The atmosphere each year is fun and friendly with many of the ‘contestants’ dressed in fancy dress or wearing the charities famed colour ‘pink’. The after party was held at the Hard Rock Café in Nabq where everybody enjoyed an all inclusive buffet and soft drinks and won amazing prizes from the charity auction. 4

Each year many Sharmers make the journey to be part of this special event, where Bedouins mix with Coptic Monks in a special union regardless of cultures and different religions.

TNR Program The Sharm Action for Animals group had a successful ‘Trap, Neuter and Release’ program where International & Egyptian vets from Cairo and Ukraine neutered many stray and wild dogs and cats from the Nabq area. The program is designed to responsibly reduce the population of feral animals in a safe and kind way, educating people that other methods are not humane or neither efficient. Many caring community members volunteered to help and comfort the animals after the procedures. preference of sauces and how you would like your meat, then sit back and enjoy the live cooking show. What these guys pull out of their holsters and juggle in the air with utmost ease are extremely sharp kitchen knives – and eggs! The fact that their equipment is flying all over the place with only a hot iron table between the both of you might not sound like a happy place to be, but the thrill is absolutely worth it. 7

@ Ghibli Raceway By Moira Tune Any motor racing enthusiast will still be revelling in the afterglow of the F1 finale show-down. No matter where your allegiance lies, it was a thrilling ride right to the very end. So to keep the adrenaline flowing we popped up to Sharm’s very own raceway to interview Ghibli’s recently acquired racing star Maxi Czyszek.

into the summer camp called ‘moto camp’ in her native country of Poland. She tried karting and “didn’t really like it” but the following year she thought she would give it another try. This is when she was encouraged to enter the professional competition and found herself on the podium for 1st place. After this she decided to make karting her career and Maxi joined the Ghibli team in July 2013 as a got her Professional Karting Licence from C.I.K professional coach for the new karting school for (Commission Internationale de Karting) and the kids and to give private lessons for beginnings F.I.A (Federation InternationaleAutomabile). upto a professional level. Maxi explains that at Ghibli they have 6.5 horsepower karts for novice/normal drivers and 9.0hp karts for experienced expert drivers. As a professional driver she drives a kart of 28hp which can reach up to speeds of 120 kph. A karting team consists of the driver and a professional mechanic team which all adds to the expense. One championship racing weekend can add up to over 5,000 euro – so sponsorship is necessary. Indoor karting is different as everyone drives the same kart and there are no team mechanics to ‘tweak’ the karts, putting the emphasis on the driver rather than the kart. She has also raced in the DD2 category which is 32hp with two gears. It’s a different style of driving and feels faster. Obviously Maxi loves the adrenalin rush of her sport, but there is a lot more to it than just sitting in the kart and driving around the track. She is a slim and fit woman, but one month before a race she starts intense training. There is nothing specific but she swims and cycles and completes gym exercises to strengthen her arms and neck muscles. She has also had her fair share of injuries, broken or fractured ribs being the most common complaint. When I asked her about how she mentally prepares or what is the personality of a racing driver she says she is a quiet person, but very competitive and completely concentrated on racing. She never gives up, even if she is at the back of the pack and will always keep pushing until the end. This is a determined young lady with MIX December 2014

a passion to drive and achieve. When talking about her future; Maxi hopes to compete in the Egyptian Championships. She enjoys her work with Ghibli as a coach and is keen to encourage new and young drivers. It has been a fairly quiet year but she assures me that 2015 will be a fun and exciting year to watch. Ghibli are planning to host the “Egyptian National Rotax Max Challenge” and the “Ghibli Speed Challenge”. She is also excited to watch her friend Max Versteppen become the youngest ever F1 driver at 17 competing in the Red Bull Junior team.

Maxi is a joy to talk to; she is articulate and savvy. She knows her racing and says she is very impressed with Ghibli’s standards “even in Europe not all of the raceways have racing overalls – here it is very impressive, everyone gets an overall, balaclava, and helmet”. She also says that Ghibli gives everyone a chance to really feel like a professional racing driver – so why not give it a whirl and go racing around the track, who knows you could be signing up for one of her private lessons and find yourself joining the Professional drivers rank. Ghibli have ‘Sunday super special’ deals for residents which includes a five minute warm-up and a 10 lap race at discounted prices, or you can race any day of the week between 11am – 10pm at regular rates.

Three Crowned Kings for Christmas By Moira Tune

F

eel like treating yourself to a perfectly cooked juicy steak? Well welcome to ‘Sharm el Steak’ the catch phrase of ‘The Three Crowns’, the place which has steadily built its reputation on providing consistently good quality steak among other things on their vast menu. We popped up to Nabq to check out their claim to fame and to also book our place at their equally famous Christmas dinner.

could keep an eye on the match but equally enjoy my companionshipJ. Where ever you sit, you have full service and the waiting staff are very attentive and friendly. We were asked if we were dining, given menus and served drinks all within five minutes of sitting down. The menu is extensive and has increased considerably since the early days of the Three Crowns opening. There are starters, combo platters, baguettes, jacket potatoes, omlettes, salads, burgers, chicken dishes, steak dishes, fish, pasta, and curry. So basically they have all bases covered. You can have a snack or go all out there and order Lobster Thermidor, Beef Wellington or their renowned Chateaubriand for two.

The Three Crowns is as its name implies a Brit pub serving up a mix of what Brit’s love most; good pub grub at good prices, sport on lots of large flat screen T.Vs and a nice pub atmosphere with friendly English speaking staff. It’s a formula which really works as the place was packed full when we arrived to catch the tail end of the footie match and of course We ordered a combo starter platter which allows you to pick ‘n’ mix from a choice of eight grab a bite to eat. items. We had the BBQ Chicken wings, Battered The place is large and spacious with lots of Mushrooms & Loaded Potato skins. We were options for seating arrangements. It’s casual also treated to a sample of their homemade and friendly, so you can choose to eat on the Chicken Liver Pate which is featuring on their high tables with high chairs, on the lounge Christmas Menu. Everything was tasty but for tables, in the restaurant area or even sitting at small appetites be warned you definitely get you the bar. We picked a spot where my partner value for money as the servings are big. 18

MIX December 2014

For the main course my partner choose the Beef fillet cooked medium with Roquefort sauce, side salad and chips. You can choose a variety of different sides and sauces. I choose the Surf ‘n’ Turf which was fillet steak cooked medium rare, salmon fillet and a king prawn served with steamed vegetables and chips. Both dishes were excellent, the steak cooked to our order, seasoned perfectly and very tasty – it’s just a shame that I could not finish mine. The popularity of the place speaks volumes, as every table was occupied with feasting friends; from big groups of boys watching footie, couples and tourist families all tucking into food. At least four tables near us ordered the Chateaubriand – so this is on the list for one of our next ventures up to Nabq, but first comes our Christmas Dinner booking. The Three Crowns have built up a great reputation for putting on a lavish Christmas Dinner Brit Style. It has become so popular that the bar staff have been taking bookings from mid November. The dinner is served from 2.30pm on 25th December and the celebrations continue all day long. It is not just about the MIX December 2014

fabulous food but also the fantastic festive atmosphere created by the décor, team, DJ etc. This year’s theme is Black and White and it is an occasion to dress up as Andy the owner insists it’s a time to celebrate and out of respect for all the huge effort put in to provide such a feast no shorts or swimwear is allowed. I mean back in Blighty you wouldn’t rock up to your Grandma’s in a pair of speedo’s so why would you here. The menu consists of no less than five courses. There is a choice of four starters with fish, meat, and vegetarian options, followed by a soup course (with two choices), followed by the main course where you can choose traditional Roast Turkey plus the trimmings, Beef Wellington, Grilled Salmon Fillet, or Roast Lamb Moroccan style. The desert course has a choice of four dishes including Christmas pudding and the finale is the Cheeseboard with different types of cheese and a variety of crackers. All of this for only 300le per person. Bookings are essential and monies must be paid in advance, so to avoid disappointment pop in to the Three Crowns and put your name down. 19

Christmas Lamb with an Exotic touch

20

MIX December 2014

Presented by Chef Rajendra Singh – Rangoli Indian Restaurant In some countries lamb is traditionally served at Christmas. We wanted to add an exotic flavor to all the delicious food for the feast, so we visited Chef Rajendra Singh from the Rangoli Indian Restaurant of Movenpick Resort in Sharm el Sheikh. He kindly gave us the royal recipe of his famous Lamb Chops Masala; a traditional North Indian dish with aromatic spices. He started his career 14 years ago in New Delhi and worked in the famous Oberoi and Kempinski Hotels in Mumbai for many years. Four years ago he moved to Sharm, to Movenpick, where we all can enjoy his delicious Indian food. He prepares the dishes always with care and from the highest quality of ingredients. “I prefer to speak directly to our guests by the table, in order to help them chose, so we can satisfy all that they dream for dinner. We have a great variety of food, mild, medium, spicy or even vegetarian.” – he said. The Lamb Chops Masala is a dish that comes from the Punjab region; it was invented for King Sher Shah Souri and became his very favorite dish. An easy to prepare, but exquisite dish for your Christmas menu everybody will enjoy. Ingredients

PREPARATION

Oil (as required ) Whole cumin – ½ tsp Garlic – 4-5 cloves Ginger – 5 gr. 1 green chili – fine chopped Lamb chops – 500 gr. Tomatoes – 4 pieces Onion – 2 pieces Fresh coriander – half bunch Water – 2 cups Salt – as preferred Coriander powder – ½ tsp Tumeric powder – ½ tsp Roasted and crushed cumin - ½ tsp Red chili powder – ½ tsp Garam masal – 1 tsp Pinch of kasoori methi (typical Indian spice)

Heat 4 tsp oil in a pan, add the whole cumin seeds, green chili, the fine chopped garlic and onion and fry it till it is golden colored. Add the turmeric, ginger and keep it on slow fire for 2-3 min. Then add the lamb chops, the finely chopped tomatoes, cook it for about 10 minutes, add all the remaining spices and pour 2 cups of water on top. Now cook it on a low heat until the lamb is tender and add 1 tablespoon of cream. Now it’s ready to be served, while it’s still steamy hot. Garnish with coriander leaves and fine sliced ginger and green pepper.

MIX December 2014

Christmas Joy in the City of Peace Christmas Customs and Traditions in Sharm el Sheikh By Hedvig Jeney

nowflakes are falling slowly in the soft silence of the cold winter nights; the freezing darkness holds the secrets of the beloved old man with a white beard and a red coat, flying on his sledge with reindeers and a great big bag full of gifts for all of us.

S

Well, in the desert this is more like a dream that our hearts have about Christmas, but the holidays will arrive to us here in Sharm el Sheikh. Maybe a little different, maybe a whole lot different, still we celebrate the feast of joy and love by every means and in all traditions. The atmosphere of Christmas in Sharm each year is very different from the rest of the world, we decorate palm trees, Santa arrives on a camel ‌ it seems we are in LaLa-Land. We are very lucky to be in a city where religions live peacefully together and we can celebrate each other’s feasts all around the year, regardless of ideologies, in the name of kindness, generosity and love. The traditions for celebrating Christmas are MIX December 2014

quiet different across the globe, and as Sharm is a multicultural environment, we have the freedom to mix celebrations and express the happiness of this feast. We even celebrate twice - once on the 25th of December and on the 7th of January when the orthodox (Coptic) Christians have Christmas we do it all over again. We have chosen three very different locations to paint a picture for our readers of how we celebrate Christmas in the desert. Christmas in Little Buddha Bar Although the parties never stop for the clubbers in this popular nightclub, their Christmas preparations started long before the feasts to welcome everyone for the perfect Christmas experience with plenty of surprises. They dress the club in an elegant Christmas atmosphere which we can enjoy all month. The moment we step into Little Buddha Bar, a tall, sparkling Christmas tree in red, gold and silver decoration greets the guests right beside a winter landscape all in white and blue.

25

LIVING The evergreen pine tree has traditionally been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years. Pagans used branches of it to decorate their homes during the winter solstice, as it made them think of the spring to come. Christians use it as a sign of everlasting life with God. Red represents the infamous apple from the Bible, gold is the color of the Sun and light - very important in the dark winter and both are the colors of fire, that you need to keep you warm. Blue stands for the sky and heaven and white is often associated with purity and peace. The soft candlelight illuminates the interior festive decoration giving a sophisticated flair for the Christmas atmosphere. The highlight of the month is naturally Christmas Eve; their team of chefs carefully thought of all the delicious details for an exquisite dinner for those who want to spend the evening with their loved ones in Little Buddha. All the delicacies are available on Christmas day, as well. On the menu as well as many other delicious dishes, one can choose from the Exotic Duck Salad or the Marinated King Prawn, the traditional Roasted Turkey, Fillet Mignon with creamy Sauce or even Parmiggiano crusted Norwegian Salmon. For dessert there is Christmas pudding of course and (for the curious) a Glazed Fruit Cup with sparkling Cream. They also provide a la carte menu and after dinner it’s party time as usual in the nightclub. Santa will come to the guests with little surprises and presents and all the while the resident DJ will serve you the soft tunes of Christmas. It is highly recommended to book your table for this special evening and Christmas daycall 01145500032 to make a reservation. The Big Switch On - SOHO Square Although all the city of Sharm is twinkling with lights for Christmas, there is one place which can hardly be compared to any other when it comes to the sparkling illuminations for the feast. SOHO Square has made it a tradition over the years 26

to transform the piazza into a magical wonderland. The Big Switch On to mark the start of the Christmas season happens on the 7th of December and during the holidays everybody can marvel at the magnificent glow of the Christmas lights. The event is always watched by thousands of people and there are numerous exciting programs which follow. The variety of the lights, colors and forms is immensely large, every inch of the square is decorated. Huge white snowballs, big silver baubles, light curtains, snowflakes and canopies give a bright ceiling to the square and there are beautiful Christmas ornaments created with light. There are over 250,000 individual bulbs which light up Soho Square’s Christmas, with over 2.5 kilometres of cabling. SOHO starts working on this special decoration for more than two months before the switch on. What started in history with simple candles, in our modern times has become a spectacular light show in December in Sharm.

The tradition of using candles as light on Christmas came early into the Christmas traditions. They were used even before by pagans during ancient winter solstice celebrations as a way of remembering that spring would soon come. One of the earliest records of candles being used at Christmas is from the middle ages, where a large candle was used to represent the star of Bethlehem. Jesus is sometimes called ‘the Light of the World’ by Christians. In modern days we replaced the candles with electric light and now the variety of forms and colors have grown into beautiful creations. On the Big Switch On event, as well as the wonderful lights, there are attractions to be seen. The Fiji Military Parade Band open the evening marching around the square, followed by fireworks while 24 snow machines turn the desert evening into a winter night. International superstars Bonnie Tyler and Tony Hadley are on stage giving an unforgettable show. MIX December 2014

On the 12th of December, they will partially repeat the show for the children, that will be the day of the Kid’s Switch on, where the program will be especially for the kids. All during the month of December we can go and enjoy the Christmas lights, the little house of Santa, the famous spicy and hot gluhwein, one can ice-skate and the really brave can meet the freezing winter in the Ice Bar. On Christmas Eve there will be a procession of the 3 Kings, as if they just stepped out of the Bible, under the bright Christmas lights of SOHO Square. Boxing Day takes place on December 26th and it was started in the UK about 800 years ago during the Middle Ages. It was the day when the collection boxes for the poor, often kept in churches, were traditionally opened so that the contents could be distributed to the people. Boxing Day has now become another public holiday, a traditional day, where often sports are played, especially horse racing and football matches. On Boxing Day the passionate can watch the traditional football match in the Queen Vic Pub with drinks and exquisite food. Then everyone can take a rest before the big party at New Year. Christmas in luxury – RIXOS Hotel & Resort People who want to spend the feast in pampered luxury are going to Sharm’s numerous hotels and resorts. One of the most impressive resorts in Sharm is the RIXOS in Nabq. They welcome the guests at the entrance with decorated gardens leading to the hotel and at the reception there is a 10m tall, richly decorated, red and golden Christmas tree. In the vast areas of the garden every little corner is lit by fairy lights, forming shapes and featuring the traditional ornaments of Christmas, such as snowmen, reindeers, bells and so much more. The sweet fragrance of cinnamon sneaks in the air MIX December 2014

around the pastry shop from the fresh Christmas cookies, while the hot mulled wine is inviting from the bar. Wandering around, you’ll find the gingerbread house of Santa, a little ‘Presepe’ with the story of the Holy Family, a magnificent ice sculpture of a reindeer; every corner is wonderfully adorned for the holiday. On Christmas day, Santa is found galloping on a camel to the beach to give little presents and surprises to the children and adults. Where else in the world can we meet the famous old man on the beach? The true story of Santa Claus begins with St. Nicholas, who was born during the third century in the village of Patara, in Greece. Through the centuries many stories help us to understand his extraordinary character and why he is so beloved and revered, as protector and helper of those in need. In many Western cultures it is said, that he brings gifts to the homes of the good children on 24th of December, the night before Christmas Day. He is dressed in a red coat with white fur and big black belt, wears a red hat rimmed with white fur, he has white beard and a kind, joyous face and he arrives on a sledge pulled by reindeers and carries a bag full of gifts for children. All the month the hotel has a magical atmosphere and when it comes to Christmas Eve, they prepare in the Zodiac Restaurant a rich and luxurious buffet, with traditional Christmas dishes. The restaurant is open also for the public, at affordable prices, if you want to spend the evening in an elegant restaurant, it is recommended to reserve a place for Christmas Eve by calling 01151133222.

NIGHT LIFE

Interview

with Sharm’s Rock Chick By Moira Tune

W

hether you are visiting Sharmer or a resident Sharmer, it’s highly likely that you have rocked out with Sharm’s most famous Rock Chick Joleene. This power gal with high octane energy is all about town. You can catch her testing out her tunes at Sharm’s underground jam sessions, find her wailing (I sincerely mean singing, but it doesn’t fit) at the Full Moon parties and more recently getting Krazy with Karaoke at the Chrystal Lounge in Soho Square. So with that kind of

28

time-table, plus helping the kids learn to sing, rehearsals with her guitarist Sherif and being a mother; it was a surprise I managed to get some of her precious time to find out what makes her tick. Joleene you have become quite a famous figure in Sharm el Sheikh, how did you first arrive here? And how long have you lived here? Thank you yes, it’s nice to be recognized for your passion and hard work. I arrived in Sharm 12 years ago, after

spending a few months in Luxor and Cairo, once I arrived in Sharm I knew I found my home. Did you start your singing career in Sharm? Or did you have a background in music before? No I started singing professionally when I was 17, in London; a big Drag Queen called “Bet Rinse” convinced me with 50 quid and free drinks to sing in a competition she was hosting...... and there the story started.

MIX December 2014

I have seen you perform many times and you always interact with the crowd – is this why you enjoy the karaoke at Chrystal Lounge? Do you have any problems getting people to sign up for songs? It’s not all about singing, for me the interaction with the crowd is very important and the most fun, the best gigs are when the audience are as crazy as me. I like chatting between songs, getting everyone up and involved; so yes I guess that›s why I love the karaoke night in Soho - I like making people happy. I know that you have helped a lot with the Sharm community in the Glee club project, plus many more – is this a passion of yours to encourage young singers and what is your inspiration for this? Yes this is a real passion for me to encourage and help push young talent. Children are pushed so much these days academically and have very little time left to follow creative dreams, so when I get the chance to see a child shine from within and express their emotions artistically for me it’s a high. Does music and singing run in the family? How old were you when you knew that you had a talent and enjoyed performing? No music doesn’t run in the family and I didn’t have this push so I discovered my talent by accident.... quite late, and kind of fell into it or like I said bribed into it. It only takes one person to believe in you at the right time to change your life, so that’s why coaching is important to me now. How would you describe your personality? Do you ever feel nervous getting up on stage or does it give you an adrenaline rush? MIX December 2014

29

NIGHT LIFE I have many personalities, it depends on the day LOLl, but I have to say the crazy side of me is the most dominant; I very rarely get nervous, I feel alive on stage. What has been you most special performance and where was it? I am lucky to say that I’ve performed at many special gigs and they have been the ones I have done for big charity events; singing for a cause and feeling like I have contributed to something bigger. With such a busy lifestyle how and where do you find time to relax? Now there’s a question! Relax what’s that? Tell me a little about your fellow musicians who you perform with – how important is the interaction?

30

So here is my future..... I am working with an amazing guitarist “Sherif Salim”. We came together by chance a year ago, he is a composer and producer and as I’m also a song writer; we are a complete working dynamite. We are now taking time to work on original stuff - you will all be hearing soon. Apart from my partnership with Sherif, the interaction with fellow musicians is also very important to me and in Sharm we have a nice community of musicians, we meet and jam regularly. You are known as a bit of a ‘Rock Chic’ – is this your favorite genre or do you like to perform other genres? I like it when you call me rock chick :) yes rock is in my soul, but depending on my mood I enjoy and sing many styles; jazz, blues, pop, house even country – let’s face it with the

name Joleene who cannot like county, but nothing makes me more happy to knock out a big ballad and shake a few windows! What’s your favorite set or song and what Artist inspires you? I don’t have a favorite set or song per-set as it changes all the time... but artists that have inspired me are Aretha Franklin, Eta James, Eva Cassady, Elvis, Mic Jagger, Bon Jovi - OMG my list is so diverse and can go ooooooon! And finally what are the plans for the future? My plans for the future are composing more original stuff with Sherif and touring - seeing more of the world, while doing what I enjoy the most SINGING!
