PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

Service and Leadership I thought it appropriate to defer half of my column this month to first Vice President Tracy Beckette, who, among other great accomplishments, is a retired Brigadier General. That’s right, he’s a Governor and General – or as we call him “The Governor General.” How cool is that? It is truly an honor to serve alongside someone of Gov. Beckette’s pedigree. He is an immense help to me and an incredible resource for all things leadership. This month, we celebrate our great veterans and the rich tradition of military history at our Club. Countless MAC members over the years have served our country in all branches of the military. In fact, I’m extremely proud to say that there are three members of our current MAC Board who are military veterans: Keith Phoenix, Tim Slater, and General Beckette have all served our country. In addition, Gov. Andrew Carter graduated from West Point. Thank you! No surprise that these men who understand service and sacrifice would then volunteer their time, energy, and resources to serve the MAC. I think service and leadership go hand and hand. Isn’t part of leadership rallying a group of men and women into action to better a cause or an idea? In this case the “cause” is the MAC. I see it on display everyday

in my Board interactions. I see a group of 15 people who are committed to the long-term success of our Club, and I am honored to be a part of it. At time of print, our senior class will be six months into our final year of Board service, the halfway point. It goes by FAST. As our term heads toward home, my mind goes to new Club leaders. The nominating committee is charged with finding potential candidates for the 2017 Board class. Have you considered running for the Board, but put it off for whatever reason? I would encourage you to talk with Nominating Committee Chairs Brent Kaniecki and Dean Eggerding. They can answer questions for you about the process and help you make an informed decision. And let me dispel the myth about “how much time it takes.” The burden of long hours and thankless jobs falls to our first-class MAC staff. Don’t let time be your excuse. Did General Patton say he didn’t have time to move his Third Army tank division through Europe to eradicate the Nazis? No, he didn’t, and neither should you! Ok, I got carried away there, but please consider serving your Club. We need new leaders to step forward. In closing, please attend the Veterans Day Commemoration on Thursday, Nov. 10. It is the one MAC event each year that makes all other MAC events possible. If you can’t attend, please THANK a veteran for their service. As General Beckette said, “freedom isn’t free.” Thank God for our brave men and women who served on our behalf. In service,

From Gov. Tracey Beckette, First Vice President Fellow members, 98 years ago, Armistice Day was established to commemorate the end of hostilities to World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Today, we call this national holiday Veterans Day. Nov. 11, 2016 is Veterans Day; it is a day of tribute, reflection, and celebration as we honor all those service members who have served and who continue to serve to preserve our freedom because “freedom is not free.” Veterans Day is a day to celebrate the selfless service and self-sacrifice of these American heroes who are also our national treasures. In 2011, at West Point, Robert Gates summed up the value of Veterans Day from the Revolutionary War through Iraq and Afghanistan, “a tiny sliver of America has achieved extraordinary things under the most trying circumstances.” On

Board of Governors

Nov. 11, we will recognize that the veterans of all our nation’s wars – World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan – all share the same blood and sacrifice. The inscription on the badge worn by the guards of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier “Peace, Victory, Valor” summarizes the commitment of our veterans and those who are still serving. I urge everyone to gather on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016 to celebrate and honor our veterans at a luncheon hosted by the MAC and the Rotary Club of St. Louis. Our keynote speaker is General Darren W. McDew, Commander U.S. Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base. More details about this luncheon and a list of all MAC members of the military can be found on pages 16-17.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

Every October, the Board of Governors and I journey to other city clubs for a board retreat to better understand their best practices and glean new ideas to enhance the membership experience at the MAC. The Board benefits greatly from the retreat and personally covers their expenses as an investment in their commitment to you. This year, we stayed at the Fort Worth Club, which is one of our reciprocal clubs. We also visited three other private clubs in the area while we were there. We toured their clubhouses and spoke with members of their boards, general managers and staff to get a glimpse of their strengths, weaknesses, programs and unique personalities. Of the four clubs, one stood out as the epitome of “platinum,” the polished apple, if you will. Undoubtedly, what differentiated it from the others was its staff. This club had clearly invested in its people and their professional development. Their general manager had served the club for 34 years and many of the staff were tenured. They were a cohesive group who all understood the bigger picture, and their enthusiasm spoke volumes about the high level of caring service they provided to members and guests. Taking a step back, in addition to bringing back good ideas to implement at the MAC, another great thing about his retreat was reinforcing the things that we do right. I am proud to report that we’re investing in our fantastic people. After taking a quick inventory of our staff and their development, here are some of their more recent endeavors: Our CFO, Larry Absheer, founded the City & Athletic Club Financial Executives (CACFE) organization, which just celebrated its 20th year. From within this group, Larry mines best practices from private clubs across North America and implements them at the MAC. He also sits on the advisory board for Jonas, our accounting software developer. The Club’s

»

annual audit has received high marks from our CPAs in large part thanks to Larry. Last year, they reported that after auditing nearly 380 clubs across the country, the MAC’s financial statements were among the best they had seen. As I’m writing this, Pam Roth, our Accounting Manager, is attending the Hospitality Financial & Technology Professional (HFTP) conference, where she serves on the board of the Club Financial Exchange, which is by invitation only and the best of the best. Darrin Harnetiaux, our West Clubhouse Manager, is a member of the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA). He recently spent a week in Atlanta at Georgia State attending a Business Management Institute to continue his professional development in the private club industry. He came back energized and full of new ideas for the MAC. Executive Chef Grant Higgs from the West Clubhouse and Tamer El-Adawy our Downtown Food and Beverage Director recently returned from attending another BMI at Michigan State where they teamed up to learn general manager and chief operating officer concepts taught by industry leaders in this intense program, and were tested on the subjects at the week’s end. They then stayed at the Detroit Athletic Club, another one of our reciprocal clubs. While there, they received a private dinner and extensive tour of the facilities with staff sharing ideas once again. This is another wonderful platinum club partner that I highly recommend checking out. In July, Patti Cundiff, our Director of Membership Development, attended the Private Club Marketing Professionals (PCMP) conference in Philadelphia visiting the Union League, which is the number one private city club honor this year amongst our peers. New to our Membership

Department, Morgan Franke and Amy Freeman, our Content Marketing Manager in our Communications Department, recently attended the Professional Club Marketing Association (PCMA) conference in Kansas City. Amy, Patti and Morgan are sharing ideas to create more awareness about the MAC to our prospective members, and realigning our on-boarding process for new members as a result. Jeff Tuhro, our Athletic Director, recently attended another City Athletic Club Managers conference, where a few years ago, he was recognized as Club Athletic Director of the Year. He is also past president of their organization. On his staff, Rick Schneider, Paul Helfrich, Courtney Hutt and Joy Holdmeier are attending the local CMAA meeting at Bellerieve where they’ll learn more about athletics and programming. Paul and Courtney also attended the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) conference in Florida last April, and they brought back a number of great ideas for the MAC, which you will hear more about as athletic upgrades develop. I share all of this with you not just to tout some of the accomplishments of our awesome staff, but also to illustrate your Board’s commitment to our staff, which in turn, improves the workplace and benefits you, our members. Without a doubt, the hallmark of a platinum club is seeing its people as a key asset and proving the resources for their growth. j18 We all thank you for allowing us to be lifelong learners as our goal is to serve you well and make the MAC the best it can possibly be.

2016 ANNUAL VETER ANS DAY

Commemoration

11:15 a.m. – Exhibits and cash bar 12 p.m. – Lunch and program $27.50 per person, inclusive Downtown Clubhouse Register online or call 314-539-4470.

On Thursday, Nov. 10, the MAC, in partnership with the Rotary Club of St. Louis, will host its annual Veterans Day Commemoration to salute all those who have served our country – remembering especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. 2016 VETERAN OF THE YEAR – MAJOR GENERAL BILL BRANSON, USAR, RETIRED General Bill Branson served as the Commander, 102nd Army Reserve Command, in St. Louis and completed his military service as Deputy Commander (RC), Fifth U.S. Army. As a civilian, he retired as Executive Vice President and General Manager after a long career with Hoffmeister Mortuaries. Gen Branson began his military career as an enlisted soldier, was selected for officer candidate school in 1952 and continued to rise through the ranks. He maintained a strong personal interest in the training and welfare of soldiers throughout his years of service. VETERAN ACHIEVEMENT AWARD – COLONEL JIM DONAHOE, USAF, RETIRED

Colonel James B. Donahoe currently serves as the President of the Board of the Fisher House in St. Louis. The St. Louis VAMC Fisher House serves over five hundred families of veterans and active duty military personnel. Its 20 guest suites provide a “home away from home” for families of veterans receiving care at the St. Louis VA Medical Center and families of active duty personnel who have loved ones in other area facilities. Prior to his retirement in 2006, Col Donahoe served for more than 15 years with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

He was appointed as a member of the Senior Executive Service (SES) and Director of the Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) on Feb. 10, 1991. Prior to his selection as Director of the VCS, Col Donahoe served in the U.S. Air Force for more than 30 years, retiring with the rank of colonel. From 1984 to 1991, he held command positions with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) in the Pacific Theater. GUEST OF HONOR AND KEYNOTE SPEAKER – GENERAL DARREN W. MCDEW General Darren W. McDew, Commander, U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), is the guest of honor and keynote speaker this year. USTRANSCOM is the single manager for global air, land and sea transportation for the Department of Defense.

Veteran’s Day Parade The St. Louis Regional Veteran’s Day Parade is on Saturday, Nov. 5. The Missouri Athletic Club is proud to celebrate veterans throughout the year, but especially on Veterans Day. The Club’s Veteran of the Year candidates ride with the MAC’s Veterans Day committee in Corvettes provided by the Looking Glass Corvette Club of Highland, Ill. This group’s mission is to promote interest in Corvette ownership and operation, and to turn that enthusiasm into social activities that encourage camaraderie and lasting friendship. We thank them for supporting the MAC and our veterans today.

Please see the next page for a list of all MAC members who have served in the U.S. Military. 16 F Cherry Diamond F NOVEMBER 2016

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Âť

HOME

Improvement 360 Before beginning a home improvement project of any kind, keep these tips and tricks in mind. FIND THE RIGHT CONTRACTOR The best contractors usually come by word of mouth, but if that luxury isn’t available, research online. There are some great websites such as homerenovationguide.com. Also, make sure to get several referrals before signing any agreements! Before deciding on a contractor, ask some of the following questions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

18 F Cherry Diamond F NOVEMBER 2016

What is the project schedule? Who will be working onsite every day? How will you communicate with me? Are there any concerns about the project? Will I be notified when I need to make a decision? How do I reach you after hours? When do I need to be available to meet? What kind of documentation will I receive once the project is completed?

RESEARCH Thoroughly researching and having a good vision will make the entire process easier. Clip ideas out of magazines, talk to friends who have done similar remodels or projects, search stores and online for products and inspiration, or hire a designer.

SPACE PLANNING Get a good overview of the space to be renovated and note any prominent features that distinguish it. Look at the assets of the space and determine how to use them best.

KEEP TO THE BUDGET Do the homework necessary before beginning on a project and talk to a friend who has done a similar project or renovation. Aim for saving up the necessary funds without having to borrow, and remember to tack on an additional 20% to the total expense for any things that will inevitably spring up. During the project, regularly check in with the contractor to make sure everything is on budget.

BE REALISTIC Dreaming about the perfect room or design is the beginning of any renovation or project, but it’s important to also be realistic about how it can be achieved within the

budget at hand. For example, perhaps that certain tile floor will have to be accomplished later down the road when the budget allows. Living beyond one’s means is desirable, but not smart. If a certain aspect of the renovation or project can’t be nixed, see if the renovation can be completed in stages to allow for better budget adherence.

RENOVATE FOR THE FUTURE Sticking to classic designs is always safe; trends are for accessorizing, not for a renovation. Investing in quality finishes will ensure that the renovation remains relevant long into the future.

During a project’s planning phase, have the entire design and construction team engaged; don’t wait until plans have been finalized to engage your contractor, or until construction begins to engage your

CHECK IN EVERY DAY Even with an incredibly trustworthy and competent contractor, try to make daily on-site check-ins. Mistakes happen so it’s important to be present if or when they do. The longer a mistake goes unseen, the more expensive it will be to fix.

interior design team. Each team member will have valuable suggestions but trying to incorporate them

HAVE FUN Although home renovations and projects require a lot of time, attention and money, remember to see them as fun and enjoyable! Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a space transformed by excellent design decisions and expert craftsmanship.

BLUES FORWARD SCORES SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR St. Louis Blues sniper Vladimir Tarasenko has scored a lot of big goals since breaking into the National Hockey League in 2012. The dynamic forward has now netted the top award in St. Louis sports. In voting by MAC members, “Vladi” has been selected the 2016 Sports Personality of the Year. During the 2015-16 season, Tarasenko had a breakout season as he earned a trip to the All-Star game. His 40 goals ranked 4th in the NHL. Tarasenko helped the Blues reach the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2001. Tarasenko has continued to show that he is one of the most prolific goal scorers in hockey at the start of the 2016-17 campaign. He scored four goals in the first four games of the season.

The electrifying Russian with the wicked shot is poised to become one of the best ever to wear the Blue note. He has already scored more than 100 career goals by the age of 24. In an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the greatest Blues player in history sees more big things in store for Tarasenko. “He is unselfish, has a very high hockey IQ and has a cannon for a shot,” Brett Hull said. “He’s going to be a star because of his skills.” Tarasenko will be honored at the Jack Buck Awards banquet on Monday, Dec. 5. Tom Ackerman from KMOX Radio will serve as master of ceremonies. A limited number of sponsorship opportunities remain. Your business can show support of the MAC Sports Foundation while

receiving prime banquet seating and an invitation to the VIP reception featuring the honorees. Contact Jim Wilson at 314-539-4488 for sponsorship details.

JUNIOR AWARDED SQUASH SCHOLAR AWARD Congratulations to Connie Gonzalez Navarrine for receiving the 2015-2016 U.S. Squash Scholar Athlete Award. This prestigious award recognizes Connie’s achievements both in the classroom and on the court. Director of Squash, Adam Bews shares some insights on Connie’s success below. Q. How has Connie improved over the last two seasons? A. She has been working so hard on her game for the last two years. She started playing bronze events in the Midwest and has quickly risen to #2 in the region for U17 girls. Connie is now at #75 in the country, and we are starting to travel more around the U.S. to compete. Q. What are some key factors that have played a role in Connie’s success? A. Connie participated in the MAC’s Elite Squash program and summer camps

for two seasons. I instruct two private lessons a week with her, and she has been training at the Downtown Clubhouse with Courtney Hutt once a week. The combination of private classes, clinics and fitness workouts has really helped her rise to another level. Q. What are some of Connie’s qualities that have helped her achieve her goals? A. Connie is a really hard worker; she arrives 30 minutes early for lessons and clinics just to do some on-court solo work and practice. She is smart on and off the court. She keeps good grades and does really well balancing her busy squash schedule with her school work. Often, she will take a lesson, do her homework at the courts, and then play a match after. Finally, she always wants to learn. She watches squash on TV and always asks questions to perfect her technique. It has been a pleasure working with Connie over

GONZALEZ IN ACTION ON THE SQUASH COURT.

the last two years. I have seen her game improve incredibly and have gotten the chance to get to know her and her family. She is a prime example of how dedication and hard work can help you reach your goals. Connie is still a junior at MICDS so we have almost two full seasons to work on her game before she leaves for college.
