PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

Hello all, and welcome to another Red October. The “right of passage” I referenced in last month’s column has come again as the Cardinals spoil us with another postseason berth. With home field advantage expected for what we hope is another run to the World Series, the Downtown Clubhouse’s lobby and Jack Buck Grille will be a vibrant place this month. I cannot think of a better place to bring your family, friends or a client before or after the game. As always, there is plenty happening around both clubhouses to appeal to all. In late August, more than 100 members and guests descended upon Glen Echo Country Club for the MAC’s annual Foundations Golf Tournament. This type of participation and support from our members and sponsors has been pivotal to the growth of our three foundations: the Preservation Foundation, the Sports Foundation and the Foundation for the Arts. About $90,000 was raised for these foundations at this event. To further emphasize their importance, our commitment to these foundations has been enhanced with the hiring of Cynthia Goudy in the new role of Director of Foundations. See page 29 for more information about Cynthia, and expect to hear and see more about her role and engagement opportunities for our membership. To learn more about the foundations, login to the newly released website and visit the Foundations page. September marked the beginning of the new fiscal year for the MAC. While further details will be released in a more specific format, I am pleased to share that the Club’s financial position continues to improve year after year, and 2015 has been yet another success. The groundbreaking and scheduled construction of the 1903 bar at the West

Clubhouse is set to begin any day and represents a “game changing” initiative and investment for our Club. I look forward to sharing the details and progress updates throughout this project. I also wanted to remind everyone, if you’re not already aware, that we’ve provided an attractive incentive to waive your investment in the 1903 bar by introducing a new member to the Club. It’s probably the simplest and most effective manner to leverage this member benefit as a “coming attraction” that friends and prospective members can rally around. While doing so take advantage of the many benefits associated with Platinum Partnership. A few of our members share their experience with Platinum Partnership on page 10. It’s a win-win for all involved! As usual, last year, the holiday season at the Club was a bustling one. For those considering utilizing the Club’s facilities for holiday parties and gatherings, I encourage you to lock in the dates with the catering department sooner rather than later to better guarantee access to the room(s) and space that you need and prefer. We anticipate a similar bustling pace this season, and it will be here sooner than you think. Heading into October, I want to highlight a few upcoming events. The West Clubhouse will host the ever-popular Trunk-R-Treat on October 25, which always brings a great atmosphere of family fellowship. Also, Coach Jim Crews will address the upcoming Saint Louis University Billiken basketball season at the annual Billiken luncheon on October 16. In closing, I’d like to reiterate that the Missouri Athletic Club is comprised of some of the finest people that you will ever meet. I encourage you all to get better acquainted and get to know another member or family when the opportunity presents. I promise you will engage with some of the most interesting and fascinating people you’ve ever met, and your lives will be forever enriched. I hope I have the opportunity to see all of you at Club this month and talk further about the exciting times at the MAC.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

not only “get it” but also care! My sincere thanks goes out to our entire team. I have included below some highlights from last year that our CFO, Larry Absheer, prepared for our Finance Committee as a quick review. Fiscal Year Highlights 1. Just over $1.5 million of cash flow was generated during FY 2015, which is $178,162, or 13.4%, greater than plan and $548,923, or 57.5%, ahead of last year. Dear Members: As of August 31, 2015, our fiscal year came to a close, and I would like to congratulate both our members and staff for a tremendous year. We emerged from past challenges stronger and healthier, which allows us to make improvements and catch up on much needed and deferred maintenance and club improvements. We have also been able to improve programs, which translates into happier more engaged members. Some of our programs such as tennis are running at record levels and producing winners and talented youth playing at very high levels! This is really fun, rewarding stuff, and we appreciate the engagement. Overall, our member support this past year was incredible. Our membership, catering and rooms buckets were replenished, which made all the difference this year. There is strength in numbers, and as I noted several months ago, just imagine if each one of our members had lunch just one more time each month at the club with one guest. This simple action would generate an additional $82,000 in revenue per month or $982,000 per year. Not surprisingly, our focus on a daily basis is to give you reasons to use your club. If there are ever programs or services that can be tweaked or improved, please share feedback. Our employees, as always, played a huge roll this year as well. From coaching to building to cleaning to cooking our folks are the best! We are fortunate to have a team of people who 6 F Cherry Diamond F OCTOBER 2015

2. Our member headcount grew during the year by 15. This compares to growth of 44 last year. We had 2,352 dues-paying members in August. 3. Our Platinum Partner headcount now stands at 1,008. We increased the total by 157, or 18.4%, during FY 2015. 4. Initiation fees topped $100,000 for the third year in a row, coming in at $102,200. 5. Total membership revenue (including initiation fees) climbed slightly above $7.5 million, which represented an increase of $294,000, or 4.1 %, over last year. 6. Rooms’ revenue reached a new high, coming in at $1,222,671, which compares to $1,155,200 last year. 7. Rooms occupancy came in at 47.8%, compared to 44.2% last year; ADR was $96.74, up from $90 last year; and RevPar came in greater than $46, compared to just under $40 last year. 8. Both food and beverage locations generated significant increases in revenue; revenues at both locations exceeded budget and last year. On a combined basis, revenues were up $315,000 over the prior year, which represented a 5.2% increase. 9. Both F&B locations were profitable again this year: DT profit was $300,292 and the profit at West was $143,776. The $444,068 combined total exceeded last year’s bottom line by $171,647, or 63%.

10. Total operating revenues (all departments) exceeded $10 million for the second year in a row, coming in at $10,748,910. This performance level represented a $721,280, or 7.2%, increase over last year. 11. The club experienced a very small net loss of $3,122 during FY 2015, but this was after the $283,265 pension expense adjustment. Excluding the pension adjustment, the bottom line showed a profit of $280,143, compared to a planned profit of $102,025. The bottom line in FY 2014 showed a loss of $282,051 (before a negative pension adjustment of $327,510). 12. Our long-term bank debt stood at $6,638,089 at the end of FY 2015, compared to $7,160,839 at the end of FY 2014. It is nice to put that one in the record books and to now move on to fiscal 2016. We have great challenges coupled with great opportunities ahead. The 1903 new bar project is moving along as expected. It is on time and budget to date, and the Trane Project at the Downtown Clubhouse is in the same condition. Both projects are game changers, and fortunately the majority of the work and effort is in front of us. Rest assured; we have really smart, engaged Governors totally in the mix and bringing various levels of expertise as they volunteer their time and energy for this awesome Club. Please tip your hat and give a thumbs up to our Governors when you see them. Hours of time and energy are expended on their parts, and the results from last year and our plans going forward are a result of all that work. Cheers! As always, thank you all for this incredible opportunity and for allowing me to be a part of this great place.

See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

» Nick Bauer The Cherry Diamond sat down with Nick Bauer from Empire Comfort Systems and learned interesting facts about this young MAC member and his use of the Club.

CD: How long have you been a member of the MAC? MB: I joined right out of college and when I moved to downtown, so around seven years. CD: Have you held any events at the Club? If so, why did you choose the MAC? MB: We use the MAC a lot for our business, Empire Comfort Systems. We host plant tours for customers and have them stay at the MAC. It is a perfect location to access our plant over in Belleville and take them to a Cardinals game that night. We also host our annual sales meeting every year where we have 50 sales reps, engineers and employees on the third floor for about four days. It is a great tool to have everything you need under one roof. CD: How have you utilized the Club since joining? MB: I use the Club for many different reasons, everything from basketball before and after work to business functions and breakfast meetings to attending many outside-the-club events that the MAC basketball team has throughout the year. CD: Have you joined any Clubs Within the Club? If so, which ones? If not, do you plan on joining any? MB: I joined the basketball team and continue to play in every league. I also joined Toastmasters for a while and really enjoyed it. Since leaving, I have found my public speaking skills have suffered a bit!

P latinum Partnership THE POWER OF

Platinum Partnership made its debut at the Missouri Athletic Club three years ago. Since then, it has been a great benefit to members and the Club. Read further for a wonderful Q&A with two Platinum Partners who have set a prime example.

Platinum Partnership is powerful. Michael Lofton and Luke Pope think so. This two-man team is an excellent example of what camaraderie and friendship look like at the MAC. The Club needs more of these teams. As Michael Lofton said, “What’s better than sharing the wonderful experience you’ve had at the Club with another person?”

CD: Michael and Luke, how long have you both been members? LP: I have been a member for three years, and I grew up in Mascoutah, Ill. ML: My parents joined the Club in 2001 so I was involved at a young age. After I finished grad school, I joined eight years later in 2009. CD: How did you both meet? LP: Six years ago, I met Michael and began to regularly play basketball as a guest with him and the guys. Then I started realizing the benefits of the Club, the camaraderie shared, and the close proximity to where I worked and lived, and I decided to become a member. I connected with Michael and Patti in membership to get things going, and I was playing basketball as a member a week and a half later. CD: What made you both decide to become Platinum Partners?

10 F Cherry Diamond F OCTOBER 2015

ML: When Luke joined, it was around the time that Platinum Partnership debuted. We were already great friends enjoying the Club so why not become Platinum Partners and enjoy money-saving benefits as well? We were both under 30 at the time, and it was an economic advantage to both of us. We were going to remain friends whether or not we were Platinum Partners so it just made sense. It’s a winwin all around. LP: If you find a person that you already enjoy being around and with whom you share similar interests, then why not invite them to become a member? CD: What would you say to other members about this opportunity? ML: It just makes sense. Plus, it benefits the Club. I’m not sure I’d still be living in St. Louis if it wasn’t for the MAC and what a huge role it’s played in my life.

THE POWER OF A

Governor Beau Reinberg, a long-time member of the Club and COO at The Atlas Companies, recently brought in a new member, Rick Isaak, CFO and part owner at Merric Millwork and Seating. The Cherry Diamond sat down with both gentlemen and got the inside scoop on their thoughts about the MAC and why proposing new members is such a big deal. CD: Beau, how long have you been a member at the MAC? BR: I have been coming to the Club since I was five years old, having participated in the Saturday morning Downtown Clubhouse boys program. My father, Gregg Reinberg, is an emeritus life member and was pivotal in getting our family involved from the very beginning. CD: What persuaded you both to join the Club? What were the benefits? BR: The Club was a natural fit for me, given my family’s membership and my desire to get my kids involved in activities at the Club at a very young age. Also, as a downtown resident and employee, I saw and still see the Club as an epicenter for professional activity and relationships. RI: I was looking for a club that not only offered a variety of recreational activities and dining but also had exciting events and people with whom to

have fun and share memories. I also wanted to be part of a club that had a rich tradition in St. Louis both in the city and county. By visiting Beau Reinberg at the MAC for various meetings, I saw that the MAC offered all of these amenities. CD: Beau, you are a Platinum Partner. Would you say that becoming one was a good decision? If so, why? BR: It was a great decision, since it got my younger brother, Cody, an attorney at Thompson Coburn, in the Club and involved. He is now seen daily at the Downtown Clubhouse. CD: If you had 30 seconds to explain the main benefits of becoming a Platinum Partner, what would they be? BR: Friendship with a side of value! How can you pass up the opportunity to get one of your friends or associates involved in a great club, for a discounted rate? It just makes sense.

RI: If you like to have fun and enjoy life, take a tour of the MAC! You will be convinced after you have seen all of the amenities. CD: Although you and Rick Isaak are not Platinum Partners, bringing him onboard since the 1903 investment began resulted in having your monthly investment waived. If you both had 30 seconds to tell other members about the benefits of this opportunity, what would you say? BR: This investment is an opportunity for our Club to forever change the landscape of our West Clubhouse and really take it to the next level from a social and dining standpoint. It will become the epicenter of the west social and business scene over the next decade, and all of us can be a part of this great opportunity. RI: Attracting more members will allow the MAC to continue to grow while continuing to offer the best to its membership all the while keeping its premier status!

You Can Have Your 1903 Investment Waived Too! Here’s How: Just like Governor Beau Reinberg, simply bring a new member into the Club to have your 1903 investment waived! It’s that easy! This great opportunity allows for the MAC to increase its membership while fortifying and assuring its future success and longevity. To propose a new member, contact Michael Gray (Downtown) at 314-539-4471 or mgray@mac-stl.org, or Julie Kueper (West) at 314-539-4408 or jkueper@mac-stl.org. Cherry Diamond F OCTOBER 2015 F 11

Jack Buck Sports Awards Banquet

The candidates for the prestigious Missouri Athletic Club Sports Personality of the Year are set. The award, which MAC member Jack Buck established in 1970, annually honors the top local sports figure. The candidates for the 2015 Sports Personality of the Year are Mike Matheny, Robert Quinn, Trevor Rosenthal, Becky Sauerbrunn, Vladimir Tarasenko and Michael Wacha. Since taking over for Tony LaRussa before the start of the 2012 season, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has led all Major League managers in wins. In 2015, he guided the Cardinals to a fourth straight postseason appearance under his direction. His book, “The Matheny Manifesto,” was published in 2015 and attracted national acclaim for its insights into youth sports. Rams defensive end Robert Quinn leads a line considered among the elite in the NFL. The 2013 Defensive Player of the Year got the 2015 season off to a strong start with two sacks in the Rams opening day victory over Seattle.

Cardinals pitcher Trevor Rosenthal established himself as one of the premier closers in baseball. He was named to his first All-Star game in 2015. Rosenthal began September on pace to set the team’s single-season record for saves. Becky Sauerbrunn was the defensive cornerstone for the U.S. Women’s National Team that captured the 2015 World Cup. The graduate of Ladue High School has won back-toback National Women’s Soccer League “Defender of the Year” honors. Blues winger Vladimir Tarasenko was as one of the most dangerous goal scorers in the NHL in 2014-15. His 37 goals ranked 5th in the league and earned him a trip to the All-Star Game. In Game 2 against the Wild, he became the first Blues player in more than a decade to net a hat-trick in the playoffs. Cardinals starter Michael Wacha bounced back from an injury-plagued 2014 to become an ace pitcher this season. He earned his first career trip to the All-Star game. Wacha led the Cards in wins and ranked among the

. Louis Blues

league-leaders in earned run average. The 2015 Sports Personality of the Year will be selected by MAC members. Be on the lookout for the ballot with the statements in early October. Over the years, the award has honored some of the biggest names in sports history: Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Brett Hull, Albert Pujols, Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk are a few of the legendary past winners. Make plans to attend the premier sports banquet in St. Louis at the 46th Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet, presented by Maryville University. Sponsorship opportunities are available by contacting Jim Wilson at 314-539-4488.

After retirement, the coming years may seem like a black hole full of unknown things and hours of time to fill. The decades spent working a career – and for some, raising a family – were all that was known for quite a long time. Now, the future is open and full of time to be spent. The big question is: how can the retirement years be utilized so that they’re fruitful, rewarding and beneficial? Read on to discover some great activities to engage in during retirement! Find a Job – Although it seems a little like an oxymoron, some retirees find jobs totally unrelated to their career and end up feeling liberated and rejuvenated as they learn new skills and talents. Travel – The kids are grown and there is no longer a 9-5 job so why not see the world? Volunteer – There’s no better way to spend free time than helping others in need! Find an organization that could use the help and spend some time each week volunteering. There is nothing more accomplishing. Get a Hobby – Ever wanted to start up a hobby as a young adult but never had the time to fit it into the schedule? Now’s the time to start! Start a Sport – Honing skills at a current sport or finding a completely new one to try is an excellent pastime. Begin a Business – Put creativity to good use and start up a business using ideas for products or services that were brainstormed during the young adult years. Now there is time to make them a reality. Make a New Friend – Invest time in someone who is a different age. Starting new friendships, especially ones with younger individuals, can be really rewarding and may offer new insights into life. Take a Year Off – Young adults use this technique to explore options before entering college. Why not do the same? Take a year off after retirement, do a little research while setting sights on a rewarding goal or activity. Retirement is usually seen as the end of fun and being young, but it’s not. They are the years of discovery and exploring new things. Spend retirement by helping others and discovering new things and there will never be a regret.

Harry Weber is this month’s featured artist in the Downtown Art Gallery. Following his education at Princeton University, Weber served six years in the U.S. Navy, including a year on river patrol boats in Vietnam where he compiled a compelling series of drawings chronicling his experiences. These are featured at a permanent display of Military Art on the USS Alabama. Weber is well-known for his sculptures, which are highly regarded for their sense of movement and vitality, and more than 100 have been installed across the country and abroad. His aim is to have his sculptural work show the same life and spontaneity as his sketches. His sculptures of famous sports figures are prominent features at 12 professional and amateur stadiums, including Busch Stadium, and in 2011, he was named the National Sports Artist of the Year. If you are interested in purchasing the work on display, contact Wendy Descher at 314-539-4438 or wdescher@mac-stl.org.
