from the president “Can you do me a favor?” How many times have you heard that question? It is usually followed by, “Will you take me to the airport?” or “Can you help us move into the 10th floor apartment with no elevator?” or “Will you dress up like Little Bo-Peep for the school play?” Such requests don’t always have to be difficult, especially, when those favors are about the MAC. “Can you do me a favor and sign me up for the new fitness class at the Downtown Clubhouse?” or “Can you do me a favor and sign me up for that awesome Portuguese Wine Dinner?” Let me show you how easy it is. Can you do me a favor and … F Help me congratulate Governor Keith Phoenix who was recently elected to be our 103rd President. President-Elect Phoenix has been a tremendous asset leading our Finance Committee this past year. His leadership will reinforce and expand the continued success of the Club. Further congratulations are in order for the rest of our future officers: First Vice-President Aaron Pawlitz, Second Vice-President Matt Morris, Secretary Andrew Carter, and Treasurer David Smith. We are in good hands! F Sing the praises of our 2018 MAC Philanthropist of the Year, KIM TUCCI. This long-time member has been a significant catalyst in furthering the legacy of the MAC. There is not enough space to write about his leadership as a past MAC president, co-founder of the MAC Preservation Foundation, a cheerleader for the entire region, and a tireless supporter of the Club. F Register for the President’s Foundations’ Ball, which will take place April 7, 2018. Not only will this be a great opportunity to recognize

and thank KIM TUCCI for all his dedication, but it will be a celebration of the past year at the MAC. Please join us for a night of food, music, camaraderie, dancing, and ALL-OUT FUN. F Spread the news about the MAC’s continued reinvestment in our fitness facilities. Our middle name is “Athletic,” and we continue to show it with our new multi-purpose training rooms and programs at the Downtown Clubhouse. Soon you will enjoy similar improvements at the West Clubhouse where the Board has recently approved moving forward on a phased project that will upgrade our weight room (Phase 1) and cardio areas (Phase 2), create specialty training rooms (Phase 2), and expand our offering of services. The stadium racquetball court will be repurposed for expanding the weight room. The Board and numerous Committees who worked with our outside consultants believe these plans will help maintain our level of “athletic” excellence. More importantly, this project is a direct response to the feedback we received from our current and prospective members. In his letter this month, our CEO, Wally Smith outlines the comprehensive approach that we took to plan for this project. More info and pictures will be shared over the next month. F Buy a ticket, a table or even be a sponsor for the United States Basketball Writers Association’s (USBWA) Annual College Basketball Awards banquet that will be hosted by the MAC on April 9, 2018. At this banquet, the Oscar Robertson Award (best player), the Wayman

Tisdale Award (best freshman) and the Henry Iba Award (best coach) will be presented. Just like our Hermann Trophy Award event, the MAC will be on the national stage. No other club in America distributes this many national awards. Special thanks to Governor Cantwell and his committee for planning this event.

F Applaud our Women of Distinction honorees. Laura Holt, Stephanie Hosler, Tanya Quinn, Kathy Rehmer, Stacy Taubman, Donna Vandiver and Misty Farr have been shining stars and role models within our community. Attend the award luncheon on April 13, and help us recognize these incredible women. Thank you so much to Angie Minges and her committee for expanding the MAC’s role in recognizing the achievements of women. F Think about serving on one of our Committees or even consider running for the Board of Governors. If you have any interest, please contact one of the current Governors or myself. I can’t imagine any of those requests for favors are too difficult for you. There continues to be many opportunities for you, you and your spouse, you and your friends, you and your family, you and your co-workers, you and your business partners … YOU get it. Do me a favor and have some FUN at the MAC. You deserve it.

from the general manager As with many things in life, putting in the hard work upfront often paves the way for a smooth ride down the road. Right now, our strategic planning process is functioning the way that it should – like a well-oiled machine. And that is a very good feeling. To recap, during the 2016-17 fiscal year, the Board of Governors had a goal to develop a process, not simply a plan. Plans tend to get put on a shelf and left unattended or never get off the ground because of changes in leadership and vision. By developing a process to support the plan, the Board helped ensure that the plan would have life. As a living document, it is subject to be reviewed and updated annually within the parameters of the process. The planning process consists of the four A’s: agenda setting, allocating resources, activating the work, and accounting for results. Most recently, the Planning Committee reviewed the results of the member survey and used that feedback from the membership to develop a strategic plan that was approved by the Board of Governors. The survey results emphasized a need to expand the MAC’s fitness and athletic offerings. As a result, a plan was made to renovate two spaces at the Downtown Clubhouse. Once the agenda was set, the resources were allocated, the work was activated, and we’re accounting for the results with an influx of happy members using the space. This is so rewarding to see, but there is still much more work to be done. A need for a fitness expansion

and renovation also exists at the West Clubhouse. Numerous committees and task forces have been doing their due diligence to present a sound plan to the Board of Governors. After months of meetings, the Board of Governors approved moving forward with the masterplan that includes Phase 1A, Phase 1B, and Phase 2. There is a commitment to the full project. Work will begin on Phases 1A and subsequently 1B in April, contingent on having the proper permits. The cost of Phase 1A and 1B of the project is estimated at $528,000, which will be funded using capital dollars. Phase 1 will address the weight room. While work on Phase 1A and 1B is underway, the Planning and Finance Committees will work together to finalize alternative funding and sources for Phase 2, which is estimated to cost $2.2 million. Stay tuned for a possible capital campaign. Phase 2 will incorporate the studio spaces for yoga, Pilates, spinning, etc. and include three or five racquetball courts. An ongoing racquetball study is being conducted in conjunction with the players to determine the best court solution. The Board of Governors will approve the final plan for funding Phase 2. It’s so satisfying to see the plans that were put on the agenda in 2017 come to fruition in 2018, and know that our plans in 2018 will actualize in 2019. I’m looking forward to sharing more visuals of this project with you in April. We’ll celebrate the launch of this project along with some

of the MAC’s greatest supporters at the President’s Foundations’ Ball on April 7. These awesome plans for the future would not be possible without your philanthropic nature ingrained in the culture of this Club. Many years ago, members Kim Tucci, Gerry Ortbals, and Don Gunn started the MAC’s Preservation Foundation. Since then, it has raised approximately $1.8 million to preserve and rejuvenate our historic Downtown Clubhouse. Giving to the Preservation Foundation, supports the Downtown Clubhouse and frees up money in the capital budget to be used towards other projects such as the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project. Giving to the foundations supports the Club’s values of tradition, community and culture, and I can’t wait to celebrate our All-Star and planned givers, sponsors and donors who help make this possible. I don’t want to wait until April to extend my thanks to those who help pave the smooth road ahead: The Board of Governors who support our planning process and the members who give to our foundations. Thank you for being among the MAC’s greatest supporters! See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

It’s so satisfying to see the plans that were put on the agenda in 2017 come to fruition in 2018, and know that our plans in 2018 will actualize in 2019.

10 THINGS TO KNOW About the President 's Foundations' Ball

Saturday, April 7, 2018 | Register to attend online or call 314-539-4470.

In lieu of the Gala, this year the Missouri Athletic Club is hosting the President’s Foundations’ Ball on Saturday, April 7. For those wondering what this event entails and how if differs from the Gala, here are ten things to know. 1. GALA VS. BALL

Every year, the Missouri Athletic Club wants to celebrate its foundations and supporters. Last year, the Club hosted its Foundations’ Gala, which was a fundraising event with live and silent auctions. This year, the Club will host the President’s Foundations’ Ball, which is an appreciation event focused on honoring and thanking supporters.

2. PRESIDENTS AND BOARD OF GOVERNORS

The President’s Foundations’ Ball is held in April, shortly before the Board of Governors’ officers transition and the installation of the new incoming Board of Governors class in May. This event is an opportunity to recognize and thank the incoming and outgoing Board, especially the Presidents, for their service to the Club.

3. FOUNDATIONS’ ALL-STARS

At this appreciation event, the Club wants to recognize All-Star members who give a monthly donation to MAC’s foundations as well as those who support the foundations through planned gifts, sponsorships and donations. One way these members are being thanked is through a reduced admission price.

4. PHILANTHROPIST OF THE YEAR

The Club annually recognizes one member who gives of time, talent and treasure in the St. Louis community and at the MAC. This award was first given to Sam Hopmeier in 2017 for his work with MAC’s Charitable Society for Children. This year, the MAC will honor Past President Kim Tucci for his work in spearheading the Preservation Foundation.

5. WEST CLUBHOUSE FITNESS EXPANSION AND RENOVATION LAUNCH

The results of the MAC’s member survey highlighted the importance of the Club’s fitness and athletic offerings to members. Since then, the MAC has renovated two spaces at the Downtown Clubhouse and has been doing its due diligence to develop a sound project for the West Clubhouse. At this celebratory event, the Club plans to formally launch the highly-anticipated West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project.

6. ADMISSION PRICE

As a gesture of appreciation, those who support the MAC’s foundations as All-Star givers, planned givers and sponsors will receive a reduced admission price. Become a foundations’ supporter by contacting Cynthia Goudy (cgroudy@mac-stl.org) before March 30 to receive the reduced admission price: F $50 per person for Associate All-Star members F $75 per person for foundations’ supporters F $125 per person for members and guests Garage parking included

7. PROGRAM

Here’s what to expect the night of the event: The evening will begin with a reception in the Art Lounge starting at 6 p.m. followed by a formal plated dinner served to tables of ten in the Missouri Room at 7:30 p.m. Dinner will conclude with a brief program around 8:30 p.m. extending appreciation to the incoming and outgoing Presidents and Board members, foundations’ supporters, and the Philanthropist of the Year and formally launching the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project. Then, by 9 p.m., the dance floor will open and a live band will perform for the remainder of the evening. Complimentary cocktails will be served all night. Make hotel room reservations early.

8. ENTERTAINMENT

As a special treat, The Downtown Band from Nashville will perform live at the event. They have a reputation as one of the best live bands in the country. They have performed at many high-profile events such as inaugural balls and for celebrities such as Elton John, David Letterman, Kevin Costner, Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts.

9. DRESS CODE

Dress to impress! This is a black tie optional event, but formalwear is encouraged.

10. ENTER TO WIN

Unlike the Gala, there will not be a live or silent auction at this event. However, members will have an opportunity to win a valued item by purchasing tickets for a raffle drawing. Stay tuned for more information about the grand prize!

Don’t miss out on this celebration of the MAC’s greatest supporters! Register to attend online from the Club Events Calendar or by calling 314-539-4470. To become a foundations’ supporter, contact Cynthia Goudy at 314-797-5474 or cgroudy@mac-stl.org. 8 F Cherry Diamond F MAR 2018

The MAC has a tradition of supporting athletic excellence, which started at the inception of the Club when its athletes and officials were preparing to participate in the Olympic Games. Today, the MAC is established as a destination for premier sports awards banquets. The Jack Buck Awards annually honors the top sports figures in St. Louis and the Hermann Trophy is presented at the Club to the top male and female collegiate soccer players in the country. Now, the MAC will be home to another signature national sports event. On Feb. 6, the Missouri Athletic Club hosted a press conference to announce that it has teamed up with the United States Basketball Writers Association to host the College Basketball Awards dinner on April 9 at the Downtown Clubhouse. Just one week after the NCAA college basketball championship game, the top players and coach for the 2018 season will be honored at the MAC. The event will feature the presentation of the Oscar Robertson Trophy to the national collegiate player of the year, the Wayman Tisdale Award to the freshman of the year and the Henry Iba Award to the coach of the year. The player of the year award is named after one of the greatest players in college history, three-time AllAmerican Oscar Robertson. The Tisdale Award is named in honor of the late Oklahoma great, Wayman Tisdale. The legendary Henry 16 F Cherry Diamond F MAR 2018

WEBER SCULPTS ROBERTSON The MAC and USBWA first had a connection in 2005, when St. Louis hosted the NCAA Final Four. That weekend, the MAC hosted the first USBWA awards banquet. That same year, MAC member Harry Weber was commissioned to sculpt the Oscar Robertson Trophy to be presented to the national player of the year. The trophy is based on an iconic photo of Robertson rebounding the ball while doing the splits in the air. Also in 2005, Weber created a Larry Bird trophy, which is presented to the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year.

He has created numerous other sports sculptures, including several that can be seen outside of Busch Stadium and a Norm Stewart statue that was unveiled outside of Mizzou Arena in November. Weber was excited to learn the Club would be hosting the College Basketball Awards. “Congrats to the MAC!” said Weber. “What Oscar could do was nothing short of amazing. Between sculptures of Oscar, Larry and Norm Stewart, I can say that basketball has been very good to me!”

NUTRITION tip EATING OUT

About 60% of Americans report eating out at a restaurant at least once a week, and many will eat out many more times in a week. Keep these healthy eating tips in mind when eating out. F Order first to avoid being swayed by others to make an unhealthy choice F Start the meal with a salad and order the dressing on the side. F Don’t be afraid to ask for substitutions; most restaurants are more than willing to accommodate. F Focus on ordering protein, vegetables and the smallest food item on the plate: a starch or carbohydrate. F When planning a big dinner or lunch, eat lighter for the other meals to budget more calories for that meal. F Eat about 20% less food. Stop eating when feeling 80% full to eat less and feel less uncomfortable. Studies show that people notice if it’s 30% less, but it goes undetected if its 20% less. This allows for a variety of food, but just decreases the quantity.

If you’re in business in St. Louis, then it’s a big mistake not being a member of the MAC,” he stresses. ROOF RESTORE FOR THE WEST CLUBHOUSE In addition to all the excellent repair and installation services offered, Frederic is also proud to provide the first restoration service of its kind in St. Louis: Roof Restore, a three-step process that leaves roofs completely free from black staining caused by airborne algae traveling up from the south. “Fifteen years ago, every once-in-a-while, we’d run into the issue of this black stain on shingles,” says Bob. “We really didn’t know what it was so I did some research. I went to one of our manufacturers, and it turned out to be airborne algae. So, to make a long story short, we came up with this solution of Roof Restore.” The Roof Restore system is broken down into three steps. “We kill the algae, clean the roof, then seal it so it doesn’t come back,” explains Bob. Once Roof Restore has been completed, it takes almost ten years for the algae to return. The result is a game-changer as shingles are brought back to their natural color, and the home’s curbappeal is drastically improved. “It brings the shingles back to the way they’re supposed to look,” adds Bob. Bob Frederic is proud to announce that the Missouri Athletic Club’s West Clubhouse will receive the Roof Restore treatment in mid-March. The black stain on the roof is] getting worse, and I knew it was a perfect roof to restore,” said Bob. Although the Roof Restore system appears to be new on the market, it has been around for 15 years. “We do it all the time, but we don’t really promote it that much since we’ve been so busy,” Bob says. “This year, with the number of roofs that have [algae], we’ve wanted to get [Roof Restore] out there. And it’s reasonably priced, too.” As the treatment is applied to the West Clubhouse, stay tuned for photo updates, social media posts and eventually a TV commercial highlighting the process and results. Investing in commercial and residential structures is what Frederic Roofing does best. So, it’s no surprise that this 89-yearold company is dedicated to preserving a fellow, longtime St. Louis institution, the Missouri Athletic Club. And, as Frederic Roofing likes to say, “For a hole in your roof, or a whole new roof, call Frederic Roofing.”

FIT FOR THE FUTURE

Referencing the results of the member survey, the MAC’s leaders plan expansion and renovation projects focused on the future of the Club. Building improvements, upgrades and renovations are constantly in the works at the Missouri Athletic Club. With two clubhouses, one more than 100 years old and on the National Register of Historic Places, trafficked by nearly 2,400 members and their families and guests on a regular basis, the wear and tear, changing times and needs call for maintenance, upgrades and renovations. Fortunately, the MAC’s onsite maintenance team, led by Skip Bowders, is prepared to take on numerous projects around the Club. Sometimes the needs are immediate and obvious; other times the Club and its leaders look to feedback from the members to prioritize projects. In September of 2012, a member survey was conducted. It touched on everything MAC: dining, athletics and fitness, social events, staff, clubhouse preferences, etc. More than 500 members participated and provided feedback. This information was used to plan and prioritize the future direction of the Club. As a result, fitness equipment was upgraded, the outdoor

pool received a facelift, tennis and squash courts were resurfaced, hotel rooms were renovated, and the 1903 adults-only bar and patio was added to the West Clubhouse. Coming up on five years later, with so many of the survey initiatives completed and an influx of new members on board, the decision was made to re-survey the membership. In 2017, 36% of the MAC’s members, representing 51% of MAC households completed the next survey. The Planning Committee used this feedback when considering projects most likely to have the strongest positive impact on the Club. The MAC’s fitness facilities and offerings were clearly areas important to the membership, and opportunities existed to make immediate improvements in these areas. One surprising results from the survey was that nearly 30% of members reported taking a fitness class at studios outside of the MAC, specifically yoga, barre, Pilates and spinning. This stood out as an immediate opportunity to provide better facilities and services so members do not seek these out elsewhere.

Starting with the Downtown Clubhouse, in August of 2017, the golf simulator was removed from 5M in the Athletic Department. The MAC’s maintenance team overhauled the 5M BEFORE space and converted it into a functional training room used for personal training and group exercise such as Courtney’s Turbo Shred, Cardio Shred and TRX:101 and Bridgett’s Lean, Fit and Functional Boot Camp. The renovation

included new flooring, lighting, fans, sound system, and state-of-the-art equipment such as free weights, a water rowing machine, punching bag, battle ropes, weighted balls, yoga mats, and TRX equipment. Immediately upon completion, members flocked to the new space, sang its praises, and eagerly anticipated the completion of the next project. On the 11th floor of the Downtown Clubhouse was an approximately 2,200 square foot room previously used for Judo. As soon as the functional training room on 5M was completed, work began on transforming this space into a group exercise room. The renovation project included new flooring, lighting, HVAC and ventilation, sound system, mirrors spanning the length of the room, and state-of-theart equipment such as free weights and kettlebells, battle ropes, watering rowing machine, punching bags, yoga mats, bosu balls, AstroTurf for weighted sprinting exercises and TRX equipment. As soon

as the renovation was complete in early 2018, one of the largest fitness classes in MAC history was held at the Downtown Clubhouse. This space is hopping with a wide range of fitness classes such as Keisha’s 30-Minute Abs, Courtney’s Bosu Blast, Dan’s Cardio Kickboxing, Rob’s Boot Camp, and more. All of the excitement at the Downtown Clubhouse has members asking about fitness renovations at the West Clubhouse. The Planning Committee and its task forces have been doing their due diligence to ensure that a sound plan is put into place.

Recently, the Board of Governors approved moving forward with the masterplan that includes three phases (Phase 1A, Phase 1B, and Phase 2). Phase 1A and 1B will expand the weight room. Phase 2 will incorporate group exercise studios for specific classes such as yoga, Pilates, and spinning as well as include three or five racquetball courts. This exciting project will officially launch at the President’s Foundations’ Ball in April. Stay tuned for more news as this project develops and look for many other renovations at both clubhouses in the months to come!

Fruits of the MAC: Fellowship and Friendship

Long-time MAC member and Apollos singer, Joseph E. Blanke, Jr., also known as “Jay”, recently passed away. His daughter shares how the MAC’s impact on his life brings comfort following his death. Joseph Blanke, Jr. became a MAC member in 1974. He got involved in racquetball as well as the Apollos, and he enjoyed the fellowship of the MAC in many other ways. He and his family celebrated JAY BLANKE SINGS IN AN countless holidays APOLLOS SHOW IN 2003. and special events at the Club including family wedding receptions and the biannual Apollo shows. After his recent passing on Dec. 7, Jay’s daughter, Anne Koetting, wanted to share with the MAC membership how much her father loved and cherished the Club. In this article, she shares some of the ways that the Club impacted her father’s life. On Dec. 10, Anne held her father’s wake

and some of the gentlemen who influenced her father’s life attended. “I especially want to thank the lovely gentleman Joe Hoffman, Bob Spinzig, Ed Sparks, Mike Wendling, Andy Eberhart, Art Hollenbach, and Kim DeMotte. The conversations with these wonderful men were so precious to myself, my mom, and my siblings.” “We all cannot express how much the MAC was one of the joys of my dad's life. He did not talk easily or openly about emotions often, yet it was always apparent to us how much the fellowship and friendships meant to him. Thank you to all of these gentlemen for blessing my dad's life with their friendship. Specifically, I remember telling Ed Sparks that I recalled attending an Apollos show when I was very young, and my Dad was dressed as a cowboy named “Blankety-Blank-Blank-Blank.” Ed laughed, and said, “I played opposite him; I was Sparkety-Spark!” What great memories!

The morning after Dad's funeral on Dec. 12, I brought the trash barrels around to the side of our house. I stopped and stared, for on the side of my house was a reflection. We have lived in this house for more than six years, but never before had I seen anything like this. I smiled inside and out as I thought of how this looked like the MAC’s Cherry Diamond logo. It was as if my dad was just smiling down on me and saying, ‘just fine.’”

VISIT CUBA WITH THE FOREVER YOUNG CLUB Visiting Cuba has become something of a political football, but those who have been there recently are happy to share their adventure. St. Louis architect John C. Guenther participated in an American Institute of Architects design conference held in Cuba in 2016. At this month's FYC meeting, Guenther will present a range of architecture and culture across the history of the island, stylistically and geographically, as well as share his observations of the U.S.’s southern neighbor, located just 93 miles from the Florida Keys. The MAC Proudly Congratulates Jefferson Bank & Trust on 125 Years Jefferson Bank was incorporated in 1892 and was one of the earliest neighborhood banks in the city of St. Louis. In 1950, the bank was purchased by MAC member Dillon Ross, who ran the bank as Chairman until his retirement in 1983. His son, Michael Ross, also a long-time MAC member, was named President in 1971 and Chairman upon his father’s retirement. MAC member John Dulle was named President in 2011. Jefferson serves the businesses and residents of the midtown area of St. Louis city and the larger metropolitan area through its branches in the Eureka area, South County, Creve Coeur and O’Fallon, Missouri. During the past 125 years, Jefferson Bank has weathered many storms. The Banker’s Panic in 1909 left the bank with a low of $440.50 in total deposits. After the opening of a savings department, the bank rebounded to $415,000 in deposits by 1915. Continued growth was the reason

for the move in 1922 to larger quarters. The bank remained solvent during the Great Depression and the 1933 “Banking Holiday” declared by President Franklin Roosevelt. The economic downturn in 1974 and the high prime rate/high inflation era of the early 1980s as well as the recent Great Recession and the accompanying commercial real estate collapse of 20072010 were all challenges that were met by bank management of the time. During 2017, Jefferson Bank was awarded a 5-Star Rating by the national bank rating service, Bauer Financial. This placed Jefferson Bank among the safest financial institutions in the United States. Much of this is owed to the bank’s longterm staff and clientele—some of whom have been customers of the bank for two or even three generations. The bank ended 2017 with approximately $610 million in total assets. For more than 30 years, Jefferson Bank

Her inspiration often came from DEER LAKE RIFFLES hiking in the mountains or helping her grandmother tend to her lovely gardens. Today, as a Master Gardener, fine art photographer and artist, the architecture and landscape beauty of St. Louis has been an inspiration. In 2014, the artist was honored to have a solo exhibit at the Missouri Botanical Garden as part of the stl250 celebration. Her photo of “Sledding on Art Hill” was featured at the Sheldon Art Galleries and in the book, “The City at 250, a Celebration of St. Louis in Photographs.” Her artwork has been featured in local and national juried exhibitions at galleries including: Old Orchard Gallery, Soulard Art Market, Des Peres Hospital, Knox Fine Art Gallery, Webster Arts Center and the St. Louis Artists Guild. www.artistinbloom.com
