absheer and Pam Roth in our accounting department to develop an agreed upon financial footprint and comprehensive financial roadmap ahead. This will align with the agenda setting that will take place as our new Board is elected to office in May. With this financial roadmap as the anchor for our planning process, which is tied to our annual budget process and fiscal year, our timeline initiatives begin to flow into reality. As part of our next steps, the committee will meet later this month to flesh out some of the critical success factors mentioned previously and ensure that they align with the vision for the Club, which is an outcome of the survey we just completed. Each factor is dependent upon the others. For example, financial stability is dependent on membership growth;

membership growth is dependent on superior facilities, quality management and staff, and effective marketing. The results of the membership survey will be used to develop overarching objectives for each area. Expect a summary of the membership survey results in the June issue of the Cherry Diamond followed by an outline of our strategic plan incorporating those results in the July roster. Use the roster for accountability as we move forward. Speaking of moving forward, beginning in May, I look forward to working more closely with Talmage Newton, Tim Powers, Paul Shuff Jr., Tim Slater, and our new President, Mike Schoedel, as they transition into their roles as Board officers along with the newly elected Board class of 2017. I would be remiss to end this column without thanking Governors Tracy Beckette, Rebekah Bahn-Kingston, Tripp Zumwalt, Duffy Dunn, and President Troy Robertson for their years of Board service to the Missouri Athletic Club. Some history for our new members: President Robertson was first elected to the Board of Governors in 2011, and then re-elected in 2014 before becoming the 101st President. He has served six consecutive years on the Board, and his passion and dedication to the Club are evident. He has spent the last few months vetting out the leaders within our membership to continue to carry his passion for many areas of the Club. I have no doubt that he and his fellow Board class will continue to be an influential part of our membership. Thank you to all of our members who dedicate their time and talents to serving the Club. You are so appreciated.

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

I am running for Board of Governors because it is my time to step up and help keep the MAC as the premier athletic club in the area. I am active at both clubhouses and have served on committees and the Sports Foundation. I participate in the basketball leagues and enjoy being involved in club and foundation events as a participant and donor. The MAC is a tremendous asset that I enjoy. My two most memorable items are hosting my daughter’s wedding reception in the Missouri Room and playing summer league basketball with my son. I have established life-time friendships with many MAC members and have recruited new members.

The staff and fellow members are in many ways an extension of my family. I am very fortunate working across the street from the downtown clubhouse, giving me the ability to spend nearly every day at the club in some capacity. So many of my fondest memories occurred at the MAC including our wedding reception in the Missouri Ballroom, the annual breakfast with Santa, watching our children jump off the diving board for the first time out West, time spent on the golf course with fellow golf club members and evenings enjoying the camaraderie at various clubs within a club events. Being a key decision maker and driving the strategic direction in our family business exposes me to all aspects of making an organization successful. My background positions me to humbly give back to the club and will help me serve on the Board of Governors. I want to assure long term success for the MAC so that my children may enjoy the club as I do and that my wife and I may one day host my daughters’ wedding receptions at the Missouri Athletic Club.

I am at a stage in my life where my experiences starting companies can be an asset to the club as we look for new ways to change and grow. The MAC of the 1970’s is not the MAC of 2017 and will not be the same in 2037. We need to make sure the club’s resources and experiences move forward to meet the needs of our members today and tomorrow. As Governor, I will work to keep the MAC a Platinum Club.

First of all, it is imperative we uphold and preserve the tradition of members voting for their leadership on the board of governors. This time honored process ensures quality leaders come from all areas of expertise in our membership. Next, is the need for a conservative hawk to provide insights for improvements of our financial operations to keep our club affordable to promote membership growth. Finally, provide long-term guidance geared at keeping both locations “up with the times” with regard to atmosphere, equipment and services. Be assured, I will hit the ground running and be an immediate asset. A FUN AND FESTIVE

EASTER

Weekend

During Easter weekend, families enjoyed fun and festive celebrations at both clubhouses. On Saturday, April 15, the annual Easter egg hunt was held at the West Clubhouse. Members’ children hunted for more than 4,000 eggs, enjoyed a delicious breakfast buffet and photos with the Easter bunny. On Sunday, April 16, both clubhouses hosted a brunch, but the Downtown Clubhouse welcomed families with a petting zoo and photo opportunities with the Easter bunny. Photo credit: Kalie Long

ALL IN THE FAMILY:

Making Memories at the Club

Since its inception, the Missouri Athletic Club has been a destination for special family celebrations. From the Father/Daughter Banquet to Mother’s Day Brunch and numerous holiday events throughout the year, there’s no better backdrop for creating lasting memories. The Missouri Athletic Club has a reputation for its athletics, dining, and social amenities, but the Club is also known for its intangible qualities like camaraderie, spirit and fellowship. These priceless attributes are some of the primary reasons why prospects join the Club and why members retain their membership for a lifetime. These key ingredients explain why multi-generational members are so common. “We had four generations at Easter Brunch: my father, myself, my daughters and sons and the grandchildren; it was a good day,” says Terry Hammer. Easter Brunch is one of the most popular family events at the Club, and Mark Ohlendorf shares how it has played a role in his family’s traditions. “My wife and I have been taking our children and grandchildren (12 in all) to the Easter Brunch at the MAC for many years,” he says. “From the very beginning, we told the grandchildren they need to use their MAC manners while at the brunch. As a reward, I take them all up to the gym after brunch to run off their energy. Whenever we take the children to a “special” place, we tell them that this requires MAC etiquette.” For some, a connection with the Club develops through participating in youth sports. “My greatest memories from the MAC were the times my mom came down to

see me compete in the swimming events hosted by the Saturday boys program,” says Beau Reinberg. “My mother had a tremendous amount of appreciation for what the Club meant to my father and her BEAU REINBERG AND HIS MOM, LINDA. three sons. Years later, it was an honor to bring her to the Mother/Son Banquet with my son Albert…we had a great time.” Chris Steuterman, a third-generation member, also has fond childhood memories at the Club, and now, he creates new memories with his children Kaki and Charlie. “It’s fun for my daughter Kaki to talk to her grandfather and me about when we used to run around the Club as kids. And now Kaki is running around so it really is like passing down a legacy of sorts. I have great memories of the Saturday morning boys classes, and it gave my dad the opportunity to take all the boys down to the MAC.”

A PRINCESS FOR A NIGHT Like Cinderella, most daughters dream of dressing like a princess and attending a grand ball at some point in her life. Fortunately, for daughters of MAC members, those dreams turn into a reality for one night in May at the annual Father/Daughter Banquet. This special event has taken place every year since 1946 and still goes strong. Daughters enjoy a magical evening with their prince charming—a.k.a. dad. Above are some highlights from past dances.

A MODERN-DAY FAIRYTALE Long-time member Greg Hantak has been attending this event with his daughters for 18 years. “For myself, my father and my daughters this event has produced a lifetime of memories and photos. This will be something I will be doing with my daughters and their daughters,” he says. Tom Ackerman shares his thoughts on this special event and what it means to him and his daughters. “The Father/Daughter Dance is a very special event for my girls, who look forward to it every year,” he says. “They are treated like princesses from the moment they walk in the door with gifts, photos, a carriage ride, dinner and dancing. I always remember to take a step back and soak in the moment ... we all know they grow up so fast. There’s also the camaraderie among the dads with daughters, an unofficial “club within the club.” This date is always circled on my calendar.” Chris Steuterman has escorted his daughter Kaki to this event since her birth four years ago, and he treasures many special memories. “I’ve been taking Kaki since she was nine months old,” Chris says. “Kaki’s excitement for this event has grown tremendously in recent years, and now she gets excited and asks me when it will happen. The MAC provides an incredible backdrop that makes for a very memorable experience. I’m grateful to the MAC on many different levels. The staff, as always, treats her like an absolute princess, and I get the opportunity to spend an evening with my daughter filled with fun and laughter.” Brian Hogan, a 34-year member, has attended 16 Father/Daughter Banquets since his daughter Courtney was two years old. “The Father/Daughter Dance was an event we both looked forward to each spring and allowed us to make lifelong memories together,” he says. Many years later, in 2014, Hogan continued creating memories with his daughter when she held her wedding at the Downtown Clubhouse. “Each year at the Father/Daughter Dance we would always request the band to play “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” by Elton John from The Lion King,” Hogan says. “Being able to dance to the same song in the same ballroom for the Father/Daughter dance at Courtney’s wedding was very special.” Hogan’s sister, Julie, also attended the Father/Daughter Banquets with their father, Past President Carl Hogan, in the late 1960’s and later held her own wedding at the Club in 1988. It’s safe to say that the father-daughter bonds run deep within the Hogan family, and the MAC has been the common thread through it all. A Method to the Madness Have you ever wondered what goes into hosting a meeting or a member-sponsored event at the Missouri Athletic Club? Behind the scenes, the expert catering staff at each clubhouse follow a unique process to ensure that each event goes off without a hitch. The process varies a bit depending on the type of event and location, but in general, the catering staff follows this timeline to ensure these items are in place and take the event planning burden off the host.

Save the Date. Members are encouraged to solidify a date with the catering department well in advance because dates and times book up quickly.

1

2 Create a Catering Event Order. Once the parameters above are established, a catering event order outlining the information is prepared and sent to the host for review. Once the event details are confirmed, the CEO is communicated with staff in related departments so all hands are on deck.

3

Special Orders.

In most cases, the host selects a menu from a variety of tried and true delicious options, and specific dietary needs are accommodated whenever possible.

5 Fresh Ingredients.

6 Seating Arrangements and Room Setup. At this point, the details are finalized, and the MAC’s catering staff sets up the space according to the member’s preference, including any established seating chart.

Early on, all the details may not be finalized, but it’s good to establish a timeline for the event, number of people attending, room preferences, the style of meal (light or heavy hors d’oeuvres, plated or buffet, etc.) and beverage preferences. These decisions can be made more than a year in advance or within 24 hours for wakes and other unforeseen events.

Coordinate a Menu with the Chef.

4 Ambiance is an important element of any event. Sometimes a little “extra” is needed to set the mood. Depending on how extra special the need, an order may be placed months in advance for an ice sculpture, linens, chairs or décor.

Set the Parameters.

7 8

A few days prior to the event, the food is delivered to the clubhouse to begin preparation for the big meal. Seafood arrives the day of the event.

The Main Event. Guests arrive, and the MAC’s staff dazzles them with Platinum-level service and accommodations; leaving guests raving and the host often rescheduling for the following year.

In her presentation, Stone emphasized that she faces the same challenges as the other women in the room, but what sets a leader apart is how she approaches those challenges. Cornett then shared the accomplishments of the five local honorees who are clearly leaders in the St. Louis community.

WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE WINNER:

Kerry McEvoy

Fifteen members competed in the annual Weight Loss Challenge, which ran from Jan. 9 to March 27. Kerry McEvoy won the challenge by losing 15.7% of her body weight. Ray Steitz took second place with a 7.7% loss, and Tim Malyszko took third with a 7.4% loss. “Back in January, I saw an article for the Weight Loss Challenge in the Cherry Diamond and knew that was what I needed. I had great intentions to get into the gym, and every day something would come up that was more important. This went on for a year and a half! I thought the challenge may be the answer. I started taking three of Courtney’s classes each week: Turbo Shred on Tuesday and Friday and Bosu on Thursday. I also added in the elliptical every day that I had class and made changes in my diet. By staying focused on diet and exercise, I reached my goal. And yes, there were days I cheated, but I did not lose sight of my goal. I just picked up the next day and pushed on. I am very glad I participated in the Weight Loss Challenge; not only did I reach my personal goal, but exercise has become a part of my life. Now, for phase two: muscles!” – Kerry McEvoy Old-World Craftsmanship Tomorrow’s Technology.

A SPINNING CLASS HIGHLIGHTS THE LATEST EQUIPMENT.

MAC Personal Trainer Attends IHRSA Conference West Fitness Manager, Paul Helfrich, recently returned from the 2017 IHRSA (International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association) conference in Los Angeles. While he was there, he looked at the new TRX technology, functional training equipment, yoga and pilates classes, and much more since fitness trends change every year. He reported that Crossfit has been and will continue to be popular, but there are many new trends for safer and more effective ways to teach a Crossfit type class. Expos showing weight machine circuits such as Nautilus, Cybex or Lifetime are a thing of the past. Every company is adapting towards the following trends: functional training (Crossfit type workouts), spinning with leader board technology and a rocking ambiance, yoga/pilates/barre type classes, and equipment that trains for speed, power, and explosiveness.

Fitness Tip

Planks are one of the best exercises to strengthen the core and midsection. However, planks are not designed to be marathons. Holding planks for longer than 90 seconds can cause muscle fatigue, which can start to wreak havoc on the lower back and various muscle groups. Instead, try holding a plank for 60 to 90 seconds while doing different things within that time such as opposite arm and leg raises, elbow to hand stretches, alternate side planks, or even one-leg planks.
