About Us
Our Concept
Educate Together is a modern, dynamic charity that is redefining standards in inclusive, learner-centred education. It is providing a long-overdue choice of equality-based primary and second-level schools for thousands of families in Ireland. It is working to transform the learning environment for all pupils so that they are properly prepared for life in the twenty-first century.
Tully National School Educate Together is committed to placing students at the centre of everything they do, supporting each child to achieve their full potential, preparing them to become caring and active members of a modern and culturally diverse society. The school building is created to be acessible to every student and all visitors.
Our Ethical Education curriculum ‘Learn Together’ supports children’s moral and spiritual development and teaches children about different belief systems. They also learn about democracy, human rights and stewardship of our environment. This curriculum has been developed over 35 years in Irish primary schools and is an important part of making Educate Together schools welcoming and inclusive. The Educate Together Charter describes schools that guarantee equality of access and esteem to children irrespective of their social, cultural or religious background, are learner centred in their approach to education and are run as participatory democracies, with respectful partnership between parents, pupils and staff.
Students or even adults who are overresponsive to visual input have difficulty filtering out the varying visual stimulation in a room and is very aware of their surroundings. This causes the them to be easily distracted and in more extreme cases them may feel overwhelmed and highly anxious. We wanted to prevent this by creating signage that was simple, using basic shapes, toned down colours and cohesive typography to minimize sensory overload.

Typography We chose to use a sans serif font as letters can appear less crowded. Sans serif have slightly increased readability compared to serifs. They look good when their size is reduced, and they tend to retain their visual appeal. Avenir which is a geometric typeface is constructed from geometric shapes. This also lends itself to looking more cohesive with the overall visual language.

Colour Palette For the colour palette, we wanted something that was fun and appealing to children, but not too vivid and bright as to overwhelm them. We decided to keep using the exisiting Educate Together colour palette which both had the balance of friendliness and calmness. Using these colours also reinforces the core values of Educate Together as well as their mission. For our secondary colour palette we used alternatives to colours such as white and black, which can appear too dazzling or harsh. We instead used a cream, soft pastel colour and a dark navy to soften the visuals. While contrast can be provided by black text on a white background this is not so beneficial when considering dyslexia, as research confirms that pastel backgrounds accomodate dyslexic users.

Materials We used wood to highlight our concept and logo’s metaphor of building blocks as a foundation of growth for the children, just like how the values of Educate Together encourages children to be the best they can be. Using wood with less grain avoids the user to be distracted by background patterns. The organic aspects of the wood such as it’s warm colour and ties to nature also prompts the user to associate the school with hospitable and welcoming qualities. Using matte materials also reduces the light from glaring on the signage.

For the outdoor signage, we wanted something that was not so condense, bulky and heavy looking. Plinths can look blocky so we decided to use wooden posts with panels attached to allow air through and look more open and spacious. Using the wooden posts allows for the signage to not look too cluttered and overwhelming and create a school atmosphere that was welcoming and not look so intimidating.

For the indoor signage, we wanted to keep it simple and just have some of the shapes on the walls to direct the users to different landmarks. Changing up the scale or angle of the shapes creates a playfulness in the overall atmosphere of the school but doesn’t imply something that is childish and immature. We tried to create a balance that would appeal to students as well as adults who are visiting for the first times they would be the least familiar with the site.
