PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

As we move into September, the fall routine begins as kids head back to school and college, summer activities come to an end and we look forward to cool fall days. There is a lot going on at the MAC, with some great events coming up. The Rams’ regular season kicks off Sept. 7, and this year, the MAC is excited to be partnering with KMOX on our tailgates. Come join in the action on the Downtown lot before each home game. Inside the Club, we’ll also be offering a pre-game and post-game buffet for fans. And of course, the Cardinals season isn’t over yet – come to the Club to catch a ride to all the games. Here’s hoping to another year of Cards baseball in October. On the college front, come to the MAC to grab a drink and a meal, and settle in to watch the Mizzou Tigers. Mark your calendars for Sept. 27 for a fun and very worthwhile cause – the annual charity tennis exhibition benefiting the MAC Charitable Society for Children. Watch some great tennis, as well as a sure to be entertaining badminton match with myself and fellow board members facing off against the MAC pros. For those not familiar with this Club Within the Club, each year three charities are chosen by the MAC Charitable Society as that year’s recipients, with funds raised throughout the year through events and member contributions. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2015 charities, so please reach out to committee chair Sam Hopmeier at 314-434-5266 or visit the MAC website for details. Thanks to Sam for leading this very worthwhile cause. A couple of great sports events the MAC will celebrate later this year and early next are the annual Jack Buck Sports Awards and Hermann Trophy. Now’s the time to line up your company sponsorships for these events, which not only raise the profile of the MAC in the com4 F Cherry Diamond F SEPTEMBER 2014

munity but also benefit the MAC Sports Foundation. For more information on sponsorship opportunities, contact Jim Wilson at 314-539-4488. While at the Jack Buck Awards and Hermann Trophy events we celebrate college and professional athletes, there are thousands of kids who take up sports each year. While few will go on to grace the pages of Sports Illustrated or appear on ESPN, the lessons our youth learn from athletics are invaluable, from teamwork and sportsmanship to perseverance and preparation. This month, the MAC salutes our junior athletes and the programs our Club has in place to support them. Whether your child is interested in trying a new sport, wants to take their skills to the next level or just improve overall fitness, the Club offers sports pros, coaches, trainers and programs to help them every step of the way. Check out pages 20-21 of this issue for highlights. Moving on to the business side, the Club’s fiscal year closed Aug. 31, and as of press time, we anticipate ending the year up 54 members – the second year in a row for a net increase. Our Finance Committee, chaired by Governor John Salter, also wrapped up the 2015 budget with the help of staff. The Finance Committee is made up of 20 of your peers who are non-board members, and their input is vital to the budgeting process. Part of this process included a dues adjustment, which you’ll see with your September statement. This increase, the first since 2011, will help us carry on the momentum we’ve established, allowing us to address our upcoming pension obligations, complete facility upgrades and continue to improve our programs and offerings for members. Check out Wally’s column for more details, and look for a complete 2014 wrap-up next month. And while there was a dues increase, don’t forget you can still lower your dues by $100 per month through the Platinum Partner Program, so please take advantage this way to get even more value out of the MAC. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to call me at 314-342-7176. Thanks and see you around the Club.

Membership Note Around the MAC, we talk frequently about the importance of members sharing the experience with their family, friends and colleagues and introducing them to all the benefits of the Club. And you’ve definitely been listening, as we will wrap up the 2013-14 fiscal year with another net positive gain in membership, up close to 60 members. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to bring a candidate to the Club or to share their experiences with prospective members – keep up the good work. It’s also not too late to lower your dues by becoming a Platinum Partner; to date, 845 of our members have taken advantage of this unique program. Please contact our Membership Development Depart-

ment to learn more. But we also know that our work doesn’t end once a new member joins and is approved. A member’s first experiences at the Club are critical to ensuring they feel welcomed and comfortable and are able to get immediately engaged with the programs and benefits most of interest to them. We’re excited about some of the new programs we’re putting in place to help improve this welcome process, including monthly new member orientation sessions to help them hit the ground running and meet the staff and leadership. We also know that sponsors play a crucial role in the onboarding process. If you’ve brought in a member in the past six to

12 months, we encourage you to take a moment to reach out to them and check in about their experience. As always, please do not hesitate to contact our Membership Development Department if you have any questions or feedback or would like to refer a potential candidate. GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

As I write this, I’m still shivering a little from taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Hopefully you caught the video on the MAC’s social media streams, or check out page 25 of this issue. One of my victims … I mean challenges … was Finance Chair John Salter, who I figured would welcome the opportunity to “chill out” after wrapping up the new budget. All kidding aside, he and his committee, along with the board and accounting staff, have done a great job in putting together a thorough plan that will continue the momentum we’ve built over the past year. We wrapped up the 2013-14 fiscal year on Aug. 31, with solid growth in our Rooms, Catering and Membership buckets. There’s always room for improvement, but these gains put us in a nice position heading into the new fiscal year. Generating strong profits in these areas not only supports the overall Club but allows us to continue making improvements. As a private nonprofit organization, any extra dollars generated go right back into the Club. In addition, some of the capital improvement projects we’ve identified for the coming year will continue this

»

growth. For example, we have several overnight guests rooms that have been offline for years; with some improvements in the coming months we’ll be converting them from a stagnant asset to a new productive revenue stream. We’ll also be launching a new online reservations system, available for members booking rooms and guests visiting from reciprocal clubs. Our budget and strategic plan also reflects our desire to continually improve member services and programs. On the athletics front, our “Athletic Director of the Year” Jeff Tuhro and Fitness Manager Paul Helfrich have identified some cardio equipment that will improve our fitness offerings at both clubhouses. We’re also excited to welcome our new Squash Director Adam Bews, who comes to us from The Field Club of Greenwich in Connecticut. A native of Scotland, Adam is ranked in the top 35 in the world on the Squash Doubles Association Tour and won the National League title. His experience as a competitive junior player, as well as establishing and growing junior programs at other clubs, will be a huge asset as he continues the progress Heidi Mather made in our overall squash programs. While the end goal is to improve the overall member experience, much of the work takes place behind the scenes. Our new Food & Beverage Managers Tamer El-Adawy and John Reed have been cross-training the staff on new service standards to make sure we’re ready for the busy fall and winter party season. We’ll also be getting some new kitchen equipment to help our culinary staff, led by Chef Bart and Chef Grant, continue to raise the bar for dining experiences. (I mean, we do have a na-

tional award-winning chef in our midst after all – check out page 8 for details!) We’ve also made good headway in addressing life safety issues at the club, which were identified by the board several years back. Many projects have been completed, and this year, all of these projects identified have been completed on Floors 7 to 10, and we’ll now be working on the remainder of the list. At West, planned projects include addressing the parking lot drainage issues and cleaning up the lots. So you can see we have an ambitious, but completely doable, plan laid out for the coming year. All of this is possible because of the gains we’ve made in recent years, from identifying internal cost efficiencies to turning the tide on membership. As President Eggerding noted in his column, the modest dues adjustment recently approved by the board, the first since 2011, is designed to keep us moving in the right direction while allowing us to fulfill our ongoing pension obligations. Our board, finance committee and staff strive to be good stewards of your investment to ensure that the MAC remains one of the premier clubs in the country – and a place you are proud to call home. While I usually close this column with “see you at the club,” I’d also love to see all of you at one of our upcoming Rams tailgates, hosted in conjunction with KMOX Radio this year, among the plethora of other activities here at the MAC.

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

MAC Chef Puts His Talent to the Test Chef Bart prepares to compete in the Great American Seafood Cook-off.

One basket of mystery ingredients, four accomplished chefs and just 60 minutes – that was the challenge faced by MAC Executive Chef Barton Philipps in the Chef Throw-Down last month in New Orleans. He proved what MAC members and diners have known for years, capturing the win with his creativity, culinary skill and presentation. Philipps, a Certified Executive Chef, has been with the MAC since 1998. The new “Chopped”-style competition was part of the 11th annual Great American Seafood Cook-off, hosted by the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board. This year’s event was the largest and most competitive in its history, with 18 chefs from across the nation vying for the title of “Best American Seafood Chef.” While Terry White of Florida ultimately left with the crown, for Chef Bart, it was a dream just to compete and showcase the MAC. “It had been a number of years since the state of Missouri had participated,” he explained. Philipps heard about the event a few years back and reached out to the organizers. Earlier this year, 8 F Cherry Diamond F SEPTEMBER 2014

he finally got the call that he had been selected to represent the state in the competition. As winner of the Throw-Down, he received a shipment of fresh Louisiana seafood delivered to the Club. In addition, he walked away with a trophy, a Louisiana gift basket and memories to last a lifetime. “The camaraderie between the chefs was great,” he said. In between competitions, the chefs, among them a James Beard award finalist, a China

Master Chef and numerous restaurant entrepreneurs, had the opportunity to connect with each other and the local New Orleans cuisine. “It was truly an honor to represent the Missouri Athletic Club and the state of Missouri, and I would welcome the opportunity to do it again in the future,” he said. As in previous years, the event was filmed and will air as a PBS special; stay tuned or watch for it in your local listings.

Fall Favorites Return to West Brunch is back! The MAC’s popular Sunday brunch will return to the West Clubhouse on Sept. 21. The a la carte menu, available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Sunday, will feature some of last year’s favorites as well as new items – and of course, the extensive Bloody Mary bar. Make your reservations now by calling 314-539-4490.

Wine of the Month

Mon Blanc & Mon Rouge

This month, the MAC restaurants will feature two wines from the Castello Di Buttrio winery in Friuli, Italy’s premier growing region for white wine. Mon Blanc 2013, or “My White,” is a blend of three varieties indigenous to the region. The aromas are tropical and the flavors are round and full of lush pears, pineapple and a hint of nectarine and spice. Mon Rouge 2012, or “My Red,” is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Refoscoe. The flavors are deep and rich in dark fruits and silky textures and make the perfect pairing for red meats and grilled pork. Enjoy a glass of either selection for $9 or share a bottle for $34.

Serving Our Community Since 1966

Now that school is back in session, the Carside Gourmet to Go will return on Monday, Oct. 6. Watch for the menus in next month’s issue and get your week started off right by picking up a delicious dinner for your family each Monday night. Stay tuned for more great specials, including Wednesday wine classes, a very special seafood event and Saturday date nights.

Cooking for a Cause In late August, MAC Chefs lent their support again to the 23rd Annual Kookin’ for Kids event, benefiting the St. Vincent Home for Children. The Club joined top restaurants from around the area, along with celebrity servers, to help raise more than $100,000 for at-risk youth.

Eat, Drink and Be a Fan at the MAC!

Pre-Game

at the MAC

No one in town is closer to all the Rams football action than the Missouri Athletic Club, located just 200 steps from the Edward Jones Dome (yes, we counted.) So the MAC is the perfect place to eat, drink and be a fan for every Rams home game! Every fan needs to fuel up before the game, and to help, the MAC is offering a pre-game football buffet inside and a tailgate party outside. The pre-game buffet is available for $23.95 per person for noon games and $18.95 for afternoon games. For the Oct. 13 and Dec. 11 night games, the Sportsman’s Club will feature a Prime Rib Buffet for $25.95. Call 314-539-4470 for buffet reservations. Or stop by the MAC tailgate tent to grab a drink, hamburger, brat or more on your way to the game. We’re also excited to team up with KMOX this year for all our tailgates, as well as the popular Kegs & Eggs VIP Experience at select games. (See page 11 for more details on how to snag tickets for this.) 10 F Cherry Diamond F SEPTEMBER 2014

Keep the Fun Going After the Game After-Game Specials: Why sit in traffic after the game? Come celebrate (or commiserate) after each home Rams game with the Game Stop Appetizer Buffet and drinks in the Jack Buck Grille. The buffet is available for just $15 per person, or order off the gameday menu. Overnight Guest Rooms: If you’re entertaining out-of-town guests or just want to make a night of it, don’t forget about the MAC’s convenient Downtown guest rooms and suites. Special rates are available by calling 314-231-7220.

Parking Reminder If you do not have a Rams season parking pass, all gameday parking in the MAC Downtown garage is on a first-come, first-served basis at posted event rates. You may still use the garage on Rams Sundays even if you’re not going to the game; please be sure to follow these steps: F Upon entering the garage, identify yourself as using the Club but not

going to the game. F The parking attendant will ask you to sign a chit, which will have the posted event fee noted, and give you a parking ticket. F You will have until one hour after kickoff to exit the garage and pay the normal hourly rates. If exiting more than one hour after kickoff, the posted event fee will be assessed to your account.

Relaxation AND a Better Golf Game? Yes, Please! When talking about massage therapy, many people focus on the relaxation and stress-relief benefits it can provide. But massage can also be a valuable tool for those dealing with pain from recent or chronic injuries. MAC member Tom Ackerman was complaining about the ache in his shoulder when a golfing buddy suggested he try out the Club’s massage therapy services. “The MAC offers so many different benefits and services that I think, as members, we don’t always take full advantage of them,” Tom says. With his work located less than a mile away, it was convenient for him to make an appointment at the Downtown Clubhouse. After just his first session with Teah Folkerts, one of the

MAC’s licensed massage therapists, he began to see some relief for his tendon issue and he continues to book a session once or twice a month for ongoing maintenance. Research has found that massage can be particularly helpful for golfers, not only to address lingering aches and pains but also to improve flexibility and reduce the chance for future injury. And, just as important for many, Tom reports seeing an improvement in his golf game. Make an appointment today to try out the MAC’s massage therapy services. For Downtown, contact Teah (314-5394431), Jerrad (314-539-4491) or Lauren (314-539-4482 x7949). For West, call 314-539-4433.

The West Clubhouse, in conjunction with the MAC Bike, Swim and Triathlon Club, will host the Sixth Annual MAC Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, Sept. 6. Whether you’re an experienced triathlete or a beginner, all members and guests ages 16+ are encouraged to participate. The event consists of a 300-yard swim, followed by a 12-mile bike ride and 3-mile run. (Visit http:// tinyurl.com/MACTriathlon for full course details.) The transition area will open at 6:30 a.m., and all participants must attend a mandatory safety briefing at 7 a.m. The race will depart from the West Clubhouse at 7:30 a.m., with a full breakfast buffet available afterwards. The cost to participate is $60 for members and $70 for guests. Call 314-539-4433 to register.

Good Sports MAC Offers One of the Most Diverse Junior Athletics Programs in Town The benefits of youth sports are undisputed. Beyond the obvious health and fitness payoff of an active lifestyle, numerous studies have found social, academic and even long-term career benefits for kids who play sports. And with appropriate coaching, the experience can teach children valuable life lessons in teamwork, perseverance and leadership, as well as increasing self-confidence.

35 million kids play organized sports each year.

So why the MAC for your junior athlete? F In recent years, the MAC has gained a reputation for offering one of the best junior tennis programs in the area, with several of its players going on to play at the college level and receive college scholarships. F The Club boasts one of the largest swim and dive programs, and this past summer, helped nearly 300 kids improve their skills in the water. F The Club is home to one of the few junior squash programs in the region, a perfect way for new players to learn the sport. F MAC Pros are not only skilled in their respective sport (many have played at the college and professional level) but also have experience in coaching and teaching young players. F Whether your child plays on a school team, in a competitive league or just wants to pick up an active hobby, the MAC offers a range of programs to meet their goals, all in a fun and supportive atmosphere. 20 F Cherry Diamond F SEPTEMBER 2014

Training & Conditioning The MAC goes beyond sport-specific skills to help all young athletes improve their overall strength and fitness, building the foundation for lifelong health. Studies have shown time and again that children who are physically active, whether through sports or individual fitness, are more likely to stay active into their teen years and adulthood. Both the Downtown and West Clubhouses offer a diverse staff of personal trainers equipped to serve not only adult members but also teens. Speed & Agility Clinics: High school athletes can improve their eye-hand coordination, footwork, lateral speed, explosive movement and rotational strength with weekly clinics at the West Clubhouse. Held at 4:30 p.m. on Tues-

days, these classes cost $15 per session. Personal Training: If your teen uses the fitness facilities, make sure they are working out safely and effectively by setting up a session or ongoing appointment with one of the Club’s certified personal trainers. Or, make fitness a family affair by booking a small-group session. Team Training: Bring your team to the MAC for off-season training, with eight weeks of weekly sessions designed to help young athletes stay fit, improve endurance and performance and reduce the risk of injury. A number of area teams have already taken advantage of this program, and training can be adapted for nearly all sports.

Adolescents who play sports are eight times as likely to be active at age 24 as their counterparts.

Group Lessons, Camps & Clinics Group Lessons & Leagues: Group lessons and clinics are a great way for junior athletes to hone their skills, while meeting new friends and practicing good sportsmanship. Now’s the time to register for 2014-15 Junior Tennis programs, with classes for ages five and up at all skill levels. The MAC’s experienced tennis pros can get your child started off on the right foot with the USTA Quick Start program. This progression-based tennis plan helps adapt the sport for younger players through kidsize racquets, nets and courts, along with specially designed low-pressure tennis balls. Register online through the MAC website, or contact Kenny Powell, Director of Junior Tennis, at 314-539-4403. Camps: The MAC hosts a variety of one-day and weeklong sports camps, held over school breaks. These programs are a great way to introduce a child to a new sport or improve their skills – and best of all, they are fun! The MAC’s 2014 summer camps experienced record turnout, so be sure to mark your calendars for the upcoming Holiday Sports Camp, to be offered daily Dec. 22-24, Dec. 29-31 and Jan. 2. All-day or half-day options are available, making it easy to fit in any schedule.

Girls Club Volleyball Returns This Fall

Private Lessons & Coaching Help your child take their skills to the next level with one-on-one time with an MAC Pro. Private lessons are available in a variety of sports, including F Tennis F Squash F Racquetball F Volleyball F Basketball F Swimming/Diving F Fencing F Self-Defense/Martial Arts In most cases, private coaching can assist with skill development as well as giving kids the mental techniques and strategies to focus and excel in game-time and competitive situations.

In 2013, the MAC hosted tryouts for the first-ever MAC girls club volleyball team. The turnout was so great that the MAC ended up hosting not one but three teams for the 2013-2014 season. Tryouts will be held again this fall for girls ages 8 to 18. Dates are still being finalized and will be announced in the October issue. Also, watch for information on open gyms leading up to the tryouts. For more information, contact Casey Chernin at cchernin@mac-stl.org or 314-602-3001.

The Family that Plays Together MAC Tennis Director Kim Steinmetz and Pro Scott Stutz with the Finnie family

Juggling work, kids’ activities and family time is never easy, but for MAC families like the Finnies, the Club can be a great way to bring everyone together. Dr. John Finnie and his wife Lynn joined the MAC four years ago after an invitation from friends. “We just kept hearing about all the fun things the Club had to offer, and we have definitely found that to be true,” Lynn says. When they initially joined, the Finnie kids – Sean (12), Laura (10), Evan (9) and John Jr. (5) – were taking tennis lessons elsewhere. But after seeing improvement in the Club’s Junior Tennis program, John and Lynn moved the kids over to the MAC. The three oldest now play year-round and participate in both private and group lessons under the coaching of Kenny Powell

and Scott Stutz, and the youngest is beginning Tiny Tots. In the past couple of years, the family has been impressed with the Club’s junior offerings – and the impact it has on their kids’ tennis game. “They really condition the kids well and challenge them,” she says. “The pros expect a lot out of them but they also really know how to make it fun.” The older kids have begun playing in tournaments as part of the High Performance Group, an opportunity that has benefits on and off the court. “They really gain a great deal of self-confidence and mental toughness,” she says. “It helps them learn how to face challenges, and sometimes failure, but not give up.” While the kids play other sports as well, including basketball, tennis has been a big focus for the family. Lynn has participated in adult tennis clinics

and Ladies’ Interclub, and the whole family likes to play together when they have the opportunity. “There’s just so much to choose from,” she says. “It’s great that the MAC offers programs for all skills levels, for both those who want to be more competitive and those who just play for fun.” With John’s work nearby at Mercy Cancer Care, the kids’ school a few minutes away at Oak Hill and a home in the area, the West Clubhouse has become a central hub for the family. When they’re not busy with tennis, they often stop by to dine in the Club’s restaurants, meet up with friends or just play around in the gym on a rainy evening. “We use it so much, and everyone – from the Pro Shop to the restaurant – is so welcoming,” says Lynn. “We just feel really comfortable here.”

Artist of the Month Max R. Scharf

Born in St. Louis and formally trained at Washington University’s School of Fine Art, Max Scharf worked as an Army Artist, technical illustrator and art director before starting his own business in 1963. He was fortunate enough to travel the world during his corporate life, photographing scenes that he would eventually put to canvas. In 1991, he left the corporate world and opened his first fine art loft studio and started his professional fine art career as a landscape painter. In the years following, he was elected as a Signature Member of the National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society, hosted solo exhibitions throughout Missouri and was selected as one of 24 artists to create a painting for the 1994 U.S. Olympic Friendship Games. While he passed away in 2009, his art lives on in private and corporate collections around the world and has been featured in academic, public and private exhibitions. His work was included in the Best of Acrylic Painting and he was designated NOAPS Signature Artist Emeritus in 2003. Squash Pro Heads Back to Australia As many have already heard, MAC Squash Pro Heidi Mather will be leaving the Missouri Athletic Club in early fall to return to her native Australia. She joined the MAC in November 2008, and over the past six years, has helped to strengthen and grow its squash program, particularly for junior players. Heidi herself was the number one junior in Australia and spent several years coaching elite level U.S. juniors in New York. She also continued to compete, finishing out the 2013-14 professional women’s doubles squash tour at the #10 slot. She will be sorely missed, but we thank her for all she has brought to the MAC and wish her the best in her future endeavors, on and off the court. The search process is wrapping up for a new head squash pro, to be announced shortly.

MAC past

There’s no question the MAC has a deep and diverse sports history, from helping members reach their athletic potential to welcoming local and national sports personalities to the Club. Here’s a look back: 10 Years Ago F

The candidates for the 2004 Sports Personality of the Year Award were Rams players Mark Bulger and Torry Holt, Cardinals players Scott Rolen and Jim Edmonds and boxing champ Corey Spinks.

F The Board of Governors unanimously voted to name the West Clubhouse family dining area in honor of Stan the Man. F The MAC played host to the St. Louis Table Tennis Tournament, St. Louis Open Squash Tournament and National Pro Handball Tournament.

25 Years Ago F

16 boys in the Saturday morning Boys Sports Program completed the “Down the Mississippi River” contest, swimming more than 340 lengths within a two-week period.

F The newest addition to the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Storm, was unveiled at a press conference in the Art Lounge. F

Three busloads of MAC members and guests headed to Columbia to watch the Mizzou Tigers take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the second annual road trip.

50 Years Ago F

The MAC became a flurry of fan activity, as the Cardinals faced off against the Yankees in the World Series. Rooms were at a premium, buses shuttled one right after the other to get members to the games and chairs and television sets were put up in the Art Lounge for those not lucky enough to get tickets.

F

Around the same time, fans of the other Cardinals in town – the St. Louis Football Cardinals – gathered for a Kick-off dinner before the annual benefit game.

F Water basketball was making a big come back at the Club, and Ray Flint was named the champ of the 1964 Water Basketball Shooting Contest by completing the 101 basket circuit an amazing 35 times. Cherry Diamond F SEPTEMBER 2014 F 27

On the Road Again with the Forever Young Club The Forever Young Club (FYC) finds a myriad of ways to have fun while learning. This time it was an Aug. 7 trip by 41 members to Warm Springs Ranch near Boonville, Mo. The ranch is dedicated to breeding and training Clydesdale horses for the famous hitches that pull the AB Budweiser wagons in parades across the U.S. More than 100 two-ton Clydesdales reside at the ranch, many of which are geldings retired from parade service. The focus of our visit was on the breeding program and seeing the foals born since early spring. In addition, we learned about Clydesdale medical and birthing care. The manager of the ranch personally attends every birth to make sure mother and the 150-pound foal fare well. News to FYC members was the fact that a Clydesdale mare gives birth in five to 35 minutes from onset of labor. We saw two contented foals residing in roomy stalls with their moms. At nearly 200 pounds, baby Jessica was a month old and cute as could be! Budweiser Clydesdales are bred to 30 F Cherry Diamond F SEPTEMBER 2014

achieve four white stockings and a white blaze on their faces, and the males are tested for an unruffled manner. Those who pass the tests are trained for service on team hitches for pulling the big beer wagons. Special vans carry the Clydesdales over the road for every performance. Fresh air is assured by windows in the vans, but there is no heat or air-conditioning, as our guide explained that horses are outside creatures and have to be ready to pull a wagon in a variety of climates. Most of the working Clydesdales spend the day outdoors and return to the barn at night. And yes, parts of the famous Budweiser commercials are taped at Warm Springs Ranch. After lunch at a local winery, our luxury coach ride back to the MAC was a chance to talk about the excitement of the day. Visitors are always welcome at FYC luncheons on the third Friday of the month at the West Clubhouse and on our trips. For more information, contact FYC President Joe Hoffman or Travel Chair Judith Hanses.

Upcoming FYC Events Postcards from the Fair Friday, Sept. 19 Elizabeth Pickard, Director of Interpretive Programs for the Missouri History Museum, will share stories and history from the 1904 World’s Fair at the monthly FYC meeting. The meeting begins at 11:30 a.m. at the West Clubhouse; call 314-539-4490 for reservations. An Autumn Evening at West Saturday, Sept. 20 There’s still time to make reservations for the next FYC Travel Theme Dinner, featuring a taste of fall. A reception begins at 6:15 p.m., followed by a three-course dinner at 7 p.m., including autumn salad, filet mignon with cabernet sauvignon sauce, broccoli rabe, coined potatoes and dessert. The cost to attend is $40 per person; call 314-539-4490 to reserve your spot for this elegant evening of dining and entertainment.
