PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

November is upon us and with it brings some of the more noticeable changes in the year – the colored and fallen leaves, cooler air, and shorter days with longer nights. If you haven’t been around the West Clubhouse in the last couple of weeks, the winds of change are imminent, as we’ve begun construction on the widely publicized and anticipated 1903. To quote First Vice President, Chris Hyams, who has been the backbone of this project’s guidance and facilitation, inquiries have almost immediately transitioned from, “When are you getting started?” to “When will you be finished?” As the target date is fleshed out in the weeks and months ahead, one thing for certain is this Board’s unwavering commitment to a project that is completed both on-time and on-budget. A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of spending a few days on retreat with the Board as we visited several other clubs in Los Angeles. This annual process allows us to compare and discuss our doings with some of our peers. While there were a number of takeaways from this, the one that I kept coming back to was this – there is a reason we are recognized as a Platinum Club of America. Because we are doing a lot of things really, really well – among those are financial performance, stabilized membership and passionate leadership with a commitment to our future. The Missouri Athletic Club, while recognized nationally, holds a definable presence in our community. That tradition of excellence is something you should be proud of as a member of the MAC. November also marks the kickoff of our club’s most distinguished events and time-honored traditions. We will commemorate our veterans with our

annual luncheon on Nov. 5 and again play a major role in the Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 7. I encourage you to join us in saluting those who have served our country. One of our most cherished events, the Jack Buck Sports Awards honoring our Sports Personality of the Year, is just a month away. Don’t miss out on one of the best evenings at the club as this sells out quickly. The Hermann Trophy Award Banquet, honoring the nation’s top male and female collegiate soccer players, is just around the corner as well. With the Hermann Trophy Award’s continued acclaim nationally, coupled with the U.S. Women’s World Cup Championship, this year’s event promises unparalleled excitement. Sponsorships are available for both the Hermann Trophy Award and the Jack Buck Sports Awards, and the exposure from these events represents some valuable opportunities. Breakfast with Santa might very well be the most enjoyable event I have ever attended at the MAC. If you have children or grandchildren, nieces or nephews under the age of 10, treat them to an unforgettable experience. If you have attended, I don’t need to remind you of the feverish pace surrounding these reservations. As I type this, I am violating one of my own steadfast rules to never hype Christmas before Halloween has passed. However, given the look and feel of our clubhouse during the holidays, I am willing to make an exception. Quite simply, if you are not coming into our Downtown Clubhouse during the holiday season, you are short-changing your membership. Between our members’ efforts to construct the most impressive train display in St. Louis to our impeccably decorated lobby, there is not a more attractive setting during the holiday season. Don’t wait for the last minute, book your employee parties and staff lunches now. I hope to have the opportunity to share these coming months and upcoming events with you at the club.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

Dear Members: As we move into the holiday season, I can practically hear Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof belting out the lyrics to Tradition, “Tradition, tradition! Tradition!” The theme song rings loud and clear. From holiday and family traditions to local and cultural traditions to those here at the Missouri Athletic Club, we all have traditions that help define us. Recently, I enjoyed St. Louis’ local Halloween trick or treating rituals, which are a bit different from my experiences growing up in upstate New York. As a kid, my friends and I went house-to-house ringing doorbells, collecting bags of candy, and running around the neighborhood creating mischief well after dark. In our neighborhood, the standard response to those who didn’t answer the door or satisfy our sweet tooth with candy was to soap the windows. It’s what we did, and the mischief was part of our tradition. My wife, Allison, and I joined some MAC friends in the city to celebrate Halloween. We greeted trick or treaters and listened to their jokes or riddles before giving up the candy. The joke form of the “trick” was a little foreign to me, but the experience was so much fun. The adults were engaged in every line the kids delivered from punchlines like “BooBerry Pie” to riddles like, “What’s green and swims underwater?” Answer: a green fountain pen, of course! Everyone had a good chuckle at that one, and I promised the MAC members in the group that I would incorporate the joke into my column this month. Traditions like these are great. It was such a fun 6 F Cherry Diamond F NOVEMBER 2015

»

experience, and it’s great to see children, the next generation, enjoy and embrace the tradition. The same is true at the MAC. Traditions such as Trunk ‘R Treat and Breakfast with Santa are enjoyed and embraced by parents and their children year after year. Similar to how trick or treating has transitioned to trunk ‘r treating over the years (but still keeping the “trick” element of the jokes!), we’re tweaking the format of Breakfast with Santa slightly this year. Making use of our new website’s online reservation system, we hope to eliminate long lines the day of the event and tame the morning into a more orderly and pleasant experience for all who attend. This tradition will continue to evolve. Another traditional and noteworthy MAC event is the upcoming Veterans Day celebration. We have hosted the citywide parade for many years, which includes hosting the citywide address at Memorial Plaza following the parade and inviting the honoree and Grand Parade Marshal back to the club for a celebratory luncheon honoring our veterans afterwards. Also, in recent years, we’ve added a new tradition to the event. I have the honor of chauffeuring the Grand Marshal in a brand new red corvette as we lead the parade through the city. How cool is that? This year, I have the pleasure of driving General Frank J. Grass, a fourstar member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Bring your family or a group of friends and join the fun by riding in the parade on the MAC’s float. To reserve your spot on the float, contact Katie Maurer at 314-539-4402. The float does fill up. If we can’t get you on this one, then we’ll put you on the top of the list for the next one. Traditionally, St. Louis has a parade for just about every occasion, and the MAC loves to participate so have no worries. Coming up are a number of traditional holiday events from Thanksgiving brunch and dinner to Family Night with Santa, Holiday Brunch, Christmas Eve and Day dinners, and New Year’s Eve celebrations. As an added bonus, the clubhouses will be decorated to perfection for the holidays. It’s hard not to be in the holiday spirit when you see all of the holly, poinsettias, twinkling lights, and train display.

Stay connected to the club not only by joining in on these traditional events, but also by participating in the Holiday Spirit Instagram Contest. Social media is one of the many ways we disseminate information to our members and share the fun. Instagram is an awesome video and photo-sharing app that we just started using. Join the fun by participating in the contest. Share a photo of your favorite MAC holiday tradition for a chance to win an awesome prize package from the Pro Shop. Contest rules are on the website, but it’s really that simple. Also, look forward to the highly anticipated (and long-standing traditions) Jack Buck Sports Awards and Hermann Trophy banquets, which are on the jam-packed calendar. It’s awesome to be part of the MAC traditions that define our organization and will be around for future generations to enjoy. Don’t miss out on being part of it now. Engage in an existing tradition or create a new one here at the club. Either way, take the opportunity to create fond memories that you’ll enjoy for years to come. Finally, I am also happy to report that we have broken ground on 1903. Contracts were signed, and all the permits obtained. Our contract number for the bar came in just under our budget of $1,200,000. I want to extend many thanks to Governors Chris Hyams and Tripp Zumwalt for all of their hard work and expertise on this project. We found savings without sacrificing any quality or taking anything out of the project. Keeping with the theme, this is our tradition of finding the most qualified members to help with projects of this magnitude just because they love their club and want to make it better for all. Thank you both very much. As work begins, we plan to keep disruption to a minimum while maintaining services. I will report regularly on our progress to keep you as informed as possible. As always, there is a lot going on at the MAC, and I look forward to seeing you around the club!

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

»

Member Spotlight: John Pennington John Pennington is a very active member as well as a regular proposer of new members. Recently, Pennington brought his uncle, Michael Saracino, on board as his Platinum Partner. Both families have been loving the MAC ever since. CD: How long have you been a member of the MAC? JP: I have been a member for seven years. CD: Have you held any events at the club? If so, why did you choose the MAC? JP: We have held some small business and conference meetings, and family parties. We have also attended as guests and members to a number of fundraisers, weddings and special event parties. The culture, various settings and history, I believe, are attractive to a wide audience of people for the business, family, and recreational aspects – all of which the MAC is great in accommodating. CD: How have you utilized the club since joining? JP: I think we are a pretty typical family and enjoy most of what the MAC offers. I personally enjoy squash, basketball, and fitness. My wife, Genna, enjoys classes and fitness. My entire family utilizes the day care, MACtivities, day camps, and swimming clinics. I also regularly visit the club’s restaurants and bars, whether for business, family or fellowship. Often times, we use either clubhouse for or a starting or ending point for games, depending on what’s going on. CD: Have you joined any Clubs Within the Club? If so, which ones? If not, do you plan on joining any? JP: Not yet, but I have attended some of the events. I’ve also engaged in the club by serving on the Membership Committee, and I currently serve on the Financial Committee. CD: Have you brought any new members to the club? What advice would you give to fellow members in their recruitment efforts? JP: Yes, and I would tell current members to advocate for the club based on how they enjoy and utilize it. People follow when they are excited and enthused. I tell people to not treat it solely as a gym as there are a number of gym and fitness options in today’s world. Join it to use it, and use it regularly. If you see and utilize the MAC for its multiple facets, there’s no better place to join in St. Louis.

A Letter from the Director of Foundations

Cynthia Goudy Greetings Cherry Diamond readers! First of all, I want to thank all of the members and staff that I have met over the past couple months. The Missouri Athletic Club is truly a wonderful place to work, and I appreciate all of the warm regards. My time here at the club has been a time of discovery: discovering the mission of the MAC and the values of our members. Every member I have had the privilege to meet has shared with me how the MAC has added value to his or her life and for that I am grateful. The stories and history that have been shared with me are inspirational. In addition to getting to know the MAC, I have worked to understand the dynamics of the club’s three foundations. Each one has a unique mission that supports the success of the MAC. Past Governors Weil, Krause, and Beekman have been gracious in their knowledge and expertise of each of the three foundations. I have met with each of them, and together we will navigate a cohesive plan to generate a strong revenue stream for each of the foundations. As we forge ahead, the foundations will solidify a vision and agenda, and I look forward to creating a strong sense of philanthropy here at the club. Finally, continuing to pursue vibrant financials for each of these foundations is a top priority. A large component of this success is creating a legacy program. With the help of Wally Smith and Larry Absheer this continues to be transformational in the success of our future. I hope you share the same excitement as I do about all these wonderful opportunities that lie ahead. I am enthused to meet more members in the future as I continue to familiarize myself with all things MAC.

FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS The mission of the Foundation for the Arts is to assemble, collect, commission, display and maintain significant works of the arts. PRESERVATION FOUNDATION The mission of the Preservation Foundation is to preserve, rejuvenate and memorialize the history and historical architecture of the building occupied by the Missouri Athletic Club at 405 Washington Avenue. SPORTS FOUNDATION The mission of the Sports Foundation is to further encourage and recognize outstanding achievements in the field of athletics and, in connection therewith, to select for public recognition those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to and achievement in the fields of sports and athletics.

Lodging Hospitality Management Cherry Diamond F NOVEMBER 2015 F 11

An Extra Helping, P lease

The Missouri Athletic Club is known for its unmatched menu options and the delicious food created within its kitchens. The Cherry Diamond interviewed Executive Chef Bart Phillips and Chef/Food and Beverage Manager, Grant Higgs, the men behind the culinary madness.

Executive Chef, Bart Phillips CD: What interested you in the culinary world? BP: I always had some interest in it since my grandfather was a baker. When I was young, everything was made from scratch. So during high school I worked at a few restaurants, and I thought maybe there’s something more to this than what I’m doing. I wasn’t even sure at the time if this was going to turn into a career path or not. Back in 1980, I attended the only European-style apprenticeship program in the country, located in Hershey, Pa. We had a Swiss chef there, and he brought over a culinary program in which you would normally participate in Europe. I was judged by some of the most prestigious individuals in the European culinary industry.

bart phillips

CD: How long have you been working at the MAC? BP: I came to the club in 1998 and became Executive Chef in 2008 so around 17 years.

Downtown Holiday Menu Sneak Peek: Look for Ciabatta cinnamon apple and almond French toast for breakfast in the Jack Buck Grille as well as dinner offerings like chargrilled bison steaks, cheddar cheese roasted potatoes, cinnamon roasted pheasant and root vegetables. Short ribs, chicken pot pies and carved lamb tips will debut in the Sportsman’s Club. 12 F Cherry Diamond F NOVEMBER 2015

Chef Bart Phillips continued

CD: Before coming to the MAC, what were some of your previous places of employment? BP: Before I came to the MAC, I worked at the Adam’s Mark Corporate and Sheraton Corporate in Phoenix, Ariz., an Italian restaurant in New Jersey, and a French restaurant in Dallas, Texas. I slowly got tired of big cities so my wife and I decided to move to St. Louis to be closer to family. My culinary talents and skills are more geared towards hotel-oriented business. CD: What are some aspects that you love about your job? BP: What makes this place unique over a country club is that it’s a city athletic club. In my opinion, it’s more like a boutique hotel and with my background in hotels and resorts, I feel more comfortable. It’s nice because with hotels, customers come in and you never see them again. At resorts, you may see them a few times, but in a private club you get to see members everyday, and you build relationships. You learn what each member likes and you can personalize things for every individual. CD: Share your thoughts on why a good culinary team is important at the MAC. BP: A good culinary team, no matter where you are, is very important; different minds coming up with different ideas. My team and I brainstorm menus as trends continually change. I tend to be more traditional so when Greg came in, he shared his love of tapas and chophouse-style menus. Having a good team really brings in different creativity as well as well-rounded scope to the culinary department. CD: What is one of your favorite dishes to create? BP: There’s really nothing I dislike cooking. I enjoy frying eggs in the morning to trying new soup recipes, but I really do enjoy cooking Cajun and Mexican menus. Here at the MAC, there’s always something new popping up, which gives me a chance to use my creativity and imagination.

Chef/Food and Beverage Manager, Grant Higgs CD: What interested you in the culinary world? GH: Because I grew up on a farm in Nashville where everything was made from scratch and where the whole farm-to-table concept was the norm, I was interested in food from a young age. I actually got a business degree, but eventually decided that I didn’t want to sit behind a desk all day. I wanted to get into something a little more hands-on like what I was used to while growing up. Even though I had no official culinary training, I had some great mentors such as Chip Clark and Patrice “Poppy” Boely and I learned very quickly while working in a professional kitchen under French-trained Dean Pugel through my college years. I actually traveled to France a few times with Patrice Boely and that was an amazing experience.

grant higgs

West Holiday Menu Sneak Peek: Look for a braised lamb shank with rich, natural jus, rainbow carrots and horseradish whipped potatoes as well as a bone-in short rib with truffle mushroom risotto and shaved aged parmesan.

CD: How long have you been working at the MAC? GH: I began working at the MAC three years ago.

CD: Before coming to the MAC, what were some of your previous places of employment? GH: I started at Richland Country Club in Nashville as well as Belle Meade Country Club before coming to the MAC. I actually came to the club soon after Wally Smith became General Manager. I was looking for a new place to settle down, and I came to St. Louis in 2011 for the World Series. I thought it was a great city, and I decided to make it my new home. My first day on the job was Oct. 15, 2012. CD: What are some aspects that you love about your job? GH: The people. We have some great people here; characters from all walks of life. We have different cultures as well as representatives from all parts of the city. The diversity is just fun. It’s exciting to see how one person will do a dish as compared to the next. CD: Share your thoughts on why a good culinary team is important at the MAC. GH: A good culinary team is the backbone of this club especially because we don’t have a golf course. People come here for not only athletic reasons such as racquetball or squash, but also for the culinary offerings. CD: What is one of your favorite dishes to create? GH: I don’t have a favorite dish. I love to cook everything and right now I’m on a huge Asian kick.

Stay Tuned! When the 1903 bar and outdoor patio opens next year at the West Clubhouse, look for some exciting new menu items featured such as trendy small plates and country club and chophouse-style fare! Cherry Diamond F NOVEMBER 2015 F 13

This place knows how to throw a big event. Everything was taken care of and I didn’t know of any problems. I had my ceremony here as well. It was in the same ballroom as my reception. We had a cocktail hour in between in the downstairs Art Lounge and they flipped the ballroom effortlessly. The meal was delicious, warm and served with white-glove service. Everyone was friendly. I never heard anyone ask for more water or wine because it was already taken care of. I highly recommend the Missouri Athletic Club for your wedding venue. — Kim E. Wanted to let you know what a wonderful time everyone had at my parents’ 60th anniversary. They were thrilled with everything – food, service, atmosphere – no place like having a party at the MAC. Thank you for all the help with the planning and to everyone that worked the party, you are the best. — Donna K.

I grew up in the Missouri Room, going to events such as the Easter Brunch, Mother’s Day, Father and Daughter Dance, etc., so deciding to have my wedding there was an easy one. I cannot express in enough words how amazing everything was. From the wedding coordinating to the food/drinks and overall environment, it was a fairy tale. The catering team is incredible, and I highly recommend the MAC to anyone who wants a classic, fun wedding that people will talk about for years. — Erin W.

MAC Selects Matheny

Manager Guides Cards to Best Record in Baseball Cardinals’ manager Mike Matheny guided the Cardinals to a 100-win season, the National League Central Division championship and the best record in baseball. Matheny’s leadership has been recognized by MAC members as he has been selected the 2015 Sports Personality of the Year. The 2015 Cardinals overcame a lot of adversity to reach a lofty perch. The pitching staff lost ace pitcher Adam Wainwright and set-up reliever Jordan Walden for most of the season due to injuries. The middle of the lineup also suffered major injuries to Matt Holliday and Matt Adams. Matheny integrated young, unproven players like Tommy Pham, Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk into key roles, and the team continued to thrive throughout the season. This season, Matheny became the first manager in MLB history to guide his team to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons (2012-2015). Since taking over before the start of the 2012 season, he has led all Major League managers in wins. His book, “The Matheny Manifesto,” was published earlier this year and attracted national acclaim for its insights into youth sports. Tom Ackerman from KMOX Radio will serve as master of ceremonies at the Jack Buck Sports Awards Banquet. A limited number of sponsorship opportunities remain. Show your support of the MAC Sports Foundation while receiving prime banquet seating and an invitation to the VIP reception featuring the honorees by becoming a sponsor. Tennis Pros Attend Conferences, Bring New Knowledge to MAC MAC tennis pro, Max Shapiro, recently attended the USPTA World Conference in New Orleans, La. from Aug. 21-25 and was the only representative from St. Louis. The annual event is held to further the education of USPTA tennis pros across the world by offering new drills and ways to build tennis programs. “It was special getting to mingle and network with great tennis minds from around the world,” says Shapiro. “In particular, learning stroke production from the world-renowned Gigi Fernandez and Max Shapiro Rick Macci and watching Gigi Fernandez, a 17-time grand slam winner, teach a doubles clinic.” Kenny Powell, Director of Junior Tennis, attended the United States Tennis Association (USTA) High Performance Coaching Conference Aug. 3-5. The USTA selected 25 top tennis pros from across the country to participate in a three-day conference in New York City during the U.S. Open. Each morning, the group met in a conference room in Arthur Ashe stadium and learned the strategies, drills, and tactics necessary to develop the next great professional tennis players. After drills, the group watched the day’s matches. To be selected, participants had to achieve the highest USPTA certification, complete the USTA High Performance Coaching Program, and currently coach nationally-ranked players. “It was an outstanding opportunity to network with the USTA’s directors of player development and top coaches from across the country,” says Powell. “I was honored to be selected and am already implementing things I learned into our clinics here at the MAC.”

Artist of the Month Harry Weber

Harry Weber is this month’s featured artist in the Downtown Art Gallery. Following his education at Princeton University, Weber served six years in the U.S. Navy, including a year on river patrol boats in Vietnam where he compiled a compelling series of drawings chronicling his experiences. These are featured at a permanent display of military art on the USS Alabama. Weber is well-known for his sculptures, which are highly regarded for their sense of movement and vitality, and more than 100 have been installed across the country and abroad. His aim is to have his sculptural work show the same life and spontaneity as his sketches. His sculptures of famous sports figures are prominent features at 12 professional and amateur stadiums, including Busch Stadium, and in 2011, he was named the National Sports Artist of the Year. If you are interested in purchasing the work on display, contact Wendy Descher at 314-539-4438 or wdescher@mac-stl.org.

Employee Holiday Fund As the holiday season rolls around, the Missouri Athletic Club employees are always thankful to the club’s membership for the extra bonus from the employee holiday fund. The club is not forgetting, however, that you are currently investing in the 1903 bar and outdoor patio at the West Clubhouse, so the continued support of the club’s employees means even more than ever. In the November statement, please notice a voluntary contribution charge in the amount of $100, which will be allocated as follows: F $90 MAC Employee Holiday Fund F $2 MAC Preservation Foundation (tax deductible) F $2 MAC Foundation for the Arts (tax deductible) F $2 MAC Sports Foundation (tax deductible) F $2 MAC Charitable Society for Children (tax deductible) All of these contributions are voluntary. Enclosed with the member statement is a form, which can be used to adjust any of the above amounts, if desired. In the past, the Employee Holiday Fund appeal was distributed each fall, and the various foundation solicitations were distributed periodically throughout the year. Bundling these contributions saves time and resources for our members and the club’s accounting staff. This approach is a convenient and efficient way for members to thank employees for their service and to support the club’s charitable entities at the same time. Thank you for supporting the Missouri Athletic Club, its employees and foundations.

Honoring Our Veterans On Thursday, Nov. 5, in partnership with the Rotary Club of St. Louis, the Missouri Athletic Club will host its annual Veterans Day Commemoration to salute all those who have served our country and remember those who served in World War II, which ended 70 years ago, and the Fall of Saigon 30 years ago, which ended the conflict in Vietnam. The MAC honors veterans of the year, Jack Poitras, Vietnam War veteran and Cecil Brandenburgh, World War II veteran. Upon graduation from basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. in 1967, Poitras received advanced training in aircraft engine repair at Fort Hustis, Va. He then worked on the OV1 – Mohawk Aircraft, MOS 68C20. He was wounded in action in Cantho, Vietnam, where 15 helicopters were destroyed. Poitras was rescued by a Navy Seal while under hostile fire. He was nominated for a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Brandenburgh, serving as part of the National Guard, played a role in the liberation of Europe during the D-Day invasion in June 1944. He continued his service to the American fighting forces throughout France, into Belgium and finally Germany serving in the European theatre until the time of Germany’s surrender in the spring of 1945. He was honorably discharged from the service at the end of the war. Brandenburgh recently celebrated his 95th birthday this past August.

Around Town with the Forever Young Club The Forever Young Club enjoyed a tour of historic sites in Florissant on Sept.15. The first stop was Taille de Noyer, which was once an Indian trading post and then the hunting lodge of John Mullanphy, an Irish immigrant who became a wealthy merchant and philanthropist in St. Louis. Taille de Noyer was the country home of Mullanphy’s descendants until the Florissant Valley Historical Society acquired it in 1961 and preserved it since. The group viewed other historic sites on the way to Hendel’s Market Café. The café building was erected circa 1873 and ran as a grocery store by the Hendel family from 1915 until 1994. A delightful lunch was served in the main dining room and the group was joined by Mayor Tom Schneider. He

welcomed them to Florissant and talked about the city and its history. Florissant was first settled in the late 1700s prior to the nation becoming independent with the first city government established in 1786. Although the Spanish owned the area at the time, French settlers built a typical French village. A significant number of the 250-year-old buildings survive. The next stop was Old St. Ferdinand’s Shrine. The convent wing was built in 1819 and the church in 1820, making it the oldest catholic church building between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. The convent is where Sister Rose Philippine Duchesne founded her school for girls. Father Pierre-Jean De Smet, the beloved black robe of Indian nations, was ordained in the church in 1827.

Sweet Babies provides families with newborns clothing and other items of necessity to keep them warm, comfortable and safe when they leave the hospital. Facts About Sweet Babies: F The organization donated more than 40 Pack-n-Plays in 2014 to families who did not have a safe environment for their baby to lay or sleep. F The Sweet Babies “Bag” program provides more than 30 items of clothing, diapers, blankets, wipes, socks and more packaged in a bag and given to needy families. In 2014, more than 640 bags, 40,000 pieces of clothing and other items were donated to families in need. 30 F Cherry Diamond F NOVEMBER 2015

The FYC Looks at Vietnam At this month’s meeting, the Forever Young Club will hear the presentation “A 21-Year-Old Recruit Goes to Vietnam,” by Ron Sansone who volunteered for the Marine Corps and served 13 months in DaNang. Aided by his son, MAC member Tim Sansone will recall his experiences and share somewhat unusual conclusions on the Vietman era. Today, Sansone runs a construction business in Pacific, Mo. Join in at 11:30 a.m. at the West Clubhouse on Friday, Nov. 20. Ron Sansone

» 1975 Sports Personality of the Year MAC past

With the Sports Personality of the Year highlighted in this issue, it makes sense to travel back 40 years ago to that same event. The candidates in 1975 were Don Coryell (Cardinals football head coach), Jim Hart and Terry Metcalf (both Cardinals football players), Al Hrabosky (MLB player for St. Louis Cardinals) and Jimmy Connors (former world number one tennis player). Don Coryell emerged as the overwhelming choice for the Sports Personality of the Year. Two main ingredients lending to the Big Red’s success were Cardinals players Jim Hart and Terry Metcalf. Coryell received his award on Feb. 10, 1975. Don Coryell, 1975 sports personality of the year
