New Art & Music :-) Jordan Art Walk

5

The Jordan Art Walk consists of seven sculptures strategically placed between Sportsman's Park and Memorial Park, integrated with the new ‘Joining Jordan Boardwalk’. The plan is for more sculptures to be added over the next two years. The sculptures will then be rotated out after three years, so that this will become an evolving exhibit. This public art project is an exciting collaboration between the Jordan River Arts Council, the City of East Jordan, the Friends of the Jordan River, the East Jordan Area Chamber of Commerce and Active Recovery Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine. Pick up a brochure/map and have fun "Exploring Nature Through Art"!

Lakes & Rivers "Said the river: imagine everything you can imagine, then keep on going." ~ Mary Oliver

11

The Jordan River The Jordan River is a 24.9-mile-long stream, the largest tributary of Lake Charlevoix. The Jordan's headwaters rise from springs in the upper Jordan River Valley northeast of Mancelona in Antrim County. The Jordan River was the first river to be designated in Michigan's Natural Rivers Program. The Jordan River is well known for its world-class brook trout fishing and for its scenic canoe trips. The headwaters are accessible by many foot and snowmobile trails.

“A lake carries you into recesses of feeling otherwise impenetrable.” ~ William Wordsworth

Lake Charlevoix Lake Charlevoix was once voted the second best lake in America in a USA Today poll, behind only Lake Tahoe. Being awarded this honor is partly due to the many forms of recreation the lake provides, including swimming, kayaking, sailing, fishing, diving, boating, water skiing, and just relaxing on the beach. Lake Charlevoix is also one of Michigan’s largest and most magnificent lakes. It is the 3rd largest lake in the state in terms of surface area, but its shoreline length far exceeds that of any other inland lake in Michigan. If you kayak the entire shoreline of Lake Charlevoix, you will have traversed 60 miles!

Chain of Lakes Water Trail

The Chain of Lakes is a highlight to our region and it is no wonder. These connected lakes are diverse paddling opportunities on some of northern Michigan’s clear pristine lakes. The Chain of Lakes Water Trail is one of only eight state-designated water trails and the only water trail in Northern Michigan. This non-motorized water trail has over 80 miles of routes to explore and something for all types of paddlers. The Upper Chain is made up of smaller lakes and is a great experience for beginner paddlers. Paddle through a mile of protected shoreline, check out an island, or just enjoy the calm and quiet of paddling through the crystal waters. You can begin, end or pass through the three lakeside communities of Ellsworth, Central Lake, and Bellaire where you will find food, camping, and all the other amenities you need to make your trip complete. The Lower Chain includes larger lakes like Torch Lake and Elk Lake for experienced paddlers looking for an adventure. Explore the serene Grass River Natural Area, find a sunken ship, or just enjoy the turquoise waters of Torch Lake. In Bellaire, Alden, and Elk Rapids you will find all you need to enjoy your time on the water. While you are here, join Paddle Antrim for a local paddling class or event on the water. For more information on the Chain of Lakes Water Trail, classes/events or local rentals go to: www.paddleantrim.com. And check the Membership Section of this Guide or go to: www.ejchamber.org for lots of other watercraft rentals!

Pinney Bridge

Landslide Overlook

Deadman's Hill

Jordan Valley Pathway The Jordan Valley Pathway is an 18-mile hiking trail in the Jordan River Valley. The pathway winds through the Mackinaw State Forest along the Jordan River. This scenic valley is well worth a trip in any season, however fall colors are noteworthy due to its rich hardwood forests. Its looped trail system is mixed with moderate to rugged topography, providing excellent opportunities for hikers and backpackers. The full pathway is a good two-day hike. Backpackers can stay at the Pinney Bridge State Campground, located near the trail’s halfway point (dispersed camping is not allowed in the Jordan Valley). Hikers can conveniently start and end at the same place if completing a smaller loop or the whole trail. This trail houses four different trailheads that allow access to the pathway, with the main trailhead located at Deadman’s Hill Overlook. No biking is allowed on the Jordan Valley Pathway.

14

There is nothing like the Jordan Valley in the Fall! Whether you're in a car, on a motorcycle, riding a bike or hiking, we think you'll agree with us ... We OWN the Fall! Pick up our Color Tour map. Also, go West on the Breezeway to Atood to our Farm Markets for Apples, Pumpkins, Wines, Cider, Pies & Donuts. And go East on the Breezeway to Boyne Mountain to see the colors from the top of the chairlift or the zipline.

Brown's Creek Pathway

In the heart of East Jordan, this new 5-mile mountain bike trail enjoys flow sections near beautiful Brown’s Creek as well as short steep climbs. Ideal for all level of cyclists. All of this is near downtown and local schools.

CITY OF EAST JORDAN

Where River, Lake and Friendly People Meet In addition to City Hall operations, the East Jordan city government departments include 24-hour police protection, a devoted volunteer fire department, public works that includes public water and sewer services, parks/recreation, membership in the Jordan Valley Ambulance Authority and a very active Downtown Development Authority working on multiple projects and partnership efforts. East Jordan is very proud of where we’re going and where we’ve been. Teamwork is a key component in everything we do. Leadership and collaborations between organizations, businesses, schools and government operations are strong in East Jordan and continue to build a resilient community.

Tom Cannon City Administrator

BANKS TOWNSHIP

Alex Busman Banks Township Supervisor

Banks Township is a rural jewel in the north end of Antrim County. The spring and summer months bring a gorgeous green to our rolling hills; the Chain of Lakes provide ample water recreation opportunities; and winter offers up a crisp change of scenery on the lakes. Play on the Lake Michigan shoreline at Banks Township Park or walk and bike ride the non-motorized trails at Antrim Creek Natural Area. Whatever your recreational itch, Banks Township is a great destination to scratch it.

VILLAGE OF ELLSWORTH

Founded in 1881 and incorporated as a village in 1938, Ellsworth is located on the scenic Breezeway and Chain of Lakes. If you are seeking a great place to live, retire, or play, Ellsworth is the place. With its park system, waterways, scenic roads, and snowmobile trails, Ellsworth is a great area to take advantage of Michigan’s Natural Resources during the four seasons.

ATWOOD Hugh Campbell Village President

58

Atwood is home to several farm markets, a winery, 3 restaurants, a John Deere mecca, a motel, a famous tiny chapel and an 18-hole golf course. Oh, and a 156 acre public natural area is located on Lake Michigan which has some of the best sunsets in the State!

Big Happenings in EJ JOINING JORDAN

While there has long been a bridge across the ordan River, it was not pedestrian-friendly, and the result was that people would get in their cars and drive from one side of town to another. Or not. Either way, the limits of its usefulness divided the city into two parts, making casual strolling or shopping throughout the downtown very difficult. The new pedestrian-friendly bridge, though seemingly a small change, made a big impact on the community. It connected two parks, created a boardwalk on formerly blighted property, and prompted the creation of a new boat launch.

20

SPORTSMAN'S PARK PROJECT Projects the city hopes to pursue in the park include:

• Improving/upgrading the bathroom facilities, including improvements to barrier-free access • Creating a sidewalk connection to the Jordan River Watershed Center • Improving existing sidewalks to the boardwalk • Creating an improved landing site for non-motorized watercraft and a gravel vehicle drive to access it. • Modifications to the existing boardwalk for an accessible kayak launch • Enhancements to the existing fishing pier, including accessibility improvements • Creating six car/trailer parking spaces on the east side of the park

The Shoe Club EJ SEED TO SALAD

This year's EJ Shoe Club project is to enhance the Elementary School's community garden by utilizing the space more effectively throughout the year and improving it in other ways to make the space as valuable and efficient as possible. The Shoe Club’s plan includes: • Revitalizing an indoor growing space that is connected to the school. • Installing a hoop house that will serve as a larger and more cost-efficient growing space. • Installing two composting systems that will reduce food waste from the cafeterias in both the elementary and middle high schools. • Improving the outdoor garden area to better serve as an outdoor classroom. The importance of vegetables and healthy eating will be incorporated into the curriculum as well. Hellos, Goodbyes & Congrats! East Jordan True Value sold to Gill-Roy's

Rob Morgan, Gill-Roy's (New Owner) Dan, Kaye & Dale Miller Missing: Faye Miller

Five years after opening the Charlevoix Ben Franklin store, Donald and Jeanette Miller opened the East Jordan True Value in July 1983. The family and business became a vital part of the community and many of their customers became long-time friends. Donald and Jeanette left the retail legacy to their sons Dan and Dale who worked side by side with their parents and then their wives (Faye and Kaye) and their children. In 2022, the Miller brothers looked retirement in the face and decided to welcome it. They sold East Jordan True Value to Gill-Roy’s Got-it Hardware. We sadly say, "Goodbye and Happy Retirement!" to the Millers; and we excitedly say, "Welcome to East Jordan, Gill-Roy's!" (Thank you to the Charlevoix County News for the photo & history.)

Busy Bridge Antiques & Gifts

Ribbon Cutting at new East Jordan location.

22

After 38 years, we are sad to say goodbye to Sharon Jackson, Linda Snyder, and our beloved Busy Bridge - "an eclectic blend of gifts & antiques, resort wear, gourmet chocolates & bulk candy, made-inMichigan gifts, jewelry, card, East Jordan shirts, baby gift, toys and free gift wrapping." We'll miss you! But Happy Retirement!

The Chamber's 60th!

The East Jordan Area Chamber of Commerce was incorporated in 1960, but since 2020 was the "Covid Year," we are having a belated celebration! Unfortunately, we could find very little information about the history of the Chamber beyond the fact that several of the long-serving officers prior to Mary Faculak were Judy Shea, the late Ginny Carey, and Marie Yettaw. We did find this one great old photo from an article, but don't even know what year it was! So, here's something TO DO! If anyone out there reading this has any "historic" info or photos about the Chamber, please share what you have with us!

EAST JORDAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS Building a foundation with a world class education combined with the small school feel and caring environment that our parents have come to trust, our goal is to provide our students with experiences that will last a lifetime... and memories to share forever. EJPS comprises a vibrant part of the community and takes its job of educating East Jordan’s youth seriously. Thanks to our generous community, the district was recently able to upgrade infrastructural items, replace technology, provide secure entry ways, replace buses, and overhaul the high school gym. In the classrooms, on stage, and on the field of competition, East Jordan students continue to make us proud. We are pleased to boast a wide variety of academic courses, and continue to grow while challenging our students to create, design, build, and apply. While academic studies and preparation is a primary focus, it is also recognized that in order to prepare our students to be well-rounded, productive members of a community, we must encourage them to take pride in all areas of their growth. Whether through athletics, the arts, community service or simply treating others with respect, East Jordan Pride is a commitment to always doing your best.
