Renaissance hotel host a Galabeya Party by the Stars for the third annual global day of discovery. Renaissance Hotels hosted it’s third annual global day of discovery on the 26th June, at more than 150 of its hotels around the world. On this day, nearly every Renaissance Hotel globally, gave both hotel guests and members of local communities the opportunity to get out and discover something new, by hosting musical, culinary, art and culturally focused events as well as unique local excursions to showcase the unique stories of each destination. The local contribution of Renaissance Sharm El Sheikh Golden View Beach Resort was a Galabeya Party “under the Stars Event”. This featured a
delicious Egyptian festive dinner by the main swimming pool, followed by a live show featuring different folklore sketches, representing various different Egyptian governorates. The guests enhanced their interaction with the different sketches from the Bedouin, Upper Egypt and the Port Said by dressing tradition-
ally in Galabeyas. It’s August again. Time to turn up the air conditioning, work on your tan, and if you have kids, run out of things for them to do. Half way through the summer break, even the most enthusiastic of beach bunnies are looking for a bit more variety in their lives. Here are some suggestions for things to do with your little angels.
If you travel from Hadaba to Nabq via Peace Road, Halloumy Street is the right hand turn at the top of the hill before Naama Bay. It’s marked by one of those inexplicable “Little Havana” pineapple sculptures and a benzina. Half way down, on the left hand side, is the Pharaonic themed Genena Mall. The ancient Egyptian style sculptures and obelisks on the street side make it pretty hard to miss, but if you’re in Naama at night, the enormous neon sign and “Jumbotron” video screen will help you spot it. Inside, you’ll find various retail outlets and a big children’s area. There are various rides, geared towards younger children (5 to 10 year olds), such as the rocket ride and electric scooters. These are reasonably priced at 15 le a turn (time varies from ride to ride). Additionally, there’s a computer games lounge which costs 10 le per round, which is suitable for all age groups. The area is open from 7pm to midnight and, being indoors, is comfortably air conditioned, saving frayed tempers with younger children.
Hollywood Keep travelling down Peace Road and just past Kiroseiz, on the left hand side, you can see a group of fiberglass dinosaurs. Hollywood is marked by an eponymous facsimile of the famous Hollywood hills sign. At the entrance to the attraction is a separate play area for children, with

Soho Square Continuing down Peace Road the turning for Savoy is clearly marked on the right before the airport, but by now I expect everyone knows their way here. During the evenings, the square is full (but not crowded) with families, and there are live stage shows and a small children’s fairground, suitable for the under 10’s.
a bouncy castle and various other attractions. There are the ever popular electric scooters for kids, costing 50 le for 20 minutes. Management recommend that parents accompany their children. The main area is something akin to Alf Leila Wa Leila, with a fountain show starting every hour, on the hour, from 7pm. This is followed by a dinosaur animation and then a live stage show. I went on Saturday night and there was some kind of sword/acrobatic demonstration (don’t try this at home kids), but I’m told they have a Kenyan, a Russian, a Brazilian and a belly dance show too. There’s a cover charge of 25 le for adults, which you can spend at the Dinosaur Bar, and kids get in for free. There were long queues at the gate, so this would seem to be a popular alternative.
During the day, there is an incredibly well organized summer school on offer with a diverse variety of activities. Kids can do organized sports, language classes, circus skills, bowling, dance classes… the list goes on. Considering that this runs from 9 to 5 from Sunday to Thursday, 400 le a week is very reasonable, especially as the fourth week is free if you book a whole month. Additionally, there’s a free bus pick up/drop off service. Soho provide a water dispenser to keep your little darlings hydrated through the day, plus a soft drink and a piece of fruit. Parents are expected to provide a packed lunch, or money to buy something from Café Chino, which is relatively inexpensive. ACTIVITIES La Strada Continuing down the road into Nabq itself, La Strada can be found near the end of the main drag, on the left hand side. There is a courtyard in the middle of the shopping area, to the left of an Indian restaurant called Virus. From 7 to 10 pm, there is an oriental band , a clown and a fire show to keep the kids amused. It costs 20 le to use the electric scooters for 15 minutes and 10le to use the climbing frame and recreations and on special holidays like Eid, there are additional activities, such as face painting. Behind the restaurant is an area called The Hang Out, where kids can play PS 4 or X-Box for 40 le per hour, plus one hour for free. A DVD player and a wide selection of DVD’s is also available for free. The area is supervised, so it’s safe to leave kids there on their own. Also, there is a 9D cinema/simulator located beside the restaurant, costing 50 le for locals or 100 le for tourists.

Sharm el Sheikh is blessed with a vast variety of restaurants offering us countless cuisines to choose from. In a relatively small resort , you can sample sushi, taste Thai, indulge in Indian and Italian, feast on fusion and even mangé Mongolian. With this array of eateries it is easy to forget about trying authentic Middle Eastern or Egyptian cuisine. As they say ‘When in Rome…..’ so we should definitely indulge our taste buds in the delights of the country’s cuisine. With this in mind we decided to try the Luxor restaurant in Soho Square. There are lots of small ‘local’ restaurants offering traditional food but sometimes especially when you are on holiday you want to have a more sophisticated dining experience – the Luxor fills this gap perfectly. The restaurant is located on the top floor, alongside the other Soho Square restaurants the Bombay and Mandarin. There is a shared Maitre’d area where we were greeted and escorted to our table by the large window, which gives panoramic views over the busy Soho street. As we walked into the restaurant we were immediately transported back to an era of bygone Egypt, the atmosphere was magically set by the young man playing the traditional Oud. This was a beautiful and just added the finishing touch to the authentic décor of mosaic terracotta floor tiles, a wall to wall mural depicting a classic scene of a lady collecting water and various ornamental pieces. Our waiter lit the arabesque lantern, poured us mineral water and presented us with the menus. He politely made some recommendations which all sounded delicious. For an appetizer you can choose from a selection of cold mezza (various dips), hot mezza and soups. We decided to have the cold mezza platter for two. The main menu offers authentic Egyptian dishes and has classics such as Lamb Fatta; a rich casserole of layered spiced lamb, flat bread and rice, Lamb and Orka, Prawn Tagine and MIX August 2014

from the Charcoal grill. We took our waiters recommendation and chose the half grilled organic chicken and the grilled lamb chops. The mixed mezza platter was served with warm flat bread and was an assortment of tahini, hummus, mixed salad, yogurt with cucumber, cold mashi (stuffed aubergine & tomato) and spiced pickles. It was the perfect start to our meal, although for someone with a heartier appetite it might seem a little small for two.

Our mains were served with rice and grilled vegetables. The lamb chops were cooked to my order; the perfect medium rare. They were lightly spiced, succulent and delicious. I found the portion size an appropriate serving for me; however for heartier appetites I would

recommend the half chicken as this was a larger portion. Each dish was nicely presented in a sophisticated way, a nice touch was the waiter left our mezza plate, suggesting that the tahini was a nice condiment for the grilled meat. Every Egyptian meal needs to be finished with something sweet. Although we were full our excellent waiter suggested we should share the ‘Om Ali’ a sweet milk pudding with nuts, raisins and small pieces of bread. It was delicious and complimented the meal. I would recommend the Luxor as a very pleasurable dining experience perfect for those who wish to sample traditional cuisine but in a more sophisticated atmosphere than a souk. The service was impeccable and the food delicious.

Ingredients: * 2 chicken breasts * 0.5 kg flour * 5 gm of chicken powder soup stock cube (Maggi or any other) * 1 egg * Half an apple * Lemon * Cooking oil * Small spoon of starch * Small spoon of barbecue sauce (or any other sauce you particularly like) * Half of small cup vinegar Preparation: Slice the chicken breasts into four long pieces, wash them with vinegar and lemon, and then leave them dipped in vinegar and lemon for one hour in the fridge.

Whisk the eggs with the starch, grate the apple into the mixture and mix it all together. Heat the oil to 180 degrees, then take the chicken out and dip it in the mixture two or three times, till it has all soaked in the mixture. Put the chicken pieces in the oil for 6 minutes, and then it’s all ready to serve, with rice and French fries as sides.
Chef Khalid was born in Syria, but has lived in Jordan and has taken Jordanian nationality. He trained and worked as a chef in Lebanon and Jordan, as well as working in the Emirates and Syria. He has worked in famous restaurants, like his family restaurant Megbel in Jordan and the famous Lebanese restaurant Manuela. He moved to Sharm this year to take over the management of Sports Café and will be opening the new restaurant, Chicken House,in 2 months time. Chef Khalid gives credit to his wife for all her support, saying “behind every successful man there is a great woman” . She also works as a chef and will be handling the new kitchen in Chicken House, with Syrian cold and hot appetizers and different kinds of oriental recipes, which will appeal to all cultures. He says “We always look to give our best for our customers, especially paying attention to high standards of hygiene, and hope to introduce them to a great and unique oriental taste”. MIX August 2014

Khaliji can best be described as tribal tunes originating from the Gulf area. The original music is similar to Bedouin music, which has strong roots in Sinai. It is a rich blend with base beats of tabl drum and highs of instrumental oud. This beautiful and often spiritual music has now been modernized for the club scene. The traditional music has been fused with the latest club beats, creating a truly erotic, arabesque and intoxicating dance rhythm. So to get with the latest club trend here is the lowdown on where to go. Pacha has launched its Khaliji night every Friday, where the whole club becomes a Khaliji kingdom. If you miss this chance then every other club night at Pacha there is a separate Khaliji room – so you can dance mainstream and then test out the alternative beats. Here’s our healthy guide on what to juice, how to juice and if you’re on holiday where to get the juice. The juicing hype hit Hollywood last season and has seen the likes of super skinny hotties like Miranda Kerr and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley singing the praises of just juicing. Many nutritionists hopped on the band-wagon which saw top department stores in the UK stocking their shelves with the latest and greatest machines as sales increased tenfold. Whilst the world watched as kg after kg dropped off the juice brigade, other diet experts hotly contested the idea and benefits. 40
