first City in Egypt to be entirely solar powered, which will once again give Sharm the boost it deserves and puts us back in the solar spotlight of going green. According to a statement by the Governor of South Sinai, Khaled Fouda, Sharm el-Sheikh hopes to be fully powered by solar energy within the next three months. As it stands Sharm is already powered by 70% of solar energy, and if they manage to accomplish this new goal, it will become the first

city in Egypt fully reliant on renewable energy. This follows the historic agreement signed at the first ever Egypt Economic Development conference held in Sharm between SkyPower Global and International Gulf Development with the Government of Egypt for the development of 3,000 megawatts of utility-scale solar photovoltaic projects to be built over the next four years. 9

Initially students can attend in comfortable loose fitting clothes but ultimately to be able to improve and compete a suit is a must. Suits can be purchased for as little as 350le and classes are 20le per session. Judo is just one discipline of martial arts – there are so many more methods and the ABD Academy is the authority on some of these original arts. Abd Rahman is the founder of the academy which teaches at the sports centre. It is the first academy in Sharm to teach boxing, kick boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, Kung Fu, Jiu Jitsu and MMA and also promotes international championships and events. Classes in all of the disciplines are run for children and also adults and there is no one more qualified than the man himself to teach you these beautiful yet powerful arts.

Talking about art forms; in another corner of the vast arena, petite girls are flexing their bodies in preparation of their rhythmic gymnastics class. These incredibly tiny tots easily glide into splits, box-splits, arch until their heads touch their toes, all with ankle weights on to help build muscles. This is total dedication from both the children and the parents as these soon to be champions train three hours for six days a week. It is a beautiful art incorporating classic dance with athletic ability using hula hoops, a ball, batons, ribbons and ropes. There are two classes available at the centre one taught in Italian the other Russian/Ukraine.

Last but by no means least is the basket ball league. Shooting hoops is the international past-time of all American – you can’t walk down a suburban street without passing by a basket – but here in Sharm? It is now becoming the Sharm kids favourite pass time and that is all thanks to Coach Daniel Tate from Cincinnati, Ohio. He started off teaching American Football at the German University in Cairo, but a short holiday trip to Sharm changed all of that and with an ideal opening at St. Joesph’s Abd Rahman is the three times champion of International school, Coach Tate found himself Egypt in Kung Fu sanda - sanshou sport. DINING

Mexican Munch-up By Moira Tune

As the soft sounds of the acoustic guitar gently serenaded us, whilst we chatted between dipping crisp corn chips into spicy salsa, my friend piped up and said ‘we could be sitting in a cantina in Mexico’ – such was the setting of the Mexican restaurant in Tropitel in Naama Bay. This delightful cantina style restaurant is the perfect place for a casual meal with friends and this is why myself and two girlfriends decided to ‘go to Mexico’ for an evening of catch-up. We decided to sit on one of the rustic style outside tables set spaciously on the cobbled pavement area. The décor is very rancho style with nice heavy wooden tables set with green gingham table mats and comfortable chairs with crossed stitched leather. Although the outside courtyard area is beside the road, this bit of Naama Bay is cut off from traffic so the only passing traffic was people 18

which just added to the ambiance. The backdrop is a beautiful waterfall feature which cascades down a rock face making the whole setting very chilled out and relaxing. There is also a large open kitchen with plate glass windows, so you can see the chefs in their bright whites busy prepping all the delicious food. The waiter came and asked us if we would like to have something to drink before the meal. They have a full cocktail list with a special ‘Mexican cocktail’ section. We were very tempted to have one of their famous Margaritas served in a salt rimmed glass or a Tequila Sunrise but in the end we chose a bottle of chilled white wine. We also selected corn chips served with salsa and buffalo chicken wings served with a blue cheese dip to share. Other appetizers included fried cheese sticks, nachos, some interesting soups and salads, which can be served as mains as well. MIX April 2015

Just as we were perusing the menu to choose our mains, the waiter swished by to the table next to us with sizzling delicious smelling fajitas, and that convinced all of us. I ordered the shrimp fajita and my friends ordered the chicken. You can also have beef or vegetable or a combo of chicken, beef and vegetables. The fajitas are served on a traditional iron skillet accompanied by soft tortillas, guacamole, lettuce, grated cheese, sour cream and tomato salsa salad. There was plenty to eat and it was delicious as we wrapped our fillings up and ate away. There are also a range of home-made burgers and sandwiches and also some pasta dishes. This is a nice touch especially if you have some members of your party who like the Mexican ambiance but can’t handle spice – at least you know the menu caters for every taste. The Monterey Chicken swamped in a delicious piquant sauce covered in cheese sounds lovely as did the two varieties of strip steak. One MIX April 2015

served with caramelized onions and cheese, the other salsa. Other Mexican mains included Enchiladas, Burritos and Tacos. The restaurant was busy with most of the outside tables occupied – this is always a good sign of quality. The guitarist moved around the tables, chatting nicely with the guests, even letting one play the strings, in tune with the background music. The whole staff from the smiling Chefs, to the excellent waiters and the guitarist made us feels very welcome. We agreed we would definitely visit Mexico again in Naama Bay to try out their other delicious dishes. Got the ‘munchies’ for Mexican? If our review has got you salivating for salsa or feeling hungry for Fajitas then we have got great news for you. Mix readers will get 25% discount during the month of April 2015. Just mention to the waiter you read the review in Mix and they will add the discount for your dinner. 19

MIX April 2015

Presented by Chef Ralph Stocker – Ralph’s German Bakery Ralph’s German Bakery is the cute little café situated next to Metro supermarket on Peace Road. This homely haven hails from Dahab, where it has been a firm establishment for almost over a decade. Luckily for Sharmers the founder of the bakery Ralph decided a couple of years ago to open up shop in Sharm. Inspired by his Grandmother’s delicious baking of cakes and pastries, Ralph decided he wanted to follow in her footsteps from an early age. After he finished high school he started a 3 year apprenticeship with a famous bakery in Munich from which he graduated as Chef Baker. He then worked in several bakeries around the world to gain experience before attending University in Munich where he graduated as a Master Baker. Ralph became a specialist in setting up bakeries aboard and that is how he arrived in Dahab, where he set up his own bakery ten years ago. The German bakery in Sharm sells a selection of traditional breads, salt doughy pretzels, sour doughs plus many more delicacies including delicious strudels and tortes. As the celebration of Easter is traditional in Germany we decided to feature on of Ralph’s Bakery recipes for Easter Doughnuts.

Ingredients - 1/2 cup Milk - 1 Package dry yeast - 3/4 cup Sugar - 4 cups All-Purpose Flour - Pinch of Salt 1 stick of Unsalted Butter, room- temperature - 1 Egg Yolk - Oil for frying - Jam, lemon curd or marmalade - Raisins or Nuts, Powdered Sugar (for decorating)

MIX April 2015

PREPARATION Heat milk to luke warm. In a small bowl, add the milk, yeast, 1/2 teaspoon of the sugar, and 2 tablespoons of the flour. Combine and cover with plastic wrap. Allow yeast to become active. It should begin to bubble after 20 minutes. In a large mixing bowl, add remaining ingredients. Add yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms. Cover dough and allow to rise in a warm location until double in size. Remove dough from bowl onto a floured work surface. Knead the dough for a few minutes to remove some of the air bubbles that have formed. Divide the dough into small pieces and roll into a doughnut shape. Lay the shaped doughnuts on some parchment paper and allow to rest again and to rise again for about 10-15 mins. Heat the oil, and test a small piece of the dough to see if it sizzles. When the oil is not enough, drop the doughnuts into the oil until they are golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and put on kitchen towel paper to absorb the extra oil. When cool – decorate with icing . 21

NIGHT LIFE

Zaki

!

I went along to see him and ask him what he has been up to since the halcyon days at Ghazala and have an overdue catch-up with one of my favourite performers. So Zaki where have you been since leaving Ghazala? You’ve been missed at the Beach Bar… I’ve been working at various hotels – sometimes it is time to move on and with the economic climate a few years ago it was a little tough. Now I do 2 nights at the Hyatt, 2 nights at the Iberotel Palace and of course Fridays here. That still leaves 28

we formed our first band and started to play all the music we recorded from the radio. I’ve only ever seen you perform solo - did you enjoy being in a band?

I loved being in a band and working with other musicians but when I first came here I had to work with backing tracks. Now I’m used to being alone and having the freedom to perform songs I choose. is Back The first time I saw Zaki perform was way back in 1999 when he was the resident singer at the Ghazala Beach bar. Over the following years I spent many a happy evening listening to him perform, having a bit of a boogie and chatting during his breaks about living in Sharm. A few years ago he moved on from there to perform in some of Sharm’s classiest hotels and in doing so denied us poor locals access to his talents. Fortunately thanks to the owners of El Panorama knowing a good thing when they see it, residents and visitors can enjoy his dulcet tones every Friday night from 9pm.

Going back to the music for a moment, I’ve always enjoyed listening to you because you seem to have the same taste in music as I do and that lovely deep voice that can carry it off! Yes I’ve always loved songs that have emotion and tell a story – artists like Chris Rea, Barry White, Bob Seger, Joe Cocker – all the old rockers and anything that moves me. So do you ever get time to yourself? You mentioned taking your wife out to dinner, but I get the impression you are a busy man with little time to relax. Between the singing, the studio, my work as entertainment manager at Hollywood and my laundry at Sunny Lakes (a laundry too?!?!) no you are right there isn’t much down time. I will confess to enjoying playing football on the Playstation though – it is less effort that actually running around a pitch and helps clear my mind when I want to relax. Zaki and I carried on chatting for a while longer about the old days, our favourite songs and TV talent shows; he feels he is now too old for these and I assured him he was way better than most young singers on television. I also found out that his daughter is carrying on the family tradition by singing in her school choir and taking part in competitions at the highest level – talent obviously runs in the family. Perhaps one day she will perform here with her father, now that is something to look forward to. MIX April 2015

Break out the Easter Eggs

By Abby Rhodes

T

all manner of treats made from chocolate or candy. The mounds of chocolate eggs, bunnies and chicks in the supermarkets signal that Easter is on the way.

This time of year the shops in the UK are full to bursting with

Easter is usually seen as a Christian festival marking the Resurrection of Christ, but Egyptians celebrate Sham elNasseem , the first Monday

he warmth at night is a sure indication that Spring is coming and Summer won’t be far behind. The vernal Equinox is celebrated in many ways in different cultures but one common theme seems to be the humble egg.

MIX April 2015

after Coptic Easter, which is traditionally a day for taking in the spring breeze (nasseem) and picnicing by the Nile. The Egyptians have been central to deciding when Easter occurs as their celebrations were based on the movement of the sun, which they passed on through Roman and then Christian cultures to become the modern standard.

39

LIVING In Ancient Egypt, eggs for the Pharoahs were dyed and hung in temples as emblems of regenerative life. They not only symbolized new life, but they served as small art works to enjoy at the picnics. Dyed eggs from Pharaonic times are thought to be a direct predecessor of our Easter eggs today, but there are many other cultures which also hold the Egg as a symbol of fertility and life.

The Norse Goddess of Spring “Ostara” or “Eostre” is responsible for giving us the Easter Bunny as it is one of her symbols of fertility (rabbits and fertility? – I’m sure you can make the connection). She also gives us eggs and the 8th Century historian ‘The Venerable Bede’ attributes the name ‘Easter’ as coming from this Pagan Goddess. But enough of strangely named historians and back to eggs….

Eggs have become a major part of the Easter Tradition, representing new life and the resurrection. The tradition of painting eggs goes way back before Christianity; the ancient Persians painted eggs for Nowrooz, their New Year celebration, which falls on the Spring equinox. This tradition has continued every year on Nowrooz since ancient times. At

40

the Passover Seder, a hard-boiled egg dipped in salt water symbolizes both new life and the Passover sacrifice offered at the Temple in Jerusalem. Another Orthodox Christian tradition is the presenting of red colored eggs to friends while giving Easter greetings.

Easter eggs are a popular symbol of new life in Ukraine and other Slavic countries’ folk traditions. A batiklike decorating process known as pysanka produces intricate, brilliantly-colored eggs. The celebrated Fabergé workshops created exquisite jewelled Easter eggs for the Russian Imperial Court – not the sort of thing you’d want if you are off to roll Easter Eggs down hills which is a tradition in many parts of the UK – nor would you want to be hiding Fabergé eggs for an Egg Hunt (although I wouldn’t mind finding one!)

So whether you are celebrating the Vernal Equinox, Passover, the Resurrection or the Nasseem break out the Eggs – dyed, painted, chocolate or salted; and although we’re a long way from the Nile, the thought of a picnic on the beach to celebrate the coming of Spring sounds perfect … anyone got a spare Crème Egg
