PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
»
With the calendar turning to October, obviously the Cardinals are pushing toward another division title and hopefully a deep playoff run. There is nothing quite like playoff baseball and the MAC is a great spot to grab a bite to eat and cocktail before and after the game. While October promises to be a fun month, we saw some great events at the MAC over the past month or so. First off, the Foundation golf tournament was one for the record books, netting more than $90,000. I want to extend a big thank you for the generosity of our sponsors and participants in making this a success. This year’s proceeds will be divvied among three of the Club’s foundations: the Preservation Foundation (80%), the Sports Foundation (10%) and the Foundation for the Arts (10%). Congrats to the Bob O’Loughlin team on their victory at the tournament and thanks to Past President Scott Engelbrecht on an awesome event. In late September, the MAC hosted a special event to benefit the Club’s fourth foundation – the Charitable Society for Children. Thanks to our MAC Tennis Pros for putting on a great show, and my fellow governors for putting up a good fight in the badminton challenge. Most importantly, thank you to all our members who came out to support the 2014 charities. Don’t forget, if you have a cause you’d like to see supported in 2015, be sure to submit your nomination by Oct. 25. See page 30 for more details. Moving on to upcoming events, the Associates have been hard at work planning a brand-new event designed to benefit the Charitable Society. Book your package now for this Prohibition-style Casino Night at the Downtown Clubhouse. With childcare and discounted rooms available, this will make for a great date night or evening out with friends. See page 29 for details. Don’t miss out on the upcoming TrunkR-Treat event on Oct. 26, a great family 4 F Cherry Diamond F OCTOBER 2014
event for the kids. While Halloween is next up on the calendar, the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays will be here in a blink of an eye. Now is the time to book your holiday parties at the Club, as dates are filling up fast. If you’ve never hosted an event at the MAC, I think you’ll be impressed with our professional event staff, the quality of the food and the superior service your guests will receive. Not to mention, hosting at the Club means you can actually relax and enjoy your own party. On the sporting events front, as a SLU grad I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Billikens luncheon with Coach Jim Crews on Oct. 29. The Rams have home games on Oct. 13 and 19, so hit the Club before and after the games. Finally, the MAC shuttle will again be providing transportation to and from Billikens and Blues games so this is a great way to avoid the parking headaches. Please be sure to see page 7, as Finance Chair John Salter provides a full recap of the 2013-2014 fiscal year. I just want to take a moment to touch on membership. Over the past year, we’ve sung the praises of our membership committee, sponsors and staff in growing our roster. But I’d also like to commend them for thinking beyond new member growth and really drilling down into the factors that drive membership retention. In recent months, the Club has introduced a more vibrant onboarding program for new members, including monthly orientation sessions. Some of these programs are just getting rolling, but I believe they will be integral to ensuring that members are engaged and connected from day one. Membership recruitment and retention is the lifeblood of any club, but it isn’t just a job for the committee or staff. I encourage all members to attend the Club’s frequent happy hours or take a moment to reach out to newly joined members. If you’ve sponsored a new member, be sure to check in with them to make sure they’re getting settled in at the MAC. Our members are what make this a special place and I thank you all for being great patrons of the Club. It is an honor to serve you and I look forward to seeing you soon.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN
As you can see from Gov. Salter’s financial report, it was another good year at the Club as we continue to make positive gains across most areas. I won’t repeat the numbers, but I do want to look at some of the factors, decisions and people driving this growth – the “why” behind the numbers. At a strategic level, the MAC leadership and staff have focused on growing and filling the “Three Buckets” – Membership, Rooms and Catering, and these efforts are paying off. The MAC’s Rooms business is an example of a great success story. Why? At the core, it comes down to hiring and placing the right people in charge of this area of the business and giving them the right tools and systems to support their efforts. We’re in the process of transitioning to a new online reservations system to improve efficiency even further, and over the next year, will be bringing additional rooms back online, increasing potential profits. The success in this area can also be attributed to investing in our product, through ongoing maintenance and renovations, to keep our overnight guest rooms up to competitive standards in the marketplace. We’re seeing continual growth in our Catering business (hint: if you haven’t booked your holiday party yet, you better hurry as dates are filling up). Why? While we’ve always had great staff in these areas, our team has been focusing on setting higher service and quality standards and improving training so that we can deliver a more consistent 6 F Cherry Diamond F OCTOBER 2014
»
and outstanding experience to all guests. Our Club members have also been great about booking their events at the MAC and spreading the word about this valuable benefit. If you are a member of a professional association, investment club or any type of group that meets monthly, we would like you to consider hosting your events at the MAC. Call Najah at 314-539-4448 and she will get you set up. We achieved a second straight year of positive membership growth. Why? It starts with an engaged and active Membership Committee, one that looks beyond just adding new members and recognizes the importance of retention in achieving our ambitious goals. To this end, we’ve developed a new onboarding program, starting with monthly orientation sessions, designed to get new members engaged from day one. Our strong and active Clubs Within the Club also remain an important retention tool, as members are able to get involved and find their place among others who share their passions and interests. In the coming year, we’ll apply this same focus and energy to our Fourth Bucket – the MAC Foundations. The good news is that we already have a great starting point for this work. For example, just consider the growth of the MAC Golf Classic and the funds it has raised for the Preservation Foundation,
thanks to the foresight and hard work of Past Presidents Kim Tucci, Gerald Ortbals and Don Gunn. Also, I can’t forget to thank Past President Scott Engelbrecht for serving as chair for this year’s record-breaking Golf Classic. All four of these gentlemen have given tirelessly to the MAC and their contributions are so appreciated. Gentlemen, thank you all so very much! The Preservation Foundation moves forward in the very capable hands of Steve Krause; likewise, the Sports Foundation under Greg Beekman and the Foundation for the Arts under Paul Weil. Now that we’ve gained some traction, I’m excited to see the next steps for these individuals and their committees in growing these foundations for the future success and sustainability of the MAC. We’ve already begun planning for a gala in early 2015 that is designed to become the signature event for the MAC and our foundations. Much like the Valentine’s Day 250th Celebration was the party of the year for 2014 (thanks to the work of the MAC PAC), the gala is sure to fill this role for 2015. Stay tuned for more information, and see you at the Club!

FINANCE COMMITTEE UPDATE
Last year, I reported on positive results after three years of belt tightening. Despite certain unexpected expenses this year, Club management did an excellent job in FY 2014 keeping the Club moving in the right direction and positioning us for even better results in the future. While bottom-line performance for the year was not as robust as FY 2013, there were numerous highlights: F Total club revenues (dues, capital fees, initiation fees and departmental revenue) climbed to $18.2 million, an increase of 5.9% over last year. F Over $970,000 of positive cash flow was generated during the year. F Our member headcount grew by 44, compared to growth of 17 last year, to 2,337 dues-paying members in August 2014. Our Platinum. Partner headcount now stands at 851, an increase of 265 this year F Initiation fees topped $100,000 for the second year in a row. F Rooms revenue exceeded $1 million for the first time ever – coming in at $1.15 million. Profit of $362,000
»
was generated, a 31% increase over the prior year. Occupancy exceeded 44%, compared to 39% last year. F Both F&B locations generated significant increases in revenues, which were up $618,000, or 11.3%. In addition, both F&B locations were quite profitable, with profit of $194,000 Downtown and $79,000 at West. The combined total was almost three times higher than the prior year. F Total departmental revenues exceeded $10 million. The total was more than $980,000 greater than last year, an increase of almost 11%. F Our long-term bank debt was paid down to $7.16 million, a reduction of $742,250 during the year. F The balance on our line of credit at year end remained low at $46,000, which reflects effective cash management. In August, your Finance Committee and the Board approved the FY 2015 operating budget. General Manager Smith and the management team spent hundreds of hours on the budget process. We feel confident that the budget document reflects our collective goals and is an accurate roadmap to guide us through the coming year. Management and your Board have committed themselves to continuing to focus efforts on enhancing the member experience. The Club will spend, with the Preservation Foundation’s help, close to $900,000 in the coming year, a major part of which will be used to fund the continuing upgrade of the hotel. We hope to add 15 rooms to our availability, which should generate significant high-quality revenue that can be used to add athletic equip-
ment, upgrade kitchen equipment, and address other needs at both locations. While our financial condition is considerably better than just a few years ago, there is plenty of hard work ahead. Our staff, including our top flight financial team led by CFO Larry Absheer and Accounting Manager Pam Roth, are completely focused on keeping our finances moving in the right direction. Your member-led Finance Committee will do the same. Allow me to just add a word of thanks again to the members of the Committee who volunteer their time to ensure your Club is fiscally secure, while continuing to improve the member experience. The Club’s new independent accounting firm will begin its work on the year-end audit shortly, and the annual audit will be available for review by the end of the year. We’ve been fortunate to avoid dues increases in recent years. While there were many highlights in this financial year, our overall condition required us to increase dues by approximately 4%, following a small capital fee increase earlier in the year. We continue to understand that other increases may become necessary in the future, but both management and your member volunteers on the Finance Committee and Board pledge to do our best to keep increases in check. This month’s white wine selection comes to the MAC from the Dierberg Vineyard, located in the Santa Maria Valley of California. The 2011 Dierberg Chardonnay leads with vivid aromas of deep mango, rich lemon, a hint of fresh lemon peel and creamy hazelnut. On the palate the wine is lush citrus: lemon curd, lemon blossoms and lemon rind with a slight toasted sesame seed accent. For the red wine lovers, CrossBarn by Paul Hobbs Pinot Noir is produced using hand-harvested fruit from carefully selected vineyards in the Sonoma Coast appellation. Ruby-hued and scented with wild dark cherry and black tea, this is a bright, focused expression of Sonoma Coast pinot noir with great length and balanced acidity, as layers of blackberry, cherry and earth unfold over a silky palate.

Jack Buck Sports Awards Banquet The candidates for the prestigious Missouri Athletic Club Sports Personality of the Year are set. The award, which MAC member Jack Buck established in 1970, annually honors the top local sports figure. The candidates for the 2014 Sports Personality of the Year are Matt Adams, Bradley Beal, Pat Neshek, T.J. Oshie, Alex Pietrangelo and Robert Quinn. Cardinals 1st baseman Matt Adams has been the team’s most consistent hitter during his first season as an everyday player. He headed into September with a batting average over .300 and has been a pleasant surprise with the glove. Adams has been especially adept at picking balls out of the dirt and has been ranked first among National League first baseman in defensive runs saved. Chaminade graduate Bradley Beal enjoyed a breakout year in his second season in the NBA. The 6’5” guard helped the Washington Wizards beat the Bulls in the first round of the playoffs, moving the team on to the second round for the first time since 2005. The sharp-shooting Beal averaged 17 points per game and was runner-up in the Three-Point Shootout at the NBA AllStar game. One of the biggest surprises of the 2014 baseball season has been pitcher Pat Neshek. The Cardinals invited the side-arming relief pitcher to spring training, but gave him no guarantee he would make the team. Not only did he earn a job in St. Louis, Neshek was selected to his first All-Star Game at the unlikely age of 33. He overcame a career filled with adversity and injuries to become the most reliable reliever in the Cards bullpen.
Blues forward T.J. Oshie became an international sensation following his performance at the 2014 Olympics. He single-handedly outscored Russia in a shootout cashing in on four of the six attempts he took. Following his historic performance, Oshie was in high demand on talk shows and gained 130,000 new Twitter followers in 24 hours. Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo was named a second-team NHL All-Star for the second time in three seasons. The 24-yearold scored eight goals and 43 assists while finishing with a plus-20 rating. Pietrangelo helped Canada capture the gold medal at the 2014 Olympics. In January, Rams defensive end Robert Quinn was named the Defensive Player of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America. He collected a team-record 19 sacks and led the Rams with 18 tackles for loss. Quinn also forced seven fumbles, one of which he returned for a touchdown. The 2014 Sports Personality of the Year will be selected by MAC members. Be on the lookout for the ballot with the statements in early October. Over the years, the award has honored some of the biggest names in sports history: Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Brett Hull, Albert Pujols, Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk are a few of the legendary past winners. Make plans to attend the premier sports banquet in St. Louis at the 45th Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet, presented by Maryville University. Sponsorship opportunities are available by contacting Jim Wilson at 314-539-4488.
The event always sells out, so make reservations early. Reservations will be accepted beginning Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m.

When planning for retirement, most people focus singularly on the financial aspects of this transition. And while having a solid financial plan is key to a secure and comfortable retirement, it’s not the only piece of the puzzle. Often, the emotional, psychological and social aspects of retirement get overlooked until the last moment, but they can be just as important to fulfillment and satisfaction with this stage of life. Where will you spend your retirement? For some, retirement is the perfect opportunity to downsize or pack up and move to a new location. long-term disability, long-term care, and life insurance. Not having sufficient or appropriate coverage in place can easily destroy all your hard work in saving for retirement. What does retirement mean to you? Many people look forward to retirement as the end to a daily grind but give little thought to how their time
will actually be spent, beyond wrapping up their to-do lists or spending more time on the golf course. For someone whose career has provided them with a sense of identity and pride, this transition can be even more difficult. Many people benefit from setting goals for their retirement, or at the least, a plan for how their time will be spent.
Delmar Gardens Approaching our 50th year, the St. Louis based, family owned and operated company, the Delmar Gardens family, has maintained a philosophy of love, care and understanding in providing high quality healthcare for the Senior population. A Surprise Find
From time to time, the MAC receives pieces of Club history from members. Other times, these artifacts end up in some unusual places. Recently, while preparing some antiques to sell, Sharon Jarvis Trump of Warrenton, Mo., came across a program from the Club’s 1934 election festivities. The piece was found inside a steamer trunk emblazoned with the words “Jenkins Sisters,” alongside sheet music and a dress. As it turns out, the Jenkins Sisters were among the featured performers for the Club’s election night entertainment. Do you have an item for the archives? To preserve the history of the Club, the MAC maintains an archive at the Downtown Clubhouse, which includes past issues of the Cherry Diamond, special anniversary editions, photos and more. If you have a piece of Club history in your possession that you would like to share, please contact Jim Wilson at 314-539-4488 or jwilson@ mac-stl.org.
Emeritus Life Membership As a reminder, Emeritus Life Membership is available to any Resident and/or Clergy member who has been an MAC member for at least 10 years and who has attained the age of 65 of years, such that the total of the member’s age and length of membership is at least 90. Application is required for Emeritus Life Membership; please contact the Membership Development Department at 314-539-4438 for more information. 26 F Cherry Diamond F OCTOBER 2014
