from the president What a great summer! The MAC was on the top of our family’s list of most frequent and most favorite places to visit – I hope it was the same for you! Summer is winding down, but we can start looking forward to the next wave of events and excitement at the MAC. Check out the rest of the Cherry Diamond for that extensive list. It’s easy to get excited as the MAC just enjoyed one of its best fiscal years in many years. I want to extend my sincerest thanks to Wally and the MAC staff for a great year. These past 12 months have provided the necessary cash flow to replenish our working capital, address long-term liabilities, and prepare for necessary capital INVESTMENT for the next 12 months. It was a conscious decision by staff and the Board to spend very little on capital items this past year. Instead, the Board and staff utilized this past year to save money and carefully consider future investments based on the needs of our membership. Here are a few highlights of FY 2017 and the plans for FY 2018: F The Board of Governors is close to Introducing a strategic plan that will actively be used to ensure our long-term financial health and growth for the Club. This was a major goal of Past President Robertson, and I have made it a priority to finish that effort in FY 2018. F FY 2017 ended with a membership increase of 72 net New members. This is one of the highest membership increases in more than 11 years. F FY 2017 operating activities generated more than $700,000 in net revenue, which provides Viable options for the Club in

addressing long-ignored assets. F The strong membership activity and operations from FY 2017 created more than $2.0 million in positive cash flow. F The strong cash flow in FY 2017 allowed the Club to meet all long-term financial obligations as well as improve its overall debt ratio. F Our budget subcommittee and Finance Committee, made up of talented and Energized members, spent a considerable amount of time analyzing the results of FY 2017 as they drafted the budget for FY 2018. For the first time, this budget process included input from our Planning Committee, which utilized the recent Survey and other feedback to provide recommendations on capital expenditures. F After working with our Talented committees, the Board of Governors approved the FY 2018 budget. This budget includes a 2% dues increase that will take effect on your September statement. This increase averages about $3.73 per month for each Member (the actual increase ranges from $1.50 to $6.25). This increase is necessary to continue our path towards financial strength, and it helps to offset the regular cost of living increases within our general operations. F The FY 2018 budget also includes a 4% capital fee increase that will support a significant Effort to reinvest in our two locations. This increase averages $1.43 per month per member and will generate $70,000 annually towards capital improvements. F Careful thought and dialogue were given to these increases. The Board is sensitive to our members’ financial commitment but

wants to ensure that we can sustain our path towards a better financial picture. We want to minimize the Need for larger dues increases in the future by prudently reinvesting in our locations, lowering our financial exposure, and providing quality operations. F A substantial increase in our capital spending is planned for FY 2018. Specifically, you will see significant renovations in our fitness areas at both clubhouses. Spaces at both locations will be repurposed to facilitate new exercise classes. The parking lot at the West Clubhouse will receive a much-needed facelift. In FY 2017, we were intentionally less active in capital spending to help build our savings and address our long-term liabilities. We are using FY 2018 to start addressing those priorities that were identified in our strategic planning process. These efforts will continue to Transform and solidify our platinum Club. Our Board is excited to keep the positive momentum from FY 2017 going. Through our strategic planning process, we have given thoughtful consideration to our members’ wishes and the Club’s needs for the future. We believe the budget for FY 2018 provides a pathway to start reinvesting in both locations. Not everyone will get what they want, but the overall result from this new investment will reaffirm the quality and character of the Club. This is going to be FUN. Thank you for the opportunity to be here during these exciting times!!

Mike Schoedel, President Missouri Athletic Club

from the general manager Recently, you’ve heard a lot from Club leaders about the MAC’s financials, foundations and upcoming capital projects. These are all very important aspects of the Club that deserve attention. However, the lifeblood of this Club is its people: members and staff. Our staff share the same love for MAC as its members; the positive attitudes, smiling faces and years of dedicated service are just a few of the indicators. I’m dedicating this column to recognizing a few of our hardworking, funloving, dedicated staff. Emma Frey in our Communication Department recently said to me, “Everything at the MAC runs so seamlessly. It’s crazy to think about how many people are doing their jobs well to make that happen.” She compared it to the gears on a clock moving separately but together to make the clock function perfectly, and she’s right. Another comparable aspect of that analogy is that usually the gears of a clock are unseen, but functioning well nonetheless, which is true for many of our staff. Behind-the-scenes, our Human Resources department led by Chris Maurer annually plans two employee appreciation events. The Employee Service Awards are held in the spring. During the summer, most recently in August, an Employee Appreciation event is held. For this year’s event, on Chris’ staff, Rachel and Courtney planned a BBQ for staff in the MAC parking garage followed by tickets to the Cardinals game from the Brew House Rooftop in Ballpark Village. Below is a photo of some of the staff who attended. As you can see, that great spirit of camaraderie exists not

only between our members, but amongst our staff as well. Also, thanks to all the Governors who took the time to join us and show their appreciation. I also want to recognize our Human Resources department for offering a stellar wellness program for our staff. The North American Association of Club Athletic Directors (NACAD) recently awarded the MAC the Employee Program of the Year award for our great wellness program, Vitality. This is a tremendous accomplishment and testament to the benefits we offer our staff. Another notable accomplishment goes out to Pam Roth, our Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting and the great team of people that she leads – Mindy, Cory, Crystal, and Heather. I’m not exaggerating when I say that she keeps our books perfectly. Our adjusters and auditors haven’t had to make an adjusting entry in more than three years. Also, special thanks to Heather for handling all our billing issues as eloquently and professionally as she does with a smile and great attitude. As you read through this issue, you’ll see many highlights on upcoming capital projects. Did you know that the work for most of these projects is done in-house by our awesome facilities staff? We outsource to selected vendors as needed, but for the most part, Skip Bowders, our Facilities and Engineering Manager acts as orchestrator and employs his multi-talented staff of carpenters, electricians, engineers, HVAC technicians, etc. to complete our projects. Think about this for a minute: This summer, we installed a new Hermann Trophy display in the lobby of the Downtown

Clubhouse. Mike Lotz, a skilled carpenter, made the new display with wood from June 2017 seamlessly match the existing wood from 1916! I challenge you to take a close look at the display and see if you can determine the difference. It’s incredible work. From large projects to small projects such as the Hermann Trophy display or coat room in the lobby, our facilities staff makes every attempt to preserve the historic architecture and early 1900s period feel of the MAC. Whenever I look at a completed project and I tell Skip that he did a great job, he always replies that he didn’t do it; it was his staff. They are a great team. Thank you, Skip, Ricki, Mike, Chris, Edin, Dennis, Luther, Darryl, Brian, William, Ian, Hajro, Igor, and Joe! I can’t stop there. As I write this column, today, we celebrated Betty Hine’s 40th anniversary at the Club. That is truly more than a lifetime for many of our staff. In January, we’ll celebrate Pam Evans who has hospitably served the Club for more than 33 years, as she prepares to retire and take on new adventures. Thirty-six staff members have worked for the MAC for more than 20 years, and eight have worked at the Club for more than 30 years! These great people share your love for the Missouri Athletic Club, and their passion makes this a great place for you to enjoy. During the 2017 fiscal year, we set records in almost every area of the Club. Our membership count is growing, our revenue is growing, and our camaraderie growing – stronger than ever. This is an awesome place because it’s comprised of awesome people who love the Club. We’re all excited for the upcoming fiscal year, which promises a plethora of new projects and new offerings for our members. Please join me in thanking our staff who do their jobs so well and ensure that everything runs seamlessly like the gears of a clock. See you at the Club!

from the athletic director While summer may officially be winding down, this momentum is carrying into the fall. It’s an exciting time to be a member. Thank you to all members who completed the survey earlier this year. We’ve heard that our fitness and athletic offerings are a priority to you, and we’re striving to continuously provide the best programs and facilities. Our latest goal is to renovate and install upgrades in the athletic and fitness departments at both clubhouses. By the time this magazine is published, we’ll be putting the finishing touches on one of many things to come. At the Downtown Clubhouse, the space previously used to house the golf simulator is being renovated into a functional training space. The renovation should be done in early September. Immediately after completing that project, we’ll begin renovating the space previously used for Judo on the 11th floor. It is being converted into a state-of-the-art group exercise and training space. Following that project, we’re planning a complete renovation of the Downtown Clubhouse’s weight room with a variety of new equipment and more training space.

Plans are also underway for the West Clubhouse. The Planning Committee and its task forces are meeting regularly to review the results of the membership survey and develop a plan that aligns with what you want and expect for our clubhouses. Some of the projects being considered include dedicated rooms for spinning, yoga, and Pilates; a functional training space; expanded weight room; and improved racquetball area. The goal is to initiate projects that align with members’ wants vocalized through the membership survey. We want to ensure that the MAC is meeting all of your needs. As other local clubs and fitness centers make improvements and build new facilities, we intend to stay competitive and more attractive than ever. Many of the fitness projects coming in the next few years are expected to attract future members and be a huge benefit to existing members. In addition to these exciting projects, the MAC is co-hosting the World Squash Championship Doubles Tournament in September and possibly a professional racquetball tournament in late November. For the September tournament, approximately

100 of the top squash professionals in the world will compete in St. Louis at the MAC and Racquet Club. This is great for the Club and for growth of the sport in St. Louis and the Midwest. The previous tournament was hosted in Chicago, and Chicago hopes it will return for the next tournament to keep this growing sport in the Midwest. Check out the feature story on pages 16-17 to learn more about this prestigious tournament, and plan to attend and see the highest level of competition for this sport. We’ll share more information about the upcoming racquetball tournament as those details are finalized. Finally, I’m looking forward to our awesome fall programming for basketball leagues and racquet sports to start back up again. It was truly a spectacular summer, and I’m excited to see how this momentum continues in the following months. See you at the Club,

Jeff Tuhro Athletic Director

Q You just joined the Club! What made you interested in membership? A In 2008, I spoke about my Mission Continues Fellowship at the West Clubhouse with Governor Eric Greitens. I remember being nervous, but I was very impressed with how supportive, encouraging, and generous all the MAC members were towards us during our presentation. Nine years later, Jim Sheets gave a presentation for us at the Veterans Business Resource Center. He was raising funds to support the Fisher House that helps wounded veterans. Seeing how passionate Jim was about helping the Fisher House and my previous experience at the MAC helped guide me to becoming a member myself and be around like-minded people. Q How have you gotten involved? A I have been playing basketball on Wednesday mornings, which has been a great experience. I was getting bored doing the same workout routines so this provides me with a different outlet. I also attended the Military History Club event that hosted an outstanding guest speaker that served in Vietnam. Q Do you plan on utilizing both clubhouses? A I do plan on using both clubhouses. I hire many veterans that work around the downtown area, and we also clean many facilities in West County. This provides me the opportunity to work out at the location where I am going to do business for that day.

Q Do you plan to host any meetings or events at the Club? A I do plan on hosting a few events. Both of the clubhouses are great facilities with exceptional staff. Q What is one aspect of the Club that has stood out to you since joining? A One thing I really missed when leaving the military was the bonds you get to build with other people while serving. I have been extremely impressed with the camaraderie of all the members who attend the MAC. How open and welcoming everyone is really sticks out, and that is something the MAC and its members should be very proud of.

HERMANN TROPHY Watch Lists Announced

Prior to the start of the college soccer season, United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club announced the 61 NCAA Division I players named to the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch Lists. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year’s winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 5, 2018 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. Florida Gulf Coast University senior Albert Ruiz and University of Maryland junior Gordon Wild were MAC Hermann Trophy finalists a year ago, and they lead a group of 31 players on the Men’s Watch List for the upcoming 2017 season. Fourteen of the 31 players were United Soccer Coaches' All-Americans in 2016, including senior teammates Tomas Hilliard-Arce and Foster Langsdorf from back-to-back national champions Stanford University. A total of 30 players are included on the Women’s Watch List, headlined by 2016 finalist Andi Sullivan and four previous national champions: Florida State goalkeeper Cassie Miller, University of Southern California defender Ally Prisock and Penn State teammates Emily Ogle and Frannie Crouse. Fifteen semifinalists will be named for both the men’s and women’s MAC Hermann Trophy near the end of the college season based on voting by NCAA Division I coaches. From those candidates, three finalists will ultimately be placed on the ballot for the coveted award.

BEST in the WORLD

Prestigious Squash Tournament. Elite Players. Fierce Competition. Every two years, the best squash professionals and amateurs in the world gather in one city to compete for the title of World Champion. This year, those players are competing at the Missouri Athletic Club and the Racquet Club of St. Louis in September. MAC Director of Squash, Adam Bews is thrilled that not only is this prestigious tournament returning to the Midwest (it was held in Chicago in 2015, and slated for Toronto for 2017), but it’s going to be hosted on his home turf. He will also compete in it for the first time, representing his home country of Scotland. “This is the most prestigious doubles squash tournament in the world,” says Bews.

To have the World Championships coming to St. Louis was beyond something I could have imagined. Since coming to St. Louis, I have been amazed by the MAC’s members' support of the sport. It really is second to none. I am so happy for all involved that we were able to secure this event, and I can’t wait to bring the highest level of doubles in the world to their doorstep.” —Adam Bews MAC Director of Squash

The World Squash Doubles Championship is uniquely competitive from other squash events. Each doubles team must consist of two players from the same country, which often prevents the two best players from teaming up. For example, Manek Mathur from India who is ranked #1 in the world will play with a #40 ranked player from India. “It levels the playing field and makes the matches really exciting,” says Bews. Every country is guaranteed one team in the tournament, except for England and the United States who are guaranteed two teams. Once all the countries have had an opportunity to apply, if space allows for more teams, then a ranking point system determines additional teams. For example, if a country that is only allotted one team has multiple teams enter, the team with the highest ranking may compete. Players earn points by competing in tournaments throughout the year, which determines their rank. The men’s tournament is guaranteed 32 teams; the women’s 16 and the mixed doubles 16. “Players do not need to qualify to enter the tournament,” says Bews, “but must simply enter along with someone else from their own country. We speak to other pros, and enter as a team.” Bews will compete with Greg McArthur in the men’s tournament and Wendy Maitland in the mixed doubles’ tournament. If space permits, Alex Ingham, the MAC’s Assistant Director of Squash hopes to compete for England. Bews is excited to share that many MAC members such as Mark Gaertner, Keith Vidal, Will Springer, John Pruett, Pat Dolan and John Pennington will compete in the amateur event with around 15 local teams. Around 40-50 amateur teams from around the world will play.

The tournament begins on Thursday, Sept. 21 and runs through the evening of Sunday, Sept. 24. The squash courts at both the West Clubhouse and Downtown Clubhouse will be utilized during the tournament along with courts at the Racquet Club of St. Louis. “The pros and amateurs will play across all four courts,” notes Bews. “So, there will be plenty of opportunities to watch.” Approximately 80 teams comprised of 120 professionals and 100 amateurs will compete in the tournament. The competition is broken up into men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles’ categories as well as by age (40+, 50+, 60+ and 70+). The men’s event has a winner’s purse of $40,000. The ladies event boasts a $25,000 purse, and the mixed event a $15,000 purse. As far as specific teams to watch, Bews noted that Clyde Leach and John Russell will fight to retain their championship title from two years ago. Though, Matt Jenson and Scott Arnold from Australia will be strong competition. Bews encourages members to come experience the highest level of squash competition in the world. “To have the World Championships coming to St. Louis was beyond something I could have imagined,” he says. “Since coming to St. Louis, I have been amazed at the support of squash from the MAC members and Racquet Club. It really is second to none. I am so happy for all involved that we were able to secure this event, and I can’t wait to bring the highest level of doubles in the world to their doorstep.” Once available, schedules for the pro and amateur events will be posted on the MAC’s website. CONSTRUCTING a lasting legacy

For more than 100 years, the Missouri Athletic Club has been building, renovating and expanding to ensure the Club’s facilities are the go-to place for athletic, dining, and social activities. The Missouri Athletic Club is unique from other private clubs in many ways, but one factor that frequently stands out is its two locations. Since 1995, when the MAC acquired the Town and Country Racquet Club, it boasts two clubhouses. Last year, the Downtown Clubhouse celebrated the 100th anniversary of opening its doors.

The West Clubhouse was built in 1975. Both clubhouses have undergone major expansions and renovations through the years to stay relevant and accommodate members’ wants and needs and thrive as a prime destination for socializing, dining, athletics, and family functions.

In recent years, a few large upgrades took place at both clubhouses. At the Downtown Clubhouse, a $2.4 million energy-efficient retrofit of the HVAC system took place in conjunction with Set the PACE St. Louis, and the hotel room renovation project was kicked off with a large block of rooms. The West Clubhouse saw the expansion and

renovation of the 1903 bar, dining room, outdoor patio and lobby. On a smaller scale, the childcare center was completely redesigned and upgraded. Following these projects, the Board made a prudent decision to forego any major capital improvements during the 2017 fiscal year. Instead, a survey was conducted to better understand members’ future wants for the Club. Now, the 2018 fiscal year is kicking off with a new strategic plan and some exciting new projects that align with the results of the membership survey.

One of the key initiatives resulting from the survey is the expansion and renovation of the fitness facilities at both clubhouses. By the time of publication, the renovation of the room previously housing the golf simulator on 5M at the Downtown Clubhouse will be nearly complete. The space will reopen as a functional training space. This newly remodeled space will be used for group classes and personal training sessions. Another project slated to be completed by mid-November is the renovation of the fitness space on the 11th floor of the Downtown Clubhouse. Once redone, it will serve as a functional training and group exercise space. “With cutting-edge fitness equipment, be on the lookout for new challenging and fun group-based classes to be added to the schedule, including TRX and high intensity interval training,” says Downtown Clubhouse Fitness Manager, Courtney Hutt. A piece of the HVAC system on this floor that was not part of the PACE project a couple years ago will also be updated. It

will improve ventilation in the fitness area, the billiards room, the Member Lounge and the Apollos’ practice room, which will eventually be renovated to include a library. In 2015, the MAC began renovating hotel rooms that had been unusable for many years. The goal is to eventually renovate all of the hotel rooms, and the Club is tackling this initiative three rooms at a time. While three rooms are taken offline for a 60-90-day

renovation period, three newly renovated rooms are brought back into use.

WEST CLUBHOUSE

Steve Burns of V Three Studios LLC, the architect behind the West Clubhouse’s expansion and renovation of the 1903 bar and dining room, was recently re-hired to help repurpose space at the West Clubhouse to expand fitness offerings. He is working closely with Governor Tim Powers who leads the West Clubhouse task force and unites the sub task forces comprised of members representing various disciplines and offerings. In response to the member survey results, the goal is to develop dedicated spaces for specialty fitness classes such as yoga and Pilates and to expand the weight room.

In addition to these major projects, the Club is making improvements in FF&E – furniture, fixtures and equipment. The MAC is preparing to co-host the World Squash Doubles Championship in September. This is the most prestigious squash doubles tournament in the world as the top professional and amateur players compete for the world champion title. To ensure that the Club shines for this tournament, new furniture is being installed in the squash court area, and the snack bar will receive new furniture and flooring. Last month, the Downtown Clubhouse received four new FreeMotion upright bikes, a new recumbent bike and a StairMaster Airfit bike. The West Clubhouse received a couple FreeMotion upright bikes. The food and beverage department

Everybody is key to the success of these projects.” — Facilities Manager, Skip Bowders will also receive some much-needed new equipment. At the West Clubhouse, have you ever noticed the large trucks outside on big event days? The MAC utilized these trucks because there was not enough freezer space for all the food! To fix that problem, a 15’ x 25’ freezer was recently added to the kitchen as well as more production equipment for the culinary team. The Downtown Clubhouse’s bakery is excited to receive new ovens! For years, the pastry chefs have had to prepare their baked goods on one floor and then take them by elevator to another floor for baking because they did not have a functional oven on the same floor. These new ovens will

improve efficiencies and likely the quality of our already tremendous desserts.

SKILLED STAFF

The Club relies heavily on its staff to complete the majority of these renovations, only substituting occasionally with outside vendors. “We have some amazing talent on our maintenance team,” says Wally Smith, General Manager. Facility Manager, Skip Bowders, leads an amazing crew that delivers top-notch work. “Everybody is key to the success of these projects,” Skip says. He thanks his maintenance team members for the extraordinary work that’s both visible and not so visible: Christopher

Battle, Edin Biberovic, Dennis Bittner, Luther Burns, Darryl Charleston, Brian Clark, William Greenstreet, Ian Johnson, Michael Lotz, Ricki McIntosh, Hajro Sahbaz, Igor Sahbaz and Joseph Zdroj. Although members of his team have specific skill sets, they are all multi-talented. When hiring new staff, Skip ensures that each person can handle various tasks. Ultimately, these projects are for the betterment of the Club and its membership. The various upgrades, overhauls, additions and renovations will benefit current and future members and ensure that the Club and its legacy will continue for another century.

the COMMUNITY IMPACTING THROUGH THE CSC The Missouri Athletic Club has three foundations that epitomize our values of tradition, community, and culture. An extension of the Sports Foundation’s outreach to the community is the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children (CSC), which is also a Club Within the Club (CWC). On the Road Again

THE FOREVER YOUNG CLUB INSPECTS THE ARMY This summer, 30 Forever Young Club members boarded a coach and rolled west on I-44 to the main gate of Ft. Leonard Wood. The group’s mission was to compare the modern Army with the one from years ago. The group learned that FLW was founded in 1940 as an infantry training center during the build-up for WWII. Only a few wooden barracks remain from earlier times and were retained as museum pieces. Today’s soldier students live and study in modern, technologically-advanced red brick buildings. The group was first briefed on the Chemical Corps’ role as the nation’s protective force against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats. Following lunch, the group made their way to the Engagement Skills Training Center to participate in a simulation exercise. Participants fired the Army’s M-6 rifle modified for electronic scoring. After a tour of the Military Police training facilities, the group moved on to the Engineer, Chemical Corps and Military Police museums, a building so full of fascinating artifacts and illustrated stories that the FYC plans to return.

FOREVER YOUNG TO STUDY FOOD FOR THE FUTURE For their next speaker, the Forever Young Club will hear from Michael Mason, Development Officer at The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. The center houses 175 scientists working on basic plant science discovery, food security, crop improvement, and sustainable bioenergy. Mason gravitated to the Danforth Center because of its mission to improve the human condition through plant science, which resonated with his upbringing on a Missouri farm. He will discuss how the Center aims to improve human health and protect the environment through creative science and thoughtful application.

Artist OF THE Month

DANIEL FISHBACK Plein Air painting is Daniel Fishback’s favorite way to paint. He loves being outdoors and seeing the beauty of nature first hand. Daniel enjoys the immediacy and the fresh quality of capturing a scene quickly, seeing the true colors of light and shadow, and giving his personal response to a scene. Each year the artist participates in eight to ten plein air events around the Midwest. Besides plein air painting, Daniel also likes to paint still life scenes that he sets up in his studio. For him, there is no faster or better way to improve his craft than to paint frequently and to paint from life. Daniel’s subject matter comes from things that inspires him such as color harmonies, strong light and shadow patterns, strong value contrasts, interesting shapes and much more. In September 2016, Daniel served as the Steelville Missouri Art Council's "Artist in Residence.” During that month, he painted a series of waterscape paintings, held two demonstrations for high school art classes, and taught a plein air workshop. The art council held an exhibition and sale for him at the end of the residency. It was a great learning opportunity for Daniel, and he felt he grew as an artist during this time. While primarily self-taught, in 2014, Daniel began taking workshops from some nationally acclaimed artists like Phil Starke, Roger Dale Brown, Scott Christenson, Shawn Cornell, John Lasater, and CW Mundy. The artist’s paintings are in corporate and private collections around the United States and Ireland, and he has earned numerous awards and have had several solo shows. Commissions are considered and encouraged. Daniel Fishback is a member of the Art Saint Louis, Missouri Valley Impressionist Society, and Oil Painters of America. To purchase any work on display, contact Morgan Franke at 314-539-4438 or mfranke@mac-stl.org. 30 F Cherry Diamond F SEPT 2017
