from the president I hope you have your seat belt on because the next two months are going to be CRAZY FUN at the MAC! There is so much happening. Here is a snapshot: F New functional training room on 5M at the Downtown Clubhouse is complete. Sign up for one of the many new classes. F The old judo room on the 11th floor of the Downtown Clubhouse is being remodeled and will be finished by mid-November. No excuse to not work off that turkey. F Repairs were made and a new asphalt overlay was applied to the West Clubhouse’s parking lot. F Our planning sessions with the Board of Governors, various committees and task forces occurred to map out new improvements for the next three to five years.

F Designs and costs are being updated, which will provide a roadmap for upgrading the fitness areas at the West Clubhouse. F Make reservations for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals at both locations. F Get a drink with Santa at the Downtown Clubhouse on Dec. 4. F Have breakfast with Santa and your kids on Dec. 10 at the West Clubhouse. F Attend the Veterans Day lunch on Nov. 9 and the parade on Nov. 11. F Enjoy the Apollos’ Fall Concert on Nov. 17. F Please don’t miss the 48th Annual Jack Buck Sports Awards on Dec. 11. We all like a good party, and we love to celebrate. However, as you attend the many MAC functions during the next two months, please take time to remember our many

veterans who have served and protected our country throughout the last 240+ years. Many of those men and women did not get to enjoy a turkey dinner at home or at the MAC. Those dedicated soldiers were not able to ring in the new year with their friends. Since the mid-1920’s, we have set aside one day to honor all the veterans who have served this country. Maybe it’s time to add more days like Nov. 11. They definitely earned it, and we should not stop honoring them. Still having FUN,

T H AN K YO U Too often I forget how blessed I am and fail to thank the individuals responsible for making my life great. This month, as we celebrate Thanksgiving Day, make sure you set aside time to express your thanks to all those people that help make this a wonderful life. Here is a snippet of my appreciation: F Thank you to my parents for giving up so much to make sure I had a good education and reminding me to serve others first. F Thank you to my wife Alyson and two children for always supporting me in my endeavors that take me away from family time. F Thank you to the brave men and women who have served or are serving in the

military. Your sacrifice has provided me the opportunity to live in this great country. That sacrifice alone makes me want to stand proud every time I see our flag or hear our national anthem. Thank you to all my teachers and mentors. I’m not sure how I could have made it in this world without your tutelage. Thank you to our Board of Governors. Your dedication and talents are tremendous. Thanks to all the past presidents and governors. You have helped create a legacy and a Club that creates memories for all ages. Thank you to Wally Smith and our executive team for their professionalism

and tremendous talent in managing the day-to-day activities of the MAC. F Thank you to all our employees for the over-the-top service and commitment to excellence. F Thank you to our elected officials. While we may complain or disagree with their politics, serving our country in any manner is a noble profession. “Thank you” is a powerful message; please use it. Blessings to you and your families this Thanksgiving,

from the general manager Congratulations are still in order for the record-breaking 2017 fiscal year. In particular, I want to highlight one key area: membership; our primary bucket. The fiscal year ended on Aug. 31 with an increase of 72 net new members, which is believed to be the highest membership increase in more than 11 years. While there are many contributing factors as to why these members joined the MAC, to put it very simply, they wouldn’t be part of the MAC’s illustrious membership without the nearly 330 proposers and seconders who were listed in the October issue of the Cherry Diamond magazine. I imagine many of you will add your name to this list during the 2018 fiscal year, and here’s why. Last year, after taking a close look at the MAC’s facilities, our capacity to offer a Platinum Club experience for every member on every occasion, and our financials, the Board of Governors voted to cap the membership at 2,500 members, which will ultimately ensure an ongoing quest for a quality membership experience over membership quantity. With goals in place for 2018, the Membership Department and Committee are actively working towards closing the gap between the current roster and the cap. So, there is an ongoing quest for new members. There will always be attrition, and it will always be our membership’s responsibility and privilege to propose new members. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives us the right to peaceably assemble, or as some say, the right to association. We have the constitutional right to gather and associate with like-minded people, and the MAC is an organization created for you to do just that. Since its inception, membership at the Missouri Athletic Club has been by invitation-only.

Meaning, you must invite those that you want to socialize and dine with, compete against in our gyms, and do business with to be part of your Club. Always have the proposer privilege top of mind, and let candidates know that the MAC is on the move. Several of the new of the initiatives are the new functional training room on 5M at the Downtown Clubhouse, which has been hopping with activity and new faces since it opened in late September. The larger and more robust training room on the 11th floor is on-schedule to open towards the end of November, and members are already buzzing about it. At the West Clubhouse, you should start to see news of several improvements to the fitness center around the first of the year, which will make the Club highly competitive with other studios and gyms in the area. Stephen Covey, the author of Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, says start with the end in mind, which is exactly what your Club’s leaders are doing. We’ve employed Steve Burns of V Three Studios LLC, the architect who designed the 1903 bar, to help us repurpose space at the West Clubhouse so it addresses the Club’s long-term needs. The 1903 bar raised the standard of what a Platinum Club experience should feel like for MAC members, and our goal is to emulate that standard in all our projects moving forward. Going back to the membership bucket because it’s so important, I’d like to characterize and do a shout out to the proposers and seconders who internally we call our Club’s heroes. These proposers are the members who understand the importance of inviting like-minded peers who exemplify our mission statement of “business, professional and civic leaders and their families” to membership. When our hero

proposers propose a new member, they know that they’re endorsing a person of character to be a contributing member to both the Club and the MAC’s traditions and foundational pursuits. Once the new member has been invited to join our membership, the proposer heroes essentially make a commitment to mentor and properly indoctrinate that new member into the Club. The MAC staff and Board of Governors reach out to new members throughout their first year to help engage them, but the proposers and seconders with the personal relationships are much more effective. The heroes introduce the new member to fellow members; they help align the member’s interests with the Club’s offerings; and they act as a Club ambassador and mentor as the new member gets acclimated. Thank you to the Club’s proposers and seconders, especially those heroes who act as an ambassador and mentor. Thank you to the active members who not only find fun and value within the Club, but also have invested in it as a lifestyle. Finally, thank you to the members who are looking for the new members who will use the Club in the future whether that be the next generation of family members, a neighbor, a co-worker, or a friend. When you add your name to the FY 2018 proposer list, become one of our heroes; be an ambassador for the Club and a mentor to your new member friends. You are keeping “the MAC on the move.” See you at the Club!

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

from the director of new opportunities The recent survey asked members why they joined and retain their membership at the Missouri Athletic Club. The following reasons were identified as “somewhat important” or “very important.” F Connections to other members (79% join; 81% retain) F Banquet and meeting facilities (60% join; 64% retain) F Networking opportunities (59% join; 62% retain) Recently, a new feature was added to the MAC’s website, which will help foster connections and business networking opportunities. Members can now search the online Member Directory by member company and identify all members who have reported that as their place of business. The online Member Directory is a private database available only to MAC members and staff. Consider this: Research has shown that people do business not only with people that they “like” but also with people of

“like affiliations.” Since its inception, one part of the MAC’s mission has been to be the premier social club for business, professional and civic leaders in the St. Louis region. This new feature allows MAC business professionals to: Efficiently make business contacts. Instead of going through the annually printed member roster and painstakingly reviewing each entry for company name and address, members can now quickly and easily search for reputable member companies online. Ultimately, the hope is to initiate more commerce between members and facilitate more professional connections. After making that business connection, invite your fellow MAC member to a business meeting at the MAC! Pssstt… Also, consider joining the MAC Business Development Group, and attend an upcoming Speaker Series for even more exposure!

Acquire member-referrals. The MAC’s staff regularly receives inquiries from members and guests looking for potential MAC vendors and business partners, and members typically recommend other members to each other. Take some time to browse the member directory and search by company name to see how you can connect, meet and partner with fellow members. To access this functionality, simply login to the MAC website and click on the search tab at the top of the Member Directory. See page 28 for step-by-step instructions. Once you’ve identified a member who works at a company of interest to you, reach out and schedule a meeting at the Club! For more information or if you would like help with scheduling your next business meeting, please contact me.

Crossing the River: The Illinois Initiative Since 1903, the MAC’s mission has been to be the premier athletic, dining and social club for business, professional and civic leaders and their families in the St. Louis region. This includes the Club’s neighboring state of Illinois. MAC member Carl Winters and Membership Senior Advisor Patti Cundiff are working together on an initiative to promote MAC membership to Illinois residents, especially those who work in St. Louis. The Downtown Clubhouse is a prime location for those who live across the river and work downtown or in the surrounding city. The Club is hoping to attract more of those individuals, and asks the membership to assist with this endeavor. Recommend the Club to Illinois friends, family and co-workers, and boast about its amazing athletics, fitness, dining and social offerings. A surface warfare officer, Davidson has deployed across the globe in frigates, destroyers, cruisers and aircraft carriers. VETERAN LIFETIME DEDICATION AWARD – MAJOR FRANK TUCKER Major (Ret.) Frank Tucker is a veteran of service in both the Active Army and the Army Reserve. On active duty, he served at Fort Ord, California and Bangkok, Thailand. He served 20 years with the 102nd Army Reserve Command in a variety of units and positions. After eight years enlisted service, he received his commission as a 1st Lieutenant. Frank received numerous awards and decorations. In civilian life, Frank worked as a Public Affairs Specialist for the Army Reserve. Later he worked in human resources and managing units. At the time of his retirement, he was the chief civilian technician for the 329th Quartermaster Battalion. He is a Life member of the Missouri State Historical Society and a member of the Missouri Historical Museum in St. Louis. He is the Vice President of Public Affairs for the St. Louis Gateway Chapter of the Association of the United States Army and the Publicity Officer for the Greater St. Louis Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.

VETERAN OF THE YEAR – G. PATRICK MURPHY G. Patrick Murphy, MAC member, enlisted in the USMC at the age of 17 in 1966. His active duty service included an extended tour in Vietnam as an AntiTank Assault Specialist, which entailed hostile fire exposure in the heaviest combat zones located in-country. He was discharged of his duties with valor and distinction, receiving, inter alia, the Vietnam Service Medal (with two clusters), the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation and Good Conduct Medal. After a highly successful career as a trial lawyer, including many cases for pro bono clients, he was appointed to the federal bench as a United States District Judge for the Southern District of Illinois, which he retired from in 2013. Since active military service, Judge Murphy has demonstrated a remarkable fidelity to his brother Marines. He spearheaded efforts to establish and sustain a reunion of his combat unit, Kilo Company, Third Battalion, 1st Marines, which is known for its distinguished fighting record dating back almost to the origin of the Corps.

VETERANS DAY PARADE The MAC will be participating in the Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11. Come out and watch at noon!

S E R V I N G U P Family Fun

The Stauffer/Gross family lives for tennis and makes every moment count on the courts. Tennis is the heart and soul of the Stauffer/Gross family, and these relatives and MAC members are not shy about showing their enthusiasm for the sport out on the courts. Both families became members because of the Club’s family-friendly reputation, fantastic tennis programs, and the camaraderie among adults and kids. “Honestly, we joined because we were spending so much time watching our grandkids do all their activities here, especially tennis,” says Donna Stauffer, grandmother to the Gross children. “We wanted to get involved in the tennis program after watching and listening to the MAC’s outstanding pros give lessons and run clinics.” Donna Stauffer, tennis coach at Lafayette High School for 23 years, and her husband Scott, former tennis coach and college player, have played all their lives and met during a mixed doubles match. After joining the MAC three years ago, the Stauffers’ love of tennis continued to grow in new ways. They don’t play as much as they used to, but they enjoy watching their grandchildren play, improving their competitive strategy and health. Donna notes that engaging in the MAC programs and gaining knowledge from the pros as they instruct her grandkids has been helpful not only to her game but also to her physical wellbeing. “Listening to the MAC pros give technical instruction and discussing strategy reinforces 16 F Cherry Diamond F NOV 2017

what we already know and motivates us to play harder and better,” she says. “And Scott Stutz has been instrumental in helping me work my way back after an injury and a surgery.” Her husband Scott adds that their tennis participation is more recreational now and is something that keeps the couple healthy and active. Matt Gross and his wife Ashley, daughter to Scott and Donna Stauffer, joined the MAC in 2010 primarily for the familyoriented offerings. They quickly zeroed in on the excellent tennis instruction offered for adults and kids. Their three children, Emerey, Adelyn and Brady, began playing tennis in their grandparent’s basement at age two and love the sport. Matt and Ashley quickly enrolled them in the junior tennis program, and they have exceled due to the top-notch instruction and the good balance between fun and competition. “Where I’ve seen my kids excel,” notes Matt, “is when they’re playing at a pretty competitive level, but they love the sport because of the instructors that they’re working with, and [the MAC] does a good job matching instructors with kids’ personalities … I know they’re in the right hands.” Donna seconds that statement and shares some milestones that her grandkids have reached throughout the past three years. “Their technical skills and mental development have increased dramatically through their lessons and clinics,” she says. “Emerey

The programs offered are exceptional. The staff goes beyond expectations, and being involved here has provided us the opportunity to do something we love as a family" — Donna Stauffer

has been competing in USTA tournaments for a year; Adelyn started playing Smashers as soon as she turned seven; and Brady started playing in Junior Team Tennis while he was four years old. They want to be on the courts with their friends here every chance they get. It is great to see how all the kids in the program lift each other’s games by playing hard and having a great time.” The family attributes the kids’ success to the talented and capable instructors. “In addition to the tennis staff’s qualifications and certifications, they also have a tremendous passion for the game,” Donna says. “Especially at the junior level, they focus on developing the whole player. They teach fundamentals using drills that relate directly to match play. They also focus on helping the

players develop the mental toughness they need to compete and make sure they are getting the physical conditioning they need to make them stronger and prevent physical injuries. Most of all, they make tennis fun, and it is obvious that they are genuinely invested in every player participating in their programs.” The Stauffer/Gross family will always love tennis. They are forever grateful to the MAC for creating a safe, educational and fun environment to play, and they encourage other members to participate. Donna sums it all up very nicely. “The programs offered are exceptional. The staff goes beyond expectations, and being involved here has provided us the opportunity to do something we love as a family.”

TENNISTIDBITS THE DYNAMIC DUO: MARGARET JUNKER AND MAX SHAPIRO Two of the MAC’s tennis pros, Margaret Junker and Max Shapiro, have made quite a ruckus competing as a team in various events. They won two tournaments in summer 2016 (Bud Simpson Open and Dwight Davis Championships). They also finished as runner-up in the Alton Open last year and finished the 2016 season as the #1 ranked doubles team in St. Louis. Although they didn’t compete in any tournaments this past summer due to injuries and time constraints, they both look forward to playing more in 2018. MAC STAFF RECOGNIZED BY USTA The MAC announced that three of its tennis pros were recognized by the USTA St. Louis District as 2017 Outstanding Contributors to Youth High Performance Tennis. This honor is usually awarded to only one individual, but the USTA deemed that Max Shapiro, Trey Owens and Scott Stutz were all deserving. The pros will be honored at the USTA St. Louis 2017 Awards Dinner on Nov. 18. OTHER AWARDS TO BE GIVEN OUT THAT NIGHT INCLUDE: Junior Team Tennis Organizer: Max Shapiro Junior Recreational Player of the Year (female): Emma Pawlitz Junior Sportsmanship Awards: G10 - Ashley Behan is currently playing green ball and has made great strides in the past year under Amanda Pratzel. G12 - Eva Kasal is a top player on the 12U circuit in St. Louis and is getting back up to speed this fall after dealing with a few injuries over the summer. Eva excels at the net and has a high ceiling as a junior tennis player. G18 - Natalie Malone is a senior at Ladue High School and plays #1 on the team.

L TO R: EMILY KANTROVITZ, AINSLEY HEIDBREDDER, ELLIE CHOATE, ABBY GAINES, BRIAN TOKARCZYK, AKASH RAJAN, RORY SUTTER, CASE FAGAN, DEV NAYAK, AND COACH MAX SHAPIRO.

JUNIOR TEAM TENNIS EXCELS AT NATIONAL COMPETITION The MAC's 14 U advanced team finished in third place at the Junior Team Tennis national competition in Orlando in September. The competition took place at the brand new USTA National Campus. Sixteen teams competed for the crown of National Champion. The MAC team of nine players, coached by Director of Junior Tennis, Max Shapiro, won their group by defeating teams from Texas, Georgia and New England, but lost in the semi-finals to the eventual champions from Southern California. The MAC then rebounded for a third-place finish by beating a team from Mid-Atlantic. MAC members Emily Kantrovitz, Ellie Choate, Ainsley Heidbredder and Case Fagan played outstandingly throughout the three-day tournament and gained notoriety for displaying sportsmanship on the court. DOUBLE DOUBLE Fun I

the

World Doubles Squash Championships resulted in an unforgettable weekend

The Missouri Athletic Club co-hosted the World Doubles Squash Championships with the Racquet Club of St. Louis Sept. 21-24. The Club and the city of St. Louis were buzzing with the excitement of the tournament. The event was a huge success thanks to many. Adam Bews, the Director of Squash at the MAC couldn’t say enough about the experience and the factors that made it so memorable. “Pros from around the world as well as the amateurs from all over the country came into the Club, participated with our members, watched all the pro matches, and ate phenomenal food and beverage. Everything ran smoothly throughout the event, and it really showed off the MAC and the game of squash to everybody.” Adam received feedback from almost all the pros about how this was the best event they had ever attended. “We had almost every pro email back saying that this was the best event they have ever been to and wished we could host it every year.” Clive Leach, John Russell, Suzie Pierrepont, and Georgina Stoker gained victory in the men’s and women’s events, respectively. U.S. pair Natalie Grainger and Christopher Callis triumphed in the mixed championship. The MAC’s own amateur players further developed their skills by participating in and watching the tournament. “It was really good for them. Watching the pros, learning a lot from them, and building good relationships with them helps with their development. St. Louis is isolated from other cities so they don’t get to play against many different people. So, it was good for them to play against players they haven’t met before, haven’t been with on the court before, having to adjust how to play against different people as well as making friends with different amateurs from around the country. It was a great success, and it shows them where they stand within the country as well. A lot of our amateurs did very well.” This was Adam’s first time playing in the World Championships and his assistant, squash pro Alex Ingham, played in it as well. “To be able to play your very first one at your home club was great. And I was very proud to show off the Club, and proud to be able to organize and run the World Championships as well,” Adam says. “It was great for me personally, and I was very pleased and proud for the Club as well.”

WOMEN’S DOUBLES WINNERS GEORGINA STOKER AND SUZIE PIERREPONT FROM ENGLAND STAND WITH ADAM BEWS, MIKE PUERTAS, AND RUNNERS UP NARELLE KRIZEK AND NATARSHA MCELHINNY FROM AUSTRALIA.

I just wanted to take some time to say thank you and congratulations! You guys organized, set up and ran a phenomenal event. I appreciate the efforts you all put in and am thankful for guys like yourself committed to the sport we all love.” — Australian Matt Jenson, World #9 Adam would love to co-host this tournament again but expects more competition from other cities. “I’d like to think we will, but it may be awhile. Other clubs have seen how good an event it was and want to do it now. I think we’ll find a lot of clubs competing for it, but we did such a great job that it’d be great to host it again. I think everyone would like to come back.”

Thank you so much to you and your committee for such an amazing world championship! The players were spoiled from start to finish, and we can’t thank you enough for your hard work to make this happen! It was the best worlds I’ve been a part of and wish you could host it every year.” — Narelle Krizek, women’s finalist 18 F Cherry Diamond F NOV 2017

From MAC Youth Programs to NHL Defenseman Chris Wideman Encourages MAC Youth to Try It All

Before being drafted into the National Hockey League to play for the Ottawa Senators, 27-year-old defenseman Chris Wideman was part of the youth programs at the Missouri Athletic Club. His father, Gary Wideman became a member in 1983 and was President from 1994-1995. “My brother, Alex, and I may hold the record for the most consecutive weeks at summer sports camp,” joked Chris. They

were among the first children to enroll in the program in the 1990s after the MAC purchased the Town and Country Racquet Club in 1995, which became the MAC’s West Clubhouse. Chris fondly remembers getting a taste of many different sports throughout the summer at the MAC. “I think it’s important to give all sports a try before choosing one to focus on. The MAC allowed me to do that at a young age,” said Chris. In addition to sports camp, Chris and his brother Alex swam on the first MAC Swim Team and remain friends with several teammates today. “My brother, sister, and I hung around the pool eating chicken fingers with our friends all time,” he remembers. “The Club is a special place, and we were fortunate to have it around.” Of all his memories at the Club, his fondest are simply having the opportunity to hang out with his dad. “The MAC’s dining and social activities are part of

the fiber that makes up our family,” said Past President Gary Wideman. One memory stood out. “Around the time my dad was President, the Red Wings were playing in St. Louis, and they held a practice in the MAC’s gym,” recounted Chris. “My brother and I got to play with them, and some of those guys like Paul Coffey, Sergei Fedorov, and Steve Yzerman are Hall of Famers today.” Chris also remembers meeting St. Louis Blues players such as Chris Pronger at the annual Blues breakfast event. “My kids have been attending MAC events since they were born. I want them to be part of the tradition and legacy of the Club, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they became members once they return to St. Louis,” said Gary. When he visits St. Louis, Chris still joins his father in the fitness center, by the pool or in the Jack Buck Grille before a Cardinals game. “The Missouri Athletic Club offers so many great programs. I even recognized that as a kid. I used to flip through the Cherry Diamond magazine because I thought the articles were cool, and I wanted to try all the Club had to offer. I hope another MAC kid reads this article and is inspired to try everything and chase their dreams too,” concluded Chris.

INAUGURAL TIP-OFF LUNCHEON

a Slam Dunk

The MAC is home to the best lineup of sports banquets in town. In October, the Club debuted an event that appears destined to be another great traditional event. The inaugural College Basketball Tip-Off Luncheon attracted a big gathering of basketball fans and the attention of local media who covered the event. Tom Ackerman from KMOX Radio previewed the upcoming

season with Brad Underwood (University of Illinois), Jon Harris (SIU-Edwardsville), Travis Ford (SLU) and Barry Hinson (SIUCarbondale). The event will continue to grow in the future with Missouri State and Mizzou being added to the program. This event plans to gain momentum in years to come.

>> clubs within the club 2017 CSC CHARITY HIGHLIGHT: IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY, INC. It’s Your Birthday, Inc.’s mission is to create fun and memorable experiences for children that reside in homeless and domestic violence centers. While volunteering at a homeless shelter, the founder of It’s Your Birthday, Inc., Rolanda Robinson, noticed several children running around. She asked the Executive Director how these children celebrate their birthday. He explained that because of a lack of resources and funding, nothing was done. Rolanda loves to celebrate her

personal birthday and remembers how special birthdays were when she was a child. She decided to start celebrating these children’s birthdays using her own funds. They were excited each time “The Birthday Lady” arrived to give them joy on their special day. Unfortunately, after a few months, the shelter closed. Rolanda wanted to continue to bring joy to children living in homeless shelters, and as a former victim, she included domestic violence shelters as

well. In 2014, It’s Your Birthday, Inc. was born! To support this charity, consider donating to the Charitable Society for Children, which supports three charities annually. FYC MEMBERS SAMPLE BREW AT THE PINCKNEY BEND DISTILLERY.

On the Road Again

WITH THE FOREVER YOUNG CLUB What were Forever Young Club members doing at the notoriously treacherous Pinckney Bend of the Missouri River in September? As usual, they were discovering fun in a place very few visit. This time in New Haven, west of Washington, Mo. Those who thought milk came from a carton at the grocery store got up close and personal with actual cows at the fourth generation Scheer Dairy Farm where a robotic milking system is used. The cows decide when they are ready to be milked and present themselves to the robot where they are cleaned and milked, untouched by human hands. They even receive a “cow candy” treat. After a hearty “church lady” lunch and bake sale at the 1846 Ebenezer Lutheran Church, the riverfront in old downtown New Haven called. A museum told the story of the riverboat days in the 1800’s when Pinckney Bend was a stop for cordwood to fuel steamship boilers. The group learned that John Coulter, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the discoverer of Yellowstone Park, is buried in New Haven. Modern diversions included observation of glass blowing at the Astral Art Glass foundry and sampling products at the Pinckney Bend Distillery. Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to visit the pristine art deco WALT movie theater where they snacked on popcorn and Pepsi while watching old-time cartoons. After a day of discovery, the group sampled ice cream made from Sheer Dairy Farm milk at the New Haven Ice Cream Shoppe before their trek back to the West Clubhouse.

Stay Within the Lines with St. Louis Adult Coloring Book Producer Adult coloring books have become very trendy. At this month's Forever Young Club meeting, attendees will have an opportunity to take crayon in hand and see if they can still stay within the lines. The instructor will be artist Jo Ann Kargus who produced the coloring books: St. Louis Splendor, Route 66 Splendor and Cardinals Splendor. Each book holds 50 pen and ink drawings of familiar landmarks and events. Join the group on Friday, Nov. 17 at 11:30 a.m. Register online.

SALON AND SPA ONLINE RESERVATIONS

SEARCH MEMBER DIRECTORY BY COMPANY

Starting Nov. 1, members can make their Downtown Clubhouse Barbershop and West Clubhouse Salon appointments through the MAC’s website. Each clubhouse offers a variety of services to ensure members look and feel their best, including haircuts and styles, shampoo, color and highlights, manicures, pedicures, shaving and beard trims, facial and scalp massage, and aqua detox. Also, book your child or grandchild’s first haircut at the MAC, and capture a photo for the Cherry Diamond! The salon reservation system works in conjunction with the massage reservation system so the steps to make a reservation are very similar. To make an online reservation: 1. Login to the MAC website (mac-stl.org). 2. Hover over Wellness in the navigation header. 3. Select “Salon & Spa” from the drop-down menu. 4. Scroll down to the appointment box and adjust the date, time range, location, professional and treatment to your preference, and hit search. 5. The reservation system will show you all the available appointments that match your criteria. 6. Select your preferred appointment and book! 7. You will receive an email confirmation of the appointment once the reservation has been made. If you would like to book two services back-to-back or simultaneously, please call the Barbershop or Salon to coordinate those appointments.

Members like to do business with other members, and now members can easily search the online Member Directory by member company. Members interested in knowing if another member works for a particular company can simply: 1. Login to the MAC website (mac-stl.org). 2. Hover over My MAC in the navigation header. 3. Select “Member Directory” from the drop-down menu or from the Quick Links box on the member homepage. 4. Select the black Search tab at the top of the directory. 5. Search for members by any of the fields, including Business Company/Title. 6. A list of members who match the search criteria will populate with name, email address, and phone number, if the member has chosen to share their contact information. 7. You can also click on the member’s name to see their profile information. For suggestions on how to use this functionality to do more business networking at the MAC, read Najah Fennoy’s column on page 7.

STATE OF THE CLUB ADDRESS ABOVE LEFT: THE GROUP OF PRESENTERS: AMY FREEMAN, ASHLEY HANCOCK, JEFF TUHRO, CHRIS MAURER, RICK SCHNEIDER, WALLY SMITH AND PAM ROTH. NOT PICTURED: COURTNEY HUTT & PAUL HELFRICH.

To improve communication between management and staff and to increase communication between departments, four all-staff State of the Club meetings were held on Oct. 4 and 5. Presenters reported on the membership survey results, current and future Club projects, the record-breaking fiscal year and financial plan for the future. From the membership survey, Content Marketing Manager Amy Freeman reported that two of the primary reasons members join and retain their membership are fitness and dining. As a takeaway from the survey,

Athletic Director Jeff Tuhro and members of his staff spoke about the current and future renovation projects and upgrades happening in athletics and fitness at the Downtown Clubhouse. He also mentioned that the Planning Committee and its West Clubhouse Task Force are working with an architect to determine the best ways to repurpose space and expand the fitness center. “Engaged members stay members,” quoted Jeff. “Improving our fitness and athletic offerings is one step in ensuring that.” Jeff was also happy to share that participation levels for many youth programs have risen to all-time highs. Jeff added that the recent World Doubles Squash Championships was an enormous success. “Squash is growing in the Midwest and at the MAC, and our squash program is competing and surpassing other predominant cities when it comes to squash events.” For example, a squash club on the coast where the sport is more popular may have 30-50 entries in its club championship tournament. This year, the MAC had 260 entries in its tournament.

Director of Accounting Pam Roth spoke on the excellent fiscal year as well as the increases in membership (up from 2,276 to 2,366 in the past five years), departmental revenue (increased $3.4 million since 2012) and net income (increased from break-even in 2016 to $800,000 in 2017), making for a profitable past few years for the Club. General Manager Wally Smith closed with an overview of the 10-year financial plan, and answered staff questions.

THINKING BIG

AT PL AN NING COMMIT TEE B R AINS TOR M SE SSION

The MAC’s Planning Committee invited members to attend a brainstorming session on Saturday, Oct. 14 to creatively explore new ideas that would address feedback from the member survey. The Planning Committee has been using the results of the member survey to plan future initiatives. In the survey, members reported that two of the primary reasons they joined the MAC and retain their membership are because of the Club’s dining and fitness offerings. As a result, the session concentrated on these areas. The committee and its guests broke into three groups focused on membership, athletics and fitness, and food and beverage. Brandon Dempsey moderated the session.

He started with a comedic, but insightful YouTube video called First Follower: Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy, which illustrated how to create a movement. Then, he charged each group with dreaming up big changes that would keep the MAC’s positive momentum rolling. Each group was tasked with brainstorming ideas and using the survey results to make a case for their idea. After the brainstorming session, each group presented their thought-provoking big ideas, which stimulated a lot of good discussion and feedback. The Planning Committee will revisit these ideas during their monthly meeting and assign task groups to further explore new opportunities. Cherry Diamond F NOV 2017 F 29

EIGHT YE AR S AGO Page 20 of this issue highlights Chris Wideman’s travel to success, beginning with his childhood at the MAC. Eight years ago, this article appeared in the March 2009 Cherry Diamond and shared how the then-19-year-old Miami University freshman was a defenseman for one of the top ranked Division 1 hockey teams in the nation. Fast-forward eight years, he now plays for the NHL’s Ottawa Senators at the age of 27. Chris credited a lot of his current successes to his involvement in athletics at a young age. He participated in the Saturday morning youth programs, Master Shin’s martial arts classes, and summer sports camps, before dedicating his athletic talents to hockey. Mark your calendars for the upcoming MAC Happy “I think participating in the sports programs at the Hours.
