from the president LOTS OF FUN

I’m so blessed. What an incredible year! Thank you for the opportunity to be part of such a legendary Club. It was more than an honor; it was a humbling experience. I got to meet so many of our members who make this Club a unique and fantastic place to ”hang out.” As a team of Governors, we made our best effort to ensure that our members continue to have great experiences. To that end, we: F Finalized a strategic/capital plan that will guide us for the next 10 years. F Updated the Club’s policy manual and initiated conversations on our governance/ election model. F Reaffirmed and promoted the importance of our foundations. More than $215,000 was raised. F Completed numerous building and fitness improvements at the Downtown Clubhouse. F Initiated a plan and began work on significant fitness improvements at the West Clubhouse. F The Jack Buck Awards, Hermann Trophy banquet, and Boxing night enjoyed the largest crowds ever. F Managed a new successful event with the USBWA Awards. F Established a budget that met all our obligations, saved money, and reinvested in our facilities. F Tackled tough topics that generated spirited discussion and goal setting. These efforts were the direct result of our hardworking governors, committee members and talented staff. The MAC is a legacy and a well-respected institution. We believe we helped contribute to ensuring that legacy sticks around for another 100+ years. I cannot wait to see all of you at the West and Downtown Clubhouses. I had so much FUN this year. Hope you did too! My thanks and admiration to the members of the MAC!

MANY THANKS

Never enough time or space to thank everyone. First and foremost, I thank God for giving me this opportunity. I also thank: My classmates. These gentlemen dedicated a significant amount of their personal time to the success of this Club. It was an honor and TOTALLY FUN to serve with them: F First Vice President Tim Powers – Essential to the success of the CWCs and our golf program; inventor of the West “town hall” breakfast meetings; loves the MAC legacy. F Second Vice President Tim Slater – Strong supporter and communicator to our 225+ basketball players; critical input on many our financial discussions; Club enthusiast. F Treasurer Paul Shuff – Leader on fitness improvements Downtown; strong supporter of the strategic planning process; dedicated to “progress through tradition;” calm in the clutch. F Secretary Talmage Newton – His wit was necessary in any serious conversation; handled governance issues better than King Solomon; passionate about improving. Our next leaders. These two-year governors have earned the right to take the MAC to new heights. I’m so excited for them. They will do an incredible job: F President-Elect Keith Phoenix – The 103rd President is calm, cool and collected; skillful negotiator; brings new value-add to the Club. F Governor Pawlitz – Consummate thinker; extremely diligent; raises the bar in all meetings. F Governor Morris – Avid supporter of MAC sports; mentor to young members; balanced. F Governor Carter – Understands numbers better than anyone; passionate about the MAC. F Governor Smith – Dedicated to the success of the CWCs; gives a fresh perspective to long conversations. This year’s freshman class of Governors are the real deal. Prediction – this is the class that will make a huge mark on the MAC. Tracy Beckette, John Pennington,

Kevin Cantwell, Tim Malyszko, and Mark Brandom were tremendous first year teammates. Foundation Chairpersons: Over the last two years, our foundations have received a lot of attention. MAC members contributed more than $215,000 to maintain our historic Downtown Clubhouse, invest/ maintain our art collection, recognize amateur athletic achievement, and help support local children’s agencies. Thanks to our foundation leaders: F Tom Albus – Art F John Bugh – Preservation F Greg Beekman - Sports F Nat Walsh – CSC F Jarid King – CSC Women’s Initiative Group: We continue to expand our efforts to attract, involve and provide more programs for women. Angie Minges took charge this year and has done a great job. Thank you! MAC staff: Our MAC employees are awesome. It’s unfair not to name them all. They show us every day why they are known for platinum service and dedication. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Wally Smith, our CEO/GM, is a rock star and captain of this behemoth MAC ship. Please don’t forget his wife, Allison, who helps complete that incredible team. We are a successful Club because of Wally’s leadership. He has a great senior staff. Thoroughly enjoyed working with them. MY FAMILY: There is NO WAY you can serve as Governor or President without the support of your family. My family was there for me even though I wasn’t around much. My wife Alyson is the best thing in my life. On top of that I have two incredible kids – Madelyn and Patrick. I love all three dearly!! Not only were they supportive of my service, but they are heavily engaged in the MAC. Can you imagine a Penguin Swim Team without the Schoedels?!

from the general manager Wow, April was an exciting month! In the timespan of one week, the MAC hosted the College Basketball Awards, President’s Foundations’ Ball, and Women of Distinction Luncheon; my second daughter held her wedding at the Club; construction began on the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project; membership numbers are up; and we launched and exceedingly filled the Glen Echo/MAC Full Membership program. Holy moly! As I like to say, the MAC is on the move! Let’s keep the momentum going, starting with Glen Echo/MAC Full Membership program. In early April, the Glen Echo/MAC Full Membership program was mentioned solely in the April Cherry Diamond and to our Golf Club members. By the time our golf kickoff event took place on April 11, only one of the 25 spots in the program remained. Now, a wait list has started, and many people are inquiring if more should be done to address the demand for this program. This has spurred conversations within various groups about further aligning the MAC with Glen Echo in a more purposeful way to give more of our members an opportunity to enjoy the full Glen Echo Country Club experience. Some of the big questions being asked are: What would it be like to add a country club lifestyle offering to the MAC? Would there be new member/ member benefits to having full access to a third country club location within a short drive from our Downtown and West Clubhouses? What would it be like to be closer affiliated with another club whose history dates back to the 1904 Olympics? It’s lots of fun to think about these things.

To help us answer some of these questions, we have this kind of quasi test market through these 25 MAC/Glen Echo memberships that were quickly filled. These members committed to a 12-month Glen Echo Full Membership program for only $275 per month in addition to their MAC dues, which we think is a great deal. The most expensive tier of MAC dues is about $400 per month. With the added expense of the program, these members are only paying about $675 per month, and they have full access to three clubhouses, facilities and amenities. Locally, the average cost of belonging to a country club alone is $746.35 per month, and that only gives members access to one facility! Does an opportunity to utilize three clubs at that price point interest you? If so, contact Michael Gray in the Membership Department to be added to the wait list for the Glen Echo Full Membership program. Our goal now is to see if there is an interest and a capacity within the MAC membership to further expand this program and relationship with Glen Echo. If significant interest exists, that would spur the next conversation with Glen Echo about what to do with the members on the waiting list and how to expand the program. If you’re not sure if you’re interested, but you’re a Diamond Club or Platinum Partner member, take advantage of your current reciprocal club privileges at Glen Echo and head over for a round of golf on a beautiful spring day, grab dinner or a drink, hang out at the pool, take the kids to the playground out there; find out if there is any applicability for you. We want to thoroughly test the waters to see if other MAC members are as excited about this opportunity as the 25 members who are

currently all in and taking full advantage. Speaking of excited members, construction is underway on Phase 1A and 1B of the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project. At this time, the budget numbers look good, and we’re on schedule to have Phase 1A and 1B completed by January. Phase 1A and 1B includes the expanded weight room and a yoga and barre studio on the mezzanine. Phase Two is still under concentrated study regarding the overall program needs and obtaining optimal space utilization. See page 18 for more information and some tentative drawings of a couple design concepts and space utilization ideas. Look for more to come as the Planning Committee and Board finalize the design. This is also an exciting time for the MAC as the Board of Governors transition. I greatly enjoyed celebrating and honoring the incoming and outgoing Presidents and Board members at the President’s Foundations’ Ball, and I want to express my sincere thanks to President Mike Schoedel, Tim Powers, Tim Slater, Talmage Newton, and Paul Shuff for their service and leadership. It has been an absolute pleasure working with you gentlemen, and all should be proud of the many accomplishments from these last three years. Thank you for your time, talents and love of the Club to position us for our very exciting future! See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Our goal now is to see if there is an interest and a capacity within the MAC membership to further expand this program and relationship with Glen Echo. If significant interest exists, that would spur the next conversation with Glen Echo about what to do with the members on the waiting list and how to expand the program.

MEMBERSHIP: 3, 2, 1, LAUNCH! By Ashley Hancock, Director of Membership Last year, the membership department introduced the phrase “closing the gap towards the cap,” meaning there are a limited number of memberships still available before a waiting list is enacted. Thanks to you, our dedicated MAC members, membership activity has been strong the last few months. In addition, pool season and our unbeatable summer camp programs are right around the corner! As touched on in the past few Cherry Diamond issues, the West Clubhouse will see an expansion and renovation in the coming years that will be broken down into several phases. This project will answer numerous member requests for additional exercise rooms, updated equipment, and much more! For example, Phase 1A and Phase 1B will feature an expanded weight

room in addition to a yoga/barre studio. As we embark on these member-mandated athletic improvements to transform our facilities to state-of-the-art condition, there is talk about raising our initiation fee in the near future, possibly in conjunction with Phase Two of this project. So, what does this mean for members? It means don’t wait; time is of the essence! It

is your right and privilege to invite family, friends, and colleagues into your Club and now is the perfect time. We want to ensure the individuals you desire to join our MAC family have the opportunity before the official waiting list begins. The MAC is on the move, and I encourage you to bring new members aboard for the journey!

A PRESIDENTIAL NIGHT

of Gratitude

On Saturday, April 7 the Missouri Athletic Club hosted the President’s Foundations’ Ball. This event was centered around four pillars: gratitude for the Club’s foundations’ supporters, honoring the current and incoming Presidents and Board of Governors for their service to the Club, the official launch of the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project, and recognition of Past President Kim Tucci as MAC Philanthropist of the Year. More than 200 people attended this wonderful event. Following a cocktail reception in the Art Lounge and photos on the red carpet,

attendees dined on a five-course dinner and danced the night away to one of the best live bands in the country, Nashville’s own The Downtown Band. The MAC’s three foundations boast separate missions but one common vision: to give back to the MAC and the surrounding community. This would not be possible without the support of the membership. tip:

One of the biggest mistakes in most female workout programs is the absence of heavy lifting. The addition of heavy lifts like squats, deadlifts, and pullups can really transform the body and build fundamental core strength. With proper guidance, performing these exercises will burn lots of calories, build lean muscle, and increase strength when performing other exercises.

Josh Kneff joined the MAC this year as a certified exercise physiologist. He obtained a bachelor of science degree in exercise science from Truman State University and is ASCM certified. Josh is passionate about fitness, holistic health and movement biomechanics. He also semi-competes in CrossFit and spent one year of PhD work studying muscle physiology. The 12-week weight loss challenge wrapped up on March 30. Twenty-three members competed against each other for the title of champion. The winner was determined by the highest percentage of body weight lost, making Chris Lawhorn come out on top with 15.8% (36.8 pounds) lost! He shares his testimonial below. “The main source of help in accomplishing this task was having my whole family participate. My wife and two teenage daughters worked to keep us all working out hard and eating right. Even my six-year-old was quick to remind me when a food choice “was not on the program, dad!” In particular, my wife Tracy was a tremendous source of motivation, and she did a great job on her own challenge. We were all the beneficiaries of our amazing trainer Courtney Hutt. She is the BEST! We all did personal training with her weekly, and often in groups of several family members training at the same time. We even had a few where all six of us trained together with Courtney. She also was a great advocate to eat well in addition to working out hard. Finally, our Club has the greatest members! The competitors were not competitors; they are friends, and we all pushed one another. Many participated in the challenge through the MAC Facebook group: Don’t Fret 2 Sweat. The daily posts from our members and weekly challenges from Courtney and Paul were a great resource. I never would have guessed how hard jumping rope for 10 minutes might be. It’s amazing how a “like” or nice comment from a fellow member (maybe even someone you don’t know well) can really push you when you run up against a wall in your training. This use of social media to help with the challenge was very beneficial and created many new friendships amongst us all!”

RACQUET SPORTS Bring the Heat

Club Racquetball Championship

TENNIS TIPS Everyone can improve their tennis game. Here are five quick tips for every player:

The MAC racquetball championship took place over Easter weekend, and the 14 participants had a great time! Tim Engelmeyer beat Charlie Willingham the first round 15-8; Charlie beat Tim in the second round 15-8; then Charlie was victorious in the tie-breaker 11-4.

Jr. Tennis Summer Camp JUNE 4-AUG. 3 Kids have an opportunity to learn tennis or hone their skills during the summer with excellent instruction from the MAC’s tennis pros. For more information and to register, login to the MAC website and navigate to the Junior Tennis page.

A World of Summer Camp It’s that time of year again: a sizzlin’ summer at the MAC! The 2018 season boasts an excellent lineup of programs, educational classes and top-notch sports clinics for children of any age. Parents can rest assured that their kids will receive the best tutelage available during their summer break! Check out the next page for the full range of programs offered. Have a great summer! 22 F Cherry Diamond F MAY 2018

1) Readiness and Balance – The two most important things that relate to every stroke! To be fully ready, take a split-step, small bounce or shuffle every time your opponent is about to strike the ball, making you a quicker player. Once you are about to swing, slow your feet down; there is no need to stop and hit, but instead, use your momentum to continue into the shot with control and balance. 2) Serving – Keep your chin up on the serve. This tennis 101 tip is easier said than done. To help make this happen, keep your eye on the ball until you see your racket. 3) Receiving Powerful Serves – Shorten your backswing but not your follow-through, or, shorten both and slice the return when necessary using your opponent’s power to return the ball. 4) Consistency – Stay in the points longer. Most players that win are usually players that make the fewest unforced errors. 5) Risk Taking – It’s a good part of winning but also a big part of losing for any player. Choose the right time and attempt great shots relative to your abilities. The right time is when you are well balanced and confident. Focus more on easy floaters because, between your excitement and increased racket speed, it is easy to swing too early.

MAC Salutes Basketball’s Best Brunson, Young and Bennett Honored at USBWA Banquet

Just one week after leading Villanova to college basketball’s national championship, Jalen Brunson was at the MAC to receive the Oscar Robertson Player of the Year Award. Members and guests filled the Missouri Room to honor the best in college basketball at the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Awards banquet presented by Lumiere Place Casino and Hotels.

Oklahoma sensation Trae Young, who was the first player in NCAA history to lead the country in both scoring and assists, won the Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award. University of Virginia’s Tony Bennett won the Henry Iba Coach of the Year award. Long-time referee Ed Hightower and legendary Mizzou coach Norm Stewart were honored with Lifetime Achievement awards.

Tom Ackerman of KMOX Radio did a Q&A with the honorees at the sponsors reception, and Mike Kelly emceed the awards banquet. The Club’s tradition of celebrating athletic excellence was enhanced by hosting this national banquet. With an outpouring of support, the MAC has made a strong case to become the permanent home for the banquet.

TRIVIA FOR A CAUSE On March 23, a sports trivia night was held in the Missouri Room, and a portion of the proceeds benefited the Charitable Society for Children. A silent auction (items ranging from Cardinals tickets, sports-themed baskets and sports memorabilia), 50/50 raffle, and a game of Dead or Alive helped raise more than $2,000 for the Sports Foundation benefitting the CSC. The event emcee, Peter Dunne, received major kudos for the trivia questions and donating some great silent auction items. Thank you to sponsors Nat Walsh (St. Louis Title) and Tim, Seamus, Sean and Bill McGowan (Rosalita’s) for supporting the event. Congratulations to Mark Niemeyer’s table that won first place, followed by Anthony Clarkson’s table with second place. HOOPS FOR HUMANITY As an ongoing effort to reach out to the community, the Sports Foundation, with the help of the MAC basketball leagues and Women’s Initiative Group, created an initiative to install basketball hoops at several Habitat for Humanity homes. The Sports Foundation celebrated its inaugural installation of a hoop on March 25. Several members and staff attended and gave back in hopes that their love for the game of basketball might be spread to others in the community. In addition to the basketball hoop, the MAC donated basketballs, extra nets, air pumps, jump ropes, hula hoops, Club apparel, and a Walmart gift card.

Failed Back Surgery. What Are My Options? When conservative therapies such as physical therapy, lifestyle improvement measures, and cortisone injections are exhausted, patients may be candidates for surgery. Many people will have surgery with great results. Unfortunately, some patients may not. Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) occurs when the surgical intervention fails to treat the patient’s spinal pain. This is a relatively common

problem we see on a daily basis. Many of these patients have had different types of spine surgeries without benefit, or worse, increasing their pain symptoms. Where do these patients go from there? Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) or dorsal column stimulation (DCS) is a type of implantable neuromodulation device that functions to interrupt pain signals in the body. This is done by placement of epidural leads or wires in the spinal canal which are connected to a generator or battery. The device remains constantly on interrupting pain signaling so that patients can function better and do activities without thinking about their pain. Patients may also be able

to reduce pain medication because of this. This can lead to a greatly enhanced quality of life with improved function. Spinal cord stimulation is not only for failed back surgeries. Other indications include chronic peripheral neuropathy (painful diabetic neuropathy, complex regional pain syndromes, etc), phantom limb pain, and axial back pain due to failed back surgery syndrome. If have have these issues, SCS might be a great option for you. See us down the street for an evaluation of your pain. We are located in the same plaza as Rosalita’s restaurant. DEBORAH WILLIAMS Deborah A. Williams is a professional artist who prefers to work outdoors, “en plein air,” capturing landscapes on location in natural light. Like many artists, Deborah views the creative process as a meditative practice that calms the nerves and provides clarity and a great sense of fulfillment. Her art reflects a love for architecture and landscapes. Her images are reminders of the fast-paced, PAGOTA CIRCLE BRIDGE disappearing world around us. Her medium of choice is soft pastels but also works in acrylics, oils, mixed media and photography. Deborah’s photographs and paintings are included in numerous private collections. She has won “plein air” event awards in Augusta, Mo., Kansas City, Mo. and Door County, Wis. Her art is featured on a wine label by Les Bourgeois Vineyards in Rocheport, Mo., and her photography has been sold by Hallmark stores.
