PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

Sage Advice There is an investment strategy commonly known as “selling on good news,” which states that shareholders should sell their stock and take profits after a company reports good earnings or some other positive news. Why wait for the inevitable bad news that will send the stock plummeting? In essence, take the money and run. I suppose there is some truth to that. And I suppose during the 113-year history of the MAC, we could have “sold on good news” on several occasions. Remember when we had 5,000+ members? Remember when corporations could deduct private club dues? Well, IRS rules change. Times change. Our Club has changed, but not because we took the money and ran. We don’t believe in short-term thinking. We believe in tradition and history. We believe in being part of the fabric of St. Louis, both in its past and in its future. We believe in continuing to improve and advance our great Club. To that way of thinking, I prefer the investing advice of Warren Buffet:

When we own portions of outstanding businesses with outstanding managements, our favorite holding period is FOREVER. So, as members, lets “hold our portion” of the MAC FOREVER and promote the GOOD NEWS that our Club has to offer. Here’s this month’s Presidential Bullet points detailing the GOOD NEWS I see: The green foundations’ chits have raised more than $12,000 in one-time donations to 4 F Cherry Diamond F SEPTEMBER 2016

date, including $2,500 from one member! Thank you to our generous donors. Our foundations’ All-Star Program also launched in August. Our Board and senior staff are fully invested! Will you join us in supporting our three foundations? Have you met Morgan Franke in our membership department yet? You should. She has been with us for six months and is making a big impact. Although some state governments can’t approve a balanced budget (I’m looking at you Illinois), your elected MAC Board of Governors can. At our August Board meeting, we approved the budget for fiscal year 2017, which starts Sept. 1. The budget includes aggressive, but realistic, targets for revenues and membership gains and continues to pay down debt at a significant pace. The budget also includes a 3% dues increase, which will be reflected on your September statement. The Board believes this increase, roughly $6 per month per member, is essential to the financial health of our Club. A big thank you to Governor Andrew Carter and Finance Chair Duffy Dunn who worked diligently alongside CFO Larry Absheer and Accounting Manager Pam Roth to get the budget right. Thanks team! 1903 revenues have been above “plan” in our first full two months of operation. A pattern we think will increase come fall thanks in part to our beautiful patio. Come enjoy a glass of wine outside! Speaking of 1903 have you ordered a “President Robertson” cocktail from our mixologist Dianna yet? You’ll be glad you did. Lastly, I received preliminary drawings this week detailing our future athletic upgrades/ expansion. While they are truly preliminary, nothing is set in stone yet; it is exciting to envision the transformation of our athletic spaces at both locations. Stay tuned! Let’s continue to work together to “hold our investment FOREVER” and push the Club forward. In service,

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

When so many good things are happening at the Club, writing this column is easy. I enjoy using this space to extend shouts of praise and accolades to the many great members and employees associated with the MAC. With a Club as multi-faceted as ours, many people positively impact a number of areas, and while the roles of member versus staff are quite different, together everyone makes this organization great. I want to start with a flashback to 1996 when Jerry Maguire made the phrase, “Show me the money!” famous worldwide. That same year, the MAC was singing a similar tune when the decision was made to hire Larry Absheer as Chief Financial Officer. Since then, he has managed the Club’s finances and related entities. You could characterize him as the captain, keeping this great ship (and occasionally me) out of troubled financial waters, or a roughrider who reigns in the wild horse. Either way, he is a man of much accomplishment. After joining the staff at the MAC, Larry established the City and Athletic Club Financial Executives organization (CACFE) to advance the profession of club financial management by fulfilling the educational, informational, and related needs of its members. The organization is hosting its 20th gathering at the MAC this September. Controllers from major athletic clubs all across North America will be joining us at the MAC for a three-day summit. When not busy improving the quality of club life, Larry enjoys spending time with his wife Jane 6 F Cherry Diamond F SEPTEMBER 2016

»

and his dog Scooter. In August, Larry celebrated 20 years with the MAC, and we celebrated him as an invaluable member of our staff. Please join me in thanking Larry for his 20 years of dedicated service. Another staff member deserving of praise is Crystal Nelson who was recently promoted from Rooms Coordinator to Guest Service Manager at the Downtown Clubhouse. Crystal has been promoted multiple times since she began working for the Club in 2007. This is just a testament to her strong work ethic, problem-solving skills, positive demeanor and professionalism. When you see her smiling face in the lobby or at the front desk, please join me in congratulating Crystal on this well-deserved promotion. I also want to give a shout out to two of our staff members who epitomize the spirit of the MAC. In the past, I’ve unofficially given Michael Gray the title Ambassador of Happiness because he exudes pleasantries to all who come into contact with him. His charming nature makes him an excellent addition to our membership team, and similar to Najah Fennoy, he understands our Club’s values of tradition, community and culture. Najah is well educated in finance and uses her knowledge to search for catering and hotel opportunities as our Director of New Opportunities. Speaking of tradition, community and culture, we just wrapped up the first annual Foundations’ Month. The Cherry Diamond went to print before the golf tournament finale, but I want to thank everyone who helped kickoff the All-Star program by pledging a one-time or monthly gift to the foundations. To see the outpouring of support and commitment for our foundations is just incredible. The Board of Governors and senior staff members are all committed. Also, read the stories on page 27 about other thoughtful gifts from our members. Another person with a great eye for the financial future of the Club is Treasurer, Duffy Dunn. Since joining the Board of Governors three years

ago, he has worked very hard to help balance the budget and given thoughtful, strategic consideration to the dues increase mentioned in President Robertson’s column. We are extremely appreciative of his hard work, and want to extend a warm, heartfelt congratulation to him and his wife Megan on the recent birth of their baby girl. Another member involved in the strategic planning for the Club’s future is Brandon Dempsey who is working closely with Governor Beckette on the Planning Committee. Brandon, thank you for your personal dedication to this endeavor. Also, I want to congratulate him and his wife Adriene on the recent birth of their daughter. To the many other members and staff who appreciate and embody our values of tradition, community and culture, I extend my sincerest thanks. You know who you are; keep up the good work. Separate but together; we make this organization great. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Vermouth: It’s Not Just for Martinis A Look into the World of Apéritif By Nichole Miller-Kirk, Certified Wine Specialist In any dining situation, there are so many opportunities to perform pairings that complement the dishes we have chosen to enjoy. Apéritif is an offering that I feel has fallen by the wayside over the years, but for me, I never begin a dinner without one. Apéritif are intended to insatiate the palate; something that will make you salivate and open up the taste buds to prepare for the onslaught of flavor about to commence. Apéritif is never any single type of alcoholic beverage but can be fulfilled by a number of various possibilities: fortified wines, liqueurs, vermouths and dry champagne are the most common. At 1903, we carry a vast array of options that fit this category. Vermouth, being my favorite, is an aromatize, fortified wine that begins with a neutral base spirit and is then infused with any number of botanicals: barks, herbs, roots and so forth. Most consumers are familiar with vermouth in the sense that it is an ingredient in many cocktails, mostly in martinis. But to enjoy a vermouth on the rocks with a twist is a perfect start to an amazing meal and in certain instances it can be an incredible pairing given the right culinary counterparts. There are two main styles: French and Italian. The French styles tend to be more on the sweet side with elements of delicate flowers and hints of citrus while the Italian vermouths tend to be more on the dry side of the spectrum. Dolin Blanc, hailing from Chambery France, has this delicious marzipan sweetness with notes of bright Meyer lemon that when served on ice is a cocktail in and of itself. In the Italian camp, we offer such examples as Aperol for that more savory and bitter option. Aperol is made of orange, gentian root and rhubarb and while having a citrus note is bitterer than its French counterparts. Aperol is often seen in a spritzer with the addition of a dry sparkling wine, but on its own is quite a flavorful experience. While creating the offerings at the 1903, I wanted to be sure to include a vast array of Apéritif in order to showcase these delectable liqueurs and their many applications. In an effort to make these more accessible, we will offer Apéritif flights in two, three and four pour options. Come on in, and let us pour you a flight. We can explore their many properties together…one sip at a time. Cheers!

Junior Team Tennis Excels

The summer of 2016 was another successful year of Junior Team Tennis at the MAC. Youth ages 6-18 participated in the program that placed MAC tennis players up against other local clubs in a fun, competitive environment. Notable finishes include the 10 Beginner team, coached by Andy Coon, who won second place at districts; the 14 Silver team, coached by Will Brown, who won first place in the regular season and at districts; and the 14 Advanced team, coached by Max Shapiro, who placed first in the regular season and second at districts and sectionals.

TENNIS TIP When watching the best male and female tennis players in the world, the “feeling” these players exude is apparent. The best volleys happen when tennis players let the racquet absorb the pace of the received ball, similar to catching a baseball in a mitt. Students should attempt to stop the tennis ball on the racquet by opening the racquet strings slightly towards the sky and laying their wrists back (fingers pointed up and back). A good result is a ball that pops straight up into the air or just completely stops in place. Executing this move is the first step in developing the “feel” in the volley, which then translates into increased control and accuracy. 12 F Cherry Diamond F SEPTEMBER 2016

Racquetball Program Influences Juniors’ Lives By MAC member, Thomas Elfrink Racquetball at the MAC provides an opportunity for friendly competition for participants of all ages and skill levels. This is especially true for two families who watched their children develop from young novice players into championship-level players with the assistance of their fathers and MAC racquetball professional, David Schwent. Jeff Otto started bringing his son Andrew to play racquetball in the MAC’s Tuesday night league when Andrew was 13 years old. He competed against players who were older and had much more experience playing racquetball, but Andrew kept learning and improving his game with assistance from his father Jeff, Dave Schwent and other helpful members of the racquetball league. Eventually, Andrew progressed to play competitively at DeSmet High School. He finished in the top three in the state championships all four years of high school and was named All-State in his senior year. In college, Andrew played racquetball for Indiana University and Saint Louis University. While at SLU, he helped his team finish in the top 10 of the National Racquetball Championship. Dr. David Lazenby and his sons Zach, Alex and Nick are also MAC members who excel at racquetball. Dr. Lazenby coached Parkway Central High School Racquetball for 10 years. His oldest son, Nick, won varsity doubles. Alex, the second oldest son, was a two-time All-State player and high school All-American his senior year. Lazenby’s youngest son, Zack, was a three-time All-State racquetball player and three-time All-American player while at Parkway Central. He finished high school as number one seed in the state with a 49-1 record, which is the most wins for a number one seed in Missouri State High School Racquetball’s 40-year history.

PGA Junior League Wins Championship Congratulation to the MAC’s PGA Junior League team for winning the league championship! Maria Palozola will now be the All-Star team captain. The following five MAC players attained spots on the All-Star team: Timmy Powers, Gabe Ducey, Darren Teh, Alex Miller and Sage Bradshaw. Steady play from Annie Lauber, Andy Teh, Hank and Grant Walbert, Joseph Medley, Cole Long and Kaleb Dentinger helped propel the team to first place.

MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List Announced A total of 64 NCAA Division I soccer players from around the country have been named contenders for the 2016 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch list. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer presented annually to one male and one female player. The winners will be announced at the MAC’s awards banquet on Friday, Jan. 6. Twenty-four of the 36 women’s players on this year’s Watch List were 2015 All-Americans, led by West Virginia’s Kadeisha Buchanan who was also one of three finalists for last year’s Hermann Trophy. Buchanan was a member of Canada’s national team that competed at the Rio Olympics. Four former MAC Hermann Trophy winners (Christen Press, Kelley O’Hara, Crystal Dunn and Morgan Brian) represented

the U.S. at the Olympic Games. Of the 28 men’s players on this year’s Watch List, a dozen earned 2015 NSCAA All-American recognition. Four were semifinalists in last year’s Hermann Trophy voting including SMU junior Mauro Cichero, UC Santa Barbara junior Nick DePuy, Denver senior Reagan Dunk and Seattle junior David Olsen. From a pool of 30 players voted on by NCAA Division I coaches, six finalists (three men, three women) will be invited to the MAC for the banquet. Eat, Drink andBe Married Planning a dream wedding comes down to the details – by Rebecca Biundo Many dream about their wedding day years before meeting their spouse. The wedding fantasies often begin in childhood with the coupling of Barbies and Beanie Babies or a faux ceremony on the playground. Fast-forward about 20 years to the actual engagement, and those fantasies are no longer so fanciful. From the cake to the shoes to the color scheme to the food, the pressure is on, and heads begin to spin. Few will deny that planning a wedding is stressful. From finding the perfect dress to narrowing a guest list to picking a venue, it’s no wonder many brides, grooms and their parents feel overwhelmed. However, selecting the right venue and vendors can really ease the stress. The Missouri Athletic Club is a highly acclaimed wedding venue. Read the excerpts from some truly satisfied patrons, and get some planning tips from our Cherry Diamond:

BUDGET While number crunching may be the least fun part of wedding planning, it is essential for setting expectations and planning purposes. One of the biggest factors to consider when budgeting is the number of guests to

invite. It’s probably safe to assume that approximately 80% of the invited guests will attend. Take that number and multiply it by the amount of seating, food, drink, programs, favors, thank you notes, etc. and watch the expense grow. Also, consider the cost of invitations, postage, and the size of the venue needed to accommodate everyone. From there, determine a budget for attire, flowers, photography, music, bridal party gifts, transportation, honeymoon and all of the other extras!

TIME AND PLACE Once an approximate headcount has been established, then begin researching venues that have space to accommodate the bridal party, family, and guests and have availability on the bride and groom’s preferred date or season.

SEASON OF LOVE When planning a wedding, everything centers on the availability of the chosen date: preferred venue, caterer, photographer, florist, musicians,

We had a truly wonderful and memorable experience at my daughter’s wedding reception. The ballroom was spectacular and the service from the entire staff for the reception, dinner, and bar service was impeccable. Compliments to the Chefs for the terrific food, presentation, and beautiful as well as tasty wedding cake. Even the shuttle exceeded our expectations. From the beginning of the process, the MAC wedding planners are to be commended for their outstanding performance…a hearty thank you to the MAC staff for creating a night we will never forget. – Jim W.

PINSPIRATION Once some of the practical pieces of wedding planning have been established, brides and grooms should look for inspiration to give their celebration a personal flare. Today’s wedding inspiration comes from places such as reality TV shows, bridal magazines, Pinterest, The Knot and other wedding websites galore! To help manage the plethora of ideas, create a board—online or physical—and save ideas to incorporate into the big day. While many TV shows can be over the top and unrealistic, inspiration can come from binge watching a handful of “Four Weddings.”

DO IT YOURSELF While discovering inspiration for centerpieces, flowers, decorations, favors and much more, some may seem simple enough and cost-effective

to make yourself. Before getting started, get answers to these questions: F Do you have the time? F Do you have the skills? F What is the actual cost of materials and time? Do-it-yourself is great if the final product doesn’t cause added stress, break the bank, or look homemade with finished. Before committing, find some good step-by-step tutorials and make a few test samples to determine if this is the best route. If it’s not, but store bought doesn’t seem to be an option, consider hiring a crafter to bring your inspiration to life.

There are no words to describe the feelings that we all have as we reflect over the wedding. Everything about the whole evening and weekend was amazing, and we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. The bride and groom were blown away! They could not stop smiling! Our guests were so impressed. If I heard it once, I heard it 220 times – the room is gorgeous, the food phenomenal (really phenomenal), cake delicious, and so on. The service was spectacular, and all of the details were in place. Thank you from the bottom of our really grateful, smiling hearts. You are the best! – Anne F.

COLOR ME MARRIED

if the bride and groom prefer a more complex flavor, choose a cake with a little more decadence. It’s your cake and you’re going to eat it, too.

While orange may be the new black, it may or may not be the perfect hue for a wedding color scheme. Colors may seem like a small detail, but they can be central to planning the décor and ambiance of the ceremony and reception and often align with the decision to go classical or trendy. Keep in mind that trendy colors may make wedding photos look dated over time. However, marriage is all about longevity so let the years show!

PIECE OF CAKE It has been said that you can’t have your cake and eat it too, but it’s your wedding so do both! As a longstanding tradition of weddings, cake or cupcakes, which have become trendy, is an important detail not to miss. Taste different cake combinations and decide on the winning flavor. A classic flavor may be an instant hit with guests, but

#YOURNAMEPARTYOFTWO #YOURNAMEWEDDINGPUN #WEDDING #YAY Hashtags: the epitome of the modern wedding. It’s likely that most weddings will now ask you to tag pictures on social media with a hashtag. This way the bride and groom can see everyone’s photos instantaneously. If deciding to include a hashtag for your wedding, make it clever and punchy to leave a longer lasting impression; keeping it simple so it’s easy to remember.

THINK ABOUT DRINKS While open bars have been a staple of weddings throughout the decades, many couples are now opting for a limited bar menu, offering unlimited beer and

wine and a specialty mixed drink. A consumption bar, much like an open bar, is where the host pays for each drink rather than a one-time fee. Cash bars are less popular because it requires guests to pay for their own drinks. However, a soft bar includes wine, beer and champagne, all paid by the host. If you want to include spirits on the limited bar menu, offer a white bar, which serves clear and white alcohols including white wine.

PUMP UP THE JAM When it comes to dancing, the one thing everyone needs is great music. Whether hiring a DJ, a live band, or using Spotify, the playlist is key to getting the party started. Each type of entertainment brings its own energy. A DJ is a surefire way to hear great music, have personalized introductions and enjoy the Macarena. A live band brings a certain energy that recorded music cannot.

It was a great celebration, and it could not have turned out any better. Your team did a fantastic job, and we could not be more pleased! Your professionalism in all the details was exceptional, and we are most appreciative. – Diane H. While more expensive, a live band offers a special performance customized for a special night. Alternatively, making a playlist is becoming more and more popular with modern weddings. Playlists can significantly cut music costs, ensure the bride and groom will hear their favorite tunes, and the volume level can be easily controlled. Just designate a trustworthy person to monitor the music so the bride and groom and focus their attention elsewhere.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR Traditionally, guests receive party favors at the end of the wedding. The favor can be anything from a bag of almonds to commemorative bubbles, just something thanking the guests for participating in the celebration. Modern wedding favors include bottles of olive oil, personalized koozies, sunglasses and more.

OH SNAP! Hire a photographer/videographer that will capture all of the memories and special moments. From the “I dos” to the first dance to dancing the night away, every moment counts. Make a checklist of must-have shots and talk with the photographer about not missing a single moment.

EXTRAS Activities like photo booths and newlywed games have become increasingly popular at wedding receptions. Add some extra flair by including fun stations like a candy bar, date night jar or even a unique guest book. Any of these extras can put a personal spin on the traditional wedding and leave guests and the newlyweds with memories to last a lifetime. While there are many different combinations to the perfect wedding, there is only one combination that makes your day, your day. There are many options for every aspect of a wedding so planning can be a bit overwhelming. However, your big day doesn’t have to be as stressful as one may think.

MISSOURI ATHLETIC CLUB When brides, grooms, and their families look for a classically elegant setting and high-quality experience to host a wedding or a reception, the aesthetics and service of the Missouri Athletic Club far exceed expectations. Popular wedding websites such The Knot and Wedding Wire have praised the MAC, calling it “the best place in St. Louis to house a wedding reception.” The MAC has also received

Excerpts of their appreciation are noted throughout this section. THE

MAC Meeting Corner

By Director of New Opportunities, Najah Fennoy, MBA

I attended a workshop a few weeks ago with Jill Farmer on the topic of reclaiming your time, and it had been a few months since my last professional development workshop! With key takeaway points to incorporate into my daily routine, the workshop refreshingly shifted my thought process and the way I approach daily tasks. Did you know that according to the National Education Association, professional development should be required throughout the career of professionals? “Professional development programs should provide employees opportunities to gain and improve the knowledge and skills important to their positions and job performance.” One of the most compelling reasons is that achievement depends on an individual’s KSA (knowledge, skills and ability). Appropriate training and resources are vital to the quality of work and results expected from an employee. Did you hear a dynamic speaker this summer or attend a workshop that would be valuable to your staff or company’s KSA? Have you or your company considered providing a strategic update on a skill or product but just haven’t had the time? Can you afford to go another year without “sharpening” your staff’s tools? Why wait another year? Let the Catering Team at the Missouri Athletic Club make your business our business! We challenge you to change things up this year. All we ask you or your company to do is secure the presenter and let us plan your meetings! Need a small meeting space? We have it. Need a larger meeting room? We can accommodate. Have an A/V request? We have it on-site, plus overnight rooms and two shuttles for those extended meetings or retreats. Don’t forget the challenge…contact me today at 314-539-4448 or nfennoy@mac-stl.org.

SUPPORTING CHILDREN IN NEED: MAC’s Charitable Society for Children The Missouri Athletic Club has three foundations that epitomize our values of tradition, community, and culture. An extension of the Sports Foundation’s outreach to the community is the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children (CSC), which is also a Club Within the Club (CWC). On an annual basis, the CSC selects three local children’s charities to provide monetary support. The Cherry Diamond strives to highlight each charity throughout the year, and this month is focused on the Maggie Welby Foundation. The Maggie Welby Foundation was created to honor the life and memory of Maggie Welby by providing financial aid to children in need so they can follow Maggie’s example of living life to the fullest. In 2005, seven-yearold Maggie Welby died suddenly of a brainstem subependymoma, a rare tumor that affects the brain and

central nervous system. Prior to her death, Maggie was an outgoing, bubbly child with a big heart. Maggie left a strong impact on her friends and family. Shortly after her death, her parents, Jim and Jamie Welby created the Maggie Welby Foundation to assist families with financial aid. More than a decade later, her family continues to focus on helping children, kindergarten through twelfth grade, through financial aid. They have funded more than $500,000 in scholarships and grants since starting the foundation. To learn more about the Maggie Welby Foundation, go to www.maggiewelby.org. For more information about the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children, login to the MAC website and go to www.mac-stl.org/pvtclubs-within-theclub or Social > Clubs Within the Club.

Dynamic Donations The Summer Ladies A Tennis Interclub won their past season and donated their winnings to the Charitable Society for Children! Special thanks to Robin Garlich, Suzi Yannakakis, Julie Reinauer, Allie Zumwalt, Carla Burkart, Donna Krutzman, Melissa Kantrovitz and Suzi Yannakakis for helping support the CSC. Five philanthropic youngsters from the MAC sports camp decided to raise money for the Foundation for the Arts and offered “massages” for money! They donated $11.88 (matched with $12 from West Clubhouse manager Darrin Harnetiaux) and exemplified the importance of giving to the foundations! Way to go!

ALL ABOUT WOMEN:

The Women’s Initiative Committee By Rebecca Biundo When the Missouri Athletic Club opened its doors in 1903, the membership was comprised solely of men. Since then, a perception persists that the MAC is a “men’s club.” However, in 1988, membership was extended to include women, and women have become active members of the Club since then. Women hold primary memberships, sit on the Board of Governors, chair Clubs Within the Club and committees, and use the facilities daily. By 2009, women had become such valuable assets to club life that the Women’s Initiative Committee was created to further encourage female membership. The Women’s Initiative Committee is comprised of active female members who want to become more involved in the Club. From planning lunches to hosting book clubs to fencing, committee members encourage female members to join. Upcoming events sponsored by the Women’s Initiative Committee include a “Sip and Shop” holiday shopping event on Nov. 16 and annual networking happy hour on Jan. 18. The annual Women of Distinction Luncheon will take place in April 2017. To get involved with the Women’s Initiative Committee, contact committee chairperson, Anna DeSaix, at 314-330-8888 or email anna.desaix@yahoo.com.

JOYNER-KERSEE HOLDS THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS TORCH DURING LAST YEAR’S RELAY.

Another member who has influenced the Club and the surrounding St. Louis area is Dr. Blanche M. Touhill, who became DR. BLANCHE a member in the midM. TOUHILL sixties. Touhill was a Woman of Distinction honoree in 2014. Dr. Touhill felt a calling to become a teacher in urban, public and higher education schools early on in her life and was the first woman to journey through the tenure process at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Touhill held the title of chancellor for 12 years and worked on obtaining funds for the university’s performing arts center, which was named in her honor. Cherry Diamond F SEPTEMBER 2016 F 29

Now, having entered the digital photography age, she has been honing her skills since 2012, and is especially fond of landscape and macro photography. She specializes in photographing St. Louis’ Tower Grove Park in all four seasons. Interested primarily in nature, she is nonetheless open to capturing other subjects as well, such as people, businesses, architecture, small events and local parks. Camera in hand, when the morning or evening light is perfect, she’ll sometimes set out on photographic jaunts around St. Louis

Her driving passion is to capture and put on display the incredible beauty of God’s creation. In doing so, she hopes to open eyes to the God-authored natural (and sometimes man-made) beauty around us, which can be seen in texture, line, pattern and color. Her work is an effort to draw people closer to Him for He is the ultimate standard of beauty. He gets all the glory and honor; Kari just revels in His handiwork.

If created things are so utterly lovely, how gloriously beautiful must be He who made them! – Anthony of Padua Along the way, Kari has also had some small successes: winning some awards in contests, having two works of art included in the juried Manchester Arts Inside/Outside Art Exhibit (July 2016), getting published in newsletters, magazines and a Door County, Wis. photo book, selling cards and bookmarks at two local businesses, and earning posts on Facebook and Instagram.
