LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT s the weather resumes its march toward spring and COVID vaccines produce positive results, we continue our journey toward a destination of normalcy. We observe a steady escalation of Club utilization by Members. The morning crew at both Clubhouses enthusiastically return to their early morning rituals. Members progressively resume dining, sharing beverages and attending events. Although some of our experiences depart from typical norms, Members navigate the policies and procedures and, while challenges exist, each Member enjoys their MAC experience within their own comfort level. It may be some time, if ever, that we return to all the experiences in the manner that we relish. In the meantime, the MAC will evolve to provide a premier experience for us under whatever circumstances we encounter. Membership stands at 2,141 and, in January, we saw positive trends in net new Members for the first time since the start of the pandemic. That trend continued in February. Thank you to our Membership Committee and staff for continuing the work of adding new Members. All of our Members are on the membership team, and we appreciate our Members’ assistance in continuing the positive momentum. Reminder: For every new Member referred by a Member between now and Aug. 1, the referring Member earns a $500 platinum card for use as a credit on any non-dues spending within the Club. For our Platinum Members, also note that under recent changes, if you lose your platinum partner, you no longer lose your Platinum status. Once a Platinum, always a Platinum. Financially, our Club remains on a steady course, with cash flow outpacing budget through the first half of the fiscal year. The MAC qualified for an Employee Retention Tax Credit program as part of the Disaster Relief Act of 2020. Funds from this program bestow an unexpected, but favorable tail wind. As we manage the ongoing operations, deploying our resources wisely, we also contemplate the future of the MAC. The Board and Planning Committee recently held a whiteboard planning session to continue the important exercise of strategic planning. In addition to continuing to make our Club premier for our Members, we ponder what future membership looks like and consider trends that will impact our Club in the future. This interactive session, facilitated by a design strategist, was highly informative and engendered forward looking thinking for the Club. We also examined potential capital projects, including required sustentation projects as well as elective projects. Our 10-year capital plan includes these projects, which we will refine and prioritize as we move forward into more lucrative times as hotel and banquet activity returns. In a special column next month, Governor McLaughlin, chair of the Planning Committee, will share

A

her reflections on recent enhancements to our planning process and the importance of strategic thinking. Continuity of leadership at the Club is bright. Through governance orientation sessions and other initiatives, we are building a strong pipeline of future leaders. Preparations are underway for the election of a new Governor class on May 6. The five new Governors will commence service May 20 on a historic board that includes the first female President of the MAC, Angie Minges. Angie’s election has already garnered considerable positive attention for the MAC. We commissioned several task forces in 2020 to focus on important topics impacting the MAC. Our Membership Engagement Task Force continues to devise innovative ways of engaging our membership during the COVID pandemic. Our Diversity & Inclusion Task Force pursues the important work of ensuring that the MAC remains an inclusive place for our employees, Members and guests. We recently held engagement listening sessions with diverse employees from both Clubhouses. We were encouraged by the feedback received and accepting of prospects for improvement. The Women's Initiative Group held a strategy session to brainstorm ways the group can support the strategic framework in the upcoming year, including opportunities to enhance female recruitment and engagement within the Club. Our Civic Engagement Task Force focuses on leveraging the MAC, as a leader in the community, in engagement with regional, state, county and city civic leaders to foster engagement and influence. Recently, the MAC affiliated with the leader of the St. Louis area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, who will serve on our Civic Engagement Task Force. Our Downtown Safety Task Force (DSTF) promotes safety and security at our Downtown Clubhouse and in the city. From new technology to enhanced lighting and additional security, we have strengthened the safety of the Club for our Members. We recently established a Branding Task Force that will lead the branding efforts for the Club by developing the marketing strategy and brand architecture, including identify and developing the elements needed to create an internal marketing/loyalty campaign. The state of our Club is strong, and we are on pace to emerge from the pandemic poised to continue as the premier athletic, social and dining club for business professionals and their families in the St. Louis region. I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

A New Website And Mobile App Experience is Coming! Next month, the MAC is upgrading to a brand new website and mobile app provider. The new website and app will be more functional and accessible, with all of your favorite MAC features at your fingertips and on-the-go. The new website will be hosted by Jonas, the company the MAC currently uses for its billing system. Using one company for both back-end systems will streamline many of the site’s key aspects and make it easier to use for both Members and the employees who maintain it. One main component that’s going to affect many Members right at the website’s launch is the ACH billing system. For their own security, Members who are enrolled in auto-payments will need to re-enter their banking information on the website upon its launch to ensure the electronic payments continue to process, and those who were used to viewing their statements online will need to update their profiles to be able to access them. It’s imperative that Members transition their information to the new website because it will not carry over. Once the website is live on April 5, Members can navigate to the Statements page and click on the button that says “Pay Now.” By clicking this link, a new tab or window will open up, taking them to the Elavon portal. From there, Members will be able to pay their bill. They will be required to enter their payment information, as this information will not be on file initially with Elavon. This information can be stored for future payments if they like, but it is not required. More information on this will be available in the coming weeks. For the latest news on the website and mobile app rollout, please keep an eye on your email and MAC social media channels. The days surrounding the launch of the new platforms will feature special promotions for Members, and you won’t want to miss out!

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER t the end of 2020, President Trump signed into effect a $900 billion Coronavirus Response and Economic Relief Bill. This bill brought with it benefits for the MAC financially, and we are starting to see the effects of it already! According to the National Club Association, the employee retention tax credit has been extended and enhanced. The program, which initially only included businesses with 100 or fewer employees, has been expanded to include businesses with 500 or fewer employees. The MAC now fits into this category, which means we’re eligible to receive a credit in the first quarter of 2021 and possibly another one in the second quarter. It’s no secret that the pandemic has been hard on the private club industry, and the MAC is no exception. These funds will go a long way in making sure the MAC continues to hold its place in the industry and region as a premier athletic, dining and social Club for business, professional and civic leaders. We are grateful that these funds will bring additional financial stability in a time that’s full of ups and downs. Years ago, there was a 100 percent deduction for business meals in place, and Clubs like the MAC saw thriving lunch hours with countless businesspeople in and out of restaurant doors mid-day. When it was lowered to a 50 percent deduction, there was less enthusiasm and motivation for businesspeople to take their coworkers and clients to lunches at places like the MAC. The previously mentioned relief bill bumps that deduction back up to 100 percent, and we hope this encourages our Members to conduct their business meetings and lunches at our dining facilities both Downtown and West

A

Clubhouses. Come show off your Club to your coworkers and clients and enjoy premier service at the Sportsman’s Club, Stan Musial Grille and 1903 dining room! As we continue to navigate through this pandemic, your safety is at the top of our priority list. We want our Members to come out to their Club and enjoy all it has to offer - from reduced capacity events to socially distanced workout classes. On the following page, you’ll find an article about how we’re taking care of the air you’re breathing when you’re at the Club and keeping you as safe as possible from the COVID-19 virus while you’re here. The MAC is a safe haven in these transitional times, and we are grateful to our Members who choose to spend their time at our Clubhouses and with each other. Whether you’re attending our events virtually or in person, we are constantly adapting to keep our Members engaged with each other to feel that sense of community and camaraderie that’s so vital to the spirit of the MAC. This year presents an opportunity for you as Members to truly embrace all the MAC has to offer. If you’ve been spending a lot of time at home, reach out to a fellow Member and see if they would join you for a drink in the 1903 bar or take a yoga class with you. Find that sense of community and seek refuge at your Club!

SECURITY In recent months, the Cherry Diamond has featured several new initiatives at the Downtown Clubhouse to ensure the safety and security of our Members. These initiatives have included the installation of new and upgraded cameras in and around the Clubhouse, the installation of new lights in the parking garage, the addition of a security guard between the parking garage and building for larger events, and more. But it’s important to keep in mind safety and security efforts outside of crime prevention, including protection from COVID-19 particles in the air. The building standard HVAC filter was the pleated MERV 8 filter. However, a recent Wall Street Journal video highlighted that experts recommend that schools and businesses upgrade to the MERV 13 filter. This filter has a higher efficiency and can filter smaller particles than the MERV 8, such as the COVID-19 virus. It’s able to remove 80 percent or more of viruses that might be in the air and can be installed in standard ventilation systems. After looking into this, MAC administrators made the decision to implement all air handler units (AHUs) with the upgraded filter. Between the Downtown and West Clubhouses, 73 AHUs have been modified with the MERV 13 filters. These filters have been installed over the past few months and will be changed regularly to ensure the cleanliness of the air circulating at both MAC Clubhouses. They encompass every floor of both buildings, with multiple in some spaces to provide the safest atmosphere for our Members. Years ago, a PACE project allowed the MAC to overhaul the

Downtown Clubhouse ventilation system. The Club changed out the AHUs, and the new system allowed more fresh air to be brought in. The installation of these filters adds to the effectiveness of the system, and additional ventilation system upgrades for the Downtown Clubhouse are featured in next year’s capital plan.

Secure Your PA RT N E R S H I P STAT U S The Platinum Partnership has been a recruitment tool for the Club since its inception approximately 10 years ago, and it has added a great boost to Club Members referring their friends and colleagues over the years. One sideeffect of this program has been the negative effects of losing a Platinum Partner who resigns or takes a leave from the Club. This negative aspect has especially come to light during the pandemic and unfortunate lockdown of the MAC facilities. In an effort to make the Platinum Partnership program an entirely positive experience, the Membership Committee and Board of Governors have approved the following changes to the plan. F Effective Oct. 1, all Members in the

Platinum Partnership dues category will remain in the category even if their Partner should resign or go on a leave from the Club. F This will remain in effect until such time as any Board of Governors could make changes to the Membership categories in the future. F To form a Platinum Partnership, any current Member of the Club must also be the new Members Proposing or Seconding Sponsor. F Now is the perfect time for any Member in the Diamond Club or À la Carte categories to recruit a Member and lock in their Platinum Partnership. F Bring your potential Platinum Partner to the Monthly Membership Mixer to give them a taste of the Club.

Give the Gift of Membership Receive $500 Club Credit for Each Referral Just because you already have a Platinum Partnership does not mean you should stop referring new Members to the Club. Starting Nov. 1, for each new Member referred to the Club, the referring Member will receive a Platinum Bonus of $500 Club credit. F With each new Member referred to the Club, the referring Member will receive a $500 Club credit on their statement. F There is no limit on the number of incentives a sponsoring Member can earn and more than one new Member can be referred for a credit in any given month. F A referral, as a referral credit, will not be awarded after the prospective Member has been approved by the Board of Governors. F The referring Member must act as a Proposing or Seconding Sponsor. F A referral credit will not be granted if the Membership Department introduces the new Member to the active Member. F The Monthly Membership Mixer is the perfect place to introduce potential Members to the Club. F This program will end on Aug. 1, 2021. Hermann Trophy Kicked Back to Spring BAN Q U E T TO BE HEL D ON MAY 27

Presented by

Due to COVID-19 concerns, college soccer shifted from fall to a spring season. The action will kick off in early February and will conclude with the Men’s and Women’s College Cup May 13-17. Ten days after the national championship games, on May 27, the MAC will present the Hermann Trophy to the top male and female players in college soccer. Since 1986, the MAC has honored the top rising stars in soccer every January. In this unusual year, the 2021 banquet will be held in the spring for the first time. Some of the biggest names in the sport including Mia Hamm, Alexi Lalas, Tony Meola and Kelley O’Hara have won the top individual award in college soccer prior to achieving international stardom. Catarina Macario of Stanford, the winner of the previous two Hermann Trophies, appears to be the latest former winner poised

to become the next big star. In January, she signed a professional contract with Lyon and is preparing to make her mark with the U.S. Women’s National Team at this summer’s Olympic Games. Be on the lookout for more information about reservations to the Hermann Trophy banquet and follow the latest news on the candidates for this year’s award by following on Twitter @HermannTrophy or the website machermanntrophy.org. FIRST QUARTER FINANCIAL REPORT s a supplement to my quarterly financial reports, below is a summary of where the club stands financially through the first five months of our fiscal year, September through January. For the five months, operating revenue was $550,000 less favorable than budget, largely due to temporary closing of West’s indoor dining during one of the busiest times of the year. Food and Beverage revenue at the Downtown clubhouse was also impacted as many groups ultimately canceled their holiday parties. On the positive side, Tennis and West Pro Shop revenues have been better than anticipated. In addition, we’ve experienced a positive variance of $150,000 in our Repairs and Utilities departments compared to budget, $85,000 in the General Clubhouse departments, and $85,000 in Administrative and General expenses. GREAT NEWS — The MAC now qualifies for round two of the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC). The new provisions extend the ERTC to June 30, 2021 and expand eligibility to larger employers. Our eligibility carries through the first quarter and may possibly extend through

A

the second quarter. Through the end of January, we’ve recognized $625,000 in ERTC credits. As a result, the club has experienced positive operating cash flow of $740,000 year to date. This is nearly $710,000 better than the budget, although $370,000 less than last year. Looking ahead through May, we anticipate soft revenue in dues and overnight rooms, while expenses should continue to trend under budget. We will also have the benefit of the ERTC through March which will give a boost to cash flow. As you have likely noticed, the Food and Beverage Minimum has been waived for the months of December through February and Diamond Club members receive a $30 Food and Beverage Relief credit. Enjoy all the MAC has to offer in a safe, clean environment. Your Club is open and ready to serve you! F

Using a Donor Advised Fund to Support the MAC Preservation Foundation Using a Donor Advised Fund is a very easy and convenient way to distribute charitable contributions to your favorite charities. A Donor Advised Fund is basically a special account that you establish at a financial institution which is set up to receive charitable contributions. When you make a deposit to your Donor Advised Fund, you receive a charitable tax deduction in the year in which the deposit is made. Deposits normally take the form of cash or securities but other assets may also be used. You can decide how you would like your account balance to be invested until you make decisions regarding which charities you would like to distribute money to. When you want to make a distribution to a charity, you simply go onto the financial institution’s website, access your account, and direct the financial institution to send a check to the charity of your choice. You may be asked to provide the address and tax identification number for the charity. If you already have a Donor Advised Fund established and would like to direct a contribution to the MAC Preservation Foundation, use this information: Missouri Athletic Club Preservation Foundation, 405 Washington Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri 63102; tax identification number: 20-8168836

What Are the Next Steps? 1. Contact Cynthia Goudy, Director of Philanthropy, or Larry Absheer, Director of Advancement, to learn more about how you can use a Donor Advised Fund to facilitate your charitable giving 2. Receive assistance from Cynthia or Larry in setting up a Donor Advised Fund 3. Make a contribution to your Donor Advised Fund and receive an immediate charitable tax deduction for 2021 4. MAC Members Come Together

for MAC Charities While many people underwent hardship last year, the pandemic especially took a toll on charities. However, the MAC's Members rallied around our 2020 charities, coming through with enough to donate $10,460.10 to each of our three charities: The Buddy Fund, Ready Readers and the Snow Foundation. This year, in lieu of a live presentation, the Charitable Society for Children chair Jarid King and c0-chair Nat Walsh presented the checks to these charities personally. The charities' proposers were also invited to attend the presentation due to their help in connecting the Club with each of these special charities. "Thanks go out to the Associates, Women’s Initiative Group, The Wine Society, Forever Young Club, and The MAC-PAC for including the CSC in their events and raising funds in support of the CSC. When coupled with monthly contributions by Members and Staff the CSC raised over $30,000!" Learn more about our 2020 charities: Ready Readers: This charity is dedicated to helping preschoolers from lowincome communities learn to love reading through having volunteers read to them out loud, donating high-quality books and offering other literacy-related experiences. Each week, more than 500 people volunteer their time to read to classrooms of excited kids, taking them on journeys while teaching them the fundamentals of reading, inciting a passion that can last a lifetime. The Snow Foundation: When her daughter was diagnosed in 2010, Stephanie Gebel created the Snow Foundation to give a voice to and find a cure for those who suffer from Wolfram syndrome. Despite forced closures in the early months of spring, the golf industry rebounded heavily due to legislators realizing that it was a relatively safe sport to play during the pandemic. On average, the amount of rounds played during July even increased 20% from the previous year according to an article from Golf Inc. Magazine. Sporting stores such as Dick's Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy also reported a significant increase in golfrelated accessories as people discovered or rediscovered their love for the game according to Yahoo Finance. As the snow starts to thaw, MAC Members can look forward to another exciting season of golf. Check out all of the different opportunities offered to MAC Members.

SSM HEALTH PHYSICAL THERAPY

At the Club

For the first time ever, the MAC will offer in-house physical therapy services. SSM Health was announced as the physical therapy provider for the MAC’s West Clubhouse early last year. Athletic director Jeff Tuhro said that having an in-house physical therapy group will allow for a great relationship to form between the physical therapist and the MAC training staff, helping members get the care they need in a more streamlined fashion. Billy Ferris, PT, DPT, has been in practice in Olivette and will now serve MAC Members as the Clubhouses’ physical therapist. Ferris earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. In 2018, he received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from South College in Knoxville, Tennessee. At South College, he learned extensive manual therapy skills to complement properly dosed therapeutic exercise. He believes in providing patients with the tools needed to continue living healthy and pain-free lives long after discharge. He has achieved success in treating a wide range of patient populations including acute/post-surgical pain, injuries involving the upper and lower extremities, and return to work/return to sport. “When Members come to me, they’re going to get first-class service and someone who really cares about their wellbeing,” Ferris said. “I’ll be able to assess acute pain and look for preventative measures or different types of disfunction that might be a problem later down the road. Being an athlete myself, I know how frustrating it can be when you’re sidelined with any type of injury, whether it’s acute trauma or just a nagging injury.” Physical therapy services will be available at MAC West in May. Keep an eye on MAC social media and website for an official date.. F

A c t ion J ac k s on Young Athlete Steps Up His Game with Training Jackson Riney is like a lot of young athletes. The 12-year-old enjoys participating in a variety of sports including basketball, baseball and flag football. What makes him stand out from the crowd is his dedication to training. Twice a week before school, he gets up at 6 a.m. to get in a workout with his personal trainer Chris Lueken. “I like working out at the MAC because there is a variety of equipment and machines that I can use,” said Riney. “I also enjoy that everyone there is nice, helpful, and encouraging.” One misconception is that kids are too young to work with personal trainers. With the guidance of a trainer, the MAC staff can improve young athletes’ agility and injury prevention while building good nutrition and exercise habits. Lueken has been very impressed by the commitment his young pupil. “Working with Jackson is a lot of fun,” said Lueken. “I am proud of the dedication and determination Jackson brings to his 6 a.m. workouts.” Lueken’s approach with Jackson is to build a strong foundation through core strength, mobility and agility components. “The main thing that I like about having a trainer is that he is there to help me, push me and to talk me through my workouts,” said Riney. “Chris always has new exercises to do to keep it fresh.” If you have any questions about youth training or youth group training, please contact Paul Helfrich at 314-539-4453 or Courtney Hutt at 314-539-4495. MAC Massage Spotlight:

Jerrad Benton

JERRAD BENTON

CD: How long have you worked here? JB: Thirteen years. I started in 2008. CD: Was this your first job? JB: No, I started at the mall doing chair massages and worked at a few salons. It was something I just got into right before I graduated high school. So I played in bands and wanted to focus on music so this was something that was more flexible. CD: What training and certifications have you received since you started? JB: I’ve done continual education in several manual therapy techniques such as connective tissue massage and neuromuscular therapy. A couple years back I did a medical massage certification. CD: What does that certification mean? JB: It recognizes me as someone who can do prescribed massage therapy. The benefit of that is that since prescribed massage is a medically necessary massage, so it is potentially covered through your insurance or health savings account. CD: What is your favorite part about working here? JB: Everything, really. I love the Members and my fellow employees. CD: What are your favorite massage techniques to do? JB: I’ve been getting into cupping a lot more. It’s very efficient and takes minimal effort. It increases blood circulation, which helps with muscle recovery by stretching the connective tissues. It is really great for restoring range of motion, pain relief and getting the blood circulating in the cupped area. CD: Are there any new techniques you have been working on?

JB: I’ve been getting into energy work a little bit so I’ve been studying that. It’s something I’ve always been interested in, but had been focused more on structural western massage. This includes reiki or shiatsu or any other eastern massage modalities. CD: What are the benefits of someone who wants to get a massage? JB: There are several benefits. There’s your overall wellbeing. You are releasing endorphins so it makes you feel better. It increases blood circulation, improves digestion, helps relieve pain and restore range of motion with injury. With medical massages, your focus is on chronic pain and injury and post-surgical recovery. CD: What are the most beneficial massages in your opinion? JB: It depends on the client. If you’re in chronic pain, rehabilitative massage like cupping. CD: What dates and times are you available to give Members massages? JB: I’m at both Clubhouses. I’m at the West Clubhouse on Sunday from 10 a.m.-3: 30 p.m. and Monday and Tuesday from 3-7:30 p.m. Then I’m at the Downtown Clubhouse from 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. MAC Hosts Inaugural Mardi Gras Masquerade Party

February proved a popular month to host events at the Club. While the much-anticipated Preservation Foundation Gala was postponed until the fall, this did not stop the MAC from coming together. The MAC decided to host its first Mardi Gras party in recent years. The event started off with a bang as guests were given a hurricane to sip on while registering. Upon walking into the Missouri Room, Members were transported to New Orleans complete with large Venetian masks provided by the Veiled Prophet. This was followed

by a Cajun-themed meal with favorites such as seafood étouffée, gumbo, jambalaya, beniets, king cake and much more. The event also included a 50/50 raffle benefitting the Sports Foundation. At the end of the night, Andy Hillin was the 50/50 raffle winner and Gary and Patti Sextro were named king and queen of the evening. This new event proved to be quite a success, having Members saying the Mardi Gras unofficial slogan " Laissez les bons temps rouler" or "Let the good times roll." F

WHO NEEDS LUCK? MAC Sells Out 1951 St. Patrick's DayHAPPY Bash

Summer!

In the best of Irish traditions, the annual St. Patrick's Dance turned out to be one of the grandest parties of the year. A big crowd of more than 500 Members and guests gathered to celebrate the Irish saint. The evening began with a delicious dinner while Hal Havird and his popular orchestra came on the scene at 9 p.m. and played to a crowded floor until 1 a.m. His many Irish tunes lent gaiety and chame to the enjoyable evening along with vocalist Joan Jennerjahn. The St. Patrick's theme was introduced at the entrance to the Missouri Room where a huge Irish pipe carved out of ice was on display. F
