LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT e are entering into my personal favorite season at the Club: the holiday season. It will not be long until the train display is set up at the Downtown Clubhouse and all the holiday decorations are up around both Clubhouses! Holiday parties will be plentiful, and, hopefully, the Blues will be off to a successful campaign and St. Louis City will be rolling to an inaugural MLS championship! I hope you will have the opportunity to enjoy your Club often during this special season in one way or another as we close out our 120th anniversary year. Last month, the Board of Governors traveled to Chicago for the annual Board retreat. It was a great trip. We stayed at the Union League Club of Chicago but also visited Riverside Golf Club, The Chicago Club, and the University Club of Chicago. It was a very busy and wellplanned retreat. And this year, all fifteen members of the Board attended the retreat, some with their spouses. This was a sacrifice of time and treasure by our Board members to benefit our Club, and it is greatly appreciated. Not surprisingly, we learned that there are many things we are doing well and some upon which we can improve. Here are a couple of quick takeaways. We are not alone in the challenges we face as a private Club, including the economic ones. Also, continuing to improve on the delivery of value to members in our offerings and services is a must. Having a strong vision for our Club is critical as well. Further, it is imperative we continue thinking ahead through our strategic planning efforts. One highlight for me during the retreat was hearing the initial, more formal feedback from our new GM/COO, Chip Misch. We had requested that he provide us with his initial “report card” regarding the MAC after his first 75 days. We of course wanted to hear from our new leader as to what we are doing well and what we can improve upon as a Club. Chip’s report was very informative. He definitely brings a new perspective, and he has already begun to leave his mark on the MAC. While Chip is still relatively new to the MAC, I am confident we chose a great new leader who will help us move closer to our Vision to be the “foremost private club in St. Louis known for attracting
W

exceptional people and enriching lives for generations.” Another highlight from the retreat was that my mom, Janet Perryman, was able to join our whole Board for dinner one night. She still resides in the Chicago area where I grew up. Thanks to Governor Petersen and the second-year Governor class for their leadership in planning the retreat! On the subject of Board service, I would again ask all members to consider serving on the Board. I have found it to be a very worthwhile experience. As I previously stated, I think you will be hard-pressed to find a former Governor who is not glad he/she served. If you have an interest in running for the Board of Governors, or in getting more involved in Board committee service, please reach out to me, any current Governor, or any Past President or Governor. Past President Angie Minges is the Chair of the Nominating Committee; Past President Brent Beumer is the Vice Chair. As reported in this column last month, on Oct. 13, 2023, the MAC held its annual Women of Distinction Awards Luncheon - Women of Vision: Leadership & Inspiration, at the Downtown Clubhouse. Congratulations again to all the awardees! Also, thanks again to Governor Jodi Petersen and Governor Carrie Burggraf for their leadership of this important MAC tradition. Finally, the 45th Annual Board of Governors’ Reunion was held on Oct. 17, 2023. It was a terrific night, and it was great to spend time with our Club’s past leaders. Looking ahead, there are lots of events in November, but I would like to highlight one here. The Apollos Fall Show will be held on Nov. 17, 2023, at the Downtown Clubhouse. This year marks the 80th anniversary of our Club chorus, the MAC’s original Club within the Club, and the program will feature songs through the decades. Please join us for what should be an enjoyable evening. See you around the Club!

Leaving a Legacy
HAVE YOU TAKEN YOUR “RMDs” YET FOR 2023? As a general rule, anyone 73 years of age or older is required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their tax-deferred accounts (IRAs and 401k) by Dec. 31, 2023, and pay taxes on the distribution.
BUT THERE IS A WAY TO AVOID PAYING TAXES! You can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRAs to your favorite charities and avoid taxation. The MAC Sports Foundation is a 501(c)(3) entity and is eligible to receive Qualified Charitable Distributions! Why not decide right now to save taxes this year and help the MAC Sports Foundation or the Charitable Society for Children at the same time? A QCD is an excellent tax-saving vehicle, but there are rules to be followed and pitfalls to be avoided.
To find out more about Qualified Charitable Distributions and other giving opportunities, please contact: LARRY ABSHEER (“LA”) Director of Advancement 314-604-3890 or labsheer@mac-stl.org

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
N
ovember brings the beginning of the holiday season, and the MAC team is diligently preparing for the many memorable festivities! We will begin decorating the clubhouses in the weeks ahead, and now is the perfect time to secure dining reservations for the many events planned in November and December, including ringing in 2024 in MAC-style! As communicated last month, we have suspended the waitlist for the West Clubhouse, and we are pleased to welcome 57 new members to the MAC family! The entire team joins me in welcoming all new members to the MAC, and we look forward to providing many years of memorable experiences for you and your families. A special note of thanks to Rodney Stoyer and Jeff Tuhro for overseeing this transition. And while the summer months of poolside fun are six months away, the management team is already planning a wonderful array of enhancements to the many offerings throughout the summer. Congratulations to Rodney Stoyer, who just finished his tenure as the President of the PCMA, a prestigious organization of professionals committed to the education and advancement of the private club industry. The PCMA experienced growth under Rodney’s leadership, and we are grateful for his contributions and for representing the MAC on such a large stage.

team! As shared last month, positioning the MAC as “The Employer of Choice” is a strategic priority for the leadership team, which will set atop our ongoing focus on enhancing the MAC experience. Please join me in thanking the team for their exceptional efforts, and as always, let us know how we are doing. I am grateful for the effort over the past month by many from our maintenance and housekeeping teams in oiling the wood throughout the lobby. The result has been remarkable! Management has been diligently preparing for enhancements to the food and beverage experience at both clubhouses and looks forward to a series of exciting announcements from the team in the weeks ahead, including new menus at the various outlets. We’re taking a multifaceted approach to our wine program, and the initial developments are truly thrilling! Look for insights from the team soon! By way of an update, the MAC float will not be participating in the Thanksgiving Parade. We are in the early stages of acquiring a new wagon for future floats, as the previous one was deemed unsafe and beyond repair. We will return for The St. Patrick’s Day festivities. CONGRATULATIONS also goes to the MAC’s very own Mrs. Audrey Tully, who was honored at the 2023 Women of Distinction event on Oct. 13 as a “Rising Star!” The entire event was impactful, and it was a privilege to experience the MAC celebrating so many deserving women leaders in our community! I have had the privilege of meeting with many members over the past several weeks. The feedback, insights and stories have been encouraging and enlightening. There has been one topic that has stood out above the rest. CARAMEL ROLLS WILL RETURN to Downtown in November! A special note of thanks to Chef Bart and his team for making this happen. ENJOY!

MAC BOOK CLUB Thursday, Nov. 9 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse On Nov. 9, the Book Club will be transported to the Sixteenth Century as Scott Molden leads the discussion of Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell. The setting is England, 1580: The Black Death creeps across the land, an ever-present threat, infecting the healthy, the sick, the old and the young alike. The end of days is near, but life always goes on. A young Latin tutor—penniless and bullied by a violent father—falls in love with an extraordinary, eccentric young woman. Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is just taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to a sudden fever. For monthly MAC Book Club meetings, reservations are made with Dr. Genie McKee, Book Club Chair, at evmckee@gmail.com.

Military History Club Looks Back at the Creek War of 1813 Tuesday, Nov. 28 F 11:30 a.m. F Downtown Clubhouse On Tuesday, Nov. 28, the Military History Club will welcome a return Zoom visit by Peter Cozzens, who will speak about his recent book A Brutal Reckoning: Andrew Jackson, the Creek Indians, and the Epic War for the American South. The book covers the story of the pivotal struggle between the Creek Indians and an insatiable, young United States for control over the Deep South. The Creek War is one of the most tragic episodes of American history, leading to the greatest loss of Native American life on what is now U.S. soil. What began as a vicious internal conflict among the Creek Indians metastasized like cancer. The ensuing Creek War of 1813-14 shattered Native American control of the Deep South and led to the infamous Trail of Tears, in which the government forcibly removed the southeastern Indians from their homeland. The war also gave Andrew Jackson his first combat leadership role,
and his newfound popularity after defeating the Creeks would set him on the path to the White House. In A Brutal Reckoning, Cozzens vividly captures a young Jackson, describing a brilliant but harsh military commander with unbridled ambition, a taste for cruelty, and a fraught sense of honor and duty. Jackson would not have won the war without the help of Native American allies, yet he denied their role and even insisted on their displacement, together with all the Indians of the American South in the Trail of Tears. A conflict involving not only white Americans and Native Americans but also the British and the Spanish, the Creek War opened the Deep South to the Cotton Kingdom, setting the stage for the American Civil War yet to come. No other single Indian conflict had such a significant impact on the fate of America – and A Brutal Reckoning is the definitive book on this forgotten chapter in our history. To truly lead the way in memory care,
It takes a village. A village of expert memory care clinicians. A village of highly-skilled nurses and staff for every stage of dementia—from assisted-living to skilled-nursing care. What’s more, we’ve designed Parc Provence to function as a village—with five levels of care provided in a household setting. MAC Members Serve and Support the 2023 CSC Charities Beyond Financial Contributions The students have created a new wish list of book titles they are eager to read, and once the library has enough inventory, they will be able to check out and take books home to enjoy. North Side is still looking to fill its shelves and book donations are being accepted through Nov. 15. Scan the QR code to access the Amazon Wish List of books. They will be shipped to the MAC Downtown Clubhouse and await final delivery by MAC Book Club. Book donations are also accepted at either Clubhouse. FOSTER TOGETHER Foster Together provides new car seats, clothing, shoes, bedding, baby items, toiletries and more so foster parents can focus on connecting with the children in their care. They come alongside local foster parents, leading to better outcomes for the most vulnerable children in our community. The Women’s Initiative Group hosted a volunteer morning this summer at the Foster Together boutique in Arnold, Mo., to help sort and restock donations. The organization is 100% volunteer and donation-driven! They welcome gently used and new items offered at no cost to help equip foster children as quickly as possible when settling into their new family environments. Volunteering could not have been easier, as the boutique is only 25 minutes from either Clubhouse. It was fun and rewarding to connect outside of the MAC and lend a helping hand in supporting one of our 2023 CSC charities.
NORTH SIDE COMMUNITY SCHOOL North Side’s mission is to improve each student’s opportunities in education and in life by developing the skills, knowledge and personal qualities necessary for success. MAC Book Club members helped kick off a book drive this summer to fill the shelves of the new library at North Side School. On Sept. 8, member donors delivered boxes of books, met the new librarian, and visited with students excited about reading! 16 F CHERRY DIAMOND
THE SOULARD SCHOOL The mission of the Soulard School (TSS) is to build a warm, welcoming learning environment that exemplifies the profound and real possibilities of a community dedicated to educating its children. TSS students excel in an integrated and experiential curriculum that encourages them to be inspired learners and good, productive citizens in our community. MAC member Howard Magill, owner of NuTerra Farms, donated an aquaponic vertical garden tower to The Soulard School in August to support their unique Culinary Arts Program. The CAP provides a farm-to-table experience at the school by exposing PreK through 5th-grade students to gardening practices, nutrition and culinary skills. It prepares them to be lifelong advocates of nutritious and delicious food. Jamie Vann, President and Founder of Spirit of Discovery Park, contributed a seed starter kit, minerals and grow tower training. The donated grow tower will make it possible to continue garden practices indoors all winter long!

“To represent the athletes, I think it’s a real testament to the MAC and its continued support of athletics in Missouri, and being a past recipient, I was very proud to be a part of it.” — Brett Hull
“It’s a great town and has been great to me and my family. I think that’s why so many guys from other towns decide to stay here because of the people. I want to be proud of the place where I call home and this is home.” — Ozzie Smith “The more I dug into it, the more honored I was and more humbled I was to be on that list of such accomplished athletes and people to be in that circle and be in that conversation. If nothing else happens in my career, then I’ll be able to hang my hat on it and it will be an amazing accomplishment.” — Miles Mikolas “It’s a great sports town and obviously Jack Buck is a name that’s synonymous with excellence and I think it’s a great honor to be here at the MAC and enjoy this. So many great names have won this award.” —Doug Armstrong Scan the QR code to watch the 50th Anniversary video produced in 2019.

St. Louis Sports Legends Celebrated at the MAC’s Jack Buck Sports Awards In 1970, Jack Buck built on the Missouri Athletic Club’s rich athletic tradition by creating the “Sports Personality of the Year” award. Buck, a longtime MAC member, envisioned an awards banquet to celebrate those individuals who have distinguished themselves and enhanced the St. Louis sports scene. The inaugural event began with a bang as Cardinal great Bob Gibson received the first Sports Personality of the Year trophy. In the following years, the annual event quickly developed into the premier sports banquet in St. Louis as a distinguished list of Hall of Famers, Olympic champions and coaching legends have been honored.
Lou Brock, Don Coryell, Ozzie Smith, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Brett Hull, Jimmy Connors, Marshall Faulk, Kurt Warner and Al MacInnis are just a few of the greats to have helped build this St. Louis sports tradition. The banquet is not only enjoyed by a full house in the MAC’s spectacular ballroom, listeners throughout the Midwest and beyond tune into KMOX Radio to hear the program. Every banquet since inception has aired live on KMOX. The banquet continues to thrive as more awards have been added to the program allowing for St. Louis sports fans to hear even more great stories.
Carnell Claims 2023 Sports Personality of the Year It was a historic inaugural season for St. Louis CITY SC. While fan enthusiasm was off the charts with every game being sold out before the team even played a match, not much was expected on the pitch. Most preseason rankings predicted the team to finish dead last in the 29-team Major League Soccer, but the team immediately began to defy the odds from the start. St. Louis kicked off their season with a bang, becoming the first expansion team to start their debut season with a 5-0-0 record. CITY SC also became the first expansion team in MLS history to win 17 regular season games in their inaugural season. After clinching the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, CITY SC became the first expansion team to earn the top seed in their conference. It is appropriate that in this historic season of firsts, CITY SC would also make their mark on the Sports Personality of the Year award. Head Coach Bradley Carnell is the first winner of the award from the world of soccer. He joins the list of other coaching greats who have won the Sports Personality of the Year award including Whitey Herzog, Norm Stewart, Charlie Spoonhour, Dick Vermeil, Gary Pinkel and Craig Berube. The 46-year-old native of South Africa is the overwhelming favorite to win the MLS Coach of the Year Award. Carnell will look to continue the historic run as the team gears up for the MLS playoffs. Carnell, along with other distinguished members of the St. Louis sports community, will be honored at the 54th annual
Jack Buck Sports Awards on Dec. 5. Another first-year coach who made a major impact is Saint Louis University women’s basketball coach Rebecca Tillett, who led her team to a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the first in school history. She will receive the Carl O. Bauer Award. Along with CITY SC, another fresh franchise took St. Louis by storm. The Battlehawks smashed XFL attendance records as the Dome was rocking throughout the spring. Brandon Williams, the Battlehawks Vice President of Business and Event Operations, deserves much of the credit, and he will receive the Jack Buck Award. The St. Louis native and former Rams wide receiver is one of the youngest sports executives in the region. Check MAC social media for more award winners to be announced.

Coach Maggie’s Tips for Eating on Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving is a special time to gather with friends and family to offer thanks and gratitude, but it’s also when many of us overeat and splurge. The average American eats about 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving which is more than double what the average adult needs daily. Here are some of my tips to help you enjoy your meal without overdoing it. Do not starve yourself until dinner: Don’t skimp on meals all day to save some room for Thanksgiving dinner or you’ll end up overeating and doing more damage. Aim to eat something every few hours – have an egg-white omelet for breakfast with a vegetable. If you eat early in the afternoon, have a light snack, such as a protein shake or 4oz of yogurt with a few berries. If you eat in the evening, eat something light for lunch. Yogurt, cottage cheese, low-sodium tuna, chicken, or white fish are great options. Skip all starch until your dinner. Wear something fitted: You’ll be less likely to overeat if you are not wearing loose clothing. Be mindful of portions: It can be difficult to control how much food you eat when you’re surrounded by it; grab a small plate if one’s available. Those who choose smaller plates
24 F CHERRY DIAMOND
eat up to 50 percent less calories. If only large plates are available, make sure you can see your “plate.” If all you see is food and no plate, then you have too much food. Have a plan: Fill most of your plate with turkey, salad, and green beans – leave a quarter of your plate for the fun stuff. Serve yourself a golf-ball-size portion of three of your favorite treats. Stay active: Get a workout in before your big meal or organize a family hike or walk. There are also Turkey Trot races that make for a fun family outing. Check your area for local event details. Watch the cocktails: Alcohol can lower your inhibitions, causing you to overeat. Limit yourself to two drinks for the night of either wine or clear liquor (ex: vodka with Sprite Zero or lime), and be sure to drink a lot of water in between. Choose your leftovers carefully: If you are offered leftovers, only take the turkey. If you’re hosting dinner, send your guests home with all the extras or freeze it in containers for future use. Use your leftover meat for a turkey salad with low-fat mayo or serve it over greens with olive oil and walnuts. Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar: 1 Tablespoon to 8 ounces of water and drink 20 minutes before your meal. Do not drink it straight up.

MAC Physical Therapy: Helping Members Get Back to What They Love “Jay Zaber, P.T., was able to save my vacation that I had planned for over a year! While playing in the MAC Sports Foundation golf tournament I injured my calf and was unable to complete the round. I was distraught because I was leaving for an elk hunt in the mountains of New Mexico, and I thought for sure that I would not be able to make it. Paul Helfrich introduced me to Jay, and I began immediate treatment. Jay worked a miracle, and I was able to make the trip and complete the hunt. The new direct access law makes it easy to take advantage of this service at the West Clubhouse. I can’t thank each of these guys enough for getting me back on the trail!” — MAC member Phil Brown

EMBRACE THE SPIRIT: Celebrating the MAC’s 120th Anniversary & Supporting the Employee Holiday Fund As the holiday season approaches, it is time to reflect on the outstanding year filled with events and milestones. In this special year, the Missouri Athletic Club is celebrating its 120th anniversary, and there has been no shortage of Club spirit among members and staff! This extraordinary achievement owes much to the diligent efforts of the exceptional staff throughout the year and during Spirit Week. Their presence can be felt in the locker rooms, the bustling kitchen, the basement laundry room and engineering offices, whether visible daily or working hard behind the scenes. The unwavering dedication of the MAC staff members has seamlessly maintained the operations of both Clubhouses for countless years. The Employee Holiday Fund annually extends a holiday bonus to the MAC staff and supports the Club’s charitable endeavors. The MAC’s employees are ever grateful to the Club’s membership for this tremendous show of appreciation. This year, a portion of the funds will go to the Charitable Society for Children (CSC), furthering the Club’s commitment to its values of tradition, community and culture. Your Oct. 31 member statement, whether paper or digital, will display a voluntary contribution charge of $120, symbolizing
the MAC’s 120 years of existence, and labeled as “Empl Holiday/Foundations Cont.” Unless you inform the Accounting Department otherwise, the MAC will allocate the funds as follows: F $115 to the Employee Holiday Fund F $5 to the MAC Charitable Society for Children (a tax-deductible contribution) Maintaining the current allocation requires no further action on your part. However, if you wish to adjust or opt out of the contribution, you can contact the Accounting Department or access the form available on the MAC website. ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT Call 314-539-4432 or email billing@mac-stl.org MAC WEBSITE Member Central > Member Documents > Holiday Fund Thank you for showing your support for the Missouri Athletic Club, its dedicated employees, and the Foundations that tie the community together. Together, we continue to build a legacy of excellence and celebrate 120 years of camaraderie, achievement and cherished memories.
