LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

s we wrap up August, I want to extend my sincere thanks for your contributions throughout Foundations’ Month. Your generosity truly makes a difference! A special shout-out goes to Past President John Bugh, Katie Maurer, and the team for organizing another outstanding Foundations’ Golf Tournament and Auction.

At the time of submission, the Board had not yet met to approve the fiscal year 2025 budget, which begins on Sept. 1. The past eleven months have been very active for the MAC, and the Board is committed to carrying the momentum of the past year into the new year. There was a deliberate approach to elevating the member experience and strategically positioning the Club for success over the next ten years – and beyond!

The response from the membership and the MAC’s position in the market is impressive; Initiation fees are up 114% over the prior year; net income is up 11.2% over the year prior; and most notably, operating revenues are up 13.1%, which translates into $ 1.7 million over the year prior! The additions, enhancements, and service improvements are a direct reflection of this remarkable growth. Given the service-centric nature of our business, cost increases are measurably higher as well. Our general/administrative, facilities maintenance, and clubhouse expenses are collectively up 17.3% year over year, or $1.7 million, and our largest expense - payroll - is a combined 13.8% over the prior year.

As we look ahead to next year’s budget, we remain committed to our mission: “To create extraordinary experiences in all aspects of club life in the spirit of excellence, service and tradition.” Core budget assumptions for the year ahead include:

F Continuing to reinforce our position as an employer of choice – our team of employees is at the center of our Club culture.

F Enhancing the member experience at all levels through personalized service. Our training manager, hired last year, will expand on the many levels of training centered on service consistency throughout the entire MAC.

F Driving member usage through inviting and exciting programs and offerings.

F Addressing critical needs across both Clubhouses, including the Missouri Ballroom and Eads Room Downtown, and the basketball courts at West.

F Building capital for future projects, relying on the Reserve Studies to guide our prioritization of capital investments

F Welcome new members to the MAC family.

Our needs are many, particularly as they relate to retaining our employees and the upkeep required with our facilities, which span 400,000 square feet. Management will be tasked with improving the member experience while also being fiscally prudent in

managing operations. Once the Board approves the 2025 fiscal budget, I will communicate the plan.

As Chip noted in the August Cherry Diamond, we’re progressing with master planning for our West Clubhouse. This will involve a comprehensive asset review across both Clubhouses via the Reserve Studies. The effort will take most of the upcoming year, with focus groups, a member survey, and ongoing communications.

I recently communicated a progress update on the exploration of opportunities in Clayton, with a key next step being to gather member feedback through focus group sessions. Scheduling and preparation for these sessions are underway, and we look forward to hearing your insights, which are crucial to completing our initial evaluation and working towards a decision.

Please note the new security system for the West Clubhouse. The MAC app’s mobile key access feature will ensure that only verified members can enter. More information is available on page 11. This system will be enforced starting Sept. 3, so be sure to check your email for detailed guidance. We’re also developing plans for the Downtown location in the meantime.

In early September, we’ll celebrate our incredible team at our annual Employee Appreciation event. Their dedication to excellent service is truly commendable. Later in the month, the Board will spend a couple of days together in Florida. In addition to providing an opportunity for camaraderie and fellowship, we’ll explore several projects with Peacock + Lewis, the firm developing our master plans. I’m looking forward to spending time together as well as gaining and sharing insights that will help further efforts within the Club.

Don’t miss our Women of Distinction Awards Luncheon on Oct. 9! This annual event celebrates women who make a significant impact through their professions, civic engagement, and mentoring. This year’s honorees include MAC members Allie Dudenhoeffer, Lindsey Niemeier, and Past President Angie Minges. More details on this event are on page 9 and be sure to scan the QR code on that page to listen to the Missouri Athletic Club Connections podcast on the same subject.

We have many important initiatives underway to enhance our member experiences and ensure the Club’s continued success and purposeful, sustainable growth for generations to come.

Thank you for your ongoing support. I look forward to seeing you around the Club soon.

With gratitude,

Foundations’ Month was a Great Success!

Your financial support goes a long way in helping the MAC serve its Members and the St. Louis Community through the MAC Sports Foundation and its Charitable Society for Children. Our future depends on YOU, and we sincerely appreciate your support.

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

At the heart of our membership growth over the past year is our most capable membership team. Rodney Stoyer oversees the team and has been doing so since 2018. Rodney began his club industry experiences in 2016 as the Director of Membership at The Country Club of St. Albans. Prior to St. Albans, Rodney served as head of the Washington Area Chamber of Commerce. Since his arrival to the MAC team, the Club’s membership has grown at impressive levels, with heightened efforts in member retention.

Rodney is an active member of The Club Management Association of America, as well as the Professional Club Marketing Association, serving in a host of Board positions, including President of PCMA in 2023. He is a graduate of Western Illinois University, with a B.S. in Human Resource Management. Rodney has been married to Kristy since 2010 and they have two beautiful twin children, Camden and Kylee, age 10.

Rodney is a key member of our leadership team at the MAC and plays an integral part in defining better in all that we do. He is supported by his team, Becky Gan, Hannah Rowland and Elizabeth Brown. I am thankful for the collective effort and professionalism they bring to the MAC.

As we continue to enhance our position as an “Employer of Choice,” a decision has been made

to close our Clubhouse operations Downtown on Christmas Day. We will offer our traditional Christmas Eve dinner, and Chef Bart and the team will also have a take-home menu offering for pickup on Christmas Eve to assist with all of your family planning. On behalf of our dedicated team of employees, thank you for allowing our team to enjoy the holidays with family.

By the time you review this issue of the Cherry Diamond, you will have received notice on our newest amenity Downtown, our 6th Floor Board Room and Meeting Rooms – available for all members for their business meeting and entertainment needs. We are experiencing wonderful interest already and look forward to seeing you there. Any member of the management team will gladly provide a tour when we are officially open.

September brings about a new fiscal year and with it, new goals and higher expectations! Management and I look to the year ahead with much enthusiasm and are eager to add to the notable progress over the past year.

Very best regards,

RODNEY STOYER

MAC ART COLLECTION SPOTLIGHT

Harry (Harold) Walton Freckleton was a painter in oils of flowers, still lifes, landscapes, portraits and particularly of children playing in sunshine. He attended Nottingham School of Art between 1904 and 1912, worked as a lithographic artist during World War I and followed his father as a photographer running a photographic business from 1924-1965. Freckleton exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Portrait Painters and Royal Society of British Artists. His delightful, idyllic scenes with children are amongst some of his most recognized subjects and reveal his skill for painting light, reflection and movement.

Have you seen this painting?

Tucked away where members might easily pass by on their way to the Salon, this painting was once featured as the cover image on the dining menu for the Downtown Clubhouse’s Rendezvous Restaurant.

Thursday, Oct. 10 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

As summer green eases into fall colors, Jim Gallen leads the discussion of “All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me” by Patrick Bringley on Sept. 12.

Millions of people climb the grand marble staircase to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art each year; however, only a select few have unrestricted access to every nook and cranny. The guards who roam unobtrusively in dark blue suits keep a watchful eye on the two-million-square-foot treasure house. Caught up in his glamorous fledgling career at The New Yorker, Patrick Bringley never thought he’d be one of them. When his older brother was diagnosed with fatal cancer, he found himself needing to escape the mundane clamor of daily life and seek solace in the most beautiful place he knew. To his surprise, and the reader’s delight, this temporary refuge becomes Bringley’s home away from home for a decade. “All the Beauty in the World” is a surprising, inspiring portrait of a great museum, its hidden treasures, and the people who make it tick, by one of its most intimate observers.

As leaves assume redder hues, Governor Adrian Di Bisceglie guides our discussion of “The Women” by Kristin Hannah on Oct. 10.

Women can be heroes. When 20-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares herself to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path. “The Women” is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. For reservations for monthly MAC Book Club meetings, contact Book Club chair Dr. Genie McKee at evmckee@gmail.com

MILITARY HISTORY CLUB SHIFTS ATTENTION TO THE COLD WAR

Tuesday, Sept. 24 | 11:30 a.m. | Downtown Clubhouse

As summer heat cools into autumn chill, the Military History Club turns its attention to the Cold War in welcoming a Zoom appearance by Anthony Tucker-Jones, author of “Churchill – Cold War Warrior.” After a career in the British

intelligence community, Tucker-Jones established himself as a respected defense writer and military historian. For many years he was the terrorism and security correspondent for Intersec – The Journal of International Security.

He is a highly prolific author, feature and scriptwriter, with hundreds of articles published in print and online for a wide

range of publishers and media outlets. He had over 60 books published, some of which have been translated into a dozen languages. A regular public speaker, TuckerJones has appeared on podcasts, radio and television, including a major series for Netflix.

Tolliver is an HR director by day and moonlights as an HR consultant by night, unraveling the mysteries of the corporate world one employee issue at a time. She sifts through workplace drama like a detective solving a juicy mystery novel. In her past life, she proudly bore the title of attorney, battling it out in courtrooms and boardrooms, and has transitioned to a new phase in helping others navigate the legal landscape. She also wrangles four kids who have taught her more about

negotiation and diplomacy than any law school ever could. Hear Tolliver’s insights by registering for the upcoming meeting on the MAC app or call 314-539-4470

THE MISSOURI ATHLETIC CLUB HALL OF FAME:

Where Legends of the MAC Live On

“ATHLETIC IS OUR MIDDLE NAME”

Founded in 1903, the Missouri Athletic Club has stood as a beacon of athletic and social engagement in St. Louis for over a century. From its early days, the Club’s has been closely intertwined with the development of sports in the region and across the nation. In fact, the Club played a significant role in the 1904 Olympics - the first Games ever held in the United States. MAC athletes and officials not only competed in these historic Games, but the Club itself hosted visitors from around the globe who came to experience the Olympics in St. Louis.

In 1993, 90 years after its founding, the Missouri Athletic Club established its Hall of Fame to honor individuals who have distinguished themselves in the field or in the development of athletics. Members can submit nominations, which are then carefully reviewed by the Hall of Fame Committee. The selected honorees are celebrated at a special banquet in the Missouri Room, and their portraits are enshrined in the Hall of Fame Room on the 4th Floor of the Sportsman’s Club. The Hall of Fame includes categories such as individual athletes, teams, coaches, distinguished service, and inspiration.

A standout moment in MAC History came in 2003 during the Club’s Centennial celebration when the legendary Stan “the Man” Musial was inducted as the “Athlete of the Century.”

Today, the Club’s commitment to athletic excellence is as strong as ever. With state-ofthe-art facilities and vibrant community, the Club offers something for athletes of all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, the MAC is the place where anyone can pursue their athletic passions.

GET CARE FASTER

Did you know that you may not need a prescription for physical therapy?

It’s called direct access, and it empowers you to be your own health care advocate. You may be able to be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without a physician’s prescription.*

This means you can start treatment more quickly to restore your strength, regain your skills and reduce any pain. Depending upon the diagnosis, your therapist at SSM Health Physical Therapy may recommend that you follow up with a physician or other licensed health care professional before beginning your treatment.

Getting therapy first may help you:

• Save time

• Save money

• Expedite treatment

• Avoid opioids

• Prevent surgery

If your physician does prescribe physical therapy, you are not obligated to receive physical therapy in any specific facility. You have the right to choose where you want to go.

When choosing the right physical therapy provider, SSM Health Physical Therapy offers:

• Therapists who are licensed by the state and many hold advanced certifications.

• Participation with most insurance plans, which may help to minimize any out-ofpocket expenses.

• Submission of claims to your insurance company and help estimating any personal financial responsibilities.

• Examples of comments our patients provided so that you may learn more about their experiences with our care.

• Accreditation by the Joint Commission, which ensures the highest level of quality and patient safety.

Remember:

You are the most important member of your health care team and are free to choose the rehabilitation provider that can best help you meet your goals.

COACH MAGGIE’S TIPS

EATING BEFORE WORKOUTS

EATING BEFORE YOUR WORKOUT

Your body primarily burns fat and carbohydrates during exercise, using stored energy for fuel. For short cardio workouts, eating beforehand isn’t always necessary. However, exercising on an empty stomach can lead to muscle tissue breakdown, which converts into glucose for energy—a process that can negatively impact your metabolism and increase injury risk.

The timing of a pre-workout meal is a personal choice. If you eat two to three hours before, you can have a more complex meal containing protein, fat, and fiber. If you eat within an hour of your workout, opt for something that digests quickly to avoid cramps and sluggishness.

PRE-WORKOUT SNACKS

F 30-60 minutes before: Lighter snacks (e.g., fruits, yogurt)

F 1-2 hours before: More substantial snack with complex carbs and proteins

CARBOHYDRATE-FOCUSED SNACKS

F Small banana: Rich in carbs and potassium, helps muscle function

F 1/2 cup oatmeal: Slow-releasing carbs; add fruit, nut butter, and protein powder

F Whole grain toast with 1 tsp honey: Easy-to-digest carbs

F Rice cakes with 1 tbsp nut butter: Protein and healthy fats fiber, and protein

PROTEIN-FOCUSED SNACKS

F 3/4 cup Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with berries: High in protein and antioxidants

F Protein shake: Quick protein boost

F 2 boiled eggs: High-quality protein

PLAN MEALS

Time your exercise around meals to feel nourished. Some people can eat a full meal and exercise 20-30 minutes later; others may need two to three hours to digest. If you exercise between meals, there’s usually no need for an additional snack before a cardio workout. Plan your workout before your next meal to ensure you have adequate energy from your previous meal.

MORNING EXERCISE

In the morning, your glycogen stores (stored carbs) are mostly depleted. Eating a little something before a workout can provide extra fuel, especially for high-intensity exercise. For early speed workouts or high-intensity intervals, eating beforehand can help you push harder. If you’re doing moderate exercise, you may not need to eat before your workout.

LEARN YOUR BODY

If you’re hungry and low on energy before exercising, a small snack might help you perform better. For workouts longer than 60-90 minutes, especially in the morning, eating beforehand is beneficial. For afternoon or evening workouts, proper

meals throughout the day should provide sufficient energy. However, when weight training, consuming extra calories can help optimize results and build strength. Post-workout snacks are also important for muscle recovery.

POST-WORKOUT SNACKS

F Fruit & nuts with low-fat Greek yogurt or cottage cheese: Wards off hunger

F Roasted turkey and cheese sandwich on whole grain bread: High in fiber, vitamins, and minerals; stabilizes blood sugar

F Protein shake (Phormula1): Mix with 6-8 oz. low-fat milk or water; blend with ice, fruit, chia seeds, and cinnamon
