LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT I
will start my last Cherry Diamond column in a manner similar to my first column in June 2022 by saying that it has been an absolute honor and privilege to serve as the 107th President of the Missouri Athletic Club. During the past year, the MAC and our Members have greatly benefited from the leadership, ingenuity and expertise of my fellow third year Governors: First Vice President, Tracey Beckette; Second Vice President, Justin Fowler; Treasurer, Steve Albart; and Secretary, Chris Swank. I thank these gentlemen for their friendship, sound counsel and unwavering support.
I also thank my fellow Governors from the secondyear class. Later this month, the leadership of the Board will transition to President-elect Neal Perryman and his classmates, Cheri McLaughlin, Mark McClanahan, Mark Niemeyer and newly appointed Governor Aaron Pawlitz. The Club could not ask for a more capable, thoughtful and dedicated group of leaders.
Similarly, I thank the first-year class of Tom Dankenbring, Jodi Pederson, Tim Maynard, Gary Sextro and Jeff Wehmer for being proactive, involved members of the BOG from the start. You have made great contributions to a variety of projects and task forces, including taking the lead in planning our outstanding 120th Anniversary Gala.
A comprehensive list of all the accomplishments of the 2022-2023 Board of Governors is beyond the scope of this column. However, I point to: i) completing capital projects in the Jack Buck Grille, the 1903 Dining Room and the West banquet facilities; ii) a successful unwinding of the Club’s legacy pension plan, iii) embracing civic engagement initiatives, particularly the gym restoration project at the Youth and Family Center; and iv) a renewed focus on Member engagement and Member experience, as a few examples of the Club’s achievements during the past year. I am confident that President-elect Perryman and his “team” will hit the ground running, and I know they will continue to develop and complete projects and initiatives that will provide extraordinary Member experiences.
Although I have enjoyed the title of Club President, the true leader of our Club and the person ultimately responsible for putting words into action is our outstanding CEO and GM Wally Smith. I thank Wally for his patience and understanding in answering questions, listening to ideas and showing me the ropes of the Club business. I am grateful for the time that we have spent together, and I value his mentorship and more importantly his friendship. Wally, thank you again for 12-plus years of service to the MAC. You will be sorely missed when you retire at the end of August.
In connection with Wally’s pending retirement, the BOG and the Search Committee have been hard at work
identifying the next leader of our Club. I am pleased to report that after a comprehensive, nationwide search and a thorough vetting and preliminary interview process, we have identified three (3) extremely qualified candidates who will be visiting the Club in the month of May for final interviews. We are on track for the Search Committee to make its recommendation to the BOG and for the BOG to authorize the extension of an offer for employment to the selected candidate at our last scheduled BOG meeting on May 18. Rest assured that we will continue to keep our Members up-to-date and informed as our GM search comes to a conclusion.
The month of May is always an important and exciting time of year at the Club as we will elect a new class to the Board of Governors. I urge you to take the time to get to know the candidates and to attend the election on the evening of Thursday, May 4. Election night at the Club is a great tradition and I guarantee that you will have a very fun evening.
Before I wrap up by recognizing the Club’s outstanding staff members, I would be remiss If I did not thank my beautiful, talented, brilliant and extremely patient wife, Ashley, for her love and support during this past year. In complete candor, serving as President of the BOG has been extremely rewarding and fulfilling, but it does demand a significant amount of time and attention. I quite simply could not have done it without Ashley’s assistance and encouragement.
Finally, I would like to thank our entire MAC Staff for your support and assistance during my time as President. You have gone out of your way to lend a helpful hand and to welcome my family and I to the Club with a warm smile and a kind greeting. I specifically want to thank Gena Willis. It is not a stretch to say the Board of Governors and our various committees would not function without Gena’s timeliness and attention to detail in preparing agendas, coordinating meeting times and locations, and serving as recording secretary. I also want to recognize and acknowledge the work of Jim Wilson, Monica Ryan and the other members of the Club’s communications team. Thank you for all your work in editing my musings and keeping me on deadline!
Although my time as President is coming to an end, I promise to do all that I can to continue to serve and support our wonderful Club.
I look forward to continuing to see you all at the Club!
Brent Beumer, President Missouri Athletic Club

Leaving a Legacy
HAVE YOU TAKEN YOUR “RMDs” YET FOR 2023?
Anyone 73 years of age or older is required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their tax-deferred accounts (IRAs and 401k) by December 31, 2023, and pay taxes on the distribution.
BUT THERE IS A WAY TO AVOID PAYING TAXES!
You can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRAs to your favorite charities and avoid taxation
The MAC Sports Foundation is a 501(c)(3) entity and is eligible to receive Qualified Charitable Distributions!
Why not decide right now to save taxes this year and help the MAC Sports Foundation or the Charitable Society for Children at the same time?
A QCD is an excellent tax-saving vehicle, but there are rules to be understood and followed.
To find out more about Qualified Charitable Distributions and other giving opportunities, please contact:
LARRY ABSHEER (“LA”) Director of Advancement 314-604-3890 or labsheer@mac-stl.org

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
There is never a dull moment at the Missouri Athletic Club. The Club has been attracting exceptional people throughout its 120-year history, and in April, basketball legend Bill Walton was here for the USBWA College Basketball Awards, and I got to hang out with him for a couple of days.
The thing I love about the MAC is the characters I get to meet. Walton was certainly entertaining on and off the stage. He was so gracious with all our Members, taking photos, signing autographs, and telling stories. After the ceremony, Members and I enjoyed his company in the Jack Buck Grille until we shut it down. Walton promised he would be the last one there and he was! During the special evening, I also had the honor of meeting Purdue’s Zach Edey, the winner of the Men’s Player of the Year Oscar Robertson Trophy. The event was an extraordinary experience for all who attended.
and the Taylor family have stepped up to do something truly special for the city by bringing us this fabulous soccer stadium. Meanwhile, the Cardinals, a mainstay in the St. Louis community, just started their 2023 campaign.
As a reminder, our shuttle service is always a great way to get to these fun city events. Park in the Downtown garage with 24/7 security, grab dinner inside the Clubhouse, then hop on the shuttle to and from your game of choice.
Looking ahead, we have a great new partnership with World Wide Technology Raceway! We have some awesome friends over there. Members will have access to the Enjoy Illinois 300 NASCAR Cup Series race on June 4. The MAC shuttle will transport Members to and from the track just over the river in Madison, Illinois.
Our Club is a place where families come together! We hosted so many excellent families at both of our Clubhouses for Easter celebrations, and we look forward to continuing this tradition at our upcoming Mother’s Day Brunches and Father-Daughter Banquet.
Shout out to Chairman Aaron Pawlitz for lining up a star-studded awards ceremony! His passion for college basketball shined throughout the night. This exciting event filled with legends will continue for years to come, turning into another one of the MAC’s amazing traditions.
Speaking of great people, MAC Executive Assistant Gena Willis just celebrated her 10-year anniversary at the Club. She is the rock star behind the scenes. She keeps it all together. She keeps the Board on track, staff on track, and the hardest job of all, keeping me on track!
There is always something fun going on in and around the MAC! It’s great to see some new activity in the city. The Downtown Clubhouse has been buzzing with Members going to CITY SC and Battlehawks games. Jim Kavanaugh
These traditions have been enriching MAC Members’ lives for generations and as we celebrate the 120th anniversary of our extraordinary Club, there is some topof-the-line merchandise available at both Clubhouses to commemorate the year. Some of these include a collared Nike Dri-Fit shirt with the 120 MAC logo embroidered on it, a Nike hat, and an exclusive whiskey bundle with commemorative glasses etched with the 120 logo.
The MAC is all about fun, and with summer knocking at our door, the West Clubhouse is excited to open the pool and greet kids for a multitude of camps. Remember to also take full advantage of our Dual Membership Program with Glen Echo Country Club. The course is already in great shape for this time of year. The staff is out there and ready to welcome you with open arms.
See you at the Club!
Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

STATEMENT
I have been affiliated with the club since I took Saturday morning classes as a child. My family has been and continues to be active and supportive at all levels. I learned teamwork and accountability working with kids from all over the Bi-State region. These lessons are as important today as they were then. They helped craft an approach to servant leadership that is imperative in todays economy. I have had the good fortune to raise my three children at the club. They have made life long friends and learned lessons that they carry into their professional lives.
I have used my ability to network, motivate, & educate to bring people together and to help expand membership and retention at the club. I truly believe that as members we are the “value added” secret to the clubs enduring success.
I am excited to share my passion for the MAC and its commitment to continuing to being the premiere athletic, dining, & social club in St Louis. Thank you for your support.

I am proud to be nominated to run for the Board of Governors for the MAC. I have numerous fond memories of the MAC growing up and have witnessed a significant transformation of our club facilities and membership first hand. The MAC has always been a place of fellowship and camaraderie in which I am grateful for all the relationships and immeasurable memories I have made over the years.
My goal is to continue the advancements the Club has made in its fitness centers, as well as various other facility improvements, and to ensure its tradition of excellence is continued for generations to come. STATEMENT
I did not grow up in St. Louis, but moved here after graduating from Truman State. I soon joined the MAC when I joined Lewis Rice.
My practice involves representing clients in a variety of sectors, including professional sports teams, real estate development, manufacturing, public safety, higher education, startups, transportation, telecommunications, technology, energy, non-profits, commissions and professional associations. This experience provides me the ability to connect and work with people from a broad background, similar to the MAC membership, staff and employees.
As a person who both lives and works downtown, I recognize what an important element the downtown clubhouse is to downtown’s success. As the last chairman of Downtown St. Louis, Inc., I have the relationships with both political and business leaders to help the MAC continue to be a leader downtown.
Thank you for your consideration, David W. Sweeney

MAC Book Club Summer Readings
Thursday, May 11 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse
Wednesday, June 14 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse
On May 11, the Book Club shifts its focus to historical fiction as Janet Mug guides a discussion of The Rose Code: A Novel by Kate Quinn.
As 1940s England prepares to fight the Nazis, three women answer the call to the mysterious country estate Bletchley Park, where the best minds in Britain train to break German military codes. War, loss and the impossible pressure of secrecy tear the three apart. As the royal wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1947 whips post-war Britain into a fever, the three friendsturned-enemies are reunited by a mysterious encrypted letter –the key to which lies buried in the long-ago betrayal that destroyed their friendship.
On Wednesday, note the day change, June 14, Pam Gershuny will guide us through The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb.
Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist and won’t let anything stand in his way. When he discovers that his beat-up family fiddle is a priceless Stradivarius, all his dreams suddenly seem within reach, and Ray and his violin take the world by storm. But the violin is stolen on the eve of the renowned and cutthroat Tchaikovsky Competition. As the competition approaches, Ray must not only reclaim his precious violin but prove to himself—and the world—there has always been a truly great musician within him.

MHC Discusses the American Revolution
Tuesday, May 23 F 11:30 a.m. Downtown Clubhouse
Join us on May 25 for a Military History Club meeting focused on the American Revolution. We are excited to welcome Roman Beuc, a frequent remote participant, who will discuss the role played in the war by Lord George Sackville-Germain. As Secretaryof-State for the Colonies in prime minister Lord North’s ministry, Sackville-Germain managed the war effort for Britain and will always be remembered as one of the men who lost America for Great Britain.
Mr. Beuc brings a wealth of experience to the discussion. After a 45-year missile guidance and control engineering career, he retired from Boeing. During his career, he worked on the Harpoon and Tomahawk anti-ship missile programs and several
experimental flight test programs for ramjets, scramjets and hypersonic vehicles that were flight tested from Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg Air Force Base. Since retiring, he has volunteered as a docent at the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Saint Louis Mercantile Library and formerly at the Pulitzer and Contemporary Art Museums as well as the City Garden. Besides art history, he has always had a strong interest in political and military history, especially of the 18th century.
To attend this event, please register online at mac-stl.org/ events. Wars always have at least two sides, and we look forward to exploring both perspectives of the American Revolution with Mr. Beuc.

THE MAC
WHERE ST. LOUIS LEGENDS AND LEADERS MEET
As the MAC celebrates its 120th anniversary, the Club looks back at its long and storied history in the St. Louis community. Since its establishment in 1903, the Club has been a hub for social, athletic and cultural events, attracting exceptional people from diverse backgrounds and professions. Its legacy is marked by its commitment to leadership, service and excellence.
Throughout its early years, the MAC saw the likes of Charles A. Lindbergh, the Gemini astronauts, and of course, the athletes of the 1904 Olympics. These figures not only brought prestige to the Club but also contributed to the cultural and social fabric of St. Louis. Lindbergh is a significant figure in St. Louis’ history, having completed his famous solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927. He was a frequent visitor to the Club and is said to have celebrated his engagement to his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, at the Downtown Clubhouse.
In 1916, the National Democratic Convention brought several distinguished visitors to the Downtown Clubhouse. The convention marked a significant moment in St. Louis’ history, and the MAC played a significant role in its success. The Club’s commitment to cultural enrichment is exemplified by its involvement in forming the
St. Louis Municipal Opera in 1918, now known as The Muny. According to Club lore, MAC Members had a hand in creating this iconic St. Louis institution. The Muny has been a fixture of St. Louis summers for over a century, and the MAC’s contribution to its establishment reflects the Club’s enduring legacy of supporting the arts.
The roster of sports personalities, dignitaries, entertainers and heroes who graced the Club in the 1960s alone is tremendous. The MAC also held forum speakers, such as CBS news commentator Harry Reasoner and Newsweek columnist Kenneth G. Crawford. Other prominent figures include Stan-the-Man Musial, Joe Garagiola, Jack Buck, Olympic champion Bob Richards, Carl O. Brauer, Henry Youngman and Guy Lombardo, just to name a few. Many local legends became Members themselves. Stan Musial was made an MAC Member in 1958; President Harry S. Truman was made an honorary Member in 1946; Jackie Joyner-Kersee in 1988.
The MAC’s rich and multifaceted history in the St. Louis community has made it the landmark it is today. Its legacy is marked by its commitment to leadership, service, and excellence within its walls and beyond. As the MAC evolves and adapts to changing times, the MAC Speaker Series is continuing the tradition of attracting local and national figures to the Club.

MACSpeaker Series THE THE POWER OF CONVERSATION
The Missouri Athletic Club has a long history of hosting extraordinary regional and national figures. This tradition continues today with several annual events, and more recently, the MAC Speaker Series.
The idea for the Speaker Series committee began on a Board of Governors retreat to the University Club of Milwaukee in 2020. To enhance Member benefit and engagement, Past President Dan Lett and the BOG believed the Speaker Series committee could draw high-profile speakers to the Club to align and enhance the MAC brand while engaging Members. From this planning came the mission statement for the MAC Speaker Series:
The MAC Speaker Series is an exclusive event for Members to actively engage with leaders impacting Community, Sports, Business and Leadership.
The Speaker Series committee consists of 12-15 Members, Governors and Past Governors of the MAC. Among this committee are Co-Chairs Governor Albart and Governor Swank. Since its inception, the Speaker Series has presented numerous impactful speakers:
F Five first-round draft picks of the 2016 NHL Draft from St. Louis (Matthew Tkachuk, Brady Tkachuk, Clayton Keller, Logan Brown, Luke Kunin and Trent Frederic)
F Karl Rove, Former White House Sr. Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff
F Bob Chapman, Chairman and CEO of Barry-Wehmiller
F Bob O’Loughlin, Chairman and CEO of Lodging Hospitality Management
F Kathleen Mazzarella, Chairman, President and CEO of Graybar
F Bradley Carnell, St. Louis CITY SC Head Coach
F Taylor Twellman, Lead Soccer Analyst on Apple TV
F Maxine Clark, Founder of Build-ABear; Dr. Mary Mason, CEO & Founder of Little Medical School; and Jillian Tedesco, Founder & CEO of fit-flavors
F Jim McKelvey, Founder of Square (May 24)
“The ability to shake hands and interact with such distinguished leaders is something you can only get at the MAC,”
states Co-Chair Governor Albart. “It’s an invaluable experience to have intimate conversation with people impacting our community at a high level.”
Speaker Series events provide several benefits and engagement opportunities to MAC Members. These exclusive discussions create an exceptional experience with intellectual dialogue, professional development and growth. Access to such impactful national and regional leaders is one of the many reasons the MAC Speaker Series has succeeded.
The committee is always looking for ideas and connections from Members to continue welcoming high-profile speakers. To contact the MAC Speaker Series committee with ideas for future events, email speakerseries@mac-stl.org.

Address Your Team’s Professional Development Needs, at No Cost to MAC Members
Steve Albart, Regional President, St. Louis Region Enterprise Bank & Trust
This year, we’re celebrating 20 years of Enterprise University, the business training course series presented by Enterprise Bank & Trust.
When we established the program in 2003, we created the program to provide no-cost training courses for business leaders and their teams in St. Louis. More than 150 people showed up for the first class, and we soon realized that we had tapped into a need among the business community. At that moment, we knew we were filling a need that our local business community craved: real-word business knowledge, actionable takeaways and an opportunity to connect with like-minded leaders who are driven to better their business — just like you.
The program has always been one-of-a-kind, but since then it has grown and evolved to now offer a lineup of more than 30 virtual, 90-minute live courses on a biannual basis. In its 20-year history, Enterprise University has welcomed more than 33,000 course registrants, representing business professionals across the country who return year after year to continue learning new skills.
Enterprise University courses cover management and leadership, finance, human resources, sales and marketing, and other trending topics that address current business challenges. There is a course for everyone, from the CEO looking for new perspectives as she revisits her strategic plan, to the manager who wants to strengthen their team and improve efficiencies, to the young professional who wants to build a strong foundation and find ways to contribute more to his team.
The spring semester course lineup was just announced, and registration is now open!
More than 30 courses will be offered by the time our semester
concludes on May 16. The classes are taught by experts in their field who offer strategies and ideas that teams can implement right away to stay ahead in a competitive environment.
HERE IS A PREVIEW OF COURSES COMING UP THIS SPRING:
n Building and Developing a Successful Sales Team
n All Aboard! Governance and Fundraising Best Practices for Board Leadership
n Beyond Cost Segregation: Accelerated Depreciation and Expensing Strategies
n You Don’t Have to Do It Alone: Resources for Minority-Owned Businesses
n Who We Are Is How We Lead: How Your Values Can Create Courage
In addition to signing up for courses that help you bring your business to the next level, many business owners incorporate Enterprise University as part of their talent development programs to help develop employees. The classes can be a great way for you to offer no-cost professional development opportunities to your team, as workforce development and retention are more important than ever.
You can browse this semester’s coursebook and reserve your spot in one class, or all that interest you, and I encourage MAC members to share Enterprise University with your colleagues. Register now at www.enterprisebank.com/eu.
In addition to spring programming, select Enterprise University courses from previous semesters are available on demand on the Enterprise University website to watch at your own convenience. Enterprise University helps MAC members think strategically, better their business and build community. We hope you take advantage of the spring semester of Enterprise University. See you this spring!

FIND BALANCE WITH THE MAC YOGA & BARRE TEAM
The MAC wellness team understands that a well-rounded fitness routine benefits both physical and mental health, which is why Members can find a yoga class that suits their needs at either Clubhouse. From classes focusing on breathing and meditation to increasing strength and flexibility, MAC yoga and barre instructors help Members at any experience level.
No matter what step you’re on in your fitness journey, practicing yoga and barre benefits the body and the mind in several ways. Yoga is excellent for increasing flexibility and stretching your muscles before or after a workout. For those looking to tone their muscles, barre exercises are a great way to increase strength without using machines. Yoga is known for improving balance and strength, as well as relieving stress and enhancing mental health. These classes
are designed for any Member looking for a well-rounded fitness experience as well as beginners interested in adding something new to their routine.
For Members looking to practice yoga at the Downtown Clubhouse, classes can be booked with Megan Mahley. Her classes range from vigorous, fitness-based movements in a hightemperature setting to classes focusing on balance and alignment. The West Clubhouse wellness team provides classes seven days a week with five instructors on staff: Bethany Bogosian, Christi Gleason, Cathy Gresick, Nicki Hamrah, Natalie Jacobs and Chelsea Moryc.
Visit mac-stl.org/Fitness_Wellness to learn more about how the MAC’s yoga and barre options can enhance your fitness journey.
24 F CHERRY DIAMOND MAC WELLNESS
The Missouri Athletic Club wellness team provides numerous yoga and barre classes to Members at any experience level.
MARGARET LOUVIER – BETHANY BOGOSIAN’S CLIENT
Bethany makes yoga so enjoyable with her happy attitude and with a variety of poses that she frequently changes. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she watches form carefully which is very important.
JULIA BAGY – CHRISTI GLEASON’S CLIENT
Joining the Hot Pilates class, especially after a long day of work sitting at a desk, allows me to focus and reset. I feel stronger, more aligned and less stressed.
SHERRI CONNORS – CATHY GRESICK’S CLIENT
[Barre Fusion] really helps focus on proper alignment and technique. Cathy can easily modify for each person while challenging by showing levels of difficulty. It’s great cross-training for other sports and fitness classes.
HARRA COWLEY – NICKI HAMRAH’S CLIENT
I have been taking Nicki’s Power Yoga class for a year now. I have been doing hot Power Yoga since 2016, and I can say that I have been more challenged in this last year than many years before. The flow sequence requires both mental and physical focus while also building strength and flexibility. This class is one I look forward to attending every week knowing it is going to build more strength and mental resilience within my practice. It’s a can’t-miss.
DEBBY MURPHY – NATALIE JACOBS’S CLIENT
While recovering from a fall in which I broke a lot of bones in both feet, ankles and legs, I started taking Natalie’s yoga classes as a complement to the physical therapy I was receiving. While the therapy sessions ended, the most complete and enduring part of my healing was made possible by Natalie’s classes. I think I benefitted from the frequency of the classes and the range of exercises demanded, but I know it was also because Natalie helped to make the challenging effort fun and took a real interest in my personal progress and recovering even while providing personalized attention to the other recipients. I also have taken Natalie’s advice to avoid painting from tall ladders.
FRANK NIESEN – MEGAN MAHLEY’S CLIENT
Megan is very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and friendly. I have taken all of her yoga classes and will continue to. Each class is different and by that I mean, each class will have elements incorporated into it that, likely, you have not seen before. Her classes vary in intensity from challenging to gentle and they concentrate on healing, regardless of the class. I have never had one of Megan’s classes where I haven’t felt better in mind and body afterward than I had felt before the class. It seems to me that persons of all ages and abilities, including those with some physical limitations would benefit from Megan’s yoga classes.
JENNY DEMBIEC – CHELSEA MORYC’S CLIENT
Chelsea is hands down one of THE best instructors, and the MAC and its Members are so lucky to have her. She is a body/life changer that wants you to improve each and every class! She helps you reach your fitness goals and helps set new ones. Her Power Yoga, Yoga Sculpt, and Tone Time classes will chisel and challenge. Her power yoga class, especially, will kick anyone’s butt! Promise! She is encouraging, motivating and the best of the best. We need shirts saying, ‘Chiseled by Chelsea!’

AN EGG-CELLENT EASTER AT THE MAC
The Missouri Athletic Club was delighted to celebrate another Easter weekend with wonderful Members and their families. On Saturday, April 8, families gathered at the West Clubhouse for the annual Easter Egg Hunt to kick off the holiday weekend.
This year marks 20 years of the egg hunt tradition – with over 150 kids in attendance, the 2023 egg hunt was a smashing success!
On Sunday, April 9, the West and Downtown Clubhouses welcomed Members to a special Easter Brunch. Members
enjoyed a variety of delectable dishes and delicious desserts at both locations. The Easter bunny made an appearance at both Clubhouses to take photos with the children and their families. Overall, the MAC’s Easter festivities made for a very ‘hoppy’ weekend!

Women Entrepreneurs Share Insights at the MAC Speaker Series
On Tuesday, April 4, the Women Business Owners Roundtable (WBOR) presented an MAC Speaker Series event featuring panelists Maxine Clark, Dr. Mary Mason and Jillian Tedesco. Members and guests filled the Art Lounge to enjoy a lunch buffet and conversation among three accomplished women entrepreneurs.
Maxine Clark is the founder and former CEO of Build-A-Bear Workshop®. Her current venture is the Delmar DevINE™, working to transform the historic St. Luke’s Hospital into a multi-use real estate development. Dr. Mary Mason is the founder of Little Medical School, a program that immerses children interested in healthcare through the power of role-play. Jillian Tedesco is the founder and CEO of fit-flavors, providing portion-controlled
healthy meals and nutrition counseling to the St. Louis community. The three panelists discussed how to go about starting a business, the challenges one may face along the way and how to plan for success in leadership.
The event was a great success, with attendees leaving inspired and motivated to take their businesses to the next level. The panelists were all very inspiring and shared their stories with honesty and humor. The audience was engaged and asked many thoughtful questions.
The WBOR provides a valuable opportunity for female entrepreneurs to connect with each other, learn from each other’s experiences, and build a supportive community of peers. For any women MAC Member interested in connecting with like-minded female business owners, contact Governor Cheri McLaughlin at cheri@sparksmilling.com to learn more about joining WBOR.

BILL WALTON THROWS IT DOWN AT THE USBWA COLLEGE BASKETBALL AWARDS
The Best from the 2022-23 Season Honored at the MAC
Basketball legend Bill Walton returned to St. Louis on Wednesday, April 12 as the featured speaker for the USBWA College Basketball Awards. Fifty years ago in the Lou, Bill Walton delivered what is considered the greatest game in NCAA Tournament finals history when he scored 44 points, making 21 of 22 shot attempts to lead UCLA to the national championship. The three-time Oscar Robertson Trophy winner is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and is currently one of the most colorful commentators in the game.
KMOX Sports Director Tom Ackerman and ESPN Radio’s Michelle Smallmon co-hosted this year’s banquet. The winningest coach in Notre Dame history Mike Brey was in attendance receiving the “Good Guy” Award. Florida State’s Ta’Niya Latson won the Tamika Catchings Women’s Freshman of the Year Award.
Marquette Coach Shaka Smart received the Henry Iba Men’s Coach of the Year Award. Purdue’s Zach Edey took home the Men’s Player of the Year Oscar Robertson Trophy.
The evening began with a media hour in the fifth-floor gym for the honorees and Walton. There, reporters from television stations, radio stations and the Post-Dispatch were able to speak with the Missouri Athletic Club’s distinguished guests. Following the conclusion of the media hour, the night continued
in the Crystal Room, where Smallmon moderated a Q&A with the college coaches in attendance including Smart, Brey, and Florida State Coach Brooke Wyckoff who accompanied Latson to the awards.
The main event was held in the Missouri Room starting at 7:45 p.m. The program went as planned with a surprise for Coach Brey who started his college coaching career as an assistant for Duke under Coach Mike Krzyzewski. The USBWA honored Coach K with the Dean E. Smith Award. Coach K sent in an acceptance video that also congratulated Coach Brey on receiving the “Good Guy” Award.
Once all the honorees had their moment to shine, Bill Walton’s lively personality took center stage for nearly an hour. He covered a multitude of topics including his childhood, getting recruited by John Wooden and his decision to get into broadcasting. He closed the night by telling the audience to meet him at the Jack Buck Grille!
The strong support of the Membership and the sponsors made the event possible, and the MAC looks forward to continuing to grow this event into another great annual sports banquet on the Club’s social calendar.

Quotes OF THE NIGHT
“Missouri Athletic Club, yeah. Where dreams become reality, where we come to grow, and where the deal goes down.” — Bill Walton
“There’s no one who has represented our sport, the coaching profession, better than Mike [Brey] as far as being a good guy, not only with his community, his school, and his team, but with all of you.” — Coach Mike Krzyzewski
“Everyone coming into college wants to experience things like this, and I’m just blessed to be here.” — Ta’Niya Latson
“Maybe because I started as a high school coach and teacher, my demeanor with young people comes across as I’m a good guy, and you know what, I’ll take that.” — Coach Mike Brey
“If I had had a place like the Missouri Athletic Club in my life, I could have done something with myself.” — Bill Walton
“We would trade any award for just one more win.” — Coach Shaka Smart
“Talk is cheap, vision is true. When life looks like easy street, there’s danger at your door, and there are no rewards for settling for something that you don’t want.” — Bill Walton
“It’s good to get somebody with no habits instead of bad habits.” — Purdue Coach Matt Painter about Zach Edey
“I played hockey, I played baseball growing up and then some things happened, and it didn’t work out. So, I went to basketball, and I think it was a pretty good decision.” — Zach Edey
“We had high hopes for her, but she’s got to be the one that goes out and does it. Just so proud of how she handled all the accolades, the pressure that came along with it once she started scoring.” — Coach Brooke Wyckoff said of Ta’Niya Latson
“In 23 years, you get put on the mat a couple of times, you better figure out a way to come off.”
— Coach Mike Brey
