SURVEY SAYS … This month, the Cherry Diamond spoke with members of the conversation tables that meet regularly in the Sportsman’s Club and decided to compare how their reported experience aligns with the survey results. In the feature article, table members speak highly not only of the camaraderie amongst the table, but also the service in the Sportsman’s Club. When surveying the amenities at each clubhouse, members reported that the most important reason to join and retain membership at the MAC is its dining facilities followed closely by its fitness facilities. Other important reasons include connections to other members, culture of the Club, and sense of community. Some other notable responses support the conversation table’s ongoing positive dining experience: F 88% of members rated the MAC’s overall dining experience as good, very good, or excellent. F 72% of members who reported dining in the Sportsman’s Club rated the overall dining experience as “very good” or “excellent.” F “Overall staff service” was the highest rated quality of the Sportsman’s Club. from the president School is back in session. Football season has started. Leaves are starting to change and fall. It is a routine that we are accustomed to; like drinking a cup of coffee every morning; eating a snack at 10 a.m.; picking up the kids from school. Routines are comforting. Reliable. Just like the MAC. We hope that the MAC is part of your routine. Like enrolling in the fall basketball league. Attending the various whiskey or wine tasting events. Friday night dinners at the West Clubhouse while the kids play in the gym. Meeting a friend or customer for a drink at 1903. Dinner downtown before the symphony. Veterans Day lunch. Thanksgiving Dinner. Apollos Fall Concert. Sooner or later, the MAC becomes intertwined in your life. HOWEVER, we don’t want you to think that we are “STUCK” in a routine either. The Board of Governors, our various Committees and our talented staff are working hard to create new events, enhance existing programs, and improve our facilities. Here is a brief list of those activities: F In August, the Board approved approximately $889,000 for capital improvements in FY 2018. These funds will be used for enhancements to the MAC and to address regular maintenance projects that were delayed in prior years due to lack of funds.

F The former golf simulator room at the Downtown Clubhouse has already been remodeled into a multi-purpose fitness room. Work is ongoing to upgrade the HVAC system on the 11th floor, demo the old “Judo” room and create a new modern fitness space. These spaces will increase our capacity for new exercise classes. F An outside consultant has been hired to help us make the best use of our space at West Clubhouse so we can have proper spaces for yoga, Pilates, spinning and other fitness activities. F New ovens have been ordered for the Downtown Clubhouse to help with large events and improve efficiency in the Jack Buck Grille. F The freezer and coolers at the West Clubhouse are getting major upgrades. These will improve our ability to host larger catering events and reduce the renting of refrigerator trailers. F Various hotel rooms and bathrooms at the Downtown Clubhouse will get a much-needed facelift. F The parking lot at the West Clubhouse will be repaired and repaved in October. F The Governance Committee is working on by-law updates and seriously examining the MAC’s governance model and election activities.

F The Planning Committee and its various task forces are finalizing a strategic plan that will lead us for the next 10 years. F The Finance Committee has worked closely with the Planning Committee to address longterm debt issues and help ensure that we only spend what is fiscally prudent. F The Membership Committee continues to focus on retention and attraction, but is identifying new efforts to attract female members, young professionals, and Illinois residents. F The Board of Governors visited three city clubs in Boston to obtain new ideas and it also reaffirmed that much of what we do is on the right path of success. We will work hard to communicate these efforts along with the numerous other activities that are taking place. We have many talented members and staff that are working diligently to ENHANCE your ‘MAC Routine!’ Having FUN at the MAC,

from the general manager Since 2000, the Missouri Athletic Club has been designated a Platinum Club of America. Of the more than 5,000 private clubs across the country, only five percent are distinguished as a Platinum Club. One of the key attributes of a Platinum Club is a strong governance model, which encourages the Board of Governors to attend an annual retreat to share ideas and best practices. I am proud to report that this has been a Missouri Athletic Club Board practice longer than our leadership can remember, most likely started by my esteemed predecessor Larry Thompson. It truly demonstrates our Board’s dedication to the Club as they pay all their own expenses to attend, including travel, hotel accommodations, and all food and beverage. This year, 13 out of our 15 Board members and their spouses were able to attend our Board Retreat on September 13-16. The keys to this retreat are learning and camaraderie through shared experiences, and this retreat was an excellent experience. We visited three private clubs in Boston: the Harvard Club of Boston, the University Club of Boston, and the Union Club of Boston. In addition to these, President Schoedel and I stayed at the Algonquin Club of Boston, which is known for their food and beverage and very quiet atmosphere, while everyone else was hosted by the Harvard Club, which is an old club steeped in tradition and comprised of intellectuals recognized not only in the community but throughout the world. Like the MAC, the Harvard Club has two locations. Their clubhouse near the Back Bay has just 18 hotel rooms. Their downtown clubhouse is on the 38th floor of a skyrise building with panoramic views of the Boston Harbor, Charles River and Back Bay. We were fortunate to be able to dine at each location. We wanted to experience the differences, but

truthfully, they were very similar in every respect. Their Executive Chef had trained all the chefs at both clubhouses so their styles were very similar. Unlike the MAC, where we have Chef Bart at the Downtown Clubhouse and Chef Grant at the West Clubhouse with distinctly different backgrounds, styles, flavors and thus experiences depending on the venue. My counterpart at this club, Steve Cummings, started working there the same month that I started here at the MAC. He has experienced similar challenges with an old historic building, deferred maintenance, and declining membership. However, we are both happy to report that our clubs are on the upswing and seem to be thriving in our communities. We enjoyed touring with the leaders of that club and learning about their best practices, governance structure, strategic planning process, capital improvement projects, food and beverage offerings, and membership goals. Speaking of membership, the University Club boasted a waiting list of prospective members waiting one to two years to become members. Their facilities had been updated, and their fitness and athletic offerings were cutting-edge and the hallmark of their success. Also, the service and quality of their food and beverage offerings was outstanding. On the flip side, the Union Club is wrestling with a declining membership and an enormous very, very old building dating back more than 200 years, which also means a strong tradition and heritage, but it has forced them to literally survive off their hotel and food and beverage revenues. Fortunately, they are starting a strategic planning process with the goal of reinvigorating the club so it once again thrives. In talking to other clubs about their strategic planning process, I am incredibly thankful to Governor Beckette

for leading us down this path. He has agreed to serve a second term on the Board to see through a planning process that was started during his last term and under his leadership. This has been a great benefit to the MAC. The updated plan will be completed soon and available to read upon request. This was my fifth year on retreat. We’ve been to Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, Fort Worth, and now Boston. Each club we’ve visited has had similarities and unique differences from our own. All clubs have their challenges and opportunities, but freshness, facilities, and forward thinking clearly win the day. My biggest takeaway was a quote by President Schoedel. He said, “These retreats really show that the MAC is doing well all around and that we should be very proud of our Club.” I am very proud of the MAC. Nonetheless, we still have lots of work to do to as we continue to revitalize. The functional training room at our Downtown Clubhouse should be coming online as this magazine goes to print. Plans are firming up for our West Clubhouse athletic and fitness areas. More exciting projects will kickoff at the start of the new year. Look for more videos and other messages from President Schoedel as we move forward; we will strive to keep you in the loop and over communicate at every opportunity. These are exciting times at the MAC, and I couldn’t be prouder to play my part as we go. Thank you for the awesome opportunity. See you at the Club!

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

FAT H ER SON BA NQU ET SPOT LIGH TS BLU ES’ M I K E Y EO This year’s Father Son Banquet turned out to be one for the books as more than 100 members gathered with their sons and grandsons for popcorn, movies, entertainment, dinner and an ice cream sundae bar. CLASSIC CONVERSATIONS Throughout MAC history, many conversational “tables” and clubs were popular among members. The Cherry Diamond sat down with Bill Schawacker and Ed Sparks of the Wall Street Table and Gerry Ortbals from the Big M stock club and discussed how these groups have stood the test of time. Rousing banter, exuberant political discussions and, of course, larges doses of MAC camaraderie round out the discussion groups or “tables” that have been a staple of MAC history for decades. Tables such as the Lousy Bastards Variety Luncheon Club, known as the LB Table, was formed just after WWII; this table still exists today. Other tables were more industry-specific such as the Gas and Oil Table, Steel Table, Coal Table and Beachcomber Table. These were disbanded years ago, but the Wall Street Table, LB Table, Big M stock club and Athletes remain at the Downtown Clubhouse today. All groups boast members who enjoy each other’s company, lively conversations and plenty of MAC fun so it’s safe to say that they won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. The Cherry Diamond dug deep into the history and traditions of two of these remaining tables and want to share the secrets of their success.

The Wall Street Table

In September 1908, five years after the MAC’s inception in 1903, seven members who shared lunch together most days of the week in the Missouri Ballroom formed the Wall Street Table. Reportedly, the group’s name sprung from their conversations about the negative state of the economy and financial woes. At that time, St. Louis was the financial and banking center for the entire southwest. Floyd Norwine is credited with suggesting the name of the table and 16 F Cherry Diamond F OCT 2017

TOP PHOTO: MEMBERS OF THE WALL STREET TABLE STAND WITH BETTY AND TISHA . ABOVE FROM LEFT: JOHN KINGSTON BLOWS OUT HIS CANDLE ON HIS CELEBRATORY BIRTHDAY CAKE; BILL SCHAWACKER AND ED SPARKS, LONG-TIME MEMBERS OF THE WALL STREET TABLE.

My appreciation of the history of the MAC has increased ten-fold since joining the Wall Street Table. The stories that are told are incredible. We talk about it, but going to lunch with the other members shows you the camaraderie, exchanging of ideas, and absolute fun that the MAC provides.” — President Mike Schoedel is quoted as saying that the men and their businesses “were trying to overcome the headaches and losses resulting from the 1907 money panic. And like a boy given an awful name, it stuck.” Comprised of no particular industry or profession, members were admitted to the table based on the qualifications of congeniality, sportsmanship and good fellowship, and that remains true

today. Historically, table members are predominantly past presidents and past governors. Invitations to join originate from within the table. “Table members who know somebody who they think will work well with the group and who will provide conversation and amusement for everybody are asked to join,” says current secretary, Bill Schawacker, member since 2001. “It’s really that simple.” Ed Sparks who joined in

1974 adds that table members share names of individuals who they think will be good additions. “We invite them and then eventually we’ll go around and take a verbal vote,” he says. Today’s current table members are comprised of well-established businessmen, either active or retired and a variety of topics are discussed over lunch in the Sportsman’s Club. “We talk about politics, financial topics, pretty much anything. We like to provoke a lot of discussions, good or bad,” notes Sparks. A fun activity shared by the group is an end-of-the-year contest on who can correctly guess the Dow Jones and Major League Baseball’s National League, American League and World Series champions. They also celebrate each member’s birthday with cake and ice cream. Although the table has witnessed many decades of societal changes, the makeup of the table really hasn’t been altered since its inception. “There has been a lot of change, but it’s all good, and we live through it,” says Schawacker. Sparks adds, “We’ve had people changes [at the table], but the camaraderie, the having fun, the joking, the kidding, and getting into an occasional political debate has gone on for all those years. That’s kept us all together; we’ve always got something to argue about.” Schawacker adds that the group has a good mix of young and old members, but respect for everyone is a crucial ingredient. “We each have respect for one another, and I think that makes a good relationship amongst members.” Shared Club activities also add to the camaraderie of the table. “We’ve been involved in Club activities whether it’s on the Board, sports stuff, or Art Foundation,” says Sparks. Community activity is also something that Schawacker adds to why members are so tightly-knit. In closing, Schawacker shared what the table has meant to him. “One of the things that I like about being a member of this table is sometimes, after lunch is finished, you’ll get up and have a nice, warm feeling about you.”

THE BIG M

The Big M was founded in 1961 by 20 members, all of whom were former board members except one. They adopted bylaws and agreed to limit the table to 20 members. The main eligibility requirement for membership was having served on the Board of Governors. “The capital contribution to join was $200,” adds Past MAC President Gerry Ortbals, who joined in 2003. In 1964, the group amended the bylaws and eliminated the need to be a former Board GERRY ORTBALS SHARED INSIGHT ON member to join. “The reason they did that, as THE BIG M. best I can determine,” notes Ortbals “is that they wanted to admit a non-former Board member by the name of Edward D. Jones. I guess Edward D. Jones might have been someone they wanted to have in that group,” he laughs. The group has essentially remained the same and stable throughout the years. There are currently 22 members and eligibility, although it’s not in the bylaws, is based on a well-settled custom and practice that people who are invited to join are former Board members. “The overriding characteristic we look for when we extend invitations is collegiality,” says Ortbals. “We want people who are liked and who like us. Because we’re a voluntary association, it’s important that we all trust each other and like each other.” “My fondest memory happened a few years ago,” shares Ortbals, “when one of our most revered members, Past President Jack Murphy, took ill. Jack was one of these guys who wanted to do everything just so. So, he spontaneously resigned his membership, and then he had a nice recovery about a year later. We made a special exception in the bylaws and voted to let him back in to have 23 members. To me, that spoke to the spirit of the organization and why I belong to this group, because we do things like that.”

BELOVED BETTY HINES

40 Years of Service

Betty Hines celebrated her 40th anniversary at the Club on Aug. 17 and is a much-loved staple in the Sportsman’s Club. Beginning as a server at the Club in 1977, Betty was quickly trained by server Ann White. “She showed me the ropes of the Club, and she was instrumental in teaching me about the different tables and what their needs were and how often they met,” says Betty. “I actually started in the Eads Room with the Speers Table and then moved on to the Wall Street Table. The service back then was completely different than it is today,” she laughs. “There was so much involved in serving, and it was so hard. You hardly had time to converse with anyone.” To this day, Betty is still the “mother hen” for the Wall Street Table. “What I do today is pretty much what I did back then,” she says. “We joke around and have a good time.” Betty says that exceptional service is something that made the Club so great, and she continues to provide platinum-level service. “Service was an experience,” she states. Going above and beyond is Betty’s mantra. “You can go anywhere you want so we have to give them something special,” she says. Betty knows her members so well that often they will ask her what they should order for lunch; they trust her and know she has their best interests in mind. Just as Betty has cared for the Wall Street Table, they, in turn, care for Betty. “If I ever needed anything, I know I would be taken care of because they are just those kind of guys; they look out for their own,” she said. Betty’s close connections with the tables makes it hard for her to retire. She made plans to retire once her son was out of the Army, which was years ago, but she says her members won’t allow it. “I’ve been trying to retire for five years,” she laughs, “but that’s why I’m still here because everyone asks if I can wait until next year!” Serving her table members is like second nature to Betty. “It’s not like work; that’s the thing about it. I don’t think I’ve called off in about 20 years! I told Mr. Stewart that if I wake up and there’s ever a day where I don’t want to come to work that’s the day I’ll quit. And that hasn’t happened. I can’t wait to get here.” Cherry Diamond F OCT 2017 F 17

A HISTORY ON MAC TABLES Conversational tables have been a part of the MAC almost since its inception. Although many have disbanded, a few are still popular today. The Lousy Bastards Variety Luncheon Club, known as the LB Table, formed postWWII and grew from just a few members to a good-size group. This group still meets regularly for lunch in the Sportsman’s Club. The Wall Street Table, the longest surviving table in Club history, was founded in 1908 as a result of the 1907 money panic. Membership has remained robust throughout the decades, and the lively group continues to meet consistently for lunch. 5M Functional Training Room In August, the golf simulator was removed from 5M in the Athletic Department, and the MAC’s engineering and maintenance crew began overhauling the space and converting it into a functional training room for group exercise classes and personal training. The project is still underway, but is expected to be completed by early October.

FITNESS REFRESH

this fall

In response to the membership survey results, two renovation projects are underway at the Downtown Clubhouse to provide more fitness functional training space.

11th Floor Functional Training Room On the 11th floor is an approximately 2,200 square foot room that was previous used for Judo. Beginning once the new functional training room is open on 5M, the entire space will be gutted and transformed. New lighting, flooring, walls, ceiling, storage, equipment and HVAC system are on the docket. Once completed, this renovated space will be used to further enhance the personal training and group exercise classes offered at the Downtown Clubhouse.

WELLNESS TIP: When to Stretch

There is finally an answer to the age-old question of when to stretch! Stretching is extremely important. When it comes to stretching preceding an exercise program, foam rolling is a must (lingering on those tender spots for 20-30 seconds), followed by a dynamic warm-up. Be sure to foam roll and static stretch after a workout as well. ABOVE: PAUL HELFRICH GUIDES COURTNEY HUTT IN A FOAM ROLLING SESSION. 22 F Cherry Diamond F OCT 2017

PLANNING A

Purposeful Retirement

Retirement can be something exciting to anticipate, but it can also seem a little daunting. Many people look forward to retirement as the end to a daily grind but give little thought to how their time will actually be spent, beyond wrapping up their to-do lists or spending more time on the golf course. Transitioning from career life to days offering a lot of free time can be difficult. A couple big questions to consider before making the big decision include: 1) How can the retirement years be utilized so that they’re fruitful, rewarding and beneficial? and 2) Am I emotionally, psychologically and socially ready for retirement? Read on for some common mistakes to avoid when considering retirement as well as helpful tips to make the transition easier.

Mistakes to Avoid Poor Asset Allocation

Be smart when allocating investments. Find a balance between aggressive and cautious.

Tips for a Smooth Retirement

Spend Time with the Grandkids – Allot time

Find a Job – Although it seems a little like

an oxymoron, some retirees find jobs totally unrelated to their career and end up feeling liberated and rejuvenated as they learn new skills and talents. Travel – The kids are grown, and there is no

a hobby as a young adult but didn’t have the time? Now’s the time to start! Start a Sport – Honing skills at a current sport or finding a completely new one to try is an excellent pastime. Tackle football

Underestimating Life Expectancy

Many retirees only look ten years into the future, but with a lot of individuals living well into their 80’s and 90’s, it’s important to begin looking 25 years into the future. Underestimating the Cost of Health Care

Be prepared to cover costs even after qualifying for Medicare at age 65. Misjudging the Ability to Keep Working

Post-retirement, many people opt to continue working. At times, this decision is made due to financial reasons, but many others choose to work to remain active and make extra income. Don’t assume that you’ll remain healthy or that the job market for seniors will remain healthy; it’s safe to plan as if your working years won’t last indefinitely. Focusing Too Much on the Nest Egg

Although this may seem counterintuitive, don’t get too carried away with nest egg savings. It’s normal for fluctuations to occur month to month, and it’s also important to 24 F Cherry Diamond F OCT 2017

boredom or restlessness by designing a schedule that works for you! Stick to the schedule and each day will be structured with meaningful things to do. Optimize Your Health Care – Be mindful of

policy changes with your current health care provider and make any necessary switches. Continue Financial Education – Learn about

new financial products and refresh knowledge on annuities, investments, mortgage pros and cons, etc. Be Social – Mix and mingle with others

during retirement! Social activity is linked to better health. Keep a Budget – If budgeting has been a lifelong duty, don’t give up on it. Maintaining a budget will ensure that the nest egg you saved will last throughout the entire retirement. Think Young – The saying “age is just a number” is very true. Keep a “young” outlook and think of yourself as young.

Get Involved at the MAC

With more time to devote to recreation, spend your retirement years at the Club by utilizing all of its offering.

ATHLETICS Tennis

Tennis is said to be a lifelong sport, and the MAC offers a wide variety of tennis clinics for men and women. Get on the court and get

active with fellow members! Tennis mixers are available as well as ladies’ clinics, men’s league play, men’s 55+ and more! Pickleball

This popular sport boasts a laid-back environment for optimal fun and exercise! Open play takes place on Tuesdays from 1-3 p.m. in the West Clubhouse gym. more »

GABE AND BARBARA.

Make Five-Year Plans – Look ahead five years

and create some goals or markers that you’d like to accomplish or reach within that time. Sit down with a coffee and brainstorm your next move in life. Research Places to Retire – Just because

retirement is here doesn’t mean that you have to remain in the same house you’ve lived in for 50 years. Research popular and economical places for retirees. Downsizing frees up time and finding a new location with like-minded people can be a plus. Go Back to College – College isn’t just for youngsters. Choose classes that are of interest to you! The pressure to get classes under your belt won’t be there, and there’s nothing to lose but everything to gain! Opt for a Vacation – For some, taking an extended vacation may just be the answer. Use time between career changes or just as a long sabbatical before rejoining the workforce.

A PROUD HISTORY Founded in 1868, the New York Athletic Club is among the world's most celebrated private clubs. Its unique combination of top-class sporting and social facilities has drawn members from all over the world, who number in the region of 9,200. The NYAC's history has been interwoven with that of the Olympic Games; indeed, NYAC members have won 271 Olympic medals. Of those, 151 have been gold. Presently, the NYAC boasts top-ranked competitors in wrestling, judo, rowing, fencing, water polo and track and field, among other sports. Sixty-eight NYAC members competed for four countries at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, winning 23 medals. Two NYAC athletes competed in the Rio Paralympic Games that same year, returning home with one gold medal. It goes without saying that the NYAC boasts athletic facilities that compare with the finest imaginable, all of which are open to members and guests, be they Olympians or fitness enthusiasts. The Club's social and dining facilities are as renowned as its athletic accomplishments. In the City House, located in mid-town Manhattan, the Main Dining Room has stunning views of New York's Central Park, while the Cocktail Lounge and Tap Room have an ambiance that is uniquely welcoming. Most of the NYAC's 187 overnight guest rooms are refurbished and are comparable with the finest accommodations in New York City. The close proximity of the City House to New York's Theatre District, 5th Avenue, Times Square, Central Park and many other must-see

An expansive, brand new Fitness Center is alive with activity every day of the year. The Club House at Travers Island also offers dining facilities ranging from the elegantly casual to the truly opulent. In 2018, the NYAC will celebrate its 150th anniversary with events and activities commemorating a uniquely storied history. The culmination of the celebrations will be a City House-wide gala taking place on September 8th, the very date of the NYAC’s founding.
