President’s Column

President’s Column President John Bugh

I spent a few days golfing in the Florida sun last month. MAC members Mark Belew, Dave Hoffman, Scott Engelbrecht, John Carroll, Joel Karsten and I cashed in on a Gala Auction item generously donated by Mr. Belew. The trip was full of typical MAC camaraderie: golf, great meals, plenty of laughs and a few cold beers. As we flew back to St. Louis, it hit me that for the most part we all met at the MAC. We are now close friends, our children and wives are friends, we do business together and, of course, we have a lot of fun together. Governor Troy Robertson tells a story that perfectly encapsulates what the MAC means to so many of us. When Troy joined the MAC in 2001, he knew two members. When Troy and Tressa were married 10 years later, more than 50 of his guests were MAC members. What a story! Life is all about the relationships we form – I hope each of you have formed as many as I have thanks to membership at the MAC. As I mentioned last month, the MAC’s fiscal year ended on Aug. 31, and there is plenty of good news to report. Please see Governor John Salter’s report on page 5 for details. I’m pleased to report that the Board approved the 2014 budget, and it includes NO DUES OR CAPITAL FEE INCREASE! Although costs at the club continue to climb, we are experiencing

increases in membership count and member spending and that is offsetting higher costs. Improvement in the overall economy helps, but Your Club will continue to gain strength because You participate. Have an extra meal in one of our restaurants, schedule a training session or join a Club Within the Club. In short, participate and help us gain financial strength. Speaking of Clubs Within the Club, the Lunch and Tour Group is in the spotlight this month. No need for regularly scheduled meetings or committees, this group arranges fun and exciting outings to places around the St. Louis area for lunch, dinner or an activity. For more information, contact Marie Salter at 314-567-5976. My family has really enjoyed the new dining options out West. Prime Rib and Seafood Saturday, Sunday Brunch and Sunday Dinner in the formal dining room are a nice change from the casual dinner we normally have in our workout clothes. I hope you will give Chef Grant and his team a chance to impress you and your guests. I’d like to give a big thank you to all the golfers and sponsors who came out for the Sixth Annual MAC Golf Classic, held to benefit the MAC Preservation Foundation. Glen Echo Country Club was the beautiful setting for this event,

which raised more than $50,000 for the Foundation. If you couldn’t tell from last month’s cover of the magazine, it’s football season – and the Rams kicked off the regular season on Sept. 8 with a win over the Arizona Cardinals. To make it an even better day, our own Cardinals celebrated a win as well over the Pirates. This is a great sports town, and the MAC is your sports headquarters. If you’re coming downtown, whether to see the Rams, Cards, Blues or Billikens, be sure to stop by the Club before or after the game. More information on game day events and our convenient shuttle are available on page 16. Sports aren’t just for watching though! Many of our fall sports leagues and clinics, for both youth and adults, are underway or just starting. Whether you’re competing, improving your game, or taking up a new sport, there’s an option for you at the Missouri Athletic Club. In this issue, we’re highlighting some of the successes of the tennis program, but we have world-class coaches and trainers in a variety of sports. Finally, this is a busy month at the MAC, and there are plenty of activities lined up for you and your whole family. October wouldn’t be complete without Oktoberfest, and the West Clubhouse is playing host to not just one but three unique events. From sampling traditional German delicacies to games and crafts for the kids, these events will help you make the most of fall. If you have young ones, you won’t want to miss our annual TrunkR-Treat event. Check out page 21 of this issue for more details. I will see you around the Club! John Bugh President

Finance Committee

Finance Committee Update John Salter

I am happy to report that the Club’s financial position continues to improve. The year-end results show that decisions taken by Club Management and the Board of Governors over the past three years, coupled with an improving economy, and especially the decision by our members to spend more in the Club, are moving us toward much sounder financial footing. The Club’s fiscal year ended on Aug. 31, 2013, and reflected the following positive trends: • For the first time since 2004, the Club ended the year with more members than we had at the beginning of the year. Without a dues increase, membership revenues reached $7.2 million. • Our hotel brought in nearly a million dollars in revenue and nearly doubled last year’s profit. • Overall cash flow was $1,024,000, allowing increased capital expenditures for athletic equipment, pool refurbishments at the West Clubhouse and much needed maintenance on the Downtown Clubhouse. • Departmental revenues (not including dues) were up more than 7.3% from 2012 – a gain of $688,000 over 2012 and a sure sign that our members are using the Club and benefitting from membership. • Club management is monitoring expenses, while at the same time recognizing that it is necessary to invest in order to grow. Total payroll increased 4.6%, reflecting both staff additions and wage adjustments, while the overall Departmental Operating

Expense was reduced by nearly $81,000. • We continue to pay down debt – over $725,000 in principal payments each year – and the combined balance on the West Mortgage, the Parking Garage and Operating Loan is now under $8 million. With the refinancing of our bank debt a year ago, interest expense fell by $31,000 and use of the Club’s credit line fell dramatically as overall cash flow became strong enough to sustain operations. Last month the Finance Committee and the Board approved the Fiscal 2014 Operating Budget. General Manager Smith (along with his management team) spent countless hours on the budget process. Incorporating aspects of the “Three Buckets,” an improving membership count and many of the trends above have resulted in a budget that will keep the Club on a solid and sustainable path. Management and your Board have committed themselves to continuing to focus efforts on enhancing the membership experience. That budget allows us to continue to plan improvements to that membership experience; we are planning expanded investment in athletic equipment, including a resurface of the West Tennis Courts. Smaller projects will appear throughout the year. Continued upgrades to our hotel will allow even better revenue expansion there. The Downtown Clubhouse will continue to require maintenance, and we will also make improvements to the West Clubhouse. While our financial condition is considerably better than just a few years ago, there is plenty of hard work ahead.

Our staff, headed by General Manager Smith and our top flight financial team, led by CFO Larry Absheer and Accounting Manager Pam Roth, are completely focused on keeping our finances moving in the right direction. Your member-led Finance Committee will do the same. Allow me to just add a word of thanks to the members of the Committee who volunteer their time to work on making sure your Club is fiscally secure and always moving to improve our membership experience. The Club’s independent accounting firm (BKD) is working on the year-end audit as we speak. As is the case every year, the annual audit will be available for review by the end of the year. Finally, I am thrilled to confirm that because of continued financial improvement, we are planning NO dues or capital fee increase in fiscal 2014. We understand that increases will likely become necessary in the future, but for now, we can celebrate a second consecutive year without added expense. In his column, President Bugh reminded us that membership is more than just paying dues and using the gym. We all benefit from the efforts of two world-class chefs and top flight restaurant facilities. Our banquet and catering facilities are second to none. Our two Clubhouses offer unique membership experiences, with the Downtown “city” club feeling and the wonderful family orientation at West. Our hotel is a perfectly located “boutique” facility in the heart of the city. We need your continued support to keep and grow Our Club. If all of our 2,400 members ate one more meal at the club each month, we’d increase revenues by nearly $1.45 million, more than double the amount we would raise with a dues increase. So, please, come on out and enjoy Your Club. I’ll be looking for you! Thanks for your support, John Salter Finance Chairman

Dining Highlights New Dinner Menu: The new dinner menu in the Jack Buck Grill has been a great success. We have also decided to serve a pair of miniature desserts complementary after your dinner service. This is just our way to say thank you for enjoying the new menu and being our guest. Your Sports Headquarters: Our tailgating before Rams games is really drawing crowds, and the parking lot is abuzz with music, beer and bratwurst. If the weather is too hot or cold, come enjoy our buffet in the Sportsman’s Club. For a quick bite, you can also head to the Jack Buck Grill and order off the Rams Bar Menu. Stop by after the game and enjoy a drink and our Angus burger while the traffic winds down. Go Cardinals! If the season has been any sign of how the team is doing, then I would expect to see the Cardinals in the playoffs and heading into the World Series. We will be right here for you with some great food and drink specials before and after the game. Oktoberfest: In October, the Sportsman’s Lunch Buffet will offer some great German Oktoberfest-style dishes. Our mouthwatering features will include knockwurst with apple sauerkraut, dark beer pork roast, goulash soup, chicken schnitzel and of course, German-style potato pancakes. Holidays at the MAC: In the next couple of months, the holidays will be in full swing at the Downtown Clubhouse. From the Grand Thanksgiving Buffet to Breakfast with Santa, Christmas Eve Dinner and our Traditional Christmas Day Buffet, the Club will be shining for the season. October Fun: I am looking forward to the many exciting events we have planned this fall. These include three amazing Oktoberfest events: the FYC Oktoberfest dinner on Oct. 12; Brat and Local Beer Tasting on Oct. 19; and our classic German Sunday Brunch buffet on Oct. 20. Authentic German recipes, designed to delight your taste buds, will be featured for each event. Bring friends and family as these functions will be sure to impress. We will also be hosting our Family Fun Trunk-R-Treat event on Oct. 27. This event was a blast last year and I anticipate an even better time this year! Thanksgiving Made Easy: With Thanksgiving and the bustle of the holiday season just around the corner, let us take the work out of your holiday meal with our new “Gourmet Thanksgiving To Go Service” out West, allowing you to enjoy the day with friends and family. We will feature turkeys sized small to extra-large, dressings, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, West caramel rolls, pies and many other traditional holiday fare. All items will be packaged in secure to-go containers with easy heating instructions. Make this Thanksgiving one to remember and give us the honor of making it easy for you and your guests. Welcome Your Feedback: Member satisfaction is the most important part of my job, and I really enjoy hearing from you. Constructive criticism and honest feedback is what will continue to make us great. So don’t hesitate to contact me at any time with any comments you may have regarding your dining experience and what we can do to make it better. Give me a call at 314-539-4476 or shoot me an email at ghiggs@ mac-stl.org anytime. I appreciate your support going forward! One-Year Anniversary: My how time has flown! As you are reading this, I will have been here one year on Oct. 15. I feel blessed to have landed in such a wonderful storied institution. We have accomplished so much out West, yet I feel like we have just scratched the surface. I spent most of the first year taking it all in, applying a foundation on culinary fundamentals, and changing the way we do food at the MAC. I look forward to the next year and am honored with the challenge of serving as Food and Beverage Director. My management team and I will be introducing many new exciting events and menu items. I hope you will make time, bring a guest and enjoy all the wonderful MAC has to offer this holiday season! See you at the Club! Grant Higgs, Chef/Food and Beverage Director West Clubhouse

General Manager

From the General Manager’s Desk Wally Smith

Dear MAC Members: Our staff has worked diligently over the past several months developing our fiscal year 2014 operating and capital budgets in conjunction with our Finance Committee. While the process is extremely time consuming, not to mention brain-draining, it is so important. I have always viewed the budget as the “agenda” for the upcoming year, and the plans, hours of work, discussions, new initiatives and individual accountability are the stories behind the numbers. As President Bugh noted on page 5, we worked hard this year to bypass the need for a dues or fee increase. This is the second year where we have strived to grow our business opportunities rather than pass an increase along to our members. There is a Club philosophy out there and belief by many that moderate and regular dues increases allow clubs to keep up with employee costs, insurance and utility type increases, which in many ways make sense and a very valid point. Many Clubs frankly live on annual dues increases. At some point, our dues will need to be modestly raised so why work so hard to avoid the inevitable?

The easy answer is because we have so much opportunity in front of us with our Platinum Partnership membership program and other “Bucket” initiatives. Our goal is to create as much member “value” as we can. That means value within our programs, our facilities, our people experiences, community involvement and ample opportunities for that world famous “MAC Camaraderie.” Priceless! So a dues increase this year? Nope, not this year and not if we can possibly avoid it, keeping center of mind that we still need to get the priority capital projects looming accomplished. With your help and support I believe we can make it all work. How do you chip in and play a role in the MAC’s vibrant future? Well, here are a number of ways: • If you are a member or an associate who meets monthly and happens to eat and drink, we love you and need you here at the MAC. • When your company brings in vendors, employees or even witnesses (for you attorneys) they need to stay with us Downtown. • If you don’t have a Platinum Partner,

WHAT’S NEW ON THE WEB The MAC website is your hub to see what’s going on at the Club. Log in to view the calendar and register for upcoming events. Also, be sure to check out: • New Menus for Jack Buck Grill • Video of the Month – this month: MAC’s top-notch Junior Athletic programs • 2013-2014 Sports Program and Clinics Schedules (Adult and Youth) • Upcoming Clubs Within the Club events • Nominate a 2014 Charity • Updated Catering Menus • Recent Publications, including the Cherry Diamond, The Buffet and CWC a la Carte • And Much More!

this is the year to invite one into the fold. • Have one more meal or event at the Club each month for the next 12 months. It’s that easy. Pick just one from the list above and we are there. The MAC is on the move, the economy is improving and our programs and people are striving to be the best. One new program that is gaining traction is our new Dining events at the West Clubhouse. At our first Sunday Buffet, around 100 people joined us to enjoy some great food, and as the good word gets out, we expect it to grow. In the weeks ahead, you can look forward to tasty offerings such as Prime Rib and Seafood Saturday Nights, Throwback Thursday classic menu items and delicious Sunday Brunch. Come by and check out all the new tastes our West Clubhouse has to offer. You may have seen some of the signs and promotions for the MAC “Landing Spot.” So, what is it? This is a new way to showcase the Club with a prospective member or connect with fellow members while having a great time. There’s always a lot going on at the MAC so be sure to look for upcoming “Landing Spots” listed in the Cherry Diamond (see page 2 of this issue) and join the fun! See you at the Club, Wally

MAC member Ron Daugherty recently traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica, to represent the U.S. Fencing Team at the 2013 Pan American Youth & Veteran’s Championships. Coached by MAC’s own Hossam Hassan, Ron competed in both the individual and team events in the Veteran Men’s Foil competition. Coach Hassan and his wife, Rasha, traveled to Costa Rica and proudly watched as Ron placed 8th in the individual event. The best was yet to come though, as Ron and his two teammates took home the gold medal in the team event. Ron served as captain for the three-person team, which included fencers from Canada and Venezuela. Congratulations to Ron!

New Squash Pro

The MAC would like to welcome Asif Waziri, our Club’s new Assistant Squash Pro. Asif started playing squash under Hashim Khan’s coaching in Denver at the age of 13. He has partially coached some of the elite juniors at the J. Squash achievement and developed a successful juniors program from scratch. Asif, along with Squash Pro Heidi Mather, offers private lessons and clinics for all levels. The MAC Squash program is also kicking off its season with 59 players signed up for the squash singles ladder. For more information, visit the MAC website. (Athletics > Squash)

Jack Buck Sports Awards Banquet, Dec. 11 This Event always sells out, so make reservations early. Reservations will be accepted beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m. Call 314-539-4470 for reservations. The candidates for the prestigious Missouri Athletic Club Sports Personality of the Year are set. The award, which MAC member Jack Buck helped establish in 1970, annually honors the top local sports figure. The candidates for the 2013 Sports Personality of the Year are Matt Carpenter, Allen Craig, Jim Crews, Jeff Fisher and Yadier Molina. Matt Carpenter made a smooth transition from third base to full-time second baseman. He not only handled his new position well defensively, he emerged as one of the top hitting second basemen in baseball. Carpenter was a consistent performer atop the Cardinals lineup all season and earned a trip to the All-Star game. Slugger Allen Craig put together one of the most clutch seasons in baseball history. Through August, the Cardinals cleanup hitter hit a remarkable .452 with runners in scoring position. As a point of comparison, the league average is .254. The record is .469 in 1980 by Kansas City’s George Brett. Saint Louis University basketball coach Jim Crews stepped into a difficult situation following the passing of legendary coach Rick Majerus. Under his leadership, Crews led the Billikens to an Atlantic-10 conference championship and a Top 20 finish in the nation. He was named national coach of the year by The Sporting News and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. In just his second season, Jeff Fisher has helped rejuvenate the Rams. The former

Titans coach inherited a team that finished with just two wins in 2011 and guided them to seven victories in 2012. In year two, Fisher is looking to help the youngest team in the NFL take the next step and make the playoffs. For years Yadier Molina has been recognized as the game’s best defensive catcher. In recent seasons, he has also become one of the top hitters at the position. Molina made his fifth consecutive appearance in the AllStar game. The winner of the 2013 Sports Personality of the Year will be selected by the members of the Missouri Athletic Club. Over the years, the award has honored some of the biggest names in sports history: Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Brett Hull, Albert Pujols, Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk are a few of the distinguished past winners. Join us to honor the 2013 Sports Personality of the Year, along with other distinguished members of the St. Louis sports community, at the 43rd annual Jack Buck Sports Awards Banquet. Retirement

Are You SET for Retirement? After more than 40 years in the workforce, a secure and comfortable retirement is the goal of nearly all Americans. Retirement plans may include traveling, engaging in hobbies, volunteering or simply having the time to spend with family and friends, but all of these are just dreams without proper financial planning and saving. The average American spends 20 years in retirement, and yet, less than half of Americans today are currently saving for retirement. Even more scary, most have not taken the time to calculate how much they need to save, leaving them at risk to come up short. Even if you are already ahead of the game and actively saving, here are some mistakes to avoid as you plan for your retirement. Poor Asset Allocation We’ve all heard it over and over again – diversify, diversify, diversify. But you also need to consider your risk strategy, which is likely to change with your age and goals. In allocating your investments, you don’t want to be too aggressive, but being too cautious can also deprive you of the growth you need to secure your retirement. Underestimating Your Life Expectancy About one-third of retirees and pre-retirees say they look less than 10 years in the future when they think about retirement finances, and another one-third look 10-19 years in the future. With many older adults living well into their 80s and 90s, expert suggest they might be wise to start looking 25 years out. While retirees are active and healthier than ever before, a longer life expectancy also means you need to prepare for the potential of longterm care costs. Underestimating Health Care Costs Are you assuming your health care costs will be covered after you qualify for Medicare at

age 65? Fidelity Investments estimates that a couple retiring in 2013 will need approximately $220,000 to cover health care costs in retirement, and that does not include nursing home or other long-term care. Fidelity also adds that “retirees now spend more on health care than they do on food.” Misjudging Your Ability to Keep Working Many people continue working past the age of 65. Sometimes this decision is due to financial necessity, but many others make this choice to stay active and generate extra income. However, relying on this plan presumes that both you and the job market for seniors remains healthy. You can’t predict risks such as illness, disability or job loss, so it’s often better to plan as if your working years won’t continue indefinitely. Ignoring the Tax Impact of Distributions In retirement, the key is creating tax-efficient income. That’s why it’s helpful to have several kinds of accounts, from fully taxable to taxdeferred (like your 401k) to tax-free (your Roth IRA). This gives you the most flexibility when drawing down assets. And don’t cash out too early. Nearly half of workplace retirement plan participants cash out their balances when they change jobs, triggering penalties and setting back long-term asset growth. Don’t Focus Too Much on Your Nest Egg This last advice may seem counterintuitive to the other planning tips. While it’s important to check regularly that your asset allocation remains appropriate for your retirement goals, you don’t want to get carried away. Month-to-month fluctuations are a natural part of economic cycles. It’s also important to consider how you’ll actually spend your time in retirement. This type of planning will make the transition easier and your retirement years that much more enjoyable.

FOREVER YOUNG CLUB

From riverboat rides to radio, the Forever Young Club is staying busy.

Setting Sail

In August, 45 FYC members boarded the Spirit of Peoria for an adventure up the mighty Mississippi. Commentary by the boat’s own riverlorian brought to life the history of the river and attendees viewed some of the region’s most dramatic scenery. From a pass under the new Stan Musial Veteran’s Memorial Bridge to up-close viewing of the locks and dams to a bald eagle sighting, everyone enjoyed the lunch and journey, ending in Grafton, Ill. A big thank you to Bill and Marilyn Ells for arranging the excursion!

Back to Bach

Even before St. Louis’s beloved KFUO-FM went off the air, the Forever Young Club’s October speaker, program director Jim Connett, was planning for a new classical music station. Now, after three years of work by Jim and supporters, the Radio Arts Foundation is on the air, with Jim as general manager. FYC invites all MAC members to the October meeting to hear Jim’s story of the struggle to get RAF-STL on the air and what its future holds. FOREVER YOUNG CLUB MEETING Friday, Oct. 18 11:30 a.m. - West Clubhouse Reservations: 314-539-4490

Adventure West Dinners

Last year, three couples from the FYC had some great ideas for fine meals and a full dining room at West, which has led to some very special nights. Adventure West dinners all have a theme and never go over $40 a head! We’ve had lobster and steak – and up next is a fine German dinner. Enjoy live theme music and an unforgettable dinner from Chef Grant Higgs. All are welcome, FYC member or not, and men are encouraged to wear coats and ties. Join us and let us know what you think! ARTIST OF THE MONTH - Harry Weber Harry Weber is this month’s featured artist in the MAC Art Gallery at the Downtown Clubhouse. Following his education at Princeton University, Weber served six years in the United States Navy, including a year on river patrol boats in Vietnam where he compiled a compelling series of drawings chronicling his experiences. His impressions of Korea and Desert Storm were done at the request of a veteran’s organization in Alabama and are on display at the Military Museum on the U.S.S. Alabama. Weber is well-known for his sculptures, which are highly regarded for their sense of

movement and vitality, and more than 100 have been installed across the country and abroad. His aim is to have his sculptural work show the same life and spontaneity as his sketches. In St. Louis, he is best known for the 10 action figures of St. Louis Hall of Fame baseball players outside of Busch Stadium, the statue of Dred and Harriet Scott on the east side of the Old Courthouse and the large Lewis and Clark statue just south of the Eads Bridge. If you are interested in purchasing any of the work that is displayed at the Club, contact Wendy Descher at 314-539-4438.

THE MAC GETS A SPECIAL PIECE OF MUSIAL HISTORY While numerous pieces of Stan Musial memorabilia will go up for auction this month, one special item will find a new home on display at the Missouri Athletic Club. In the late 1960s, Lillian Musial commissioned artist Robert Templeton to create a painting of her husband. Templeton, who passed away in 1991, was well-known for painting the Presidential portraits of Lyndon B. Johnson and Jimmy Carter, as well as civilrights figures Rosa Parks and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The completed painting was displayed at Musial and Biggie’s Restaurant for many years before it made its way to Stan’s home den. “The painting meant too much to our dad and our family,” said Stan’s son Dick Musial. “We couldn’t let it go to one person. It should have a home where a lot of people can view it.” The portrait of the legendary Cardinal will be on display at the Downtown Clubhouse following an unveiling event on Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. “Dad had so many great friends at the MAC,” Dick went on to say. “The MAC is the ideal destination for this painting.”
