RUN FOR THE BOARD The Missouri Athletic Club Nominating Committee is seeking 10 qualified candidates to run for the 2013 Club election. Don’t miss this rewarding chance to give back to the Club. If you are interested in running, please contact Linda Van de Riet at 314-539-4448 or lvanderiet@mac-stl.org. Nomination packets, complete with a photo, letter of intent and biography are due by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2013. After receiving all applications, the Nominating Committee will narrow the field of candidates down to 10. These 10 people will appear on the ballot for the Club election on Thursday, May 2. The top five election winners will be announced at 8 p.m. on May 2, in the Missouri Room, and will serve a three-year term on the Board. Not only is it a way to give back to the Club, but the experience is extremely rewarding. Being a Governor is fun! You get to attend and participate in many Club events. You will also instantaneously make 14 new friends, and meet 10 other new individuals in the two years to follow. Those who serve on the Board are extremely dedicated, hardworking individuals. In other words, they are great people to know. Running for the Board is also a great way to connect with other non-Board Missouri Athletic Club members. You will certainly gain notoriety within the Club, whether or not you win. In fact, running for the Board is half the fun. You will walk away having gained much more out of your membership. Between dinners and other special events, the candidates develop a deep camaraderie that few ever forget. Whether you decide to run for the Board or not, make plans now to be at the Downtown Clubhouse on Election Day, May 2. Experience all of the excitement first hand with a walk through the famed MAC gauntlet.

MARCH 2013

John Bugh Elected Next President of the MAC Four Other Officers Named John Bugh has been elected the 98th president of the Missouri Athletic Club. The Club’s 15-member Board of Governors elected Bugh and the other four senior officers on Wednesday, Jan. 30. All will begin a one-year term of office in May. Bugh is the Regional Managing Director at Great Southern Bank. He joined the MAC in 2000 and has been active Downtown and at West. Bugh chairs the Finance Committee, is a member of the Audit and Pension Committee and the Preservation Foundation. He has been active in the basketball leagues and the MAC Golf Club. Bugh and his wife Jill have three children, Madison, Molly Kate and Will. The other four officers are Judith Hanses, first vice-president; Mary Frontczak, second vice-president; Terry Hammer, secretary and Troy Robertson, treasurer. Bugh will succeed Joel Karsten and take office on May 16.

President’s Column

President’s Column President Joel L. Karsten

“Why the MAC?” Last spring, before I began my one-year term as MAC President, I had the pleasure of joining fellow member Mark Ohlendorf for dinner. Mark recommended to me a book titled “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek. This book gave me pause to reflect on our great Club and “Why” we and our families joined the Missouri Athletic Club. If I asked each member and their family members “How” do you use the Club, I might get hundreds or even thousands of different responses. The answers would range from enjoying your favorite athletic/ fitness amenity, to attending our marquee social events, to frequent dining experiences at one of your favorite restaurants and much more. “What” the MAC offers at both our Clubhouses can be seen each month in the Cherry Diamond or on our Weekly Buffet and Clubs Within the Club emails. “What” we offer continues to improve daily under the operational leadership of our General Manager Wally Smith and action we, as a Board of Governors, have taken in response to your feedback from the member survey. Upgrades to the Stan Musial Grill area, improved fitness equipment, new pool furniture and the strategic plan to make the bar area at our West Clubhouse an improved destination are all in the works. So, back to the question of “Why the MAC?” I believe this answer would be similar for all of us. It can summarized simply in three areas: Camaraderie, Relationships and Our Employees. The word camaraderie has been experienced at the MAC since our inception

in 1903. Every banquet and Club-sponsored event creates an atmosphere of camaraderie. Every conversation in the locker room, lobby or Jack Buck Grill over a cold beverage is camaraderie in action. A friendly athletic competition on a squash court, tennis court, basketball court or in one of the fitness areas creates that same level of competition/ camaraderie that is second-to-none. Whether it is an Apollos practice on Monday night, a Toastmasters meeting or attending one of your favorite Clubs within the Club event, camaraderie is all around us. Relationships are the second reason “Why” we are members of the MAC. One of my favorite parts of being a member is when you walk into the MAC and see a familiar face; it might be a member or one of your favorite employees. The MAC is all about relationships. If you take a moment to consider how many relationships in your life are a direct connection to being a member at the MAC, your list is likely to be a long one. Relationships with fellow members, fellow couples, and business associates have all been formed and developed here at your Club. The MAC is a place to foster our most important relationships; the ones with our families and loved ones. Spending time participating in athletics with your kids (Junior Tennis, Sports Camps, Swimming), attending the Father-Daughter Banquet or enjoying a meal with your kids or grandkids, reinforces that this is truly a gathering place for those most important in our lives. Lastly, the employees at the MAC are “ Why” we are members. The dedication

of our employees who serve us each and every day is truly what sets us apart from the competition. As our economy continues to slowly improve, let’s not forget that our Club is a job provider for our 300 employees and their families. As we start down a path of continued financial improvement and growth, we will also become a job creator and that is a “win-win” for all of us. Next time you see an employee, thank them for the hard work and effort they give us each and every day. So, the next time someone asks “Why should my family and I join the MAC?” Might I suggest you share “ How” you use the Club and “ What” the MAC has to offer, but most importantly tell them “Why!” It’s a place like no other - where camaraderie is experienced and relationships are forged! The second MAC Gala and Auction was a memorable night! The Board of Governors received many thanks for the efforts of the staff and the event itself. One that stands out was from a member who said, “I have been a member for 37 years and this was the best social event I have ever attended!” Thanks to all who donated, sponsored or attended. The event raised $85,000, with 80% going back into the Club for capital improvements. Finally, congratulations to John Bugh on being elected the 98th President of the Missouri Athletic Club. John is a Regional Managing Director for Commercial Lending at Great Southern Bank. His business background and financial expertise will be a great asset for our Club during his term. John is a picture-perfect member. You will soon see John’s energy and passion for the MAC in action when he assumes his leadership role in May. The Bugh family (wife Jill; daughters Madison and Molly Kate and son Will) are avid users of both Clubhouses for personal and professional use. See you around the Club!

MAC Champion: John Byrne 1. How do you use the Club? As a businessman, I use the Club for investment meetings, and enjoy meeting new members at both Clubhouses. My wife and family enjoy playing tennis and using the pool at West. 2. How did you get involved with recruiting new members? I believe the Downtown Clubhouse is an unheard of secret that is very reasonably priced and is a magnificent facility for the many uses of a businessman. 3. How many members have you recruited? 6-8 4. How do you utilize the MAC catering department? I was fortunate to have a lovely daughter get married on New Year’s Eve night, 2012, and we used the Grand Ballroom Downtown. Because of the wonderful staff of the MAC, and Terri Lee, our night was spectacular. I also use the catering services at West for business meetings twice a month. It’s a great central location and the facilities and food are outstanding. 5. How do you utilize the MAC overnight guest rooms? We had over 25 guests come in from out of town for my daughter’s wedding. I also have guests from New York and Chicago that fly in town, looking for more than just a hotel to stay at. The MAC provides a great facility for an out-oftown guest to work out in the morning, have a great lunch in the afternoon, and enjoy the downtown St. Louis community and entertainment (Cardinals, Rams, Blues, etc.). I would like to thank President Joel Karsten and General Manager Wally Smith for doing an excellent job at both facilities with the MAC. It’s a club to be proud of, and a great opportunity to introduce friends and new clients to join the Club. 12

GM’s Column

From the General Manager’s Desk Wally Smith

Dear Members: “Why” the MAC? President Karsten lays out a compelling case for your inclusion, membership and belonging to the MAC in this month’s issue of the Cherry Diamond. Building on his theme of Camaraderie, Relationships and Our Employees, I’d like to add a tad and briefly touch on Value. Bing defines Value as the relative worth, merit, or importance; the value of a college education; the value of a queen in chess; the value of a trusted friend… Let’s look at camaraderie and try to place a Value on that concept. I’ve said it many times: Great Clubs all have a common thread that bind them together. In fact, that thread is what initially brings people, clubs and organizations together. In 1903, our founders set out to establish the MAC “to be the premier athletic, social and dining club for business, professional and civic leaders and their families in the St. Louis area.” While the word camaraderie is not expressly noted within, that idea and mission could not have be born or achieved, and would have been destined to fail without its living presence. And, it existed not only between the founders themselves, but between the countless members, governors, presidents, managers and staff throughout these past 11 decades. Camaraderie at your Club was on full display during the Gala last month. Before, during and after, our members,

governors, our president, managers and our staff all pulled together for one cause; to generate funds aimed directly at improving our athletic, social, dining, business and family experiences.” You could feel it, and almost touch it as the night went on. That’s the MAC when you engage. That’s the thread of camaraderie which runs like a steel cable, welding generations of St. Louis’ finest together here at the MAC: Priceless! How about the value of relationships? Having just returned from the Annual Club Managers educational conference, where I have been a member for 30 years, I can talk about relationships. I can talk about the value of great friends and knowing people. I can talk about our members here at the MAC taking care of each other, calling upon each other, doing business together, having fun and helping each other. I can talk about the guys in the Jack Buck Grill having their cocktails after the racquet ball game on Mondays. Those same guys have been meeting every Monday for 40-plus years. They know each other and are the very best of friends. That’s the value of the MAC, and creating lifelong relationships when you’re engaged. Let’s touch on our Employees. What value can you place on 300+ families earning a good living with excellent benefits and opportunity? How about the camaraderie and relationships developed between each other, not to mention those between employee and member? Currently $7,000,000 + in payroll per year, plus taxes, and the economic impact the MAC has powered

community-wide over the last 110 years. Value generated both personally and globally. A quote from Peter Sheahan a new young bestselling author and club guru stated, “Many people join a club and then fail to avail themselves of what it has to offer, either because they’re unaware of what’s going on, or because they’re afraid to get involved.” Peter is spot on, and I can promise you that it’s your engaged, involvement that produces that tremendous Value. Value: An amount, as of goods, services, or money, considered to be a fair and suitable equivalent for something else; a fair price or return. Two distinct Clubhouses, a plethora of programming, world class reciprocal sister clubs, golf, camaraderie, relationship and engaged employees who care and want to make a difference: Priceless! And for even more Value, invite your new Platinum Partner in on the fun and create ever greater Value for your MAC dollar. All the very best, Wally ~Wally

Valentine’s Ball

Dinner, Dancing and Giving at the MAC Valentine’s Ball

Cupid struck MAC members and guests at the annual Valentine’s Ball. The romantic evening began with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the Art Lounge. Couples then made their way to the elegant Missouri Ballroom for a delicious three-course dinner. After dessert, the Ambassadors of Swing had sweethearts dancing the night away on the ballroom floor. This year, the Dance Club paired with the Charitable Society for Children for the CSC’s annual check presentation. Checks were presented to the three charities from 2012: Our Little Haven, Southside Early Childhood Center and Walker Scottish Rite Clinic. Each charity received $7,276, which was collected throughout

Biggest Losers Shape UP Inspired by the hit television show the “Biggest Loser,” the MAC began hosting its own weight loss contest in January. The contest has reached the midway point, and will conclude on March 23. This year, 10 members are working out at both Clubhouses. Included in the contest for each participant are health assessments, nutrition classes, as well as periodic weigh-ins. The winner of the contest will be the person who loses the most percentage of body weight, not the most pounds lost. Fantastic prizes will be presented to the winners. This is truly a contest where everyone who participates is a winner. The contest participants are experiencing noticeable results. The competitive element of the contest and the spirit of camaraderie among the participants have served as great motivators. Read the May Cherry Diamond for the final results.

Train with Keisha Downtown

Sometimes, all you need to get yourself to that next fitness level is a little extra push from an outside source. Working out with a personal trainer may be just what you need to drop those last five pounds or tone your abs. Keisha Burns has been with the Club for over 10 years, and works as both a personal trainer and fitness class instructor. Keisha came to the MAC with a degree in sports management, where her emphasis was in fitness and sports medicine. She also has certifications in personal training and Pilates from such organizations as the American Council on Exercise. With a lifelong commitment to fitness, including scholarships in cross country and track, Keisha has the ability to make what some would consider work into fun. If you have trouble finding the motivation to get to the gym, or just need that extra encouragement, Keisha will be there to push you through your workouts. “Working out with a trainer holds you accountable to show up and do your best,” Keisha said. “With someone there instructing you throughout your workout, you will stay focused till you are finished.” At the Downtown Clubhouse, Keisha teaches kettle bells, core class, boot camp and spinning. If you are looking to focus your attention to a certain area of the body like abs or arms, Keisha is able to tailor your workout to that body part. She is also available for overall fitness training. To set up an appointment with Keisha, call 314-267-6041.

Gala Recap

Bright Lights Gala and Auction A big “thank you” to all who made January’s Bright Lights Gala and Auction a tremendous success! It was a fun night of MAC spirit and camaraderie. A special thanks to the auction sponsors, plus the many members and friends of the Club who donated and purchased from a great lineup of items. The Silent Auction Committee led by Marie Salter and the staff pulled together to make the event a big success. The ballroom looked fantastic with custom ice sculptures, delicious buffets and even better camaraderie as members enjoyed each other’s company and bidding wars. The night ended with fun dueling piano band. It was a fun and

very successful evening. The gala and auction raised $85,000 to go right back into the Club. Eighty percent of the proceeds raised from the auction will go towards new athletic equipment at West, which will be installed this month; new pool furniture at West in May; and upgrading the West dining and bar operations. Ten percent will go towards the MAC Preservation Foundation and the remaining 10 percent will go to the Charitable Society for Children.

In partnership with the Ferguson-Florissant School District, Boys Hope Girls Hope recruits high-potential, high risk 8th graders to participate in college-preparatory and character development. Programming occurs after school, on weekends and during the summer. As with the residential program, parents and guardians are vital partners. Services extend through high school graduation, the transition to college and college completion.

He’s not bringing a kiln, but with plenty of pictures and anecdotes, Forever Young Club speaker Doug Auer will inspire a new appreciation for the art form. Doug began blowing glass in 1996, and taught it at Washington University. In 2001, he co-founded Third Degree Glass Factory, the only public-access glass art education center within 300 miles of St. Louis. His current design focus is modernization of the classic tear-drop shape. The Forever Young Club invites everyone to join us at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 15. Apollos Celebrate 70th Anniversary

Join the Apollos as they celebrate their 70th anniversary at the MAC. The group has been going strong since its founding in 1943. Apollos perform two dinner shows annually, in April and November. In December, they perform at both Breakfast with Santa events, as well as on a tour of area nursing homes. Their performance on Friday, April 26 is appropriately titled, “Celebrating Our 70th.” The Apollos will sing songs that reflect the diversity of popular musical tastes over the past several decades. Each song was chosen for its popularity in the birth year of an Apollo. The wide range of ages among members will make this an interesting musical mix. Classic favorites such as “Ol’ Man River,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “Amazing Grace” and “Oklahoma” will be on the program along with period pop tunes like “Ghost Riders in the Sky” and “Kansas City,” plus modern-era songs like “Moondance” and “That’s What Friends Are For.” Music Director Marc Strathman will conduct the Apollos, along with a four-piece band, for this performance. Apollos Spring Concert Friday, April 26 6 p.m. $34.95 + gratuity Downtown Clubhouse Call 314-539-4470 for reservations.

The MAC Toastmasters are well known both within the MAC, and not just because we take up a large table at the Jack Buck Grill every Wednesday night. About two years ago, I joined Toastmasters, and it turned me from an occasional Club user to a regular. There were some soon-to-be familiar faces who successfully reeled me in - faces which many MAC members would likely recognize: Two Toastmasters have served as MAC president, and several sit on the Board of Governors. More importantly than who we are, is what we have done; membership in Toastmasters has helped numerous individuals - including several professional or semi-pro speakers - become more comfortable speaking. They have developed a more fluent vocabulary; make fewer grammatical errors; and develop as business, community and MAC leaders of today, and tomorrow. To just talk about what we have done for ourselves does not encompass the entirety of what we have done. Many Toastmasters have participated in the Youth Toastmasters program, whereby MAC members’ children can spend an hour per week learning how to become better speakers, themselves. We have extended this program to students of Loyola Academy, helping contribute to the efforts to revitalize childhood education within St. Louis City. Many Toastmasters who struggled with public speaking now feel comfortable going out into the public world and giving speeches, whether in the courtroom, on the political stump or at events for their profession. It is a great CWC to join, and one in which I am truly privileged to lead during 2013. Stop by and join us for an hour, and see for yourself! Toastmasters meetings are held every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., in the Downtown Clubhouse. If you stick around to chat after, the first round at the Jack Buck Grill is on us.

MAC Building Stands on Historic Ground The following data was compiled by Bert Loewenstein, a member of the Club for more than 25 years and an authority on early state and local history. When Pierre Laclede Ligueste in 1764 founded the village of Saint Louis as the headquarters for trading post, the plot of land upon which the Missouri Athletic Club stands today, was a part of the original French grant claimed by him. Under the Paris treaty made in 1763, France had ceded all of her territory west of the Mississippi to Spain, but it was not until 1767 that the Spanish authorities took over military control of St. Louis. Under the Spanish administration, the ground now occupied by the Club seems to have been held under various ownerships. It was a part of a field used for pasturage and faced the Common Field, which extended west from about the present Broadway to Jefferson Ave. The southern limit of the Common Field was about Market Street and the northern end was the Big Mound from which Mound Street derived its name. Some time after 1818, the ground on which the MAC now stands, was occupied by Colonel John O’Fallon, nephew of General William Clark. About 1829, the members of the First Methodist Church, which from 1821 to 1830, had held worship in a crude wooden structure at Fourth and Myrtle Street (now Clark Ave.), decided to build a new brick

church. Colonel O’Fallon generously offered the site at Fourth and Washington. The new church was dedicated on Sept. 30, 1830, and many important events connected with the religious, social and civic life of the rapidly growing city, were solemnized within its walls, in the 23 years of its standing. For a short period it was used by the Mormons, who came to Missouri in large numbers from Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. In 1853, the church was sold for $50,000, and in 1859, it was torn down to be replaced by a block of business buildings. Across the street from the church, at the northeast corner of Fourth and Washington, stood the residence of Col. Joshua B. Brand, brother-in-law of Senator Thomas H. Benton, who made his home here when Congress was not in session. The new commercial buildings erected on the Club site were used as headquarters by the Union Army in Missouri, during the Civil War. The corner room on the second floor at Fourth and Washington Avenue, was the office of such noted commanders as Generals Halleck, Schofield, Curtis and Rosecrans. In 1888, the site was one again cleared for the erection of a handsome new building for the Boatmen’s Bank. This building planned by Thomas B. Annan, was completed and occupied by the bank in 1891. The upper floors were a part of the Washington Avenue frontage of the ground floor, were leased to the A.F. Shapleigh Hardware Company. About 10 years later, the Shapleigh Company moved to the building across the street on the Northeast Corner of Fourth and Washington and the newly organized Missouri Athletic Club arranged a lease with the Boatmen’s Bank for the Hardware Company’s old quarters. Extensive alterations were made and the entire interior of the building was remodeled to meet the needs of the original Missouri Athletic Club. Today, the Missouri Athletic Club holds a unique and enviable position among the better clubs of America. Now entering it’s 26th year in its new building, it marches on no greater achievement as the ace of Athletic Clubs, adding new lustre to its Cherry Diamond emblem and making new history on the old plot at Fourth and Washington.

History

The following was published in the April 1941 issue of the Cherry Diamond, which commemorated the 25th anniversary of the current Downtown Clubhouse’s grand opening in 1916.

Editor’s note: The Downtown Clubhouse opened on March 1, 1916 and will celebrate its centennial in 2016. The MAC, and its current Downtown Clubhouse, have been thriving in the St. Louis community for 96 years.

Marilynne Bradley is this month’s featured artist in the MAC Art Gallery at the Downtown Clubhouse. Her curiosity of the world is reflected in her paintings. Architectural structures compete with crowds of outdoor activity. The interplay of figures with the scene makes the composition come to life in a burst of excitement and drama. The many moods are created by the relationship between glowing light and dark patterns. Her skills as a draftsman enable her to use architectural design elements into her paintings. Marilynne received her BFA degree from Washington University, an MAT from Webster University and her MFA from Syracuse University. Marilynne Bradley is a professor at Webster University in the MAT program, teaching drawing, painting and watercolor. Her

watercolors are recognized in museum exhibitions, major national juried competitions, and are included in many major corporate collections around the world. In her work, Bradley seeks to preserve the architecture of buildings while exploring the energy and charm of the cities in which they’re set, frequently focusing on her hometown of St. Louis. She has written and illustrated several books, the latest being “St. Louis in Watercolor.”
