LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

O

n May 14, 2020, my first day as President of the MAC, both Clubhouses were closed, locked and utilities turned off. We had no athletics, no dining and no social events. Our Members, like most of the world, experienced a tremendous amount of uncertainty in their lives. On the other hand, despite the Clubhouse closures, the MAC carried on. Our Members, who understand the true value of our Club, remained committed, stayed connected and waited patiently as the pandemic lingered. Several weeks would pass before local orders would allow us to reopen the clubhouses even in a limited capacity. Yet, Club spirit never wavered. I said in my first column that we would focus on three things: our people, our Members and our future. Closing the Clubhouses, while a difficult decision, was the easy part. Furloughing nearly all of our people was gut-wrenching, but necessary. As it turned out, government relief programs, along with the generosity of our Members, allowed our employees to sustain during the closures. Reopening proved a more challenging task. I commend Wally Smith and his leadership team, working in lockstep with the Board of Governors, for making resourceful, and often difficult, decisions related to Club operations, and working tirelessly to make the Clubhouses safe and secure and position the Club to weather the COVID-19 storm. We thank our employees for their sacrifice and returning to enthusiastically provide premier service to our Members. The MAC benefitted from a strong group of Governors, led by my fellow third-year classmates Gene Frederic, Cheri McLaughlin, Jeff Moore and Nat Walsh. These outstanding leaders focused on the critical issues facing the Club, relying on their experiences and expertise to assist Wally and staff during an unprecedented situation. We informed our membership through frequent communication and virtual connections and engaged the community through our civic presence and diversity and inclusion initiatives. We made financial concessions to our Members where possible and reduced operating costs where appropriate to balance the need to sustain the MAC for the future and to lessen the impact on our Members whose club experience was adversely affected. Our membership is steadily increasing this calendar year, and we are nearing the membership level from one year ago when the pandemic dented our membership. I am pleased that these efforts, along with some unexpected government assistance, place us in a solid financial position. I also thank the other Members of the Board. We had

4 F CHERRY DIAMOND

a great team that coalesced around the challenges we faced and solidified strong friendships. The secondyear class, made up of Julie Ahrling, Matt Gross, Angie Minges, Duke Niedringhaus and Aaron Pawlitz, contributed significantly to our success this past year. The first-year class of Steve Albart, Traci Beckette, Brent Beumer, Justin Fowler and Chris Swank jumped in and made their presence felt, offering ideas and solutions, and helped lead our task forces. The Board also kept its eye on the Club’s longterm future, confirming our mission and vision and articulating our core values. As the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel brightens and we revert to our regular activities and experiences at the Club, this month we will transition Board leadership to Angie Minges. Not only is she the first woman in the history of the MAC to hold the position of President, Angie is also a strategist and brand developer. Her skill set arrives at a perfect time as we imagine the future of the Club. We have 10 outstanding candidates for the Board that will form an incredible freshman class. During this last year, we implemented a new strategic planning framework and kicked off a branding initiative that will allow Angie and the new Board to hit the ground running on capital projects and programs focused on benefitting our current and future members as well as promoting the MAC to the broader community. While the journey of this past year proved more of an adventure than I anticipated, it was my pleasure to serve the MAC during this chapter. The MAC has been through a lot in its 118-year history. COVID 19 will not be the last challenge it confronts. As with prior challenges, together, our Club continues to stand the test of time. And for me, the pandemic showed the strength of the MAC and highlighted the true value of our Club, a place to play, eat, drink and enjoy the relationships with our fellow Members. While in many ways the pandemic stretched us apart, it also revealed the strength of our bonds, made us more adaptable and helped hone our purpose. Thank you all for your support, particularly to my wife Polly and my family. I look forward to continuing to serve and support the MAC tradition. F

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER hat a difference a year makes. This time last year, a global pandemic was playing havoc with our lives. Like most restaurants and businesses around the country, the Club was forced to shut our doors as we tried to navigate through an uncertain future. On May 18, 2020, the Club reopened under an evolving array of health protocols in the City and County. Life as we knew it was turned upside down as we began to live in a “new normal.” Spring is in the air now at the MAC and a lot that we missed out on last year is starting to return. It is starting to feel like the “old normal” again, which is welcome news! Baseball and hockey games with fans in the stands are back! The MAC shuttle is taking fans to and from the games. On April 19, COVID-19 vaccine eligibility opened to all Americans. Many St. Louisans had previously been driving long distances to get their vaccines, but on April 7, FEMA opened up an eight-week mass vaccination site at The Dome at America’s Center. This location – just across the street from our Downtown Clubhouse – enabled many of our employees and Members to get their vaccines in a quick and efficient manner. The majority of our employees have now been vaccinated, with more scheduled to get it in the near future. In talking to our Members in recent weeks, many have gotten their vaccines as well. Members are increasingly returning to enjoy a wide range of activities and gatherings. I recently talked to a group that has a regular card game at MAC West and each member of the group had each been vaccinated. This is great to hear as we continue our journey back to “normal!” I have enjoyed seeing more and more familiar faces at our two Clubhouses. Some of the great traditional MAC events like Good Fellowship Day have recently been held. In April, our fantastic Apollos put on a show for the first time since 2019. And in May, Members will select a new five-person class to the Board of Governors. Last year, the election was held online while the Club was closed, but this year inperson voting and the famed gauntlet returns. Head down to your Club on May 6 to enjoy this special day

W

of MAC camaraderie. The pandemic understandably brought a lot of uncertainty to the personal and professional lives of our Members and as a result some took a leave of absence over this past year. But the past few months have seen a lot of great news for our Membership team! We brought in 25 new Members in March alone, along with bringing six back from resigned status and 45 back from leave of absence! The numbers continue to trend positively, and we cannot wait to welcome these new and returning Members to their Club. The Club has navigated this year-long era of Zoom meetings and calls. Technology has proven to be a great tool to keep us connected to the MAC, but at our heart, we are a social Club where in-person meetings and celebrations are valued. We remain committed to providing a healthy environment for our employees and Members, so come on out and enjoy your Club. We will continue to do our part to follow protocols while looking forward to local governments further easing restrictions. Recently, the County lifted the mask mandate for tennis and pickleball players. We are hopeful of more positive protocol developments as we head toward summer. I know our MAC families are eagerly awaiting the opening of the pool on Saturday, May 29! The spirit of the Missouri Athletic Club has stood the test of time. Since 1903, our Members and guests have taken part in the time-honored traditions of the Club and celebrated some of life’s biggest moments together. Time and again, the Club has proven to be resilient in the face of challenges. Within the clubhouse walls, our Members have continuously fostered a spirit of camaraderie and friendship that has endured. Enjoy your Club and spread the word… it’s a great time to be a Missouri Athletic Club Member! See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Kurt Mungenast Dealer Principal & Owner St. Louis Acura

The last name “Mungenast” rings a bell for many in the St. Louis region – and with good reason. The car dealership family has enjoyed several decades of success in the area, and two of its branches are headed up by Kurt Mungenast, an MAC Member and owner of St. Louis Acura and Alton Toyota. Mungenast and his family have been Members of the MAC for nearly two decades, joining in 2003 so Kurt and his children could attend Master Shin’s judo classes. Though it was just that aspect of the MAC that kickstarted their involvement, the Mungenast family’s Club interests expanded the more they learned about the amenities and activities they could be part of. “My children enjoyed the summer camps and swim team when they were younger and now use the newly expanded gym regularly,” Kurt said. “I’ve enjoyed Paul’s bootcamp workouts, Christie’s yoga classes, Caroline’s spin classes and Chris’ personal training with my wife, Katie, is the latest way we are enjoying the Club.” Mungenast grew up in House Springs and then moved to the Lindbergh School District for eighth grade. After attending Lindbergh High School, Mungenast went on to attend Saint Louis University and completed the United States Marine Corps’ Platoon Leader Class during the summers. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps in early 1991, married his wife Katie in May and reported for duty at Quantico, Virginia in June. Over the course of the following years, the Mungenast family would grow by two and relocate several times – from Florida to Texas back to Florida to North Carolina to Hawaii. During his time in these places, Mungenast learned to fly military airplanes and helicopters. Following Hawaii, the whole family moved to Okinawa, Japan and began operations with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, Special Operations Capable. He served in Korea and sailed through the Taiwan Straits during this time as a peacekeeping force. In 1998, the Mungenast family (which had grown by two more children) left Okinawa and returned to the family automotive business in St. Louis. Kurt rejoined the military a year later, this time with the Missouri Army National Guard. He left in 2003 to become a partner at Alton Toyota but promised to return if the 35th Combat Aviation Brigade deployed to combat. The Mungenast family welcomed two more sons in 2002 and 2006, rounding out the family with a total of one daughter and five sons. Mungenast ran North County Hyundai from 2007 to 2013. He served

on many boards locally and regionally before discovering that the 35th Combat Aviation Brigade had just deployed to Kuwait and was scheduled to deploy again in 2018. Mungenast began flying Blackhawks and volunteered to lead a force of four helicopters to the U.S. Virgin Islands for recovery and stabilization following Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. He and his force received Humanitarian Service Medals for their efforts. He deployed to Taji, Iraq with the mission of stabilizing Iraq against the threat of ISIS and was awarded the Air Medal with combat “C” for his accomplishments. After a year-long deployment, Mungenast returned to Missouri and was selected for Lieutenant Colonel, commanding the 229th Multifunction Medical Battalion in Fulton with companies in Springfield and Jefferson Barracks. He now owns St. Louis Acura and Alton Toyota and employs 150 teammates. St. Louis Acura is the nation’s only 29-time Acura Precision Team winner for customer satisfaction and finished last year No. 21 out of 277 Acura dealers nationwide and No. 2 in the Midwest. “Having long-tenured team leaders (nine of our 90 associates have over 25 years with my company) that maintain and cultivate a culture of caring about St. Louis Acura and its reputation is the foundation upon which everything else is built daily,” Mungenast said. “We firmly believe in becoming “Better than Ever” every day in how we think, how we communicate and how we do what we do.” Though much of his life has been dedicated to military service and the family business, Mungenast is most proud of watching his children grow into the young adults they are today. He attributes much of their growth in physical fitness as young people to their experiences at the MAC. “To watch my children push past a physical threshold and build a foundation of confidence leaves a lasting memory,” Mungenast said. “These experiences (especially with Master Shin) served my sons well while wrestling in high school.” Along with their children, Kurt and Katie have also taken their fitness to the next level at the MAC. The dynamic duo participate in personal training with Chris Lueken at the West Clubhouse and speak highly of their time with him. “Committing to a personal trainer would never have been a consideration, but I decided to give it a try to support Katie’s commitment to improve her health,” Mungenast said. “I needed to overcome some previous injuries to get ready for a new Army physical fitness test, so I asked Chris for his help and he has been incredible. First, he listened to what my limitations were and taught me to use TRX exercises that really stretched and strengthened my shoulder muscles. Secondly, his holistic approach of including diet tips, aerobic and anaerobic activities and agility stretching techniques to achieve total body health is exactly the external motivation I needed.” F

APRIL 2021 F 9

SECOND QUARTER FINANCIAL REPORT s a supplement to my quarterly financial reports, below is a summary of where the Club stands financially through the first seven months of our fiscal year, September through March. Our Member headcount in March was 2,150, compared to 2,393 last March. Factoring in the Member concessions, our year-to-date dues revenue was $730,000 less favorable than last year. For the seven months, the Club generated $3,800,000 of operating revenue which was $940,000 less favorable than budget, mainly in Rooms and Food and Beverage at both Clubhouses. This is $3,080,000 less than last year’s revenue for the same period. On the positive side, Tennis and West Pro Shop revenues have been better than anticipated. As a result of these lower revenues, our operating departments collectively posted a yearto-date loss of $1,080,000, compared to last year’s loss of $30,000. On a positive note, we have experienced a positive variance of $195,000 in Repairs and Utilities compared to budget, $140,000 in General Clubhouse expenses, and $120,000 in Administrative and General expenses. With the expansion of the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC), we now know that the Club qualifies for the credits through the second quarter of calendar

A

year 2021. We have recognized over $1,000,000 in ERTC credits through the end of March. As a result, the Club has experienced positive operating cash flow of $1,260,000 year to date. This is nearly $1,165,000 better than budget, and $140,000 better than last year. Looking ahead through July, we anticipate our Member headcount to increase due to the return of many Members who were on leave of absence over the past year. Overnight room revenue is projected to remain soft as is banquet revenue, while expenses should continue to trend under budget. We will also have the benefit of the ERTC through June which will give a boost to cash flow. As you have likely noticed, the Food and Beverage Minimum was reinstated after a full year of being on hold. Remember, there are numerous opportunities to utilize the many Food & Beverage venues around the Club. Enjoy all the MAC has to offer in a safe, clean environment. Your Club is open and ready to serve you! F

Spring is in the air, and security improvements continue to be made at the MAC! In late March, the Club saw the arrival of the new parking machines, which enable Members to enter and exit the garage via automated license plate readers. Around the same time, the last of the new exterior security cameras was installed, giving the MAC security team more all-encompassing views of the streets surrounding the Downtown Clubhouse. Members arriving to the Downtown Clubhouse in the evenings may have also noticed that new lights were installed over the walkway between the parking garage and the Lucas Street entrance, aiding visibility and providing a more comfortable pathway between the two buildings. USBWA Honors College Basketball’s Best In 2018, the Missouri Athletic Club and the United States Basketball Writers Association teamed up to host the annual College Basketball Awards banquet at the MAC. The event was an immediate slam dunk with Club Members and sponsors who stepped up in the first two years of the banquet to make it one of the highlights on the Club’s social calendar. The COVID pandemic cut short last year’s college basketball season and this year’s banquet was not held. The USBWA did name award winners this year, even though there was no awards banquet. Serving UP Smiles “It is said that tennis is a lifetime sport, and I am proud to know a particular Member who is taking this to heart and proving it is true!” said Director of Tennis Kim Steinmetz. Lois Criscione has been playing tennis on the MAC indoor tennis courts since 1972 when they were under the roof of what was originally Town & Country Racquet Club. Since 1972, Criscione has been part of at least one weekly game and can be found on court number five on Tuesday mornings most weeks of the year. She still has what it takes to win too, although she has recently admitted to being in a slump. When she told her son that she wasn’t winning very much, he commented, “It’s not enough that you’re still playing, you want to WIN too?” Criscione laughed as she said this, and continued, “A friend of mine says, ‘If you’re not wanting to win, you may as well hang up your racquet!’” Criscione smiled. She does want to win, that is one of the things that keeps her motivated to play. The other thing is the friendships, which carried beyond the court and have lasted over the years. She mentioned over a dozen women with whom she has played through the years, sharing a bit about some of them. One of her stories was of Sally Bakula, who started the Kirkwood Tennis League. Bakula and her husband, Stew, who passed away in 2015, started their MAC Membership in 1956. The Bakulas and their three children were avid tennis players. In 1967, Bakula recruited players, devised a scoring system, organized and lead the tennis league at the Kirkwood courts. That first week, there were only four players, however, by the end of the summer, the league had quickly grown to 108 participants! Bakula called this her "claim to fame" and indeed it is a great life accomplishment! Within two years the league had 200 tennis fanatics playing each week with 100 on the waiting list, and it is still going strong today. Players talk about how great that league is, but little do they know they have Bakula to thank! In 1972, Bakula was a founding member of Town & Country, which gave her group the opportunity to play during the winter as well. Although a torn rotator cuff took Bakula off the tennis courts in 2000, she now plays bridge at the MAC. Criscione also spoke of Mary Dee Merenda as a prominent member of their group. Merenda is a go-getter who started tennis at the age of 34, just a few

months after Town & Country RC opened. Of course, at that time, she was not ready for Criscione's level of play, yet she jumped right in with another group and became a weekly player. Shortly after that, she grew to a bi-weekly player. Then, she also joined the ladies interclub team. Merenda became the organizer of her weekly games and she said tennis is what keeps her young. This story of long-term tennis players goes to show that tennis is indeed a lifetime sport and a game for a healthy life where lasting friendships are formed. F

Metabolic Assessments at the MAC METABOLIC ASSESSMENTS An active metabolic assessment aims to help you make the most of your workout and kick-start weight loss if you've hit a plateau. This cardio-based assessment determines your specific heart-rate zones and how well your body burns carbohydrates and fats to fuel your exercise. Work smarter not harder!

RESTING METABOLIC ASSESSMENTS Resting metabolic rate testing shows how many calories your body burns at rest, giving you the data you need to plan successful weight loss, weight gain, or weight maintenance plan designed to succeed. We will measure the calories your body needs to sustain function while at rest. Contact Paul Helfrich at 314-539-4453 (West) or Courtney Hutt at 314-539-4495 (Downtown) for more information. F

MAC FOUNDATIONS CORNER | Leaving a Legacy

YOUR BENEFICIARIES: Do You Know Who They Are? Do your Will, Trust and/or Beneficiary Designations on your investments correctly reflect your wishes for division and distribution of your assets among your heirs and beneficiaries if you pass away? When was the last time you thought about who your beneficiaries are? Are your Beneficiary Designations up to date? Many times, we forget to designate a beneficiary on our mutual funds, our IRAs, our 401(k) plans, and other investments. And often our Beneficiary Designations should be updated but we never get around to doing it. Do it now! Because sometimes “later” becomes “never.” In order to leave a lasting legacy at your club, please consider designating the MAC or the MAC Preservation Foundation as a beneficiary on one of your retirement/investment accounts, or on a life insurance policy, or in your will or trust. And if you do, please let us know so that we can welcome you as a member of the MAC Legends Society.

What Are the Next Steps? 1. Contact Cynthia Goudy, Director of Philanthropy, or Larry Absheer, Director of Advancement, to learn more about wills, trusts, and other estate planning topics. 2. Allow Cynthia or Larry to help show you how easy it is to set up a beneficiary designation. 3. If you need help with estate planning, Cynthia or Larry can put you in touch with a member of the Club’s Planned Giving Advisory Council, which is comprised of qualified MAC Members who can provide expert advice and assistance.

We appreciate your generosity … 28 F CHERRY DIAMOND

Jim Mosquera Visits the MAC Business Development Group Join the Business Development Group on May 20 as Jim Mosquera, Vice President of Corporate Development for Alliance Corporation, presents "The Emergence of Cryptocurrencies and Their Profound Impact on the Future of Money." In this presentation, Mosquera will discuss our concepts of money and its evolving forms. It is more than green pieces of paper in wallets or their digital representations in bank accounting systems. Can money one day solely be digital and operate in a trustless, though secure environment? How would such money come into existence? He will also discuss and explore the social and political implications of the underlying technology of cryptos with emphasis on Bitcoin. Mosquera is an avowed polymath with an academic background in engineering and professional experience in the telecom and technology field, in which he holds a patent. He achieved certification as a Commodity Trading Advisor (series 3 license) and was an active futures trader in his own accounts. A CULTURE OF CARING & TRUST

Don Kusterer

A customer of Mungenast St. Louis Acura since 1986 “ I currently own a 2019 Acura TLX and a 1996 NSX and I wouldn’t trust my cars with anyone else to take care of them, and the reason; the people and trust.” “The people are fantastic, the service is out of this world, and they do everything that I ask them to do and a little bit more. I can trust that I can bring my car in the front door and say ”do what it needs” and it’s done and I don’t have to worry.”
