s the summer really almost over? For our family, the thought of summer ending is bittersweet. Whether enjoying the pool out West or meeting before a Cardinals game in the Jack Buck Grill, the MAC plays an important role in enhancing my family’s summer fun. Although the summer brings many family memories, returning to a normal “schedule” has its advantages (and hopefully 5-10 pounds of weight loss for this member). Thankfully, Chef Grant at West has introduced an updated menu full of healthy, delicious choices. Look for additional dining options at West coming soon, including two new offerings on Sundays. A fantastic brunch will be served and a Sunday night dinner option will soon be available. Did you know the MAC has more than 20 Clubs within the Club (CWC’s)? No matter your hobby, passion or interest, the MAC has a CWC that fits your taste. Throughout this year, I will highlight a different CWC; this month it is the Bike, Run and Triathlon Club. Every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. the group enjoys a 3-5 mile run Downtown and then a cocktail or two in the Art Lounge. Saturday mornings, they meet out West at 7:30 a.m. for a one to two hour ride. This

CWC’s signature event is the MAC Sprint Triathlon, scheduled this year for Sept. 14. This is a great event for the seasoned or novice athlete alike. David Smith chairs this CWC and he can be contacted at dapsmith@smithpatrickllc. com for more information. The MAC has a long history with golf in St. Louis. Our golf program allows members to play some of the nicest public and private courses in St. Louis. Make plans now to participate in THE golf event of the year – the 6th annual MAC Classic on Monday, Aug. 26 at Glen Echo Country Club. Enjoy a day of fun and friendly competition with fellow MAC members while showing support for your Club. Thanks to Chairman Scott Engelbrecht along with Past President Mark Belew and Tim Shocklee for leading this important effort. All proceeds go to the Preservation Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to raising funds to maintain and improve our historic Downtown Clubhouse. The St. Louis Rams are preparing for what promises to be an outstanding season. They open the regular season with a Sept. 8 home game against the Arizona Cardinals. There is NO better pre-game spot than the MAC, and the home schedule is exciting, including the 49ers, Bears, Saints, and Titans. Season parking spots are still available and the pre-game brunch is a great way to start your game-day experience. The MAC has also teamed up with radio station 590 to host their pre-game tailgate parties in the parking lot along Broadway, so your Club certainly is the place to be this fall. Bring your friends, family and business associates down to enjoy the festive atmosphere at the MAC. While you are enjoying the last month of the pool at West or all of the sports action Downtown with the Rams and the Cardinals, keep in mind that this is an ideal time to introduce prospective members to the Club. The Platinum Partnership has been a catalyst in growing our membership ranks. In the first seven months of 2013, more than 150 new members have joined the Club. Word is spreading about all of the tremendous benefits for the current member proposing, and for the new member. The number of Platinum Partners is growing every day. Are you Platinum yet? West What an exciting summer we have had at the West Clubhouse! The new pool deck is as busy as ever with revamped snack bar menus and a weekend outdoor grill area on that has been very well received. We had a rocking 4th of July weekend with a packed pool, cold beverages and excellent barbeque buffet - Everyone had a blast! Our happy hour on July 18 was a hit and had cool items like the “adult snow cone.” Come check them out yourself on Aug. 15 from 4 - 7 p.m., you won’t be disappointed!

After lots of member feedback, I am proud to announce we will be open seven days a week! Sundays will be part of our new fall and winter programming. Beginning Sept. 8, we will be doing an “a la carte” brunch menu with rotating seasonal items, featuring something new every week! In the evenings at the start of fall, we will be offering the family night pasta buffet with a chef-attended pasta station. Beginning Thursday, Sept. 5, we will be hosting a throwback Thursday menu in our fine dining room with early American and classical French menu items served in the early 1900s, when the Club was first established. We will be pairing handcrafted artisanal cocktails and libations with this old-new menu as well. Beginning Saturday, Sept. 14, we will features will be “Prime Rib and Seafood Nights,” where we will offer thick juicy cuts of certified Black Angus prime rib, house-roasted to perfection. Soccerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Young Stars on Display at MAC All-Star Games

Eighty of the most talented high school senior soccer players in the St. Louis area capped off their prep careers by playing in the UMB Bank All-Star Games, hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club. Most of the talented players who competed in the 29th annual showcase at the Soccer Park will continue to play soccer in college. In the girls game, Riley Kerr (Fort Zumwalt East) scored two goals and added an assist to lead the North to a thrilling 5-4 comeback victory over the South. Kerr was named Most Valuable Player for the North squad and Angela Beck (Lindbergh) earned MVP honors for the South. The boys game was a defensive battle, with the South squad prevailing 1-0. Henry Wynd (Marquette H.S.) knocked in the lone goal with less than five minutes to play to lead the South to the victory. South goalkeeper Sean Clancy (Summit) made several spectacular saves in leading his team to the shutout victory and earned MVP honors. Bradley

(posted on the Knot on 3/22/2013) It was a no-brainer to host our wedding reception here since my husband’s family had been members for over thirty years, however I would highly recommend it to any couple. Between the AMAZING STAFF, comfortable and clean guest rooms and stunning atmosphere, it exceeded all of our expectations. 1. How do you use the Club? Primarily for business. And use it we do. Why? Outstanding food, outstanding adult beverages, outstanding coffee, outstanding meeting facilities, outstanding event organizers, outstanding hotel, outstanding athletic facilities, outstanding masseuses, outstanding barbershop, outstanding front desk staff. But what differentiates the MAC from the hundreds of St. Louis facilities who offer identical amenities? It's the people. They know us, they anticipate our needs, they are creative, they are professionals, they are accurate, they take pride in their collective work, they go the extra mile without being asked. Dear MAC Members: “When the lights go out in the City and the sun shines on the Bay” … that classic old song was playing in my head as Allison and I embarked upon our recent Journey. We had the privilege of staying at the Olympic Club while attending the City Athletic Club Managers (CACM) annual meeting and symposium in San Francisco. This annual meeting gives us managers an opportunity to meet and share best practices, compare notes and socialize while visiting some of the greatest Clubs in the country. The Pacific Union Club was the other host club, sitting high on the hill and the word “incredible” comes up short in trying to explain our experience while there. Our hosts were gracious and of course trying to one up each other which was all to our benefit. I love that part! But, we did get down into the nitty gritty discussing everything from social media in clubs to club trends, cloud computing and of course data/benchmarking and best practices. The quality of people in the room is impressive and I am truly honored to be

sitting therein, representing the Missouri Athletic Club. It was also rewarding to share in conversations and find that we are doing so many things the right way here at the MAC. It was even better knowing that all these managers and sister clubs are our partners where you, your families and associates are always welcome and will be treated in world-class style. These reciprocal relationships are such a tremendous benefit of your membership. Many of you know this value well and have enjoyed these arrangements for years. And, for those who have not yet enjoyed any of our sister clubs, go ahead and plan your next few “get-a-way” trips around cool cities and our partner clubs. There are so many opportunities and we are more than happy to help with the arrangements anytime. Just call me and we’ll get you set up. We have been having a lot of fun producing these videos and creating “Stars” of many of our members. They are all there for you to enjoy and share as we

spread the good “MAC” news, and all the fun here at the Club. And, if you have not liked us on Facebook and are a user please do so. I personally love Facebook for keeping up with our girls and friends. I even posted a few photos from a couple days of vacation that we tagged on the backside of the CACM trip. We slid up to Napa and Sonoma Valleys with some friends just because it seemed like the right thing to do since we were just down the street. The good news is they have both red and white wine up there, so Allison was very happy. My quest of course was to search out great varieties at great prices that we can feature here at the MAC. Mission accomplished, and I will share more on that topic later. Cheers! Well, we all know that it is fun to travel but it’s always good to get home and back at it. The MAC is on the move with our membership growing and business booming – get your friends in on the action and be sure to join in on our Rams Tailgate parties in the Downtown parking lot before every home game. Sprint Triathlon Swim, bike and run for fun at the fifth annual MAC Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the West Clubhouse. All MAC athletes are welcome to compete. If you’re an experienced tri-athlete, this is your chance to show your stuff to fellow Club members. If you have never “tried a tri,” this will be a fun event to challenge yourself. The race begins with a 300-yard swim, followed by a 12-mile bike and concludes with a 3-mile run. The transition area will open at 6:30 a.m. A mandatory safety briefing will be held at 7 a.m., with the race beginning at 7:30 a.m. All members 16 and older are welcome to participate. Massage Can Be a Treatment for Migraines by Mark Friedman, BS, LMT

New evidence points to benefits of massage for migraine headache sufferers. A study conducted by S.P. Lawler and L.D. Cameron, of the University of Auckland, showed the effectiveness of massage as a treatment for migraine sufferers in the acute phase of an attack, and as a preventive treatment. This non-pharmalogically based treatment showed that participants in the study had greater improvements in migraine frequency and sleep quality during the intervention weeks, and three follow-up weeks. Stress, one trigger of headaches, can be reduced or managed by massage. It can help reduce pain and make you feel good. According to a Franklin Institute study on the human brain and stress, massage stimulates the body’s release of chemical endorphins. Endorphins are considered 14

the body’s natural painkillers because they have a similar effect of opiates like morphine. A study in the journal, Psychooncology in October 2008, showed that, “a significant reduction in [the stress chemical] cortisol could be safely achieved through massage with associated improvement in psychological well-being.” Further, the International Journal of Neuroscience showed that massage could decrease the occurrence of headaches, sleep disturbances and symptoms of distress while increasing serotonin levels in adults with migraines. Increasing serotonin is the goal of many pain-relieving medications. See your doctor if you suspect your or a family member’s migraine pain and consider massage as a supportive treatment to a migraine pain.

Rowing to the Gold

The Saint Louis Rowing Club struck GOLD at the Youth Nationals Championships for the FIRST time in club history! MAC member Tom Kendrick and his team rowed their way a national championship title. The Men’s Youth 4+ team won at the U.S. Rowing Youth Nationals Championships at Oak Ridge, Tenn. The National Championship was an all USA event drawing from 119 cities and 30 states. All of the competing athletes qualified to participate at Regional Championships around the country (18 in US) in recent weeks. The absolute “best” athletes in the sport were represented at this event – the culmination of the spring rowing season. The team came in first coming out of the first heat, sending them directly to the semi-finals. They then finished first in the finals round. The title is even more

significant as the St. Louis Rowing Club has never won gold. Typically, coast teams dominate rowing competitions, but this team came out on top. Tom has spent a lot of years cross training at the MAC while rowing specific training has been at Creve Coeur Lake and the Boathouse that is shared with Washington University. Rowing is one of the best sports for all-around fitness, so cross training is critical in achieving the highest levels in the sport. Strength training, aerobic and core work are all part of a rowers regular workouts. Congratulations on your achievement, Tom and teammates!

On Memorial Day weekend, the senior squash Olympics was played at the Jewish Community Centre. Two MAC members did an amazing job in their respective age groups. Keith Vidal won a gold medal in the 50-64’s and Richard Nix won a gold medal in the over 75’s squash AND badminton, and also the bronze in the over 65’s. Congratulations, guys!

It’s hard to believe that summer has come and passed. The kids will be headed back to school in just a few short weeks. As summer dwindles down, they will reflect on how they spent their summer. If they participated in summer sports camps at the West Clubhouse, they undoubtedly made new friends, learned new sports and had a great summer! Summer sports camps at West are a favorite amongst our youngest MAC members. A typical day of sports camp started with a rousing game of kickball followed by a high-speed game of “sharks and minnows.” Throughout the rest of the day, campers participated in a variety of sports such as racquetball, squash and tennis, baseball, flag football, volleyball, fencing and martial arts! The camps were led by top pros in their prospective sports. Campers learned the fundamentals an athlete needs to succeed in their favorite sports. Campers also learned life skills such as sportsmanship, personal responsibility and respect for others. To build these skills, Coach Eric Saxton, who coordinated the summer sports camps, expected the children to hold doors for one another, be quiet and attentive when receiving instructions, bring their swimsuits for the pool, and most of all—have fun! No day at summer sports camp was complete without a trip to the pool! Campers had a splashing good time in the pool after playing their favorite sports! Don’t miss out on summer camp - There are still two sessions left! Summer camps will be held on Aug. 5 – 9 and Aug. 12 – 16. MAC Summer Fun Dive-In Night at the Movies

4th of July Fun Members and their guests had a prime spot to get the first view of the 136th Veiled Prophet Parade. The parade route began right in front of the Downtown Clubhouse and featured colorful floats, marching bands and other attractions. The restaurants were busy throughout the day and served as the ideal destination for members to enjoy a good meal, while taking a break from the heat. The West pool was also popular and featured a delicious barbeque lunch!

Catch a movie from the coolest seat in town, the West Clubhouse Pool. Bring a floatation device and dive on in to experience a movie like the old drive-in theaters - a great way to share a fun evening with friends and family. Begins at dusk. This FREE event includes popcorn and soda. A delicious dinner buffet will be offered prior to the movie. Friday, Aug. 16 Movie at Dusk Event is free to attend. by Kenny Powell It has been an exciting season of junior tennis at the Missouri Athletic Club with many new faces amongst staff and players, new programming for junior players and the “graduation” of our high school seniors who will move on to begin their collegiate tennis careers. We officially concluded this year’s indoor junior tennis season with the 1st Annual MAC Tennis Awards Banquet on Saturday, May 18. I am very excited to welcome two great tennis players to our summer staff, Ben Pettinarri and Bobby Kidera. Ben Pettinarri is a native of Cannes, France and will be focused primarily on the Performance tennis programs. His experience in developing nationally ranked players and his passion are going to be great assets to our juniors. Bobby Kidera, a recent SLU alum, played #1 singles for their men’s tennis team and was recently named to the All Conference Team. Welcome Ben and Bobby! Lockers Available on 5M Downtown

Relax in the comfort and privacy of the 5M locker room Downtown after a tough workout. The Men’s Locker room has space available and features lockers adorned with a personalized nameplate. The locker room also features two lounge areas, complete with flat screen TVs and loungers for relaxing. A single use hot tub and dry heat sauna are inside the locker room, in addition to the steam room. The locker room is attached to the men’s 5M deli, which is open for lunch Monday through Friday. The 5M locker room has a fraction of the total number of lockers in the other two locker rooms Downtown, making for a quieter and more private experience. There is an up charge of $20 per month for all members in the 5M locker room, but the amenities make the extra charge worth it. Don’t lose your favorite shoes Have a pair of shoes that are in need of some TLC? Shoe shining and repair is offered at the Downtown Athletic Department and in the Downtown Barbershop. Shoes can be dropped off Downtown, at the Athletic Department on Mon-Fri from 4 a.m.-5 p.m., or the Barbershop, weekdays from 9 a.m. Noon. Ladies Interclub Men’s 55+ Wrap Up

By Scott Stutz - MAC Tennis Professional The 2013 MAC Ladies Interclub tennis teams had fantastic seasons this year. The MAC “A” team flirted with first place throughout the season, eventually settling into sixth place of 15 teams. The MAC “B” team had a solid finish, winning two of three playoff matches, capturing second place in Tier 2 of the STL Women’s Indoor Tennis League. Award recipients at the end-of-the-season Ladies Interclub luncheon, held at the West Clubhouse were Natalie Hoffmann - MVP; Karen Steirs - Most Improved; Desiree Wojciechowski - Most Punctual; Terese PortellSportsmanship and Debbie Schmitt-Most Competitive The 2013 indoor season ranks as one of the best! As participation continues to grow, and witnessing the enjoyment of our players competing at a high level, I am proud to be the Ladies Interclub Coach of the MAC! Men’s 55+ league also had a very solid 2013 indoor season. Like the ladies, participation is growing at a fast rate, which led to the team having NO defaults this past indoor season, a feat coach Patrick McNally is very proud of. Good luck next season!

Fall Basketball Leagues

As summer begins to wind down, fall is right around the corner. Temperatures will begin to drop and the leaves will change colors. The season also marks the start of the fall basketball leagues, which begin the week of Sept. 16.Make plans now to play in one of the Club’s three leagues. The Open League will play on Monday and Tuesday evenings at the Downtown Clubhouse. The Over-40 League will play Downtown on Wednesday nights. On Thursdays, the action shifts to the West Clubhouse for another Open League. If you play in a Downtown league, you are also welcome to play in the West league. The cost is $60 per league. Battles on the Court for Charity

A battle is brewing on the West Clubhouse tennis courts. Get your front row seats at on Friday, Sept. 6, to see some sensational matches. Matches will be played by tennis pros, and for the first time, audience members will be able to play as well! Exhibition matches will include Men’s Singles, Junior Performance Players, Mixed Doubles, Men’s Doubles and a Spectator Challenge. Dinner and drinks will be served courtside, which will be a memorable experience for attendees. The annual Tennis Exhibition is sponsored by the MAC Charitable Society for Children to raise money for the 2013 charities: Boys Hope Girls Hope, College Bound and Voices for Children. Representatives from the three charities, as well as members of the CSC will be on hand to share information about the charities. All members and their guests are welcome to attend. West Child Care will be open until 8 p.m. Donations for the 2013 charities will graciously be accepted. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the MAC Charitable Society for Children. Breakfast at Wimbledon

The 1st Annual Breakfast at Wimbledon was a “smashing success!” Held at the West Clubhouse, this first choice event for members and guests had a fantastic turnout with 40+ people for tennis and breakfast. Guests not familiar to the MAC were exposed to the premier indoor facility in St. Louis. Third place winner Richard Striler explained the energy of the event. “Excitement ran rapid throughout the day,” he said. “I had so much fun,” said Allie Zumwalt. Bill Bouchein shared similar sentiments, saying the event was, “Awesome. I had a great time.” As the day came to an end, prizes were awarded to the Top 3 who won the most overall games. 1st place: Jennifer Griesedieck, 2nd place: Todd Keske, 3rd place: Richard Striler.

Parents need to know what questions to ask before making a commitment. Here are some questions to ask yourself when you’re deciding on the right private school for your children. How will the school suit me or my child down the road? When you visit the school, be sure to consider the years ahead. Find the school that is the best suited for your family, which will stand the test of time. Your child will grow and develop in the school, and you want to be aware of how the school will change, as your child changes. Does the school change from a gentle, nurturing lower school to a tough, competitive middle and upper school? Gauge the

temperature of all the divisions before selecting a school. Is my child a good fit for the school? While you may be tempted to gain admission to the most competitive school possible, be sure that your child is a good fit for the school and that it won’t be too challenging—or too simple—down the road. CWC SPOTLIGHT: MAC Bridge Club

The Bridge Club meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at the West Clubhouse, in the Card Room the large banquet room, upon availability. This invitational sanctioned duplicate bridge club continues to thrive under the director, Janet Vontz. The game begins at 6:15 p.m. and ends by 9:45 p.m. Even, during the inclement weather, duplicate bridge players ventured out to play. Janet brings state of the art bridge equipment including electronic scoring devices for each table that send data to a laptop using wireless remote technology. Results, including winners, are available thirty seconds after the last score is entered by the players, so everyone knows the final tally before they leave the room. The players receive an email the next morning which includes detailed information regarding each hand, the contracts played by their competitors, the optimum contract available, potential sacrifices for defensive purposes, match points for each participant, and points of interest about the game. Master points are awarded. However players do not have to be members of ACBL (American Contract Bridge League) to join in the game. Members and nonmembers are appreciative of the opportunity to play their favorite game and earn master points in the lovely setting of West.

On the Road Again with the Forever Young Club By Governor Judith Hanses

A warm and sunny day greeted members of the Forever Young Club for a cruise down I-55 to visit the Crown Valley, west of St. Genevieve. The Crown Valley Winery was our first stop, where we toured very modern winemaking facilities and gladly tasted several varieties of wine. We learned that Crown Valley Winery fills bottles for other wineries in the area, and also distills alcohol. The pastoral scenery visible from the expansive balcony made us think of California’s Napa Valley until we spotted several buffalo in the nearby pasture. Vinophiles in the group proclaimed the wines were, “The best they had tasted in Missouri.” Following a hearty BBQ lunch at the winery,

WELCOMES RETURN OF RYE WHISKEY “Whiskey, rye whiskey,” Tex Ritter wailed in the 1930s song, “If I Don’t Have my Rye Whiskey I Think I Might Die.” No problem in St. Louis, Tex, as we now have our own rye distillery. The label STIL630 is being developed by a group of businessmen led by Dave Weglarz. A very popular drink before prohibition, rye almost disappeared afterward. But now rye is enjoying a renaissance, with names such as Jack Daniels in the game. we headed on down the road to experience the Crown Valley Brew Haus. We found a large brewpub with a cordial atmosphere, great beers to taste and a charming museum containing historical brewing equipment. Some relaxed in the pub with a cup of coffee while the brew aficionados sampled the products. After learning that Crown Valley beers are available at several St. Louis locations, a happy crowd boarded the bus for the trip home to the West Clubhouse. Our next trip will be Aug. 27, when we will cruise from St. Louis to Grafton, Ill., on an authentic paddlewheel riverboat. Oh, the places we go!

Former Ram & Honorary Chair D’Marco Farr and hundreds of participants were on hand for the 2013 Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event on Saturday, June 8. The walk started and was finished at the Downtown Clubhouse. The event asks men to literally walk one mile in women’s shoes to support the YWCA’s efforts to stop sexual violence. MAC members and several area dignitaries were also on hand donning their pretty pumps. The MAC needs a new train for the Downtown Christmas display. Komen Race for the Cure

This year, Team MAC again participated in the St. Louis Komen Race for the Cure. The 15th annual event had over 40,000 participants. Team MAC raised a total of $950, which contributed to the more than $2.1 million raised by St. Louisans on race day, Saturday, June 15. Members and guests arrived bright and early to collect their t-shirts and prepare for the race.

THIRD QUARTER FINANCIAL REPORT

The Club’s fiscal year runs from September 1 through August 31. The third quarter of our 2012-2013 fiscal year ended May 31, 2013. During the first nine months of our fiscal year, revenue from departmental operations totaled $6,690,150. This total was $146,149 better than plan and $332,427 more than the prior year. Membership dues reached $5,304,130. This total was $113,565 less than plan and $98,029 behind last year. Total resident members in May 2013 stood at 1,400 with total dues-paying members of 2,252; the corresponding totals for May 2012 were 1,434 and 2,292, respectively. We had 830 Diamond Club members in May 2013, which compares to 1,079 last May. There were 452 Platinum Partners in May 2013, which compares to 176 last May. Unallocated costs have accumulated to $5,701,451 so far this year. This total is $73,517 greater than plan and $76,408 more than last year. Net operating cash flow (net income before depreciation) of $878,350 was 28

generated during the first nine months of our fiscal year. This amount is $189,652 less than plan and $153,071 less than last year. Capital expenditures during the first three quarters of our fiscal year totaled $409,566. Of the amount spent so far this year, $124,514 has been spent Downtown and $285,052 has been spent at MAC West. The Club ended the quarter with cash of $50,454 on its balance sheet. The line of credit balance at the end of the May 2013 was $74,686. As of the end of May, the Club had long-term bank debt of $6,708,170 and MAC Redevelopment Corp., which owns our garage, had long-term debt of $1,378,732 for a total of $8,086,902. We are currently paying down our debt by approximately $62,000 per month. Ron Hauser is this month’s featured artist in the MAC Art Gallery, at the Downtown Clubhouse. “The Canvas Cowboy” as he has been called is a 64-yearold grandpa, western painter and sculpture that has not only found a new career late in life, but has added meaning and purpose as a Care giver to a grandson and others in need. Ron’s newly found career in the last few years has focused primarily on The American Cowboy and Native American way of life. His

kinship to the Old West was through early childhood experiences in Oklahoma, Texas and Southwestern Missouri along with his Native American Heritage. Giclee canvas prints of Ron’s oil painting impressions soon were selling at shows, local art fairs and small galleries in the St. Louis area.
