PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

For Club and Country “Ask not what your country can do for you— ask what you can do for your country.” The 35th President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, delivered this famous quote at his inauguration speech on Jan. 21, 1961. In the midst of truly tumultuous times, Kennedy used this line to focus the nation on service and togetherness. Granted, this is a dramatic example, but here at the MAC, a tumultuous time is best described as the hot tub being closed for maintenance! Not exactly the Bay of Pigs invasion. But there are definitive ways we as MAC “citizens” can help our Club. Outlined below are some key fiscal year 2017 budget targets and corresponding areas where you can help: F Membership goal of +50 F Operating cash flow of $1,783,000 F $240,000 ($20,000/month) to fund our pension obligation F Principal payments on long-term debt of $738,000 F Pay down line of credit and other payables by $629,000 F $200,000 for capital expenditures MEMBERSHIP +50: Have you invited a friend, neighbor, colleague or client to an event at the Club? How about meeting in the Jack Buck Grille prior to a Cardinals game and using the shuttle? How about dinner on the patio at 1903? We need you to think NEW members—all the time. Our Club has never been better. Better food. Better service. Better employees. Bring us a prospective member and let us show them. BANQUETS: The Club can accommodate all your luncheon, business meeting, and private party needs ... and weddings, we LOVE weddings. In my humble opinion, the Missouri Room is the most beautiful banquet room in town. Contact Linda Soncasie, our Catering Director, at 314-539-4424. She loves this stuff. She will take great care of you and your event.

HOTEL ROOMS: Did you know our Downtown Clubhouse has 77 hotel rooms? Book them now for conventions, concerts, and the Cardinals World Series games—ok, getting ahead of myself a bit. The Board and Senior Management have spent considerable dollars upgrading hallways, artwork, and several rooms in recent years. Book Room 1018—it’s my favorite! Keeping the hotel full is a key factor to our financial success.

Board of Governors

FOUNDATIONS: We just concluded Foundations’ Month in August and on behalf of the Board, please allow me to say THANK YOU. We raised a combined $111,000 at the golf tournament and through one-time pledges on the green chits. Our foundations serve our Downtown Clubhouse, our art collection, and our community outreach programs. Our Director of Foundations, Cynthia Goudy, has big plans for years to come; let’s help her get there!

Before concluding, I wanted to share a few other exciting events coming soon:

Class of 2017

F The MAC is partnering with the Racquet Club to host the Squash World Championship Doubles in fall 2017. This is the biggest and most prestigious squash event in the world. Fifty of the world’s top professionals will play at the MAC. Stop and think about that, the MAC is hosting the TOP SQUASH EVENT in the World. WOW!

F Tracy Beckette F Duffy Dunn F Rebekah Bahn-Kingston F Troy Robertson F Tripp Zumwalt

F The Billikens Basketball Luncheon will be held on Oct. 26. Sign up now to hear new coach Travis Ford speak about this year’s team and his plans for the program. Being a SLU alum I’ll admit I’m extremely biased, but I think Coach Ford is a perfect fit for SLU and our community. F Our Foundations’ Gala will be held on Friday, Feb. 10, 2017. This is an early plug for the MAC party of the year. Our Gala Chairman, Governor Aaron Pawlitz, has some exciting ideas on how to take the event to the next level. Don’t miss it! Our budget is set. We will need your full participation to meet our targets. So, as MAC citizens, let’s keep our Club front of mind and serve it and each other to the fullest extent.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

Four years ago, as a newbie to the Missouri Athletic Club, I was discovering all of the nuances and uniqueness that make this place so extraordinary. I knew that in order to truly understand the culture and to get a feel for the direction, we had to hear from the majority of you on a variety of topics. We needed to ask, and we needed to listen. So, in conjunction with the Board of Governors and committees, we initiated a membership wide survey in September of 2012. The survey touched on everything MAC: dining, athletics and fitness, social events, staff, clubhouse preferences, etc. More than 500 members participated and provided excellent feedback. This information was used to plan and prioritize the future direction of the Club. As a result, fitness equipment was upgraded, the outdoor pool received a facelift, tennis and squash courts were resurfaced, hotel rooms were renovated, staff changes were made, food and beverage programs were elevated and most recently, the 1903 adults-only bar and patio was added to the West Clubhouse to name just a few of the member directed initiatives. Well, it’s time to feel that pulse again and to update plans going forward. As crazy as this sounds throughout the past four years, some 700+/- families have been added to our membership by way of your invitations to join the MAC. We have tightened up our

6 F Cherry Diamond F OCTOBER 2016

»

onboarding process as well as increased the initiation fee, which creates a more stable membership base and obviously a number of newer members who now need to be heard too. Therefore, your staff and Board are preparing to conduct another membership survey this fall of 2016. The results will be shared with all, and the top priorities taken to our big planning session in January led by Planning Committee Chairman, Governor General Beckette. Please help us focus in on your Club’s direction and priorities by taking 10 to 15 minutes to complete the survey, which we plan to get out sometime in late October or early November. Your feedback is truly valued and appreciated and will be used to shape the MAC’s initiatives for the next three or more years. The advancement of the Club and members’ usage continues to evolve, and to keep up with the changing demands on our facilities and programs, your leadership continues to evaluate and re-evaluate. President Troy Robertson is leading the efforts and has deemed this year “the year of realignment.” He and our Board are focused on the Club’s governance and our newish planning processes. For those unaware, last year, a significant bylaw change reshaped the MAC’s committee structure. There are now five primary committees: Membership, Finance, Governance, Planning, and Audit. Those committees report directly to the Board of Governors. The beauty of this streamlined system is the ability to create “task groups” for specific purposes within the committee and to select the best people for that task. It’s so powerful to gather various experts and to get the best people from within our membership assembled purely dependent on the task at hand. These task groups have clear agendas and time frames to gather specific information needed by the committee.

Once complete, the task group is done and is dissolved. The Planning Committee currently has three task groups assigned and working. One is led by Governor Shuff and is studying Downtown programs and facilities. Another is led by Governor Powers doing the same at the West campus. Governor Schoedel leads the third group. He is taking a very deep dive into our membership categories, pricing strategies and total number of members optimal per category looking three and five years out. Throughout the busy summer months, watching more than 2,300 members actively engaged within the Club has prompted the question: What is actually the right size membership for the MAC? The question of, “how do we operate with a cap of 2,500 total members?” is getting lots of conversation, study and traction. It makes great sense to me when considering facilities and activity levels. And, once that number is reached, which isn’t too far away, a waiting list would be enacted, and the initiation fee once again increased. As always, there is a lot going on with a lot of smart people all focused on what’s best for the MAC membership both short and long term. I love this stuff! Looking back, it’s rewarding to see how much has been accomplished since that last survey was administered almost four years ago. To think that so many changes started with a simple survey and evolved into amenities, programs, and a growing, thriving membership is beyond fantastic. So, please, please share your opinions on this upcoming survey, and we will keep you “in the know” as we go. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Not your typical tailgate! Seeing the stadium fill with black and gold, hearing Marching Mizzou play the fight song, smelling the smoke from the cannon that fires after a touch down — game days are an exciting time in Columbia. Adding to the excitement are University Club’s Tailgates. The tailgate-inspired buffets feature Executive Chef Daniel Pliska’s imaginative takes on game-day classics such as sliders, fried chicken, wings and pizza. Tailgates are held 2 1/2 hours prior to home games, and after the game you can swing back by to refuel with appetizers and celebratory cocktails. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

» CD: Have you joined any Clubs Within the Club? If so, which ones? If not, do you plan on joining any? MM: I have been involved with The Associates and Business Development Group. I hope to get involved with the Toastmasters as well. CD: Have you brought any new members to the Club? What advice would you give to fellow members in their recruitment efforts? MM: I have been able to be a part of the process of introducing a few new people to the Club. Inviting them to see the features of the Club in person is important, but it is almost more compelling to share some of the Club’s less tangible social and professional benefits that I’ve experienced.

Member Spotlight: Micah Mills Micah Mills, a brand new member, has already made the Club his second home and encourages others to do the same. CD: How long have you been a member of the MAC? MM: I have been a member for six months. CD: Have you held any events at the Club? If so, why did you choose the MAC? MM: The 1903 bar has become the location of choice for many of our office happy hours and casual meetings. The bar staff and amenities are second to none, and with it being in close proximity to our office, there is never a question of where to host. CD: How have you utilized the Club since joining? MM: In addition to using the workout facilities and occasionally playing squash, some of my closest friends have come through different social events at the Club. For example, I met three Associate members during the Club election. In the shortest timeline of events, we hit it off, they invited me to the Kentucky Derby, we left the next day, and we had a weekend of a lifetime. We’ve been friends ever since.

Pairing: This wine works well with all snacks, hot and cold white meat, and braised fish and cheeses.

Jack Buck Sports Awards Banquet – Dec. 5

Voting to Open Oct. 4 for Sports Personality of the Year Award The candidates for the prestigious Missouri Athletic Club Sports Personality of the Year Award are set. The award, which MAC member Jack Buck established in 1970, annually honors the top local sports figure. The candidates for the 2016 Sports Personality of the Year are Carlos Martinez, Alex Pietrangelo, Stephen Piscotty and Vladimir Tarasenko. Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez emerged as the team’s ace in 2016. The hard-throwing right-hander led the staff in wins and strikeouts. Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo became a team leader in 2016. He helped St. Louis make a playoff run to the Western Conference Finals. Prior to the start of the 2016 season, Pietrangelo was named the 21st captain in Blues franchise history. In a season where the Cardinals’ offense was ravaged by injuries and plagued with inconsistency, Stephen Piscotty was the team’s most durable

and consistent hitter. In his first full season, the 25-year-old outfielder led the team in RBIs. Blues winger Vladimir Tarasenko was as one of the most dangerous goal scorers in the NHL in 2015-16. The electrifying Russian was 4th in the NHL in goals scored (40) and led the team in points (74). He sparked the Blues to a first-round playoff victory over the Blackhawks. The 2016 Sports Personality of the Year Award will be selected by MAC members. Online voting can be done on the MAC website (www.mac-stl. org) beginning Oct. 4. Over the years, the award has honored some of the biggest names in sports history: Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Brett Hull, Albert Pujols, Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk are a few of the legendary past winners. Make plans to attend the premier sports banquet in St. Louis at the 47th Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet,

presented by Maryville University. Sponsorship opportunities are available by contacting Jim Wilson at 314-539-4488. Sponsors are invited to the VIP reception and receive prime seating at the banquet. Jack Buck Awards sponsorships benefit the MAC Sports Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Fitness Tip

Achieving a flatter stomach begins with healthy eating; spot reduction doesn’t exist. Side bends, sit ups, and planks will help tone that mid section, but attaining a leaner, flatter stomach is achieved through clean, healthy eating. Cherry Diamond F OCTOBER 2016 F 15

Cupping is Not Just for Michael Phelps By Jerrad Benton, MAC Massage Therapist While watching the summer Olympics, many inquired about the dark round markings on the backs and shoulders of the U.S. swim team, particularly swimmer Michael Phelps. The markings were caused by a massage treatment known as cupping. Traditional massage compresses soft tissue to initiate a therapeutic response. Cupping does the opposite; it utilizes “negative pressure.” Cups are applied to the body, and suction is initiated to lift and stretch the soft tissue. There are many different types of cups, and each creates a different suction. The treatment Michael Phelps received utilized glass or hard plastic cups fitted with a valve and pump to vacuum out the air inside. This suction caused a localized increase in blood circulation, stretched connective tissue called fascia, and created increased inter-cellular space to aid in the movement of lymphatic fluid. This all resulted in a softening of rigid muscle

tissue, increased recovery of damaged or fatigued tissue, and improvement in the body’s detoxification process. As a bonus, in general, cupping also improves skin tone and elasticity as well as greatly diminishes the appearance of cellulite and wrinkles. Everyone can benefit from cupping, not just Olympic athletes. This practice is beneficial to people of all lifestyles and body types, and the Missouri Athletic Club will soon offer cupping as a massage service! Myofascial Cupping utilizes medical grade silicone massage cups. Where other massage cups must remain stationary, silicone cups can be moved around, which is great for myofascial release if an individual is experiencing muscle or joint pain, stiffness, or inflammation. For questions or a free ten-minute demonstration, contact Jerrad Benton at either clubhouse or by email at jbenton@mac-stl.org. Stay tuned for more details!

Returning or Repeating Training Members who would like to schedule a session with their current trainer should: 1. Login to the MAC website (www.mac-stl.org). 2. Under the Wellness header, go to Personal Training, and then click on Book a Personal Training Session. 3. Select your preferred location and date, and review your trainer’s availability. 4. Choose an available time to make a reservation. 5. Review the gray reservation box, and make any changes, if needed. 6. Select “Make Reservation.” If you left the “Send Notifications” box checked when reviewing your reservation, you will receive a confirmation email. All personal training reservations can be reviewed on the “My Personal Training Sessions” tab. From there, you may also edit or cancel the reservation. Cancellation Policy The Missouri Athletic Club has a 24-hour cancellation policy for all personal training and massage therapy sessions.

A minimum of 24-hour advance notice is required when canceling an appointment. If you are unable to provide at least 24-hour advance notice, the Club reserves the right to charge your account the full amount of your appointment.

THE RETIREMENT YEARS: A Time for Enjoyment and Discovery Many people look forward to retirement as the end to a daily grind but give little thought to how their time will actually be spent, beyond wrapping up their to-do lists or spending more time on the golf course. For someone whose career has provided them with a sense of identity and pride, this transition can be even more difficult. A couple questions to consider before making the big decision include: 1) How can the retirement years be utilized so that they’re fruitful, rewarding and beneficial? and 2) Am I emotionally, psychologically and socially ready for retirement? Read on for some help and advice when confronted with this big decision. Many people benefit from setting goals for their retirement, or at the least, a plan for how their time will be spent. The following are strategies retirees recommend: Find a Job – Although it seems a little like an oxymoron, some retirees find jobs totally unrelated to their career and end up feeling liberated and rejuvenated as they learn new skills and talents. Travel – The kids are grown, and there is no longer a 9-5 job so why not see the world? Volunteer – Help others in need! Find an organization that could use assistance, and spend some time each week volunteering. It can be very rewarding! Get a Hobby – Ever wanted to start a hobby as a young adult but never had the time? Now’s the time! Start a Sport – Honing skills at a current sport or finding a completely new one to try is an excellent pastime. Tackle football might not be the best place to start, but many enjoy swimming, pickleball, golf and fishing! more»

SENIOR LIVING

The Retirement Years: A Time for Enjoyment and Discovery (cont.) Plan for Insurance Coverage Healthcare coverage is a critical component of retirement security, especially as expenditures continue to rise. Beyond regular health insurance, needs could include vision, dental, long-term disability, long-term care, and life insurance. Not having sufficient or appropriate coverage in place can easily destroy all the hard work put into saving for retirement. Prepare a Retirement Spending Plan Begin with a list of current income and expenses and then decide which expenses will continue and which ones will be reduced. Lastly, do some math and design a post-retirement spending plan where income is greater than or equal to expenses. Get Debt Under Control Dealing with debt is an extremely emotional and psychological issue and can quickly drain finances. Pay off debt as quickly and as soon as possible to get ahead. Make Fitness a Priority Quality of life is directly related to how a person feels. Exercise improves physical and mental health and should be done on a daily basis. Health is the foundation on which everything else is built so it needs to be as solid as possible. Saving Sense Saving during the years leading up to retirement is one of the wisest decision to make. Start small and try to increase the amount each month; make saving for retirement a priority. Design a plan, commit to it, and set goals. Remember, it’s never too early or too late to start saving. Tip: Never touch your retirement savings account. This will result in a loss of principal, interest and possibly tax benefits. Look into Social Security Benefits Social Security pays benefits that are on average equal to about 40 percent of earnings made before retirement. Estimate these benefits by using the retirement estimator on the Social Security Administration website at www.socialsecurity.gov. 24 F Cherry Diamond F OCTOBER 2016

Rebranded BDG Emphasizes “Go-Giving” By MAC member Tim Sansone

Forever Young Club Tours Ethnic St. Louis The St. Louis area has been cited in a number of recent publications as a great place to visit, often because of its many diverse neighborhoods. This month’s Forever Young Club meeting is an excellent opportunity to learn more about how those neighborhoods were created. Written by Elizabeth Terry, Patrick McCarthy and John Wright, Ethnic St. Louis illustrates with rare photographs the people and cultures that have enriched the city. The authors celebrate St. Louis from its early French traders and German settlers to today’s Vietnamese and Bosnian immigrants. Join the FYC group on Friday, Oct. 21 at 11:30 a.m. at the West Clubhouse for a virtual tour of Ethnic St. Louis.

Though I’ve had the pleasure of cochairing the Business Development Group (BDG) since 2012, I’ve had the most pleasure by far during the last few months. Together with co-chair Jim Sheets, we’ve built what was once a collection of six to eight folks sitting around a breakfast table on the fourth floor (anyone remember that?) into a gathering of dozens of like-minded business owners, sales and marketing leaders, and entrepreneurs. In recent months, we’ve averaged more than 30 attendees (one month exceeded 60) through word of mouth, good conversations, great speakers, and new connections. Speaking of great speakers, here are just a few highlights from recent months: international speaker and best-selling business author Sam Silverstein talked about the power of culture, values, and accountability

within business organizations; former helicopter pilot and owner of numerous McDonald’s franchises (and fellow MAC member) Jimmy Williams discussed how treating people right pays great dividends in the workplace and on the bottom line; and former Anheuser-Busch vice president of sales Michael Brooks (currently CEO of Ardent Tackle LLC and a partner in the William K. Busch Brewing Co.) emphasized the power of branding to stand out in the crowd. The BDG began 2016 with the goal of rebranding the group to increase attendance and make it a place where people can make meaningful connections with fellow business leaders; a place where they want to return during the year due to those valued connections and the potential to make more. Join us every third Thursday of the month at 7:15 a.m. at the Downtown Clubhouse!

Start with Employee Appreciation Appreciation is a fundamental human need, and praising employees for their good work is monumental to business success, but is sometimes THE MAC CELEBRATED EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY WITH A overlooked. BBQ AT THE CLUB FOLLOWED BY THE CARD’S GAME AT THE Employee recognition BUDWEISER BREWHOUSE. sends an extremely powerful message to the recipient and their team. Once expressed, employees feel validated and valued and respond accordingly. When employees feel valued, they’re more likely to ensure that their customers also feel valued, which can impact revenue. A conscious effort should be made to recognize and appreciate employees within an organization because it’s easy and the right thing to do. Case studies make a very persuasive point that bottom line benefits have been achieved through employee recognition programs. For example, the Walt Disney World Resort established an employee recognition program that resulted in a 15% increase in staff satisfaction with their day-to-day recognition by their immediate supervisors, which correlated to high guest-satisfaction scores. Guests indicated a strong intent to return, which directly increased profitability. Likewise, Sears, Roebuck & Co. found that for every 5% increase in employee attitude scores, customer satisfaction increased 1-3% and revenue increased 0.5%. The bottom line is simple: Employees who perform well must be recognized. If your company does not have an employee recognition program in place, consider its value and initiate one. Start by planning an employee appreciation luncheon or event at the Missouri Athletic Club. Our highly valued catering staff will make your team feel valued too. For more information, contact me at 314-539-4448 or nfennoy@mac-stl.org.

Home for the Holidays When out-of-town family and friends travel to St. Louis for the holidays, encourage them to stay at your home away from home: the Missouri Athletic Club. In addition to a boutique hotel experience, the beautiful décor at the Downtown Clubhouse will certainly put them in the holiday spirit. To make a reservation, go to the MAC website and click on the hotel header or call 314-231-7220.

More From The American Architect Magazine Below is a segment from the August 2, 1916 issue of The American Architect and follows the initial installment of this article found in the August 2016 Cherry Diamond issue. The design of an athletic club building presents to the architect a problem of unusual interest. The building must provide for the social and athletic features of the club, and in addition afford living accommodations for a considerable portion of its membership. To combine these various features into a harmonious whole, reducing the number of employees necessary to administer and supervise the affairs of the club to a minimum, insuring convenience and the proper relationship and arrangements between the various departments and at the same time secure an architectural treatment and design that is satisfying, requires on the part of an architect unusual ability in design, combined with qualities usually associated with the successful business man and executive. It is believed that the building illustrated [below] satisfies these various requirements to a marked degree.
