“May the odds be forever in your favour” By Moira Tune Do you hunger for a fit toned body or maybe some inner mental strength or perhaps a healthy happy combination of mind & body strength? Well if the answer is yes, then ‘District 16’ could well be the place to feed your hunger. The name is no co-incidence; District 16 was created from inspiration from the Hunger Games Trilogy; the character of Katniss Everdeen; her core inner strength of never giving up and an example of how physical and mental strength can prevail even at the toughest times. It all sounds a bit intriguing, but District 16 is no magical potion for fitness and health – it’s basically boot camp; an easy equation of working hard to achieve mind and body strength, to learn to draw from resources you didn’t know you had, to tap into that inner strength and equally importantly to learn team work. It is the brainchild of Captain Nabil el Nagdy the former Chief Trainer of the Egyptian 8
National Kung Fu team and Hala el Henaway a local Sharm resident responsible for all District 16’s Sharm activities. Hala grew up in the UK; when lots of people were leaving Egypt after the revolution, Hala decided to return and moved back to Cairo in 2013. She was always a track and field sports person, but when a group of Cairo friends from various fitness and survival trained backgrounds dared her to try cross-fit, she took up the challenge as she knew it was different. Initially it was tough and some of the challenges she thought were insurmountable but with dedication from herself and encouragement from her cross-fit colleagues she found she had a new mental and physical strength. She is now a strength and conditioning fitness coach, nutritionist, trained leader of boot camps, certified Kung Fu coach for kids and about to partake in the USA ‘Sealfit’ challenge which has a 45 minute plank – OMG. District 16 is located in the Nabq protectorate at Sharkey‘s Ecological Camp; this amazing desert and coastal area is perfect for the ethos of her boot and survival camps. It’s all about training as a team in natural surroundings; in clean fresh air, using what nature has given us (you won’t find any dumb-bells here; just logs to lift and sand to run in). There are various training programs to suit all levels of ability from beginners to experienced boot campers, designed for adult and children. If you are a resident you can sign up for two hours of training for a minimum period of two weeks, five days per week. For full results these programs require 100% commitment. It may seem a lot but the results are clearly seen in the faces of the first District 16 group – it is not only physical fitness, these District Sixteeners have vitality, self esteem, confidence and that ‘gun-ho’ attitude that the is no such word as can’t and everything is possible. The camp based in the protectorate has a training
arena, obstacle course, archery and a horse riding academy. In mid March they will also have hut a c c o m m o d a ti o n for intensive week training, where candidates will live on site and train with a controlled diet every day using physical and mental problem solving tasks. A typical day would begin with a 3km run to warm up in the desert, followed by core strength training, stretching and finally group challenge tasks to achieve team building
skills. Archery, Martial Art training and horse riding will also be incorporated. So at the end of a week or course you will be an all singing, all dancing K a t n i s s Everdeen or her equivalent. Children from 7-14 can also sign up for holiday camps. Hala is a mother and believes that children

are far more comfortable in natural surroundings rather than in a closed gym environment. Children can benefit from this playful discipline, learning how to problem solve with their team and also how to not give up. These skills are very important life skills and will be used time and time again when life throws its little challenges at us in adult life. District 16 is a revolution in fitness training – it will continue to evolve and aims to provide the toughest survival training for those who have completed the first boot camp level. The trainers work with local Bedouins to teach desert survival, where to camp, how to live in nature, herbs to use and how to survive in this tough terrain. Hala is indeed Sharm’s very own Katniss – she is not giving up and she is going that extra mile to put Sharm on the map as the best destination both spiritually and physically for cross-fit, boot camp training. School is cool at Soho Studio

Nearly every kid looks forward to weekends and school holidays; it’s a welcome break from lessons and homework. As a parent who used to have to work weekends and had little vacation time, school holidays were an endless round of trying to find sitters or activities to keep the little ones occupied while I earned a living. Even if I could get time off, the inevitable whine of “I’m bored Mummy” normally came into play after just a few school-free days. Thanks to Soho Square’s Winter School the parents of Sharm no longer have to worry about these things and I doubt any child will utter the word “bored”. The Winter School is managed by the lovely Naomi who noticed a gaping hole in 12
Sharm’s childcare. For babies and toddlers there are ample provisions all year round, but by age 5 these nurseries and day-care centres do not really cater for the child’s growing mind. The facilities at Soho allow for all ages to find something to stretch their minds and bodies! “We mix revision lessons with activities” says Naomi, “to keep the children on track with their school work as well as having fun.” Naomi went on to explain how the day is structured so the children get the most from what is on offer at Soho and ensure they ‘study’ while their minds are fresh. “The day starts with some stretching exercises to get the
kids going and then we do some maths or spellings to compliment the things they learn at school. After they’ve had lunch we get into the really fun stuff.” As I listened to Naomi listing all the activities available I started to wish I was 10 years old again; tennis, ballet, karate, ice-skating, bowling, facepainting, art, singing, drama, juggling – the list seemed endless. The supervisors are all qualified in childcare or teaching and have a range of talents which they put to excellent use encouraging the kids in all areas of art, drama and sport. While I was thinking this was an impressive selection that would keep any child happy for life, I realised Naomi was not finished yet. MIX February 2015
“Our chefs here at Soho have been a great help giving the kids cooking lessons too. We’ve made pizzas and onion bhajis amongst other things” she said, “it is great when a kid gets to try a bhaji for the first time and they’ve made it themselves.” Naomi is so enthusiastic about the Winter School it is totally infectious. She explained that they encourage healthy eating so snacktimes are juices and fruit rather than crisps or sweets. She joked that sometimes the children are unhappy about an apple instead of chips but soon love the healthy option as it gives them more energy to play.
as the scheme seems way too good to shelve until the summer holidays. She told me about plans to expand the scheme to weekends and evenings so the children could continue to mix with their Winter School friends. The plan is to supervise homework and offer activities such as tennis, gymnastics etc. “We are in a position here where a brother and sister can be dong their favourite hobbies at the same time instead of one getting bored watching the other. One can be doing ballet while the other has a karate lesson for example.”
There is never a dull moment and Naomi is always looking to bring in performers or teachers to give the kids a special treat. Jugglers, magicians, singers, trips to the famous Ice-bar and 9D cinema are all included in the price. “One of the great things about having the Winter School at Soho is all the facilities are right here, the only problem was the location.
People think it is a long way even though we are central between Nabq and Hadaba - that’s why we have our own bus service.” Using dedicated drivers and the school’s staff, the buses make pickups from Nabq and Hadaba and all sensible points in-between. The children are allowed to use the bus time to chat with friends or play or their latest electronic gismos. During the day the gismos need to go away as socialising, studying, exercising and playing fill every minute. Definitely no time for Candy Crush while they are at Soho!
From a parents perspective the idea of not having to rush from one end of town to the other to drop various children at their chosen activities seemed wonderful, especially as Naomi went on to say they would continue with the free bus. She is hoping that they can partner with the local schools to bring the children straight to the after-school club and would welcome any input or feedback from teachers and parents that might be interested in the scheme. M
any moons ago (well maybe ten years ago) if you had that special occasion and you wanted a fine dining treat there was only really one place to go and that was the Rangoli at the then Sofitel. Sharm back then was still relatively undeveloped and there was not a lot of fine dining choices – fast forward ten years and now Sharm has many options covering all types of cuisines but still the Rangoli at the now Movenpick resort is in the top ten places to treat yourself. That is quite a reputation, as many restaurants have come and gone in this time – to remain at the top just highlights the dedication of the team from Chef to waiter to providing consistently good quality service and inspirational Indian food. It was a very pleasant trip down memory lane as we arrived at the Movenpick resort and wandered through the arabesque architecture 18
to the entrance of the Rangoli – perched up high on one of the top level terraces overlooking the entire Naama Bay. The restaurant is renowned for its position and breath-taking panoramic views, so the only place to sit to gain the full Indian ambiance is on the terrace. Rangoli is a small restaurant which exudes a cozy intimate atmosphere. There is soft Sitra music and warm lighting which matches the amber and maroon décor, with tables well placed and spaced overlooking the resort and bay. On arrival we were greeted by the Maitre’d and escorted to our terrace table. After we were seated our waiter served us hot towels to refresh ourselves and gave us the menu, wine list and complimentary selection of Indian pickles. Indian food is always good to share which adds to the intimacy of a romantic meal. With this in mind we chose the home-made vegetable samosas and pappdums to sample the pickles with. The pastry of the samosas was light and delicate which made them perfect to pair with the mint raita. The pappdums had the expected crunch factor and complimented the fiery lime pickle and sweet juicy mango chutney. For our main dishes we ordered Tandoori lamb chops, Butter chicken, Peshawani Naan and plain rice. The lamb chops were the best I have ever tried – they were perfectly cooked, juicy and delicious with just enough punch in the traditional Tandoori marinade. We were served all the dishes with great style and care – the service was exemplary and indeed fit for a Maharaja. The Butter chicken was rich and velvety with tender pieces of Tandoori chicken enveloped in a silken spiced buttery sauce – which was simply mouth-watering.

His chatty disposition gave us an interesting insight to the cuisine, how and where he sources spices from, how he keeps the food authentic and some personal memories of Mumbai. He described the Kulfi sellers with such detail we felt we were there and of course on his recommendation ordered the Kulfi with pistachio, rose and coconut for desert. Rangoli once again was the rose of Indian cuisine in Sharm. If you are looking for topnotch service with a smile, traditional delicious Indian food and a view of a thousand twinkling lights this is the place to go. It’s deliciously delightful and remains one of the top spots for a fine dining treat.

Presented by Chef Marwa Alaa – ‘Opick’ Café at La Strada Chef Marwa hasn’t traditionally come from a Chef background in fact she graduated from the faculty of political science from 6th of October University in Cairo in 2002. Although she chose to study a political career she had a passion for cooking from an early age and discovered that she not only enjoyed creating sweet treats and oriental dishes but she had a talent for it, and most importantly it made her feel good. During her college days she shared her creations with her husband but it was not until she graduated that they thought about turning her skills into a private catering business. Initially they worked as a team, with her husband making the deliveries to her friends whilst Marwa cooked. When word got around about Marwa’s delicious oriental food their orders became more. Marwa’s husband worked in a bank and many colleagues started ordering her home cooked style of favorite oriental dishes. They made the move to a professional level when they opened Miro in 2005, however consequences of marriage and children made it too difficult to continue. Now they are back with a new cozy café offering delicious sweets and birthday cakes. The café is called ‘Opick’ and is at La Strada – this is her recipe for Cheese cake.
PREPARATION
Ingredients - 1 1/2 cups of digestive biscuits - 5 tsb Butter (in home temp.) - 3 eggs - 1/4 tsb salt - Lemon Zest - 3/4 cups of sugar - 600 gm Kirri cheese

- 250 gm cream cheese - Whipping cream - 1 large tsb of corn flour - I cup Yogurt
Combine biscuits with butter and mix well. Press the mixture into the pan. Then place into the oven on temperature 180c for 10 mins. Mix all the other ingredients together well and pour it into the pan and place back into the oven for 45mins. Allow it to cool down and then leave it in the fridge to be ready for next day.

When romance is in the air there is nothing quite like a slow dance with your loved one to a classic ballad or your own special song. If you pop in to The Lounge in Naama Bay the resident singer Mark can be found most nights performing everything from rock ‘n’ roll to reggae via Robbie (Williams that is). He is probably the closest thing Sharm has to a human jukebox with over 200 different songs he performs regularly and the crazy ability to sing practically any song requested of him. I went to see him perform and managed to grab him during a short break. I was feeling naughty so my first question was perhaps a little harsh. Mark is it true you can sing anything? What if I wanted something by Maroon 5 or James Blunt? I couldn’t do those without very tight trousers on! (laughs) I could play you the track but my vocal range doesn’t quite stretch that high. Your repertoire seems huge and covers a variety of styles, what do you like performing best? Anything by Elvis and things that get the audience going; I like to interact with the crowd and really enjoy it when they are having a good time. Would it be true to say Presley is your hero? I know some people have referred to you as “Sharm Elvis” Yes, blame my Dad for that one. He was a huge influence on me musically and I grew up listening to Elvis Presley, Billy Fury – basically all the heroes of the ‘50’s and 60’s.

NIGHT LIFE (Feeling naughty again) So would you consider going the whole way to become an impersonator – sparkly jumpsuit, wig, glasses etc.? (Expletives deleted) – roughly translated to “Not a chance” Have you always been musical? Did you have a career in music before coming to Sharm? Yes I have always been musical. When I was younger I played piano, cornet, guitar and the stylophone. Stylophone? You mean one of those toy organ things? You try playing one, they aren’t easy – (more laughing) – but no I wasn’t able to work as a musician before I came to live here. Has it been easy making a career here? No. It has taken me 2 years to build up a following and find my place in the music scene here. It has been hard work and I’ve performed in many venues before The Lounge. I must be the only singer to have gigged at every British Bar in Sharm as well as a fair few hotels and of course in the shower! When I first came to Sharm I had been offered work in one of the big hotels but that unfortunately fell through because it was around 2011 and things here were in a state of flux shall we say. So what prompted the job offer? I was a guest at the hotel and did a couple of songs with the two lovely ladies singing there. That was the first time I met Joleene and Janey. The General Manager Mr. Ali thought I was good enough to invite back as their resident singer. That was quite an achievement for someone who really hadn’t done any professional singing before and made me feel a little nervous to say the least.

Did you find the musicians here in Sharm helpful to the ‘new kid’? Yes, I got a lot of support from Joleene, Janey and also Essam – who is a fabulous guitarist. They all encouraged me and helped me fine tune my voice and setlist. Janey is in the UK now but it is always great to get together with Essam and Joleene to jam – when we get a chance – everyone is always so busy. Perhaps that is why it tends to be at 4am!! Where do you see you music taking you? Do you have plans for the future? I’ve been offered work in both the UK and Denmark but I don’t want to leave Sharm right now. I enjoy my life here too much and I like to take each day as it comes. You never know what is round the corner, although here it is likely to be a bloomin’ camel. I understand you have quite a following among the older residents of Sharm, do you think that is because of the type of songs you sing or do you sing those songs because they like them? Both. It is a kind of chicken and egg situation. They like me because of the songs I sing and I like to sing things they enjoy. I really appreciate their support and they are all lovely people – a bit old for groupies but definitely friends now. It is always surprising how many people love the old songs, particularly Elvis, just the other day a young Russian guy was sharing my gig on Skype to his cousin in Moscow! World fame at last – (more laughing). Mark’s break was over so he went back to singing and I sipped a cool beer and tried to make sense of my scribbled notes. The one thing that I’d certainly found out was that he has a sense of humour as well as a great voice.
