Sharm El Sheikh Marriott Red Resort celebrates the first guest arrival using our newly Mobile Check-In application. With a brand for every personality & destination for every desire, travel is easy with the free Marriott App. With the Marriott Mobile App, check-in experience became simpler. Marriott

Rewards members, who have downloaded the app, can check-in through a smartphone as early as 4 pm the day before arrival, receiving an automatic notification when the room is ready. Our guests are more mobile and global than ever before and technology is increasingly important to them, which is why we will add check-out next year. ANEX CHARITY

Anex tour is celebrating their Anniversary of 11th year of successful operations in Egypt with a beautiful initiative: a day out for the kids from the Orphan Children’s School in El-Tor City. Anex tour (and their partner, Brightsky) has invited the children for a special day to spend in Sharm el Sheikh and organized a wonderful program to entertain them. They started by visiting the underwater world at the Royal Submarine Seascope, then had lunch by the Sunrise Diamond Hotel. After lunch, the children went to watch the Dolphin Show at Dolphina Nabq, where they even had a photo session with the dolphins. The afternoon they had all the fun by playing at the Kids Area of Hollywood Sharm and then watched the amazing Fountain Show in the evening. For dinner the children were invited to the Royal Grand Sharm Hotel, where the children also were surprised by plenty of lovely gifts from Anextour and their partners, Danyel Leather, Baraka Oil, Plantoil, Pink House, the Key of Life and Shea Egypt. “All of us, who is living and working in Sharm MIX July 2014

el Sheikh, have social responsibilities. We were glad to see the children smile and to make them feel happy, it was an unbelievable experience for them and also for us. As we know charity is very important all over the world and while the Anex tour company is already organizing such charity actions already in Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, now we’ll try to make it popular also in Egypt with all our power. Our main goal is to introduce these events of charity with regularity and create a tradition and an example for everyone in Egypt.” – said Cagil Remzi Beylan, Area Manager of Anex tour. 7

SCUBA School is cool by Moira Tune

MIX July 2014

Diving, Sub-Aqua and SCUBA for non divers can often appear to be quite a serious sport. We’ve seen the air tanks at the jetty, the piles of weights and the stacked up boxes of kit; when all we have is a rolled up towel and our swimwear. We’ve seen divers wobbling down the beach to wade into the shallows looking like beasts of burden, with cumbersome kit, sweating in restrictive neoprene; when all we have is a pair of

‘flippers’ tucked under our arm and mask propped on our forehead.

light weight regulators, and children sized BDC’s, wetsuits, masks and fins.

Some of us have been in ear shot of intense briefings from those multi-tank tech divers and many a time we’ve been party to a post dive chat in the local watering hole. As a non diver it seems a lot to co-ordinate, to get right and manage, so it is understandable that it would be the last thing to consider enrolling a kid in a course to learn SCUBA.

Remember also that children have than uncanny ‘no fear’ attitude which as we age sadly diminishes. Once your child has taken their first breaths underwater, there will be no stopping them, they will be swimming with the fish and eagerly wanting to learn more. I remember clearly, sitting in a well known dive centers courtyard, waiting for the return of the divers when a little girl walked in beaming with a grin ear to ear. She was so excited about her first underwater experience; she had difficulty getting the words out which mainly consisted of “ I saw a pufferfish, a blue spotted ray, a gold fish, an angel fish, a butterfly fish, a ………..fish” which was peppered with gasps of air. She had clearly been won over by the whole experience.

Well stop and think again. Diving doesn’t have to be all serious, in fact diving is fun and children just love it. Most diving centers in Sharm are associated with international diver training agencies such as PADI or SSI. These agencies have excellent programs designed specifically for children with an emphasis on fun. There is also a whole heap of child friendly kit; mini tanks (8lt & 10lt),

ACTIVITIES The proof is in that ‘new breed’ the Sharmer Kid. Parents who work in diving and live in Sharm know the benefits of children learning to dive. With not much more than desert and sea available for entertainment and long long summer school holidays it is the perfect solution. Once they have achieved their PADI Junior Open Water certificate they can dive with an adult up to a maximum of 12 meters. This summer I have dived a lot with a gaggle of qualified Junior PADI Open Water SCUBA divers: Yousef, Younes (AKA Jonas), Amir & Ahmed. It is amazing how their confidence has increased; they learn responsibility for each other without even realizing it, by learning the fun buddy system. One Junior PADI Advanced Open Water diver (aged 13) told me the other day, albeit a bit seriously that “diving is my life, I would do anything to dive everyday – I just love it so much” and that was just after he had spotted his first Hammerhead Shark. Children can have their first SCUBA experience at 8 years old. PADI have a special program called the ‘Bubblemaker’

which is done in a maximum of two meters of water in ‘confined water’. ‘Confined water’ basically means in swimming pool like conditions. Naama Bay with its sheltered, shallow waters is an ideal location and your child gets to see fish as well. Children 10 years old and older can sign up for a PADI Discover SCUBA program. This is a one day activity which is also available for adults. A few fun skills are practiced and then it’s off diving to a depth of six meters with an Instructor. This program does not give a certification. Most children love the idea of collecting certifications; it gives them a sense of achievement and definitely a story to tell when they go back to school. The first certification in the PADI system is the Junior SCUBA diver and/or the Junior Open Water diver. The idea is that the courses are in modules so there is no pressure put on the child to finish. The can start with the 2-3 day SCUBA course and if they love it, can easily continue to the Open Water certification. This will keep them occupied for five days and at the end they will be able to dive with an adult to a maximum of 12 meters. The beauty of the SCUBA educational system is that each year when they have summer holidays they can continue to learn; improving their skills and confidence whilst having fun. There are so many speciality courses to do from underwater naturalist to treasure hunting search and recovery. The Advanced Open Water course can be started at 12 years, and for mature children the Rescue course can also be taught, although many Instructors would recommend the child being a little older as it is quite strenuous and potentially a serious subject. Learning to dive as a child is a fantastic and fun experience. Forget about it being a serious sport for adults only. Underneath the surface there is a colourful, educational playground, just waiting to be discovered by young eyes. Just catching the smiles on their faces after they have dived, says it all.

Eat like an Egyptian By Moira Tune

I

f you are looking to try some authentic Egyptian cuisine whilst you are on holiday then look no further than El Masrien. This institution of Egyptian cooking, has long been the staple venue for many Egyptian and non-Egyptian residents, however it was always a closely kept secret, as it was tucked away in Sharm’s Old Market area. Well the secret is out and El Masrien has expanded with not only a branch in Nabq, but now the latest offering of a branch in Naama Bay. This welcome addition makes eating at El Masrien an easy choice for many tourists visiting the main hub of the resort. The restaurant is situated on the main drag – the pedestrianized street, linking the main road where the taxi rank is to the down-town Naama area. The seating area is only on the large outdoor terrace, which has electric fans. Eating Egyptian style is very much a communal experience, so the dark wicker tables and chairs are large enough to seat up to eight people and are set in organised rows. Don’t be surprised if you have other people sitting at your table – it creates part of the ambiance. The ambiance is always friendly, if not a little loud – but that just creates the authentic feel of the place. We dined when the Holland V Chile World Cup match was on, so we expected to have some vibrant soccer sounds around us, especially as the restaurant has at least four large flat screen T.Vs.

MIX July 2014

Our waiter greeted us and swiftly manoeuvred us to our table. Within seconds mineral water appeared with two glasses and the waiter whittled off his recommendations. Don’t be afraid to ask for the menu, which is in English and Arabic, as sometimes the waiters can appear to be a little over keen to push their recommendations. We had a look at the extensive menu and decided to order what our waiter offered. The menu has a range of traditional soups like lentil and even pigeon for the more adventurous. There is a section for ‘Mashi’ which are various vegetables (zucchini and eggplant) stuffed with deliciously spiced rice. There are also salads and mixed mezza, which are ideal for a shared starter. By ordering a selection and sharing the plates with friends, you get to sample more of the Egyptian flavours. The main dishes can for Foreign eyes be a little over-whelming, also the English spelling needs some deciphering. Don’t be alarmed about the ‘Beef Flea’ it is ‘Beef Fillet’ – but these little idiosyncrasies just add

MIX July 2014

to the ‘sharm’ J. There are some quite funky dishes if you dare, for example testicles and heart are on the menu. For a milder palate there are plenty of items to choose from. There are pasta dishes, although I am not sure what ‘Spaghetti Blondz’ is or if you need to have a particular hair colour to order it. There is also duck on the menu which is definitely a treat for some. The proof is actually all around you, as the restaurant is packed with many Middle Eastern guests and resident Egyptians – so you know it is good. We ordered mixed salads and mezza to start with, and then the recommended whole rotisserie chicken, stuffed with spiced rice with nuts and dried fruit, and the beef flake with potatoes. We definitely over ordered as the portions are huge and such value for money is it unbelievable. You can have a feast enough for four people for under 5 euro each. The beef flake was incredibly tender pieces of beef cooked with thinly sliced potatoes in the oven. It was melt in the mouth and very tasty. The chicken with the rice was

also very juicy and cooked to perfection. When you have food like this, copy the locals and eat with pieces of flat bread and your fingers. If it is possible it tastes even better. El Masrien gives you an authentic Egyptian dining experience and it is incredible value for money. Don’t expect a high level of service or a refined dining ambiance. This is a fast and fun service. The food is delivered to your table, hot and within a flash. The waiters enjoy a little banter and ask the normal friendly questions of where you are from etc. If you dine at El Masrien you will eat like an Egyptian and walk away full and content. During the Holy month of Ramadan the restaurant will serve Iftar (the breakfast taken after sunset). El Masrien also has a delivery service and also (of course) offers Shishas for that after dinner digestive. Alcohol is not served.

G r o o v e s The Cocco Beach Club and The Sky Lounge Bar

by Hedvig Jeney Once upon a time, a long time ago in Sharm’s history, a man, a diver was wandering on the shores and fell in love with a particular part of the landscape and the reefs. That day, in 1984, a dream was born, and soon the place became a popular spot for all of us to visit and enjoy, today we call it El Fanar Beach and Restaurant. Ever since, Mr. Ayman Taher, the man with the dream, has owned and managed that corner of Hadaba. At the beginning it worked as a diving center, but since 1999, when people started using this beautiful cliff for beach parties and picnics, a small bar and restaurant was opened. Many times it has been rebuilt, enlarged, embellished, a disco added, another indoor restaurant with a curious cave-like look has been opened - it was always a place of constant renewal, changing into something more. Today we have the chance to witness another great change in this area, the ultramodern outdoor beach club called Cocco Beach Club and - for those who like to chill – the Sky Lounge has opened their gates for the guests in June. 26

There is something very typical about Sharm el Sheikh’s nightlife scenario. The clubs and bars tend to gather in certain areas, creating centers of entertainment, like Naama Bay, Soho Square or Nabq, but in Hadaba, one of the most populated areas of the city, we had only a few and very much cherished restaurants and bars. This was the case until now. Cocco and Sky Lounge what it takes to become one of the highlights of Sharm with large parking space, outdoor entertainment right by the sea. With a view of Tiran Island and Ras Mohamed, they both have a gorgeous scenery, which makes them all the more pleasant. cocco beach club You might be familiar with the location of the Cocco Club, since 2006 there was a disco existing there, but for many MIX July 2014

you can dance to. But there is more to this club than the others. They include into the grooves live musicians playing saxophone, violin, tribal drums and guitars. Every evening is unique by the sound. At the center of the dance floor, there When you enter the Club, the is a huge stage - standing immediate impression is that with its back to the sea, we have entered into a magical creating a spectacular natural world. NIGHT LIFE I have met with Mr. Emad Nowara, the Managing Director of the club right down by the sea in the Sky Lounge to ask him about the new ventures for our readers. He told me about the idea of the club, their teamwork and their future plans. A very professional and creative team supporting him to run and build further the two establishments. The name of the club was born as simple, as for a reminder of the coconuts, which somehow symbolize for everyone the sea, the beaches and the tropical beach clubs. They have a signature cocktail up to the name with vodka, fresh juice mix and – of course – coconut milk. The variety of the drinks on the menu is surprisingly large and if you are hungry, the sandwich corner offers a big variety of food. As for the

club itself, their creative team is constantly working on ideas, so the clubbers can expect every time something new. Tap into the primal pleasures of nightlife and release that built up tension by moving your body to the rhythm. Every Tuesday from 11:00 pm till 4:00 am you can dance into the small hours under the stars in this jewel box, this brand new hot spot of Sharm’s night life.

SKY LOUNGE Sky Lounge Bar is a hidden jewel of Sharm, located at the shores of Hadaba by El Fanar, with amid swaying palms trees and the warm breezes of the night. It is a trendy new hotspot of the city. It is comprised of an seafront complex featuring an open air

lounge and bar. You can enjoy your drinks in the lounge beds, sofas and tables right at the sea. If you are feeling hungry you can dine on the freshest selections of the menu of the Italian restaurant of El Fanar and of course they have a great wine, beer and cocktail selection. While those who would like to enjoy soft drinks, they have something curious. Sky Lounge prides itself of preparing all their fruit juices fresh, also for their alcoholic or non alcoholic cocktails, which are prepared and served by the internationally trained bartenders. You’ll find the virgin version of every alcoholic cocktail they serve. The bar was born as an after hour lounging bar, where one can even watch the sunrise in a very relaxed way after a long and exciting night out.

MIX July 2014

When you enter the first impression of the Sky Lounge is privacy. It is built in a way on decks above the sea, that it seems like a maze of comfortable chill out corners. The sea is illuminated by bright blue light, invisible to us, but creating an eerie beautiful night sea ambience under the stars. The music is deep trance and chill out house most of the week days, but they organize special events, too, like every Thursday in July the Sharm Touring

MIX July 2014

Musicians are jamming there for everybody’s delight. They plan to keep up with live music, so it will always be a special place for those, who doesn’t want the loud sounds of the clubs. The Lounge these days is open from 4 pm till 4 am, but soon anyone, who wants to see the sunrise, can have a direct view on it, just the same as for the sunset. Sky Lounge is situated in a way, that both can be enjoyed equally well. Cocco Beach Club and Sky Lounge Bar can organize for you any private special event, either in the fun packed club or in the chilling ambience of the lounge bar. For both places one needs to make a reservation on any events or weekdays on the number of: 01111196000 and you can check out their website and Facebook page for all their latest news.

LIVING

Ramadan the month of fasting by Abby Rhodes

D

uring July, visitors to Sharm El Sheikh will find the hotels decked with lanterns and dressed ready for a celebration. They may also notice that while things are a little quieter during the day, at night the cafes and small restaurants are alive with locals until the early hours before dawn. The Old Market and Naama Bay are always bustling after dark, but during July this year the whole city will seem nocturnal. The reason is the month of Ramadan; the ninth month

40

in the Islamic calendar during which the Quran was revealed. It is the holiest month of the year and the fast or Sawm which is observed is one of the five pillars of Islam. Each year during Ramadan, Muslims all over the world refrain from eating, drinking and smoking from dawn to dusk. Sawm also calls for the devout to refrain from cursing and thinking evil or sexual thoughts. This last one must be difficult for the hotel workers surrounded by bikini clad beauties!

It may seem strange to stop drinking water during one of the hottest months with the longest days, but the Islamic calendar is based on lunar months of 29 or 30 days and has been in existence since 622AD. This was the year when The Prophet Muhamed travelled from Mecca to Medina spreading the word of Allah. Each year has only 354 or 355 days and so this year is 1435 – 579 years behind the Gregorian calendar for those who can do the maths.

MIX July 2014

The upshot of using a lunar calendar is that like Easter, Ramadan changes dates each year. However while Easter is normally confined to March or April, Ramadan slides its way gracefully through the whole year over time. There are places on the internet where you can check the dates for Ramadan, but they will always be flagged as approximate. This is not because people cannot read a calendar but because the start and end of the month rely on the sighting of the new moon. Obviously the moon can be seen at different times in different countries, so there can be variations in timings up to 24 hours. Once the new moon has been seen and Ramadan starts in earnest, the highlight of the day is Iftar or breakfast. As the sun sets the devout will perform Maghrib prayers and then take their first food of the day. Iftar is a very social event and consists of soups, meats, rice, stuffed vines and really any and all savoury treats. Many of the Egyptian restaurants and cafes will have a special Iftar set meal with plates and plates of delicious food. For anyone wanting to soak up the atmosphere of Iftar, the Old Market is the place to be. Just as the sun is setting and the Mosques are sounding the call to prayer, the streets will be nearly deserted. Once prayers are over the cafes and restaurants will be thronged with people enjoying their first meal of the day washed down with plenty of water, fruit juices and tea (chai). One thing that is not served MIX July 2014

with these meals is alcohol. Most Muslims do not drink at all, but during Ramadan it is forbidden for any Egyptian to buy or consume alcohol. These rules do not apply to tourists, but the smaller restaurants will not have any beer or wine. Visitors who would like to experience a traditional Iftar meal should put all thoughts of a cold Sakara out of their mind until they return to the hotel. Inside the hotel, life continues as normal with food and drink all day. Towards the end of the day, the service might seem a little slower and the smiles not quite so broad, but going without food and water for 15 hours is enough to strain even the happiest of hearts. Smokers will understand how hard it is to go a few hours on a flight without a cigarette so surviving the whole day without a smoke is positively heroic. Ramadan comes to a close at the end of July with a huge party; Eid al Fitr is the biggest feast of the year and everyone has fun. Presents are exchanged, the kids get sweets and the beautiful lanterns light up the streets and homes as everyone celebrates. The highly decorative lanterns originate from the Egyptian Fatmid Caliphate over 1000 years ago. Along with traditional lamp shapes, stars and crescents

make up the beautiful displays in homes, hotels, malls and mosques. The celebrations start after sunset prayers on the first day of Shawwal, the month of the 10th Islamic calendar and often last for many days. The feast is like Christmas, New Year and Birthdays all rolled into one and everyone takes the opportunity to take a break, visit relatives and of course eat. There are lots of traditional sweet treats, cakes and nuts laced with enough honey and sugar to make a diabetic quiver at the mere thought. These delicious snacks can be found in shops and supermarkets and make great gifts for anyone with a sweet-tooth. Ramadan Kareem

Sharm Action for Animals Let’s make a difference

RAY OF HOPE

FOR THE INNOCENTS Make a difference

By Hedvig Jeney

In the dark alleys of the backyards in Sharm, where the shadows are hiding the garbage bins, between the smelly leftovers and trash, there is a life we might know about, but so often close the eyes in ignorance. Although for those who live there it is a question of life and death. They’re the homeless animals, who live in colonies somewhere in your neighborhood behind the scenes of your everyday life.. Cats and dogs strived by instincts live a miserable life and reproduce, right in front of us, spawning and multiplying out of control. It’s easier to defy nature and blame it on them, as it would be their fault, but actually we, humans, are responsible for this misery.

and delivered to the Pets Hotel. The vets operate there and the animals stay for the appropriate post op recovery time before being returned to the spot they were collected from. Considering just one unsterilized female cat and her offspring can be responsible for over 10,000 kittens in just four years, we think this program is pretty important to the health and safety of Sharm’s animal population. Same for the wandering homeless dogs in packs.

Sally Spenceley and Alina Sarycheva, told me all about the organization. The founder of this charity based group is Maggie Benson, with Diane Clemont, Sara Wassef and some others have established this organization in 2011, because they realized, that the situation of the stray animals In the month of July, they was getting worse and worse. have made an agreement with Dr. Albert Gabra, a well The official solution is the so known veterinarian to start called “ the quick fix”, meaning neutering on stray animals, the simple poisoning of the heal then release them. They are working through raising funds, collecting animal food or even veterinarian help. Many pets have found new homes by adoption through SAFA during the past years. Besides adoption, the organization’s main program, due to the rising number of the stray animals in the backyards, is the so called TNR ( Trap, Neuter, Release ). We can buy their special rubber armband for 25 EGP in numerous pet shops and public places in Sharm, such as Miro Pet shop, Maze Pet shop, Shark’s Bay Pet shop, the Lounge Bar and many more. If you wish to help this way, you’ll find the places. Neutering is a long term solution, but if we seek immediate help, adoption and fund raising is where we can start to take part of the work of this organization. Not only money is needed, but also animal loving people, who can volunteer to be with the cats and dogs and make their lives more comfortable. SAFA has taken over the animal shelter in the Rowaysat area of Sharm, they need all kinds of volunteer work to keep up the place in human conditions. They welcome anybody, who would like to give a precious moment to an abandoned cat or dog simply by giving them company and love. It starts always with just an excursion to see how they are in the shelter without any commitment, just spreading some love to the dogs and cats playing.
