from the president The Missouri Athletic Club starts the 2018/2019 fiscal year in September, but as I write this column, the Club is on track to have a historic 2017/2018 fiscal year. Last year was the best fiscal year in the Club’s history, which prompted senior management, with Board approval, to set aggressive goals for this fiscal year. The year got off to a slow start, but recent months have been strong for the key areas of catering, hotel, and membership. If the trend continues in these areas, we could experience the best fiscal year in the Club’s history. We are not, however, without challenges especially downtown with the loss of the Rams, various conventions and Blues/Cardinals playoffs, which have all negatively impacted hotel rooms, garage and food and beverage revenue. To help the Club achieve its financial goals, you are encouraged to recruit and engage new members, host meetings and events at the Club, and utilize the overnight guest rooms for business or pleasure. I mentioned new member engagement because the most frequent reason for member resignations is non-use. The more quickly and firmly we engage new members, the more they will use the Club and be less likely to resign from non-use. Whenever you have an opportunity, ask a new member to join you for a Club event or invite them to join one of the Clubs Within the Club. Following a refresh of the MAC’s website in early June, the Club launched a new mobile application on July 23 to continue to improve member’s digital experience. Previously, the MAC only had a mobile site, which required members to repeatedly login to use its services. Those frustrations were heard. Now, once a member has downloaded

and installed the app, he or she will not need to perform another login. Also, since the app is specifically designed for mobile devices, it’s easier to navigate in this format, and still provides access to online registration for events, clinics, programs, court bookings, and statements. Another featured benefit of the app is its ability to send push notifications. I have been assured the Club will not constantly ping members with notifications but will use this feature to send timely information and special Club promotions. For example, in addition to promoting these benefits, during the launch week, the Club provided incentives to download the app such as a daily push notification for a special complimentary drink that aligned with the theme for the day (i.e. Wine Wednesday). Lastly, members who have their location services turned on within the app can also receive special promotional notifications when on the Club’s premises such as a notification for a Pro Shop sale when passing by the Pro Shop. This service will also negate the need for members to sign in at Club entrances as their presence will be electronically logged. The Club will continue to send members special offers through push notifications, and is also considering doing another promotional campaign for the app. Following the launch week, more than 700 members and spouses had downloaded the app, which was great for week one. However, the goal is to get a majority of us to download the app. In addition to the many benefits the app provides to members, it is a great marketing, communication, security and retention tool for staff. The MAC now has a better way of knowing who is entering the Club, and

the Membership Department can use this information to better measure engagement and usage of the Club. However, these benefits only exist if members download the app so please take the time to do so. Find instructions on the MAC’s website and page 30 of this magazine or contact webmaster@mac‐stl.org, and staff will assist you. The West Clubhouse construction for Phase 1A and 1B is on schedule and on budget. Now that a final racquetball court count has been determined, the architect is working on the drawings for Phase 2, which we will share once they are completed. The drawings will help us estimate the cost, the feasibility to incur the cost, and perhaps develop a Phase 2 capital campaign, which will not include a mandatory member assessment. In my next column, I look forward to sharing with you some of the takeaways from the next meeting of past presidents, which I will hold on August 22, after this magazine goes to print. Finally, I want to thank those members who supported the Club during Foundations’ Month in August by joining the All-Star team of monthly givers and participating in the annual golf tournament as a player or sponsor. Our three foundations along with the Charitable Society for Children put the money to good use. If you have not signed up for a monthly charitable contribution, please consider doing so.

G. Keith Phoenix, President Missouri Athletic Club

To help the Club achieve its goals, you are encouraged to recruit and engage new members, host meetings and events at the Club, and utilize the overnight guest rooms for business or pleasure.

from the general manager Our budgets for the 2019 fiscal year, which begins September 1, were just Boardapproved at our meeting last Thursday. Hours of work are poured into this process. My hat is off to our entire team, but a special shout out goes to Pam Roth our Director of Accounting. The detail and depth Pam dives down into with our staff is amazing. As one of our Past Presidents used to say, “there’s not a dime out of line.” Our process has really evolved, and it’s so rewarding to see our entire team, with such a thorough understanding of their areas, all focused on the future. I think some of our members forget that we are a $22 million enterprise consisting of multiple businesses working simultaneously with 400 employees. Granted it’s your Club, but it’s also a big busy place with lots of moving parts that we wrestle with every day, hopefully to your delight and satisfaction. Our planning cycle, which consists of the four A’s (Agenda setting, Allocating the resources, Activating the work, and Accounting for the results), is in full swing. As part of this process, our Planning Committee will work with us next month as we update the strategic plan documents to reflect the road ahead. This plan will be published again this year for all to review, and of course, we welcome all input as we go. A huge part of our agenda for the 2019 fiscal year centers, once again, on capital improvements. The West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project now underway remains a top priority. The budget is weighted heavily in its favor to carry Phase Two of the project to completion. As a reminder, Phase 1A and 1B, which was budgeted at $528,200, will be paid for entirely through the capital budget and Club-generated cash flow. The initial estimate for Phase Two was $2,215,800; making the combined budgeted project cost approximately $2.8 million. The good news is our design-build approach has provided us with significant cost-savings during Phase One construction and through our discovery on Phase Two.

The plans for Phase Two are about 85% complete, and we’re now estimating that the combined total cost for both phases of the project will be closer to $2.2 million. Keep in mind, this doesn’t mean that we’re cutting down or cutting back the project quality in any way. It simply means that we’re able to provide a state-of-the-art, cutting-edge fitness experience for less than originally projected. This is great news and great work by all. The Board appointed a task force of smart folks to work on solutions to a very manageable funding shortfall we now project in 2022 because of Phase Two. There are a number of ideas flowing, but rest assured a member assessment is not a consideration. Thinking about improved experiences, I’m particularly excited about the yoga and barre studio, which will open this calendar year as part of Phase One. Brenda Jones, our interior designer, is formulating aesthetic ideas that have some of the most reputable yoga instructors in St. Louis clamoring to come work with us. Additionally, the studio will have its own HVAC unit, which will allow us to control its temperature separate from the rest of the facility. We’ll be able to crank it up for warm and hot yoga and then cool the space back down quickly for the next class. It’s going to be awesome. Other exciting clubhouse improvements are on the agenda for the new fiscal year. Over Labor Day weekend, the Downtown Clubhouse’s pool and pool deck will receive a facelift thanks to Mr. Bill Willert. Mr. Willert was asking about our foundations and how he could better support the Club. As an avid swimmer, we found an area that aligned with his interests and put a much-needed plan together to accommodate. We sincerely appreciate Mr. Willert’s generosity and look forward to sharing more of his story in an upcoming Cherry Diamond—his grandfather was a charter member of the MAC! And, Past Governor Gary Sextro’s company will be doing the facelift for us. We anticipate that the project will take about two weeks. Also, towards the end of October, the Downtown Clubhouse’s weight room on the

fifth floor will receive a total refresh and all new circuit equipment. We anticipate that this project will be completed in early November, and it is way, way overdue. Reach out to any of our amazing, certified personal trainers with questions about how to best use the new equipment, and they’ll ensure you’re working those muscles appropriately. Then, in mid-November, the Club’s maintenance team will work on updating the last block of 11 hotel rooms on the 8th floor of the Downtown Clubhouse. Once these renovations are complete in early February, all the hotel rooms on the 7th and 8th floors will have been renovated, which will bring us to 52 renovated rooms. Upgrades to the 9th floor are penciled into the capital plan for 2020, and the 10th floor is scheduled for 2021. Earmarked as one of our last big projects this fiscal year is the refresh of the Jack Buck Grille, which needs new carpet, furniture, and general love and clean up. This project is still in the early planning phases, but look for activity to begin in August 2019. As you can see, the agenda is set; we’ve allocated the resources, and we’re excited to activate the work. You play a big role in our success and contribute by keeping our key bucket areas (membership, catering, and hotel rooms) always top of mind. Coming off Foundations’ Month, I want to thank all of you who support the Club through our All-Star program, our sponsorships, and your donations. Also, a big shout out to all of you who recruit new members, host events at the Club, and utilize our overnight guest rooms. Your contributions and usage of the Club have put us on track to achieve our best fiscal year on record allowing us to set these types of agendas in the coming the years. Cheers! See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

30 YEARS MAC Past: CELEBRATING OF MEMBERSHIP FOR WOMEN! The MAC has evolved in many ways since its inception in 1903. One of the most notable and progressive changes took place 30 years ago this month when the all-male membership voted to allow women to become members. In the summer of 1988, the Board of Governors met multiple times to discuss membership policies and opening the doors to women. By late August, the Board decided to put female membership on the ballot for early September. The amendment of Article II of the MAC’s By-Laws, to allow women to become members, passed with a 77 percent majority vote. The vote count was certified by the Board of Governors in September of 1988, and the decision was then incorporated in the MAC’s By-Laws.

The first female resident member was approved in December of 1988, and by early 1989, more females became resident members including Susan T. Wienstroer, Sandra W. Gricius, Karen P. Wildhelm, and Carol Pernsteiner. These women paved the way for today’s growing female membership. Today, the MAC continuously strives to further engage female members and spouses. One avenue is through its Women’s Initiative Group, which focuses on recruitment and engagement opportunities for female members by providing fitness, social, professional and philanthropic engagements to support the Club’s vision. Contact the Membership Department (membership@ mac-stl.org) for more information or to get involved.

Matt Scoggins Wins GECC Golf Tournament

Matt Scoggins was among the first 25 MAC members to join Glen Echo Country Club’s Full Membership Program in April. Since then, he has utilized their golf course and facilities a great deal. During the week, he hits the golf range after work, and on weekends, he plays 18 to 36 holes. He also enjoys having lunch on the patio or relaxing by the pool. “I really enjoy playing in the [golf] tournaments Glen Echo puts on such as The Invitational, Member-Member, or even the monthly games,” said Scoggins. On the weekend of July 20, Glen Echo hosted The Invitational, which is a member/ guest golf tournament. This tournament was well-attended with 54 two-man teams that consisted of nine flights of six teams. After group play, each flight winner and one wild card team competed in a shootout that consisted of ten teams. Matt Scoggins and his friend and guest, Noah Nohren, won the tournament. The two celebrated their victory with a jacket ceremony, dinner, and champagne with friends. The tournament “was a great way to meet other members of the Club” and that the “staff at Glen Echo put on a great event,” explained Scoggins. He continued to rave about the shape of the course and the hospitality that he received. This member-guest tournament is one of many, but this one “topped them all,” according to Scoggins. When asked why he decided to join Glen Echo’s Full Membership Program, Scoggins explained, “I played [golf] at Glen Echo multiple times through the reciprocal program with the MAC,” he says, “I really enjoyed the course.” Once the opportunity to join the Full Membership Program presented itself, he knew that joining was a no-brainer.

Currently, 47 MAC members are participating in the program, and a few spots remain. Welcome New Squash Assistant

MAT T JENSON In July, the Club hired Matt Jenson as Assistant Squash Professional. Matt is originally from Adelaide, Australia but has been living in the United States for the past 18 years. Matt has a degree in sports administration, marketing and management and is a member of The Australian Institute of Sport. In addition, Matt boasts more than 20 years of professional squash experience from touring professionally and working as a program director within multiple squash clubs. As a professional, Matt is excited to help both adults and juniors develop their game and heighten their overall squash experience. He is looking forward to building a great team atmosphere, not only on the squash courts, but within the MAC as a whole. In his free time, Matt enjoys playing golf and spending time with his family. The MAC is thrilled to have him as the newest member of the team. Give Matt a warm welcome.

A SQUASH TIP SAMPLER BASIC TIPS 1. Get on court with one of the MAC’s pros or a knowledgeable member to learn the basics and rules. 2. Learn different shots and basic tactics. 3. Play and practice with other players who are on the same skill level. 4. Go solo. Solo practice is a great way to improve shots and get into the technical side of the game. 5. Play against as many different players as possible. This improves agility and the ability to think fast in a variety of situations.

SPECIFIC TIPS 1. Preparation is key. Always have a racket ready. 2. Watch the ball (even if it’s behind you); watch your opponent and read their body position. 3. Recover! Travel back to the T after every shot. 4. Practice target focus, and ask these questions: Where are you aiming the ball? Why are you hitting it there? 5. Structure points and set up the point to put yourself in a winning position. 6. Volley the ball early. This takes time away from your opponent and makes it easier to control the T.

FOUR MORE YEARS MAC to Honor College Basketball’s Best

FROM LEFT: THE OSCAR ROBERTSON AWARD; JALEN BRUNSON; TRAE YOUNG

Last spring, just one week after the NCAA Basketball Final Four, the best in the sport gathered at the MAC for the College Basketball Awards. Fresh from leading his team to the national championship, Villanova’s Jalen Brunson received the Oscar Robertson Award as the Player of the Year. Oklahoma’s Trae Young was honored as the Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year and Virginia’s Tony Bennett received the Henry Iba Coach of the Year Award. Hosting the awards banquet enhanced the Club’s tradition of celebrating athletic excellence. The MAC membership responded

enthusiastically with an outpouring of support. Sponsors stepped up, and the banquet sold out several weeks prior to the event. Backed by a strong showing, the MAC continuing to be the home of the College Basketball Awards was a slam dunk. The U.S. Basketball Writers Association and the MAC have extended a partnership to host the event for the next four years. The banquet will be held each April on the Monday following the NCAA Championship game. Lumiere Place Casino and Hotels will return as the title sponsor.

What is Regenerative Medicine? Regenerative medicine is an exciting field that focuses on therapies that use your body’s own cells to repair, restore, and regenerate damaged tissues. This is a great option as some spine and orthopaedic interventions have a limited lifespan. Such therapies include the use of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and stem cells. With the use of ultrasound or fluoroscopy

(x-ray) guided, minimally invasive techniques, we can target various joints, bursae, ligaments, and muscles. PRP is derived from the patient’s whole blood and spun in a centrifuge that separates it into three layers: platelet-poor plasma, platelet-rich plasma, and red blood cells. The platelet-rich plasma layer is then extracted and injected into the site of tissue damage. Stem cells are biological cells that can differentiate into other types of cells. Adult stem cells can be found in the bone marrow and in adipose (fat) tissue. Again, these can be obtained from the patient’s own supply to be used therapeutically.

In reality, both PRP and stem cells do not replace the tissues per se, but when injected, they release a plethora of growth factors that accelerate the healing process in the injured area. The amazing thing is that this therapy is autologous (obtained from yourself) to help heal yourself. This may be a great option prior to invasive surgeries. PRP and stem cells are not a panacea for all issues. You must be evaluated by your physician to discuss risk/benefits and to see if you are an appropriate candidate. Please see us in Des Peres for an evaluation to see if you qualify for PRP or stem cell therapy! Three Convenient Locations Des Peres St. Peters Washington

Book a Session with a MAC Personal Trainer Is a lack of motivation a struggle at the gym? A personal trainer may be the answer! Working out solo is tough, but having a professional for encouragement can make all the difference. With a trainer, members can receive faster and better results due to exercises that help lose fat and gain muscle. Other benefits of personal training include reduced chance of injury, establishment of a lifetime habit of exercising, and overcoming plateaus. The Missouri Athletic Club offers an amazing array of personal trainers at both clubhouses that are eager to help members reach their fitness goals! The MAC offers both individual and group training so gather up to four friends and work out together.

NUTRITION tip

Low-carb or no-carb diets are popular ways to lose weight. However, carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy. Keep in mind that low-carb diets help shed water weight. Incorporate carbs into your diet and stick to veggies and fruits as the main source. Remember, starchy carbs in moderation are not a detriment to a diet plan. 14 F Cherry Diamond F SEPT 2018

Massage not only relieves aches and tension in the body, but it can also help relieve stress. Feel refreshed after only one session with a massage therapist. The MAC offers more than ten different types of massages at both clubhouses. Read further for a highlight on three. F Swedish massage is a soothing massage for both mind and body that uses kneading and gliding strokes. It promotes stress and tension relief, increased circulation, as well as fullbody relaxation. F Deep Tissue massage uses specialized techniques that allow the therapist to reach the deep layers of muscle. Deep tissue focuses on key problem areas, aches, pains, and muscle tightness. It helps promote increased muscle function, range of motion, and pain relief. F Myofascial Cupping utilizes “reverse pressure” by placing silicone massage cups on the client and initiating suction. Cupping increases localized circulation, stretches connective tissue, and moves lymphatic fluids. Clients experiencing pain, limited range of motion, or needing to improve soft tissue recovery will benefit from cupping. These are just three of the amazing massage options offered at the MAC. For more information and a full list of massage offerings, visit the Fitness & Wellness page of the MAC website. Book a session today!

S

ix years ago, at the age of 16, I began working at the Missouri Athletic Club as a summer camp counselor. My dad was a long-time member, but at the time, I did not feel much of a connection to the Club. It was just a place to work during the summer. I quickly began to form some great friendships and enjoyed returning to work at Camp MAC for several more summers. It was not until my dad began to share stories of my grandfather and great-grandfather that I began to fully appreciate what an integral role the MAC has played in my family’s story for more than a century. In some ways, the MAC I grew up in was much different than the one my grandfather and great-grandfather grew up in. There was no West Clubhouse or female members when they joined. But in many ways, the characteristics that make the MAC so unique have endured. I have come to appreciate that we have a shared experience. This is the place where we have fostered meaningful relationships with family, friends and colleagues. Not long after the Club’s inception, my great-grandfather, Frank J. Guyol, became the first member in the Guyol family line to join the MAC in the 1910s. Stories depict him as a businessman who particularly enjoyed dining at the Club. During the week, he enjoyed lunch and drinks with friends at the historic industry-specific Gas 16 F Cherry Diamond F SEPT 2018

and Oil Table in the MAC’s dining room. Despite being the owner of Ronnoco Coffee Company, the camaraderie at the table superseded any industry ties. Since drinking during lunch was commonplace at that time, he would order his signature drink, now dubbed the Grandpa Special. It consisted of Bonded 100 Proof Kentucky Tavern on the rocks with a splash of club soda. The final and most important touch was a very specific counter-clockwise twist of lemon rind; clockwise was undrinkable! Of course, the MAC’s bartenders were happy to accommodate. After lunch, he would venture to the tenth floor for a nap in the Snooze Room; the location for one of my favorite stories. Following in my great-grandfather’s footsteps, my grandfather, William B. Guyol, worked in the family business and joined the MAC in the 1940s. One afternoon, he snuck away from work to enjoy a nap in the Snooze Room. Upon entering the room, he realized that his father and boss was already in there snoozing! To avoid getting caught, my grandpa swiftly exited the room and went back to work. My great-grandfather never found out! My family has decades of great stories and fond memories at the Club. My grandpa, Bill, fondly remembers using the Club’s athletic facilities, playing squash with friends, and hosting the annual Guyol

family Thanksgiving in one of the Club’s private rooms on the third floor. The Club’s culture of camaraderie and fellowship makes it an ideal place to gather with family and friends for any occasion. This sentiment was passed down to my father, Mark Guyol, along with the family membership. He grew up at the Club and attended Saturday morning Boy’s Classes with his brother Bill Guyol, Jr. in the 1960s. They played recreational sports such as basketball and volleyball while my grandfather conducted business at the Club. As he grew older, my dad squeezed squash matches at the Club in between graduate school classes. In 1984, my dad applied for membership, and my grandpa gifted him with the initiation fee. Since then, my dad has carried on the Guyol family legacy of using the Club for business, family, athletic endeavors, and making memories. My dad remembers taking my brother to Dad and Lad classes such as Judo with Mr. Shin, and I remember my dad taking me to meet Mia Hamm at the Hermann Trophy Awards Banquet. Today, you can find him with friends and family enjoying drinks in the 1903 bar or Jack Buck Grille, playing paddle tennis on the rooftop, or on the elliptical in the fitness center at the Downtown Clubhouse. At family dinners, my dad and grandpa reminisce and talk about how the Club has changed over the years, but a few things remain consistent: the delicious caramel rolls, the rich history and old-world smell in the Downtown Clubhouse lobby, the culture of camaraderie, the desire to do business with other members, and the ambiance for making memories with family and friends. My family is fortunate to have been part of this history for more than a century. When the times comes, I hope the legacy continues into the fourth generation.

JOIN HANDS ESL

Join Hands ESL is a wonderful organization that serves its community in hopes to end poverty for all children in the East St. Louis area. Through their compassion and service, this organization continues to empower the people of East St. Louis. Join Hands ESL sees the beauty and potential in every individual they encounter, and they work hard to help in time of need. They are experts in building personal relationships with both children and families through two main programs: Youth Programming and Mentoring Programs, both administered at the Ubuntu Center for Peace. Join Hands ESL, though small, has larger-than-life aspirations for its community. Youth programming provides various activities that challenge and entertain the children to temporarily take them out of their often harsh-living environment. Their activities are volunteer-driven, and they act as “big sisters” or “big brothers.” They create friendships and encourage the children’s selfimage and self-esteem. The main goal of youth programming is to let children know that they are loved and that they have huge a potential for the future. Other programs that Join Hands ESL offers is the Family Mentoring Program and the Teen Mentoring Program. The Family Mentoring Program offers friendship to and mentors parents for the sake of their children’s success. The Teen Mentoring Program is focused on increased academic achievements, employment skills, and an attainment of both high school and college graduation. Commemoration

Join the MAC and St. Louis Rotary Club for the annual Veterans Day commemoration and honor all those who have served our country, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Lunch and the program will follow a reception with military exhibits.

“The Missouri Athletic Club and the Rotary Club of St. Louis sponsor the Veterans Day Commemoration and awards luncheon that annually honors all veterans and provides special recognition to a Veteran of the Year, Veteran of Achievement, and a Lifetime Award for Dedication to the Veteran Community. The POW/MIA ceremony and the stirring speeches from key military leaders provide a solemn and emotional backdrop honoring and thanking our veteran community for their service and sacrifice. For me, it is a day to remember past missions, exploits, and comrades as we went about the nation’s business because the veterans’ courage, professionalism, and commitment serve as a rallying cry for future generations and inspires us to renew our patriotic spirit. It is a day when I rededicate myself to assisting the veteran community because we, as senior leaders, never really stop serving.” — MAC Governor Tracy Beckette Brigadier General (R), AUS Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army (CASA), Missouri (East)

A HAPPENIN’ HAWAIIAN NIGHT

The West Clubhouse pool deck was transformed into a Hawaiian paradise on July 28 as the Associates hosted a luau pool party for the membership. Those who donated $25 to the Club’s foundations received a special pineapple cup for bottomless Mai Tais! “Grandma’s Basement Band” set the night to music and the pool was open to those wanting to take a little dip. GO MOBILE with the MAC! Join the bandwagon of about 800 members and spouses who downloaded the MAC’s new app.

The Missouri Athletic Club’s new mobile app officially launched on July 23. During the initial launch week, more than 700 members and spouses downloaded the app and received a daily push notification for a complimentary drink. The launch campaign ended with a complimentary Mai Tai for those who had the app downloaded at the Luau Pool Party on Saturday. Since then, about 800 members and spouses have downloaded the MAC’s new mobile app, and the feedback has been great. These members are benefiting from easier mobile navigation and access to online registration, bookings, and statements. For those who have turned on their location services, they no longer need to sign-in at Club entrances. They are also receiving ongoing push notifications for special Club promotions, such as the complimentary drinks, and timely information. The Club plans to periodically share special offers solely through the app. Those who have not downloaded it already are encouraged to do so to reap these benefits. Lastly, members only need to login to the app once during the initial installation by following these easy steps:
